Julia Roberts in a blue Elie Saab mini at the Emmys: exhausting or adorable?

wenn21644964

SO MUCH JULIA. Julia was one of the few “movie stars” who deigned to appear at last night’s Emmys. And much like Matthew McConaughey, Julia lost her Emmy race (to Fabulous Kathy Bates) and her sore-loser face made me laugh and laugh. And then there was some instant-karma when I made my sore-loser face when Benedict Cumberbatch won and he wasn’t even there. So, karma is a bitch. Noted. Plus, Julia got a chance to look smug when The Normal Heart won Best TV Movie. So, the night was not a complete loss for her.

Julia wore this short Elie Saab dress which is… okay. I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it. Julia has moved into more matronly, mature looks over the past four years or so, but she still likes showing off her legs when she can. Even though this look is ALL LEG, I find it too conservative. I wonder if I would have liked this better if it had still been a short/minidress but with a straight skirt rather than a ruffled/tiered look. I think a straight skirt would have been really sexy here, right?

As for Julia’s whole shtick where she’s the most important person in whatever room she’s in… it gets on my last nerve, but what else do you expect from her? She managed to make Best Actor in a Drama Series all about her as she prattled on and on while on-stage. CB thought Julia sounded drunk. Yeah, drunk on her own self-importance! She’s always like that.

And just for some sharp relief from The Julia Show, here’s Mindy Kaling in Kenzo. I have to give it to Mindy, she’s the model of professionalism. She was notably snubbed as a writer and as an actress – even though The Mindy Project was killing it last season – and she still showed up to hustle and present. Good for you, girl.

I’m glad she lost. I don’t care for homewreckers.

    • hot chocolate says:

      YES!!

    • Wallamalooo says:

Woah careful – they like their homewreckers on this site 😛 But yes, agreed. She’s just a horrible person and it’s starting to show on that used-to-be-gorgeous face.

      • MrsB says:

Used to be gorgeous? I don’t care for the blonde hair, but I think her face is just as stunning as ever!

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

It’s certainly your prerogative to dislike certain celebrities that are ‘homewreckers’….to the point of not supporting their films, etc–but I’d hope that there would be a lot more criteria than that. Meaning–I’d hope that you want her to lose because she can’t act (imo), than for something that she did over ten years ago….

I dislike Julia Roberts because she is smug, entitled, can’t act, and whether or not she ‘homewrecked’ Danny Moder–the way that she went after his soon to be ex wife was disgusting. I dislike her a lot more for that, than the ‘homewrecking’. But if I thought that Julia could act (beyond Pretty Woman, and all she had to do was be sassy and cute), then I’d be first in line to her films–I don’t care, she could’ve been out in the middle of LA w/Moder.

      But just my opinion..

      • BooBooLaRue says:

With you VC on this – totally.

      • LahdidahBaby says:

Exactly, VC, agree with every word.

      • Penelope says:

Agree with VC on all counts. Well done!

      • eastsidej says:

She is ugly on the inside acts so sweet but I’m sure she’s quite nasty….

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I wasn’t trying to be rude or judgy in what I said, but I just find it interesting when people say they won’t watch a certain celeb’s movies because they cheated on their wife/husband. Barring people like Roman Polanski, I’ll watch anything, no matter my personal feelings on the actor.

Like I think Kevin Spacey is a HUGE asshole, of the nth degree. But guess what? That asshole can ACT. And I will happily go and watch all of his movies/tv shows, now knowing that the reason that he and Fameho Kate Bosworth got along so well was because he’s an a-hole.

    • may23 says:

As much as I don’t like to get involved in other people’s business… YES!

