Ewan McGregor thinks autograph seekers are ‘parasitical lowlifes & wankers’

Did you know Ewan McGregor is currently on Broadway, starring in a revival of Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing? I didn’t know that, honestly. Ewan has been in NYC for a few months already, working and previewing the play. To promote his Broadway debut, Ewan sat down with Details for an interview that covered a lot of bases in a short time – you can read the full piece here. Some fun facts: Ewan is 43 years old and he has a college-aged daughter. He even says his oldest, Clara, has started college in NYC. Isn’t that crazy? Some highlights:

Why he’s never done Broadway before: “I was never asked to do it! No, I’ve got a wife and kids, and I was never willing to move my whole family from L.A. to New York. It’s such a clever play, and I get to be smart and a bit smug and arrogant every night. And I didn’t have to come up with any of these clever thoughts on my own, which is the beauty of being an actor, really.”

Becoming a father at the age of 24: “You’re very idealistic at that age. You think you know it all, and in a way, you do. I see it in my daughter Clara, who’s just starting college in New York City. I remind her that I’ll be giving her a call every night after the play is over: “Where are we going?” She’d be like, “F–k you, Dad. Get out of my life.” You’re starting college, Clara…but I’m coming with you.”

Star Wars fans: “I don’t have any experience with them. I’ve never been to one of the conventions. The people I meet are the f–kers who want me to sign Star Wars photos so they can sell them on the Internet or the people at premieres who are crushing children against barriers to get me to sign their f–king picture of Obi-Wan Kenobi. They’re not fans—they’re parasitical lowlifes and f–king wankers.”

Whether The Phantom Menace is really all that bad: “I watched it once, at the premiere, so I’m not in a good position to judge. They had a tall order, the three films I did. The fans waited so long and wanted to feel like they did when they watched the first film, but they were grown-ups by that time. I don’t mind the criticism. I’ve heard it to my face.”

He was partying a lot around that time: “I did party very hard. I used to like it. Because of Trainspotting and Shallow Grave, I was very well-known in Britain, where I lived then. At the end of the millennium, I was meeting people who had an idea of who I was before I even talked to them. I would recognize this look on their face as they were seeing if they were right or wrong about me. It makes you feel very lonely. I partied hard, wherever I was, whenever I was. It wasn’t Star Wars’ fault.”

Whether he’s done a film just for the money: “There have been films I’ve done where I’ve been very happy to have reached my last day on set, but not many. And I’ve never started a film with anything other than enthusiasm.”

He thinks The Island is a good movie: “I did make a good movie with Michael Bay! The Island got hammered by reviewers because it was his turn to get hammered. We made his best movie, don’t you think? Well, there are no great movies made anymore. [Lawrence of Arabia director] David Lean’s not with us.”

[From Details]

There’s a lot more in the interview, like how Ewan hates when films get too fancy and there are lots of tracking shots and cranes and all of that. He also confirms that he and Danny Boyle have buried the hatchet – back in the day, Boyle gave Ewan the lead in The Beach, only to recast him with Leo DiCaprio at the last minute. Boyle and McGregor held a grudge for YEARS, but they finally settled their tiff and Ewan even says he would be up for a Trainspotting sequel.

And who is yelling at poor Ewan about Star Wars? It’s not his fault those movies sucked. If anything, Ewan is one the better parts of those films.

  1. mimif says:

I kind of want to ask him for his autograph.

  2. Jade says:

    He’s so hot.

  3. Dara says:

His Obi Wan was absolutely the best part of those movies, actually he was the the best part of many of his movies. Love him, forever and ever – I’ll watch him just looking at a phone book – he doesn’t even need to read it out loud, although with his accent that would definitely be a bonus.

    • Snarky says:

I agree. He, Liam Neeson, and Samuel L. Jackson had the same crap lines and idiotic character situations as the rest of the cast. At least they didn’t fall asleep in front of the camera.

      • lower-case deb says:

his story about his Velvet Goldmine shoot with Christian Bale still has me laughing. bet he’s a fun guy on set.

  4. sarah says:

he needs to do more full frontal scenes…great stuff

  5. decorative item says:

Who doesn’t hate people who crush kids against barriers?

    • Liv says:

Yep, I think he doesn’t mean people who ask for autographs, but people who collect them to make money out of it. Or whatever they do with it.

Also his comment about is daughter is so cute! “F-k Dad, get out of my life!” Ha!

