Katie Holmes says “enough is enough” with Suri gossip

2956-2956-1

In the April issue of Glamour, Katie Holmes talks about how she deals with the constant rumors and gossip regarding her daughter Suri. Of course, she doesn’t discuss the way she and her husband parade the little darling in front of photographers like some kind of trophy every chance they get. But she does talk about those early days, when there were rumors that Suri didn’t even exist, calling them “disgusting.” She also says that it’s hard to ignore all the things being said about her family when her instinct is to protect her family.

GLAMOUR: You are very protective of your family. You’ve said a couple of times [in response to various rumors about her relationship with Cruise, a practicing Scientologist, and speculation that Suri didn’t exist] that all of the gossip is “not OK.”

KH: Some of the stuff [people said] was such absolutely horrible things to say about a child. It was so uncalled for and so disgusting. Enough is enough.

GLAMOUR: Did Tom ever say, “Don’t worry about it” [since he was more used to media scrutiny]?

KH: Yes. We were changing diapers. He said, “I don’t want you to get upset.” And I said, “Well, I am upset.” So we approached it together. But I definitely felt like—as a woman, as the mother of Suri—I want to handle this! My mom is very strong, and if anyone ever said anything about any of us, she would be, “Excuse me? That’s my family!”

GLAMOUR: As you know, the rumor right now is that you are pregnant!

KH: Well, I’m not pregnant right now.

GLAMOUR: The people who print stuff like that…if you could say something to them, what would it be?

KH: Sometimes I think I would say, “Why don’t you come over and have dinner? See what there is to see.”

GLAMOUR: And what would they see? What’s a day in the life of Katie, Tom and Suri?

KH: We’re all together. We like to be together, so we use the house for our [business] meetings. [We] play Yahtzee, board games, Scrabble. We grill; have pool parties. We play “The Three Little Pigs” and Suri is the Big Bad Wolf. [Tom] reads storybooks to Suri, and we all laugh. When a good song comes on, he’ll break out in a dance. We’ll watch movies in bed—recently Madagascar and Cinderella, for Suri. We really have a good time.

[From Glamour]

It’s a nice picture Katie paints of their lives – all that wholesome family activity sounds like fun. But what she conveniently forgets to add to her recount of a typical day in their lives is all that Scientology stuff that certainly takes up a great deal of time. You don’t get to be the poster boy for Scientology without spending a considerable amount of money and time there. Then there’s also the fact that, in addition to board games and Disney movies, Suri also spends a large chunk of her life being trotted out in front of photographers almost daily. Suri has no privacy, and it wasn’t her choice to be famous. That’s not normal for a kid. But Katie’s right – people need to lay off Suri. She’s a little kid and can’t help the fact that she’s being raised by Hollywood loonies.

The rest of the world says “enough is enough” with parading her around the paps as a prop, then.

  2. Haystacks says:

I am distracted by her hair. Is she going gray?

  3. Abby says:

I don’t know. I mean, is she supposed to stay home for her entire childhood? My daughter and I go on outings almost every day. She’s exactly Suri’s age. And the photos of them pausing and smiling for the paps is probably so they can just.get.the.shot and hopefully leave them alone. I definitely think Tom is batshit crazy with the whole Scientology thing, but I’ve always liked Katie and it surprises me how cruel people are towards she and Suri. The photos of Suri crying and being frightened of the paps really tell a story, too. Of course she hates them, but what are they supposed to do? They’re followed EVERYWHERE. I’m so surprised that the people who make their living by writing about them accuse them of parading around for the paps. The paps follow THEM.

  4. Jeane says:

No, Michelle, the rest of the world does not say that.

Sometimes people seem to forget that the reason paparazzi are everywhere, obnoxiously bothering people and taking pictures, is because people like us want to see those pictures.
They’ll stop when it stops paying.

  5. Holly says:

I love how she says ” well why don’t you come have dinner in our home”, when it JUST came out that some waiter that served them in their mansion had an extensive background check and had to sign a twenty page confidentiality agreement. Sure KatE I’ll come over any time! Let me just get my lawyer and my good signing pen.

  6. Christina says:

i feel so sorry for stars who cry out for the paps to stop like this… you know they’re not going to, and i can only imagine the frustration… 🙁

  7. Michele says:

I don’t want to see their picture. The Cruise family could disappear into a black hole for all I care.

