Anne Hathaway refused to shake hands with an Argentine journo because of ‘Ebola’

wenn21866562

I’m not OCD, nor am I clean freak. I like to work in a controlled mess – things may seem disorganized around me, but I have my own system. But as I get older, I do get more germ-phobic. I’m really good about washing my hands as soon as I come back from any excursion and I often shower twice a day. As I get older, the less I like casual physical contact too. Unless I’m formally meeting someone for the first time, I don’t like to shake hands and I’m not a big hugger either. So… I’m kind of feeling like an Anne Hathaway Apologist in this situation. Apparently, Anne refused to shake hands with a Argentine journalist during the Interstellar junket. She refused to shake his hand because of Ebola. Fair or unfair?

Anne Hathaway just gave more fuel to the Hatha-haters. An Argentinian journalist flew to Los Angeles to attend a screening of the star’s new movie, Interstellar, and was snubbed because the actress was afraid she would catch Ebola.

Each one of the film’s stars shook Alexis Puig’s hand after he interviewed them – everyone except Hathaway, that is. The offended journalist took to Twitter to air his grievances against the Oscar winner.

Puig tweeted, “Anne Hathaway no me dio la mano ‘por miedo al ebola’ #soyunperiodistadeltercermundo,” which translates to “Anne Hathaway didn’t shake my hand because she was she was afraid of ebola #I’mAThirdWorldJournalist.”

Soon after, Puig followed up with a tweet describing how Interstellar’s other A-list cast members were more than gracious. Instead of rebuffing the journalist, they embraced him. He tweeted, “Christopher Nolan, Matthew McConaughey y Jessica Chastain estuvieron geniales en las entrevistas (y ninguno me nego la mano) Toma Anne!”

Translation: “Christopher Nolan, Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain were genial in the interviews (and none of them denied me their hands). Take that, Anne!”

So far, no cases of Ebola have been reported in Argentina. When Puig returned to Argentina, he turned to Twitter once more to give the Les Miserables actress another jab. He posted, “Gracias a todos por sus comentarios. Por suerte ya estoy en Buenos Aires, Argentina (ciudad y país libre de Ebola) …y por casa Anne?,” which translates to, “Thank you to everyone for your comments. Luckily I’m already in Buenos Aires, Argentina (city and country free of Ebola)…and at home Anne?”

[From Radar]

I’m including the instigating tweet below. Here’s my question: did Annie refuse to shake hands with EVERY journalist she met and this is just the one guy who complained, or did she single out this one “third world” journalist because she associated “foreign” with “Ebola”? I would excuse it if she refused to shake hands with everybody – it’s not just Ebola, it’s also flu season and everyone is particularly germy this time of year. Actors doing these junkets are probably going through several bottles of Purell a day because they shake so many hands. But yeah… this doesn’t sound good for Annie. “Third world” does not equal “Ebola.”

    What a freaking idiot.

    • Lori says:

I think this officially makes her a douchbag

    • mia girl says:

The journalist? Yes he’s a freakin idiot.

      • vavavoom says:

Agreed. He’s assuming all of it. Just making a headline to get some attention.

Unless she said to him ‘I won’t shake your hand because you may have ebola’, He seems to be making it all up in the name of sensationalism.

    • Belle Epoch says:

The journalist felt snubbed. OF COURSE she has come up with an excuse now. If she had a cold, which I don’t believe for a minute, she should have told him so – to avoid exactly this situation. She’s a celebrity, she’s at an event that calls for some politeness, and she blew it. I’m not sure why everyone is hating on the journalist and accusing him of lying. Does this guy lie a lot? Does he have a habit of antagonizing stars for no reason? If so, how does he stay in business? Have any of the other people at the event come forward to verify Anne’s “cold”? She needs Purell – or she needs to come clean about not shaking hands with anyone, ever.

