Miley Cyrus: ‘I’m a lot more than someone who just shakes her a– onstage’

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus covers the Fall issue of V magazine. This is the Rebel issue. I know. We’re having a shortage of rebels in music these days. Miley sort of qualifies. She’s photographed here by Karl Lagerfeld, who is doing his best impression of David LaChapelle’s work. Except that this looks like budget LaChapelle, which is saying something. The editorial was a collaboration between Miley and Karl, who lost his dang mind long before this shoot. These interview excerpts aren’t much, so we’ll follow up with several other Miley stories.

Miley on her shtick: “I know that I’m not a pop pop dumb dumb. I know that I’m not. I’m a lot more than someone who just goes and shakes her a– onstage. It’s just kind of funny to mess with people and rile them up because I’m actually the most chill person and it’s just funny to watch the world get out of their minds over things that are so irrelevant and don’t matter.”

[From V interview]

In the space of a few sentences, Miley told us how much she matters and how little she matters. That’s talent. Here are some more Miley updates.

* Miley’s starting to think about her next album, Bangerz: Vol. 2 (not the real album name). She’s hinted to the Independent that the record will be “a little psychedelic” because she’s hanging with the Flaming Lips so much. Miley killed my soul last night by Instagramming a Leonard Cohen album cover. She probably thinks she’s the first person to discover Cohen.

* Miley did an interview with Australia’s Sunday Night program. She talked about Liam Hemsworth: “I love Liam, Liam loves me.” Miley claimed to be a “strong female figure” because she tells women to “just be yourself.” Then she called Elvis Presley the original twerker: “Elvis, he wasn’t wearing the outfits I was wearing but he was coming out and he was doing like the OG twerking. Like, no one wants to admit that he was twerking, he was.

* An update on Miley’s VMA date (a homeless man named Jesse Helt) and his pending legal issues: Miley gave Jesse money to fly home and visit his mother in Oregon. Law enforcement was waiting. Jesse turned himself in on an arrest warrant and posted $2,500 bail. Jesse’s mother, Linda, says Miley offered to help pay for Jesse’s legal bills. That’s nice.

More than That? Oh We couldnt tell

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Well, there’s the teddy bears…

      • Liv says:

Haha! Good one. I’m shocked that she thinks that she can show young women how to be themselves and be a strong person. As if this persona is her! She wants to have success, she wants to earn money and because of that she tries to shock everyone. Congrats on this smart and intelligent idea, which nobody had ever before.

Okay, I’ll say this: it’s very nice of her to pay for his legal bills.

    • Size Does Matter says:

Yeah, I’m pretty sure she shakes it offstage, too.

    • Anna says:

and she can’t even twerk, she’s one of the worst twerkers I’ve seen tbh.

  2. hutter says:

I think “a lot more” is pushing it…

  3. Jayna says:

Just passing through. Nothing to see here regarding Miley as usual. LOL

  4. SpookySpooks says:

I like her. I’m not a fan of her music, but all in all, she seems like a nice person. And she knows exactly what she’s doing and it’s working for her. Out of all the ex Disney stars, she seems to be among the most put together ones – no rehabs like Selena or Demi, no rumours of diva behaviour like Ariana Grande.
So what if she instagramed Cohen’s album? Good for her for listening to great music.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I disagree that she knows what she’s doing. She thinks she’s making this big rebel statement and “shaking everybody up,” but she’s actually turning herself into a gimmick and boring everybody to tears. As soon as she runs out of ideas for the next big shocker, she’ll be out of the news and off the radar. I don’t see her as having a long time career at all.

      • SpookySpooks says:

I don’t know if she’ll have a long career or the schock tactic it will work for her in the long run, but I think she knows what she’s doing NOW. The horrible twerking on last year’s VMAs, the smoking and partying – it’s all marketing and not her actually going off the rails, that is what I meant.

I think she has a nice voice, maybe not the biggest range but the colour of her voice is nice, the exact opposite of Ariana Grande. And some of her songs are good. We’ll see, maybe she’ll make it.

      • hutter says:

I think you’re both partially right. I think she knows what she’s doing (her main goal was to kill of Hannah Montana forever) but I agree that it will get boring really quickly and she won’t have an interesting enough (or any) shtick to sell her next record. Unless of course that album is going to blow everybody away with the quality of the actual music. The chances of which are slim.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh, ok, Spooky, I misunderstood you. I get it now.

  5. truthSF says:

You could’ve fooled us Miley “horribletwerker” Cyrus.

  6. DanaG says:

It’s why she is half naked again cause she is so much more. A real artist doesn’t need to be naked to promote their music etc. Miley really better be saving her 15 minutes is almost up maybe her and Justin Beiber can open a burger joint together there careers are going the same way. As for being a role model actually Miley most people I know use her as a DON’T not a be like Miley Cyrus.