They’re another bunch that calls the paps beforehand to give them their whereabouts, anyway. You don’t get the right to bitch about being stalked by paparazzi when you’re actively tipping them off.

  8. lio says:

I’ve always been utterly shocked by post implying that Suri was not her father’s child or -even worse- that she was made in vitro with whatever was left of R.Hubbard. Not very smart. Not likely. Not funny. For me, here is the point were lines are crossed.

  9. andy says:

This couple pimp their kid out everyday in a different 2,000 dollar outfit to keep their careers alive. Without Suri they’d be nothing. I never seen Tom or Nicole pimp their other children out.

  10. ade says:

And the fact that Suri has NO friends. No other kids to interact with.

  11. j. ferber says:

Does anyone find it odd that David Miscaviage (sp.?), the leader of Scientology, went with Katie and Tom on their honeymoon? Or that Suri isn’t allowed to drink milk, but can only drink an L. Ron Hubbard-approved concoction? Or that Katie OD’d on a massive vitamin B regimen (again recommended by Dr. Ron) and her hands turned blue? I don’t care how much Scrabble they play, they are still weird.

  12. Baholicious says:

    @Lio – riiight, because $cientology never crosses any lines…

  13. kiki says:

then stop pimping your kid out many celebritys shield their children from the paps and have a quiet normal life, i.e. Johnny Depp if he can do it so can you Kate and Tom.
Suri has been one of the best things that has happend to Toms career showing her off keeps his name in the news and he needs it he got a lot of expenses. Have you noticed when a Celebrity gets into a downward dive from their money making business their livelyhood depends on you , the public buying a ticket to their movie, music etc if you dont like them no money no money goes into their pocket the first thing they do is get married have a baby , or get a baby get married look at Michael Jackson and Tom Cruise. its a PR tool.

  14. Rio says:

Honestly, I don’t buy that there’s no way for them to “escape the paparazzi”. Plenty of stars as large as they are and larger do on a regular basis and lead private lives. Take Johnny Depp– sure, we see some pictures of him on vacation, but his child was in the hospital and nobody knew until she was released. Robert De Niro, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks…you really don’t see pictures of them unless they’re promoting something, and they’re all world-famous.
To a certain degree, I think stars who are constantly followed by paparazzi encourage it. You have to think on some level that they like the attention.

  15. the original kate says:

they need to stop trotting that girl around all day if they don’t like the gossip. seriously, whenever i see photos of other celebs like kate winslet, ben affleck, etc with their kids the kids look normal, nobody is posing for the paps, etc. when i see the cruise family it always looks staged and suri always looks pissed.

  16. lisa says:

I think it is pathetic to make fun of and personally attack a child, no matter who the parents are celebrity-wise.

  17. Wow says:

True, the little girl doesn’t need to stay inside all of the time and being that she has famous parents, the paps are going to take her pictures. That’s normal in their world. But I do get the feeling that the real reason they have Suri out often is because maybe they have some sort of arrangement with whoever designs Suri’s clothing and she has to be photgraphed in them. Sort of like how actors and actress are sent designers dresses for consideration to wear at award shows. Maybe designers send them dresses for Suri to wear knowing that she is always photographed.

  18. kiki says:

the head of cofS went with them on their honeymoon. yeah. Does Toms mother still live with them? I read somewhere Toms mother moved in to help with newborn Suri and never went home. Her husband live by himself now.

  19. OXA says:

They CHOSE to parade this kid in our faces and still do, so quit bitching.
Other Celebs have kids that we dont see because their parents have them living normal lives out of the public eye.

  20. lio says:

    @ Baholicious
and that is a reason to behave as bad as they do?!!!!

  21. Zoe says:

“Then there’s also the fact that, in addition to board games and Disney movies, Suri also spends a large chunk of her life being trotted out in front of photographers almost daily”

I’m with Abby on this, why is it “trotting” her out. Why isn’t it that they GO out daily? Should they just never let her out?? Where’s the proof that the “paps are tipped off?”

Not that I like these two, but, this doesn’t seem fair.

  22. Michele says:

Suri is their biggest asset. They put on the cutesy outfits and bring her out on display ad hoc. Rarely if ever do you see her smiling, laughing, and just being a friggin’ child… what two year old enjoys being dragged to high-end stores or fancy restaurants all the time? I feel bad for Suri, not those two tools she had the misfortune of being born to.