      • mia girl says:

        @belle
I hear what you are saying about professional courtesy, but IMO the journalist is an idiot for bringing Ebola into the mix. There is no way Anne or her people told him or inferred she was not shaking his hand because of Ebola.
He obviously did feel snubbed but instead of making a point about a snub (which with Anne’s history is enough to get everyone’s Hathahate on) he’s going all out with this Ebola angle.
        That’s why I think he’s an idiot.

      • Lucinda says:

You don’t have to have a cold to choose not to shake hands with someone. Shaking hands is a very easy way to spread and catch illness, especially when shaking hands with lots of people. We don’t know if she refused to shake hands with everyone or just him. I’m guessing she was avoiding handshaking in general.

I was on a cruise last summer and went to an event where we met the captain. There was a sign specifically asking guests NOT to shake hands with the captain to avoid spreading illness. My point is I think the journalist is over-reacting and using this as an opportunity to gain a little notoriety at her expense.

    • GirlyGirl says:

If the word “Ebola” in the headline was replaced with “Stupidity” it would be a tad more accurate

    • Nilo says:

Exactly what I was thinking. Disgraceful.

  2. Abbott says:

AnnE said she wasn’t shaking hands with anyone because she was coming down with a cold. Journo is trying to instigate some Hathahate but didn’t get the memo we’ve all moved on to JLaw.

    • Jules says:

@Abbott: Nope…poor Hathaway will always get the hate more than any other celebrity. As for Jennifer Lawrence, you may feel that way, but CB is pretty much where it was since the begining ie., some don’t like her..some do. Outside of CB, she is even more popular now than ever.

      • Abbott says:

Ehhh… JLaw gets raked over the coals at dlisted and CDaN among others.

      • Luciana says:

        Dlisted commenters dislike them both.

      • mimif says:

        Dlisted commenters dislike everybody.

      • Kiddo says:

@mimif , haha. I tried to think of someone who they universally fanned, but came up empty. They are a very inclusive group then.

      • Jules says:

Yeah, dlisted hates EVERYONE. LOL!. Christ, I have read nasty comments about Meryl Streep on there!LOL!. Cdan…eh, pretty much the same.

      • cyndi says:

No, we Dlisters do **NOT** hate everybody! Just the stupid ones (of which there are A LOT! so we can’t help that).
And everyone LOVES! Rojo Caliente!!!! 😘

      • Havana says:

@cyndi Yeah you just hate on all the popular ones that people in the real world actually like right?

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, I guessed something like that, this sounds like such manufactured BS. Lol about getting the memo.

    • lucy2 says:

If that’s the case, then I respect her for trying to keep her oncoming cold to herself. After I spent one entire Christmas break sick as a dog because some dumb lady coughed right in my face, I appreciate those who are considerate enough to try to keep germs from spreading.
The “journalist” is trying to get his 15 minutes.

      • KellyBee says:

There are pictures of Ann hugging the other cast member so I don’t see how she was keeping her cold to herself.

      • littlestar says:

I just had the flu on Friday and am now nursing a cold, so I agree. If you’re sick, or starting to feel sick, it’s common courtesy to be careful and not touch others/spread it around. This journalist is a jerk who is just looking for attention imo.

Edit: My husband said last week that he’s avoiding shaking hands with clients now after getting so sick. I know it’s perceived as rude to not shake hands, but think of the germs!

    • serena says:

LMAO can hate on both of them.

  3. Kiddo says:

Oh brother, I’m not one to apologize for her, but nowhere did she say she wouldn’t shake hands ‘because of Ebola’. It sounds like that was the journalist’s perception, or hyperbole, in order to get attention.

    • Jadeeeeyyy says:

I agree, I doubt she’d say that right in front of him.

    • Jaderu says:

Yeah, I’m thinking the journalist is stirring the pot. But why? He went in with a case of Hathahate already maybe.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Someone above said she mentioned the SHE was coming down with a cold and didn’t want to give it to HIM. which sounds a lot more likely.

