Duchess Kate in baby blue Jenny Packham in London: cute or too mullety?

Here are some photos of Duchess Kate’s appearance last night at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards in London. This was Kate’s second public appearance yesterday. And yesterday’s two public events were her first events since August. It seems Kate is through the worst of her morning sickness, and she looked much improved in these evening shots. Meaning, she didn’t look like she about to barf on a ceremonial horse for the evening event, but horse-barfing was definitely a possibility at the carriage procession in the morning. I’m also including some photos from earlier in the day, including that shot of Kate’s coatdress billowing up because she’s still not weighting her hems. Classic Waity!

Also Classic Kate – this Jenny Packham gown she wore to the Wildlife Photographer event. This makes me recall the old Issa dresses she used to wear during her long courtship with William. Back then, Kate loved some clingy jersey, she loved to show her legs in anything short (some things never change) and she loved to party all night. I have mixed feelings about this Packham gown – I think the color is pretty and the general silhouette is clean and smart. You know I like a good sleeve. But the tufting on the sleeve is pissing me off and the front slit/mullet dress effect is really, really tacky. Not princessy, not duchessy. Very Real Housewife, honestly.

Yes, ITA Kaiser. The evening gown is very tacky with that mullet showing off her muscular man legs.
    Not regal at all.

    • SamiHami says:

      “Muscular man legs”

      *eye roll*

      • KIddo says:

And here, I was making a mental note about how great her legs were, the stupid dress notwithstanding.

      • GiGi says:

I know – her legs look amazing to me, too.

      • HH says:

Sami – I’ll see your eye roll and raise you a hefty “guffaw” because those legs are FAR from manly. In fact, it’s the first time I’ve really liked her legs. Most of the time they look like twigs.

      • Luciana says:

Stop the body shaming! Come on, Louise!

      • Catk says:

How dare women have muscles on their legs! Must starve ourselves to mere bone and tendon. Duh.

I think she looks great, except of course, for the eyeliner. Channeling Princess Di there.

      • Brittney B says:

@Catk – “How dare women have muscles on their legs! Must starve ourselves to mere bone and tendon. Duh.”

Amazing. I want to say this to every body-snarker who has ever called a woman “manly” for being strong and toned.

      • aang says:

She has great legs and looks so much better with a little weight. My daughter is a dancer and has amazing muscles in her legs. You can see them even when she is relaxed, and her butt is like a rock. I would not call her “manly” but she is ripped and should be proud, it took a lot of hard work to get those muscles.

      • L says:

If those are ‘man legs’ I want to be a man.

    • Olenna says:

I agree, Louise. She totally missed the mark with this gown (and the hair).

    • Merritt says:

Man legs? Really? Muscular legs are man legs? There is no need to body shaming. There is nothing wrong with being muscular.

      • FLORC says:

I think we need a sign to follow Louise’s comment that says “Do Not Feed The Troll”. Because that’s all we have here. a troll looking to incite an argument.

    • Stacie says:

Oh, how I would be so lucky to have some “muscular man legs” like Kate!

    • feebee says:

No to the dress, hell yes to the legs. Time and place Kate. But those legs, they are some spectacular pins. For muscular man legs – see Chris Pratt’s current thighs.

    • cadomin43 says:

      Muscular man legs??

GTF outta here with that. Give me a freakin’ break.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Sorry Louise, but her legs are great. I’d like to have “man legs” lookn that good!

    • T.C. says:

Her nice muscular and toned legs are IMO her best feature. They are one of the best legs out of all celebrity women. I will take these anyday over the thin skin and bones of a Taylor Swift. Only negative is the short dress and the unweighted skirts and dresses.

    • hmmm says:

Angelina Jolie may have showcased ‘The Leg’ but it’s clear Waity now has her own showcase- the entrance of ‘The Legs’. it’s like they’re disembodied. It seems that her legs matter more to her than any other aspect of her.

I think her legs are fine, but not all that. Not beautiful or especially shapely, and they are short. Cyd Charisse had amazing gams, in comparison.

    • Chammy says:

Dress shows off her fake tan and her muscular legs = regular work outs.

I thought when suffering from severe HG then working out and smelling fake tan was rather not possible?

      • notasugarhere says:

Yes, that does beg the question. Did she stop her regular workouts for the past 6 weeks? Because those don’t look like the legs of someone who has lost 10-15% of her body weight and has been prone on the sofa for 6 weeks.

    • MoxyLady007 says:

      Her legs look amazing.

    • Carrie says:

Not sure where your eyes are because she has great legs….

    • Vava says:

I don’t have a problem with muscular legs, I think they are attractive. But in the mullet dress, Kate’s legs have softened and IMO would benefit from some stockings (and some closed toe shoes). But mostly though, the dress is just inappropriate, she shouldn’t be show casing her legs. Save them for private moments with William, Kate.

  2. mkyarwood says:

All I can see is the Prince’s crazy TMJ in that header photo.

