Taylor Swift in a Mary Katrantzou romper at the VMAs: tacky or adorable?

wenn21640903

Here are some photos of Taylor Swift at last night’s VMAs. Swifty was there to promote her new album and to perform the first single, “Shake It Of”. For the red carpet, Swifty wore this Mary Katrantzou romper and purple Elie Saab shoes. She looks like a Barbie, right? Even her body looks Barbie-esque. Obviously, the romper is horrible and not very flattering, but I guess props to Swifty for getting out of her comfort zone. The most offensive thing to me? The bangs.

Here’s her performance of “Shake It Off”. I didn’t really think this performance was one of the best of the night, but it was okay. Much like Ariana Grande, Swifty was trying to do too many things and she should have just been focused on singing. Her performance ensemble is by Lorena Sarbu – very cute. I like this better than her red carpet look.

By the way, I hope this new Guardian interview doesn’t get lost in this week’s shuffle of events. Swifty sat down with The Guardian just before last week’s major album announcement and it’s her first major interview in support of 1989you can read the full piece here. She talks about being a celebrity and how she doesn’t care what TMZ or Radar or other sites say about her at this point and I get the distinct impression she’s shading Miley Cyrus. Her most interesting quotes are about feminism and the accusations that she’s really not the woman-supporting-other-women sort of girl.

On feminism: “As a teenager, I didn’t understand that saying you’re a feminist is just saying that you hope women and men will have equal rights and equal opportunities. What it seemed to me, the way it was phrased in culture, society, was that you hate men. And now, I think a lot of girls have had a feminist awakening because they understand what the word means. For so long it’s been made to seem like something where you’d picket against the opposite sex, whereas it’s not about that at all. Becoming friends with Lena [Dunham] – without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for – has made me realise that I’ve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so.”

Her other-woman-hating song, “Better Than Revenge”: “I was 17 when I wrote that. That’s the age you are when you think someone can actually take your boyfriend. Then you grow up and realise no one take someone from you if they don’t want to leave.”

Her priorities: “Every artist has their set of priorities. Being looked at as sexy? Not really on my radar. But nice? I really hope that that is the impression.” She agrees that “nice” is often used pejoratively. “Totally! But I don’t care if that’s not cool, to seem nice or not. I’m not that focused on being cool and I never have been.”

[From The Guardian]

I just thought it was noteworthy because some of calling this year’s show “The Feminist VMAs” because of all of the ladies and lady-centric performances. I’ve never really considered Swifty a feminist, but it’s nice to see her grow and change and mature. I don’t really see how she changed her mind from “feminism = I hate boys” to “feminism = equality” just because Lena Dunham spoke to her without “preaching”?

Agh, that romper is horrible. I don’t care who you are, camel toe is not flattering. I will say one nice thing: at least she’s not wearing a neutral-toned bejeweled “fairy princess” gown.

    • Mmhmm says:

I hate the romper thing, but I must admit that her song has become my jam. Hated it at first, but it’s stuck now. She’s smart doing a pop album, it’ll make tons and then when she returns to country she’ll be bigger than ever.

    • phydeaux says:

Not only is the camel-toe obvious, but those Q’s on her boobs are strategically placed. Yuck!

    • Decloo says:

I kind of love it. She really has the smokin’ body for it. Also love the shoes with it. A camel-toe shield would have been appropriate here. Quick, somebody invent one.

    • GirlyGirl says:

I guess her clown suit was at the dry cleaners

  2. Eleonor says:

    Awul dress.
    Great legs and great shoes.
That’s all I have to say.

  3. QQ says:

Well at least one is recanting her twee “but i like boys so no feminist here 😊” stance

Yeah no that looked like a messy onesie that makes her almost not there ass look just like an entire back, someone in tumbler put her side by side with the dude from Napoleon Dynamite in that Ice skating movie and it was toooo good (Blades of Glory?)

    • Anna says:

LOL QQ I saw that comparison too! Did you see the one where it compared her to a 1950s synchronized swimmer?

I hated Taylor’s outfit on the red carpet, it looked baggy in places where it should’ve been tight and I think you can wear whatever you want no matter what body type you have but the way she was posing in it was a no no. She looked ridiculous, but at least it was different from her usual looks.
I feel like Taylor was probably more educated on feminism by Lorde but didn’t want to admit that a 16 year old taught her something that she was so completely wrong about

    • littlemissnaughty says:

I’m a bit shocked that she changed her tune and that she did so quite eloquently. Even if that’s publicist’s doing, I can’t say anything bad about her today. Just for that. Katy Perry would never.

