Vince Vaughn really is going to do ‘True Detective’ Season 2: shocking?

Well, this is going to be sort of interesting. Over the weekend, Colin Farrell confirmed his casting in Season 2 of True Detective. His casting had been long-rumored and there weren’t strong feelings for or against him, you know? Some people were happy, some people were like “Meh.” What’s weird is that the most bizarre name thrown into the “casting rumor” jungle has come to fruition though: Vince Vaughn is going to have a major role in Season 2.

It’s finally official: Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will star in True Detective season two. HBO made the announcement today, Sept. 23.

Justin Lin, who recently helmed the Scorpion pilot, will direct the first two episodes of the eight-episode second season. Production will begin later this fall in California. The official logline from HBO: “Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.”

Creator Nic Pizzolatto is once again penning the HBO series.

Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, a “compromised detective” who is torn between a corrupt police department and the mobster who “owns him.” Vaughn will take on the role of Frank Semyon, described as a career criminal who may lose his empire after his attempts to move into legitimate business are upset by the murder of a business partner.

Still missing? Two other police officers, including a female lead. Mad Men Star Elisabeth Moss is said to be in the running. Other news outlets have named Jessica Biel and Rachel McAdams as potential stars as well. The Killing’s Michelle Forbes may be involved as well. And then there’s Taylor Kitsch, who was reportedly up for a role at the same time Farrell’s name first surfaced. HBO said more casting will be announced as its confirmed, so don’t consider the Friday Night Lights veteran out of the running just yet.

[From E! News]

So, Vince Vaughn is playing the “career criminal,” at least that’s what it seems like. We still have to find out the male actor and female actor playing the other two cops. I have to admit… I probably would have bought Vince as a down-on-his-luck dirty cop type, but I actually think he’ll be better as a career criminal-type. What always bugged me about Vince Vaughn’s career is that he managed to convince people that he was a leading man. He’s not really. He’s a character actor and he should have been doing more character-driven ensembles this whole time.

Oh, and now that Vince has been confirmed, I’m really, really hoping that Elisabeth Moss is coming on board. Moss just signed on to that “Rather-gate” movie starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford though. Huh. Well, if it’s not Moss… just anyone but Jessica Biel. Please.

    I love that casting.

  2. Abbott says:

Michelle Forbes was AMAZING in The Killing.

    • Lori says:

she is really great. She was even good in a very tacky storey line in True Blood. And great in Chicago Fire.

  3. Loopy says:

I have yet to see him in a serious role, but i like his comedic timing, such a dry sense of humour.

    • LAK says:

try PSYCHO, RETURN TO PARADISE, THE CELL

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

Vince Vaughn is a terrific dramatic actor. He truly does have the depth of Robin Williams. I love this casting! 🙂

    • thecookingpan says:

And Domestic Disturbance – he was seriously creepy in that movie. Even in his comedic roles, you’re never entirely sure if he’s going to go psycho – he has that ability to leave you guessing…

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

        @TheCookingPan …

I totally forgot about Vince’s role in “Domestic Disturbance!”

    • JB says:

Vince Vaughn is great at dramatic roles… he was doing more drama in the late 90s after breaking out in Swingers but he seemed to find more mainstream success w/ the fast-talking shtick roles he does in Wedding Crashers, Old School, and all the forgettable ones as of late.

To reiterate some of the same comments, check him out in “Return to Paradise”, “A Cool, Dry Place”, “Clay Pigeons”, “Psycho” – yeah the remake sucked but I think it’s cuz VV was SO flipping hot it was hard to buy him as Norman Bates, and “The Cell”.

He was pretty damn hot in all his earlier films, too. He hasn’t aged well but I still love him.

    • Maria of MD says:

Vince was a total scene stealer in Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

  4. Sixer says:

Um… colour me uninspired for S2, I’m afraid. Neither casting interests me at all. Hopefully, they’ll get Moss. I actually like her!

  5. Ainsley says:

I like Vince. He’s a better actor than the roles he has been getting/or taking.

But he’s a big guy and Colin is a twig. Maybe it will be a good contrast.

  6. AG-UK says:

I think he could pull it off, he was good in Clay Pigeons years ago but has gone the rom-com avenue..

    • Chris says:

Agree. Swingers and Clay Pigeons got him off to a solid start then he kinda lost his way.

    • EscapedConvent says:

He was SO great in Clay Pigeons. He’s good at playing a psycho charmer. I also loved Return To Paradise and wonder why more people haven’t seen it.

  7. MrsBPitt says:

I actually don’t mind Vince. He was good in The Cell, and I am just glad he isn’t doing another inane comedy! My only other comment is NOT BIEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Karen says:

I have always like Vince. People should go check out some of his older stuff. Return To Paradise is completely underrated…. It’s a must see for Vince fans (or Joaquin Phoenix).

As far as the female character – I’m pretty much for anyone not named Biel.

Kinda disappointed this one won’t have the same director as last season. He did a fantastic job. I really think using one director made such a huge difference in the continuity of the show.

  9. Maria says:

Vince has it in him to play a criminal, I see it.

After watching In Bruges, A Home At the End Of the World, and Seven Psychopaths I know Colin will kill this.

I can see him as a compromised cop, he did well as a dirty cop in that one movie with Edward Norton.

I don’t know about Moss but I’d love to see Dawson (I liked her in Trance).

    • Tiffany :) says:

I agree, I think the casting sounds good so far. I am especially excited to see Colin do his thing.

I like Moss, but I have always like Dawson and would love to see her in something where she is allowed to show her talent more fully. I just hope that whatever female they chose, that they put talent over look. I also hope the character is written with as much depth and nuance as the male characters.

