Jennifer Garner in a sparkly purple dress at Elle event: cute or too young?

These are photos of some of the fashion at the Elle Women in Hollywood event last night. Kaiser told me that Calvin Klein sponsored the event. While I don’t have a designer ID on Jennifer Garner’s sparkly purple cap sleeve number, it’s possibly Calvin Klein. This is a fug dress with little shape. It looks like she should be wearing a bodysuit underneath for when she tumbles. Maybe Garner should fire Rachel Zoe as her stylist.

I sort-of like her styling, I’m glad she ditched the bangs and her makeup is decent, but that nude lipstick has to go and it looks like she’s been hitting the Botox.

Emmy Rossum went for a menswear look in a sexy Versace pantsuit which works, IMO. She’s showing a little skin at the neck but she’s not hanging out of it, and her high ponytail and cat eyes complement the look well. She looks hot. I would have made Emmy the headliner but no one comments on her posts.

Sarah Paulson paid tribute to the late Oscar de la Renta in a whimsical sequin and feather de la Renta gown that fits her like a glove. This dress is so thoughtful, I love how the square sequins on the bodice are broken up by the oval inkblot beading at the neckline, which mirrors the feathers on the skirt. It’s perfectly balanced.

Andie MacDowell didn’t bring her fashion game, she was wearing a scoop neck navy top and black skinny jeans, but she looks amazing right? She’s 56 years old. I’ve covered Andie several times and I should know this, but I would have put her in her mid 40s tops.

Andie McDowell is so gorgeous-aging beautifully and naturally, a rarity in Hwood.

    • Kiddo says:

I’m fairly certain she’s had work. But she still looks good.

    • Pandy says:

I think she looks the best out of all of these pix! Jennifer Garner needs the bangs and that dress is like a skater costume. Sarah Paulson’s dress is a step above the Bjork’s swan outfit imho. Gah.

      • Fan says:

I really like Jennifer Garner’s dress. She looks fresh and not overdone.

      • Kosmos says:

Normally, I love Jennifer Garner, but here, she looks like she’s wearing something slightly too young looking for her; however, I love her shoes with this type of dress. She is a beautiful woman and always looks great in a dress, but not so much this dress, although the color is good. One more thing…her muted lips just dull her out too much. Even though muted lips are shown in many of these photos, not ‘everyone’ looks good in a muted lip. Even a soft color can do wonders to brighten up a face…..

      • BoredAndExtremelyDangerous says:

Are they Jennifer Garner’s real lips? The colour is vile, and in her smiling pic, the top lip is just as full as in the non-smiling pic. It looks unnatural and off.

As for the clothing, I can’t ~dress or style~ myself to save my life, so I’m fine with people just wearing what they like, whether others think they look good or not.

    • Mel says:

“only because she looks less old than a couple of years ago. It’s probably minimal.”

People don’t necessarily look older with the passage of time. I know this from personal experience. I looked “younger” (AND better, which is not always the case) at 42 than at 36. No surgery or other procedures involved, just my personal beauty regime (I make my own cosmetics) and more joie de vivre.

    • jane16 says:

I’m a long time fan of Andie, and don’t think she has had much work done, if any, but think she has been botoxing. An unfortunate side effect of botox is that it makes your eyebrows go lower, especially the parts on either side of your nose. Some of my friends that botox have gotten little nips & tucks to raise them back up. One of the many reason why I won’t do it.

  2. CM says:

You pick up on the Botox with Garner but don’t mention Andie MacDowell’s forehead?!!

    • noway says:

Okay just curious, I noticed that Andie had a few less lines on the forehead than would be normal for a 56 year old, but there are still some covered by makeup well. She is pretty good with the makeup as opposed to some. Where is Jennifer’s botox around the eyes I guess? I am just saying because I don’t notice at first then they all start looking way to plastic and stuck or real puffy.

      • tessy says:

She looks natural and great. I’m 58 and my forehead doesn’t have any more lines than Andi MacDowell’s. I’ve never had botox. Some people have lines in their 30’s, and some never get them.

