Matthew McConaughey is too fancy & Oscar-y to do the ‘Magic Mike’ sequel

I not only watched Magic Mike, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the story more than I expected and of course I enjoyed the dancing. I actually wished there was less story and MOAR DANCING. I wanted to see more of Matt Bomer’s character and even Joe Manganiello’s character instead of the stupid Alex Pettyfer storyline. And of course, I totally loved Matthew McConaughey. A lot of people were like “OMG, Matthew did something completely new and groundbreaking in True Detective/Dallas Buyers Club,” but to my eyes, Matthew’s transformation into a “real actor” came with Magic Mike. He was really wonderful and fearless and delightfully weird in that movie. But now that Matthew has won dozens of awards for True Detective and DBC, he’s too big to do Magic Mike XXL.

Let’s get right down to it, while Channing Tatum has said the entire cast would be back, Dallas, aka Matthew McConaughey, won’t return for the “Magic Mike” sequel. We spoke to “Magic Mike XXL” director Greg Jacobs this week about his new Amazon pilot, “Red Oaks,” and the filmmaker, known for producing many of Steven Soderbergh’s films, including his current series “The Knick,” confirmed to us that McConaughey will not be back.

And while cameras have rolled on the “Magic Mike” sequel—you’ll recall Soderbergh posting slates on Twitter over Labor Day weekend—Jacobs told us that was just second unit footage and the real shoot doesn’t begin until the end of the month. Much of the cast—Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello—will reprise their roles, but it’s unknown beyond that who else is returning, and Jacobs said he couldn’t say much more.

But the filmmaker—who will have Soderbergh acting as his director of cinematography, camera operator and editor—said ‘XXL’ will be “very different.” “What am I allowed to say?” he said with a pause. “It’s road trip movie and put it this way, it’s different enough that once you see it you’ll understand why we made a sequel. No one will be accusing us of making the same movie twice.”

Jacobs says new cast members will join the fold, too, but because those deals aren’t closed he wasn’t at liberty to say who.

[From Indie Wire]

I think this is a mistake for Matthew, IF he’s the one who decided not to do the sequel. It might not have been his call, but I can’t imagine Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh would have rejected a role for Matthew in the sequel. I think it was Matthew’s call and now that he’s every director’s top choice for every role, he doesn’t want to go back to stealing scenes from Charming Potato in a stripper movie. Mistake!

Also, I saw this Lincoln commercial a few nights ago and I just had to roll my eyes. Ever since True Detective, Matthew thinks people want to see him staring off into space and muttering stuff about space and time and the cosmos, man.

Oh my goodness, I just find him to be so sexy! Sigh. All I want to do is play his bongos.

    • mimif says:

But not nearly as sexy as Jack Nicholson and Simon Cowel with their moobs!

    • joan says:

      He is sexy. And charismatic.

But he’s had a lot of more serious films already and wants to continue that, I think. Just saw “Killer Joe” and that was really stone-cold scary, and got sucked in to rewatching “Dallas Buyers Club” on TV — surprised how watchable it was a 2nd time.

He may just not feel it’s worth his time to cram in a Magic Mike sequel.

He manages to really inhabit characters that don’t look like Handsome Matthew, so he’s a real actor.

      • Pager90 says:

        +100
        Exactly.
This is his time, he has to strike while the irons hot with all the quality roles he can get.
I really like Matthew MacHotness he can do no wrong , His wifey is a lucky woman.

  2. Kiddo says:

Blech, Greasy and potato. Indigestion…. And DON’T EVEN, methmoobunderpantzillif!

  3. ReturnoftheMac says:

Damn they’re filming here in Savannah and I was really hoping to stalk ole Matty.

  4. Bubulle says:

How is it a mistake Magic Mike wasn’t good at all, can’t blame him, he won an oscar and he got the leading role in one of the most anticipating movie of this year, good move

    • RocketMerry says:

AGREED. And OMG, any actor who avoids legitimizing Channing Tatum and his extremely weird, expressionless face has my blessing now and forever.

Also, McConaugheyheyhey is rocking right now, I think he has every right to choose to work on whatever he wants.

      • FLORC says:

Agree 100% with both. It was not a great movie. It had some nice dancing scenes, but the story was tiresome. MM is riding high and doing well. He’s made the right choice if he’s the one who said he won’t do the sequel.

And that Lincoln ad felt like a throwback to older commericials with a voiceover of a man speaking softly. Always style and luxury related.
He didn’t write and produce the commercial. He was only paid to be in it because he’s an actor and that’s what they do. I won’t shade him for that.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

This is a guy who did “Failure to Launch” and “The Wedding Planner”–I truly doubt this is about him being “too good”, it might be as simple as scheduling conflicts.

But I’m with you guys…Even if it IS a case of him being choosey, I’m not gonna fault him.

      • Bubulle says:

He did that before the McConaissance, he just doesn’t want to play second fiddle in a subpar movie carry by Channing Potatoe, he works hard to get his career back on track can’t blame him for wanting to be in quality movies.

      • FLORC says:

He was the only good thing about the Wedding Planner. He worked with what he was given.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

But he took the role in True Detective when he had already done films like Mud, The Paper Boy, Wolf on Wall Street, and DBC. I mean, he did a television show that NOBODY knew about and was not a guaranteed slam-dunk when he was already getting critical acclaim and early Oscar buzz for his acting and working with the most cutting-edge directors out there. I just don’t think he’s a snob like that….maybe I’m wrong. He just strikes me as a work-horse who doesn’t turn down a lot of things.

