Jennifer Lawrence is Glamour UK’s ‘best dressed’ woman: good pick?

Jennifer Lawrence

As Kaiser mentioned earlier today, Jennifer Lawrence nabbed the best-dressed female award from Glamour UK. She stands alongside best-dressed man Tom Hiddleston, who is an excellent choice. Tom may be known for his velvet, but he can wear the hell out of any suit. The boy has style and probably picks out his own stuff.

My JLaw, on the other hand, is not very stylish. Her street style is improving, but she’s not doing it alone. She’s had a makeover in the clothing department since early 2013. I don’t think that Jennifer’s personality is fake at all, but her presentation as a fashion girl is fully fabricated. One of the reasons she keeps grabbing Dior contracts is so she doesn’t have to dress herself. All of this would be fine if Dior would put her in some nice dresses. Instead, they keep handing her candy-colored, wrinkled pieces. Budget Dior, if you will.

Sigh. This title is what the Glamour UK voters wanted, so I guess that’s fine. I agree with Kaiser that Lupita Nyong’o would have been a better winner. Lupita takes risks in fashion. Even last year’s winner, Kristen Stewart, wore a variety of different looks and designers. She looked ridic sometimes, but I appreciate how she mixed it up. Jennifer plays it too safe. She’s probably terrified of making the wrong decision, so she hands off the duties elsewhere. Her red carpet looks are almost always Dior. In my dream world, she’d wear a lot more Calvin Klein.

FYI: Team Goop is still talking about Martin Lawrence. Look Magazine (via the Mail) says Gwyneth Paltrow approves of JLaw becaus she’s “a smart, beautiful woman.” The mag says Goop had Jennifer over for tea. They ate homemade scones in the garden! I’m not buying this story at all. No fart detail.

All of those Dior dresses posted above look absolutely awful. JLaw does not have much style or fashion sense. She just wears whatever is given to her by Dior. Lupita doesn’t have a lot of fashion sense either but she takes more risks.

  2. Amanda says:

Terrible pick. She has no sense of style. She SOMETIMES look ok on the red carpet but let’s be honest- only thanks to her stylist. And this doesn’t happen very often recently. It seems like another popularity contest. They put her name wherever they can. But to be fair- whole list seems like a joke.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      +1

    • Etheldreda says:

Agree. At best she looks OK, but most of the time she looks awkward and uncomfortable. It doesn’t help that those fugly Dior ‘designs’ don’t even look good on Charlize or Marion, but it’s obvious she has no personal sense of style like, say, Cate Blanchett or even SJP.

I’m guessing that like most such awards, this was decided by the magazine’s advertisers rather than their fashion editors.

    • Josephine says:

All actors rely on their stylists for red carpet events, so the same could be said for everyone of them. I guess we should be looking more at their casual looks to determine if someone has a lot of personal style?

      • Etheldreda says:

I agree with you to a point. However, the stylist works for the star, not the other way around. The celeb always has the power to reject whatever the stylist is suggesting to them, and usually the stylist will suggest several different looks from which the star can choose. So even if a celeb has a stylist – and not all do – what they wear on the red carpet still reflects their own preferences.

And it’s not just the clothes themselves – it’s how you wear them. Even on the rare occassions she’s wearing something decent, Jennifer still looks meh. She just lacks that certain something. Which is fine, I suppose – she’s a great actress – but in taking millions to be a Dior girl, she can also be judged on her fashion sense or lack thereof.

  3. Jaderu says:

I’m dying at the thought of JLaw and Goop having a tea party!
    Did they invite Johnny Depp?
“When that day comes I shall futterwacken… vigorously.”

  4. Kiddo says:

“They ate scones in the garden” has to be a euphemism for something else. Where is Chris2? This is probably some nasty Brit talk that I can’t decipher. Translation, please.

  5. Rachel says:

    Definitely not.

  6. Tapioca says:

The sugar sprinkles dress should be burned, greenhouse effect be damned.

The others would look great on a proper model, but Jennifer just looks uncomfortable out of jeans and sneakers. She has a great figure for fashion, maybe not quite the “fierceness” to pull it off. It’s K-Stew all over again!

Maybe the “Best DRESSED”, given recent events, was awarded ironically?

  7. shayne says:

“They ate homemade scones in the garden!”
The air must have been filled with a lot of burping, farting & loud squealing.

