Joaquin Phoenix takes his sweet-looking pit bull for a walk in LA: adorable?

I’m just writing about this Joaquin Phoenix photos because of the dog! I know you won’t mind. While I’ve known for a long time that Joaquin is an animal-rights activist, I didn’t know that he actually lived a quiet life in LA with at least one dog. Now that I’ve done some cursory research, I know he lives in LA with two dogs. One of them is this pit bull (or pit mix?) in these photos. The second dog looks like another pit or pit mix – go here to see. This puppy looks sweet to me. I know some people have an aversion to pits because of the belief that pits are more violent or whatever, but I’ve always believed it’s more about the dog-owner than the dog. Joaquin’s pit looks like a good dog… except maybe he/she is a bolter. I know that alert-eared dog face. That’s a face that says “take me off the leash, I want to chase after something!”

As for Joaquin’s future projects…the only thing he’s got coming out next year (so far) is that Woody Allen movie he did with Emma Stone. He also has Inherent Vice out this year, and some people think that the film is deserving of an Oscar campaign. Most of the reviews I’ve seen are more like “it’s a weirdly brilliant and messy film and it won’t win anything” though. As for the persistant rumors about Joaquin and Doctor Strange, the rumors were revisited on Friday with a new article on The Wrap. The Wrap’s sources claimed that Marvel still wanted Phoenix and he was still in the mix, but Joaquin’s rep went to The Wrap and said the Marvel talks are “dead dead dead. A couple of weeks ago they mutually decided to part ways. It was over before the New York Film Festival.” Yeah, Joaquin doesn’t want to be part of a Marvel franchise. At all.

MUCH prefer seeing him out with a dog as opposed to his (way too young) girlfriend. I also enjoy the pink leash!

  2. Chris says:

Inherent Vice has all the ingredients to be great. I really don’t care what the parochial Academy thinks.

    I love him.

Unrelated: I followed the link above to check out Joaquin’s dogs, and it was the most annoying site ever. The popups at the bottom made it impossible to read the caption, and you have to be careful because id you touch something accidentally you end up in a whole other place. The same thing happened when I went to eonline the other day, which I rarely do. So even though CB is sometimes judgey and one-sided, it really is the only place to go for gossip.

Sigh. So true. I get tired of all the racial pot stirring here but it really is the only site I come to for my gossip. I just skip the articles I know are gonna annoy me and its seems to work 😉

Love pit bulls. For all the bad reputation they’ve got, I’ve never met one that wasn’t sweet and snuggly. But then again, I tend to hang out with people who take owning a dog seriously and make sure they’re trained. The only dog that has ever snapped at my was some little mini foofoo thing that ran wild in the lawyers office next to mine.

Agreed. I have a pit bull and 3 young children. He is the so gentle with them and just a big sweetheart, as well as other pits I’ve seen. I would be more leery letting my kids around a Chihuahua or some other little yipper, they can be nasty and more likely to bite, in my experience.

    • DaisyMay says:

I happen to own a pitbull mix AND a chihuahua mix. Keeps people guessing. Both are loving and gentle but are also excitable and full of boundless energy. It’s all about the training!

+1. I’ve never had a pit bull but everyone I’ve ever known who has says they’re the best dogs in the world, so sweet and friendly and good with their kids and other pets. It’s definitely all about the owners and training. I could probably turn my Maltese/cocker spaniel mix into a killer if I really tried.

A pitbull attacked and killed my cocker spaniel 2 months ago. It also bit me. When I rushed my cocker to the emergency vet there was another dog there that was being treated for a pitbull attack. My dentist also had her dog killed by a pitbull around the same time frame. In arizona pitbulls are very common dogs so that could account for all the attacks. I’m not saying that pitbulls are to blame and I do believe it is partially the owners fault.. but the fact that they attack with such enthusiasm and won’t relent is what scares me when it’s paired with power and bad training.

I’m just saying, there are bad pitbulls out there. I can understand the fear and hate. I’m trying very hard not to demonize the breed even though I’ve lost my best friend because I know it’s mainly the owners fault. (He refuses to pay the vet bills because he’s mad I called animal control on him. I’ve had to hire a lawyer.)

I love pit bulls…and honestly most dogs (I’m not a HUGE lab fan because they are SO stubborn…but I know that can be helped with proper training so it’s not like I hate labs). It’s just important to recognize that every animal can be unpredictable. Train your dogs. Train your children how to treat dogs with respect. And supervise child-dog interaction, because you just never know.

Pit Bulls are the cutest pups ever, and this dog does look sweet.

  7. MarBear says:

Cute dog! Yes pits are bolters. I used to volunteer at an animal shelter. The pits were usually the most excited and the sweetest.

  8. lokismom says:

We adopted a pit or pit mix and he is the sweetest dog ever. He is very clingy and always wants to be in the same room as me but couldn’t hurt a fly. The cat beats him up. They are very trainable and want to please their owners. That’s why they can trained to be fighters.

Animal trivia: The most decorated military dog was a pitbull.

  12. Buckley says:

I hope it isn’t, but that collar looks a bit too tight around its neck.

  13. Cricket says:

Love the dog! What a beautiful face and def a bolter!

Another beaut is Zara Philips boxer! He is gorgeous too! She takes him to a lot of outdoors events and he looks like such a well trained boy, sometimes no lead!

  14. Me says:

You would think as an animal activist and wealthy, he could afford a proper harness for that precious pooch, instead of yanking on that tight collar.

  15. moo says:

He is using a slip lead collar or a rope martingale collar.

  16. SnarkySnarkers says:

Cute dog. WTF on his bloated, going grey, I’ve given up on mirrors look? He looks like 10 kinds of hell! Hoping this is for an upcoming role or something and thats why no one else is commenting on how terrible he looks?