    • SpookySpooks says:

Apart from Adele, which mainstream female pop singer hasn’t been almost naked on stage or in magazines?

      • Tapioca says:

Well that’s the (laughable) point, isn’t it? How can one be a “rebel” when one is doing EXACTLY the same as everyone else?

      • Chris says:

Yup, this is my beef with Madonna. The industry took her sexualised antics and ran wild….whatever may be the case about her good intentions, a clear signal was given that only through selling sex could an artist prosper. Sinead O’C was spot on, in my opinion.

      • hutter says:

        Taylor Swift.

      • SpookySpooks says:

Yeah, but Taylor still identifies with the country crowd, and they tend to be much more covered up.

      • decorative item says:

        Cindy Lauper

      • hutter says:

She may identify as country (still?) but she’s clearly been mainstream for a couple of years now.

      • MonicaQ says:

Even country fans have disowned Taylor Swift, especially after “I Knew You Were Trouble”. She’s totally pop.

      • lehcar says:

Lana Del Ray, Lykke Li, Sia, Emeli Sande, Lorde…

  7. Jes1632 says:

Those Adidas boots(?) in the last pic are something. Idk if I want to steal or burn them

  8. Ari says:

lol,why am I not surprised she mentioned the most famous person appropriating black music? Of course Elvis invented twerking * rolla eyes*

    • HH says:

      Exactly!

And I love that she’s completely done with that “phase” of her life/music, which is what everyone predicted. Do you know why no one bought into your ratchet act, Miley? We knew it would be over by the next album (at the latest).

  9. Chris says:

I forgive Karl a lot of misdemeanors owing to his love for Choupette, but blimey he should discriminate between ‘street’ and ‘downright common-as-muck’.
If we need Miley’s directions in our struggle, the battle’s already lost!

  10. Ray says:

Miley instagramming Leonard Cohen made my eyes roll SO far into the back of my skull.

  11. OrangeBlohan says:

Her schtick has been done before. Nothing special about what she does. It would be special if she woke up one day and realized that she doesn’t have to take off her clothes or act over sexualized to sing.

  12. Adrien says:

I went to one of her gigs 3 years ago and I had a blast (not even a fan). I think her star has greatly diminished that time, before she cut her hair and reinvented herself as twerking Miley but she worked the stage like a pro. She was nice to fans too.

  13. HoneyBea says:

If you have to tell people how deep you are, then you probably are not very deep at all. The fuzzy blue swimsuit looks like the blue monster from monsters inc

  14. Natasha says:

Didn’t Elvis steal his moves too?

  15. Chris says:

The rebel edition? Fashionable nonconformity is an oxymoron.

  16. aquarius64 says:

So Miley’s more than a woman that shakes her [backside] on stage…

If that were true the Dominican Republic would not have banned her from performing. In fact, her shock stage act, tweets and Instagrams are getting more press than her music. Miley sold an image of a sexually aggressive pot user, and now that image is indelible in people’s minds.

  17. Artemis says:

She’s just like Madonna, creating new styles and personas each album era. With Madonna it was new though while you expect it from Miley.

I was always (still am) on Miley’s side when it comes to the break-up. People were horrible about her relationship because she didn’t look ‘hot enough’ for Liam. The sexism was strong in that period. BUT come on girl, it was obvious HE wanted out. He looked sour when going out with her after how long being apart? He cheated on her (the break-up report came after his ‘cheating’ pictures) and his team and family even pitched in to bash her, Elsa P. was the only one who was nice about her. She didn’t love herself or free herself because she clung to him until he forced her to acknowledge it was over. Who knows how she is next time with a lover but if she displays the same pattern, then I don’t think she knows who she claims she is. Not in the relationship area.

I don’t think she’s dumb but likes most child stars, I don’t think she’s very smart either. She grew up isolated and even know her life seems quite boring.

    • St says:

It was more like Liam was dating her when she was nice and fun girl . And then she turned to this gross half naked clown. And she wasn’t the person he started dating anymore.

It’s like you would date some nice and fun guy . And then he will shave his head, do tattooes, start hang out with bikers or will join some gang and be all street and hangs with bros and gang members in your home. You know he would not be the same fun guy you were dating and going to movies on fridays or walking his dog on the beach anymore.

      • Artemis says:

Disagree. She always maintained that she was ‘this’ girl and I believe her (remember her risqué pictures? Her penis birthday cake during her Liam days? Her Bob Marley birthday cake? Her attempt to break out with Can’t Be Tamed? Her salvia scandal?). Before 2013 her team tried to dismiss the fact that she was a weed smoker even though there was videographic evidence. Liam was present during that time. He knew.

