Leonardo DiCaprio gave $100k to ALS & more superheros do the challenge

Leonardo DiCaprio has been sharing the wealth by donating $7 million to ocean conservation. Part of that money offsets his huge carbon footprint, but it’s better than nothing. Leo has also done the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. He filmed his video from Lake Athabasca where he’s “learning about the Canadian tar sands.” Us says that Leo gave $100,000 to support the ALS Association. Amazing, right? Leo’s also promoting his own foundation in the process, but still.

Several other celebs have stepped up. The late challenge entries are getting more creative or more sarcastic, depending on how you look at them. Remember how Chris Evans did it in a suit? He nominated several co-stars, including Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. I was pretty sure neither of them would do it. Right after Chris’ video posted to YouTube, Anthony shaded the challenge on Twitter. The timing of this shade could have been a coincidence. Anthony later tweeted about donating after watching Anthony Carbajal’s sobering video.

Anthony and Sebastian gave in and decided to “do” the ALS ice bucket challenge at Chicago Comic-Con. It was a weird weekend. Sebastian had already imitated Chris Evans’ penchant for grabbing co-stars’ moobs. Then things got semi-serious when Falcon and Winter Soldier accepted Cap’s challenge in this video. They mocked Chris and his “floozy” suit. Anthony sweetly nominated one of his Twitter followers. They got down to business. These two are such nerds:

Speaking of superheros, Henry Cavill did the challenge with Amy Adams from the Batman v. Superman set. Henry was wearing his real costume, and he looked fiiine. (He’s more than a footnote in Kaley Cuoco’s romantic life.)

Avenger Jeremy Renner did it in a kiddie pool (with Sam Rockwell).

Matt Damon used toilet water to illustrate the global water sanitation crisis and point people towards Water.org. Matt said Luciana thought he was gross for pouring toilet water on his head. He nominated George Clooney.

Tina Fey (nominated by Kermit the Frog) put her own twist on the challenge. She made a sizable donation.

I know everyone will give me crap…but I really like Leo…He seems like a cool guy! Yeah, he loves his young supermodels, but he is rich and single, so why not! Seems like he is always working on a charity and donating time and money to causes he believes in….Plus I think he is an excellent actor! Go ahead, bring on the hate!

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

He’s also a hypocrite. He’s so “green” that he travels in private plane, lives in huge yatch…
I have no problem that he lives like a bachelor and profit of his celebrity status

    • Josephine says:

I agree with you about his acting – he’s terrific. I loved him way back in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. He grew up very poor so I think his personal life is a bit of a reflection of that. He doesn’t court publicity much so he’s ok in my book in that respect.

    • eliza says:

You won’t get hate from me. I never understood the dislike for him. He does his own thing and makes no apologies. I am not sure what Leo should be doing in order to better appease the masses.

    • Addie says:

I agree and being a Canadian- i think it’s incredible that he is bringing exposure to the Tar Sands for the First Nations people. The Tar Sands are literally killing them and their land.

      • Pandy says:

I agree. He’s very committed to enviro causes and I love him for that. Canadian here too Addie – we are poisoning the world with our tar sands. πŸ™

    • Lucy2 says:

I think he’s a very good actor, and I do appreciate the charitable work he does on his own. He’s put in a lot of time and money over the years.
His personal life always seems a bit icky to me though, and I do wish he practiced what he preaches a bit more in terms of green living.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

He’s an EXCELLENT actor and I don’t hate him by any means.
That being said, I enjoy making fun of him for his dating habits and honestly, I feel the same way about Clooney and Depp as well.
All solid actors, none of them bad people by any stretch of the imagination, but their dating habits make me think that they’re probably pretty f*cking shallow when it comes to women.

    • pleaseicu says:

I think he’s a great actor. I just wish he’d stop with the desperate Oscar-bait films as the only projects he’ll do. I think when he finally gives up on trying for an Oscar is when he’ll finally win one. I do wish his love life wasn’t so messy but that goes for about 90% of celebrities.

And that he’d walk the talk of what he preaches about green living and carbon footprints a bit more than he does. It is hard to take that aspect of his activism seriously when his two preferred modes of transportation and relaxation are private jet and private 80+ foot yachts.

That said, I do appreciate that he actually has causes that he’s quite passionate and eager to learn about and is using his fame to bring attention to and that he actually pumps his own money into his own Foundation, in addition to whatever donations he receives, and seems quite involved with all aspects of his Foundation.

Well no hate from me, I love Leo too πŸ™‚

That article raises some good points, but just because there are worse ways to produce oil out there does not mean that the oil sands and oil companies (and their shill groups like CAPP – who Dicaprio calls out) don’t deserve some serious criticism. Just because we’re not as bad as Libya when it comes to oil doesnt make us good.

And calling out the prime minister, who could really give less than a hoot about the environment, is a nice touch too. i generally dislike Dicaprio, but i like this.

  2. don't kill me i'm french says:

It’s the one and only shower that Dicaprio took this year

  3. Soulsister says:

Here’s Jack O’Connell, Angelina Jolie’s leading main in Unbroken, on Twitter with the best response to this tedious challenge that I have seen so far.

