Ben Affleck got drunk a lot for ‘Gone Girl’, he’s ‘obsessive’ about blackjack

batfleck cover

I can’t believe this is happening! CB is letting me write about her Batfleck boyfriend. To be fair, I think she’s more into Matt Damon these days (who isn’t?). Ben Affleck and David Fincher did a joint conversation/interview with Details Magazine to promote Gone Girl. The conversation is… douche-tastic. You can read the full piece here. He talks about counting cards (as in, he confirms he counts cards) and how he was boozing it up heavily to play Nick in Gone Girl. Because he’s so Method. I’m assuming he was so Method playing Nick, he also had an affair with Emily Ratajkowski? Some assorted quotes from the piece:

Affleck got drunk a lot to play Nick: “When you look at a movie and think, Oh, that’s the real guy, that’s probably a good thing. You know what I mean? Like, in the book, for example, it said that he was puffy and hungover. And I dedicated myself to that, and I think it’s quite convincing.

Counting cards: “That is a true story. I mean, that took place. I took some time to learn the game and became a decent blackjack player. And once I became decent, the casinos asked me not to play blackjack. I mean, the fact that being good at the game is against the rules at the casinos should tell you something about casinos… They don’t even want you to have a sporting chance, really. There’s a lot of hospitality, backslapping, when they think you’re gonna come in and dump money, and if they think you might leave with some money, it’s like, ‘You know what? Why don’t you try craps or roulette?’”

Why blackjack? “I had always liked blackjack. I don’t play any other games of chance. I don’t bet on football games, and I don’t gamble at all, really, outside of that. But I knew with blackjack that there’s a way you can improve your odds. And so I started trying to learn. And then I just got to a point in my life where I’m like, “If I’m going to do something, I’m going to try and do it really well.” It was sort of presented like I did something illegal. You know what I mean? I got good. I’m sort of obsessive. I tend to get myopic and get into one thing. And really get into it. And then get bored and switch to something else.”

He’s obsessive but not compulsive: “Because I get to correct the impression that there’s something wrong with it or that it demonstrates some, like, compulsive activity. Usually, when you’re a compulsive gambler, the casinos don’t ask you to leave because you’re beating them.”

On the reports that Jennifer Garner hates his gambling: “See, that’s tabloid s–t. That’s all bulls–t. They completely lie. I mean, I can show you 10 articles of Star and OK!—those magazines feel totally comfortable absolutely fictionalizing every single element of the story. And there’s nothing you can do about that. My only hope is that people with any common sense recognize that those stories are false. And, I don’t know, there’re worse stories . . .

Relating to soap operas: “I could definitely relate to the way—the need of media outlets to tell brief, digestible, readily identifiable stories that include two-dimensional archetype characters— And that you kind of get cast in a soap opera that you have no desire to be in.”

[From Details]

I don’t really know what to say about the whole conversation of Affleck’s gambling. This is a guy who has had gambling problems in the past (he’s had alcohol problems in the past too). I appreciate that he’s self-aware enough to recognize his obsessive behavior and I guess it’s good that he’s only obsessed with blackjack (except I know he’s also a huge high-stakes poker player too). But I think he’s kidding himself if his thought process is “this is just a minor obsession, I don’t have compulsive behavior about gambling.” It feels like he’s sliding back into some really bad habits, but he’s still in the phase where he’s trying to explain it all away.

  1. lisa says:

so it was a normal tuesday for him

  2. Eleonor says:

Translation he was a drunk mess addicted to gambling. And not, definetly not a problem.

  3. Loopy says:

He seemed overly defensive when they said Jennifer doesn’t like his gambling.

    • MoxyLady007 says:

And yet he didn’t really correct it. Just called it bullshit. No details of the “truth”.

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

He sounds like a typical alcoholic – no accountability. Young People – don’t have a life partner who has to have alcohol as their lifestyle. You won’t have Jeannie in a bottle you’ll have Mr Hyde out of the bottle. Heartache Hotel and it will be all your fault no matter what they do.