      • Mel says:

There is no “normal” look for any given age. My mother at 65 (not a typo) had fewer lines than Dowell has at 56. She never had any procedures (AND she smoked).
Also, like I said earlier, it is not a given that a person will look increasingly older with age. I have ups and down myself. There are years when I look a decade or so younger than I am, then there can be a period where I “look” almost my age (but again, there is no “normal” look for any age), then another period comes when I look several years younger – and so on.

    • Crystal says:

My thoughts exactly!!! Andie Macdowell is botoxed to hell and back but she’s aging naturally?!

    • Wendy says:

What about garner’s forehead?should have stuck to bangs…

    • Kristine says:

And whoever waxed Andie’s eyebrows should have their license revoked. It’s distracting how bad they are.

      • Esmom says:

I noticed them too, but it looked to me like she was just too heavy-handed with the brow pencil.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Was Andie one of the first models to do Botox commercials,,years ago?

  3. Jaderu says:

OH no girl don’t start with the Botox! Her dress looks like the leg warmers I had in 7th grade.

    • Wren says:

I think I had her dress in chocolate brown in 7th grade. It gave me flashbacks of super awkward middle school dances where everyone wore ill-fitting “fancy” clothes and slow danced by mechanically rocking back and forth while bracing your arms to keep your partner as far away as possible.

      • Jaderu says:

And pathetically dedicated “Eye of the Tiger” to the dude you had a crush on because you panicked and couldn’t think of a better song.
        Everybody did that right?
        Right??!!??
        *sigh*

      • mimif says:

Lol TaterHo. Where is blue marie? She would love this one.

      • sigh((s)) says:

Eye of the Tiger? You couldn’t have gone the Journey route?

  4. Jag says:

Yes, Jennifer’s dress is too young. I like the color on her though. I want to know what treatments she uses for her skin! Her legs look great, but I don’t like the bottom of the dress.

I don’t like the Oscar de la Renta dress.

Andie looks so much better than the last time I saw a picture of her. I want to know what she’s doing, too.

  5. Alexi says:

Gardner needs a better makeup artist

    • FingerBinger says:

I was thinking the same thing. I guess “nude” makeup is a thing ,but it isn’t for everyone. It definitely isn’t for her.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I wish I could do nude lips, but they look terrible on me. They look better, but not great, on her.

      • Miss Melissa says:

She could do nude lips without doing that shade. That color is just too light… its for someone with paler skin and lips with less natural pigment. Too much white in the base of that shade.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Agree – poor makeup. Did she do something to her face or is it different makeup?

    • Tiffany :) says:

The super pale lip isn’t flattering, and it really throws off the balance of her face.

  6. Lotta says:

Sara Paulson’s makeup and hair makes her look like a scare crow. I think the dress is awful too.

  7. Esmom says:

I think Jennifer looks great from the waist up, the top part of the dress is flattering and her hair and makeup are pretty. I think she looks so much better without bangs (trauma).

Sarah’s dress is pretty but it seems too fancy and her hair and makeup are kind of frightening. I haven’t liked much of any of her looks as of late.

Andi M is stunning, just stunning. Simple, chic and so beautiful.

  8. Abbott says:

Why would you want to paint your lips the color of Eddie Redmayne’s?

  9. Leftovers says:

Sarah Paulson’s dress reminds me of this precious gem:

    http://images.askmen.com/entertainment/better_look/the-office-clips_1363710495.jpg

  10. Maum says:

I agree with Alexi. That lipstick on Jennifer Garner is criminal!!! It’s not even nude it’s actually paler than her skin tone.
And the shoes really don’t fit the dress.

I LOVE Sarah Paulson’s crazy dress. I love her full stop, ever since American Gothic.

  11. Jess says:

That lipstick color isn’t working for Garner, but she still looks great. Andie looks amazing! Her forehead has obviously been worked on but you can tell her age around the eyes, she looks great though.

