Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie are doing Krav Maga to stay in shape in Malta

From what (little) I know of Angelina Jolie’s By the Sea script, it’s just a flat-out drama. Like, it’s dialogue heavy and it’s just some artsy, sexy stuff that can be filmed pretty quickly and with very little CGI. Still, the British gossips would have us believe that Angelina and Brad Pitt are “in training” for the film. Is it FOR the film or are they merely doing a joint couple-activity for fun? I don’t know. But sources say they’re taking Krav Maga lessons.

They met on the set of high octane flick Mr & Mrs Smith, where they played married secret assassins. And the lives of newlywed couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are now imitating their art as they have taken up training in a form of military-style unarmed combat, together.

The couple – who married in France last month – have been practicing a form of Israeli self defence known as Krav Maga to help them prepare for their upcoming movie By The Sea. Brad, 50, has only recently adopted the discipline, which the couple now practise several days a week, while wife Angelina started learning self defence to train for her Tomb Raider role in 2001.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: ‘Angelina previously learnt Krav Maga when she was doing Tomb Raider and loved it.’

The A-list acting couple, who have six children together, Maddox, 13, Pax, 11, nine-year-old Zahara, eight-year-old Shiloh and six-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne are impressed with the fitness properties of the combat classes, which are thought to burn hundreds of calories each time. Fight Club actor Brad is believed to have lost more than 10 pounds after participating in the intense military-style exercise classes for just three weeks and is even letting his kids join in the fun.

‘The whole family are learning the moves,’ the source continued. ‘Even the little ones are doing modified kids’ moves but Brad has been doing it for 45 minutes a day and has dramatically lost weight and beefed up his muscles for the film.’

[From The Daily Mail]

See, I think they’re just saying the Krav Maga lessons are for fun, or for a workout, not that Krav Maga will be used in the film. I used to be really interested in Krav Maga because it seemed like a smart, efficient self-defense system that borrowed some good ideas from other methods. But I’ve read some articles about how Krav Maga isn’t all that and all the cool kids do Muay Thai or Taekwondo because those are the better systems overall. I’ve also heard (but never verified) that Krav Maga shouldn’t be a “fun class” for kids, that it’s too dangerous. But then every child in my town started taking Krav Maga classes, so I don’t know. But if the Jolie-Pitt children really are taking Krav Maga… watch out. Looks like there really IS a Jolie-Pitt Child Army.

    Love them together. Amazing couple.

  2. Abbott says:

    They’re seriously building an army.

  3. lisa2 says:

I love the pictures you used in the story.. they look great together
    ****************
I laugh at all the “sources” that have all this information NOW but had nothing before. I remember seeing the pictures of them landing in France for the wedding and the story was they were going to be in France for the Summer End vacationing.. Yeah. So where were the sources then.

this is a story taken from bits and pieces of old info. I think Angie talked about using this fighting style for SALT.. that was a few years ago. I don’t know what exercise routine Brad does. Obviously he works out, but he is not usually seen going to or coming out of gyms. So I guess he works out at home.

I’m sure there will be many of these stories as they film this movie and they start promoting their upcoming projects. I’m also sure that there will be some sensationalized stories in the future too. So get ready. It is going to be interesting.

  4. Toot says:

This sounds far fetched, tabs know nothing about them as we’ve witnessed recently but, it would be cool.

    • Soulsister says:

Totally agree. The tabloids know absolutely nothing about what goes on with these two.

The whole wedding situation, where the tabs didn’t realize that the wedding had taken place and then E-online going on to publish a bogus report about it, totally exposed just how full of BS the tabs truly are.

    • doofus says:

      yeah, I agree with you.

at this point, based on what we’ve seen of their ability to keep things secret, I will not believe anything about this couple/family unless it comes from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

  5. Aussie girl says:

Am I the only one that has never head of Krav Maga before..?

