Benedict Cumberbatch steps out in London, talks about Alan Turing’s sexuality

cumberbatch tree

First off, Vanity Fair has a nice little mini-pictorial/spotlight on Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne in the Jennifer Lawrence issue. Eddie got two photos (including one with a basket full of puppies) while Benedict just got one photo – Benedict looking brooding and sexy in a tree. As one does. I have to say, if I came upon an alien-otter in a tree, I might freak out a little bit and not in a good way. Benedict was also out in London with Keira Knightley and Keira’s husband on Saturday night. I’m including some of those photos at the end of the post. A blonde woman is behind Benedict but I’m almost positive that’s his publicist. No secret girlfriend, eh? (Yes, I’m trolling.)

Meanwhile, Benedict has a lovely new interview with NME. It’s mostly about Alan Turing and how much Benedict loves all things Turing. You can tell he’s really proud of this film. I’m not sure how much you want me to discuss Benedict’s quotes about Turing? While I find Turing fascinating and I’m half in love with Benedict, the combination of Benedict talking about Turing is oddly anticlimactic. So you can read the full piece here and here are some highlights that I found interesting:

Benedict on the awards season buzz: “If it gets people to see the film, frankly, that is all I care about. It’s early days and very flattering of course but there are a lot of other extraordinary films and performances people haven’t seen yet. But if it creates an interest for people to see what all the fuss is about then that’s fantastic because our jobs as storytellers are made easier if there’s an audience. And more importantly for me, having had some experience with this man I really want his story to be known and our film to be a launching point for a proper celebration of Alan Turing.”

The comparisons of Sherlock and Alan Turing: “Well, I’m limited by who I am and what I look like but at the same time they’re utterly different people. Alan doesn’t swish around in a long coat with curly hair demonstrating how brilliant he is… He’s a very quiet, stoic, determined and different type of hero. He’s smart but an outsider because of the conditions of his personal life. As far as the similarity that he’s socially awkward… What you see in the film is an evolution in him which is humanising. That happens in some aspects with Sherlock but I didn’t read the script and think, ‘This is Sherlock in tweed’. I liked how uncompromising he was but that’s always a stong trait in strong characters. I have played stupid people as well. I want to point that out. So if anybody’s got any more stupid roles for me, great, bring ’em on!”

Approaching Turing’s homosexuality: “His sexuality is something contained that is expressed in the film but not shown explicitly. There is no heterosexuality expressed in the film. So what we show in his behaviour is sadly true to his story. He had to suppress his sexuality, make it private, make it something secret. When he talks about his sexuality in the film it shows his complete honesty, guilelessness, innocence. He was aware of the risks but at the same time wasn’t willing to cave in to the intolerance and potential permutations of confessing such a thing. Some people own him as martyr or as standard-bearer for a cause. I think he was just very true to himself, which is a form of martyrdom, but he didn’t make a political statement out of it.”

[From NME]

That’s an interesting way of saying it – “There is no heterosexuality expressed in the film.” They can’t make Turing an out-and-proud gay man because he wasn’t, but he didn’t live a blatant lie and Travolta his way through life either. There is no hetero caricature. There is an absence of heterosexuality. That’s fascinating.

Oh, and good news! Benedict is in the new issue of Flaunt Mag. I’ve seen some of the editorial on Tumblr, but I’m not going to cover it until the cover is released.

Here are some photos of Benedict out in London Saturday night. I can’t help it, you guys. I loathe his haircut.

“Is this where you want our dream treehouse built, PunkyMomma?”
    Yes, My Otter, yes . . .

  2. Joanie says:

That tree photo is odd. I want to shout at him, “Get out of that tree in your fancy clothes!” Lol.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Love him. New haircut and all.

  4. Chris2 says:

I never knew anything about Türing til I read Cryptomomicon, which fascinated me. (Still don’t know if it’s true that the name and logo “Apple” is in his memory/honour…..hope it’s so!). Def will see this film, good choice in Cumberbatch.

    • Blankverse says:

From Wiki page on Turing: The logo of Apple Computer is often erroneously referred to as a tribute to Alan Turing, with the bite mark a reference to his death. Both the designer of the logo and the company deny that there is any homage to Turing in the design of the logo. Stephen Fry has recounted asking Steve Jobs whether the design was intentional, saying that Jobs’ response was, “God, we wish it were.”

