Married with Children cast reunites as Katey Sagal gets a star on the Walk of Fame

Katey Sagal at her Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony
Katey Sagal of Sons of Anarchy got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday. On hand to help her accept the award were her former Married… With Children co-stars, Christina Applegate, Ed O’Neill and David Faustino. I don’t have a lot of nostalgia for that show because it was so dirty I wasn’t supposed to watch it. I still did, of course, especially as I got older. Wiki says that it aired from 1987 to 1997, which was a whopping 11 seasons. I didn’t remember how long it ran, that’s crazy.

US Magazine has details of the introduction speeches that Katey’s Married co-stars gave on her behalf. You can see the video of that on the website for The Walk of Fame. Ed O’Neil comes in at around 11:30 and Christina Applegate begins at 12:40. She makes a self deprecating joke about how Katey is in better shape than she is and then she says that Katey was like a mom to her on set. David Faustino also called her his “second mamma” and “an inspiration.” Here’s more:

The Bundys are back together! Katey Sagal was awarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Sept. 9, and was celebrated by familiar faces — her Married With Children costars!

Seventeen years after the final episode of the sitcom aired, Sagal, 60, posed for a photo with former costars Christina Applegate, Ed O’Neill and David Faustino. O’Neill played her on-screen husband Al, while Applegate and Faustino played their kids Kelly and Bud.

In a video posted on the Walk of Fame website, Applegate joked, “I met Katey when I was 15-years-old, so it’s been about 10 years since we met…I’ll never forget the day that I met her. I walked into the rehearsal hall for Married with Children and she was sitting there wearing a white T-shirt and jeans and I’ve never seen anyone look that good in a white T-shirt and jeans in my entire life.”

“The fact that your body is better now than it was then makes me sick,” the Anchorman actress went on to joke. “Because I’m wearing a Fitbit trying to get rid of all my baby weight!”

Sagal, who was nominated for an Emmy four times for her portrayal of whiny housewife Peg Bundy, was also celebrated by current Sons of Anarchy costar and hunk Charlie Hunnam.

[From US Magazine]

I had the pleasure of hearing Katey’s Fresh Air interview last year. She’s a very interesting, introspective lady and she’s had an amazing life so far. Her dad was a writer and director for television and she worked as a backup singer for Bob Dylan when she was just 19. I had no idea she could sing! It was fascinating to get to know her a little because she so convincingly plays characters that it’s hard to see beyond that. She’s incredible as Gemma on SOA and it’s a shame she’s only won a Golden Globe for that role, she hasn’t even been nominated for an Emmy. I hope that changes this year.

I haven’t seen the season premiere of Sons of Anarchy yet and hope to watch it when I’m done working today, so no spoilers please! I’m most interested in seeing how Gemma handles the mess she’s gotten herself into.

Here are some gratuitous photos of Charlie Hunnam, with more in the gallery. Where was Ron Perlman?!

how come katy looks the same age as cristina??? she used to play her mom!!!

  2. Ari says:

She actually sings a few songs on SoA – she is quite good. So glad for her – finally!

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

She’s a really talented actress. It’s kind of hard to believe when you think of the Peg Bundy character, but it really is a testament to her acting ability that she was able to do comedic and dramatic acting equally well.

      • Sooloo says:

I think the same about Bryan Cranston – such a goofball dad on “Malcolm in the Middle” that I was in total shock to watch the transformation into such a bad, hard Walter White.

    • doofus says:

I believe she also has an album out…heard a bit when she appeared on a NY radio station to promote it, and I was impressed.

I think she’s awesome and is AMAZING as Gemma.

    • Squiggles says:

She sang quite a bit on Futurama as well. She played Leela.

      • Ange says:

Remember the Futurama cross over episode with Married With Children where Leela dates that other cyclops? Oh my god that episode cracks me up still.

    • pwal says:

I loved it when she sang Moon River on that MWC episode when they used an inheritance to go out to a fancy restaurant. Of course, Al left his wallet at home and sent Bud and Kelly to retrieve it and they took the money and went to the Tears and Vomit concert.

