Andie MacDowell to older actresses: stop obsessing on negativity

Some people will disagree, but I’ve always found Andie MacDowell to be drop-dead gorgeous. She has a natural, earthy-yet-sophisticated beauty, like a throwback to Ingrid Bergman. However, I don’t think much of Andie’s acting ability. She’s not… talented. She was okay in Sex, Lies and Videotape and Four Weddings and a Funeral, but other than those films she’s never really impressed me. I don’t even remember her being in a major movie in the past five years. The only time I see her are in those well-lit L’Oreal ads.

But Andie MacDowell is chiming in about ageism and Hollywood, and no, it’s not yet another actress complaining about the lack of meaty roles. Andie says that “mature” actresses have it fine in Hollywood, and that the idea of a sexy older woman is becoming more prevalent everyday. Andie says that women who complain about the lack of roles are just obsessed with negativity. Thaindian News has more:

Blasting widely held beliefs that Hollywood doesn’t pay any heed to older women, Andie MacDowell has insisted that there’s no dearth of roles for women who have lost the glory of their youth.

The 50-year-old face of L’Oreal claims that mature actresses have it easier than they make out of it.

“How do I think the industry’s changed? Films have changed a lot. I think women are finally able to get older and be sexy just like men. So I’m really enjoying that part – that’s my evolution,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying at a UNICEF event in LA.

She added: “I think sometimes we seem to obsess on negativity. I think role models exist but they usually don’t get the light because people like scandal.”

However, the actress’s comments could enrage other senior actresses like Faye Dunaway.

Last year, Dunaway attacked Hollywood film producers for giving the likes of Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood on-screen lovers half their age, while she could only play “sisters and mothers”.

[From Thaindian News]

Meh, a little from Column A, a little from Column B. A film critic recently pointed out that in the “Golden Age” of Hollywood, many over-forty actresses were still playing meaty lead roles in romances, dramas and comedies. Which isn’t really the case any more. When an over-forty actress takes a big role now, the publicity machine ramps up and she gets tons of questions about her age, and all of the stuff that comes with it. I’ve said it before, some of the best parts for “older” actresses these days is on television. So Andie is right about one thing – the media will continue to obsess about the negative, even if more mature actresses are getting work in film… and television.

i used to live and work in montana, near where Andie lived with her then husband. I waited on her several times at the restaurant I worked at,including when she was very pregnant with her 3rd. I have to say,she IS drop dead gorgeous in person, naturally beautiful. Very pleasant/polite,and her kids were a hoot. They were very functional/normal. And it was funny how many other patrons would say ‘that looks like andie macdowell’ b/c in those parts, you LOOK like, rather than being the real thing.

Love that she has lines around her eyes, and her face doesn’t look plumped and frozen. Who knew L’Oreal products are so anti-aging?

  3. Ash says:

I hope my body looks like that when I’m 50…wow.

  4. Ned says:

Most of the biggest films and luctrauve productions are taking older actresses – over 40 years old.

Some of these actresses lie about their age, but the industry people know they are over 40 or around 40 years old.

I really liked at in Sex, Lies and Videotape and Four Weddings and a Funeral.
I think she is a beautiful woman, and has a charm and class that is in dire need.

I also remember her from Green Card and she did a good job.

  5. Susan says:

Hello? Groundhog Day (one of my favorite movies!).

She is gorgeous. She has a very unique look. Not the typical blonde haired/blue eyed Hollywood type.

  6. Frenchie says:

Same for me, groundhog day is one of my favorite movies.
I also love that her teeth are not done : a little crocked and natural colour… it’s actually real teeth and not tiny pieces of dishware like they all have.
She has one GREAT body. Perfect balance. I would just like to see her with less smoky eyes.

  7. Jenni says:

    I think she is stunning.

  8. Lem says:

oh I’m peeved. How can you have a girl model your potions and airbrush out most of the lines around her eyes. Well hell, are you going to follow me around in real life and airbrush out my fine lines and wrinkles.
I’m not saying she looks bad but HELLO that is not the face of the girl in the ads.
I’m just so over the airbrushing, my god. All of middle america can’t keep up. So the women in La La Land will look great ‘for their age’ and the women in ‘real life’ will look haggard. Great!

Thanks Kaiser for saving me some money on a lotion. BTW that Cindy Crawford line is crap too. Informercial suckered me. Doesn’t work very well at all IMO.