    • Macey says:

I like that one too but my fav has to go to Pam Anderson. she went against the trendy fad and stood up for her belief about their barbaric animal testing, which from what Im reading, has produced absolutely nothing beneficial for curing or even understanding this disease.
idk, but the more Im reading about this particular chapter of ALS, the less enthusiasm I have for it. I also saw they only use 7% of the money for research, not a lot considering how much they’ve received so far.

      • Linn says:

I admit, I don’t know that much about the ALS association but other than research they also use a part of the donations to provide care services to assist people with ALS and their families.

      • Sam says:

I can agree with Pam’s point but I wish somebody else had made it, as Pam has a nice long record of hypocrisy in this field – she actively fundraised and supports the American Liver Foundation, which does research into Hepatitis C (which Pam has) even though they are a foundation that funds animal research. So Pam is basically of the “a cure for me, but not for thee” school. I cringed when she made her little spiel, since I knew her hypocrisy can be used as a battering ram by people on the other side of the coin.

      • Bubulle says:

I agree she is a hypocrite but I can’t hate on her for standing up for her beliefs, she could have take the easy road and pour water all over her bikini body to get her name out there, whether you agree with her or not at least she managed to draw attention on animals testing.

      • Sam says:

See, I disagree. She could have simply ignored it. Hypocrisy, to me, is among the worst of all moral offenses. It means that she would deny other people access to the benefits she has reaped. That is a morally indefensible position. And if you care about animals, you’d probably feel the same way. At least she’s drawing attention? Maybe, but what kind of attention? I haven’t seen any articles about animals, but I’ve seen plenty talking about the hypocrisy she shows. I don’t want a hypocrite on my side, because then my side loses the moral high ground. Pam Anderson should keep her mouth shut on these matters, for the sake of animals she claims to love.

      • Crazy Reader says:

I agree with Sam. Pamela is an attention seeker. What do you think about her “fake divorce”? She is so immature.
And Bubulle, I don’t hate her “for standing up for her beliefs” she had to do it, right? But, no, she couldn’t have take the easy road and you know why? She wants attention (and I’m not talking about animals here, I’m talking about her).

    • Linn says:

I don’t like the response. Yes, water is life and I applaud everybody who helps getting clean water to people who have a lack of it.

However, helping to find a cure to a terrible decease is life as well (average life expectancy after being diagnosed is 3 years).

So much water gets wasted for nothing, is it realy necessary to pick on those who use the water to try and help a good cause? And if he doesn’t want to do the icebucket, why not just donate and fulfill the challenge that way?

      • Soulsister says:

Shouldn’t they all just donate rather than doing this tedious challenge and so wasting water. BTW how do you know that he hasn’t already donated.

      • Linn says:

Of course it would be nice, if people would have donated millions and millions of money without the existance of the Ice-Bucket-Challenge.

But the incredible rise in donations due to the challenge shows that people are much more willing to spend money and encourage other to donate when it’s combined with such a challenge instead of just writing a check.

I don’t know that he hasn’t donated, but I don’t know that he has either. Because Jack rather posted a cynical photo instead of encourage people to donate.
I don’t like Charlie Sheen, but his critic of the Challenge was much better executed than Jack’s.

  4. bns says:

    Charitable king!

And Anthony Mackie is so hot.

  5. Kali says:

As much as I love Renner, Sam Rockwell is the best and needs to be in more things (speaking of which – is it likely that we might ever get Justin Hammer in more of the MCU TV/movies? I’m trying to read up on the wiki’s etc but I’m getting distracted by the reports of lots more Hawkeye in Avengers 2 and possibly in Cap 3).

Would anyone know if you can buy those toys Mackie and Stan are holding? They don’t look like the Funko pop ones and I need to know. For science. And for decorating my desk at work so it’s less “Soulless Concrete Prison Chic”.

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

I love Sam Rockwell! Have you watched “Moon”? It was such a captivating movie, much more better than “Gravity”.

    • Sheila says:

They were made by fan (the figures Stan nd Mackie used)

  6. Gabriella says:

Clever of Tina fey to do it in the garden lest she be accused of wasting water.

  7. Lucy2 says:

Matt Damon’s was great- he did it, but also used it as a teachable thing for water and sanitation, without being preachy, and plug the second charity at the same time.

  8. Izzy says:

Lord, when are the Closing Ceremonies for this ice bucket challenge already?

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      +1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

      Didn’t watch the video. Done.

      • mimif says:

I feel conflicted having been close to someone who died from ALS (at thirty f-cking four!), but it’s gone beyond tedious at this point. It’s flat out annoying.

  9. Leah says:

Good on him. But he could donated the money without wasting the water. Its a bit dumb that all these celebrities are wasting water when there is shortage in california. Leo being a supposed environmentalist should have thought about that

    • Bubulle says:

I see your point but to be fair this whole challenge went viral because of the cold water pouring, like it or not people are craving to see their fav getting all wet, I ve read other charities are working on other similar ways to raise money.

  10. Bshg says:

This is the main reason why I will defend him despite his major douchey-ness! Leo has always been a supporter of so many good causes, it kinda makes up for the rest.

  11. Leka says:

    KING!

    Bow Down!

  12. Crazy Reader says:

Leonardo DiCaprio is so fake. It’s all PR. He donated money? Wow. But why he didn’t post this video some days ago? This guy just wanted to promote himself.