  3. LadyMTL says:

I really like the color of the dress but the almost-wraparound mullet thing is a bit of a strange look. Still, I can forgive her for wanting a break from her usual coat dress ensemble.

  4. GiGi says:

The Packham dress was lovely when she was standing still – but in motion – it’s awful. And, again, she’s wearing lovely jewelry (modern, non-royal, but still) and it’s all covered up with her heavy hair. Aside from that – she does look much improved from the morning!

    • HH says:

Exactly! I was prepared to like it until I saw the “in – motion” photos. It looks very “real housewives” when she’s walking. I also agree on the jewelry and hair issue. I’m hoping there’s a common sense correlation going on and Kate just doesn’t wear the expensive royal jewelry because she knows it’ll be covered up anyways.

I think the dress called for a closed toe, pointed stiletto pump (but not sky high).

      • bluhare says:

Definitely agree about the shoes. I like them, just not with this dress.

      • FLORC says:

Well, isn’t 1 of Kate’s favorite shows TOWIE? That’s kinda RH-ish. I think that’s the look she llikes.

It’s kind of funny. People will blast any of the RH cast for wearing those types of dresses to events not half as nice as this one, but if it’s on Kate the dress is perfection. Mostly refering to other sites with this story. The comments are funny.

      • notasugarhere says:

The RH and Towie theme is continued with the all-over spray tan she seems to have gotten between the morning event and the evening one. I thought that was not advised during pregnancy?

      • FLORC says:

        Nota
Some spray on tans could be toxic. Most now are safe(r).
It’s tough to tell from pictures too. Her skin tone changes pic to pic as well as her makeup and skin. It’s really more about what touch up process the pics went through. The same day Kate can look a dozen different ways in pics taken from the same camera.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      +1

    • L says:

This. The dress was stunning was she was standing still, but the motion shots are awful. The shots going up the stairs were ugh.

I actually love the shoes though. Not her usual LK Bennet pumps or wedges of doom and something more risky for once. I like the flower.

    • angelique says:

It looks like Waity designed this dress all by herself!

      • Olenna says:

Bwahaha! Choked on my beer, which I hate to waste, BTW, ’cause it’s hard to find. GoT, Valar Morguhulis, Dubbel Ale…not Guinness, but not bad.

  5. Antonym says:

I fully expected to hate it, but I like it. I think it’s flattering on her. (Ducks, while running for cover)

    • Elle says:

I like it too – and I generally hate mullet dresses.

I do think the fit of both outfits was a bit off yesterday, but I’m giving her a pass. When one of my friends was pregnant, she stopped wearing anything even remotely tailored because, in her words, she swore she had days when her measurements changed between breakfast and lunch. Kate’s not showing yet, but I do think that, even with custom-made, high-end designers, getting the perfect fit can be difficult.

      • wiffie says:

I’m due in April worth #2 too, and I’ve even taken pics to show how ridiculous the size of belly can change over the course of a few hours during the day. I wake up barely looking pregnant. I go bed looking about 5 months along. It’s amusing. I’m shorter and have a super sorry torso, so I show waaaaaay more than Kate right now, but it’s quite true.

      • Elle says:

wiffie – Congratulations! And thanks for making me chuckle.

  6. Jessica says:

Why does nothing ever fit her properly. If I can manage to get clothes properly tailored, surely the future Queen can too.

The dress is an awkward mix of two dresses. You put those sleeves, with that shoulder detail, in that fabric, on a jacket or an office wear dress. It doesn’t work with a mulletty, tight, revealing skirt, and it makes Kate look extremely out of proportion. The McQueen yesterday also wasn’t tailored properly, but at least the flared skirt balanced out her broad shoulders.

  7. Kristen says:

Is England, like, EXTREMELY windy? I’ve literally never had a problem with a dress blowing up/around in my entire adult life, and I wear fabrics that you’d criticize Kate for and I don’t weight my hems.

  8. Zimmer says:

I loved the shoes and I have to admit her legs looked great!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Yes, they’re pretty.

    • PunkyMomma says:

I’d love to have legs that looked like that.

    • angelique says:

They do look nice here with some weight on them. They also look quite tan, almost as if she has been spending time at the beach. This is curious considering Waity has been bed-ridden with a severe form of morning sickness.

      • MinnFinn says:

I also wondered if she had spent time in Mustique. Her tan does not at all appear look like spray on. At the very least, she’s been to the tanning booth.

Also, I posted on today’s other thread about Kate, those pins of hers have seen regular workouts during the past 12 weeks. Somehow during her HG she managed to keep herself in peak physical condition.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •MinnFinn•

Let’s not forget she appears to have gained weight rather than lost it too.

(I really hate calling her HG diagnosis into question but I just don’t see it. I think she probably had a nasty case of normal morning sickness rather than the life-threatening HG).

      • FLORC says:

        LadySlippers/MinnFinn
She certainly appears to be having a normal and healthy pregnancy. There just isn’t any real evidence of her diagnosis outside of a press release. I bet her test results and charts would hae her just below boarderline at best. She just appears too healthy to support having been so ill for so long. If anything her legs look in better shape now than a few months ago. Tan included.

