Kaley Cuoco in Monique Lhuillier at the Emmys: cute, flattering or tragic?

wenn21647885

I saw some photos of Kaley Cuoco at one of the pre-Emmy events, and I didn’t even recognize her because she had plastered down her hair with gel and bobby pins. It was a strangely good look for her. Much better than what happened at the Emmys. I think we can safely say that the haircut was a bad idea and no amount of “trims” will fix it. She really shouldn’t have cut it any shorter than shoulder-length, I think.

Anyway, Kaley was there with her husband Ryan Sweeting. There’s a tabloid rumor going around that Kaley wants to do a post-nup to protect her substantial assets if and when this marriage goes into the toilet. Is that what her face is saying to you? Is that her “Ruh-roh, what if he walks away with $40 million?” face? As for the dress… it’s Monique Lhuillier. I’m not into it but I don’t hate it.

Mayim Bialik in Oliver Tolentino. This looks like the kind of dress Laura Bush or Hillary Clinton would wear. So matronly.

Julianne Hough was trying to attempt some high-fashion origami style with this Dsquared gown and it failed miserably. So now she just looked pregnant in a weird dress.

  1. Sarah says:

Looks like Kaley forgot to put on her makeup and did a quick fix in the car or something. Weird to be so “un-put-together” at a big event like the Emmys.

    • JudyK says:

      She also looks boozey.

      • Erinn says:

Her face seems a bit puffier than normal… and I agree with Sarah – her makeup is way off. It looks like what I could accomplish.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Short hair on a round, cheek-y face is not a good look.

It doesn’t help that she always makes weird faces when being photographed.

      • JenniferJustice says:

Oh she’s making a weird face. Good to know. I thought she was sucking on a Jolly Rancher.

    • atrain says:

I don’t get the appeal of her. She looks like every girl I went to high school with that decided to get a mom haircut after having kids. There’s nothing special about her.

      • Sabrine says:

If Kaley’s husband doesn’t agree to a “post-nup” it’s pretty obvious he’s in it for the money. She made a big mistake there not protecting her assets.

  2. BooBooLaRue says:

Kaley looks like a Valentine! Love the dress, the hair is meh.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Yeah I think she looks cute, the dress suits her. I don’t care for her current hairstyle, it doesn’t flatter her, IMO.

  3. Dinah says:

Kuoco looks as though she’s trying to resemble Miley Cyrus, who as of late, is in turn emulating Jennifer Lawrence.

  4. in_theory says:

I think Kaley Cuoco looks cute, I like her hair a lot. Mayim Bialik looks like Mary Stuart on the way to her execution.

    • The Original G says:

      Bingo.

    • Snazzy says:

OMG Mary Stuart … YES exactly!

    • LadyMTL says:

Keep in mind that Mayim Bialik is conservative Jewish and she always wears sleeves – religious reasons. So while I agree that the dress is very meh, I can’t really say too much against it because she’s always going to be more limited in her gown choices.

      • Hayley says:

Yes! Every fashion post about her here is about how matronly she looks and I just wanna scream “get over it!” because that’s always going to be how she dresses. I loved the colour of this gown but wish there was a belt or sash in the middle, something.

      • Bob Loblaw says:

Even with the clothing restrictions she opts to live by she could look less matronly. You can dress conservatively and not look like a grandmother.

    • PunkyMomma says:

I was thinking more Mary Todd Lincoln, but Mary Stuart works for me.

  5. JessSaysNo says:

Everyone on this page… looks hideous! Kaley’s waist is so small but her shoulders make the dress look like its falling down. Mayim’s dress DOES look like a very conservative inauguration gown! Julianne looks like I did at 9 months pregnant wrapping a towel around myself after a shower. Yikes!

    • delorb says:

      @Jess

Julianne looks so thirsty. She looks like she’d actually cut a bitch on her mad dash to the top.

  6. Lily says:

Kaley’s dress and hair combo somehow make her look very frumpy. I really like Mayim’s dress the color is beautiful!

  7. Jaderu says:

It’s amazing what a stroll through a supermarket parking lot with Superman can do for a girl’s career.

    • RobN says:

The little fling with Superman had nothing to do with the $1 million an episode she just scored for a hit show that started in 2007.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Superman got her noticed by the tabs but she had already fallen into the BBT pot-o-honey and was a well-known “geek-goddess” of long-standing.