      • Chris2 says:

        Thanks Blankverse!
I dishonour both Turing and Jobs when I forget I can in fact look this kind of thing up on the interweb.
(I guess the apple’s about the Genesis tale of Tree of Knowledge and all that, then)

    • Knels says:

Cryptonomicon is a great book! And while Turing made a small cameo, the way Stephenson described the founding of modern computing was fabulous.

      • Chris2 says:

        Knels
It’s brilliant! It made such an impression I swiftly read all his other books….good god the man has a brain the size of Yorkshire.

I was well prepared, thanks to Stephenson, for reading comparatively pedestrian fiction about the Enigma decryption at Bletchley Park in WWII. Thrilling stuff.
        🙂

  5. MissMary says:

I can’t quite grok what they’re aiming for with the tree pic (usually, you see that sort of shot for boy bands or very young actors) but otherwise… I do like a good, brooding ‘Batch, lol.

    • Stef Leppard says:

I think they’re aiming for “fancy Kellan Lutz.”

    • MissMary says:

I don’t think he’s Lutzy enough to pull it off, ngl, lol. Though I did read some folks speculating it had to do with Turing’s mode of death (the whole apple with cyanide thing) but I don’t think that’s an apple tree and it’d be in bad taste if that’s what they were going for.

    • Encumbered says:

I would have liked seeing him get up that tree….and down.

  6. Alex says:

”Travolta his way through life” ! Brilliant.

  7. lower-case deb says:

get out of the tree! you’re a dragon not an elf!

    • Maria says:

      Maybe he’s Oberon?

      • MissMary says:

Okay now THAT I want to see. Hamlet sounds awesome, but someone do Midsummer Night’s Dream and make him Oberon.

      • Camil says:

Hell yeah, a Midsummer Night’s Dream production only with British male actors to play EVERY character (even female ones ) LOL

      • sigh((s)) says:

Hiddles would be a good Puck. A very tall one, but a good one. Or Oberon. Cumby would be a great Bottom.

      • MissMary says:

@sigh((s)) Well, he DID get his start as Bottom, iirc. Maybe he should return to his roots in the theatre!

      • icerose says:

I would like them to appear as Pyramus and Thisbe. Tom would make an adorable Thisbe.

      • lower-case deb says:

        Oberon! with the singing!
yesterday i watched the opera version of Midsummers Night’s Dream… amazing.

      • MissMary says:

@icerose: Omg. This is my new otp, lol. Tom and Benedict as Pyramus and Thisbe.

      • Camil says:

I want them in A Midsummer Night’s Dream as Oberon and Titania: Cumberon and Hiddlestania. Redmayne could play Puck and as our special guest Chris Hemsworth as Bottom LOL.

In my production, of course, will be a lot of nude bodies.

  8. Rusty machine says:

    But that coat is amazing.

    • FingerBinger says:

I like it too. It’s probably cashmere.

      • sigh((s)) says:

Which is going to get snagged on that tree. Get out of the tree, benedict!

      • Andrea says:

The coat on him IS amazing. Sadly, if it is cashmere, I am allergic and would have to not snuggle too tightly to him. ha

      • icerose says:

Judging from the way the arms crease it looks like cashmere but they do make a cashmere simulation no which works for people who are allergic to wool.

    • frisbeejada says:

It’s a coat designed to be wrapped around another person and snuggled in. I wouldn’t mind volunteering, you know for the sake of public interest as I am not allergic to cashmere…

  9. Felice says:

I like his Flaunt photos. He has some pecs on him *hides in corner*

The movie is very well done and honestly one of his greatest performances. I do agree that this buzz is not bad for the box office but you never know which way the academy will swing.

  10. Stef Leppard says:

“if I came upon an alien-otter in a tree, I might freak out a little bit and not in a good way.”

Uh-oh, Kaiser, is the bloom off the rose?

  11. Jh says:

Dude, who thought it was a good idea to put him in a tree with that hideous coat?
First thought was Michael Jackson and his tree climbing ridiculousness.

  12. Lilacflowers says:

Can we just talk about the picture of Eddie Redmayne and the dog for a second? He looks like he’s 12 years old. A cute 12 year old, but a 12 year old. It is a bit creepy.

  13. browniecakes says:

Empire magazine has a terrific interview with Benedict in the new issue. Can’t find a link for you. Busiest man is show business. Good pictures too.
The tree picture would be better if he didn’t hang on, lean over, and pop his collar. Looks lke a strong breeze is about to unseat him.