Regarding tanning. Didn’t the Midds have a new gym installed in their home before Kate came to live with George? I remember because it was for Kate’s use and that meant the Midds didn’t pay for it. Anyways, it came with a tanning section.

  9. Talie says:

This is probably the sexiest she’s ever looked. Very surprising!

  10. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Re coat blowing up – she’s wearing a slip or something black underneath at least. That’s an improvement.

I love the color of the dress on her. Mullet just isn’t my thing, but I think she looks pretty except for the high school cheerleader hair. If she would cut it up to her collarbone, I think she would look so much more chic.

    • GiGi says:

ITA. If you look at all the other Euro Royal women – they all wear their hair up (well, except Letizia, for the most part) because I’m sure no one wants to be fussing around with hair when you’re supposed to be working the crowd. No one, but Kate, I guess.

      • AM says:

I think the others have an appreciation of the fact that some events call for the formality or neatness of an updo. I do think Kate looks great here – healthy, hair looks better in this style than it has in a long time, and she stepped out of her comfort zone color and style wise. I may not fully endorse the end result, but baby steps.

    • Sumodo1 says:

“High school cheerleader hair.” *sigh* GNAT for the win.

  11. Reader says:

This is a great look on her – the colour, her hair, the shoes (especially!), and her slight weight gain – all perfect; 10/10. I just wish she’d stay this weight (far healthier – especially in her legs!) in future – she looks so much better with a bit of meat on her bones.

    • Reader says:

PS: What’s up with her expression in the second photo? It’s almost like she’s so nervous, she’s sort of biting the insides of her cheeks. Poor thing – I’d hate to be gossiped about and constantly criticised too.

      • FLORC says:

She’s always done that. It appears more of something when she’s bored. It’s a face she gave at wimbledon with pippa. They allegedly were trash talking an athletes wife.
Kate has thin lips and slight underbite. When she sucks in her mouth like that things look more exaggerated than they are. I just don’t think it’s a face she pulls out exclusively for nerves.

      • Allie says:

@FLORC How on earth would you know if she was bored or if its nerves? I look angry most of the time, the consequences of a resting bitch face, and I can assure you most of the time I am not mad. And unless you or someone you trust was right next to her, I’m also going to have to doubt that Kate and her sister were making fun of an athlete’s wife, in public. I understand that Kate is not a favorite on this site, but lets not go overboard. I appreciate gossip as much as the next person but I’d like some sort of truth to mine.
I actually like the dress, although I hate mullet dresses. I think its the color and sleeves. I just wish she’d understand how to put on my makeup properly.

      • notasugarhere says:

Allie, I believe the negative comments about the athlete’s wife were overheard by people sitting near KM and Pippa and reported. FLORC isn’t making it up, whether or not you want to believe it. They were snarking on the woman’s weight.

      • LadySlippers says:

I actually see the unflattering photos as a gauge of how the press is feeling towards the Royals of their country. I base this on the fact that editors flat out said they usually had an equal number of flattering/unflattering photos of Diana and Sarah. However, you’d never guess it by what they published. Hence, the editors know how to strike back as we all get caught in yucky poses. So whenever I know see a slew of unflattering Kate photos, I wonder what William has done to piss of the press…

      • FLORC says:

        Allie
I’m not in Kate’s head. I’m simply observing. It’s something she did when she looked comfortable. It’s not something she did when she looked nervous. And in many fraction of a moment shot she made those funny faces sucking in her lips. All that and what I stated is how I formed my opinion. I’m sure you and your observations came to a seperate conclusion and neither of us have inside line to Kate and her inner thoughts.

        Nota
She just had twin girls I remember and still had some weight from the pregnancy. They were being spotlighted and that’s when Kate and Pippa were caught looking like any girls would when eyeing someone and trash talking them.

        LS
I kind of see it the same. Kate makes some unfortunate faces here and there. Like we all would and not even realise we do. They don’t have to get published, but when they do it seems very passive aggressive from the press.

  12. AmandaPanda says:

I just can’t believe it was meant to fan out behind her like a cape – it looks like the mullet bits should be falling diagonally (as in the second bottom picture). It looks cool like that – not when it’s full mullet. I don’t think that lighter shade of blue is her colour but it looks fine, I suppose – meh. There’s something off about the whole thing but I can’t put my finger on it and don’t care enough to ponder any further!

Ps do we think she got her hair done twice yesterday? The horror!

    • Reader says:

I’m just waiting for someone to say ‘oh, she’s had her hair dyed’ … when in fact I bet she’s (or her hairdresser’s) just used one of those touch-up crayons on her grey roots.

      • Marigold says:

Who cares if she’s dyed her hair? You can dye your hair when pregnant. It’s completley safe.

