Reese Witherspoon in Stella McCartney at the BFI LFF: lovely or meh?

Don’t you know who she is?! Reese Witherspoon is an American Citizen, standing on British soil and an American citizen does hold their own umbrella! Maybe some tea-pouring Englishman will hold his own umbrella, but not an American citizen!

Here are photos of Reese at the BFI London Film Festival yesterday, promoting Wild. I think Wild is going to be her big Oscar hopeful – she’s been talking about Wild a lot more than The Good Lie. I’m including photocall pics plus premiere pics. For the (rainy!) premiere, Reese wore this black Stella McCartney gown which I’m still trying to figure out. I mean, it’s Stella McCartney so I have to hate it flat-out, right? I rarely like anything Stella puts her name on. But I don’t think this is flat-out awful, it’s just trying to do too much all at once. I don’t get the sheer panel at the waist plus the faux reptile bust plus the animal print at the collar. WTF? Something nice: Reese’s styling looks great. Nice bouncy blow-out, great makeup. She must have been so pissed about the rain!

For the photocall, she wore a really boring Giambattista Valli. I really don’t get why Valli’s designs are considered interesting or whatever. Most of the time, the dresses are either twee or bland as hell.

As for her 2013 American Citizen Arrest, Reese was asked about in London (ooh, I bet that pissed her off too!) and she said:

“I think it was a moment where people realized that I wasn’t exactly what they thought I was. I guess maybe we all like to define people by the way the media presents them, and I think that I showed I have a complexity that people didn’t know about. It’s part of human nature. I made a mistake. We all make mistakes. The best you can do is say sorry and learn from it and move on.”

[Via HuffPo]

Yeah, she wasn’t drunk and rude, she just has “complexity”! I’m enjoying Reese’s passive voice here – “people realized that I wasn’t exactly what they thought I was” NOT “people realized that I wasn’t the adorable America’s Sweetheart, which is an image I helped create and perpetuate.” But at least she says she made a mistake and apologizes. Hey, that’s more than most people do.

So much makeup lately. Clown face. She doesn’t need it.

  2. Luciana says:

Lol at the first picture!!!!! So bizarre!!!!

Anyway, THE American citizen looks amazing in Stella Mccartney. Perfect makeup and hair. Absolutely gorgeous! The second ensemble is a disaster. Ill fitting and boring.

  3. Abbott says:

With all her PR ho strolling… that Clooney guy doesn’t seem so bad right now.

    • Kiddo says:

Bite your tongue Abbott. BITE it now.

    • CTgirl says:

Reese has controlled her image with an iron fist from day one. The idea that the media presented her as anything is laughable. Oh Reese, accept that fact that your facade dropped for a night and don’t blame it on anyone else. Even the media. The media didn’t pour those drinks down your gullet.

      • vavavoom says:

True! And it’s not even the drinks that created the whole situation. It was her attitude that she had more power than a police officer who caught her husband doing something illegal (not to mention dangerous – he could have killed someone). The drinks just relaxed her ‘persona’ and let the real Reese shine through.

I don’t hate the Stella either. I wouldn’t say I like it, but not hating her designs is an improvement.

i thought she got way too much cr*p for that incident. so what she mouthed off? she wasn’t driving drunk. not her fault people want to think she’s all american and sweet as apple pie. every star has a pr image, hers was all-american southern sweetheart.

    • Candy Love says:

Well it is her fault. She helped create that girl next door image for herself just like Juila Roberts, Jeniffer A, Goop, Jeniffer G, Sandra Bullockex…

She had no problems taking a jabs at Blake Lively at the MTV awards when nude photo of Blake come out. She was high and mighty then but now that somthing happen to her its everybody makes mistakes.

    • mellie says:

Agree…alot of stars/athletes have done much, much worse.

It’s not just that. If I’m remembering right, her side was spreading rumors that the cop that arrested them didn’t do his job right (like he targeted them, or something like that)–and that’s why the cops released the video of her drunk American ass. Second, when she went back to LA, she had an Atlanta PD hat on with the smuggest, smirky-smirk face for the paps. Girlfriend ain’t sorry. Sure, she apologized, but she brushed it off as something that happened when she drinks. NO. She’s had bitchy rumors for years, and this gave them solid proof. And I’ll never forget what her (drunk) husband said to her when she was mouthing off to the cop — “Not tonight, Reese.”. Which says a whole lot about how she is in private.

And honestly–she hardly got any flak. No tabloids are printing up stories about how she’s drunk and a horror for months on end. She’s had to answer questions about that night two or three times–and the first time was during her apology. No journalists are calling her an alcoholic. The media isn’t talking trash about how she’s a horrible parent for getting drunk–questioning her parenting abilities. She got off pretty easy, imo.

      • littlestar says:

I agree with all of this. The cop who arrested her wasn’t even a jerk, he had no idea who she was and treated her like he would have anyone else. And no, she did not receive enough backlash in my opinion. She’s still a smug entitled *sshole. I know it’s petty of me, but I so hope she’s not nominated for another Oscar. She’s a crappy one-note actress who shouldn’t have won her first Oscar. It’s unfair how people like her continue to be successful in the world.