  14. allons-y alonso says:

The Imitation Game and 20,000 Days on Earth are on my ‘oh God, I so badly want to see this film’ list. Well done, Batch! My love for you equals my love of Nick Cave’s music – it’s a big deal.

  15. An says:

Looking forward to seeing the Imitation Game. A friend of mine, whose opinion I take very seriously, was very excited after seeing it.

Ben Walters at the Guardian wrote a great piece on it:

    http://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2014/oct/09/the-imitation-game-alan-turing-gay

    • icerose says:

That was the article everyone called the writer out on his use of the words queerness and gay culture. Try reading the comments after the article and to be honest it looks like the writer just put the readers backs up which does not help how they feel about the film, Saying the film brought gay culture to the multiplex was not only silly but untrue. I was surprised that this even appeared in the Guardian.
Having said that Variery is certainly on Ben’s side which should help the film along

      • An says:

Why were you surprised? The writer is part of their gay culture team. It seems by ‘mainstream,’ we’re talking the global UK-US main theater circuit, and there’s sadly not a lot out there.

I’m not taking the position that the author is correct, of course, just that it matched my hard-to-please friend’s take on it. I am in no position to judge the film yet as I haven’t seen it.

      • icerose says:

What about films like Brokeback Mountain, Priscilla Queen of the Dessert and Philadelphia. They were mainstream in the UK. We may not get a lot of mainstream films which deal with homosexuality but this was certainly not the first one.
If you read the comments that follow it seems I was not the only person who was surprised at the terminology used within the article. The discussion that followed was actually quite interesting. According to his profile Bob Walters covers cabaret, moving image, queer and DIY culture. So apparently queer culture not only includes LGBT to include anyone who does not fit into sexual norms because heaven forbid that anyone who is not a traditional heterosexual should see themselves as normal.
There was also quite a good discussion on the Pink News Facebook page as well which was focussed more on the film as opposed to queer culture.

      • An says:

Oh, he wasn’t saying it was the first one, just a more recent one. I do think you’re misreading his bio. Those are all separate topics he covers, man of many interests.

I wasn’t surprised by the terms, a lot of younger people in the community are using them, but I can see why older people wouldn’t go for it. The whole ‘reclaiming’ of anything is always a messy business.

I don’t do Facebook, but I am aware of Pink News. Unfortunately, their fact-checking policy and editing isn’t known for its quality, so I’m not one to haunt there.

  16. kri says:

God, he is amazing in that tree. (That is not a sentence one writes everyday!) As I’ve said before, he is so brilliant. And yes, otters do live in tress and wear lovely coats. We need him to model coats for someone!! London Fog? Burberry? Come on, coat people!! He is coat advert gold!

  17. Encumbered says:

    The Imitation Game

    Time: Tuesday 14 October 2014

    Location: Glasgow

    Venue: Cineworld Cinema

    http://www.bafta.org/scotland/whats-on/

    • Encumbered says:

And BC was checked at the airport headed to Glasgow, presumably for this event. Of course, that is stirring up crap because SH’s mum lives there. Another round of insanity!

      • Shannon says:

Wasn’t he seen on a plane to Edinburgh? That’s where SH’s mom lives.

      • Nic says:

For crying out loud, why does everything seemingly have to be dragged back to this bloody woman all the time. Who gives a s£&t if her mother lives there? It’s a bloody massive city that he’s said he loves visiting. There’s a possible multitude of reasons for being there which don’t have to include her tabloid baiting mother.

Edit: this rant isn’t directed at anyone in particular but I’m bored rigid of this bloody woman popping up in relation to him all the time.

      • Encumbered says:

        Correction: Edinburgh. Oops…

      • Shannon says:

Of course he could be there for another reason, NIc. Doesn’t TIG have a premeier there as well? MIght be doing press for that.

Curious- why is she tabloid bating?

        IS SH Scottish?

      • Nic says:

Oh that comment (if that was indeed what she said, the whole article was shit), ‘watch this space, who knows’. If she did say it. UGH.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

TIG is showing on Tuesday. BC might have press commitments today and tomorrow that we aren’t aware of.
Does he have family there too?

      • Linz says:

        Another Scotland screening of TIG..

