I saw the previews for The Giver when I went to Guardians, and just seeing how much they aged up the main characters was enough to talk me out of going to see it. It’s a great book, but I don’t think it was ever the right material for the sexy teen thriller they apparently wanted to make it into.
In happier news, John Oliver is awesome, and his show has pretty much replaced The Daily Show in my viewing rotation. There’s less of it, but there’s so much less filler, and he does a great job of talking about complicated issues in clear, funny ways.
Everything you’ve said here …from The Giver preview to John Oliver are MTE!! I’m sure I’ll watch the Giver on cable someday, but no one in the theater needs to hear me grumbling about how such a great book deserves a more faithful movie.
Right there with you both. I have loved this book for years, I own it, it was the first time I heard my sons name (although he is not named after the character). So so disappointed in what they did with it. I had no desire to see it from the first trailer.

Funny thing with Taylor Swift: I generally think *everyone* looks better with red lips….Angelina included. But not Taylor S….it adds 15 yrs to her, imo…..though I don’t see that on anyone else at all.
Did the Giver actually bomb? No. It didn’t do as well as Weinstein and co. and probably hoped, but it’s not a bomb. The Expendables 3? Now that might be a bomb.
It cost $25-30 million and films need to take in roughly double their production cost to be profitable, so it seems like it may end up losing money, especially since it doesn’t seem like a film that will do extraordinarily well in foreign markets.
That being said, Expendables 3 was a much, much bigger bomb.
12 Million open at number 5 is pretty much a bomb. Low budget so will might make it but still no one is going to see this movie so it’s pretty much a bomb
I think because no one said it bombed outright sets your ocmment a bit out of line. “Sort of” really changes a lot of the meaning.
Considering how Weinstein expected this movie to it did not do well and projection percentage wise it’s sort of a bomb thus far.
Really, it didn’t have much of a chance against TMNT. I think without that and GotG people would have seen a movie like The Giver.
People want to laugh and see action in the summer!

I thought that it looked like a piece of crap. And I’ve seen the trailer a bunch of times on tv and I still don’t get what it’s about, other than it kind of reminded me of Equilibrium (in that they don’t have a choice, and they have injections).
Plus there is such an overflow of YA books into movies right now. I mean, they got lucky with the Hunger Games, but other than that? Please stop. Wait a few years. Come up with something original.
The Giver novel came out in 1993, so it predates the YA resurgent quite a bit. The trailers sucked, as the first one pissed of those who read the novel, and it looked generically YA to everyone else.

I’m going to have to disagree with you about the YA genre not having enough original material. It’s a genre like any other genre, so movies deserve to be made. No one ever tells the comedy or romance genre to go away. Plus the YA genre of movies are specifically for teens and tweens. One could correctly argue that there are not enough epic fantasy movies for teens because most movies are targeted either towards little kids or mainly has too much adult content for teens. I think teenagers are a demographic that is often forgotten, causing them to actually steer more towards movies that promote sex and violence because they don’t want to be stuck seeing “Frozen”. Teens like to go to theater too, and teens are also very impressionable. I think it a good thing that a parent can drop off their kids at a movie theater without having to worry about them not having age appropriate choices. I love this genre myself. It is my most favorite probably because it employs my imagination and the story lines have moral to them. Yeah, when I’m watching these movies like Divergent or Hunger Games, somehow I still feel that their still may be hope that young people will still be able to have good impressionable movies that won’t make their minds age in a bad way.
Expendables will probably make a killing overseas. They like action stuff like that. But yeah, this is a bad year for big named action stars.
I always thought Daryl was asexual, which is why I think it’s so strange when people ship him with another character.
The thing is it doesn’t matter. People are trying to make this into a thing. They said it has been addressed and will continue to be addressed in the show. When Daryl isn’t busy surviving they are not hiding anything.
I think people want him to be gay because of his conservative survivalist lifestyle.
Unless it’s a part of the story line like Glen and Maggie, Rick, Lori, Shane. It’s not important.
Yes, Norman Reedus addressed this somewhat back when the Carol/Daryl fans (which I am one of) started up. He said that, to him, Daryl has such an abused background that he doesn’t know how to related in an emotional, romantic way to anyone else. He may not even be able to sexually. And the Zombie Apocalypse makes it worse and better. He’s grown as a person within this group and it has given him a family and a purpose which has allowed for some healing. But at the same time you are fighting for your life every day and there’s a real risk in getting attached to anyone. But I’ve never gotten any sense that Daryl was gay and repressing it. People used to say it about Carol too because of her haircut. I loved when they addressed it with Carol and Axel, the prisoner. He outright said he thought she was gay because of it and she laughed at him. It was actually a sweet, little flirty moment.
I saw it over the weekend and liked it. I hadn’t read the book, but went with people who had, and they didn’t have high hopes but ended up liking it too.
It may not have opened like some of the other YA book based films, but it also cost a fraction of their budgets, and will probably turn a profit when all is said and done.
That’s good to hear. My son read the book for English class last year and he said their teacher showed them the trailer and it did nothing to get them excited for the film. I’m going try to talk him into seeing it after all.

The militarization of police is insane. “Escalation of force”. “Die Mother F*er die”. Citizenry is the enemy of its government. The governor was profoundly patronizing.

I think she looks best with her natural supercurly ‘fro like hair in her natural blond color. I don’t know why she insists on straightening her poor hair into submission. I read an article on the movie, where Jeff Bridges said he fought to keep the movie similar to the book, especially the kids’ ages. But the producers (i.e., Harvey Weinstein) wouldn’t budge and Bridges was given the choice to “walk away” from this project that he spent so many years on. It was really sad.
Ugh. Harvey Weinstein is The Worst. He’s great at marketing his movies, but he really needs to take a step back on the creative front because his impulses are often bad ones.
Harvey Weinstein doesn’t give a shit about artistic value of a film. He aims his movies to be watched by an average movie-goer so when he produces a movie that might alienates his audience, he changes things. It is awful but it seems to be working well.
well i was never going to see this because I would like hollywood to stop ruining my childhood but I’m not surprised it bombed. This is such a classic that people were already worried and the trailers pretty much did the rest. Making it a typical YA genre story was just the cherry on top. I wish filmmakers and editors would stop pandering to teens…they can handle complex stories. Did you know that THG was never supposed to have a love triangle? It was forced by the editor of the books. Stuff like that is not necessary for teens to read/watch. Sucks that Harvey painted Jeff into a corner…ugh

I saw the giver on Saturday. It was OK, but the best part of it was the actor who plays Jonas. He is so hot. He made me want to keep watching even during the slower parts.
Don’t they have to wait a while before declaring bombitude? Word of mouth advertising etc. Plus school is just starting up and maybe its audience will be more interested later when it gets dark earlier…