  4. Jaderu says:

Ben stop talking. You’re killing any hot that is left.
And I hope that Details cover shot is tongue in cheek because it’s ridiculous.

    • HatetheletterK says:

I have to disagree. I saw that picture and thought to myself, that is what a real movie star looks like.

      • MrsBPitt says:

I’m with you, HatetheletterK! Ben is smoking hot!!!

      • don't kill me i'm french says:

He looks like Ben Affleck period Pearl Harbor ( who according to many was not his best period in life)

      • Esmom says:

Ha, my mom has almost zero interest in celebs but she still swoons at her memory of Pearl Harbor-era Ben!

      • Darkladi says:

Boston….bad boy….this photo shoot? I want to tuck into him like a steak dinner. And I can’t believe I just wrote that.

      • Jayna says:

I thought the same thing. Loved the photos. Not up to Liam Neeson magazine photos but still movie star quality nonetheless.

      • cyndi says:

I have to agree with others (from a different site), that he looks like a flasher in that cover shot. Chester the Molester. 👀

    • Birdix says:

Something about the angle of his head makes me think of the shots on the daily show where they superimpose Jon (or some senator)’s head on someone else’s body.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I think he looks good face/body wise, but the angles of the poses are a bit awkward. I wish the photographer had told him to tilt his head back just a bit in the first one and to make a better line with his back in the 2nd (lower belly closer to the chair and his head up and aligned with his back).

I am a total sucker for a bicep, I mean a man, in a white shirt. 😉 They were so close to making these shots great!

    • RocketMerry says:

I’m with you, these shots are terrible. I mean, you need some serious intensity to pull off poses like that, and Affleck is just so snooze-worthy to me….
Also, the coat is too small for him or something (?), it’s like the clothes they put him in are not quite his size, which adds to the embarrassment and ridiculousness of the shoot.

As for the gambling… yeah, I think Garner really puts up with a lot from him, and if after all he put his family through with his addictions all he can think of is his OWN personal pleasure and satisfying his OWN vices, then I say let him walk, Jennifer. Let him walk.

  5. Christo says:

I realize that Ben gained a second wind after the success of Argo, but he always seems angry, if not anxious, ever since the Bennifer debacle from so many years ago—and these photos or really any photo (casual, staged or otherwise) after 2004 always seem to confirm it. I know that the conventional wisdom on the street is that the combination of Bennifer versus the disaster of Gigli could have potentially ruined his career, but all of that seems a little too trite and simplistic for an explanation. Who knows? Maybe this can all be interpreted as his “growing up,” but I miss the pre-2004 Ben Affleck that was kind of a smarta$$ and goofy (Forces of Nature).

  6. Abbott says:

    Isn’t he a recovering alcoholic?

  7. aims says:

I thought he was an alcoholic. I plead ignorance when it comes to addiction issues, but I thought they’re supposed avoid that stuff.

    • Abbott says:

I just said the same thing. I believe that’s the rule of thumb: don’t use the bad sh*t.

    • Jedi says:

I agree, I thought he was in rehab like a decade ago for alcohol. Dangerous path to be taking for a role, thats for sure. Or, you know, an excuse to pick up the bottle again. I feel bad for his family.

    • Jayna says:

I know he was in rehab for Vicodin back during his Gwyneth period. I don’t know if it was for anything else or not. The interview is vague in my memory now that he gave about it back then.

  8. Talie says:

Didn’t he go to rehab for drinking? Seems rather foolish to get drunk when you have a problem.

  9. Bubulle says:

He got drunk a lot ? But he is supposed be a recovering alcoholic, does he think we re stupid ?

Affleck, who turns 29 on August 15, voluntarily checked himself into the facility Tuesday.
“Ben is a self-aware and smart man who has decided that a fuller life awaits him without alcohol,” his publicist, David Pollick, said in a statement Friday. “He has chosen to seek out professional assistance and is committed to traveling a healthier road with the support of his family, friends and fans.”