      • Jaderu says:

She gets on my nerves (except on AnnE Mondays) but I think she’s going to have the unfortunate position (she’s partly to blame) of being “that actress”. No matter what she says or does now, it’s going to be misquoted, skewed and turned around to make her look bad.
“She adopted a puppy?” “Of course she did, so she could force it to watch her recite her lines…MONSTER!”

      • Kiddo says:

I think she keeps perpetuating the narrative. When she was away for a while, she wasn’t as annoying. Then she came back and dredged all the same shit up again, instead of starting fresh.

    • vavavoom says:

Totally! And you know how many people will forever believe this story now too? Ugh. It’s like the circle gossip game you’d play in school times a million.

    • Godwina says:

I agree. He sounds like he’s going in for the kill.

  4. Snazzy says:

Not fair. My respect for her just dropped a notch here. idiot child

Note: Just saw Kiddo’s comment above mine. So I ask ok, if it wasn’t Ebola, why refuse to shake someone’s hand? Either way, very impolite and unprofessional.

    • Tifygodess24 says:

It’s being reported on other sites that she said she wasn’t feeling well and wasnt shaking hands at all. Don’t know how accurate that is of course but there’s that thought?

      • Snazzy says:

Indeed, if that’s the case, then I stand corrected.
Maybe just warn them in advance so the know she’s not being rude?

      • holly hobby says:

But she thought it was ok to hug her costars? That’s what someone mentioned above too.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

Um, a few weeks ago, a horrible cold knocked out half our office including me (I rarely if ever catch what’s going around, this was a nasty thing) and HELL if I was going to shake anyone’s hand. I hate when people are sick and don’t care who they’re taking down with them. It’s actually quite considerate to not touch everyone who crosses your path. I’m just saying, I’m on her side on this one.

  5. L says:

Yea if she didn’t shake any hands because of Ebola/fly season that’s one thing.

But if she heard this guys accent and thought foreign=Ebola that’s horrible. Not to mention stupid as Argentina is in south america. This is like my bank teller telling me to look out for Ebola when she heard I was going to New Zealand.

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

The journalist is blowing this out of proportion so i am not going to hate on her for this. But as someone who was refused physical contact because of ebola, i was ready to rant all over the thread.

      • Snazzy says:

yes exactly me too 🙂 I have too many friends out there risking their lives right now coming home being treated like s**t that whenever I read about the Ebola hysteria I want to punch someone …

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

@Snazzy So true. And i did not even visit an ebola infected country but Africa=Ebola for most people obviously. The people who are trying to help should not be treated like that. I wish people would look into it more rather than spewing their ignorance like this.

      • Candy Love says:

Put there are pictures of her hugging Jessica Chastain and other cast members so she has no problem passing her germs to them but did what to get the journalist sick.

See Erinn post below for the pictuers.

      • noway says:

I want to know how the guy came up with she didn’t shake his hand because of Ebola? Did the guy cough and hack and everyone else shake hands with him but Anne? Even then why Ebola and just not flu and gross. I probably wouldn’t shake his hand either if that was the case. He is posting in Spanish so not sure how much English he spoke, but just wondering if he thought he heard something or just trying to get publicity which he got. I just don’t think Anne is that stupid about Ebola. Not saying she is a rocket scientist, but I am pretty sure she knows she wouldn’t catch it from a handshake, the flu on the other hand is a whole different thing.

    • Kiddo says:

I know it was a typo, but ‘fly season’ gives me the skeeves. Since flies like to chill on poop, they are harbingers of grossness and they’re fugly as hell. Give me a bumble or honey bee any day. Bumble Bee season is everything.

  6. sem says:

there’s first world privilege and then there’s this. completely ridiculous!

  7. LILAG says:

Don’t see any Brazilians involved in this story tho

  8. Goats on the Roof says:

Did Annie actually use Ebola as an excuse, and was she joking if she did? To me, it sounds like the journalist is trying to blow the situation out of proportion for whatever reason.