  12. Marianne says:

    Jennifer’s dress looks like a skater’s costume.

    Uggghhh.

    i really like Emmy’s suit and I like’s Sarah’s dress.

  13. Bridget says:

That purple dress needs to be burned, along with that nude/pink lipstick.

  14. mkyarwood says:

That nude lip thing was a fashion week trend.. along with skin brows.

    • Bridget says:

The key is knowing which runway trends a person can pull off, because either a nude lip isn’t meant for Jennifer or they just executed it really badly.

  15. Size Does Matter says:

Oh, Jennifer. She looks like she’s 13 going on 90. And she’s been doing so well lately! Emmy – neckline reminds me of a rhinestone cowboy but otherwise pretty good.

    No comment on the others.

  16. penelope says:

Love Jen but that dress is WAY too young. Otherwise she looks great though.

  17. noway says:

Seriously I think Jennifer has been shopping too much for her girls because purple sparkly junior shapely is happening with the under 11 crowd. Why don’t people comment on Emmy she is beautiful and talented. What a shame. I think she look great in the suit. Love the De La Renta, but not a fan of Sarah’s lipstick with this dress. Maybe if she did her hair differently with the classic red lips, just a bit of a miss. Andie could wear a bag and look gorgeous, and at 56. I could only dream to look that good.

  18. Bridget says:

Jen Garner and Emmy Rossum need to trade outfits. Sara Paulson needs to just go home, no one “loves” her anymore and she’s just strange-looking and the dress is terrible.

  19. Jenna's Snark says:

Have you guys seen what she said at the event? I saw this online:

““The fact that there even needs to be a Women in Hollywood event is a little bit sad,” Jennifer said. “I mean, the men in Hollywood event is every day—it’s called Hollywood. Fifty-one percent of the population should not have to have to schedule a special event to celebrate the fact that in an art that tells the story of what it means to be human and alive, we get to play a part.”

“So for example, my husband and I do kind of the same job, a little bit. Not long ago we both had one of those magical days, we call it a junket, where we both attended these lovely events where people come in every four minutes, they ask the same questions over and over again, you know the drill. We got home at night and we compared notes,” Jennifer continued. “And I told him every single person who interviewed me, I mean every single one, and this is true of the red carpet here tonight Elle, asked me, ‘How do you balance work and family?’ and he said the only thing that people asked him repeatedly was about the tits on the ‘Blurred Lines’ girl [Ben Affleck’s Gone Girl co-star Emily Ratajkowski], which, for the record if we’re talking about them, they are real and they are fabulous. Take a look and enjoy.”

    • Lena says:

That girl has a name Jen…..

Is she a little upset about that scene between Ben & Emily? hmmm

    • Kitten says:

Oh my god..that’s f*cking amazing that she said that! lol

@ Lena-she sounds pretty damn secure to me. As far as calling her “the Blurred Lines girl”-she was obviously referring to how the press described her.

    • lucy2 says:

Good for her! I’m glad she noticed the difference and spoke up about it.

  20. mernymerlyn says:

Here goes an Emmy Rossum comment.
I adore her! She is amazing on Shameless. They try really hard to downplay her looks but it does not work.
Her outfit here is incredibly sexy.
Please post more of her pics!

  21. JustChristy says:

I like the sparkly purple dress! *ducks* Yes, it could use any shaping, all the shaping, but it’s not as bad as the zombie Barbie lips. She looks great otherwise.

Sarah Paulson, I appreciate just for being Sarah Paulson.

They all look lovely, lack of shape, reanimator lips, Rorschach and all.

  22. Sarah says:

I’m starting to thing Garner is pregnancy trolling us with her wardrobe choices like Aniston. She’s a beautiful girl, I don’t understand why her clothes fit so poorly.

  23. Jackson says:

Ugh. Jennifer. No, just no. She usually looks great on the red carpet but this is pure fail. She looks almost ghoulish with those lips. It had to have looked better in person because I can’t imagine anyone heading out anywhere looking like that and thinking ‘yeah, I’m good.’
Something nice…..I actually like the color/fabric of her dress and think it would look great as a slim pencil skirt, maybe in a sleeveless sheath, or even a long formal gown. Just not in this ice skater dress.