      • Petunia says:

Kevin Spacey is an ACTOR!!! Can we all stop and have a moment of clarity?…., it’s a certain attention seeking personality that Pursues acting/ theatre/ show biz. Not saying there aren’t exceptions, ( you have to agree, kindness is a celebrated rarity). These self anamored grandiose personalities are vital for our entertainment. They are almost always selfish asshats. Combine this with recognition and fame and you have the perfect storm of a disgusting display of a human being. Most of these desperate fame whores are despicable human beings. Unfortunately, we celebrate them instead of remembering that at one time, they were literally court gestures. Jokes to entertain the masses. I appreciate theatre and the arts. However, there are super talented individuals who simply do there jobs. To be “papped” shopping is so stomach turning desperate and classifies them as try hard losers. Hello, publicists, feel free to hire me as you’ve all lost focus.

    • delorb says:

What about the guy who also wrecked his home? Of the two of them, he is the only one who actually broke a vow (or two). I’m sure he didn’t accidentally fall into Julia’s crotch over and over again.

BTW, I’m also glad she didn’t win. The dress is cute, but at the end of the day its still Julia wearing it, so it automatically becomes tacky.

    • jo says:

      AMEN SISTA

  2. Eleonor says:

Did she really think she had a chance with Kate Bates ? AH !

    • Dio says:

Oh he’ll yeah she thought she’d win over Kathy Bates! She’s a legend only in her own mind! I bow to Kaiser for her spot on sentiments on Roberts; she is the only person in media w/the courage to say exactly what many of us thought. Kudos Kaiser!
Mean spirited Roberts has been this way for @ least the last 15-20 years. The niece, Emma, she took under her wing is her clone & headed down the same path! Won’t see any project either one is in….

  3. Francis says:

I like it. Julia’s face looks glowing.
Maybe it could be a tad longer?
    Not wild about Julia blonde.

    • Buckwild says:

Agreed on the hair. Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman are both actresses who look better dark (either brown or red) but seem to prefer the blonde which washes them out.

    • bella says:

      i agree.
i haven’t seen julia’s face look so lovely and glowing and youthful in several years.
she’s had some brightening done for sure – maybe a peel – and i think that she’s lost some weight/bloat which is why her face looked so lovely.
i prefer julia as a brunette as well, but for whatever reason, this blonde shade looked good.
love the color of her dress and i agree that she has gone to matronly style over recent years, but this dress is a small step back to modern and fresh.
and YES – i also agree with CB – she was drunk – borderline slurring.
there’s a fine line enjoying the night with a cocktail before you go up to present.
i couldn’t handle it…i’d have to wait to take that glass of wine till after my presentation!

    • chaine says:

i’m not a julia fan, but i think she looks great here and refreshingly natural after all the Kardashians. her facial angles have softened nicely with age and she looks genuinely happy. the color of the dress is complementary and I like the hair color, too.

  4. Lilacflowers says:

Julia’s dress is much better than some of her recent lack-of-efforts; it is as if she decided that the big movie star was going to show the little television people how to dress but it was still a mis-step. Those big beads are just too much. And I wanted to throw something at my television when she was presenting. How presumptuous of her to think that the big prize was the winner would get to hug her? As if any of them would want to hug her? So glad she got her comeuppance from the great Kathy Bates – and I didn’t think Julia’s performance in Normal Heart deserved nomination.

  5. Kiddo says:

I think the style and color on Julia was mature, yet not too old, but my problem with it was that the material came across as way too heavy, like a Winter dress. It looks lighter in these stills than on stage.

I’m starting to like Mindy’s show. Some of the characters added have made it much better, after I had abandoned it after the first season.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree, Julia’s dress is an almost. Fabric is too heavy. But I think she’s gorgeous and her legs are so pretty.

      Just love me some Mindy.

      • mimif says:

Mindy’s Instagram is fun; she’s got some great style/stylists working for her.

I like Julia’s hair dark auburn a la Sandy Bullock. I think the blonde just washes her out. Her dress would have been so fun sleeveless!

  6. Lee says:

Looks like something Jessica Simpson would wear. I like the colour.

  7. Linn says:

Not a fan of the dress and the haircolor does not suit her at all.