  10. Esmom says:

I didn’t see the first season since I don’t have HBO (hoping it might turn up on Netflix) but I am intrigued by this season based on this story. Would love to see Elisabeth Moss do it, I really like her work.

Also, are these photos of Vince new(ish)? If so he is looking really good.

    • Blannie says:

My library has the first season on DVD – for free! I only got through two hours of it and lost interest. I didn’t care for Matthew M. I thought Woody Harrelson was great, but Matthew’s character was too weird for me.

      • Esmom says:

Good thought, I’m sure our library has it too. That’s how I caught up on Downton Abbey. I’m not a fan of Matthew M, either, which is probably part of the reason I haven’t felt any real urgency to see it, even though so many people have raved about it.

  11. Chris says:

I’d prefer Lauren Ambrose over all of the above. Can’t believe she doesn’t get more work.

  12. Kali says:

Yup, into it. I know this is possibly going to be a bit heretical to fans of Season 1 but the casting for S2 (so far) intrigues me way more than S1 did.

  13. Sojourner says:

Michelle Forbes, please! Woman has depth and charisma.

  14. grabbyhands says:

Both he and Colin Farrell are way too capable of overplaying their roles and chewing up scenery, but they have also done some really good work, so I can give them the benefit of the doubt. However, if Jessica Biel is hired, I’m going to have to give the new season a pass and think about catching it later.
I am already concerned that they are messing with the one director formula, since it was one of the things they touted as having really made a difference in the the quality of the first season-and it did. Changing it to the network scenario of having multiple directors for a season means it is more likely to be uneven. I can only assume that is is either cheaper to have multiple directors or HBO decided that since season one was such a hit, that they can already mess with a winning formula. Or both. Bad idea.

  15. Deb says:

Worst casting ever. RIP True Detective. You’ll be remembered for one great first season.

  16. sheryl_l says:

they ruined it for me. Not only Collin Farrell has not the appeal to carry the show as the main character, but the addition of Vaughn makes the show absolutely ridiculous to follow a MacCoughnahey/Harrelson cast. They’re desperate. Also: congratulations to the show creators for insist with white male leads, why not something absolutely rule breaking like two talented female leads like: Robin Wright and Sandra Bullock would be the perfect mix of darkness and hilarious , plus the bad guy being someone like Viola Davis. I know that casting is impossible since Wright is already a lead in House of Cards and she said that won’t be doing anymore Tv, Bullock maybe would never accept and Davis is in the new Shonda show. But the idea would be original, fresh and amazing. Vaughn and Farrell? Meh…won’t be watching.

  17. shannon says:

I love this casting and think both Ferrell and Vaughn are good actors. If the casting genie’s are listening – PLEASE, McADAMS, PLEASE.

  18. Misstee says:

A vote for Rosario Dawson please – though in reality anyone but Biel.

Have to say though im really not feeling the casting choices so far – especially after that abomination of a remake of Total Recall

  19. eribra says:

Love Vince in return to paradise, he can do this. Colin Farrell, character actor who happens to be gorgeous so they want to make him the lead- he will be fine too- very nuanced performances, I like the two male picks, hoping not Biel, not keeping up with the other possibilities, not familiar with Moss.

  20. kri says:

Oh, I really think Vince is perfect for playing a charming psycho. He’s def got the goods for that. There is something in his face-kinda unhinged while still having a twinkle in his eye. He might surprise the hell out of us.

  21. Pumpkin Pie says:

I haven’t watched True Detective yet. Is is worth watching? I like Vince Vaughn so will check it out. Hey Vince 😉

  22. JenniferJustice says:

I prefer him in serious roles. I do not care for his comedy attempts. I don’t find him funny at all. I had a hard time beleiving anybody thought he was funny other than himself, like Ashton Kutcher, until I read this thread. I see some do find him funny. I’ll stick to serious roles for him for a thousand.

  23. InVain says:

I really enjoyed S1, but I just couldn’t jump on the MM bandwagon. I like him and all….but I just didn’t care for his casting or him in that role. I believe originally, WH and MM were supposed to play the other’s role, but I guess after reading the scripts MM preferred Rust’s character more. Either way, I’m intrigued by Colin and Vince and I’m going to keep an open mind. Have to remember it’s a completely different story and completely different characters. I just hope HBO doesn’t F this up just because S1 was such a hit. I feel like they take too many liberties when they have a hit….don’t fix it if it ain’t broke!

    ANYONE BUT BIEL!!

    • magpie says:

Really? I thought MM was AMAZING when he was his younger self and WH was just fab as the douchey family man.

    • magpie says:

Really? I thought MM was AMAZING when he was his younger self and WH was just fab as the douchey family man.

I would like to see a woman with some lines on her face, so actually none of the mentioned gals.

  24. Allie says:

I think this is really disappointing. I loved Season 1 but I don’t have high hopes for season 2.

  25. Hannah says:

I think this is great news. He was a really good serious actor long before he was ever pushing out two poorly written “comedies” a year. I’m super happy about this. If Matt can get a renaissance, I don’t see why Vince can’t.

Also, ever since I heard him on the WTF podcast I have loved him even more.

  26. Ginger says:

I for one look forward to the dynamic of VInce and Colin. And…yes hopefully Elizabeth Moss! LOVE her!

  27. magpie says:

I think they are both underrated and very capable actors. I am more worried about directing. Season one felt like a movie cut in 8 episodes because it all had Cary Fukunaga’s amazing esthetic. That’s something a series like Mad Men misses…one episode can be awesome, the next meh.