Look at Jennifer Garner or Gwen Stefani, for example- they’re pretty well-known, but nine times out of ten you see them and their children getting photographed when they’ve taken their children to the park to play, all without making a big production of it.

  23. Christina says:

maybe the other celebs don’t get photographed as much because they don’t sell as many magazines… i think all these consipracy theories sound like people need to get better hobbies and stop trying to make up wild stories about celeb behavior… they all sound pretty farfetched and inhuman. at the end of the day, even celebrities are human and i don’t see most people thinking along the lines of pimping out their kids for money or fame or free clothing or WHATEVER… it’s absurd…

  24. Michele says:

Magazine sales are waaay down, and not just due to the economy. Celeb rags are all but obsolete… why shell out cash on them when anyone with an internet connection and two brain cells to rub together can log onto sites such as this or dlisted or a plethora of other gossip sites and get the same scoop not only for free, but read about news as it’s breaking?

  25. lrm says:

It’s also their choice of locale. Depp can spend time on his private island or in france and be less hounded. kidman lives in tennesse, roberts has new mexico. But when any of them are in NYC or LA,they are photographed. Roberts is p’d off in every photo of she and her children-she’s had alto fo confrontations to be sure. Brangelina is the same-they have said they can’t live in LA,but they choose NYC and even when trying New Orleans or France,it’s better for them, but not great,bc the paps do hound them.

My point is that it’s both sides to blame here-media hungry celebs and the paps.

It’s ridiculous when people post comments abuot how the kid [ie,Suri] has no friends,or how she’s always being held or whatever the comment is. It’s one freakin’ picture, people. even if it’s 10 pics in a row,it doesn’t give you a window into her entire existence! Same with the Brange clan. You don’t ‘know’ them.
I think Suri, and the jolie pitt kids all look pretty happy and healthy for the most part. Now,if you want to talk about children NOT loving their life or media scrutiny,i’d say it’s the charlie sheen/denise richard girls. They look so miserable and emotionally unhappy in every photo.

As for Katie,we might believe her if she didn’t look like a scary thin, sad, zombie most of the time. And the fact that she’s aged 10 years in 3 yrs time span. She does not look happy whatsoever with her life.Ever. [Except maybe those recent RIO pics;she seemed more relaxed in the brasilian sun-she needs a little brasilian culture,i think(:] That makes it tough to believe her words.

  26. lrm says:

I just want to add that a 2 yr old doesn’t normally have ‘friends’. they have playmates, and will not be out and about with those playmates at that age, except for maybe the park. But why do that if you have a private estate to play in privacy? C’mon with these comments. And I would hold my child too if there were suddenly 5 or 10 glaring camera lights and/or people 4 feet taller than my child,in his/her face. that’s a scary experience for a two year old. even my 8 yr old when walking in the city, holds my hand. the end.

  27. Baholicious says:

No Lio, two wrongs never make a right but the wackadoo, litigious, bullying and flat-out illegal nature of Co$ is a big reason that they’re drawing a lot of this fire to begin with.

  28. Obvious says:

There’s only the three of them? Doesn’t Tom’s other kids live with them???

  29. Zoe says:

@Christina, exactly. The other celebs simply aren’t as well-known. They don’t sell as many mags…

and yeah, TC really needs to “parade” his kid out to get FREE clothes. 🙂

I seem to remember a story where Katie took Suri to the park and there was world-wide shock and chaos when she wiped some play equipment down with hand sanitizer…

I find this whole “pimping” and “whoring” verbage to be extremely tacky and degrading.

  30. morgs says:

“enough is enough”. No shit biatch. Have you not noticed your daughter visibly upset and angry with her situation of you and your creepy husband parading her in front of the photographers. I’m pretty sure all the world class hotels you frequent have back door exits and other “celeb security friendly” options. And to say something about how she should have the normalcy of walking out a front door. I firmly give the one finger salute to that rationalizing. The poor girl is never going to be “normal”, you and crazy have robbed her of that.

  31. morgs says:

I know she didn’t say the front door thing in this article, but I remember reading something and having that implied.