Does anyone know where he lives now? I thought still in Britain.

I was running on a treadmill in my old gym which was in a hotel. As I was getting off I realized the non descript blonde guy next to me was Ewan McGregor and I wanted to die.
I had jut seen Down With Love and I am a huge Star Wars fan! How could I have missed him?
Then the girls that worked there told me Rodrigo Santoro, the gorgeous Brazilian actor from Love Actually and 300, was the other guy next to me on the other treadmill.
I was in the yummiest sandwich ever and I had no idea.
I didn’t see Ewan the rest of the week but Rodrigo was very nice.
    I love you Obi Wan!

  7. captain hero says:

Ewan did a Roman Polanski film, some political thriller. So he is not in a position to call anyone else a low life.

    • manta says:

I was curious to see if he would get the same amount of vitriol as Jodie Foster or Kate Winslet. After Carnage, many stated they had lost all respect for them and would never see another film with them.

Funny how McGregor or Brosnan don’t fall into the same category. Apparently if you possess the ability to make most women weak in the loins, shooting a movie with Polanski isn’t so degrading or despicable.

      • captain hero says:

Exactly, the mama June post blew up but everyone seems to be ignoring the fact that ewan McGregor chose to work with a convicted child rapist because he’s soooo cuuuute

  8. v1nc3nz00 says:

there goes my Ewan’s authograph chasing

  9. Adrien says:

He should borrow Jennifer Lawrence’s umbrella to ward off fans.

  10. TheCountess says:

Reading that it is specifically “Star Wars” fanatics trying to hawk memorabilia, he’s certainly right. These aren’t ‘regular’ fans by any stretch and I can believe they’d stop at nothing to obtain something they can sell.

  11. Adrien says:

He was pertaining to a particular set of fans not random fans he met on the streets.

  12. Dany says:

Oh Ewan my eternal crush 😀
He´s sweet when you met him and gives his “regular fans” autographs all the time. The ebay-autograph seekers are hardcore and act like idiots, all they see is money

  13. starrywonder says:

I don’t blame him for the crappiness of Star Wars I blame George Lucas. I dont get why people get on actors about the script and directing. I mean if their acting is wooden than that’s one thing (looking at you Hayden Christiansen) but he was one of the best parts of the movie.

    • mernymerlyn says:

George Lucas is a terrible director. I love his films but all of the acting is so wooden.
You know you are not doing a good job when you get a wooden performance out of Samuel Jackson.

  14. Veronica says:

I think the headline is a little misleading; I know exactly what kind of fan he’s talking about, and I agree with him about it. I like that he doesn’t trash his old movies, either – he didn’t tiptoe around the issue that they weren’t great, but he made it clear he didn’t regret them either. I’m not entirely thrilled about some of the directors he’s worked with, but I have always enjoyed him as an actor.

Otherwise, HOLY SHIT, when I did get old enough that my old celeb crushes have college aged children??

  15. Dani says:

I actually really enjoyed The Island. I mean, it was kind of obvious and lacked a good plot but it was enjoyable in the end. He was also super hot in it. He can call me after the play, I definitely won’t stand him up.

  16. saxamaphone357 says:

I’ve always read he can be kind of an ass, but my hubs and I watched ‘The Long Way Round’ and ‘The Long Way Down’ on Netflix, and I found him very cute and likeable. Plus you get to see his butt a couple times.

  17. 'P'enny says:

Long before Benedict C, David Tennant and the ilk, we had Ewan!

one of the most hardworking actors and done some really interesting work, I’ve followed him from Shallow Grave to… Moulin Rouge, stopped at Star Wars, but i’ve lately picked up his films again and Salmon Fishing in Yemen is delightful.

As actors go he is a survivor and he does some dross – cough ‘Dan Brown’ and yet he keeps coming back.

  18. Party says:

He’s referring to those who sell the stuff online, not the old fashioned, genuine autograph seekers.

  19. captain hero says:

I just found out he did a movie with woody Allen too. This loser really does keep poor company.

  20. Mallory says:

But how would he KNOW who was selling them? Do people just tell them they want it signed to sell it? I doubt people would actually tell him that. So how on earth would he know who was genuine and who wasn’t? That’s the problem with what he said.

  21. Lauraq says:

I actually liked the Star Wars prequels, and I know plenty of other people who do too. They’re not as good as the originals, but they’re still fun.
My favorite move with him, though, is A Life Less Ordinary with Cameron Diaz. Hilarious.