      • Bridget says:

I wonder if another factor comes into play: after losing that crazy amount of weight for DBC, it could be that he doesn’t have to want tp get into MM shape again. He didn’t have an ounce of fat on him in that movie.

      • Brionne says:

He is very handsome, but he still doesn’t look quite like he did prior to losing all that weight. He looks a little sickly still. I wouldn’t be surprised if he just wants to avoid having to be on a special diet and bulking up with muscle. I hope he didn’t damage his heart or kidneys with that drastic weight loss.

  5. Abbott says:

Who would’ve thought Magic Mike would be the breaking ground for Oscar nominees?

    Team Potato 4 Foxcatcher!

  6. MAP says:

I have to admit that ever since True Detective, he can do no wrong in my book. He was absolutely mesmerizing in TD. I saw Magic Mike after TD, and he was also good in that, but nothing tops TD.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

He’s a f*cking fantastic actor (and I have yet to see True Detective).
That being said, that Lincoln commercial makes me want to punch my television.

    • Bex says:

My thoughts exactly, he never did it for me in all his previous roles especially the golden surfer-boy characters that he played but in True Detective he was just wow..

  7. Jem says:

I kind of prefer my Matt M a bit on the B-movie side of things actually.

  8. Sumodo1 says:

All right, all right, all right. No, it’s not all right, or alright. It’s wrong not to do this movie. Just a cameo wouldn’t kill Matty’s career. He thinks he’s Paul Newman, now? Paul KEPT his sense of humor.

  9. Jaderu says:

LOL I laughed out loud when I saw the Lincoln commercial the other night. I asked my husband if he ever thinks about his life and what directions he has taken while he’s driving. He said he thinks about boobs.
    Gotta love ya Matty.

  10. Lilacflowers says:

MM has been up here in Boston filming lately so it probably is a schedule conflict more than anything else.

  11. Tig says:

To me, the beginning of the McConaissance was Mud- he was just so good and heartbreaking in that role. Entirely possible that DBC was filmed bef Mud- but it was released first. I have loved him since Dazed and Confused- hope he continues to do well.

    • Jaderu says:

Mud was terrific. I actually thought he was better in that than Dallas Buyers Club.

    • lucy2 says:

I finally just watched that, haven’t seen DBC yet, but he was great in Mud. I think it was the Lincoln Lawyer though when people started talking about a career resurgence?
I was a big fan of his when A Time to Kill came out, and then in the depths of his romcom rut, pretty much wrote him off. But I have to give him a lot of credit, he changed his film choices, dug deep, and has put out some amazingly great work in the past few years.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      I loved him in Mud.

  12. Cali says:

But MM was too good to be in the FIRST one so he done the world a favor by adding his acting chips to a subpar film and is now moving on ride his new wave of success that doesn’t last forever!

  13. lucy2 says:

“No one will be accusing us of making the same movie twice.” Thank goodness for that, as I thought Magic Mike was awful. I don’t find Channing or the rest of the cast (Bomer aside) that appealing, and overall thought it was a terribly boring story. I wouldn’t blame Matthew one bit for not wanting to be in the sequel, I’d imagine he has his pick of roles at the moment.
But I think he mentioned it in the past, so maybe it was just a scheduling problem.

    • Ange says:

Yeah except for the dancing I thought it was a terrible movie. ‘Whiny man boy who doesn’t realise how good he’s got it pursues grumpy, sullen woman. There’s also a brother in there somewhere.’

  14. TedTheodoreLogan says:

I don’t blame him. Lightening rarely strikes twice.

  15. tabasco says:

Tough call. I can see both sides, I think. If I’m Matty McC: on the one hand, it’s a totally fun movie and potentially great PR if it’s done right because then he’s the guy who can do Oscar stuff AND elevate fun stuff like Magic Mike and hasn’t lost his sense of humor, etc. and soderberg is involved. it’s not like this is some budget production. on the other hand, i’m an oscar winner now. do i really want to risk going back to being seen as That Guy?

I also don’t think McC’s fully recovered The Hot since losing all that weight for DBC. I probably wouldn’t kick him out of bed, but I’m not sure his bod is back to Magic Mike levels. Maybe he doesn’t *want* that look back?

  16. Pager90 says:

Love Matthew MacHotness, he’s doing the right thing, he has to go with the quality roles that come to him at this time. He is a great actor and a lot of new doors have probably opened up for him ,so he wants to capitalize on them.
Good luck to him, I’ll go see him in anything.

  17. Bridget says:

I have an alternate theory: he didn’t want to have to get back into shape for it. It took him quite a while to gain that weight back, and it may just sound unappealing to get back into stripper shape.

  18. Jess says:

Ugh. I can’t stand Matthew. Loved him in dazed and confused but the more I see him in real life the more I dislike him.

    • Dana m says:

I think Matt Mc is such a personable and down to earth Hollywood star. I had the privilege to have been around him from time to time in Austin (we both frequent an establishment). He says hello first and asks how are you doing ( to complete strangers too). Not a diva at all like JLo who requests no eye contact, etc. Great guy.

  19. Maria of MD says:

Considering that McConaughey’s character had taken his business to Miami while ‘Magic Mike’ was staying in Tampa, I’m not sure how he could be in the sequel. Their characters had gone in separate directions.