        The Imitation Game (Edinburgh)

        Time: Thursday 16 October 2014

        Location: Edinburgh

        Venue: Edinburgh Cineworld (Fountain Park)
        The Imitation Game

English mathematician and logician, Alan Turing, helps crack the Enigma code during World War II.

        http://www.bafta.org/scotland/whats-on/

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

We can’t be totally sure SH’s mum actually does live in Edinburgh.
We only have a tabloid story to go on

      • MissMary says:

Looks like connection in Edinburgh to Glasgow and just doing the premiere circuit and press up there. But people aren’t going to be happy with that–it *has* to be about the SgF, right? *snort* I’m waiting for the rumor that he only took this role so he could be with her. IDK how that’d work but i’m sure someone is brewing it up right now.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

        MissMary
How about the rumour of the day??
SH is pregnant and BC is in Scotland to ask for her hand in.marriage ??
That’s one of my particular favourites.

      • MissMary says:

        ROTFLMFAO

        Seriously.

First of all…what year is this? Did I wake up in 1925 or something? No, he’s not asking for her hand in marriage in front of her family or something. And the whole pregnancy thing is b.s. It started because someone made a snarky comment on EB about her dress not being form fitting and making her look pregnant. It’s about as credible as the rumor that he had KB in Italy/Greece with him to propose over the summer.

Look at it logically: There is a BAFTA screen in Glasgow on Tuesday, a BAFTA screening in Edinburgh on Thursday, and a flight from Heathrow to Edinburgh with a connection to Glasgow today. The man is working. He’s promoting the Hell out of a film he’s passionate about and is getting some good traction under it in reviews and premieres (and no matter what EB’s posters are saying, YES actors do these BAFTA screenings too when they can/want to). He’s not on some sex holiday to propose to SH, he’s not sneaking away to visit his SGF’s mom.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

        MissMary
There’s even a way of justifying the rumour..

SH didn’t go to after show drinks(Richard lll theatre trip with AS and BC),or afterparty on Wednesday because now she’s pregnant she doesn’t drink and is taking extra care of herself!!
        It all makes PERFECT SENSE!
I wasn’t aware drinking was mandatory at any gathering….

      • MissMary says:

*raises brow* So if his mom didn’t drink, is she pregnant, too? I’ve been pregnant… you can go to events where there is drinking and it won’t harm the baby if you’re standing near someone with a glass of wine or a cocktail. It’s really ridiculous–people did the same thing with Olivia, too, trying to claim she was pregnant and that’s why she didn’t go on a location shoot with him for some show or other, and it was all b.s.

      • Tara says:

Lol, MissMary. A 1.5 day sex holiday. Wooo, smashing!

      • MissMary says:

LOL if you do it right, you don’t even need the .5 day (I kid, I kid… you always want the .5 day).

      • solanaceae (Nighty says:

Ouch, I’ve been pregnant all my life then, since I don’t drink alcoholic drinks… OH my!! Had no idea…

        *eyerolling*

      • sigh((s)) says:

Hey nighty! Missed you around here…

    • Nic says:

Some woman he’s not even been photographed making eye contact with and people are seriously discussing the possibility of pregnancy based on one stupid attempt at a joke on a dubious blog? C’mon people, this ridiculous level of talk about this woman has to have SOME limits surely? This is just too insane now.

      • MissMary says:

Oh, they already have them engaged, pregnant, and I’m sure by tomorrow they’ll be divorced and having hate sex with low level royals. the intensity with which some people want this to be a Harlequin romance is astonishing.

      • Megan says:

I can’t get over how dumb his fans are. Can’t they just be happy that he is doing well career-wise without all the fan fiction of him and one of his friends? Good grief.

      • Lindy79 says:

I agree. Whatever you think about the situation, the talk online about it is ridiculous and has gone so far beyond a line of decency, it’s a distant blot on the horizon.

Lets just get back to discussing how he looks hanging out in the Magic Faraway Tree with Moonface and Mr Saucepan Man

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

Any news on what he’s in Edinburgh for?
Googled for news and got the HB pictures from Saturday. Nothing else popped up for recent

      • Linz says:

        @Kazlock.

Just because he flew to Edinburgh, doesn’t mean he is there. He could be in Glasgow right now.

He is in Scotland for work. There is a screening of TIG in Glasgow on Tuesday and a screening in Edinburgh on Thursday.

      • MissMary says:

Kazlock: Just because he’s in Scotland doesn’t mean it’s a super secret gf mess. There’s demonstrably TIG events there, he’s pushing the movie hard, and that’s that. Next we hear, it’ll be some promo stuff for TIG.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

Look’s like he’s back in London. Someone posted a tweet that he’d been seen in Botanical Gardens,Edinburgh. Then later today another that he was in London

      • Linz says:

        @Kazlock.