  13. Someonestolemyname says:

Wow I love the Color of the gown and I love the gown when it’s closed, just showing a peak of leg. I am surprised it was a short dress under a long , the British press didn’t publish those Angles at first, so I just thought it was a pretty long gown with a spilt. I don’t like the very short reveal underneath at all. Like it better when it appears to be just a long gown.

She looks healthy and her hair silky, shiney.

What I like most about last night was The Queen had Sophie,The Countess of Wessex in tiara, seated with her at the head table for the Banquet at Buckingham Palace. Its obvious the Queen feels her daughter in law, Sophie can handle these State Banquets with her and adores Sophie, If that was Kate seated there, the UK Royal press would have gone into sheer hysteria and accolades crashing all social media. Ha 🙂

    • Reader says:

Sophie learnt from her mistakes (when she still had her PR firm and there was all that kafuffle about an interview or something she did) and is a true modern-day Princess (even though she doesn’t hold that title, per se). She’s a genuinely lovely lady whose tireless work for her charities doesn’t go unnoticed … Edward did extremely well in marrying her, that’s for sure.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Sophie is a PRINCESS. Sophie is HRH the Princess Edward, she’s just as much a Princess of The United Kingdom as Kate is.
Sophie is married to the Queen’s son and just as Kate is Princess William, Sophie is HRH ThePrincess Edward.
        Sophie is definately a Princess.

      • Reader says:

I said ‘per se’ – as in her title is COUNTESS, it’s not Princess. She’s is known as the COUNTESS OF WESSEX, not the Princess of Wessex.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Im just saying, Sophie is a Princess. She as much as Princess as Kate is.
Her title is also HRH The Princess Edward.

“Sophie has been styled as “Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex”.[18] She can also be styled as “Her Royal Highness The Princess Edward, Countess of Wessex”.[18]” Wikepdia

Just as there is no Princess Kate , there is no Princess Sophie, what their Princess titles are derved from is their husbands so Sophie is HRH The Princess Edward, just as Kate is Princess William.

Sophie is definately a Princess, it’s one of her titles.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Reader•

•Someonestolemyname• is correct. In the UK a woman takes on her husband’s full title at marriage so even Camilla is a princess as is all the women I will list. Granted, they are princesses by marriage and that’s reflected in how they are addressed.

Camilla: HRH The Princess Charles, Princess of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Rothesay, etc. etc..

Sophie: HRH The Princess Edward, Countess of Wessex, Viscountess Severn

Birgitte: HRH Princess Richard, Duchess of Gloucester, Countess of Ulster, Baroness Culloden

Catherine: HRH Princess William, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness
        Carrickfergus

Same for Kate Kent (HRH Princess Edward, Duchess of Kent, etc.) and Marie-Christine (HRH Princess Michael of Kent). Note, only children of the Sovereign are allowed to put the ‘The’ in front of prince/princess (e.g. HRH The Princess Anne) with only Philip being an exception to that rule (QEII bestowed the honour through Letters Patent).

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Reader•

I need to add that the use of a specific territorial designator within the UK with ‘prince/princess of X’ indicates a child of the actual title holder (ie Wales, Cambridge, York, Wessex, Kent, and Glousester). So Sophie would never be ‘HRH Princess Sophie of Wessex’ as that’s how her children would be styled if Edward and Sophie had chosen to follow the titling pattern established with previous Letters Patents. Similarly, Charles is not HRH The Prince Charles of Wales because that means he is his own son.

*IF* QEII decided to modernise the BRF as other Royal and Imperial families have, Sophie would most likely be HRH (the) Princess Sophie of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. But it’s unlikely that QEII will modernise but it’ll be interesting to see if Charles will instead.

    • LadySlippers says:

I’m trying to find more links as apparently both Sophie AND Marie-Christine were there!!!

      http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.com/2014/10/state-visit-from-singapore-state-banquet.html?m=1

Does anyone else have other links to share?

      :ETA:

Here’s a video. It looks as if Sophie wore this outfit before — Madeleine’s wedding is my guess.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Sophie was seated at the head table with the Queen. There are photo links with some Photos on Twitter, I Saw last night.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Someonestolemyname•

I saw that! But only glimpses… I want some decent shots of both Sophie and Marie-Christine. Andrew (he looked *gasp* quite dashing too) and both Edwards (Wessex and Kent) were there too… Let’s be honest, I just want more pics overall.

  14. Ginger says:

She has all of the elements correct IMO. She knows what her strengths are but the execution of it is off. A wrap can make her look more curvy since she’s tall and athletic. She’s accentuating her slight weight gain from the pregnancy. And her legs are fantastic! I just wish she’d found a different dress to do all of that with. And I agree that her hair is distracting from the jewelry GiGi! I want to see more of that necklace.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Kate’s always had great legs and great hair Even with an extension and on, her hair is Lush, but as someone said, the dress although a gorgeous Color and fabric, still comes off a bit of a WAG in style because it’s so short under. I didn’t know that short portion was there until, Insaw the Celebitichy Photos. It’s sort of disappointing that she had so many elementa so right, Color, shoes, weight, fabric, them she turns it into a leg show with the short dress under.
It’s pretty, but just a tad Waggish for a serious royal outing.
She looks great though, weight is good.