  9. Mackie says:

She said she herself was sick and she didn’t shake hands or touch anybody so she didn’t get them sick.

    • Kiddo says:

      That’s very considerate.

    • insomniac says:

But that story is so much less fun! What can we hate her for now?

More seriously, I love that color dress on her.

      • Esmom says:

I love the color but the fit is less than flattering. Reminds me of Sissy Spacek in Carrie.

      • noway says:

I think we can hate her for her makeup in the above pictures. The best professionals in the world and her foundation on her face looks horrible. Makes her look ten years older. Its one thing when poor me screws up with my self applied half asleep application, but she paid for that.

    • Erinn says:

      Photo 1

      Photo 2

She had no problem hanging off her cast mates though, did she? That’s where this seems like she didn’t want to touch people traveling. Honestly… just purell it up, and shake a few hands. Don’t blame it on not wanting to pass germs when there are photos of you hanging on to Jessica Chastain.

      • Luciana says:

Movie stars are born germs free, don’t you know, Erinn? Jessica will never pass on Anne Ebola but an argentine journo? You bet he wil. *sarcasm*

      • Kiddo says:

Hugging someone without face to face interaction is probably less likely to pass on germs, unless someone is coughing and sneezing, or actually is an Ebola patient who has vomited and has body fluids all over them. The hands are the ground zero source of flu viruses and other bacteria.

      • Wilma says:

Two different event, what about the dates?

      • Erinn says:

Wilma- if only I’d been born of such – I have a crap immune system haha.

True Kiddo, but I can’t imagine laughing into them and things like that are much safer though. I’m an obsessive hand washer especially at work. It’s a cesspool of germs in a call center… I actually need a new bottle of purell.

Wilma- the photos are from the LA interstellar premier – same as the photos in the post. You can see the same outfits. The block quote says it was the LA premier that he got snubbed.

      • Kiddo says:

Erinn, I freak out over touching door handles and my …well inside my head, not outwardly. I am a frequent handwasher, myself.

      • KC says:

I don’t know Erinn, I’m with KIDDO on this one. Before seeing those pics I thought this was suspect but Jessica’s face and hand are nowhere near her face and she’s all and keeping her face well away from/above Jessica’s. I’m an elementary teacher so I know some tricks of physical contact for limited germ exposure. And truly its a lot easier to refuse to shake a journalist’s hand than it is to avoid a costar’s active embrace. She even looks like she’s giving in with reserve.

Oh and apparently, the pics aren’t from the same day as the snub. IMO she’s excused.

      • Erinn says:

Ultimately, Kiddo – I work in an office where it’s neccesary for them to put notes in each bathroom stall reminding people to flush. I’m not touching anything I don’t have to haha.

We had some big CEO types fly in a couple of weeks ago from the main office to our NS one … I had to shake hands with one of the CEO’s and he’s an amazing, cheerful, peppy older man, but I was just thinking ‘ehhhhh you just got off of a planeeee’. But then I just grabbed the hand sanitizer once he was across the building.

KC- I thought they were from the same event. That is a different ball game I suppose. She could have come on with the cold or whatever suddenly.

  10. QQ says:

Argentina, (the CONTINENT of) Africa… Sammmmeee difference!

  11. Kristen says:

    nm.

  12. Div says:

I feel bad for Anne. She was sick and shook no one’s hand but the press always loves to do a hatchet job on her.

  13. Luca76 says:

If true that’s some BS. I’ve been considering unfriending a few ignorant people on Facebook because of this idiotic hysteria.
People need to inform themselves and turn off any news program that is making it seem like Ebola is a problem outside of a few select countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with really bad medical care. Outside of those countries there have been maybe half a dozen cases worldwide.
You can’t get Ebola from shaking hands. The last time I checked South America isn’t the same place as Africa.
There are so many bigger problems affecting so many people in the US.
The best way to stop Ebola from spreading is to support the doctors in Africa fighting the disease and stop being a bunch of self involved paranoid nut cases.