“Think I just saw Benedict Cumberbatch at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.”
Tweet was posted 3 hours ago.

” My uncle saw Benedict Cumberbatch in London but was too busy to stop and get an autograph?????!!????!!! He needs to re-think his priorities”
Tweet was posted an hour ago..

        Hmmm? Something isn’t right. lol
That Tweet does not confirm that he is back in London.

      • Tara says:

Yeah, I believe the gardens one. But, the tweeter of that is going to get a mountain of questions about who BC was with. Hope they’re ready Lol.

      • Linz says:

        Edinburgh guy said this:
“Definitely was him, saw him second time as he was leaving and he tipped his hat :-)”

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

        @Linz
2nd Tweet…did they actually mean they’d seen him today?
Thought he was in Scotland for BAFTA screening tomorrow.
        Flying visit!Strange

      • Tara says:

Kazlock- They meant they saw him in Edinburgh as he was leaving the Botanical Gardens today. He’s still in Scotland.

The girl’s uncle who thought he saw BC in London must have been mistaken.

      • MissMary says:

Sounds like a mini-break before the next round of promos and filming!

(And since Edinburgh and Glasgow aren’t too far apart, makes sense he’s staying in a city he’s remarked on being fond of in the past, *before* the Sg mess started–just my two cents of snark lol).

      • Linz says:

        @Tara
        All of that..

  19. MRS CUMBERBATCH says:

That’s an interesting way of saying it – “There is no heterosexuality expressed in the film.” This might be Cumby’s way of reassuring the audience that the script stays true to Turing’s life with regards to Keira Knightley’s character, Joan Clarke. Clarke was engaged to Turing at one point though their relationship was emotional and mental never physical.

  20. Koodles83 says:

Oh that flaunt video….that man can model a coat like no other:)!!! Shamelessly purrs. And watches video again.

  21. Kar says:

So excited for Benedict to play Turing… I go to Benedict’s alma mater, the University of Manchester, and Turing is a huge part of this university’s past and legacy! He worked here for a number of years, and there are several buildings, plaques etc named after him!

    • MissMary says:

Ngl, I almost went to Manchester because of Turing. My student visa didn’t get approved in time *sob*.

      • Tara says:

Oh, that sucks, MissMary! Did you end up going someplace you liked, at least?

      • MissMary says:

LOL yeah, but to this day, *mumblesomething* years later, I still have twinges of bitterness about not going to Manchester. I went to a school here stateside that had a wonderful program in my desired area of study, so it wasn’t all horrible!

      • Kar says:

MissMary, it’s okay, it’s too rainy and cold here most of the time! But the math/comp. sci/eng fields are all brilliant here, but I am in a totally unrelated field of study. I’m just hoping for Benedict Cumberbatch to show up on campus someday!!

  22. Koodles83 says:

Pregnancy rumors?…..dear lord the guy hasn’t even been in one country longer than 2 months at a time. Another reason I think the whole girlfriend thing is a hoax. He just doesn’t have time to start a relationship to begin with.

    • Bee says:

Who would want to be with a man who works as much as he does? There could be never enough time for the things a relationship needs, like conversations, having breakfast together, lazy sundays, long walks? Did I forget something..? Oh yes, and reading poetry to each other, of course.

  23. Lindy79 says:

I’m really looking forward to this film, not just because of BC, I like the entire cast

Not even touching all the other personal crap. Its odd from every angle.

    • Tara says:

The cast really is great. I absolutely love Mark Strong and would watch him in anything 🙂

    • MissMary says:

My SO knows I’m a fan of BC’s work and is teasing me about wanting to see this movie but I don’t care, lol. I love Turing and his story is so complex and moving that seeing it on the screen is going to make me sob, I’m sure.

  24. Ellen says:

He is in a relationship. It is with a man called Tom who likes velvetine Rabbits. When they’re both out together one of them has to wear the invisibility cloak stolen from Another man called Daniel.

  25. anon says:

Hi all. I have to admit that I’m the snarky one who made the pregnancy comment on eB. I had just seen a far away shot of the floral dress which looked less than flattering from far away. Didnt mean to create a shitstorm. Sorry-my bad.

    Lol

    • MissMary says:

LOL It really did get some legs, didn’t it?