Blades of Glory is my crack. And now I can’t unsee it, even the hair is reminiscent!!! Oh my God.

And that romper thing is not good in general although the girl has killer legs. But it looks SO uncomfortable. Like you can’t be sure if you’re able to sit without sticking to the seat.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

ITA. It’s really rare to see a celebrity express anything close to “I was wrong and I grew from it. I see things differently now.”

I can’t hate on her for that…but I WILL hate on her for that romper.

    • Size Does Matter says:

Great legs, but she looks like a kid about to leave for gymnastics class to me.

  4. Abbott says:

The Taylor Swift Show sponsored by Tina Knowles. Both of her looks were circa Bug-a-Boo. Terrible. She needs a bit more room in the crotch area.

  5. Kiddo says:

Good for Lena and Taylor for the education on feminism. The pejorative of the term is what happens when political factions appropriate a term to suit their own agendas, to the detriment of those being described within the movement.

On the romper: It looks like a ‘VD’ logo. V and D are always together, even though there are other random letters. Does the designer not know the historical usage or was it some subliminal tongue in cheek message?

  6. Josephine says:

It’s the VMAs, so I think it’s fine and different, and the shoes are awesome. She’s stuck to her same image, so I give her kudos for being one of the few younger performers who doesn’t need to get near-naked. And I know I’ll get bashed for this, but I actually like her hair, bangs included!

    • Esmom says:

Agree that the VMAs is about the only place where this getup is OK. When I saw it from the waist up, I thought it was a dress that I would like on her, the color is flattering. I was shocked when I saw it was a onesie but I think it’s ok for the venue.

Not with you on the hair, sorry, I think it’s horrendous. So dated looking, weirdly at odds with the edgier garment and shoes.

    • V4Real says:

She doesn’t need to get near naked you say?

If the girl bends over you can see what she had for breakfast.

      • Sabrine says:

It’s just a little too short and looks quite bad in the crotch area. I would think walking could easily turn that into a camel toe.

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Wow, that’s a great saying. So delightfully nasty yet hilarious and shocking at the same time. I’ll have to remember that one for when I really hate someone.

      • Josephine says:

It’s no different than a bathing suit, and not even a thong. She has very slowly been showing more skin, and this is so, so tame, I think the criticism is absurd.

      • Size Does Matter says:

V4Real, you win the Internet today. OMG I’m crying!

  7. Kate says:

It looks like something a newborn would be dressed in. Also, cameltoe.

As for that interview, I find her whole ‘I’m not one of the cool crowd’ shtick so tiring. Serious Taylor, you’re a pretty, thin, blonde millionare celebrity. So the cheerleaders didn’t invite you to sit at their table…time to move on.

    • wolfpup says:

      Yep – haha!

    • SpookySpooks says:

She gets ridiculed for being awkward in the media all the time, I like that she embraces it.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Amen. She’s gawky and awkward for sure, but she’s all about the preening, posing, and wardrobing to make herself look “like one of those girls” she has clearly never gotten over not being. She reminds me of a teen sitcom in which a blonde skinny chick is put in a pair of bifocals and told to slump over a bit and play the outcast.

    • kibbles says:

She is where she is today because she is tall, skinny, blonde, and cute. Her isolated vocals were horrible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hGau2tneAs

  8. Kaylah says:

It’s a borderline leotard. The shoes & the legs get an A+ but everything else NO! She doesn’t have an ass so things that look like that are not for her.

Why does her performance outfit look just like Beyonce’s Ralph & Russo two piece for her first shows after she had Blue Ivy? It even has the same bejewelled neck. Weird.

  9. sisi says:

she needed 1-2 inches more room lengthwise in the romper because her shoulders and crotch are begging for a little space to move. If she shrugs it’ll hurt. Also the look would work better if the hemline was horizontal, and the fabric wasn’t so… curtainy. It looks freaking cheap, like it’s been made out of a leftover scrap of cloth. That would expain why the fabric has been cut so poorly that the print doen’t line of in the front of the garment.

Kudos for wearing something unpredictable though…

I really like the shoes. This seasons shoefashion has been spectacularly shitty, so this pair is one of the best I’ve seen on the carpet in a long time.

    • Abbott says:

So glad someone said it… If she was doing her signature shoulder dancing in the audience, that must’ve chafed.

  10. Audrey says:

I really love what she said about a girl not being able to steal a guy, he has to want to leave.