The only thing that changed was the hair. Her party style seemed pretty similar to her style now and she’s still a stoner.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Who cares? They didn’t suit each other, obviously, it’s best they broke up. marriage was a terrible idea for them to begin with, Miley acts like a twelve year old, she’s not ready to settle down.

  18. putchka says:

“I know that I’m not a pop pop dumb dumb. I know that I’m not. I’m a lot more than someone who just goes and shakes her a– onstage.” —- PROVE IT, LITTLE GIRL!!!

  19. Happyhat says:

“But you don’t really care for music, do you?”

    or

“And all the lousy little poets coming round
Trying to sound like Charlie Manson
    Yeah the white man dancing”

    or

    “The Maestro says it’s Mozart
but it sounds like bubble gum”

    Dear god…..it all fits!!!!!!!

  20. db says:

I just find her so tryhard.

  21. St says:

Well everyone said this to Miley last year after VMA – she thought that she will play this crazy stunt for publicity, popularity and album sales. That she will behave as gross as possibly during promotion of the album and singles just to be in the press all the time. And then few months later she will finish promotion and will say that it was all a joke and that she is serious singer and person.

But the thing is that people will never look at her the same again. It will never go away and people will always look at her like on “that idiot from VMA and Wrecking Ball video”. No one will respect her ever again. It has to be years now when she will behave good for people to take her serious. For now people think that she is dump idiot and joke. No matter how much she will claim otherwise.

How many years it took for Madonna to be respected performer? Was it after Frozen video was released?

    • Artemis says:

Nah, with Like A Prayer she had quite a serious image with her brown hair and singing about her mother’s death, her father’s emotional absence and her shitty marriage to Penn. Her past was quite dark and sad, something that Cyrus doesn’t have that with her privileged upbringing. Madonna ruined that perfect era by her sex overexposure mid early to mid-90s.

Promoting the homeless might take her into the ‘humanitarian’ area. She can sing about social issues like Janet and Madonna et al. I suppose but I’m not sure how that will fit in a psychedelic album. I’m curious to see what she’s going to do next!

      • Bob Loblaw says:

You assume she has Madonna’s talent for re-invention. So far Miley has ruined her Disney image and established her reputation as a fun-time party girl. We’ll see if she can shake her current image but I think she has turned herself into a party clown and there’s no going back. Madonna took herself seriously as a provocateur; Miley has no idea what she’s doing, she just wants to shock. Sad thing is nobody is that shocked, her “bad girl” behavior is just derivative, stupid and self-serving. Rebel? What a joke.

  22. Sea Dragon says:

“I know that I’m not a pop pop dumb dumb.” Intelligence personified. I don’t know how she does it.

  23. Lis says:

She doesn’t just shake her ass, she has some kind of disorder that causes her tongue to hang out of her face so most photos of her look like s**t. She also seems to have a problem with the filter between her brain and mouth. She is young tho … maybe she will grow up some day.

  24. 237 says:

How about stop taking drugs. Whenever I hear someone talk high on the bad shit, my ears just shut.
Mrs. Cyrus has nothing to say, unless she snorted a mountain of #whateverisavailable, so her opinion doesnt really matter. At least not to me

  25. Nicolette says:

No you sorry delusional chipmunk, there isn’t any more to you. Now scurry on back to the nut house.

  26. Charlotte says:

I dislike the suggest placement of the ‘V’ over her crotch. Also by using the phrase “pop pop dumb dumb” you are only reinforcing the fact that that is what you are. Use your words Miley!

  27. SuperStef says:

She is just ridiculous. Her talent has been muddied by her skanky performances. The fact that she promotes hard drugs to her teen fans sickens me.

She has talent, that’s without a doubt, but her ridiculous attention-seeking antics make me want to dismiss her as a trick and say… “Next!”

  28. Micah says:

    Hannah Montana dressed as Beaver.

  29. Yoon says:

    Orly?
Because I’m pretty sure all she does is shake her ass and run her mouth. I’m done with this girl.

Want her to stop popping up and wasting everyones time. It disgusts me that she still calls herself a role model. It’s gross.

  30. Breezy says:

She’s pretty yawn for me. I don’t think she’s much more than a cry for attention at this point. You could argue that’s one method of “the game” but her way of doing it turns me off (not the sex appeal…or attempt) I have a bigger issue with the cultural appropriation and to be honest, every time someone has a video of her from a performance she’s always yammering with fans about her ex while sitting on stage. I really wonder if a lot of this isn’t more of a public tantrum. I wouldn’t expect anything better since I know she’s a child star and probably has next to zero experience with relationships that don’t revolve around her fame, but yeah.

    Personally, snooze fest.