    • snowflake says:

i just don’t see what she did as being so bad. all these movie stars are entitled, spoiled people. even i myself am a beyotch from time to time. who hasn’t said something stupid when you were drunk? yes, she sounds like a stuck-up, rich beyotch. but she’s not the only one in hollywood. i think people are just mad b/c they bought her nce nice image. now ray rice, chris brown, those are people that deserve some hate. someone with an entitled attitude is not a big of a deal to me. if one of these hollywood stars were actually down to earth, nice people IN REALITY (not their image), then I would be shocked. these stars are all actors, portraying an image their PR team crafted for them and thought would sell well to the public. so she broke character, bfd in my opinion. no offense to anyone, you’re entitled to your opinion as well.

She needs to always have bangs, always. She just has one of those faces that need it.

  7. Kiddo says:

I think I’ve only ever liked about a dress or two from Stella McCartney, and that gown isn’t one of them.

  8. kibbles says:

I don’t like her anymore and I have felt that way for a while even before her arrest last year. I really liked her when I was a teenager and she was at the top of her game. She wasn’t quite A-list yet but she was in a lot of great projects. Even if they weren’t Oscar bait, they were fun and allowed Reese to showcase her talent – Freeway, Cruel Intentions, Pleasantville, Election, Legally Blonde. Except for her Oscar for Walk the Line everything went downhill after Legally Blonde. She became more Hollywood, more snobbish, more into making a quick paycheck than doing anything really interesting or artistic. Even though her image was very controlled until last year’s incident, I no longer had the same respect for her as an actress and as a public figure. Now she comes off as very snooty and fake. She’s lost that genuine quality she had when she was younger and it shows in her acting. She’s not as good of an actress as she was when she was in her 20s.

    • Kiddo says:

      I agree.

    • zinjojo says:

Totally agree. Used to like her; got sick of her crappy romcoms and other money grubbing vehicles and now I can’t stand her and don’t want to see any movie that she’s in. It’s like Tom Cruise; I no longer see an actor disappearing into a role, I just see a jerk for whom I’m not going to waste my time or money.

      • Jbean says:

Yeah I get that, talent-wise and project-wise, totally. But I DO think she looks good again here for the first time in…………

    • lucy2 says:

I just read an interview with her (Entertainment Weekly maybe?) where she sort of says the same thing about her career, her film choices, and the direction she wants to head into now. Her public image has changed, but I respect her decision to take different types of film roles, work on the producing end, etc. And at least she acknowledged the bad choices.

    • Pandy says:

Yeah, can’t really argue with you. Snotty and entitled.

    • JenniferJustice says:

I agree. I love her in “The Man in the Moon”. That might have been her first role ever – she was very young. But she had a humility about her then. She was not clamoring for the sexy sexy roles, even in her 20s. In fact, she seemed to play more down-to-earth, average girl roles, which she did really well. Once she became somewhat famous, however, she turned to the sexy sexy and sorry, but she doesn’t pull it off. She is not sexy. She actually has an awkward build. That and her super pointy chin make it difficult to accept her in “beautiful” roles. I know I’m going to get flak for ripping on a woman’s natural physical traits, but it is what it is. She was much more beleivable in the “girl next door” roles. At some point, all of it seemed to go to her head and she became hoighty. There have been blinds and rumors for decades about her being mean, diva-demanding, and belittling to the underlings. Now she’s trying to sell us her life-style and I just can’t. She isn’t classy, graceful, or admirable. There is nothing about her I envy and would want to aspire to.

      • kibbles says:

Another thing to remember is that she wasn’t always America’s Sweetheart. Take a look at old photos of Reese on her IMDB profile…There was a period when she was kind of gothic, rebellious, goofy…she was genuine and had more humility as you pointed out. I don’t expect her to stay that way forever. Angelina grew out of that phase. Most people do. That doesn’t mean people can’t remain grounded and down to earth as they mature and age.

    • GByeGirl says:

I loved her in Freeway and Election.

I was at the premiere last night. She looked amazing. She came out for a presentation before the film started along with Cheryl Strayed, Nick Hornby and a female producer (I think) whose name I can’t remember. She clearly thinks very highly of the film and good on her for moving into production and as the interviewer says, promoting films witth strong, complex female leads.

It was a miserable night and everyone had umbrellas so I don’t think there was anything diva-like about her being under an umbrella, especially knowing she was going on the stage pre-screening. She also stayed out for a while in the pouring rain to sign autographs, pose for photos etc. Oh and the film is really good!

  10. Eazypeazy says:

    She looks coked out

  11. RobN says:

I’ve always liked her, but these pictures look awful. The make-up is completely overdone and the SM dress is typically bad. The shorter dress isn’t so bad, but it looks kind of ill-fitting.

As for her comments, I think it’s tough when you end up in the America’s sweetheart role and you actually have a bit of an edge to you. It’s a real balancing between bringing in the money and opportunities and knowing that any breach of the image is twice as bad because of what the image is.

  12. Tig says:

I usually like her red carpet looks, and like this one as well. I’m late to the “Wild” party- just started the book, and look forward to the movie.

  13. notlistening says:

    She looks beautiful.

  14. Jbean says:

The Valli sucks but shit, she hasn’t looked good in a long ass time and that Stella McCartney’s blowing it out of the water! I’m sure the dress inspired the styling. Impressive! (or, lovely?)

  15. LAK says:

    Stella McCartney is so over-rated.