  8. Elyse says:

    First Look: No
    Second: Maybe
    Third: Awkward
    Fourth: Hell NO!
    Fifth: Not quite
    Sixth: Ehm…
    Seventh: Sure
Overall, not a good pick at all. Sorry Jen, but Lupita would have been a better choice.

  9. Josefa says:

I don’t like JLaw’s fashion girl persona either. It seems so fabricated, and I’d like to have at least 1 female celeb who doesn’t enter the fashion game. One well-known celeb who nobody will pick on for her style choices because she simply doesn’t care.

I know this sounds weird coming from a woman, but I’ve always thought all the way you dress says about you, is how much you care about the way you dress.

    • CuriousCole says:

Agreed. Her label as a fashionista is odd, since Jennifer has a “Who cares?” attitude with many other aspects of Hollywood demands. She did better without Dior and seemed more comfortable when she wasn’t slaughtering the pronunciation of “haute couture” in red carpet interviews. It feels so phony when she makes an appearance at Fashion Week shows. And it’s unnecessary – she’s so talented and not every actress needs to be obsessed with clothes.

  10. mimif says:

    Oops wrong spot. Hi mom!

  11. serena says:

Not a good pick at all. Usually her style is hit or miss, mostly miss imo.

  12. Celia says:

I have a feeling Glamour chose her for the attention she brings since her name is such clickbait especially these days.

I mean, she admits herself that she doesn’t get fashion and just wears whatever her stylist tells her to wear.

    • lucy2 says:

I agree, and ditto for Stewart last year (really? Miss dirty jeans and Chucks?). I wish Calvin Klein would give Jennifer a deal instead of Dior, their clothes look way better on her.

  13. Nessa says:

This girl has no style. None. No steez whatsoever! I do not understand the hype around her. She is a servicable actress (she was good in Winter’s bone, and I do like her as Katniss). She has a good personality, but is super try-hard!!! She is clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed. And the style thing kills me. She has millions of dollars and every designer at her disposal, and she still doesn’t have it. I just don’t get it. At this point, I obviously never will, because she is the most popular actress out there.

  14. annie says:

She’s an ok choice I guess. There are much better picks for it though. Better then Miss. I’m INCREDIBLY honest and real!’ from last year. I’m sure her wonderful fans are taking a break from sending twigs racist hate messages to sending Jenny some death threats for stealing the “queen of fashion’s” cover as we speak…

  15. Someonestolemyname says:

The looks above are not great ….but ……

…..All I see when I look at her, is JLAW on her Oscar night in that Beautiful cream colored gown, tripping gracefully up the stairs to collect her Oscar.

That’s how I always see her, no matter what else she wears. That was a moment when she did everything right and looked stunning.

  16. Tig says:

To me, style is more a day in/day out thing- dressing for the random event is just that. She needs to get away from Dior for sure- she never looked better than that red Calvin Klein from Oscars 2(??) years ago. That being said, she’s 23, and the Glamour UK voters are prob in 20s/30s, so her day to day style reflects their taste, hence their winner.

  17. Alyce says:

I really like Jennifer, but a fashionista she is not. Don’t agree with their pick at all!

  18. Veronica says:

What, really? Talk about your ultimate ass kiss move. Her street style isn’t too awful to me – nothing fantastic but wearable – but the red carpet crap Dior’s been throwing her way is practically a punchline at this point. (How much of that is her fault and how much of that is the stylist/Dior is another issue altogether.)

  19. magpie says:

JLaw has no style whatsoever when left to her own devices. Don’t get me wrong, I like JLaw, but fashion girl she is not. Someone who I don’t like but have to admit has Great style is Jessica Alba.

  20. jbap says:

To be fair to J-Law, she’s dressing (or being dressed) much better these days – all those pics are from 2013 or before. However, she’s not and I suspect will never be a real fashion girl – which is fine, given her acting talent and personality, but I agree with Josefa above that it’s a pity that she’s being forced into that mould.

Incidentally, I’ve seen a few posts like Nessa’s above that assume that J-Law isn’t the sharpest. That always seems strange to me – she’s obviously hyper on a semi-permanent basis, and immature and maybe a little careless at times (e.g. the naked photos), but her interviews and career choices always suggest to me that she’s very smart, in an intuitive sense at least.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Career moves could be down to having excellent agents and managers.
She seems like a nice enough young woman though.