  15. Leftovers says:

Random DM comment of the day:

“2 engagements in one day, must be Mustique o’clock”

  16. Karen says:

She looks like a WAG not a representative of the Queen of England.

This is her job, and as such she should wear appropriate attire to her work functions. Be as quirky as you want on your own dime, this is company time and money. I can’t imagine any other state/country rep wearing a (jersey?) caped mini dress to a gala.

    • Olenna says:

      I agree.

    • Vava says:

      AMEN.

Kate just doesn’t get that, though. Honestly, I’d love to know what William thought of this display last night. She obviously had a good time and would she if he was with her?

Although I like the color of the dress, I don’t think it’s really season appropriate, and although I like her shoes for once, they aren’t either. They don’t go with the dress either.

The fabric of the dress looks cheap, and so does the design. If I was Jenny Packham, I wouldn’t want my name on it. OK, it’s not as bad as most of Stella McCartney’s work, but bordering on it.

As for Kate’s legs, they look fine, but the deal is we really don’t need to be seeing them. Save it for your private time, Kate.

      • Pixelated says:

+100 @ Vava “Save it for your private time, Kate.”
She never will. It’s because the only thing she really has is her body.
It’s party in the front, business in the back.

  17. PHD Gossip says:

I think she is wearing a wiglet. Look at the profile shots of her.

    • Reader says:

I definitely think she was earlier in the day, when she had her hair pulled back, but at night I think that’s just her real hair (although she may have a few extensions fitted underneath to give it that much volume).

      • Mina says:

        Wiglet watch!!

It’s made to look as though some of the back of her hair is pulled back on the close-up shot, but that’s actually the wiglet. I’ve missed you, wiggie!

    • LadySlippers says:

      Wiglet Watch! Lol

I didn’t even look until you guys mentioned it but in the close-up shot (pic where she has a funny expression) you can totally see the fault line between her normal hair and the wiglet or fall. Not only that, the wiglet is a different colour and didn’t take the curl like her natural hair did.

      • FLORC says:

Was thinking the same for the earlier event.
Bluhare! Bring out the Wiglet Wagon! I’ll grab the pumpkin tea!

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Florc•

Blu still has the keys? Is she a better driver than you?!??? 😉

      • FLORC says:

She took issue with how I made her grab the wheel while I leaned out the side to grab random wiglets off of random heads. I had a 90% success rate at it actually being a wiglet. Those are odds you can take to Vegas!

She said it wasn’t “safe” and when I leaned out the side I put more pressure on the gas pedal. She threw around a few “liability”, “endagering”, and “school zone”. So, yea. She has the keys still.

      • bluhare says:

Not to mention, FLORC spikes her tea. 🙂

      • FLORC says:

        Bluhare
Technically it’s not tea after the 1st cup. Just capri sun and moonshine.
My wiglet watching eagle eyes only get sharper with the some shine.

Kate was glowing last night. On contrary of how she looked in the morning. I hate the dress. It’s for an older woman and not a royal one. On the other hand, hair and makeup were on point. I prefer her hair down. Updos and ponytails don’t suit her IMO.

  19. Courtney says:

I want to book a transatlantic flight just to steal all of her eyeliner. Is her makeup artist trolling her, or does she honestly think that looks good?

  20. Enn says:

I actually love the whole thing, and I’m usually not a fan of mullet dresses. I covet those shoes.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

It’s a tad too short, like she’s Forced to be elegant, but wants to still play the sexpot with the short dress underneath.
I love her hair down and up on both the outings, mer hair looked great , glossy, shiney and the Color of the dress was beautiful.

  21. The Original Mia says:

Tacky. The Kardashian sisters have all done that style dress. Someone said last night that she was trying to be sexy like Amal during her wedding weekend.

And I’ll say it again, she may have had morning sickness, but no HG. She’s gained weight, not lost it. She looks healthy. Happy to be back in the limelight.

    • Olenna says:

Ditto. I was thinking that she was very ill, but seeing her in these photos and related videos, I think was I duped by the HG hype! LOL!

    • MinnFinn says:

ITA really, really tacky. I cringed when I first saw the photos.

Her incessant need/desire to reveal and show off her body is a very very sad statement about the inner workings of her identity.

      • maggie says:

This isn’t 1814 it’s 2014! You’re only young once so may as well enjoy it. She’s dressed respectfully and her legs are an awesome asset.

      • notasugarhere says:

She’s not dressed according to royal protocol. Yes, there is protocol and yes, she’s supposed to be following it. You may not like that, but the job has a dress code.

  22. Chinoiserie says:

She was doing something different for once. It was not that bad even if it was not perfect. And I loved the shoes.

  23. Arya Martell says:

I think this is going to be the cranky pregnancy.