  24. Ellen says:

Jen has been looking … not-herself … since she started the “Alexander and the Terrible” junket. It’s more obvious in some photos than others, but she’s definitely doing botox and I would lay money on some fillers, because in certain angles, her face shape just looks … well, I keep coming back to not-herself. It’s subtle, but I think it’s definitely going on right now.

Andie has had a lot of subtle and not-so-subtle work over the years, and when it settles (as it has right now), she looks great.

Jen’s dress really stood out as Too Girlish when she was lined up with the other women who had Elle covers — comparing her look to Tiny Fey’s, Jen just looked like a mess. (I think it’s better on its own, but still about 20 years too young for her.)

  25. lucy2 says:

I dislike Garner’s hair and makeup choices here, and as for the dress, I liked it until I scrolled down and saw the flouncy skirt, it definitely makes it look too young.
    Emmy looks good.
Sarah’s hair and makeup are off a bit too, but she can pull off the quirky dresses, and I kind of like this one.

  26. serena says:

Jennifer Garner usually brings it on fashion events, but this is a total fail. Lipstick is too pale, and there’s too much eyeliner going on. Not talking about the disaster that is the dress.. and even the hairstyle sucks.

On the other hand Emmy Rossum looks amazing! I like her a lot!

  27. Camille (The Original) says:

Garner needs to get a new hair cut, its too long and looks terrible. In fact this look (from head to toe), is almost as bad as her day to day life style. Awful.

  28. Lily says:

Whoa I know she’s going to be applauded for it, but I think her comment about the “Blurred Lines” girl is lame. There’s no need to bring that up. She just sounds like it got to her. She was probably just trying to be funny but if I was Emily I’d be a bit insulted. One that she doesn’t name me and two that she’s talking about my tits and telling others to “enjoy” as if they’re some kind of main attraction when it’s just what the book/film called for. I suppose she asked Ben if they were real for him to give up that information.. Can’t imagine a husband saying out of the blue “her tits are real and they’re fabulous” lol. She just sounds jealous and pathetic. They ask about her kids and family because that’s all that keeps her relevant.

    • Lena says:

Well it’s lame that only women are asked that even though men work and have families too so how do they balance it? I’m interested in what a dad would say as a mom. Plus what I’m really interested in is the movie they are trying to promote so why not just as questions about that during a junket?

  29. LaurieH says:

Jennifer Garner needs bangs. She’s all forehead. The top half of her dress is fine, but the bottom half ventures into twee/skater territory. Emmy Rossum looks great, though she might consider toning down the raccoon eyes. The only thing worse than Sarah Paulson’s dress is her hair. Andie MacDowell looks fabulous. I don’t think she’s had botox. She has lines on her forehead, but those can easily be de-emphasized with makeup. I am 6 years younger than her and have absolutely no forehead wrinkles or crow’s feet (yet!). Andie has pretty pronounced crow’s feet. I think is she were to go to the trouble of botoxing her forehead, she’s have done something with the crow’s feet too. That’s why I think she hasn’t had the botox.

  30. Stephanie says:

I will comment on her – Emmy Rossum is totally f’ing hot.

  31. JoJo says:

Hate Garner’s dress. It looks like a costume and something one of her daughters should be wearing. I too have noticed subtle changes in her face recently – I’m sure she does some amount of Botox and fillers, but she’s keeping it relatively natural, which is good. Her shoes are also terrible with the horrible dress. Also, her hair is getting way too long.

FYI, LOVE Emmy Rossum! Totally obsessed with Showtime’s Shameless.

  32. Anare says:

Jennifer Garner’s dress looks like something that would get a person kicked off of Dancing With the Stars. Hideous! Make-up and styling are tragic. She was on Jimmy Fallon recently and looked gorgeous. This look is just cringe-worthy.