    • Belle Epoch says:

I think Julia looks like a witch! Give her a broom and watch her fly out of there cackling!

  8. Marianne says:

I’m kind of torn, because I do like the dress a lot, but I’m just not sure its right for her.

Poor Mindy though. I really love The Mindy Project and it has been getting no love. Maybe The Golden Globes will step up.

  9. jessica6 says:

I never cared for Julia Roberts – too much up on and into herself for my liking. Her dress does zero for me; I hate the “bead” work on it, and for me, it’s too short. I will say she does have nice legs, but, I don’t know if I’d wear too short a cut after a certain age. I personally prefer a classic, simple, and more form-fitting cut, but not overly tight.

Mindy’s gown does nothing for me, either. I don’t care for the silver material on it. This gown would look so much better if it was a solid navy blue, sky blue or perhaps olive green with no “additives”.

  10. Josephine says:

This is pretty good for Julia – she finally wore something that gives her a waist. But I agree about the skirt. It’s too cutesy and she’s done the mini to death. That “I’m so awkward I’m cute” look/pose of hers is getting way too old.

  11. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I can’t stand Julia Roberts. And she has gotten very unattractive to me. I don’t know what it is–but UGH. Maybe it’s because every time I look at her face, all I see is SMUG.

  12. Caitlin Bruce says:

I love the Mindy Project her and Chris(Danny) have so much chemistry. It’s a absolutely better than New Girl.

  13. Lucy2 says:

I think I would’ve liked Julia’s if it was a straight long skirt. She really did annoy me when she presented.
    Mindy looks good.

  14. Flounder says:

I would have loved the same length dress but more form fitted. She has Great legs!!

    • Sullivan says:

Agree. She really does have great legs. In fact, though the dress wasn’t ideal, she looked glowingly pretty.

  15. MG says:

I don’t get why Julia went blonde so many years ago. Her red hair was amazing and made her stand out! Her legs look great.

  16. MrsBPitt says:

Pissed me off when Julia went on and on before announcing the best actor….can’t stand her…but she does have great legs!

  17. Blythe says:

Did you hear her mess when presenting the Best Actor in a Drama award? Cringeworthy. She, clearly, had a few sips of the Goose. She didn’t even know what she was doing. Her smile is still a winner though. That’s the only thing that’ll make me cheer for Julia.

    • jessica6 says:

I don’t know, ever since I heard how she treats her sister like a bag of sh*t, I just can’t with this woman.

    • Kiddo says:

To me, with all of her bravado on talk shows, etc. this instance made me uncomfortably aware of how self conscious and insecure she actually is, underneath it all. You can also see it in her posture, at times.

    • Anna says:

I just wished Julia would shut up when presenting awards and read the prompter. She does this everytime she’s presenting, she did a very similar thing a few years ago for the best actor category at the Oscars and it was so awkward. She’s so self-absorbed

      • Lilacflowers says:

She did an extremely similar thing when presenting the In Memorium segment of the Oscars once and it was unbelievably inappropriate. And then there was how Denzel’s win was all because of her. I don’t understand why producers continue to ask her to present.

      • AM says:

        Lilac,
I don’t remember the In Memorium, but you just gave me the biggest laugh, so thanks for that.

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

Ugh, I ffwd’ed the youtube vid after the first five seconds of her babble to get to Bryan Cranston. Just once I wish someone would get up after she’s made the award all about her and like hand it back to her or something to make a point.

      • Dio says:

Yes Lilac Flowers! What she did with Denzel was a crime!!! She Kanye’d Denzel for his award and wouldn’t shut up! Made it all about her as if she was solely responsible for his win… His wife Pauletta’s face was silent outrage, appropriately so.

  18. Hissyfit says:

This “homewrecker” term needs to go away. When a relationship is done and the guy moved on fast, it’s always the girl who homewrecked, right? That the guy had totally no say in it. Like he was some kind of an innocent puppy stolen from the owner, boo hoo.

