Taylor Swift & Katy Perry’s rift is all about the divided loyalties of dancers

It’s kind of amazing that we’ve managed to get three days of coverage out of this Taylor Swift-Katy Perry nonsense. It just goes to show, girl-on-girl hate-crimes are still one of the most potent sources of gossip. To recap, Taylor Swift revealed, in her new Rolling Stone interview, that she wrote a song about a Mean Girl in the music industry. She sprinkled some clues in her blind-item song and invited people to guess the identity of the Mean Girl. Katy Perry responded not-so-cryptically and the guessing was over. Yesterday, Page Six said the drama was basically about John Mayer and how they both dated him. But! TMZ says that it’s not JUST about Mayer. It’s also about… dancers.

Taylor Swift believes Katy Perry is a thief … and we’ve learned that’s the basis of their feud. The girl-on-girl war ignited when 3 of Taylor’s dancers jumped ship and joined Katy’s tour. Taylor felt betrayed because she became very close to the dancers and considered them family.

But here’s the thing. The 3 dancers had actually worked with Katy first, but when Katy’s tour ended several years ago they needed work. So they signed up as dancers during Taylor’s tour.

We’re told the dancers told Taylor up front … they did not want to sign for the full tour — they wanted a 30-day out, and we’re told it’s because they were just waiting for Katy to go back on tour. When Katy hit the stage again, they gave their 30-day notice, but Taylor got so pissed off she fired them on the spot.

All of this went down a year ago but we’re told Taylor held a grudge, which boiled over when she wrote a song — “Bad Blood” — alluding to Katy screwing her over. It’s turned into a full on war, with Taylor not-so-coyly talking about the alleged betrayal — and Katy responding on Twitter by calling Swift … Regina George in sheep’s clothing.

[From TMZ]

So, is this girlfight about other girls? Or is it more complicated than that? I think the dancers are probably part of the story, but I’m guessing John Mayer also played his part. Us Weekly’s sources say that: “Katy knows Taylor’s song is about her, which is why she tweeted that [Regina George tweet].” One source says both Katy and Swifty are “very competitive” but at one point they managed to keep things amicable, but no more. As for the dancers, the source says: “They were loyal to Katy when it came time to launch the Prism tour. She didn’t steal them. Taylor just employed them when they weren’t working for Katy.”

Us Weekly also says that if you were speculating that Miley Cyrus was the Mean Girl in Taylor’s blind item song, you wouldn’t be that far off either. Miley and Taylor don’t get along, apparently, although they’ve never employed the same dancers.

  1. Lady Macbeth says:

Pfft… they’re probably two vapid ladies in real life. I like some of their songs but their gossipdrama is endless….

  2. Emily says:

Why does it have to be about John Mayer? I believe the dancer explanation. The fact that they both have the same target audience probably also doesn’t help.

    • Marianne says:

well when Katy started dating John Mayer (Taylor’s ex), the bad blood could have already started brewing between them, and then having dancers leave for Katy could have just been the icing on the cake for Taylor.

    • T.C. says:

Agree it’s more the dancers story than John Mayer but since it’s two women, the media has to make it about a guy. Because professional women have nothing else on their minds or fight about nothing else but boys.

Like I said yesterday Swifty picked on the wrong person this time. Katy will come out swinging to expose Swifty’s real life mean girl antics. With the dancers speaking to TMZ and letting the REAL story out about them giving her 30 days notice but being fired anyway Swifty looks like the villain in this story. The media will pick this up and stop protecting Swifty.

      • Debbie says:

Taylor looks like an immature spoiled brat. If the dancers were upfront about the type of job they wanted before she hired them and she agreed she can’t get mad when the follow through, she can be disappointed but grow up it’s a business.

All Taylor does is play victim, I’m not saying she hasn’t been in some cases but she isn’t in EVERY SINGLE SITUATION. And frankly the constant whining and blaming has just made her insufferable.

  3. Jordyn says:

I believe every word of this.

  4. Lulu says:

When Katy and Taylor started out I liked Katy and couldn’t stand Taylor and now it’s the complete opposite. Her divorce really brought out her true colours.

  5. Dani2 says:

This is the blandest celebrity feud ever.

  6. Emily says:

I also have a conspiracy theory. You know how Taylor likes to get a fake boyfriend whenever she’s dropping a new album? Maybe she’s deliberately picking a fight with Katy Perry as a new way to drum up some publicity for her new album.

    • Rocketmerry says:

I like this idea! I’m very much a conspiracy theorist, so yeah, I could see both of them involved in creating a fake drama for exposure. Does Katy also have something to launch or is she just engaging because…?

Anywho, this whole thing reminds me of the “Jack is a dancer” storyline in Will&Grave. That thing involved Jlo and JJackson. Ages ago. Sigh.

    • Ava says:

Her album comes out in Oct and for a week after her single dropped is was the number one album purchased…her single has been number # 1 on Digtial sales since it was released , she had the fastest # 1 song on billboard hot 100, breaking a record according to billboard ….. Which calculates streaming, radio play and digital sales… Ah don’t think she needs anything but her music to drum publicity for her music.

