Jerry Hall, 58: ‘I smoke, I drink, I like wine, I love sun tanning, I drink coffee’

wenn21373010

I’ve always sort of liked Jerry Hall. She stayed with Mick Jagger the longest, she had most of his kids, and she seems like a good mom and a pretty cool person. Plus, she was a great model. Jerry still lives in London (I think she got the mansion in her divorce from Mick) and most of her friends and family are in London too. Jerry gave a new interview to Good Housekeeping (via The Daily Mail) about her life these days, her thoughts on Botox, hard living and her new scientist boyfriend. She sounds cool.

Her boyfriend, Professor Armand Leroi: He’s a New Zealand born geneticist, 50, based at London’s prestigious Imperial College, who specializes in the science of beauty and ageing and has presented science documentaries for Channel 4 and the BBC. Jerry says: ‘I don’t have a checklist – you meet someone and you get on. It is a miracle, I think, to meet someone you like. I have a boyfriend – Armand – who I have been seeing since just after New Year. He is lovely and very clever and very handsome. I am really, really happy. I am very lucky – I feel really blessed in life.’

Aging naturally: ‘Everything is water off a duck’s back. It is something that happens with age – I am not bothered about anything. What will happen will happen. I am very against [Botox]. I think it looks silly – people with mean-looking eyebrows!’

She smokes, drinks and tans: ‘I am 58. That is pretty old, for God’s sake. I look pretty good for my age, and I am enjoying that. But I smoke, I drink, I like wine, I love sun tanning, I drink coffee… I am doing all sorts of things I shouldn’t do.’

Her relationship with Mick these days: ‘Of course it is challenging, because we used to be married and you have a divorce and then there are children from different moms… I’m sure anyone would agree that is a challenge! But we all love each other, and I get on great with all the moms.’

[From The Daily Mail]

I’m including some pics of Jerry with her boyfriend below. He’s rather cute (for an older gentleman). They look nice together. As for Jerry’s opposition to Botox and her commitment to smoking, drinking, tanning and such… well, she’s a rock n’ roll ex-wife. She’s seen it all and done it all. Why not, you know? I’d rather spend time with someone fun like Jerry than some 50-something woman with a frozen face who only eats kale.

  1. Sugar says:

Her new guy is much better looking than Mick.

  2. Truthtful says:

She sounds a lot of fun and makes aging dare I say “less dramatic” and …even fun! She sounds so so cool and relaxed and enjoying her life to the fullest. Super great example and inspiration.

Love, having plenty of fun, being so cool and gorgeous on top of that: This is exactly how I want to be in 30 years! Wow isn’t she great!

    • Claudia says:

All of the above. So refreshing compared to most other “aging” celebrities.

    • jessica6 says:

She does sound like a lot of fun, and I for one would love to sit down with her over a few glasses of wine. Jerry has always struck as a woman who couldn’t give a damn what others think, and does her own thing, yet is still a decent and loyal mother and friend. She’s my kind of gal!

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I love what she said here. I hope I have that same outlook in 23 years.
She has a really healthy approach to aging.

    • Wren says:

I hope I look and sound as HAPPY as she does when I’m her age! Seriously, she seems cool as hell and not too bothered by getting old. Definitely someone who would be a blast to hang out with.

    • Shazz says:

me too truthful, except not 30 years, but 3…aughhh!

      • Truthtful says:

@shazz: ;)! well enjoy it to the fullest! There is no age for fun and being cool! rock on lady!

  3. MrsBPitt says:

    She seems cool…the anti-Nicole Kidman…

    • FLORC says:

Hall didn’t go through what scientology did to Kidman. That stress can drive someone mad. Because of tha I cut her a lot of breaks.
And Hall has had work done along with botox. She’s cool enough and was quirky in that VH1 dating Jerry Hall reality show, but she’s making for a good read and not being honest.

      • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Thank you for bringing that up – it is often forgotten and perhaps underestimated what she went through during that time.

      • FLORC says:

Even though Nicole was never a Scientologist they harrassed and stalked her endlessly to a high degree and likely still keep watch on her. If Botox is what she wants i’m not going to judge. And her fashion sense is still great.

      • mayamae says:

@FLORC – exactly. That doesn’t even include the alienation of her children. I think that’s the worst thing that CO$ did to her.

      • FLORC says:

        mayamae
That would drive me into some kind of depressing madness. To have your children turned against you like that. So that even if you ignored the threats to your safety and did see your kids they were so poisoned against you. Heartbreaking doesn’t begin to cover it!
She survived that and at this stage her kids (or atleast daughter) have reached out to her on their own. So, if Nicole likes to freeze her facial nerves into full submission god bless! There are worse paths she could have found.