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

The astrology thing’s been going on for days!!Make’s absolutely no sense at all.
        The polls are fun though.
Anything else to put him in London?

      • Linz says:

        @Kazlock.

I really don’t think he is back in London. I think it was a case of mistaken identity..

    • Nic says:

I don’t think anyone with any sense even noticed the comment. I think the most insane thing about that site is all the fools talking endlessly about starsigns. Jesus.

      • MissMary says:

        lolwut? Are you serious?

My partner checked that tumblr out today (braver than I am of late lol) and said someone named Seynorita on twitter is apparently behind a lot of the “omg SH” rumors so… grain of salt and all that. I told SO I didn’t want to dig into that but they’re welcome to do so. I just want the grossness to fade out .

      • Tara says:

I’m not ever going to go on that eB site based off what you guys/girls have said about it. Seems like a total waste of time of made up stuff. 🙂

Pregnant, living together, married ay caramba! Lol.

What’s got you grossed out, MissMary?

      • Linz says:

        @MissMary.
There are some crazies out there.
Seynorita is the person who Tweeted Benedict’s friends and Co-Stars, and Tweeted The Mirror.

There is another person on Twitter BirdLola888. They grill everyone who sees/meets Benedict. They are grilling the guy who saw Benedict at the Botanic Gardens..

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

Have any of you read the High Life article?
My friend says she’s sure BC mentions having family either in or nest Edinburgh.
She can’t find the magazine to check

      • MissMary says:

@Tara: Grossness more along the lines of the wtfery and the super stalking, now encouraged by the papers in Edinburgh.

@Kazlock: He’s mentioned in the past enjoying the city and it being a favorite place to visit, even before “SH-gate”.

  26. Kazlock 1307 says:

Botanical guy says BC was with a woman.Tall with brunette hair.
Oh ****!! Have I got to leave the land of denial now MissMary?

    • Linz says:

      @Kazlock.
      JFC!!!
Please, don’t put words in his mouth.

Here is what he said. : “About same height as him, may have had heeled boots on. She also had a hat on, but I think brunette, was looking at him more!”
He also said: “Also no hand holding that I saw”

I “THINK” brunette and about the same height as him, she may have had heeled boots on. Is not any sort of confirmation that it is/was Sophie.

    • MissMary says:

LOL No, he said “Maybe brunette”. *shrug* I’m not going to hold my breath. If he’s with Sophie, there will be other sightings and not just a guy who saw him and he “tipped his hat to” on the way out. And “no hand holding” despite the other tweeter trying to lead him into saying so. Maybe it was SH, maybe it was another woman. And he didn’t tell if she was brunette or not so… *shrug* Who knows.
ETA: All of what Linz said. If you want to be pragmatic about it, Sophie is NOt the only brunette in the UK, either. Coincidences are often people looking for connections where there are none. But if he is with her, then this is a really weird way to go about a relationship IMHO. But I’m not them so if it works for them, alright.

  27. Encumbered says:

Well now… The dots do seem to be connecting and I, for one, am attempting to bow out gracefully (snicker, snort!). Twitter – @soorploom

    • Kazlock 1307 says:

      It’s all weird!Sometimes I’m absolutely certain they’re a couple.Then I look at it and don’t see it at all!!

      • Linz says:

        @Encumbered.

“The dots do seem to be connecting.”

How so? Twitter guy did not confirm that it was Sophie. He couldn’t even confirm the woman’s hair color..

I am having a couple of issues with his “story.”
“He didn’t want to be seen, as he was walking fast.”
How would he know that he did not want to be seen?

“It was raining quite heavy, prob another reason to speed-walk.” Was he walking fast because he didn’t want to be seen? Or because it was raining quite heavy? Which one is it?

Honestly, the guy kind of sounds like a creeper. He says he saw Benedict earlier, then says he saw him a second time, as he was leaving. Did he follow Benedict and the “lady” around? Was he waiting for them to leave?

      • Tara says:

He’ll be in Scotland most of the week. If SH is there with him, I’m sure we’ll get more sightings of them.

I hate to say it, but I think it was her.

Linz- the tweeter’s behavior seems normal. He saw a famous guy and paid attention to him. He wasn’t paying attention to the girl, and couldn’t describe her other than tall and possibly brunette. That’s seems reasonable.

BC could have been walking fast to avoid the rain and b/c he didn’t want to be seen. *shrugs*.