The girls who go after taken guys are awful. But he’s the one in a relationship. It’s his responsibility to stay loyal

  11. grace says:

It looks like a diaper. It’s awful!

  12. in_theory says:

Two words: Too. Short. Whereas I’m usually just bored when looking at her, this outfit makes me uncomfortable. Can’t wait for the ladies at Fug Nation to have their take on this one.

  13. Lucy2 says:

    That romper is awful.
At least she’s owning up to past mistakes and has a better understanding now, but ugh to the Lena stuff, she still bugs me.

    • Esmom says:

Ditto on the ugh to the Lena stuff. As if she is the only bastion of feminism, her personal guru.

  14. Fran says:

Man that lip syncing was terrible. She sang all of four actual words that whole time.

  15. Frida_K says:

Camel toe in the front, non-existent butt cheeks hanging out in the back.

    She’s so edgy!

  16. avh says:

She’s way too thin… and her hair colour looks like an ash tone out of a box. She needs a styling intervention asap!

  17. Gina says:

She’s tall, blonde and skinny, sounds great on paper…but oh my my Taylor….what the dileo? I picture her at 40 something with the same fans, same moves, same everything. I get embarrassed for her trying to dance, but I guess if success in life is based on dollars, she wins.

  18. Dani2 says:

For once I actually like what she has to say in an interview. I really like this quote, “then you grow up and realise no one takes someone from you if they don’t want to leave”. Good on you for sounding your age, Taylor.

    As for her outfit
Hair – she needs to sort out her awkward hair stage
    Romper/jumpsuit – shouldn’t have been worn

    Her performance
It really was alright but not one of my favourite performances, and no one in the crowd looked very impressed either.

  19. Valentina says:

I think the biggest problem with that outfit are the two big Qs where her nipples should be, my eyes kept going right there.

  20. InvaderTak says:

Is she starting to look smug? I get a very smug vibe here. And her hair is bad. Why does it always look like a wig? In this case from dynasty?

  21. Sozual says:

Nicki Minaj lip singing as a rapper! Beyonce really has upped her acting game. Her acting when accepting the award …amazing. I thought it was legit at first, but after watching it a couple of times…ehhh, She wants people to believe she has such a perfect life and said so at the beginning of the performance.

  22. GiGi says:

No, no, no. Why does ANYONE make rompers with a center seam? It’s just inviting camel toe and it’s so, so unfortunate looking. Blech. And did she look in the mirror and think, “Ah, perfect! Now everyone will be talking about my vagina and will overlook my terrible singing.”? So bad.

  23. Syko says:

    Hate the romper.

    My first thought: Cameltoe!

My second thought: Why does she always stand like that with her hand on her non-existent hip? ALWAYS!

  24. Adrien says:

Someone on twitter pointed out that her hair and romper looked like Jon Heder’s hair and peacock costume in Blades of Glory.

  25. Adrien says:

Mary Katrantzou. I don’t understand her.

  26. PunkyMomma says:

Want the shoes, no to the romper, hate the bangs too.

  27. SpookySpooks says:

So, she’s one of the few famous young women who knows what feminsm is, she recognised that she was wrong about it before and she somehow gets shaded for it? Really? Fascinating. And I like what she said about a boyfriend not being able to be stolen.
I like her hair, the romper is pkay too. Her perfomance was very cute.
Her songs aren’t any less juvenile than 90 percent of pop songs in the mainstream media, plus, she writes them herself. To me, that’s more important than Ariana’s huge range or Beyonce’s million back up dancers.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Except that they really are more whiny and juvenile and she has a co-writer just like almost every other pop star out there. It’s her calculating and image-driven reasons for what she puts out there that really drives me crazy though.

  28. Hissyfit says:

That romper is ugly and I really hate that hairstyle on her! I’d like to keep the shoes though!

Her performance was fun but nothing special. The camera showed JLO and Gwen and I think I saw JLO telling Gwen Stefani “she’s so cute” after Taylor’s performance. I think that’s what Taylor was aiming for, cutesy and she did it.

  29. JH says:

That isn’t an outfit!! That’s a bathing suit with heels.

  30. mattylove says:

Anyone else feel like t – swizzle is angling to be a VS model? Her friends, her workouts, her outfits? I think she wants to be asked…

  31. eliza says:

Frankly I wish women would wear pants again and men would pull up their pants again.

  32. Blythe says:

Who let her out the house like that? She looked so silly, man. I felt bad. I bet she chose the romper and she loved it so bad that no one had the heart to tell her she looked like a court jester. Taylor’s another one who can’t sell sex. Just don’t do it, girl. It’s not for you. Just stick with the cowboy boots and fairy dresses.