  4. Londerland says:

A great attitude to have. She looks pretty damn good anyway.

    • Decloo says:

I think she looks WAY older than 58. I’m not dissing her because ‘to each his own’ but you can always tell when someone is a smoker.

      • Truthtful says:

I think she dress older but looks younger. But the fact I like the most about her is that she doesn’t care if smoking or drinking age her!! and that is quite youthful , refreshing and cool!
There is nothing that sounds cooler than a free and self- confident lady!

      • Ronia says:

Oh yeah, right. Most nearly 60-year old women on the street look way older than Hall! Please. Even the anti-smoking preaching mantra gets old already.

      • FLORC says:

        Decloo
She does look older than her age. I like the message, but it’s the attitude that makes her seem and feel young.

      • Suze says:

Maybe where you come from 58 year olds look younger than Jerry, but I think she looks her age, and good.

  5. PunkyMomma says:

Her views are refreshing. You go, girl!

  6. Eleonor says:

    She is cool.
I don’t know how she was capable to stay married to Mick that long!
Recently I’ve seen their daughter Georgia May and God she is stunning.

    • manta says:

Georgia May was the celeb child I was thinking about when reading posts about Kendall Jenner or Ireland Baldwin.

She’s the exemple of a person for whom nepotism probably helped opening doors, but she’s actually a good model and manages to keep her pie hole shut and spares us from the “Oh no the Jagger name didn’t do anything for me, neither the fact that my mother was a famous model” eye-rolling interview.
And in her case, I believe she actually puts the amount of work required. At least, I’ve never read anything negative from the industry.

      • Eleonor says:

I think she is smart enough to understand it’s better to shut up sometimes. As far as I know she does catwalks, got endorsements and stuff like that. Maybe she is not a super-model like her mum, but she works on her own.

    • FLORC says:

      Eleonor
Funny enough she was never legally married to Mick. They had a ceremony, but he fabricated some info, never followed through on a licensed. And something to do with the person officiating the wedding not being abe to do so. Long story short when it was time to divorce he wasn’t going to give her anything. Her lawyers argued their 17(?) year marriage in her eyes was true and that many years was enough to say it was legal. So, she got a lot!

And during that marriage time he was barely around her and she turned a willing blind eye to his many gfs and flings.

  7. Aussie girl says:

Love it! I just find her honesty refreshing .

  8. BeckyR says:

Have always like Jerry. So down to earth. Her attitude toward aging is refreshing. Some other celebrities could learn much from her philosophy. GO JERRY!

  9. Brin says:

Agree with all the above comments…Preach it!

  10. Calcifer says:

I really, really like Jerry Hall. Of course I don’t know what’s she ‘s really like in person, but from her pictures and interviews she’s seems a very sunny, funny and laid-back person. It makes me realize that is what counts. And then the wrinkles don’t matter as much, they can even seem attractive because they show character. Much better example than Nicole Kidman – who I do like as well, by the way, but I just wish she would relax. I do think Jerry is lucky in having a great mane of hair, it’s a great asset. On the downside, she dresses a bit too lady-like for my taste, she would look even better if she dressed younger and more casual.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Glad I’m not the only one wondering why she is dressing like Ann Romney. She can still dress lady-like, if that’s her style, but a little less frumpy.

    • Justme says:

Actually lady-like dressing suits older women (I’m Jerry’s age so I can talk). A bit of coverup is a good thing and makes you feel better. I sort of think middle-aged chicks who try to dress younger just look a bit pathetic. Your figure changes even if you work out, so why not wear what suits you?

And I’m with her on the coffee and wine!

      • Calcifer says:

@ Justme By dressing younger I don’t necessarily mean showing a lot of skin. I once read somewhere that wearing a T-shirt can take ten years off your face, and I personally think that’s true. It’s more relaxed and that can make you look fresher. It’s only true if the T-shirt is of good quality and fits well of course, because a baggy discolored one will add twenty years to your face 🙂 The most important thing is feeling happy in your own skin though, and Jerry seems a perfect example of that, T-shirt or not…

  11. Amy says:

She’d be a great lunch date, I bet. She’s from Texas and was, I think, engaged to Bryan Ferry when she met Mick and they got together. She drew the line at Mick’s making a baby with Luciana Morad, and when she filed the divorce papers he countered by saying they’d never really been married b/c the wedding had taken place in some island country and there hadn’t been a license. The People article then went on to talk about an alleged settlement (quite healthy) and it occurred to me that maybe if *I*, who had also never been married to Mick, filed for divorce and asked for a much smaller settlement (which would still have been several times what I earned at the time), maybe Jerry & I could do a class action divorce. (I was too busy to pursue it, but it made me smile for a week or two….)