      • MissMary says:

I think he was seen with a woman. Was it SH? Who knows, at this point. Maybe. Maybe it was a private tour guide (like he had in Boston for several sites), maybe it was a friend, maybe it was Niece Emily (since the tweeter wasn’t sure of hair color) or maybe it was a chick he picked up at the airport lol.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

If they are dating/fwb whatever..they have no chemidtry. And a strange way of hiding whatever it is.
Pictured openly at FO.Then months of secret gf crap. After “reveal” in the Fail they could have been seen about with each other, without actually speaking about it.
TIG premiere was pathetic!Walk out of the hotel, red carpet alone(which was a crap way if hiding).

      • Tara says:

Oh, no doubt it could have been any lady. He’s got friends everywhere, haha.

But, if I were a betting person, I’d put money down that SH will be seen with him in Scotland this week. For the love of Pete, can’t we just get some sort of confirmation? Then we could just move along…Lol.

      • Renee says:

Here we go again…LOL…I wish they would get papped so we could all move on from the “are they or aren’t they.” I’m just gonna go with they’re together and move on. Not sure what else to think and it seems like the easiest answer to explain her presence in his life. I think they’re weird but whatever.

  28. Kazlock 1307 says:

I could be biased(can’t stand the pretentious bitch),but something just seems ‘off’ with the whole thing.

    • MissMary says:

I don’t want to Hiddlesbomb the thread but there was a situation in his fandom a year or so ago that was pretty similar. It all came to nothing.

      • Green Eyes says:

Which TH Secret Girlfriend was that? Not JA? ‘Cos she worked REALLY hard at not being a SSG.

      • MissMary says:

Sian Clifford. She was never a “SG”. She was a long time friend who was his plus one at several events and fans had a frothing frenzy about it.

      • Tara says:

But wasn’t that the same lady that went on vacation with Tom earlier this year, MissMary? lol. (sidenote-I’ve just started getting into him. Saw Only Lovers Left Alive a month ago and really liked him in it)

Even if BC and SH are dating, doesn’t mean they’re necessarily getting married or anything 🙂 I can’t see him doing that for a few more years…

      • MissMary says:

No, that was Jane Arthy he took to Bora Bora. Sian Clifford was an old school friend (uni) and an actress who didn’t quite make the big time.

As workaholic as BC is, I’d legit be surprised if he “settled down” (either marriage or ltr) for a while.

      • Tara says:

        ah, got it. Thanks.

  29. Marcy says:

I guess my only question would be how do we determine if they have “chemistry”? Maybe they have a more reserved posture in public but behind closed doors another story. I think of couples who folks thought always had “the look” and now they’re not together.

I think they are together. But I get the feeling BC doesn’t want to rock his Cumbercollective boat. He has a level of adoration that I haven’t
seen in a while. I bet it’s addictive and he’s reluctant to see it cool.

    • MissMary says:

I think so many people are saying he’s not “acting” like it’s a romance because he’s been very public about being touchy feeling not just with friends (see pics of him and Zachary Quinto) but also romantic partners (pics of him and Olivia, Anna James… Even with Lydia “it’s not dating” Hearst, he had his hand on her back, elbow, stood next to her at events they both went to separately). So people are extrapolating.

      • Tara says:

I like seeing old pictures of him and Olivia. They usually look so happy 🙂

We might see that if/when he and SH go to an event and actually get photographed together. Lol. Just have to wait and see.

      • MissMary says:

I’d be surprised, just based on seeing pics of her from before this… She doesn’t seem the type. She reminds me of Anna James like that–no pic of her looked pleased. She always had Resting Bitch Face ™ on and lots of folks commented how dour she looked for such a pretty woman.

      • Tara says:

I was just going to say, maybe she has bitchy resting face. haha. I have that too, unfortunately. If I don’t make an effort to smile, people think I’m angry. So I can’t hold that against them.

      • MissMary says:

Oh, word, I’m the same way lol. People always think I’m angry with them. IDK, I’d like to think I’d make an effort to smile for an official pic at an event though. But I know me–I’d make a derp face and that’d be the one the tabloids ran with.

      • sigh((s)) says:

It’s weird because he’s usually so handsy and warm and fuzzy with EVERYONE, and she seems to be the exception, but they’re (possibly) dating?