    • TuesdaysChild says:

Not just that, it isn’t even “Africa”. It’s Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea and even in those countries the majority of the populace have not been infected with Ebola.

      • Luciana says:

        Exactly.

      • Miss M says:

        Thank you!

      • Luca76 says:

I guess my comment wasn’t clear enough. ‘A few select countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are affected’ HOWEVER it’s up to the infrastructure of Africa and especially its wealthier countries to help out along with any foreign doctors willing to travel there and be on the front lines to help with this outbreak.

  14. Ana says:

You cannot be OCD, you can have OCD. Also OCD is not only tidying up, being controlling about how things are placed, being germophobic, etc, or even just about repetitive actions. It can also be about intrusive thoughts that are difficult to control and there is a whole wider range of what this illness can be about that makes day-to-day life difficult for a person.

There are so many wrong interpretations of mental illnesses that need to be corrected.

    • gooner says:

      +1
It gets on my nerves when people say “I’m OCD” when they talk about, I dunno, NEEDING to check the stove is off before they leave the house. That’s not OCD, that’s prudent. OCD would be having to turn it on and off exactly 36 times or else they cannot leave the house. (Or something like that). I don’t have it, or know anyone with it, but I believe people with OCD don’t think the condition is quirky or cute, they’re imprisoned by it.

    • Kelsey says:

Yes! Thank you Ana. I was diagnosed with post partum OCD after the birth of my second child and experiencing intrusive thoughts. Up until then I had believed it to be always wanting a clean house and had unknowingly suffered from it for years. It makes me so mad when others undermine it.

  15. Julie says:

She’s coming down with a cold? Then why was she hanging all over her Interstellar coworkers at the premiere? Oh, okay.

  16. TuesdaysChild says:

Is this ‘she was sick’ story just coming out now because this has become an issue or was she really sick? Because if she was, she/her team should have made it clear from the onset that she wasn’t going to be shaking anyone’s hands. I really doubt a journo would just begin ranting on twitter if that was made clear to him. I imagine it must have felt like quite the snub if he held out his hand to her and she simply didn’t take it.

    • Kim1 says:

How many journalists complained about her not shaking their hand?
      How many brought up Ebola?
I can’t stand this Ebola baiting. Why refer to Argentina as third world?

  17. Sozual says:

Shaking people’s hands is disgusting. We need to change things to being akin to bowing. You shake someone’s hands and touch your nose/eyes/mouth you are dunzo. The likelihood you don’t touch your face before you hit the Purell bottle is one in a million.

    • Kiddo says:

I agree Sozual. It’s not even just the germs. I get the willies after shaking a dead-fish-clammy-hand.

    • Toot says:

Agree completely. I didn’t see your post when I was making mine.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. It’s a stupid tradition and I always feel very awkward doing it, especially in large groups. Yuck.

    • serena says:

I agree, but since it’s part of her well paid job she has to do it like her other colleagues do.

    • Lucrezia says:

Co-sign. I hate it. And hand-shakers don’t take a hint. I’ve even tried lying and saying I’ve got the flu, and they’re still all: “No worries, I’ll be fine … here, shake.”

At least once the handshake is done, it’s over. Not like people who need to pat your arm while they talk. I actually backed all the way up into a wall the other day trying to dodge a touchy saleswoman. She’d basically chased me over half the store. I wonder what goes through their heads? They obviously don’t realise we’re trying to avoid them … so do they think other people have a weird habit of walking backwards during a conversation? (And do they bitch about us? “Those damn backwards-walkers, why can’t they stand still while they talk?”)

      • Kiddo says:

Walking backwards is the international symbol of “PLEASE invade my personal space boundaries so I can smell your breath up close.