  3. TheOriginalKitten says:

I think Katey’s such a handsome woman, if that makes any sense. There’s just something so regal about her.

Loved MWC, even though I distinctly recall feeling uncomfortable with some of the sexist humor on that show, it still managed to consistently make me laugh my ass off.

Christina looks a bit ‘Toxy no?

    • mimif says:

      Totally ‘toxy.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I agree, she does have a regal air about her.

I loved MWC, too, but seeing it at such a young age probably contributed to my issues growing up, especially the idea that breast size = value as a woman. But, that was the 80s/90s mindset. I did love that show, though! Glad to see so many of the cast members are still working !

  4. Pager90 says:

Oh my gawwwd, CHARLIE HUNNAM two articles in two days! LOVE HIM!

    Congrats to Katey Sagal.

  5. bettyrose says:

Katay Sagal rules! Where’s her husband? You know, the one who’s written nearly every character off SoA until Gemma’ s the only one left? ; )

  6. mimif says:

Katy looks amazing. Always loved her, and yeah she can totally belt the tunes, too. Congrats!

    • Aussie girl says:

Conrats to Katy. She is a talented actor how has been in the biz for a long time. She brings so much to the character of Gemma that I find it hard to separate the two.

  7. Courtney says:

Awww 🙂 That warms my cold, black heart. Glad they’re all still friendly and they seem like good people.

  8. Abbicci says:

She also worked with Bette Midler. She has a great singing voice.

Im’, surprised she’s 60. She looks fantastic and so talented.

Good for her for getting her star.

  9. Tiffany27 says:

Also, she’s 60! She looks AMAZING!

  10. L. says:

She is amazing! Great Job playing on SOA and we all loved Married with Children!

  11. TheCountess says:

Katey was also a back-up singer to Bette Midler.

    She looks amazing.

  12. M.A.F. says:

I had no idea she was nominated four times for Married w/Children. I too used to watch that show because I was told not to. It got a little weird towards the end.

I must say, she gets more beautiful as she gets older.

    • FingerBinger says:

Married with Children was terrible at the end. It wasn’t even funny.

      • starrywonder says:

Yep. I loved the first couple of seasons of that show and my dad and mom allowed us all to watch it as a family but yeah the last four seasons where just horrible. Probably the funniest seasons were when Marcy was still with Steve.

      • Tiffany :) says:

You gotta admit…Marcy Darcy was a fantastic new name for her!

  13. bettyrose says:

MwC was a brilliant precursor to the shows we now have featuring alternative family structures. When MwC premiered, nearly every sitcom featured a rich white suburban nuclear family. Even the groundbreaking Cosby show was about a wealthy well-adjusted nuclear family. Very little for kids from dysfunctional families to relate to.

    • Tiffany :) says:

So true. I think it only made it to the air because Fox was such a tiny little channel at the time, they could afford to take the risk.

  14. TX says:

I love her! She’s wonderful as Gemma and I also saw her sing at Stagecoach music festival and she was great! Well deserved star :)!

  15. blue marie says:

How sweet, I still watch reruns. If you haven’t seen her sing, you should, she’s good.

  16. Talie says:

Her interviews with Howard Stern on youtube are amazing — she used to sing backup for Bob Dylan! Amazing life she’s had.

  17. apsutter says:

I love her…such a classy woman. Whenever she gives interviews I always try and give them a listen because she’s very interesting and always as something to say. Her nerdist episode was great.

  18. laura says:

I wonder why kaley cuoco wasn’t there? She was her mom on 8 simple rules. I always thought they were close after john Ritter died.

  19. Nicolette says:

She looks great, and I love seeing The Bundy’s together again. Wonder if they would ever consider a reunion show. Loved her as Peggy she really brought that character to life. It’s incredible to think that Married With Children was one of the first shows on the fledgling Fox network along with Tracey Ullman. I remember the night the channel took off and they kept repeating the couple of shows they had all evening, seems like ages ago. The storyline of Peggy being pregnant sticks out in my memory, Katey really was pregnant and sadly lost the baby.