    • Eleonor says:

Mick was an epic a-hole, but she knows, now. I’ve read an interview a while ago where she stated she has stayed in that marriage for too long, and that she would never let her daughters marry a man like him.
      She is an interesting woman.

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She’s my age! I turned 58 yesterday. Yikes. I don’t think anyone should smoke, and I don’t suntan, just because it bores me after 10 minutes, but otherwise, I’m on board with her philosophy, and so are my good friends. You can spend the last decades of your life punishing yourself for getting older, or you can exercise and eat healthy but enjoy your wine and laugh a lot and tell the people who make your life full and happy how much they mean to you. And step away from my coffee or draw back a nub where there was a hand. This is the next chapter, folks, let’s make it the best one yet. Go, Jerry.

I agree, most of us are too busy being scared/worried about aging. I red something on a card that went like: ‘We don’t stop playing because we get older, we get older because we stop playing.’ I think that’s pretty much her motto: enjoy every day to the fullest, don’t discuss life- live it! And IF looking back, then only to learn, not to regret. I wouldn’t advertise for smoking, drinking, or tanning, and I DO like kale :-), but moderation really IS a key. Jerry seems to have a ‘good capacity for happiness’, so I’m happy for her, and I wish you all the same.

I adore Jerry, she’s very well-liked in the UK. She’s always spot on in her attitude, imo, gracious, or hilarious or whatever it may be. She’s great re Mick, they are solid friends, and their kids are amazingly grounded.
She’s not advocating smoking of course, but it really is soooo refreshing to get a break from the Toxin Terror every now and then, no?
I also agree 100% that ageing brings many benefits, one of which is freedom from anxiety re not being ten times better looking than we are….we have accepted ourselves and have fun with that, rather than aching to be otherwise.
She’s even more fab with shorter hair….I remember her at about 16 in Cosmo, with those tumbling locks she used to condition with mayonnaise.

    • Chris says:

I think she mentions it in the same breath as wine and cigs simply because the Clean Living vogue advocates elimination of all toxins, and caffeine is classed as such.
More pertinent though is the general fear of ingesting anything that might contribute to a tiny wrinkle, or other deterioration, and that’s what she’s distancing herself from. Me too!

  19. Rhiley says:

I am not sure her boyfriend is old enough to refer to as an “older gentleman.” I just think he looks a little older for his age. Kevin Bacon is 56, and I think most of us would call him a “a hot piece.” John Stamos is 50 and he is another hot piece, not older gentleman.

    • prayforthewild says:

    • Chris says:

I must interject that really noticeable weight gain at this age is not inevitable, though it’s true that we may need to accept a few extra pounds if unwilling to spend time in a gym.. Jerry is part thoroughbred race-horse anyway, in terms of a rangy and slender silhouette, but she has certainly permitted a little cushioning to occur, so I’d say she’s pretty relaxed about this too, just aware of what’s the easiest way to look good without undue denial or exertion!

    • islandwalker says:

Some women, myself included, lose weight after menopause. I had trouble keeping any weight on. Now my system has balanced out. She is blessed by being tall and slender naturally. She looks happy and healthy.

  21. Jayna says:

I kind of follow her, what she’s up to in her interviews over in the U.K. mostly, and I love her. She stayed in the U.K. initially because after the divorce she still had younger kids and they were British and wanted to finish raising them and for them to be close with their father when he was around and wasn’t touring but said she missed America also. I think she has a great energy about her and passion for life still but never pretentious.

She has done a lot of theatre over there like The Vagina Monalogues, The Graduate. Doing theatre work over in Sydney is where she met some billionaire her age that she dated long distance for several years and he had his businesses and children over there, but long distance seemed t work out for a couple of years but then it ended. He couldn’t move to England and she couldn’t move to Sydney. Her life was still in the U.K. with one young child left in the house. He wasn’t a rock ‘n roll type at all, so Jerri left those types behind it seems after her divorce. Now she met this new man this year in January and seems smitten because she kept it lower profile at first. So they must be serious by now.

She has really stayed vital and doing interesting little things. She seems to have had a good relationship with Mick and says he’s still fascinating to her and he’s family but doesn’t miss the drama.

She still loves Texas and goes back a lot. She said her children love Texas also. I think her mother was ill and Jerri spent a lot of time in Texas traveling back and forth to be with her mom a few years ago, and Jerri is close to all of her sisters. So still loves to come back to Texas. She never lost her southerness while living in England.

