Chris Evans blames ‘irresponsible journalism’ for his retirement story

Chris Evans

This post was supposed to be a simple one about our favorite Dorito. Starting with Chris Evans’ visit to China last Friday. He played in a celebrity golf tournament. There are revealing GIFs of Chris taking a swing and staring off across the green. The ball was sitting right in front of him. So much second-hand embarrassment, but it was charming. Not everyone can be Bill Murray when it comes to golf.

Things got complicated with yesterday’s Marvel Event (I’ll discuss in a moment), but I intended to segue into a Buzzfeed interview from the Avengers: Age of Ultron set. The journo spoke with Evans and Chris Hemsworth about their friendship and tenure with Marvel. A few words from Evans:

Evans on Hemsworth: “We’re buddies. We’ve been on a little bit of a ride doing these movies. You make really good friendships. It sounds cliche to say: ‘We all get along so well!’ We really get along phenomenally well. It’s like summer camp. It’s the kind of comfort that can only come with years of experience of what it’s like embodying a Marvel superhero. In the beginning, you’re just so grateful. You’re very timid. You’re lucky you got invited to the barbecue, you just don’t want to get in the way. Now, you feel a little more at home, and it feels a little more like a collaboration that you contribute to. If anything’s changed, it’s just my feeling of ‘welcomeness.’ Is that a word, welcomeness? We’re going to make it a word, f— it.”

His “retirement” announcement: “Which I never said, and if you read the interview, you’ll see that,” says Evans. It is obviously something of an exasperating topic for him. “It’s not where I’m playing a sport where I’m just too old to do it. You can act until you’re dead. It was really one of those frustrating things that you give in an interview, and you can quote me, irresponsible journalism — everywhere I went, every interview was like, ‘So you’re quitting?!’ Didn’t say ‘quitting! I said that I wanted to take a break!”

The “infamous” Marvel contract: “Halfway through!”” he says, throwing up his arms in his trailer with an enormous grin. “I mean, I’m going to miss these when they’re done. I really will. This has been a lot of fun, and they’re only getting more fun. Especially because there’s a trust in Marvel that you’re going to make something good. It would really be lousy to be stuck in a contract knowing that you’re making sh-t. And I just don’t feel that way. It’s really a blessing that this kind of fell in my lap. Sometimes you don’t really feel deserving of it. But I’ll take it.”

[From Buzzfeed]

It’s an interesting interview, and I only scratched the surface. Hemsworth expressed concern as to whether Marvel could revisit the Thor-Loki dynamic and still keep it fresh. As Kaiser mentions, there will be Hiddles in Marvel’s Phase III.

To tie up the “retirement” topic: Chris takes issue with the entire media for “irresponsible journalism” because Variety used the word “retire in its Evans cover profile. To be fair, Evans didn’t say that word. He mentioned “a break” (like Ross and Rachel) and said, “I can’t see myself pursuing acting strictly outside of what I’m contractually obligated to do.” This wishy-washy talk followed weeks of Evans tap dancing over how his heart wasn’t in the Cap role before he clarfied and overcompensated. All I’m saying is this: The stage was set. Own your flakiness, dude.

Anyway. The Marvel Event happened & a few other things. Bulletpoints, please:

* Marvel announced seven films and release dates, including confirmation of Captain America 3: Civil War (co-starring Robert Downey Jr.). At some point, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will converge with either an Avengers or Winter Soldier movie. Yay, more Sebastian Stan and Chris Pratt!

* Kaiser already discussed how Black Panther (played by Chadwick Boseman) gets his own movie in 2017. He will appear in the third Cap movie, Civil War, as an intro. And Marvel will release a female superhero movie in 2018. The lucky role is Captain Marvel (not to be confused with DC’s Captain Marvel, who has been renamed as “Shazam”). Who should play Captain Marvel? My pick is Natalie Dormer. The bad news? Black Widow got the shaft again.

* Mark Ruffalo did an Ultron set interview. He revealed how Scarlet Witch’s scream can turn the Avengers against each other. That explains Tony Stark’s silly Hulkbuster costume. Ruffalo also revealed that there’s a little romance for the Hulk in this movie. Yeeeah. Get ready for that, Black Widow.

* Finally! Last night’s Agents of Shield episode revealed a blues-soaked minute of extra Age of Ultron footage, which features a hammer-lifting party. This leads to Ultron’s entrance and and part of the trailer that we discussed last week. We still don’t know what’s going on with Andy Serkis.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes photo of RDJ with Evans & Boseman at the Marvel Event.

  1. Cirien says:

Wait, if he’s “Half-way through” his contract does that mean that a) the cameo in Thor didn’t count- and b) he’s going to be in the last two Avenger’s films? (I mean I know that last film is going to be spilt into two anyway). That’s news.