Glad to see her receive this honor, she deserves it.

    • Froggy says:

I would so watch a MWC reunion show!

    • pwal says:

I seem to remember that Katey was always disappointed that Fox didn’t allow MWC to have a series finale. And yet, I can’t see them doing a reunion. Mind you, Katey hung in there with Futurerama’s many resurrections, so who knows.

  20. pwal says:

The interview you described sounds a lot like the Fresh Air/Terry Gross interview, which I must say was pretty good.

And I’m saying this as not a dig, but I don’t doubt that Katey has had some plastic surgery, especially during the Married with Children days. Just look at the first season Peg versus the later seasons Peg. Makeup, hair color and padding couldn’t make that big of a difference. To me, I found it increasingly funny that Al would reject Peg, since she got prettier and sexier with each passing year.

    • MaiGirl says:

Yeah, I like her a lot, and her singing voice is great, but she has DEFINITELY had some work done on her face and body. She looks good, and it isn’t super obvious, but you can tell if you have seen her over the years, as I have.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Yes, she certainly had her chest done. She still a beautiful woman regardless. At least she didn’t go overboard.

  21. Lilian says:

Congrats to Katey, she is such an awesome actress and a fantastic singer, and thanks for the Charlie pics :p

  22. claire says:

Does anyone remember that 80s TV show Double Trouble, about the twins? I was so surprised to find out those were her younger sisters!

    • pwal says:

I remember Double Trouble. Jean and Liz Sagal.

During the Peg pregnancy storyline (of course, before Katey miscarried), I pictured them showing up in a flash forward dream sequence as Al and Peg’s babies. I pictured Katey as an older Peg (still rocking the red hair, makeup and tight clothes) and Jean and Liz made up like Peg, sitting on the couch, eating bon-bons and watching TV, all three doing that fidgety leg cross thing that Peg used to do.

    • holly hobby says:

Yup those are her sisters. She came from a show business family all right.

  23. Mrs. Darcy says:

I’ve never seen Sons of Anarchy but always liked Katy on Married With Children despite the show being otherwise awful. She looks amazing in that dress.

  24. Meandyou says:

I found out that she sings when I watched SOA. I love her voice. So sweet and tender, nothing like the character she plays on the show. She’s so good that I hate and love Gemma with a passion. I skipped on season 6 but found out what she did and am really curious to see if Kurt Sutter will kill off her character in the end. Speaking of, where is Lurt Sutter? Out of all the characters in SOA his may have been the craziest. He always plays paychopaths in his shows. Anyone remember the Hungarian psycho in The Shield?

Anyway congrats to Katey. Very much deserved. Now I am going to check some of her interviews.

  25. notlistening says:

It´s super cute that they all came.

  26. Mixtape says:

Wow–I can’t believe that show was on almost 30 years ago! These four look older than they did back then, but not that much older, and it’s great that they are all still active in the business.

  27. Justaposter says:

I think it speaks volumes about a person that people she worked with years and years ago, come to comes to something as important as this show up, and do so happily.

  28. Debutante says:

Married with Children wsd so ahead of its time,so many people were outraged by it, but I loved it. Peggy was great, but AL was the one who made that show. Look at reruns of mwc and watch ed o neill. He is just hilarious with great comedic timing. I still watch the reruns if I can’t sleep at 3 or 4 a.m.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I feel like the whole cast was really comically gifted. Christina often gets overlooked for her talent, I think it is easy to dismiss people playing “dumb” roles, but her timing was impeccable. It was a great ensemble, but yes, Ed O’Neill is incredibly talented.

  29. Al says:

Lovely woman. Just lovely. Such a badass on SOA.

And charlie delivers as usual, serving his golden god charm right and left. Him with his perpetually way too long pants and perfect teeth…