  6. Soulsister says:

I am so excited and very intrigued about By The Sea. It also shows Angie’s influence in the industry that she has managed to attract people such as Melanie Laurent, Christian Berger (who was DP for the Palme D’or winning film The White Rose) and Adruitha Lee who won an Oscar for her make-up work on The Dallas Buyer’s Club, to this project.

    • Toot says:

I think Lee is friends with Angelina, because when she was walking up to get her Oscar she hugged Angelina.

  7. TheRealMaya says:

How many times have Brad and Angelina showed the media, fans and haters that they know nothing about them unless they themselves says it?

I won’t believe anything the media is going to say about this movie. Only thing I know is what Angelina said – that’s is an intense, talent driven drama.

And also – as someone else mentioned Angelina is without a doubt the queen of Hollywood and not only gets to work with talented Oscar nominated/winning people but also has the same talent herself to be on the same level of talent as them.

She got 11 Oscar nominated Roger Deakins, Coen brothers and multi award winning music composer for Unbroken.

Now she has another Oscar winning makeup artist for her new movie.

More importantly Angelina and Brad are actually very good friends with these amazing talented people who also likes to work with the JPs.

The not name dropping of their famous and influential friends for publicity is one of the reasons I love this couple.

    • lisa2 says:

      Yes that is so true.

they both work with the BEST in the business. That speaks a lot about them as influential in Hollywood, and how these people want to work with them as well.

They are both extremely powerful in this business. I watched that TV piece on them.. Brangelina: Mr and Mrs Hollywood and while I don’t agree with all the assertions, I do agree that they are a rare occurrence in this business.. And a force on every level. There really is not another Hollywood couple on their level that I can name off the top.

  8. Artimis says:

Lol, they can never just power walk, can they? It has to be something uber-pretentious. As for the script, it sounds poor, but then again they’re both wildly overrated as actors anyway, especially him (watch Interview with a Vampire again and tell me otherwise :D)

    • lisa2 says:

Yeah because IWAV is the only film he as made.

but I’m sure you will still be spending your coin to see their movies.

    • Soulsister says:

Have watched IWAV and agree with you on that but have also watched Snatch, Seven, Fight Club, Jesse James, Benjamin Button and Tree of Life and have to totally disagree with you, about him being overrated, after seeing his performances in those films.

And in regards to the script, I’m really surprised to find out that you have actually read it.

    • doofus says:

agree on the acting. I find Jolie to be ok…not terrible, and not great, just OK. The only thing I saw her in where I thought she was great was “Girl, Interrupted”. and we know how that turned out, Oscar and all…

I think Pitt is hit or miss with his roles. sometimes I find him to be “meh” and other times I think he’s great. IWAV was definitely meh, but Inglorious Basterds was pretty good. as was Fight Club and 12 Monkeys.

      • Chris2 says:

I was utterly gobsmacked, not long ago and very behind the times, by his performance in ‘Snatch’.
How the hell he mastered that secretive, swallowed Traveller diction is beyond me. He shot up in my book after that, I loved his character, and he seemed admirably ‘loose’ and confident in the portrayal. Wildy sexy too, natch.

      • doofus says:

I haven’t seen Snatch, though I have heard he’s quite good in that.

I think he does best when he’s in “character actor” mode, and not “leading man” mode…if that makes sense.

    • maddelina says:

Well she started out with a bang and then her career slowly fizzled out and he wasn’t doing much with his (Ocean 12) until they got together and sold their private life to the mags. People loved the gossip and that’s how they got where they are today. It’s certainly not their acting ability although Pitt has done some decent work from time to time, depends on the cast. Just my take (runs like hell)

      • Candy Love says:

How did her career slowly fizzled out When she decided to do less work ? Jennifer Lawrence along with many other actresses have said they’ve only gotten roles because Angelina turned them down. What do you mean he wasn’t doing much his (Ocean 12)?

You don’t like them fine but let’s not lie .