Because surely if it did count, he’d be like “Two to go!” surely?

    • Algernon says:

I wish I could find the exact quote because I remember Chris talked about this, but he said the Thor cameo doesn’t count. That was a separate payday (get that money, Dorito!). So he has Captain America 3 and one more Avengers movie left, unless he re-negotiates for more appearances, like RDJ did. But Chris has never seemed to want to extend his contract, so I doubt he does that.

      • cirien says:

I know Chris doesn’t want to up his contract. and since the last film is being spilt it makes sence he’d want to fulfil that so it’s good to know!!!

    • Samtha says:

It didn’t count. Here’s the interview where he confirms that (it’s near the end, at about the 3 minute mark in the video):

  2. Celebitchy says:

Ok, no disrespect to Chadwick Boseman, who is awesome, but why isn’t Anthony Mackie getting his own superhero movie? Falcon should have a movie. Is it because Falcon will always be overshadowed by Captain America? -edit- and in no way am I saying that we can’t have two black superhero movies, that would be excellent.

    • Hawkeye says:

And maybe we can see at least one Asian actor as a superhero with his/her own movie too?

      • Algernon says:

I think they should make Iron Fist, who will have a Netflix show, Asian. If you read his character biography, in this day and age, he makes *more* sense as a Chinese-American than as a white guy.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Ming-Na Wen’s Agent May should have her own film because she’s fierce.

      • Amy Tennant says:

Agent May is amazing. Also, Carol Danvers FTW! Throws up my hands) who’s with me? Honk if you love Carol!

    • Bedhead says:

Anthony Mackie should be in Cap 3, but yes, Falcon needs his own movie! He presumably takes over for Cap wayyyy down the line, but that’s too long a wait.

    • Milena says:

That’s what I thought when I heard the news! “Anthony Mackie’s gonna be bummed…” So when they introduce Black Panther in Cap 3, they’d better keep Falcon around. As for the reasoning behind it, I’m not familiar with the original arc of the character, but do think that Falcon was always a secondary superhero in the Cap comics? Just a guess? Maybe Marvel just wanted a “clean slate” to work with; they did pick another new-to-the-screen superhero for Captain Marvel.

    • jammypants says:

The only way Mackie will get his own movie is if he becomes Captain America (like the newest comics).

    • uninspired username says:

      @Algernon

      I agree.

  3. Celia says:

To be fair to Chris, it’s possible he clarified his stance in the interview but the reporter simply decided not to include those comments in the actual article.

My father gets occasionally interviewed as a ‘expert’ thanks to his job and he often gets frustrated how journalists write something different from what he actually says because they want to fit the comments in the narrative or agenda they want to portray.

  4. Milena says:

He’s always going to be a bit of a neurotic mess, but I love him. Can’t blame the dude for getting tired of the Marvel press circuit – it seems exhausting, and he’s up there on the world’s biggest stage. And with that body he can be a whiny mess, I don’t care! Just look at that butt! And those eyelashes! Whine away, baby… I’m over here objectifying you like it’s my damn job.

Cap ass aside, I’m most excited about the Captain Marvel and Black Panther movies! Natalie Dormer would be a great choice. I’d definitely like to see someone like her, a trained actress, stepping into the part as opposed to a starlet type. Marvel casting is usually great, so I can’t wait to see who’s going to be shortlisted for the part.

  5. Nikki says:

I can watch the Avengers hang out just as a movie itself. Love it!

  6. Jaderu says:

I officially have superhero fatigue. Unless of course Cumby gets Strange.

I see bedhead is playing MadLibs again:
Not everyone can be Bill Murray when it comes to _______. (noun, verb, or dangling participle-I just like to say dangling)

  7. QQ says:

And I blame His Neuroses for the “retiring” report

…and that Good ass marvel money for te bcktracking

I love Chadwick and plan on being supportive of him making money but Im Fatigued of this Marvel sh!t… For reals Casting speculations announcements, super secrety secrets End of movie plot reveals …ALL OF IT My bf tried to talk about the Fappuccino Grande Level Orgasm that the Nerdery was having and I just had to stop him, flat out PLEASE STOP DONT TELL ME ANYTHING…If there is a trailer that looks interesting six months ahead of whatever movie let me know and I’ll decide if im in or not, this is absurd! but yeah Marvel is just now sonning DC for the sheer f*ck of it and to show em how they can print money by now

  8. Talie says:

He seems like he’s a real whackadoodle in private.

    • Elle says:

Oh yes, but isn’t that part of the fun?

