Jessica Simpson still talking about ‘butthead’ ex

Jessica Simpson keeps on talking… and talking and talking. When we last heard from Jessica, her statements included such gems as calling one of her exes a “butthead” and remaining remarkably classy about all of the “controversy” about her weight gain.

Her newest statements came at yet another concert. At least this time she wasn’t performing at a chili cook-off, so at least we can be grateful for that. Jess told her fans that she hoped that they would follow her “career” rather than “follow what people say about me”. She also talked about her heroes in the country music business, like Dolly Parton and her boyfriend’s hero in the football business, John Elway.

Jessica Simpson got candid with her fans at a show in Denver on Saturday.

Clad in Daisy Dukes and white platform pumps, the singer, 28, opened the show at the Pepsi Center with a cover of the Nancy Sinatra classic “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’.”

“Can I get a yee-haw?” she asked the crowd. As her show went on, she got more confessional.

“I don’t know how many of you have followed my career. I hope you don’t just follow what people say about me,” she said, presumably referring to the hype over her weight gain.

Simpson — whose last two films went straight to DVD — then added, “Hopefully, you actually follow whatever career I have.”

She also told the crowd she has Colorado roots. “I lived here when I was in kindergarten. I lived in Littleton,” said Simpson, who grew up in Texas. “I have always admired John Elway,” a retired Colorado quarterback.

She said she and her father Joe once waited two hours to get Elway’s autograph when she was a little girl. “We still have it,” she said. “For Tony [Romo, her beau], John Elway has always inspired him.” She then launched into a rendition of “You’re My Sunday,” which she said she wrote for Romo.

Before belting out “Pray Out Loud,” she talked about growing up with her father, a former minister. “As a family, we’ve always stayed together, prayed together,” Simpson said. “They taught me a lot of values. I’m sane because of them!”

She also praised Dolly Parton for being “such an inspiration. Dolly gave me the confidence to be who I want to be. I can be whatever I want to be.” Simpson said the title track to her first country album, Do You Know, was written by Parton.

Before leaving the stage, she dedicated “Remember That” to those who “have ever been in an abusive relationship.” She didn’t identify the ex that hurt her but called him “a butthead.”

Simpson told audience members who have been abused to “find strength, value yourself and take heart.”

Jaybird’s right, we should admire Jessica’s spirit and her inability to let negative press get her down. She’s a relatively harmless person – you can tell, even calling an ex a “butthead” was pretty harsh for her standards. I’m still wondering who it was that Jessica was referring to. Nick Lachey? John Mayer? Or perhaps one of the guys she was rumored to be hooking up with back in the day, like Adam Levine of Maroon 5, or Johnny Knoxville. Who knows.

The only thing I find the least bit objectionable is the whole thing with Jessica’s father teaching her “values”. I’m not buying that, even if Joe Simpson used to be a man of God. Men of God don’t talk about their daughter’s breasts in the press. No way, no how.

Honestly, if I went to a concert and half of it was the performer yammering on, I’d get a little annoyed. I came for the music, not to hear every minutae of their lives. The best show I saw was by the Buzzcocks– they were playing before they even got on stage, and were still playing as they got off– no breaks between songs whatsoever.

I know this is going to sound terrible, and I really think she looks great with a few extra pounds (she looked like a bobblehead at her thinnest), but the header picture immediately reminded me of Godzilla stomping all over Tokyo making those crazy screeching noises. It’s just the pose and the facial expression, I swear!

    HAHA @ iheartlasagne

that was great. She was probably referring to John Mayer as the butthead. If I recall they had some troubles and he was made be the bad guy or something. But hey what’s new.

Maybe I’m just not paying enough attention, but does the media also report every detail of what other performers say at all of their concerts?

I think it’s pretty clear that Jessica talks about the same things at each concert in relation to her songs — one song is about Tony Romo, another song is about an ex who treated her badly, etc. It’s to relate her personal experiences to the songs, and she basically says the same stuff at each concert.

So why do media outlets keep writing stories about everything she says at the concerts like they’re new pieces of material? It causes critics to say Jessica talks about her love life too much, but she’s not doing so to interviewers – she’s doing so for fans at concerts to connect the songs with her life. I’m just really tired of People and US Magazine writing “new” stories about Simpson’s comments. She’s just saying the same stuff in different ways!

i don’t care for her music but i have to say she seems like a nice girl…not overly bright, but sweet. her sister, on the other hand, seems bitchy to me.

  6. Tony says:

Poster child for lacking talent and running off at the mouth.

  7. HEB says:

I hope she’s talking about Meyer, probably is

  8. Lizzie says:

@Sarah.. I completely agree with you! Jessica does it to relate her songs to her life which many artists do at their concerts. Sometimes I do feel she’s a little dumb and doesn’t realize how her jokes/remarks are taken by others but overall shes one of the most stable celebs out there. She hasn’t shown people her vajayjay, hasn’t been drunk, isn’t known to be a skank etc. She might not be the brightest tool in the shed but she’s better than Paris, Lindsay, Misha, even better than a few of those underage Disney girls and the list goes on.

  9. Ggirl says:

    Jessica Simpson is very mediocre
in the talent department but she seems to be a nice person. Her father, Papa Joe, needs to be strung up somewhere. The first time I saw him on The Newlyweds, he struck me as cold as ice having ice water run through his veins. Any ass can call themselves a “preacher” or “minister”. He is perverted and has been misguided running Jessica’s career. She needs to ditch Joe already!

  10. RAN says:

    Agree w/Ggirl

  11. Nudgie says:

She has to be talking about John Meyer…he IS a butthead.

Scores with a lot of chicks though … ;P

  12. Ana says:

I know what you mean about the picture looking like she was about to stomp all over the audience! I thought the same thing!

  13. sissoucat says:

Nice girl. Looking good and healthy.

  14. jess says:

i think people really shortchange jessica…if you remember back to her debut album…the girl can BELT. im not sure what happens.

either way $20 says there is a baby in that bump…