  33. Cinderella says:

    Her outfit looks itchy.

The more I watch and listen to all things Taylor Swift, the more I’m starting to wonder if her old boy John had her pegged in “Paper Doll”.

  34. cat says:

I’ve sort of come to like her but why the posing? She’s a musician, not a model and not an actress. Musicians shouldn’t pose like that, imho. Although I guess she is now acting also. Still. It’s much too posey.

  35. Jelly says:

“Every artist has their set of priorities. Being looked at as sexy? Not really on my radar.”

Sorry, but that is BS. You don’t put your ass out and do an over the shoulder pose if you are not courting the ‘sexy’ vibe. Taylor is the worst kind of “effortless perfection” purveyors – telling girls that have to be beautiful and hot and smart and successful, but you can’t be open about how difficult it is to “do it all.” You have to be some superchic. God forbid people think you are bossy or demanding. Or that you have to put your ass out there because that is your job.
Sorry, give me Nikki Minaj or Miley Cyrus – who are not trying to sell anybody that their job is easy and everybody is always super supportive when they assert themselves. That as artists there are mixed emotions about success in a music industry where you want independence, but also need to play a game where your sexiness is commodified. Taylor Swift’s sunshine and ice cream narrative is just ridiculous – I dont know why she is not called on it more.

  36. SnarkGirl says:

I love the fabric, but what they did with it was a big bowl of no.

She looks like an escapee from some cheesy 1960s sci-fi flick, complete with bouffant helmet hair.

  37. BendyWindy says:

Her legs are to DIE for. I like the shoes. The hair, girl, no. I think this romper would have been better in a different fabric. I like the cut, but the pattern is tacky.

I also like the quote about being 17 and still thinking that someone can “take” your boyfriend, and growing up and realizing that’s not quite true. I hope she actually has learned that lesson.

  38. Dawn says:

If had legs ike that I would be showing them off at every chance as well! I think she looks marvelous, simpley marvelous! Her makeup is young and fresh and so is her hair. I would say this is a win!

  39. Dancinnancy says:

Her performance outfit was adorable and she was working it. She can’t sing at all – but she sure knows how to put on a show!

That blue mess should be burned.

  40. HoustonGrl says:

Anorexic model who can barely sing wears swimsuit to the VMAs.

  41. Lucy says:

Eh, she simply grew up and educated herself, I guess. So good for her!!!

  42. maybeiamcrazy says:

I liked this interview. I hope Taylor introduces Lena to Shailene Woodley.

  43. BadAssCompass says:

she has great legs but I just don’t see her as a fashion it girl or someone provocative. She’s too sugar fairy for this to work and romper is really cheaply cut to begin with so it looks like the bottoms were a forgotten item instead of standalone.

  44. Wallamalooo says:

Can’t she just go the f**k away now? Crap music, awful personality, face like an Uber Mean Girl. YUCK.

    **Pms week**

  45. Annie says:

All I can see when I look at this romper is “VD”. Literally.

  46. JMS says:

Great body, killer legs, I think Taylor looks amazing, mainly because she wore something completely unexpected. I love the thought of a daring Taylor who tries new things and doesn’t give a damn about what anyone else thinks. I hope she surprises us again on her next red carpet appearance.

  47. tarheel says:

I’ve always liked Swifty. She seems like a nice kid, is a great songwriter, gives a lot of money to charity, and loves kitties. The one thing that has always annoyed me about her is her slut-shaming song about Camilla Belle, and she just apologized for that. Glad she’s realized you can’t “steal” someone form someone, and she’s probably also realized that Belle and Joe Jonas were just being beards for one another anyway.

Don’t really like the onesie, but she has the gams and look to pull it off.

  48. kri says:

johnny weir must be totally pissed that bitch stole his Guys Nite out Onesie. I hope she had a rolaid on hand for her lady parts cause she sure overstuffed them with fabric.

  49. Carrie says:

The real test of whether or not she actually ‘gets’ feminism now will be if she finally stops doing the virgin vs whore thing in her songs and videos.

  50. Lauraq says:

Confession time: I LOVE Better Than Revenge. Great cardio song. And it makes me giggle because before I started dating my fiancee, there was this girl we worked with that was leading him along for the benefits of having a dude that likes you on retainer. When he started seeing me and lost interest in her, because I actually LIKED him, she basically accused me of stealing her toy. So I always think of myself as the other woman in that song 😀
