Michael Fassbender sang with his ‘Frank’ band for Colbert: adorable or not good?

I love some Michael Fassbender in the morning. These are some new Fassy photos – he’s still in NYC, and he was photographed yesterday in this leathery ensemble, carrying a garment bag/dry cleaner’s bag. As for the dark-haired lady… I’m thinking assistant? Publicist? Something like that. It doesn’t look like a romantic outing, it looks like friendship or business.

Michael is in town to promote his little Irish film, Frank, where he plays a would-be rock star who wears a giant plastic head. You don’t see Michael’s face at all in the film, but you do hear his voice – and his singing voice throughout. Michael, Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and the rest of the actors all played their own instruments and jammed throughout filming. In one rare piece of press for the film, Michael told Celebuzz that: “We had a lot of fun whenever we were playing the music. We always kind of got reprimanded for going into what we called the ‘funk tunnel,’ where we sort of went on Michael McDonald tangents. So that was fun.”

Michael and the band also appeared on The Colbert Report this week. First, here’s there performance. I have to say… Michael really is NOT a singer. He’s not flat-out terrible but he’s not good either.

Thankfully, Michael took off the head and did a regular interview with Colbert. Michael looks really good here.

I really want to see this movie.

  2. Abbott says:

I couldn’t read anything past ‘funk tunnel.’

  3. Renee28 says:

I’m pretty sure that’s Carla Azar. She’s a drummer and in the movie.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

Yes, this is Carla Azar. She stars in this movie as one of Frank’s band mates but in real life she is an amazing drummer in Jack White’s all female band from his Blunderbuss tour (and she will probably play with him on this tour when the movie promotion ends). Jack was her guest at the NY premiere of “Frank”. I hoped Kaiser would add his pictures to the previous “Who would you rather?” post.

    • Poe says:

Yeah, you can see her in the “band” pic in the background. She’s blurry, but I’m pretty sure it’s her.

  4. Lara says:

Is it wrong that I want to with him wearing the head?

  5. TheOriginalKitten says:

    We’re calling him “Michael” now?

I wish I could watch the video.

He makes leather jackets look so sexy and he looks great in the stills…

I’m very curious about this movie. It intrigues me.

  6. Mia4S says:

@Kaiser I’m pretty sure the woman is Carla Azar, she’s one of his co-stars in Frank. She’s also a musician.

I thought Colbert was great. Very light-hearted and Fassy looked GOOD!!!

  7. Lou says:

    1. The woman is Carla Azar, who plays the drummer in “Frank” and is a professional drummer IRL (she plays with Jack White’s band).

    2. Fassbender can sing (there is plenty of video out there of him doing just that, and quite well), but it didn’t come off well on Colbert (I don’t think the register he was in, the head or the acoustics helped).

    3. He looks damn fine.

  8. Jsilly4 says:

Yeah I have no clue who she is but if you look at the video still she is playing the drums.

  9. mia girl says:

My husband and I weren’t surprised how charming Fassbender was on the show, what we were surprised about was how much we liked the band’s performance. It was good.

  10. jammypants says:

He sounded good in the studio recording. But yes, he doesn’t sound as good live.

I love his adorable outfit though.

  11. Norman Bates' Mother says:

Domhnall Gleeson looks really nice in this video. Michael’s/Frank’s singing outfit – with the odd combination of velvet, different types of dots and skinny scarf, still somehow makes much more sense than most things he wears to the premieres. I excluded the bowtie because bowties are cool, therefore always make sense.

  12. db says:

The woman in the pic looks like the drummer

  13. Rhiley says:

As a musical act, I didn’t get it. It wasn’t my thing. But it kind of made me love Maggie Gyllenhaal more. She just seems like a really cool, laid back woman, but also very smart and proactive. More Maggie, please.

  14. Lucretia says:

I thought Gyllenhall looked great–she was really into character as a rocker; Gleeson was good too. I also thought the sound was somehow not properly done–the recorded version in the movie is good (I’ve only heard it, not seen it). But it was fun to watch.

So excited for my Fassy. Fassy was actually in a band before he became an actor and considered it a possibility of a career, but things didn’t pan out as he had planned. He always wanted to be apart of a rock and, and he was, but he wasn’t the lead singer. I think he played the drums? I love me some Fassy and can’t wait to see him in the movie. And yes, I would like him to bang me once with the head on, and the other with the head off. 2 Heads for the price of one. 🙂

  16. SugarMalone says:

Loved this movie – funny and absolutely heart-wrenching. So glad it’s finally getting a proper North American release!

Also, correction (and SPOILER, although it’s really not) – you do get to see Fassy’s face at the end of the movie. He takes the head off for a couple scenes.

  17. Blue says:

He may not have the best voice, but he’s got everything else going for him. Beauty, charm, intelligence and sex appeal. You couldn’t ask for much more. It’s a crime you never see his gorgeous face in this film, which probably isn’t going to do much for his career. However, I’m sure we can expect bigger and better things from Fassy in the future.