    • Lex says:

      Hahaa
      Ermagherd yall are crazy. Legit.

  18. Catk says:

Journo trying to get attention. She was sick. Or she just doesn’t want to shake hands. I wouldn’t want to shake hands with 100 strangers, either.

If I were famous people would hate me. I could never be a sycophant, and would be cranky if I wanted to be. Thank goodness I can get away with it in my life!

  19. Kasia says:

Argentina is not a third world country, come on!

  20. Luciana says:

It seems Anne has failed her geography courses. F!!!!

Argentina is in South America where fortunately there hasn’t been any case of Ebola so far. I laughed when the jorno asked: “¿Por casa, Anne?” regarding the cases of Ebola in USA. Rude and unpleaseant actress.

    • Madrid says:

I think she has, but because of the one and only case of Ebola in Spain. We both speak spanish, maybe she got confused.
Our nurse is already cured btw

  21. Toot says:

I’m with Anne on not shaking hands. Some people are nasty. I always think of that Andre Tally clip where he had just picked his nose, then shook Kanye and Kim’s hand. I wish it was more common for people to bow like the Japanese.

I’m not a fan of Kanye or Kim, but that just grossed me out.

  22. Miss M says:

Unfair and it shows how ignorant she is… Did he have the symptoms? Did he expose her to his body fluids? Does she know Ebola is not airbourne like influenza virus, right? Does she know Argentina is in South America not Africa?

  23. emmie_a says:

Oh please. Shake the guy’s hand then sanitize yours. Or vice versa. I hate Anne anyways, this just adds to it. She sounds like so much freakin FUN

  24. Sara says:

i find her annoying but i also know that she wouldnt make such a mistake in public. she would never tell a journalist that she wont shake his hand because of ebola to his face. that did not happen, he made that part up. she is way too professional and eager to please and appear sweet to screw up like that.

    • Pamela says:

I agree. I think this reporter is the one looking rude. He is supposed to be a professional journalist–and he keeps goig on and on about ebola? It just looks so odd.

  25. OhDear says:

This makes no sense at all. I don’t believe that she’s that stupid or rude.

  26. arlitles says:

I think the reporter is blowing this out of proportion. How would she have known that he had ebola? Sounds like a sense of entitlement. And lots of people don’t shake others peoples hands or hug each other if they have cold. I am sorry but I can’t take anybody seriously if they go ranting on twitter about things. The reporter sounds immature and bratty. Or this could have been made up since Hatheway is a big star and he wants to make her look bad.

  27. mollie says:

Meh, I call BS on this one. I can see it going like this “I’m sorry, I’m coming down with a cold”. Journo: “Ebola? ha ha”
    Anne: “ha ha”.
Instant stupid story and I’m not buying it.
I don’t care for her much but this is just silly.

  28. serena says:

There’s no excuse to this. She was just extremely rude and ignorant.

  29. Jules74 says:

A little off topic, but that dress definitely requires some kind of foundation garment.☺

  30. FingerBinger says:

There are plenty of people that don’t shake hands and there’s wrong with it. She might be germ phobic. I don’t think you could pay Howie Mandel to shake hands. It sounds like the journalist needed to make his story more interesting.

  31. LizBonita says:

Ugh!!! What an absolute moron! I couldn’t stand her before, and now… Go back into hiding with your skinny jean wearing husband you racist assh*le!

  32. santana says:

Let’s see: saggy boobs, weird pointy shapeless stomach (no matter the spanx that we can see through the silk boring dress) , toneless arms and shoulders. And we have to add being a complete idiot to people from the so-called “third world countries” ?

The jour no is right: there are no documented cases of Ebola in Argentina, not the same in the States

  33. TOPgirl says:

I can only agree with what she did…she doesn’t have to shake his hand.

  34. HoustonGrl says:

Hmmm, she shouldn’t have to shake his hand. That’s her business. I can understand his perspective though, Latins are BIG on courtesy and politeness. Probably a huge snub for him. I work at a school so I’m pretty anti-contact, I’ve had to become that way as a result of being sick many many times!