    • delorb says:

I think that trip hurt her more than helped her. Everyone knew it was fake and a PR stunt. Henry is gay, but closeted.

  8. Mia4S says:

Post-nup?! Hahahahaha! Yeah I’m sure he’ll be all in favour of that. Your own fault dearie.

  9. smee says:

Kaley has a tendency to purse her mouth in a weird (unflattering) way – like in the first pic! I like her dress, but I agree, her hair looks best shoulder length. I bet she sure does want a post-nup after her raise! I get no vibe from her man – I think maybe he just looks good (to her).

Poor Mayim Bialik. You know she thought she looked fan-freaking-tastic in that. It is too matronly – ages her unnecessarily. Maybe being Amy Farrah Fowler is starting to have a negative effect on her!

    • atrain says:

Yes – she tries to pose hard and always ends up failing. She looks like me trying to emulate Vogue poses in my bathroom mirror.

      • delorb says:

Yeah. That first pose looks like it hurts. I think her dress is very pretty and she looks good, but I can still see her bra lines.

    • Gilmore says:

I thought I was the only one who noticed! Is she having a sour patch before she get’s on the red carpet? Is she trying to emulate January Jones cold, vanilla ice queen face? She can’t think that’s how you properly pose for a red carpet.

  10. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I don’t know why, but I can’t stand Julianne Hough. She is just SO try hard to me. And I don’t think she’s all that talented (chick said YES to a Nicholas Sparks movie, wtf?), and I just want to smack her every time I see a pic of her. She just has a whole ton of smug/i’m sexy, don’t you know it look on her face for someone who’s best known for being someone’s girlfriend.

And her brother is SO weird looking.

Just imagine if Lea Michele had ever caught anyone above her in the celeb totem pole—that’s the same way I think of Julianne.

  11. The Original G says:

Julianne’s hair and jewelry look awesome. I appreciate the fashion risk, but it looks like she just ran late out of the gynos office.

  12. EEV says:

I think Mayim wears sleeves (or at least covers her shoulders) because she’s Orthodox Jewish, no? That said, I love the color.

I like Kaley’s too, except for the peplum that’s in the same fabric as the bust. Think it would have looked better if it just went from the bust to the tulle, with no structured peplum.

    • in_theory says:

You may be right about Mayim Bialik. A little googling brings up some short-sleeved outfits, but never bare shoulders. But even following these rules she could do better than this dress, I think.

    • Sparkly says:

Yes, Mayim posts about her red-carpet dress hunting sometimes. It’s important for her to maintain a certain modest dress. I forget the term, but it is part of her religious observances (*edit: and there it is just below me.)

I think this is a fabulous color on her, but the dress didn’t need to be quite so large. She’s super down-to-earth, but with these raises they’re all getting, maybe now she can hire someone to design modestwear for her.

  13. Nells says:

Just wanted to say in defense of Mayim. Mayim follows a practice in Judaism called tzniut. which believes that both sexes should not dress in a way that attracts attention. So for women it is generally accepted for sleeves to cover the elbows and shirts to cover the collarbone, skirts to cover the knees with or without tights, and trousers not to be worn in the presence of men. So she will probably always look matronly since it doesn’t allow for much.

    • Erinn says:

I do like the color on her though, and her makeup is nice. I agree that it was a religious choice for the gown.

    • Sam says:

I disagree. I have many friends who practice modesty and they often look very good. Modest does not mean matronly. I don’t get your point, either – if tzniut is about not drawing attention to oneself, then how does a giant vivid blue dress comply? It almost certainly guarantees that the eye will be drawn to you. I don’t think modesty should be a shield from criticism. There are many modest options that would have suited her better. A bad dress is a bad dress.

      • Nells says:

Because color isn’t the point. Modesty has absolutely nothing to do with color. Tzniut means that neither men nor women should dress in a way that overly emphasizes their physical appearance. Last time I checked blue doesn’t accentuate breasts.

      • Sam says:

Nells: But if you actually Google Tzniut, it’s put forth as a concept of “modesty AND humility.” It also points out that part of tzniut is refraining from dressing in any way that calls “undue attention to oneself.” Note, that isn’t just limited to what you reveal. That same search pulls up the different disseminated rules for Orthodox dress, including those forbidding – yes – colors that would be too vivid or loud.