  10. Birdix says:

Something about this makes him sound a bit arrogant– he proudly takes on the mantle of obsessive –“I got good. I’m sort of obsessive. I tend to get myopic and get into one thing” and also disavows being compulsive (assumedly because those are the losers who can’t stop and thus can’t be as myopic or obsessive?). But it always has seemed odd to me too that card counting is illegal.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Birdix, who wrote: “Something about this makes him sound a bit arrogant–”

That’s because Ben ‘is’ a bit arrogant ‘and’ petty. He just can’t seem to help himself, and that doesn’t–shouldn’t–excuse it.

  11. Gabriella says:

He looks like Ryan Reynolds in that cover photo.

  12. MrsBPitt says:

I think Ben was joking about the “method acting” regarding being bloated and hungover…geez, everyone, get a sense of humor!!!! I think part of the problem with Ben is, he has a very dry sense of humor. My husband is like that. When he makes a joke, some people look at him like he is a jerk. I love his dry wit, and laugh my head off. I guess thats why we have been married 32 years! And I agree with him about the casino’s. They love you as long as you are losing…if you are smart enough or lucky enough to win, out you go!!!!!!

And to answer the question, “who would’nt take Matt Damon over Ben these day”….ummm, me!!!!
You can all have Matt…Ben’s mine!!!!!!!!!

    • Jaderu says:

I love Ben too. I just think he tends to ramble too much in interviews. Like he over talks a certain subject to the point where you don’t believe him anymore or you lose the humor he was going for.
He’s just one of those celebrities I find it hard to stay mad at though.

    • Esmom says:

I came here to say the same thing, I read the drinking thing as a joke, completely. He was making fun of his age, imo. And I don’t think anything he said here was douchey at all, in fact it all sounds both self aware and self deprecating and pretty reasonable to me.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

THANK YOU!! He was KIDDING, people! lol
Jaysus. The guy has been sober for years–he’s not going to jeopardize that for a freakin’ movie role.

This thread as an example of how willing people are to believe anything bad about this dude. I swear that everyone just read the header, not a word of the interview..lol…it’s unreal.

      • lucy2 says:

Reading it again, it’s totally possible he’s joking. I hope he is.

      • Chris says:

“This thread as an example of how willing people are to believe anything bad about this dude.”

Kinda reminds you of an Ariana Grande thread, doesen’t it?
        😉

    • Tiffany :) says:

That’s how I read it too! Thank you for making me feel like I am not insane for getting that impression.

  13. lucy2 says:

It sounds to me like he is backsliding into some very bad old habits that he worked to rid himself of – drinking, gambling, etc – and is looking for excuses to justify it.
What’s really sad about it is he’s no longer a single guy who only has to take care of himself, he has a family with young children, and has managed to reboot his whole career as a successful director and sought after actor again.

  14. whatsmyname? says:

He always comes off as defensive and kind of angry to me. He should just let some things roll of his back.

I’m really looking forward to the movie I hope it’s good.

  15. Pager90 says:

    He looks handsome.

  16. Al says:

Didn’t he go to rehab for alcoholism back in the day? I thought he was sober/a total bore.

He shouldn’t gamble. It is a huge weakness, not unlike crystal meth or binge-eating.

  17. GeeMoney says:

He’s a hot mess, don’t get me wrong… but I wouldn’t mind going out drinking and gambling with him. I would think it would be a lot of fun!

  18. bokaki says:

He is reaching Lohan territory with these comments about gambling and Jennifer Garner not liking it…

  19. pk says:

He does seem at a point that he has a stable career and solid family life and people have a hard time accepting it because of his past. Maybe he’s grown up and learned from his mistakes, maybe not. So he plays black jack when he’s away from home, it’s not like he’s been spotted in strip clubs or acting like a drunk mess.