  9. blunderbuss says:

    She’s exquisite.

  10. becca says:

Er…Meryl Streep is getting some very meaty roles. “Doubt” anyone? Helen Mirren is another one. “Elizabeth I” anyone?

  11. Aspen says:

    She is still SO pretty.

  12. Aspen says:

If you look “haggard,” which I doubt, it’s more likely from lack of sleep and a tendency to spend too much time worked up and angry over things that don’t matter…like the claims of eye cream and skin products marketing. I get frustrated with my slowly-appearing lines and wrinkles, as well. I think we all do.

But your eye cream isn’t the cause…and it’s not like Andie McDowell is in her 30’s. Her eye wrinkling is SO minimal for her age. I’m sure that’s a combination of good genes, good fitness, good sun protection…AND good products.

  13. Mimi says:

she’s beautiful. always has been. God bless her.

  14. Aspen says:

My intended tone does not come across in that post. I was not scolding you, Lem. I was TRYING to write with humor and commiserating smiles, but it doesn’t read that way…so just know that my intent was to be on “your team” with the airbrushing comment…not to scold you for it.

  15. nag says:

I have always liked the woman. I hope she doesn’t go down the plastic botox track and the makeup company doesn’t make her do it to flog their products.
I think she could be a bit of a trail blazer by not using plastic surgery etc and just accept her lifelines and get on with life.

  16. RAN says:

Love her! And Aspen said it best – the woman is 50 years old! I’ve seen women in their 30’s look more wrinkled than she does. Obviously something is working for her.

And I’m on board with Groundhog Day – one of the best movies ever!

  17. geronimo says:

I love her too, and have liked her in everything she’s been in, from Sex, Lies & Videotape onwards – even Green Card (although Depardieu had a lot to do with that as well!) Her look is very individual and distinct and she looks gorgeous here.

  18. Lem says:

@ Aspen, well fud that means this wrinkle right here has Octomom’s name on it and this one over here must be for tiny tom and look there’s even a beyonce has no talent what-so-ever- minus brilliant marketing frown line. Better step away from the gossip.
I’m not yet haggard, still getting carded and suprise folks all the time w/ my age. But hollywood is setting totally unrealistic standards!

  19. Lem says:

Green Card and Groundhog Day as good movies? Y’all have lost your minds!

  20. Lem says:

Please dish. What’s your fav. lotion and what your fav. spa treatment?

  21. PJ says:

Interesting … but when was the last good role Andy got? Seems like there’s a market for her talents, since everybody on the blog likes her, but I don’t remember her being in any movies lately.

  22. PJ says:

It isn’t just the media that obsesses over age. On some of the celeb sites, the posters are not kind to anyone they consider “old.” They obsess over any signs of aging in an actress. Maybe they’re taking their lead from the media.

  23. geronimo says:

@Lem – what, we’ve lost our minds because we don’t share your opinion?! Not everything has to be meaningful or deep to be entertaining. Long as it hits the spot.

  24. Lem says:

easy geronimo, if you like Depardieu, we’ve obviously got different opinions. Actually meaningful is usually pretty dull but c’mon if you can like Green Card, than I can think your loopy. All in good fun of course. One of my old favorites is ‘Girls Just Wanta Have Fun’. You can think I’m fairly daft for that and I’d just have to agree. 😉

  25. geronimo says:

@Lem – easy right backatcha! I do love Depardieu so yeah, Green Card got a pass from me (even tho’ it was, at heart, a sentimental pile of twaddle!) Different strokes, eh. 🙂

  26. Lem says:

twaddle? lol Thanks now I have the image of him in those speedo beach shots dancing around in the grey matter.

  27. daisy424 says:

She looks fabulous! Thanks for the interesting tidbit Irm!

  28. quiet_on_the_set says:

Funny you should bring up Angie of all the Actresses out there, I was working on A shoot in Malibu that she was on, sitting within 2ft. of her. She is radiant as well as a fine actress.

  29. 68-77 says:

She is absolutely gorgeous. I really hope she stays natural, and not take the currently-followed route of botox or plastic surgury. She looks beautiful just as she is…personally, I don’t think there’s any younger (20-30 age) actresses that have anything on her.

  30. Jenn says:

It’s a shame she’s so ….how can I put this delicately? I’ve met her twice and we’ll just say she is less than friendly or classy.