This is me projecting, but he seems like a theatre geek who somehow ended up in the quarterback’s body. And he’s stuck between those two personas, hence the neurosis. And I say this as someone who wishes Hollywood would cast him in more diverse roles, because I think he’d rise to the occasion.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Well, the CBS sports idiots did refer to him as “retired Patriots player” when they showed him in Bob Kraft’s box a few weeks ago so they seemed to think he was a football player. He does contribute to local school theater groups.

    • Nessa says:

He does seem all kind of crazy. That’s why I love him. He seems a little more genuine than most other celebrities. At least in his interviews… I know I say this as he is back together with one of the fakest, famewh0res out there. Minka is awful. And this is his third try with her. Soooo, there is that.

      I still would, though.

  9. TTMuch says:

I know it’s not relevant or germane to the topic exactly, but why no Wonder Woman? I understand it’s a whole other comic book, but if people are THIS excited about all kinds of new, lesser known comic book superheros, why no WW?

Also, I can still never remember which Chris is which.

  10. Jen says:

    TOO. MANY. SUPERHERO. MOVIES.

It’s not that there’s too many overall in the grand scheme of things, is that’s all these damn superhero movies are the only ones dominating conversations, because all the movie sites are run by nerds who drool all over themselves and fight each other to have the most coverage possible and they have giant marketing machines behind them. It feels like superhero movies is all that people make anymore. ugh. ENOUGH.

    • QQ says:

jen I too just let.have Upthread about the same thing..im exhausted if it for the same reasons you are…is not even that they arent enjoyable is just ..this hype is tiring

    • KellyBee says:

      +100000000

      @ QQ

I don’t even find them enjoyable for me it just mess of bad over the top acting with some great special effects.

      • Jen says:

Ditto. Avengers is the most boring movie I’ve ever seen. I didn’t even finish it. It was just a bunch of stupid grown men with “superpowers” yelling at each other.

    • Elle says:

I’m fine with all of the superhero movies … but studios need to diversify their line ups. I refuse to believe that there’s not a single screenwriter in Hollywood who couldn’t write a decent romantic comedy or a non-frat boy comedy.

  11. Algernon says:

“We still don’t know what’s going on with Andy Serkis.”

Sure we do. He’s playing a character related to Black Panther’s home country. Google Ulysses Klaw if you don’t care about potential spoilers.

  12. INeedANap says:

Given that he was/is prone to anxiety attacks, I feel like he was probably in the middle of a bad phase when all those “I need a break” quotes came out. Since he had to promote his movie at TIFF, he’s seemed a lot more relaxed and…mature? Mature. Either someone knocked some sense into him, or he’s seeing a great therapist.

Holy cookies, he’s a good looking man.

  13. InvaderTak says:

So I read the interview with Fluffalo, and he’s not helping calm my doubts about Avengers 2. Maybe I’m over thinking his comments, or he really can’t say anymore than he did. IDK. Still aven’t heard any good reason to like the 2 new ones either, other than they’re new. I’m irrationally worried about this film!

And Evans’ golf swing looks like the Hulk trying to swat a spider on the ground.

    • T.Fanty says:

At least the Hulk would have hit the spider.

      • InvaderTak says:

Yes lol Thor could play croquet with Mjolnir more gracefully than that. Save Chrevans from himself, give him a beer and put him on the putt-putt course!

    • Lilacflowers says:

Ruffalo already got into trouble for tweeting pictures from the set so he has probably been told to keep quiet

  14. Miss M says:

And I blame Chris Evans for lacking common sense and some brain cells based on who he chooses to date, lol

    • Elle says:

Isn’t there some saying about, if you really want to know who a person is, see who they date and marry?

  15. maum says:

He was f—ing gorgeous in Sunshine.

    That is all.

    • INeedANap says:

      PREACH.

That movie was great, and he looks way better with some dirt and scruff than the Steve Rogers hair.

  16. MeloMelo says:

Am I the only one who doesn’t care about a Black Widow movie?
To be fair, I’ve only seen The Avengers and her character bored me. Was she better developed in the other movies?

    • uninspired username says:

There are other female characters I’d rather see, but I’d watch a Black Widow solo movie.

      • Annaliese says:

I want to see Black Widow and Agent May do a buddy movie. Kickass clear to Asgard and back.

    • TTMuch says:

You are not the only one who could are less about a Black Widow movie; I didn’t think that character was interesting at all. Even of I wasn’t fixated on Wonder Woman

  17. uninspired username says:

“My pick is Natalie Dormer. ”

She’s been in the movies already, in the first Captain America.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Yeah, and if they want to use her again she’d be better for a villain. Margot Robbie would be a good Carol Danvers IMO.

  18. Jag says:

Still don’t like him and he did it to himself. My guess is that one of the other guys talked some sense into Evans and that’s why there’s been such a turnaround in his behavior.