  20. lisa2 says:

I think he is saying he gambles and drinks and is not going to stop. I guess Jennifer if fine with it. She seems to enjoying shopping a great deal. So maybe they both have their thing.

I will see Gone Girl because I like Fincher’s films..

  21. Jess says:

Man, something about him is just so sexy to me. He’s very manly and bad boy ish, but there’s another family type in there too, he’s just yummy.

  22. T.C. says:

“I’m sort of obsessive. I tend to get myopic and get into one thing. And really get into it. And then get bored and switch to something else.”

That explains a lot about his need to share his penis with certain big chested, female co-stars. I have no doubt he loves his wife and they get along well intellectually but when it comes to his libido he has a specific type which usually involves big breasts or big butts.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@T.C., who wrote: “That explains a lot about his need to share his penis with certain big chested, female co-stars. I have no doubt he loves his wife and they get along well intellectually but when it comes to his libido he has a specific type which usually involves big breasts or big butts. … ”

… sliding down a stripper pole.

  23. ColoradoGirl says:

He looks handsome, but why didn’t they get a bigger chair. That chairs looks teeny and he looks like a giant!

  24. Lydia says:

He won an Oscar for an average (albeit entertaining) movie.
He can do whatever he wants and his wife will never, ever leave him.
    He acts like a douchebag…

  25. funcakes says:

Let’s not forget.that these people have publicists to clear up.their image. Ben will always be a mess and he has to play the Hollywood game. He will never give up his vices because he is self.centered. This is evident through numerous interviews.
And Jennifer is not go anywhere because being Mrs Affleck means power.

    • Momissa says:

She isn’t going anywhere….for now. How many years was Maria Shriver with Arnold before the embarrassment of an out-of-wedlock child was too much to bear?

  26. Merritt says:

I’m not looking forward to the “Gone Girl” movie at all. The movie is so miscast for several key roles and Fincher’s interpretation of he book based on his statements is not good.

  27. k says:

so he relapsed? well that sucks for his family

  28. Anna says:

Something about the arrogance of these people (Affleck, Fincher) makes me hope that the performances get critically panned and the movie doesn’t do as well as predicted.

    • Merritt says:

The problem with the movie failing is that most if not all the blame will fall onto Rosamund Pike. If a movie is successful then usually men get the credit, if it fails, women get the blame. Affleck and Fincher will probably be unscathed.

    • Melanie says:

I hope it flops not least because the movie features sex scenes between Neil Patrick Harris a gay actor and Rosamund Pike. I couldn’t even watch that onscreen without laughing. What a terrible casting choice. Won’t see this movie.

      • Jayna says:

You make no sense. Neil can’t play a straight character? Why not? He’s an actor. He was fantastic as the womanizing guy he played on the long-running series, How I Met your Mother, and audiences accepted him in that role even after coming out.. With people like you, no wonder gay actors don’t come out for fear audiences won’t accept them in straight, leading-man type roles and lose parts.

In Brokeback Mountain, it was two straight actors playing two gay men, and they were very believable in their love scenes and as their characters.

By the way, Neil had slept with like 15 women before accepting he was gay and said he enjoyed women. It was just never the same sparks that he felt with a man.

I think Neil will do a great job. I love him in just about anything he does.

You probably have seen a lot of great sex scenes where you didn’t know the actor was gay because he’s not out. Just sayin . . . . . .

      • deehunny says:

@Jayna makes a great point. Sexual orientation doesn’t matter when you are, ya know, ACTING

    • Dee says:

Gone Girl is well promoted since July. They are very savvy in building up the movie. We will see next week as lots of movie critics are looking forward to seeing it. Personally, it is not for me. I don’t like that kind of movie genre. 🙂

  29. Jayna says:

Well, he was joking about being drunk all the time for method acting. I would think anyone could catch that. I guess not reading some of these posts. I have never believed he had a gambling addiction. Like Howard Stern said, he’s a smart player and got punished for that.