Jerri has a high IQ and skipped a year in high school, was an A student. Here’s a great, interesting read about her in an interview she did last year. It’s amazing how naive they all were when she went off on her own at 16 to model after turning to modeling when she was 13 at the suggestion of her mother because she was crying because she was bullied at school being made fun of because she was so tall and gangly.

      • Jayna says:

Here’s another interview you might like. Keith Richard’s wife, ex-model Patti Hansen, 58, is another one that has aged gracefully and still beautiful in a very casual way and still hip. She is more a jeans and T-shirt type than Jerri, tough, and can still rock some cute leather pants

It shocked me that she, a high-flying model, who had a drug problem with Keith at one time, wanted to settle back down near her family. She just loved being a mom and making a home and is so unpretentious. She’s very family oriented. She suffered a breast cancer scare and then got bad news, she had bladder cancer which she talked about in this interview and how it rocked her family. It was a scary time for them.

They made her up rocker style for the interview photo, but all of her usual photos show a really natural-looking but still pretty woman at 58, dressed in casual looks, that looks younger than her age, more like late 40s, but still mature, not some plastic surgery face that doesn’t move trying to look 20.

Thanks for that….Patti Hansen’s another lovely woman, as you say. (I love her all the more because she’s kept my adored Keith happy! They, like Mick and Jerry, have terrific kids, so well-grounded)

      • Jayna says:

@Chris, I really enjoyed Patti’s interview. It was so in-depth and you really felt like you got to know her and her family at this stage of her life. The parts about her cancer were so honest. Men can be weak and terribly frightened when their wives get cancer. My father was the same way about my mom, and was there for her in so many ways but in many ways withdrawn, so afraid of losing her. Keith was terrified and shut down as his daughter said in another interview. Patti was the rock of the family. Cancer puts a terrifying strain on the family when it is diagnosed like hers was at Stage II muscle invasive bladder cancer with a fifty/fifty chance of living.

I felt there was so much honesty in her interview and she came across so down-to-earth even though they are beyond wealthy. It’s amazing their marriage really lasted with him in rock ‘n roll and how long it took for him to kick all of his drug issues, but he does love her and she him. I agree with her, that it came down to they were both from blue collar families, and no matter the fame they both gained and fast-living lifestyle when younger, that those sensibilities were still there for them when it came time to put down roots as far as being a family with their children.

The thing in the article I found odd, and someone responded to the article the same way, smoking is a leading cause of bladder cancer. Her sisters died, one from esophageal cancer and one from lung cancer, which leads me to believe they were heavy smokers. I wondered at the time if Patti was a smoker and just didn’t want to talk about it because she still smoked. But then later on in another interview I read where she was discussing bladder cancer and that women aren’t screened enough for it because it’s considered a male cancer, she did bring up smoking being the major causes for bladder cancer, and she said she did smoke but quit 25 years ago.

      • Eleonor says:

I didn’t mean bullied. I don’t think she ever said she was bullied in high school Wrong word. In another interview she talked about being sensitive about being so tall when so young. She had a rough childhood because her father, a war hero, came home changed, and they lived in fear of him.

Come on over here and have a seat, we’ll get along just fine! 🙂

I like her attitude, except for the smoking bit. Who wants to be around someone who is so hysterically opposed to aging that they spend all their time trying to stop time? What is the point to being permanently 23? It doesn’t work.

  26. Kcarp says:

Love it when people own their vices. I sometimes think as people get older if they quit drinking or smoking after a lifetime is when disease sets in. My husband granny is 90 and she lives on a diet of Reese’s and random processed foods.

I agree in a strange way. My grandmother has smoked since she was 12 and she’s nearly 90 now. My aunt spent years trying to get her to quit until my dad finally pointed out that quitting at her age would be what killed her, not the smoking! My aunt now buys her the odd carton lol.

Right on, Jerry Hall. Right on. 🙂

I like that, “I get along with all the other moms”….she sounds like a hoot.

  29. Pandy says:

While I’m still only 52, I’m not far behind her. Just wanted to say that I botox, drink and smoke herb and love to sunbathe. I also eat kale and other healthy foods. The botox and kale foods ensure I counter balance my vices lol.

Smoking and sun tanning..maybe she should spend some time in a hospital room with a lung cancer or skin cancer patient..is she crazy ? And this is cool ?

    • Ange says:

People are embracing her attitude to ageing and rejection of the hollywood norm, not celebrating that she smokes or tans.

  31. Mischa Jane says:

Love that she’s honest and doesn’t give a crap. We all have vices, I don’t trust anyone who claims they don’t have any.