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

If her music can stand on its own, then why doesn’t she just let it? No more writing painfully idiotic songs about painfully obvious people/relationships, no more running blabbermouthed to the press to drop “hints” that are so obvious that even a seven year old could figure them out….oh wait, that’s her core audience! She’s a celebrity who wouldn’t have a career if it wasn’t for her playing the gossip and publicity game that is celebrity in the 21st century. Even Swift is bright enough to know that.

    • Candy Love says:

I would like to add to that by saying I think thier both in on it funny how both ladies have something to promote right now and are in a public feud with each other. Which Is bringing both ladies and their projects more media attention.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

That’s not a conspiracy theory; it’s an obvious and observable pattern of behavior. She knows she can’t make it on the merits of her music, so she resorts to this bull to drum up public interest and renew loyalty every time an album is dropping. I mean, *OMG,* three whole dancers? Wow, she sure came close to sabotaging the entire tour!

  7. Abbott says:

But I thought Katy almost dismantled a whole arena tour? Three dancers gave 30-days notice? Girl, please. Take your Lisa Frank burn book and shake it off

    • Dedre says:

Hahahaha yeah I’m sure Swifty fired them and then went to her dressing room and cried. Then she told her managers “she ruined everything! the tour is off!” So dramatic!

    • HH says:

“Take your Lisa Frank burn book and shake it off” >>> HAAAAAAAA! Abbott, your one-liners are truly a blessing in the morning.

    • mia girl says:

“Take your Lisa Frank burn book and shake it off”
      This line is truly inspired.

  8. Cherry says:

Like, seriously. JUST HIRE DIFFERENT DANCERS, you two morons. There must be millions of dancers out there hoping to get a job.

    • Pamela says:

      THIS!

Why would you even hire dancers that didn’t want to do the whole tour? I bet they were great dancers, but there are a LOT of great dancers that would love to have such a steady and long term gig.

Hell– this almost makes me wonder if Taylor didn’t hire them to annoy Katy in the first place.

    • Size Does Matter says:

This is what I was wondering! Are there only six good backup dancers available or something? I mean, I understand that Casper Smart is back off the market and excluding the traumatized little people from Miley’s Bangerz tour, but still.

And I totally don’t get how losing three backup dancers whom she knew were going to leave early is “sabotaging a whole arena tour.” Drama, thy name is Swifty.

  9. INeedANap says:

It’s interesting that for all that T.Swizzle (thanks QQ!) is supposed to be super sweet to everyone and vacations with her dancers, these folks were loyal to Katy Perry over Swifty. Clearly, working for Perry has some merits.

  10. Brin says:

    ME-OW!

  11. Artimis says:

Just what I’ve always thought about Swifty, 100% passive aggressive mean girl. Yeuch.

    • doofus says:

I was kind of thinking the same thing…like, Swift’s attitude is “I’m so sweet and nice and it’s everybody else who’s just so mean!” while being the meanest one of them all.

I’m reminded of a saying (and I’m sure this is not exactly how it goes, but…)…

If you meet an a-hole or two during the day, you met a couple of a-holes. but if everyone you meet that day is an a-hole, then who is the REAL a-hole?…

    • Adrien says:

She’s passive aggressive gold medalist. She hates confrontation.

    • L says:

Have you ever noticed that the person who says they hate drama and that they hate confrontation is always the one starting drama and being passive aggressive about it? That’s Swifty in a nutshell.

      • macey says:

        This^^^
same with girls/women who say they never get along with other women b/c of this or that etc., its usually them who is doing the very thing they complain about with others.

  12. lucy2 says:

Both of them are too old to be engaging in this sort of junior high feud crap.

  13. Toot says:

Taylor sounds straight psycho, and I’m not a fan of Katie.

  14. Victoria1 says:

what I get from these stories are, these girls have dancers? for what songs???? And why the hell do I care? Argh.

  15. Jade says:

I think both of them are laughing about this over pizza. They’re not dating anyone so the only way to get in the news next is a girl on girl fight. Personally Taylor annoys me lesser though.

  16. CandyKay says:

I think it’s great that two intelligent women are in the position to be running their own tours and hiring their own dancers.

  17. Chris says:

First World problems. Maybe Kanye could lend Taylor some dancers. He owes her a favor.

  18. Maria says:

You know what would be great? An actual fight between those 2 drama queens. Imagine an award show where they just tear each others hair out while the likes of Kimye look absolutely appalled. Sure it’d be tacky as hell but oh so entertaining. I guess it would make these award shows actually worthwhile. Fingers crossed for the next VMAs emas and what not . I’ll be ready with some popcorn 😀

  19. Zombie Shortcake says:

It’s the cola wars of bland, card board pop tarts.

  20. TheOriginalKitten says:

Team Meredith Grey and Olivia!!!!! =^..^=

  21. MsMercury says:

Okay, I’m team no one but the TMZ story sounds like BS and from Katy’s camp. Example:

they did not want to sign for the full tour — they wanted a 30-day out, and we’re told it’s because they were just waiting for Katy to go back on tour

    1. But did they sign for a full tour anyway? TMZ doesn’t say but if they did the dancers broke their contract by asking to leave in the middle of the tour. All it says is they didn’t want to sign the contract. But they probably did so they could get paid. I highly doubt Taylor agreed to let someone go with 30 days notice. A tour takes time work. Most dancers are just happy to have a job.