I liked the interview and liked Fincher and Ben doing it together and saw nothing deuchetastic in it. If some of the pet actors on here gave this interview, the swooning would be all over the posts.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

Go to twitter and search “Ben Affleck casino”.You’ll find many tweets on a Ben Affleck spotted at casino during Batman/Superman filming .
According to a Las Vegas newspaper,Ben goes to play several times per month

      • Jayna says:

That makes him have a gambling problem? Not seeing it. He could. I have no clue. But I don’t think so. But gambling a few times a month is hardly a gambling addiction.

      • don't kill me i'm french says:

He was reported all this times off at casino. He saw several nights per week at casino during the filming.!!!
Okay! The gambling is his passion only and probably the least of his problems because he has many money ( a few like Keith Richards and the drug)
My problem is probably that i don’t think it’s a sane way to spend time

      • deehunny says:

I guess it depends on frequency. Is he going a few times a week or few times a month?

  30. mlml says:

He looks like he’s struggling to drop some poo poo.

  31. Kate says:

Does he think everyone’s forgotten he’s an addict? Because if not this interview just reads like a cry for help.

    • Lena says:

He never was an addict. He went to rehab to avoid any problems, given his family history. Read some old articles (cir. 2001) not the new, changing- history ones.

      • Kate says:

I remember his behavior back then. He was a hot mess for years and it was starting to bleed into his professional life. He was giving interviews while he was completely drunk, slurring his words, being really sleazy on camera with female interviewers…it was bad. Even he used to acknowledge he had a real problem during those years.

He certainly has a gambling problem right now. When he started getting kicked out of the bigger casino’s he just started driving to smaller ones way out of town, even when Jennifer was visiting with their children. That’s the behavior of an addict. A regular person who just likes to gamble would find another way to spend their time.

      • Dee says:

I am with Kate. He does have a problem. Tweets will tell you how often he has been seen in the crappy casinos in Detroit. Today though, there were tweets that Jennifer and kids are there. They have been seen around town but last weekend he was seen at the casino. And no I am not stalker, lol! I am just an avid tweeter like my husband.

  32. Steph says:

I won’t waste the money to see this movie because I detest supporting elitist snobs.

  33. Meme says:

I think Gone Girl is going to be a mess but I’m hoping for the best because I loved the book. I like Ben; he’s a good actor and director plus he seems like a nice guy. He and Jen have a lovely family.

  34. norah says:

i have always enjoyed fincher films but somehow affleck makes a better director than actor and from the trailer looks like pike and harris overshadow him.wait and watch i guess.

  35. Chris says:

Gone Girl looks like a midday movie.

  36. pnichols says:

just be real that you are a short fused, gambling alcoholic and call it a day. stop justifying your behavior and own it. what’s the big?

  37. Dee says:

My dad was a gambler and at the same time a liar. He never acknowledged that he was a gambling addict till his dying days. Unlike Ben, we didn’t have a lot of money and it affected our family life more so. Ben is in a denial stage. I could be wrong but i grew up with a gambler for a father and it was horrible. With gambling comes other vices, drinking and women. If true, I feel sad for Jennifer and kids. They deserve so much more. I guess there are truth to those blind items. And please don’t say that Jennifer deserves it because no wife should deserve a husband like that especially with little kids.

  38. JoJo says:

I just can’t stand listening to his sob stories about how the media painted him anymore. Let it go. It makes him sound so petty and defensive. Many/most celebrities have had to deal with the same thing – move on.

  39. norah says:

sorry but affleck annoys me. he keeps moaning about bennifer and what happened before – its like jlo forced him to do stuff which not fair to her. he doesnt seem to be happy at all imo – i mean if you have gambling or alcohol issues you stay away from those vices no excuses – and about gone girl – i think affleck is the weakest link in the movie judging from the trailer – i like fincher but maybe he sd have chosen someone else- always felt affleck is better in directing than acting – guess will wait and see. but why is he so grumpy or moody all the time? he is succesful – has a wife and kids – does he miss his care free life? i think so somehow