  24. Dany says:

This dress looks so good when she´s standing still, but when she moves and you see how short the front is it turns tacky.
She could look so good in evening gowns, even in this dress, but she manages to look not very elegant every single time. It´s her poor posture and hair everywhere. That cheapens every look. Europe´s other royal women know how to appear elegant and Princesslike, why not Kate? Celebes on red carpets look more regal.

  25. Okie says:

Baby blue in October? Those shoes? *shaking my head*

As for the skirt blowing up, I’m going to guess the emphasis was on “coat” in “coat dress.” She’s wearing something beneath, and doesn’t seem worried about the wind blowing (no motion to tuck the coat down), so I don’t think this is as much of an issue.

    • Nikki says:

Why, is it bad to wear baby blue in October? I know the old rule was no white shoes after Labor Day, but have never heard of any other color rules. The color was the thing I really liked: yummy!

      • Okie says:

Traditionally, pastels are reserved for the spring, when everything is coming back to life. Autumnal colors are more earthy and rich — everything from browns and greens to luxe jewel tones. The baby blue here paired with the shoes (which are a bit twee in my opinion) gives off a spring vibe. Might just be me, though, and I get that.

    • Blythe says:

Okie pretty much hit the nail on the head.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Okie•

I don’t think Kate has a clue about fashion and/or doesn’t give a hoot about fashion and her choice of colour supports that theory. She showed the ignorance or lack of caring (whichever it might be) while on tour in NZ/Australia. It was fall there yet she wore colours appropriate for *our* hemisphere’s season — not there’s. Plus, I find it odd she seems to rarely get things hemmed, once again her dress was too long (similar to the first outing post-severe morning sickness with George).

Overall, I think ‘she’s almost there but not quite’. And I’m not a fan of Packham at all.

      • Okie says:

I hadn’t noticed that about Aus/NZ, but you’re right. I also think blue is a safe color for Kate, and so she falls back on it often, in any and all shades.

My problem with Packham is that it usually reads “young starlet at her first Oscars.” There’s something safe about the label — a way to wear formal clothing without looking too mature or going out too far. Still there are plenty of other designers who do classic looks, and I think better.

    • angelique says:

I was surprised that her Alex McQueen dress wasn’t lined. Surprising for a supposedly bespoke dress from a major design house.
This makes me wonder if it really was a McQueen. Maybe they didn’t have time to put the lining in. Strange but very cheap looking. I would ask for my money back.
Someone mentioned she looks like an airline stewardess. Bingo!

As for the baby blue, I don’t know where to start. She definitely looked tarty but that is her m.o. so why change now. Honestly when I saw the pic of her giving an award to a little boy, I thought she looked ridiculously overdressed. She did this once before at a Sports award banquet with Will and Harry, not long after the wedding. She wore a long black velvet gown to an event that did not require such formality. Wrong dress, wrong event. I hope she figures this out one day.

      • FLORC says:

The bespoke McQueen isn’t great McQueen. It’s classic Burton imo. For whatever reason her customized outfits from there are poorly fitten and tailored. The fabric at the hem can be frayed too. Just all around these custom pieces look cheap. Just cheap all around. Who ever looks at those bespoke designer dresses and thinks it’s worth the cost should talk to me. I’ve got a bridge to sell them.

Regarding the velvet gown. It was early in her royal career. She got all dressed up for a gala. I didn’t fault her for indulging because I would too. That gown was amazing.

For whatever reason without fail if William is around Kate’s hemline hikes up.

  26. RobN says:

Whether women like her outfit or not, my husband just walked behind me and gave her a little whistle. I told him the dress was getting ripped apart and he couldn’t figure out why, pretty color and covered up but still showing a little leg.

It’s easy to see what could have been done slightly differently on the dress, but I think the average person who doesn’t care about necklines and sleeves, sees the overall effect and thinks she looks pretty great.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

One of the Reporters hinted on Twitter Who Saw her in person said that the dress was definately aimed towards men. Haha

    • Christina says:

My bf asked where the rest of her skirt went and was perturbed when I tried to explain the style, lol

  27. moot says:

Am I the only one who cares more about who was named Wildlife Photographer Of The Year? Who was it? Now, I have to Google it.

Ah, here it is: The Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014, Grand title winner, Adult, went to Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols, USA. The Young Grand title winner was Carlos Perez Naval, Spain.

The imagery here http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/wpy/gallery/2014/index.html is better than the photos of whatever Kate wore. Trust me.

    Your welcome.

  28. kri says:

I despise an indecisive hem-particularly the mullet. Her legs are magnificent.

  29. Eleonor says:

I like the color and the shoes.

  30. Irishserra says:

I don’t like the cut of the dress, but I do love the color and I think her legs are fantastic. Still wish she would make some changes to her skin, hair and makeup.

  31. Lucinda says:

I remember early on there were comments about the royal dress code. A point of particular interest was that Kate was expected to always wear hosiery. Clearly she’s not doing that. I strongly suspect there is huge pressure for her to have babies. Because that is the only thing they truly care about, they let other things slide (like her work schedule). But the more I watch her, the more I believe her way of dressing is her silent rebellion.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      +1

    • hmmm says:

Agreed that it seems that Waity leads with defiance.