  35. Avalita says:

    The journalists wants some attention.

Someone refuses to shake your hand and you have to throw a tantrum on Twitter? Grow up, little boy.

    • vavavoom says:

If I didn’t want to shake someone’s hand for whatever reason, I wouldn’t. She could have any reason she wants… why does she have to? That’s ridiculous.

And the journalist definitely just wants some attention.

    • whatsmyname? says:

Agree with both of you. He sounds like an attention seeking journo

  36. jasmine says:

My husband has to go to Dallas on a business trip next week and I’ve been super nervous about it! Of course he thinks I’m worrying for no reason, but I think it’s scary! He has to go on a plane and be in Dallas where there was more than one reported case…

  37. Juluho says:

Considering America has the highest number of cases of ebola outside of Africa, the journalist should have been afraid the shake her hand.

  38. Lux says:

Can she please go away and never come back?

Her hand, her choice. Many people no longer practice proper, sufficient hand washing/hygiene. If I were a celeb on tour I would lie and say that I was germaphobic rather than shake thousands of strangers hands.

On the plus side, this is one less article on the Clooney’s endless weddings or Kimye’s endless hideous fashion choices.

Her make up in theses pics make her look like a sad llama.

I just got a horrible flu from someone that I shook their hand and was standing close to, who had come to my house to give me an estimate. After a while, I realized he was sick, but he denied it and said it was allergies. I ended up deathly ill for over seven days with a horrible flu. My friend’s sister got it at the same time and was even sicker longer than me with it and she had gotten her flu shot.

I don’t blame her. He’s the one saying it was because of Eboli and carrying on.. She never said that. He’s from Argentina, so I doubt that was her thought. Maybe she had been sick and was more conscious. Who knows? It was probably more a germaphobic, like I’m becoming during flu season, and no one, even after I said I was well, wanted to be near me, worried I was still contagious. LOL

Anne is losing the mojo. I’m going to make an ageist statement. She’s fast approaching the matronly level and she’s still young and without children.

  43. Godwina says:

I wish fervently we would socially phase out handshaking; it’s archaic, and yes, a custom born of times before we knew about germs (see also: bises). It helps keep viruses circulating in a big way and is completely unnecessary when you do the cost/benefit analysis.

THAT SAID in a professional situation, when I know I have to shake hands for my work, I just do it, and don’t touch my face, etc. until after the session. Then I wash up. No biggie. I hate handshaking so much and it skeeves me completely out, but between shaking someone’s hand and causing someone enormous consternation, I’ll go with the former every time, if there’ s no polite way out of it (which IME there sometimes isn’t–the “I’m just getting over a cold” excuse only gets me so far).

Also, K, yes to your “washing-up on coming home” advice! That’s the first thing I do (plus I wash hands before I eat when I’m in pubic), and I’ve cut down my cold and flu suffering by leagues because of it. A proper soaping and rinsing, too, the 15-30 seconds kind. Make it your friend!

Nice choice for the first picture in this post. Hilarious!

    Simmah down, nah. Simmah down.

  45. Lex says:

P.s. ebola or not, this dress does her zero favours.

Someone wanted attention ie the journo. Hathaway is definitely known for NOT being racist/xenophobic/homophobic etc.

  47. Marianne says:

    Unfair.

I kind of blame the media for the way the stories have been represented, I think its causing more panic than anything. There’s nothing to suggest that journalist ever went to Africa or knows anyone from there and even if she did, you’re not going to get ebola from shaking someone’s hand. Plus, if you’re that worried you could always wash your hands or use sanitizer after.

I mean, I get people have germ phobias in general as well, but then just say its that. No need to single out ebola, kind of ridiculous.

Secondly, that sack dress is hideous. Anne’s hair looks really nice though.