  32. Christina says:

yeah, just count the number of times they appear on this website… couple days ago, they had some random celebrity story up and hardly anybody posted… but when TC or jolie or aniston or up there are tons of posts… so guess what, they have articles about them almost on a daily basis… it’s on based on statistics…

i know we all say we don’t want any stories about octomom… but when she’s up and there are upwards of a 100 posts, then the powers that be are simply satisfying our cravings… so as tough as it might be, we may have to assume some responsibility here…

  33. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

Of course she’s not pregnant. Tom doesn’t have any swimmers!

She looks like she has gray hair. I’ve never seen anyone age so quickly as this woman. Hard to remember she’s actually quite young.

For all I care, they could go to an island and never appear again in public. That would be great! Tom Cruise creeps me out more than anyone alive.

  34. becca says:

    “Enough is enough?”

Now see, I was under the impression that the two of you (Tomkat) were pimping out your poor daughter for the cameras. So that’s just Tom then?

  35. Lina says:

What about the “Free Katie” stuff that’s been going around for years? I don’t remember, did she address that issue before?

What kind of gossip is going on about Suri? I haven’t read anything bad about her, but I do think that the photographers need to leave all the celebrity children alone.

  36. Ned says:

The problem is that people are wondering who’s Suri’s real father.

That’s not going to go away, regardless of how cute and sweet Suri is- and she is.

I still don’t understand how not Chris Klien nor Josh Hartnett requested a paternity test.

Then again, they might be afraid to deal with cult members.

  37. jsan says:

    Well written CB!

Oh and she looks like she’s going on 40.

  38. H M says:

    Hello Michelle,

It was nice to chat with you the other day, and of course with the others too.

  39. H M says:

Katie H., she doesn’t look 40, she looks sad and stiff, like bent by a burden (she’s tall but it doesn’t explain her sadness).

  40. Rosanna says:

I don’t like Katie Holmes *however*… it’s her job as Suri’s parent to take decisions which affect Suri’s life JUST LIKE it’s the job of any parent. Would you want to be judged badly because your daughter is always dolled up and you always bring her with you? I don’t think so! Katie is just a young mother who loves to spend time with her young daughter. Because she happens to be famous, Suri gets to be exposed to paparazzi as well, so what? Should she have Suri live secluded in some exotic New Mexico ranch Julia Roberts style, as if keeping your children sequestered is a good choice? C’moooooooooooon.

  41. caribassett says:

Frankly I think it should be illegal for the paps to photograph celeb kids, I heard a video once of the paps photographing the Jolie Pitt children, it seemed so loud and frightening. I think the parents should release snapshots if they want to share them, and the children should be protected from such frightening situations 🙁

  42. greta says:

The reason I follow the Katie story is because it is fascinating to watch the disintegration of a human being in slow motion. I don’t wish it on her. She keeps herself in the public eye more than other celebs so it’s easy to follow the story. This story has interested me for years before she came on the scene because I was around at the beginning of Scientology, and watched some friends get involved back in the hippie days. It has always been incredibly seedy and corrupt (snakes in people’s mailboxes in Marin County back then). Tom is just the latest incarnation. But Katie and Suri–you can read their emotions on their faces. Pictures become the story for us. It’s obvious why she is slowly getting more depressed even though she “has it all”. I am constantly amazed when people try to hide the truth about their lives. If you live long enough, eventually you find out what was really going on. Orson Welles said one night to Johnny Carson, “I just want to live long enough to know who Brooke Shields marries!” Anyone remember that? The stars are our Greek gods with their shining Mt Olympus (hollywood) and their feet of clay.

It’s obvious why she is getting more depressed even though she “has it all”. She’s trapped in a world more weird than any of us could imagine. By the way, I don’t know how Katie manages to get her two year old to patiently wait through all those shopping expeditions. I’m not sure that is a good or bad thing.

  44. Ter says:

Lio – Tom is the face of Scientology, the good, the bad, and the deadly. So he has to suck it up and take the heat for all the illegal, nasty, and brutal stuff that has happened since he came on board with this nefarious group of “people”. It is unfortunate that his daughter gets fallout treatment but his high profile dictates much of that.

  45. RaraAvis says:

Continuing today’s theme of stating the obvious: BITCH, KEEP YOUR KID AT HOME AND EAT A SANDWICH.

  46. Kat says:

Katie, you look tired and hungry. Your coloring is off, and you look like an old lady. This routine, is not working. Time to try something else.