I should also point out that technically, the dress above would not be compliant with most tzniut interpretations, since most of them forbid exposing the collarbone, but Mayim’s is in the pic above. If she wishes to be modest, that’s cool, but perhaps you should learn the rules a bit more before commenting?

      • Nells says:

Wow, I did not realize that Googling something automatically made you an expert. I’ll be sure to let all my family members know that they’ve been wrong all this time. You can wear colors and not be in violation of tznius. Look up modern orthodox Jews. Gasp! they can allow the collarbone to be shown and colors to be worn. And Mayim considers herself a modern orthodox Jew. As with everything, it’s up to the interpretation of the congregation you attend. So maybe her congregation isn’t super strict about the rules. And yeah, you can argue all you want about tznius and modesty and the rules, but since I was specifically commenting on Mayim and not generalizing every sect of Judaism, your argument doesn’t matter.

  14. JudyK says:

I’m going to give Mayim a break…she looks lovely…just wish the dress were a straight, form-fitting sheath and then it would be a homerun.

  15. Anna says:

Kaley’s hair reminds me of Kate Gosselin’s old style. Kaley should just let it grow out and pretend this hair never happened

  16. Sam says:

I get that Mayim has modesty rules that she needs to adhere to and she’s working within those confines. But that being said, one can be modest and still look good. It’s just too much fabric, too much detail, too clunky. It’s just too much. She looks like she just ran out of a Ren Faire.

    • Lucy2 says:

I agree- if she wants to dress modestly due to her beliefs, that’s great (and kind of refreshing in comparison to some), but there’s no reason to choose that particular dress.

  17. PunkyMomma says:

Julianne Hough’s dress gives off that “toilet paper stuck to the shoe” vibe. It’s a mess.

  18. kri says:

Three hell no’s in a row. Mayim Bialik looks like she wrapped a comforter around her and ran out the damn door. Hough is unbearable and boring. It’s as if she went to a designer looking for a dress that should have been a model of an I.M Pei building. Fail, please exit to the rear of the auditorium.

    • notthatone says:

“a dress that should have been a model of an I.M.Pei building”
      slow clap… brilliant.

  19. Marianne says:

I think Kaley’s dress would have been so pretty if it didn’t have the pink applique parts.

Mayim very rarely ever looks right. But its always going to be hard for her to look fashion forward when she is so conservative due to her religious beliefs.

  20. Twinkle says:

Kaley’s dress is a prom dress on acid.

  21. Keiley says:

Is it just me or does Julianne look like she’s been messing with her face? Something looks off. She looks a little frozen, if nothing else.

  22. Alexa says:

I think all three of these women look GORGEOUS! I love Kaley’s hair and dress and her more muted makeup. She looks THE PRETTIEST I’ve ever seen her look. Mayim’s lace gown is an absolutely luscious royal blue color. And Julianna’s just got it when it comes to style.

  23. tamsin says:

I HATE dresses that look like Valentines. So corny. Kaley always looks corny. Even her Ken doll looks corny.

I’m not mad at Mayim’s dress. It has pockets; she knows what’s up.

Why won’t Hollywood take a hint and stop trying to make Julianne into a thing?

  24. Nikki L. says:

I dunno, I love Kaley’s hair. Choppy and asymmetrical is where it’s at. Long beachy waves are played out.

  25. Cheryl says:

Mayim is going to be Mayim. She cannot be stopped. All her stylists can do is try to switch the dresses at the last minute.

She wore the green fairy thing last time, this time it was the blue cruise ship, next time it’s probably going to be some kind hot pink, anti-establishment Pat Benatar/Eleanor Roosevelt thing. Because she doesn’t know what she’s doing. And she’s really drawn to bright colors. Read her blog, it sweet how much she doesn’t know what she’s doing and how terrifying her fashion thought process is.

But she always has a big smile on the red carpet, her hair and make up are done by a professional. And she never looks drunk. So she has that over Kaley every time.

  26. Pandy says:

I give Kaley props for her hair cut. The extension phase should be finished already. And I like hot pink and red as a colour combo. Mayim is constrained in what she can wear so I can’t be mean. And as a poster said above, Hwood needs to stop trying to make Julianne a thing. She’s not that interesting off of the dance floor. Dreading her return as a judge to DWTS.

  27. Lucy2 says:

Kaley’s look is actually kind of cute, but not something I would have chosen myself. At least it’s better than some of her previous attempts!
Julianne’s just looks odd on her. She just tries way too hard.