I usually don’t wear a tinfoil hat but…. this dress reminds me of Diana’s ‘revenge’ dress the day of Charles’ interview where he admitted adultery. There was a state banquet happening at the same time but this guarantees Waity is the talk of the town. And it’s weird she wasn’t scheduled for the state banquet.

  32. maddelina says:

I must be looking at different photos from most of you because I think she looks absolutely beautiful. William did well in choosing her as his wife.

    • notasugarhere says:

I think it would be better if he’d chosen someone who could do the job well, instead of saying things like, “Can you test the smell by smelling it.” The way she looks is irrelevant to her job. Dressing to protocol (which she isn’t doing) IS relevant, but her looks are irrelevant.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

William chose a lightweight and a woman Who behaved as his doormat for him, for ten years to Get the ring.
The UK press continues as Kate and William Syncophants, they don’t question much of anything. She and William can hide away for weeks, Even when she wasn’t having HG. They spend money like water on homes, while Kate still mostly lives with her mother and does miniscule royal work.

  33. dawnchild says:

Actually liked the dress, especially the color.

    The hair…(sigh)

The shoes…interesting change from the relentless nude. I think she’s trying to up the shoe game (now that Amal is apparently the most influential Brit in fashion); but kind of cute-sy/weird. Sleek gown with flouncy shoes…not good. Someone said classic pointed stilettos would be better… I agree.

And always thought she had great legs,…when she didn’t starve herself to a lollipop. Even better now.

  34. anne_000 says:

All hail the Queen of Wag!

DM has photos showing higher thigh exposures in both the coat-dress & mini-skirt gown than the photos seen in this article here. The exposure is even more when she climbs stairs as the mini-skirt rises up.

For someone who’s been having such horrible HG for the past two months, she sure has gained more weight than she had before it. Nice to know that though she had to cancel every charity event during this time, she got well enough to attend the non-charity fancy gigs, a welcoming ceremony for visiting diplomats and an evening gala.

  35. hmmm says:

The woman has absolutely no sense of occasion or place. Looks like she’s on the red carpet for a Hollywood premiere. This is WAG territory. And she sure looks hale and hearty for someone devastated by HG.

  36. Chris2 says:

Can’t dig that dress at all…..it’s like something Per Una would sell (though with extra ruffles and a diamanté brooch)
. I don’t think the Mullet lends itself to a conservative interpretation at all……you need to go fully subversive, not fainthearted like this.
I get the impression the US has a lot of codes about colour/season that are alien to Britain. Though I loathe pale blue, it’s certainly not in any way incorrect or a faux pas.
T’other thing was a complaint that Kate ‘displays too much’ of her figure. Well! Most of the Euro royal gals wear short skirts, for one thing. For another, did not the sainted Diana do this all the time, once even unto (almost ) nipplegate? Fook me, if I had a great physique I’m sure I’d revel in it too. She’s hardly Jodie Marsh, after all.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Chris2•

It’s actually not an American thing — it’s a fashion thing. Perhaps we hear about it more than y’all but the fashion houses still use the rules. You’ll see HUGE differences in the colours, textures, and designs from a Spring line than a Fall line. The rules are why.

Diana wore shorter skirts after her formal separation from Charles — partly to flout royal protocol. Lol

As for most Royal ladies, they tend to still have skirts that hit the knee or are just slightly above it. For most — this is still a tad too high.

      • Chris2 says:

        Ladyslippers
Just re the pastels/autumn hues: reason was that some few peeps on here have at times expressed almost outrage about this, that there actually is a date after which certain shades are outlawed.
Conversely, look in any High St store here and current winter coats are baby blue or pink. Maybe just a great coincidence, and it made me wonder again about that (as you say, erroneous) Impression re US wardrobes.

I do of course know fashion, and the comments I refer to were all about decorum, not what was on the catwalk. Whatever the hell they meant though, my own comment was innocently about a cultural/traditionsl thing and not anti-American. 🙂

      • FLORC says:

        Chris2
Regarding decorum… Many of those rules and guidelines have been laid to rest for some time now. Those who hold tight are a fading breed.

    • Vava says:

Light colors, if fashioned in winter/fall fibers seem OK to me. You know, winter white wool, for example.

This knit looks cheap, you can see the seams on the mullet skirt, and Kate just looks like she’s trying too hard to show off her legs. Makes her look like a tacky WAG. This dress could be saved if it had a fully enclosed long skirt and worn with simple shoes. If she’d had her hair out of the way, the jewelry could be seen. Instead, she opts to flaunt her legs, hide behind the curtain of hair, and just comes across looking like a tacky teenaged cheerleader. UGH.

      • FLORC says:

        Vava
        You’re so right!
It’s about the fabric. The jersey knit is a summer fabric. Something to wick sweat away while dancing in a club. If there was more of a woolen texture to the dress and a longer front hem it would have been more of a winter wonderland blue. Her shoes would have had to be more to that theme instead of a warm cream.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Diana had a demeanor of class and elegance.
Also Diana didn’t do most of her shorter dresses until separation from Charles was in the works.