I like Julia’s dress. At first i got this icky feeling seeing those bejeweled stones, it looks like a skin disease but it’s growing on me. Lol. She has really nice legs. And she still looks great. I am glad Normal Heart won. I loved that drama.

I love Mindy Project too but I know it didn’t have any chance.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I have to agree with you about “homewrecker,” though I have mixed feelings. My first husband cheated on me with a woman who worked for him. She was 15 years younger, and when she fell in love with him, she befriended stupid me so she could get closer to him. I was unaware of the whole scheme, but she did such a good job that I developed feelings for her like she was my younger sister or daughter. We did things separately from my husband and together with him. She started copying everything I did, which got sort of weird, then I noticed that he seemed interested in her in an inappropriate way. It’s a long story, but eventually I came home hours early from work one day and they were at my house together. He was the one who betrayed me, I know, but so did she. She went after him, and used me to get to him. He wrecked our home, but so did she. So the part about home wrecker that doesn’t bother me is the part that says going after another woman’s husband is low. But the part that does bother me is what you said – it absolves the man of any responsibility. He was the who promised me fidelity, not she. (Her?) ultimately, though she sucked, he was the one who broke us up.

      • tracking says:

I’m so sorry that happened to you, GoodNamesAllTaken. It’s sad and, frankly, creepy. It does take two to wreck a home, and the person that took the vow should be the most culpable. I understand that many have a problem with heaping blame on the “other woman” while treating the man benignly–it is sexist, fair enough–but it is indeed low to pursue a married person. The attitude that there’s no blame due to a presumption that the relationship was “done” (big assumption!), or that person wasn’t the one who took the vow, is BS. Cheating is duplicitous and selfish, and just plain sucks. End a relationship with dignity before you move on.

      • Kiddo says:

Wow, much scheming and conniving. She most certainly betrayed you. She gained your trust to use you. But on the up side, what a POS your ex set himself up with.
Sociopathic tendencies don’t exist in a vacuum with only one victim.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        Kiddo, they lasted one year.

Tracking, thanks. It was bad at the time, but it pushed me into leaving, which I really needed to do. It taught me that I’m worth fighting for and all kinds of other valuable lessons that apparently I needed to be run over with a mac truck to get. Lol

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

        That’s an awful story, GNAT.

I hope his gherkin was worth losing a great friendship over.

You’re better off without those toxic sh*tstains.

      • Mingy says:

How terrible! That kind of betrayal must’ve been devastating (sorry to state the obvious). When I was in my teens, my very close friend was very open about her feelings about my bf at the time – who I was sooo in love with…it was sickening, she would tell me about these dreams she’d have of him, she’d “run into him” often, I would catch her staring at him like she was about to pounce.
I can’t find a better way to describe that kind of person better than toxic shit stains, thanks Kitten!

      • Ange says:

That’s terrible and I’m glad you got out… but judging from that story did your husband date Leann Rimes?

    • KAI says:

      Hissyfit,

I don’t think you understand what the term ‘homewrecker’ means. No one labels a person who begins dating a separated person, even very soon after separation, a homewrecker. A homewrecker is someone (male or female) who embarks on a relationship with a married person unbeknownst to the other spouse.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

It’s a sexist term that usually absolves men of any/all responsibility in a marriage and puts the onus squarely on the woman’s shoulders.

Interestingly enough, when a woman cheats on her husband she usually bares all the responsibility for destroying the marriage and breaking up her family. Why doesn’t she get to reap the benefits of the “homewrecker” label getting attached to the man she cheated with? Huge and glaring double-standard there.

Not only that, but the “homewrecker” term is a gross oversimplification of a very complex issue that usually involves three people, all with separate feelings and needs.

We can do better, ladies. Let’s stop acting like men are objects that can be stolen.