      • maddelina says:

        Candy Love,

Don’t assume I don’t like them but their careers prior to hooking up were not exactly hot as they are now. IMO she is not a great actress. Pitt has been hit and miss for me. Angie’s career wasn’t going anywhere except the tank. Other than Tomb Raider she wasn’t doing much.

      • Candy Love says:

“Her career wasn’t going anywhere except the tank” that is a lie and yes she was doing thing other then Tomb Raider .

      • Meandyou says:

You are right in that between 2001-2005 when they made MAMS she was in a string of floppers, Beyond Borders, Life or something like it, that movie with Ethan Hawke. MAMS and the subsequent relationship with BP raised her profile tremendously as it did for J. aniston and G. Paltrow during their time.

However his career never cooled off. Even when he wasn’t doing Oscar material movies he was in blockbusters. When he started shooting MAMS he had just finished Troy. That piece of crap made half bil worlwide. The Ocean movies were very successful and his character in particular mega cool. Pitt was never not A list.

I quite like both of them, separately and together, but the truth is the truth.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I actually looked it up, the last time this discussion came about (about Angelina’s career)—no matter how crappy her films may have seemed in the 2001-05 era, with the exception of two or three films, they always made back their budgets, and then some, and most of them made twice as much.

And if her films were doing so badly, why did they pay her 20 million for MAMS? That was before she and Brad got together.

      • Gina says:

Nope. I had a quick look at box office mojo. The only movies that made back their budget between 2001-2005 were Shark Tale (animated) and the Lara Croft movie (maybe). The gross profit does not include what the cinemas, distributors, etc take, and the budget doesn’t usually include marketing, etc. I believe a movie usually has to make back 2.5 x it’s budget to make a profit.

Alexander, Taking Lives, Beyond Borders, Original Sin, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, all of these lost money.

And please provide a like that shows that she was paid 20mil for MAMS. I heard it was between 7-10.

    • Bridget says:

No one will ever get Hollywood thin power walking. Ever. It simply doesn’t get your heart rate up enough and it doesn’t build muscle.

  9. Chris2 says:

Have you ever wondered about the way journalists mention children? *Always* a mix of numerals and words: “Tom, 13; Dick; 11; Mary,7; and Obadiah, five.” Why so because?

    • ataylor says:

Because most journalists, reporters & publicists follow AP style. In fact, we practically have to memorize the stylebook in college.

Some rules on numbers: Numerals must be used in numbers higher than ten. Any number below must be written out. Spell out numbers that begin a sentence unless it begins with a year. Spell out casual expressions: “A picture is worth a thousand words, but a really good one is worth a thousand dollars.”

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        Interesting.

      • Chris2 says:

        ATaylor
That’s most interesting, thanks a lot! I’d never have guessed it was a guideline, and thought it just an annoying bit of nonsense that was widely copied. (Meself, I’d use numerals only for dates/years I think, spelling everything else.)

      • Twinkle says:

My English teacher always taught that 5 and below is spelled out and above is the Arabic numeral. Hmmm.

  10. Babou says:

Can you bloggers please stop using acronyms? I am not a native English-speaker and I have no clue what CGI is??? Is it that time-consuming to write the whole words anymore?

    • The Original G says:

      Computer generated imagery.

    • Meandyou says:

Google? Why should they subvert the way they write to your liking? Or, you can ask nicely without yelling.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I often have to Google “what does CGI mean?” It only takes 30 seconds.

    • Ennie says:

CGI is not just used by bloggers, it is a movie industry term for that type of technology. I am not a native speaker either, but one can easily google it, and if you cannot get the answer, then you can ask… nicely.,
      hahaha oops yes, Meandyou!

    • Brittney B says:

The only time I’ve seen “consumer-generated imagery” spelled out like that is in a glossary entry about CGI, or an explanation of what the acronym means.

