Robert Pattinson throws up & punches himself in the face before auditions

Robert Pattinson gave another good interview in support of The Rover. Rob spoke to The Guardian and while this isn’t one of his funniest or most enjoyable pieces ever, I still liked it. I guess Rob is probably grateful that he’s in a place where he can promote work he’s genuinely proud of, and there does seem to be a difference between his promotional work in the past year and his work during the Twilight years. You can read the full piece here and here are some highlights:

He had to audition for The Rover: “I’m quite good at doing meetings. If I’m just meeting someone about a job I’m like a dog, especially if my agent’s said to me: ‘A lot of people want this job.’ Then I’m like: ‘Oh yeah? Then I will do anything to get it!’” What’s his technique? “I don’t know, I just become a bulls–t artist! That’s when I start acting! I’m really much better at doing it when the cameras aren’t rolling …”

His pre-audition process: “I just can’t … I literally can’t do it. It’s just me looking uncomfortable, trying to put on an American accent … or sitting in the corner, making myself throw up and punching myself in the face.”

But he does enjoy acting in general: “For whatever reason, I think there’s something profoundly satisfying about being able to watch something you’ve done afterwards, or to just do a scene and feel like: ‘Oh, I just had an out-of-body experience for a second!’ Just for one second. And generally people don’t even notice. It feels literally like you’ve been asleep for a second.”

The Twilight films were the hardest work he’s ever done: “I think Twilight’s probably the hardest part I’ve done, because to do it for five movies, it’s really hard to think of stuff that’s maybe not boring. Especially if you don’t die. Because what’s the drama? You’re not scared of anything! And that’s the whole essence of drama: life and death.”

He tries to write: “I was trying to write a play the other day and I showed it to my assistant and didn’t quite realise how bad it was. I was writing it totally by myself in the middle of the night thinking: ‘This is how you do it! You just stay up all night and keep writing!’ She came in the next morning, and I’d been up all night writing. I said to her: ‘You have to read this! It’s amazing!’” He could tell it was perhaps not, he says, from her facial expressions as she read. “And then she said: ‘It’s not in English … and half the time you haven’t even put the character names in so it’s just a stream of consciousness …’”

He wants to do theater: “Something in a really small theatre. I don’t think I could do something on Broadway … But I’d quite like to do something kind of shocking.”

[From The Guardian]

He wrote a stream-of-consciousness play that wasn’t even in English? Sounds Cracken-esque. Maybe those extracurricular-partying rumors are true? I don’t know. I think Rob parties too much, for sure, but people have always said that about him and he still manages to get work and show up for all of his stuff. I remember during the Twilight years, everyone always talked about how much he drank during his off-hours, but he was never late for work, never begged off an interview, nothing. I guess that might be the definition of “functioning alcoholic” though. Maybe. But for sure, he’s a bulls—t artist. And a charming one at that.

It reminds me of writing papers in college. I quickly learned to not pull all-nighters. After about 2 am I thought I was being brilliant, but when I reread it in the morning it always sounded like I was drunk.

  2. Abbott says:

I need to read this play.

Gotta say, I’m worried about the guy, hanging around with Efron – not a good choice considering what that boy is up to these days. I think Rob doesn’t look that great in a lot of these pictures, his face is sweaty, he has bags under his eyes. I’m hoping he keeps his sanity in that LA cesspool. I wish he would go back to England.

  4. QQ says:

Well…if he does it then we dont have to!

  5. don't kill me i'm french says:

I confirm that at Cannes fest this year, everyone remembers he parties hard but apparently he’s a nice drunk even if he vomited in the main hall of his hotel

  6. Corrie says:

He looked fine. Too long of promo outings bit nothing major. He doesn’t seem to be doing anything different than he was before. I’d be worried if he was partying with Zac before rehab. But not now. If no one knew Zac went to rehab, you wouldn’t make the same comment. Zac actually didn’t even have to tell anyone. It’s just Lainey trying to push her version of gossip, she’s got a thing up her tale for him. Kinda sad. Lol.

Also, I think the “horror, horror, he drinks too much!” thing is a very American take on it. For a lot of Americans (and not all, before you set the dogs on me!) “functioning alcoholic” is what we Europeans call “someone with a social life”!

RPattz likes a beer but he’s young and still manages to hold his job down – nothing to see here.

      • Louminary says:

        this!!
Im Irish but live in Canada now. In Ireland I was always being pressured to drink more, and not let go home from the pub when I wanted! (And this is by my corporate finance friends, not wasters, not people who call in hungover)
Yet in Canada I would now be considered a heavy drinker!

    • Christina says:

If I remember Efron’s rehab stint happened before the broken jaw and getting beat up in a bad area of the city. He’s not an angel by any means.