      • Jayna says:

@TheOriginalKitten, exactly. Men leave their wives. They have a choice. They aren’t stolen.

      • KAI says:

The terms does apply to both men and women. You hear women called it more often because, statistically, men cheat more than women and often with women who are single. That is changing with more and more women in the workforce but the term has always applied to both sexes.

      • lisa2 says:

I think many women.. NOT ALL.. blame the woman the man is with because they still want the man. They will attack the woman and are sometimes very measured in what they say about the man.. I believe for some women.. NOT ALL that they leave the door open for the possibility of him coming back to her.

I don’t understand that but that is how I see it.

      • KAI says:

I think you are correct lisa2. It’s very difficult for a man or a woman to understand why their spouse, sometimes of many many years, would cheat and many hope to repair the marriage, especially when there are children involved.

It would therefore be easier to blame the third party in order to be able to forgive your spouse.

    • tracking says:

Ha ha, GoodNamesAllTaken, good for you. Sometimes it does take a mac truck. Glad to hear those jerks flamed out.

  19. Dingo says:

Nice dress -just wish JR would change her hair back to brown or red – hate the blond on her.

“It took the superpowers of Erin Brockavich and the Incredible Hulk” was kind of fun!

  20. Kristen says:

She made me cringe with her prattling on and on. “Winner gets to HUG ME!” Gag.

She does look pretty. I’ll give her that.

  21. Adrien says:

Love her outfit. She’s not trying to look youthful but she’s not drab looking either. The hair though.

  22. JudyK says:

Didn’t like Julia’s dress…too casual (more cocktail style) for the Emmys.

She’s so loud and coarse…just don’t care for either her looks or her personality.

    • MB says:

ITA! She may have great legs, the color of the dress was good for her, yoda yada yada, but I felt like she was making a statement about how she ‘deigned to attend’ only to ‘accept an award’ only befitting that her stature as an Oscar winning actress. Puleeze, the Emmys are to TV what Oscars are to Movies, and these days, look at how many prominent directors and actors are flocking to TV? I didn’t see any other actresses wearing short dresses. Shoot, even Robin Wright’s outfit was a stylized white tuxedo.

Lesson learned Ms. Roberts, honor the event as you would wish to be honored. Notice Kathy Bates? Look at what Ryan Murphy did for her there…

  23. Talie says:

She was not pleased she lost!

  24. starrywonder says:

Ugh she sucks. And I love how she’s getting slammed for turning Best Actor into an all about her speech. Man she needs to disappear for a while

    • Christin says:

      She needs another decade-long semi-retirement, I think.

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens as her kids get a little older. Will she return to acting full blast, and will she stay married?

I don’t think her marriage will last past her kids turning 18.

  25. poppy says:

    peplum = NO

  26. eliza says:

That dress, IMO, is too young for Roberts.

  27. Dids says:

I love, love, love Mindy Khaling…… But I hate, hate, hate her dress!!! I was so dissapointed with her choice 🙁

    • MyCatLoves TV says:

I was thinking when I saw Mindy’s dress that she has sortof the same body type as Lena Dunham but she looked lovely in her outfit. I don’t keep up with Mindy so maybe she has a history of rocking some fab looks and maybe this particular dress wasn’t up to her norm but I thought she was beautiful! (And compared to the horror Lena wore……!!!)

      • Dids says:

I actually think it fits her very well. I just dont like the color, the neckline.. and the weird black line…. She usually goes for prints and cool colors and shapes… I guess I should lower my expectations 🙂

  28. tracking says:

I really love this dress–beautiful color, texture, and gorgeous sculptural silhouette–but agree with those that think the hair could have been better (up would have been nice with this dress).

  29. kibbles says:

I’ve been reading some mean-spirited and awful comments on other websites about Mindy Kaling being fat/overweight. It’s sad that a curvy and healthy woman is being attacked because she isn’t a size 4. The dress isn’t exceptional but she looked fine and most importantly she looked happy and like she was having a good time.