      • MissMary says:

@sigh((s)) that’s what keeps making me side-eye. Not being private (though middle school antics, if they are indeed dating, do make me smdh) but the lack of open affection. Even with Lydia Hearst, whom he acknowledged to be seeing but not in a relationship with, he was demonstrative. Even at events they did not “arrive at” together but were at together, pics and all. He’s looked more “affectionate” with fans than he has with sh.
I mean, people change and we don’t know him from Adam’s off ox but it just seems weird. *shrug* They don’t keep me in the loop, though, so who knows.

  30. Marcy says:

Or he just wants to keep his private life private.

    Yeah, probably that.

    • Tara says:

I think it’s that, exactly. He probably wouldn’t mind if the adoration cooled a bit if he could go out without being stopped, tweeted about/asked for photos, etc.

    • Nic says:

His private life is private but he’s a public figure. Just be himself with who he wants to be because it’s nobody’s business. This crap won’t go away so just be you and ignore it the best you can. Go about your life is the best advice I could give him and this has nothing to do with her or anyone else he knows.
I also don’t think he has any interest in keeping a ‘cumbercollective’ happy. He appreciates support but I imagine he’d be pretty happy to see it ‘cool’ by quite a few degrees.

      • MissMary says:

He’s always been appreciative of his fan’s enjoyment of his work but very open about how it makes him uncomfortable when people conflate him with characters he plays or approach him after he’s set boundaries (“No, not right now, I’m with friends” for example, the infamous ‘flip off’ pic from Malaysia (I think it was Malaysia?)). I really don’t think he (or Karon) would insist upon keeping some weird Disney Prince image at the expense of his personal freedom just to keep a handful of fans happy.

      • Marcy says:

Haha Nic I’m sure there are some aspects of the fandom he’d like to see in a deep freeze.

      • sigh((s)) says:

This. If you’re going to be a couple, just be a couple. If you want to keep the whole thing under wraps because you’re both such special snowflakes then don’t go anywhere together.

      • An says:

Sigh((s))-I do think I hold unpopular opinions on this particular subject, but it’s his life. I wouldn’t view it as a ‘special snowflake’ thing at all if they’re simply trying it on but are not very serious, given his somewhat awful fanbase and clickbait status. No major trades are really on it, and why should she become a full part of the circus if it fizzles out quickly?

I would feel differently if she was already a presence in the public eye, of course.

      • An says:

Oh, I should add I don’t think they’re dating for a few reasons. But the edit thing won’t take for me, sorry!

    • gg says:

A lot of people are thinking the secrecy is Sophie’s idea, because of this quote she gave in an interview when she was dating a “hot” young British artist. What does she think life would be like with an Oscar nominee/winner?

Still only 26, Shawcross recently sold a sculpture to Charles Saatchi for 26,000 pounds. Sophie is wary of talking about the relationship – ‘Won’t people think us an odious couple?’ she asks, genuinely concerned – and she would never want to piggyback on her boyfriend’s success: ‘He’s much more famous than I am,’ she insists.

      • Tara says:

An- Well said, totally agree with ya. Why don’t you think they’re dating? I like hearing everyone’s opinions on this 🙂

      • sigh((s)) says:

Eh. She obviously wasn’t concerned about them being odious when she was in multiple articles with her then boyfriend, as well as posing for lots of pics with him at events and such.
And if she wanted to be so private, then why is she coming out of hotels where they’re doing PRESS JUNKETS and on red carpets? Goes to the French Open with a heavy pap presence? That doesn’t scream “private” to me.
Joseph Gordon Levitt’s girlfriend? Actually private.

      • MissMary says:

Her comments in the old articles strike me as disingenuous, mainly because they seem like a “she doth protest too much” situation, but that may be my own POV since I’m not a fan of hers (nothing to do with BC, I just find her performance art tedious, from what I’ve seen, and her interviews pretentious. she may be a very lovely person IRL).

And YES re Jgl’s gf. And Daniel Radcliffe, too. They have relationships with these women who have their own lives and careers, they take them to events, and no one makes a fuss because they just are what they are.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

Someone sent the guy from botanical garden’s a picture of SH.He said he couldn’t be sure to be honest. And no hand holding, didn’t seem romantic.
Almost as tall as BC,but could have worn boots with heel.Could be brunette, but had a hat on.
So no definate proof it was SH.It could be any number of his friends/family

  31. Megan says:

Oh good grief, can we stop taking everything said on twitter as truth and legit sources? It’s twitter people. Anyone can make up anything. Enough with the endless speculation.