Diana did do a few mullet type dresses, but she always looked quite classy. IMO
Kate’s outer top dress is pretty, elegant, but the under reveal-dress borders on Waggish/hoochie.

Kate’s body looks great though, she looked like this when she was dating William in the earlier years. She had a healthy, athletic figure. She’s always had gorgeous legs , until she went on her mass dieting down episodes, so it’s really good to Now see her once again looking healthy. She looks much better with a bit of weight on. I hope she realizes that, after the pregnancy is over.

      • FLORC says:

She really does look better with this weight. Judging from how quickly she lost it post george I’m pretty certain she’ll drop the weight as quickly as she can.

  37. Chammy says:

The dress is a mistake from a strategic point of view:

The dress shows Kate’s legs: she has worked out during the last couple of weeks. Now can a woman with severe HG work out on a regular basis?
(As MinnFinn had pointed out: comment #7
    http://www.celebitchy.com/393506/pregnant_princess_kate_covers_people_shes_back_to_her_smiling_bubbly_self/

The dress shows Kate’s fake tan: she has had fake tan as her hands are lighter than her legs. Now can a woman with severe HG stand the smell of fake tan?

  38. Christina says:

I’m in a bad and snarky mood today.

She looks 50. Not in a “fresh for 50” way which is odd considering she looks Botoxed here in the forehead. I’m not seeing any of the weight loss she would need to have for HG. Blue dress is completely tasteless. Wouldn’t wear it to an 80’s red carpet costume party. I see she is back to the wiglets.

    Come at me.

    • Olenna says:

“Come at me”. No way! You get a pass from me for the HG comment. Spot on.

      • Christina says:

Haha, much love, Dame Olenna <3

      • Olenna says:

Back atcha, Christina! BTW, I’m feeling full of shade today cuz I think the Princess and her PR team got one over on me with this morning sickness business. But, fool me once…

      • Vava says:

You’re not going to get any shade from me!

Duchess lacks taste, as evidenced by this ensemble.

No evidence of horrible HG, either. She looks healthier than usual!

  39. Feeshalori says:

This outfit looks like it couldn’t make up its mind whether it should be a gown or dress. If it was one or the other, I’d have really liked it but not in its mishmash state of two styles. That mullet effect is awful. A floor-length gown with a discreet slit would have been just the thing for this event. I do like the gathered waist and think a stronger jewel color would have suited Kate better. Those 3/4 length sleeves also give it too casual a look which I really dislike. It gives the effect that she rolled up her sleeves so that she wouldn’t get her clothing dirty. But that only happens when you’re doing work, right?

And I can’t believe that a woman who reputedly suffered through a terrible bout of HG would look so fresh with this weight gain, tan and toned legs.

    • Feeshalori says:

Oh, and I’m meh over her jewels. That dress called for a statement piece. But if she continues to her hair draped all over covering her neck and still doesn’t realize how to wear statement pieces, she may as well wear these type of inordinately priced but lightweight items.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

I Wonder if Kate was glued to magazines of Amal and liked the mullet?

      🙂

  40. may23 says:

This is a perfect prom dress back in the 90s. Don’t like it at all.

  41. corneila says:

I think Kate looks fab! If you like Kate’s style you should check out eyeni.ca

  42. trendy says:

you’d ALL have legs like that if you had millions in the bank, didn’t have to work, had your own gym, a nanny, a cook and probably a dietitian.

  43. Elena says:

    Kate looks great!

  44. wow says:

Her legs are amazing. Not too fond of the dress but she makes it work with her long, toned legs. Not a lot of women can pull off that look, let alone a pregnant woman. She looks amazing.

  45. Christina says:

This woman clearly never had HG, so we can all give it up now. The tan and muscles make me think they had an ultra secret holiday while she was supposed to be in Berkshire. Ridiculous. And don’t come at me with comments about how expecting her to work is too much, since I am commenting in the midst of a double waitressing shift to pay my rent this month with menstrual pains from hell, so I will not be sympathetic to her even though I love all of you.

    • FLORC says:

Your points in this and your other comments are valid and hard to ignore. Outside of the pr stating she has hg as reason to cancel her events there isn’t much else.
Kate carrying bags to train, Kate having dinner out with William. I bet Kate had some rough morning sickness. Just as viewers of her. She’s having a normal pregnancy. I would not believe she’s been suffering as some proKate/royal outlets have been claiming.
It’s a thin line though. Her pr has claimed this, but they’ve also claimed some bold faced lies.
And her gym at her parents have tanning so I think there’s that.

    • Vava says:

Totally agree. KP has been lying. She may have had morning sickness, but not HG. She’s a delicate snowflake though, don’t you know? 🙂

I think she’s been on vacation somewhere. And William and Kate are laughing about it because they got away with it.