  30. Mrs. Darcy says:

I hate that Mindy doesn’t get more kudos, New Girl is just a sinking ship at this point and while I do like Zooey I feel Mindy is contributing more to portraying what it’s like to be a single female (or what I imagine from my old married lady armachair). Her Emmy look is not my favourite on her but she looks pretty and I still like her dress better than Julia’s beaded lampshade. Hate the blonde on Julia “so tacky” too.

  31. smee says:

Ugggh – ITA on your feelings for Julia Robert’s – she’s just SO full of herself. The way she walks in those shoes – clomping along. I think she thinks she looks like a leggy gamine, but walking like that just adds to the general horse feeling I get from her face.

Mindy looks great in that color, but I’m not feeling that trim on the dress. She’s short and curvy and knows how to dress her body shape. She totally should have been nominated – she’s so talented. I like the Mindy Project, but I’m not crazy about how much Chris Messina it has.

  32. jane berk says:

Love love the Julia Roberts dress-She’s gorgeous and the dress was so flattering and not boring and beige. The awards however WERE boring. How many times can you give the same people and the same show the same award? Enough of Breaking Bad….the Emmy’s have to re-think this agenda or they won’t have a viewer left. I turned it off early on-just too dull. Did love the Julia LDreyfus kiss tho-she’s hilarious.

    • Addie says:

weighing in very late here but I have to agree – I think she looks incredible and still really natural.
Compared to so many actresses her age (esp. ones that have had way more work) that just don’t look that great anymore – she is still looking dynamite.

  33. TxGal says:

I’ve never liked Julia R especially since she is a home-wrecker. She does not look good at all, looks more like a transgender lol. The dress is not appealing at all.

  34. jane says:

Julia Roberts looks fantastic whether you like her or not.

  35. JH says:

I LOVE Mindy, but that dress is FUG.
Julia (and I’m not a fan at all) looked great.

  36. Jayna says:

Danny came with her to the Emmy’s? Wow. Did he walk the red carpet or just skip that and sit with her?

I don’t know what Julia has been doing this past year but she’s back to her cuteness. She had begun to look more mature facewise for years and just didn’t sparkle like her younger days, but she has got that vivaciousness back to her looks. . Ruh-oh, Julia must be getting ready to leave Danny, got her eye on another man, getting all sexy. J/K

The dress is very pretty on her. I love the color also.

  37. Pandy says:

I’m not a Julia fan but I do like the dress and her hair is okay too (despite always liking her as a red head). Mindy’s dress looks great on her and she’s not a waif. Why can’t Lena dress herself better than that monstrosity she wore? #swandress

  38. Lydia Says says:

I am glad that Kathy Bates won. Well deserved. Julia did a great job in the Normal Heart as well. I think she looks good . I like the dress. It’s playful and sassy but still elegant and pretty. Mindy looks beautiful.

  39. Mel says:

    The dress is all right.
She, on the other hand, isn’t. Never has been.

  40. Tamara says:

Lol, making it all about her and doing her “shtick” instead of just presenting the damn leading actor award- sounds very similar to JLaw at the Oscars! I’m surprised no ones mentioned it yet, especially given the America’s Sweetheart tag both Julia Roberts and now Jennifer Lawrence have been anointed with. Found both annoying, though Julia slightly less because at least she was still lauding said actors while JLaw had to go distract from the Best Actor Oscar in her usual way.

  41. SK says:

I love Kathy Bates; but I actually thought Angela Bassett should have won this one. She was fantastic in Coven!!

Can’t stand Julia but she looks fantastic in this dress. Her legs look amazing here.

Love Mindy; but I don’t love this dress. The fabric and silver strips look… Cheap?

  42. Sara says:

Even my husband love the Mindy Project, that’s how good it is! It’s one of the only shows that makes me laugh out loud. So depressing is gets snubbed, but I guess that’s how it goes.