Everyone uses the term, not just bloggers, and I wouldn’t be surprised if at least 25% of them couldn’t tell you what it actually means. Friends exchange opinions on CGI while walking out of movie theaters, directors give interviews and film specials about their CGI tricks, and reviews often refer to CGI and whether it’s natural or overdone.

  11. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’ve always wanted to take a self-defense class, just to have some “practice” so I hopefully wouldn’t freeze in a real situation. Any suggestions?

    • Leigh says:

I’m 5’4″ and 100 lbs, and I always felt scared. I took Krav Maga and I LOVED it. It is definitely a work out, but at the end I felt really powerful. You can also search for an IMPACT class in your area. (I couldn’t find a national page for IMPACT, just search it with your city’s name and the classes will come up.)

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Thank you, Leigh. That was very helpful and generous if you.

      • Leigh says:

No problem! I took a self- defense class in college, and it was… good… but it was all theory and slow-motion movement. I wanted to KNOW and FEEL that I had strength. With Krav Maga you punch, elbow, knee and kick these big punching pads. And IMPACT has the actual attacker in the padded suit.
That’s what I was looking for!! I’m glad to pass on the info to others. 🙂

      • Bridget says:

Martial arts are great (I’ve boxed for years) but definitely supplement with an actual self defense class. What you’d use in an attack and what you’d use in a fight are a little different, and self defense classes should have great info for keeping yourself safe.

      • Zvonk says:

I’ve done Taekwondo and Krav Maga. Taekwondo is great for flexibility and strength, and the sparring training would come in handy in a prolonged fight. There are rules to Taekwondo sparring, that you unconsciously follow after a while. Without thinking, you avoid sensitive areas like the groin. Krav Maga on the other hand is about disabling your attacker as quickly and effectively as possible. Attacking the groin and neck is encouraged. Escaping the situation as quickly as possible is the main goal, so inflicting excruciating pain and damage quickly, and escaping is what you’re trained to do. With most martial arts, the sparring exercises unconsciously train you to stay with you opponent and keep fighting. I’d recommend Krav Maga to anyone. It’s a fantastic workout, and boosts your confidence to defend yourself at a time of need.

If I were in your shoes, rather than the lazy so-and-so I am, I would ask a cop. I realise in the States they have other means at their disposal, but I bet all police have unarmed tactics training too. (High kicks probably feature….sure do in novels!)
(The freeze thing is so terrible. Some b’stard broke into my old flat years ago and I sat on the bed, paralysed and unable to head for the other exit til almost too late. Ugh.)

  12. phlyfiremama says:

Those kids DO need to know how to defend themsleves. They are high profile targets for kidnappers who might demand ransoms, and for nutcases looking for fame. All the skills they can get can only help them later, as they fight for action roles in Hollywood blockbusters.
(*sarcasm font for that last sentence)

  13. Pam says:

KRAV MAGNA utilizes giant bouncing BALLS for stability I think

  14. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Um, I don’t know if either of them are interested in martial arts. I know that Angelina did it when she was filming Tomb Raider, for training, but…..it’d be interesting to see what she’s into now that she’s a mom with a ton of kids.

And is it bad that the first thing I thought of when I heard ‘Brad, Angelina, and ‘stay in shape” was–that’s what sex is for! Seriously. I only thought of that because of this really old Cameron Diaz interview for Cosmo or whatever, and she said that her favorite way to burn off calories was sex.

But I can’t wait for this movie to come out. It’s rather different from what they’ve both been doing for the past few years–more commercial stuff–and so I hope they pull it off. I like that Angelina tries new things, and doesn’t go all Franco on us. I like that she’s nervous about the film, about her writing, about her acting……I think she knows that she’s no Meryl Streep, no Viola Davis, but tries to challenge herself.

I mostly love her acting because no matter what she’s in, she always stands out, and she’s always (generally) the best thing about the movie–even if the movie is shitty.

  15. Selina says:

Angie might disappear if she loses any more weight. Although, yes, everyone should work out regularly.