      • mimi says:

        @Christina
Yeah, you’re right Christina, Zac’s broken jaw and fishy story about getting beat up late at night in a bad part of town known for drug deals happened after his stint in rehab. I was surprised he didn’t head back to rehab again. And he was recently seen partying with Michele Rodriguez (another drug and alcohol abuser) on that shady Middle Eastern movie producer’s yacht who is also bffs with Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton (yuck!). Zac, Michele, Lindsay and Paris have all had very public run ins with the law involving drugs and/or alcohol at one time or another. Not the type of crowd you’d want to be associated with if you’re serious about your acting career.

I don’t think Rob has an alcohol or drug problem. Sure he likes to go out with his friends and have a few drinks now and again but alot of guys his age are doing the same thing. I have never heard anyone complain about Rob being unprofessional or unprepared on the set of his movies or during promo due to alcohol or illegal drug use. He’s never had a run in with the law and he’s never been seen staggering out of bars drunk or high on drugs. I think he really cares about his image and I respect him for that.

  7. PunkyMomma says:

When Rob punches himself in the face, I wonder if he sees ✨sparkles✨?

  8. Melymori says:

In the last 2 Rob articles at Lainey she’s kind of implying that Rob might be using drugs or maybe I’m reading too much but she keeps comparing him to Zack Efron and judging by his last pics I’d say he’s doing more than just the booze. What a shame if that’s true.

    • Zee says:

He strikes me as more of a Leo
DiCaprio/Gerard Butler type (drinks too hard and parties and so his looks suffer) than a Zac Efron style coke head even if he does run around with Zac. He looks way better in these photos, even if a little rough, than he has lately and I read that he’s supposedly filming soon so he probably cuts down on the indulging when it’s time to work. That said he seems like the type that would do away better in London or NYC and out of L.A.

      • Melymori says:

I really hope that it’s a summer of booze the one to blame for his bloated looks lately or maybe he won’t age well, anything but drugs.

      • Anname says:

I agree Melymori, he seems to be enjoying a boozy summer. Re Lainey. she loves the chance to throw accusations at Rob, and never has anything positive to say about him. I take her shady comments with a grain of salt.
I would disagree with the bloated thing though. He seems tired and disheveled, not bloated, and with clear eyes. He had some sort of flu thing at part of the early promo too, which accounts for some of the bad photos.

He seems to be pretty self-aware guy who doesn’t lie to himself – gives me hope he will keep it under control and not go the Efron route. I like him, hope for the best.

  9. Zee says:

Meh. I can appreciate the self deprecation, but then I remember how much he shit on Twilight and I wonder if it’s a bit if a schtick…especially as he’s so hyperbolic. He was decent in The Rover and he’s improved quite a bit. I do think though that he needs to try and do a few more mainstream films, even if they are mainstream indies and not super arty indies, if he doesn’t want his career to fade.

    • Anname says:

It will be interesting to see if he eventually pursues any mainstream stuff. I am sure he knows the effect that only doing indies will have on his career, but It may be worth it to him right now, (having the freedom to make the kind of movies he likes). Sounds like it is, based on his current interviews. .

  10. Greata says:

Another overrated individual. D’ont care how charming he is….he cannot act.

  11. Kiddo says:

I think he should save that FOR the audition.

  12. Diana B says:

My God with the over-reaching. Functioning alcoholic? Really? Reaaaaaally?

  13. Tig says:

I think anyone who takes his interview quotes as 100% serious 100% of the time is way overthinking things. He has looked perfectly fine( or better!) in the pics posted here and other sites. He’s 28- he’s going to get his drink on from time to time. Poor Zac E- now no one can evidently come within breathing distance of him without being labeled a drug addict.

    • mimi says:

I don’t feel sorry for Zac. He’s an adult who has been to rehab twice now for drug and alcohol abuse. His recent mysterious broken jaw and shady incident that left him beaten up in a bad part of town known for drug deals leads me to believe he is still having drug and/or alcohol abuse issues. He’s been to rehab twice already so this is not unchartered territory for him.

  14. Miss Bennett says:

I think he looks good here, if a bit tired.
He seems to have a big appetite for anything that makes him feel good, food, booze, etc. Hopefully he’ll learn to dial it back before he burns out. It would be sad if anything bad happened to him. He’s got real talent, a great sense of humor and he’s so pretty to look at.

  15. meh says:

This interview makes him sounds like a navel gazing dbag who knows next to nothing about the creative process.

  16. Vl says:

Well he looks like he’s been punched in the face a lot.

  17. Mrs. Darcy says:

His face is like some mystical hot/not hot prism to me depending on what angle it’s shot from. I think it’s why I find him more attractive on film than in photos. He does need to watch the partying though as like Leo he’s prone to face puff. A young Brit puking in a hotel is just standard operating behavior for the U.K., I think the rare-ified Hiddleston and Cumberbatch Brit boys are making some forget what most Brit guys are like. It’s not all E.M. Forster/Downton Abbey up in here ;-). They drink WAY more than Americans. He’s not the greatest actor in the world but he’s improving and trying to do interesting work. I’ve seen a couple of things aside from Twilight that he’s been decent in- just watched Water For Elephants for the first time and his chemistry with the elephant was much better than with Reese I must say!