    2. I highly doubt anyone (including TS) would hire someone who was working for someone else and someone that would have those kind of conditions. Putting together a tour takes time and each piece is important. She could have found different dancers if these three already had jobs.

Plus the dancers gave interviews when this happened and said they left because Katy asked them to. So maybe they felt closer to her. idk but the story now has changed~

    3. I do think Katy took her dancers because she has been shady towards other pop girls. I do think Taylor should let it go.

    • Candy Love says:

The dancers are people with a mind of there own and not possessions. They left Taylor tour because they wanted to Katy didn’t take anything.

      • MsMercury says:

Exactly, and I don’t care about that. But I think the new story is Pr that they were going to go back to Perry in the middle of Taylor’s tour.

      • Bridget says:

You don’t just leave home for a tour and come back in a year – there is usually a break between significant legs, of a month or two. That’s probably when they were planning on leaving.

    • Bridget says:

Considering that the article says they gave their 30 day notice, it sounds like Taylor initially accepted their terms, though chose to fire them immediately instead of take notice. The Red Tour was primarily a US tour with a handful of international dates, they could have easily just signed on only for the US part. Only a couple of the countries it travelled to even required Visas, and it would have been easier to plan on plugging in new dancers – dancers get hurt or sick (its a physical job, after all) so there’s gotta be protocol in place to replace them. It just sounds like Taylor thought they would change their minds.

      • MsMercury says:

The article doesn’t say though that Taylor accepted their terms (all it says is that the dancer didn’t want to sign) I don’t believe she came up with a different contract for three of the dancers and one for the rest of the dancers. I think all of the dancers singed the same contract. Again I think it would be BS to take three dancers that were hired by someone else. And have to search for new dancers in the middle of the tour. I think the story is false.

      • Bridget says:

The article actually states that they requested a 30 day notice be included in their contract, and that they then gave 30 days notice. That more than implies that the notice period was in their contract – it also states that Taylor is the one who terminated immediately. We’re talking about the journalistic standards of TMZ here, but if the dancers themselves were in breach it would have been a detail pertinent enough to be included.

Basically, the story is that Taylor hired dancers that were only available short term, and was disappointed when they didn’t change their minds after spending time with her.

  22. Veronica says:

If the dancers signed on to a full tour and left, that is kind of shitty, but if they actually gave her full warning they were looking for interim work, then her blaming Perry is ridiculous. If dancers themselves made an active decision to leave on their own, I don’t see how Perry is the one “sabotaging” anything. Perry annoys me more than Swift, so I kind of resent the fact that I’m siding with her on this if that’s really what went down. I’ll take this over fighting for John Mayer, but still.

You also have to be amazed at the lack of self-awareness in Swift. She just got done telling us she doesn’t want her work trivialized, then drops a blind item that’s dominated the headlines ever since. That’s why her music never enters the equation – we’re too busy talking about her high school drama. Which is fucking outrageous when you think about how much she’s accomplished as a business woman. She’s either playing the pop music PR game like a fiddle or she’s just that petty. Both, maybe?

  23. Marianne says:

If they only signed a 30 contract in hopes of returning to Katy, then that changes the story, because legally there was nothing Taylor could do. Also, if that were the case from the start why would Taylor even bother hiring them in the first place.

It would be different if the girls were hired with intention they would be there for the whole tour, only for them to leave last minute. Then it would be kind of a dick move from Katy to hire dancers already committed and it would suck for Taylor to scramble to either hire new dancers or change routines to accommodate that loss.

  24. Cinderella says:

Oh please, it’s about John Mayer. I think both are still hot for him, however that darn Giada keeps interfering.

  25. kri says:

Poaching dancers?! Fighting over Prince Valiant Mayer?! Making Mean Girls references on Twitter? GASP. The horror of it all-THE BETRAYAL!!! Someone get me a fainting couch and some lavender water, here comes a fit of the vapors. This reminds me of high school when scandal erupted when 2 cheerleaders got into a “fight” and used their pom-poms as weapons. (i’m not making this up). It was so dum dum, but so funny.

  26. Bridget says:

This is what Taylor Swift DOES. Notice that her burn songs are never about someone un-famous? Its a part of her marketing M.O. And I gotta give her credit, its clearly worked!

  27. T.C. says:

Taylor’s entire career is about name checking other famous people either through blonds or out right saying their names then going to the press to hype it up as drama. Wasn’t one of her first songs about name dropping Tim McGraw? She has lived a sheltered life and doesn’t really have the life experience or originality to sing about anything else.

  28. Emily C. says:

Does Taylor Swift get along with ANY other female pop-stars for more than a hot minute? Or any woman? I dislike Katie Perry, but Taylor Swift is a whole other level of insufferable. I’m happy to see Swift’s twee “innocent” persona is no longer being swallowed, though.
