Natalie Dormer’s ‘bitchy resting face’ has had it with Photoshop ‘angst’

Natalie Dormer

Natalie Dormer covers the December issue of Flare magazine. The shoot doesn’t do her justice at all. Nat has a very bold look, and the mag mostly airbrushed her into genericism. Natalie is promoting her role in Mockingjay: Part I as Cressida, the documentary filmmaker who just happens to be a badass. The Flare interview talks about Nat’s half-shaved hairdo for the movie. She discusses her lopsided mouth again, but she calls it a “bitchy resting face” instead.

Oh, how I identify with Nat’s predicament. Most of my life has been spent dodging “What’s wrong?” questions, and the answer is always, “Oh, I just look like this.” Long live the bitchy resting face. We shall one day assemble and destroy the world. Beware. Here are some excerpts about many things. I especially like the part where Nat talks about body image and Photoshop:

On her hair: “I’m a natural blonde! It was funny because for the shoot yesterday, the hairstylist drew in roots. I was like, ‘You’re undermining me here, I’ve been telling people for years I’m really a blonde!'”

Her Cressida haircut: “I had a bit of a–[gulp]–moment,” she says, but she reconciled herself to going bald. Francis Lawrence later suggested an undercut befitting of a rebel punk from Panem’s fashion-forward Capitol.

Her upcoming BBC adaptation, Lady Worsley’s Whim: “I swore I wasn’t going to get back in a corset! But when it’s history, I’m a sucker. When it’s a real person who led a real life, I just get hooked, and I’m like, I have to know more about this human being. But you can see the pain I’m gonna be in! It feels like a bit of a homecoming because when I was a teenager. I’ve never done a costume drama for the BBC. This role is teenage Natalie’s dream.”

On (someday) getting married to her fiancé: “It’s such a thing, right? So many little girls dream about their wedding day. But with actresses, sometimes it’s the inverse, because we get to be the centre of attention, looked up and down, dressed up for premieres all the time. The pull isn’t quite as great.”

On female roles in film: “We don’t have enough young, female antiheroes. We don’t accept women as antiheroes the way we do the men. Unless there’s a family get-out clause.” She cites Katey Sagal’s character in Sons of Anarchy and Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black. “We accept women being complete c–ts if they’re doing it for a child.”

Nat’s trio of femme fatale character: “Is it the bitchy resting face?”

Nat’s strong female characters: “The beautiful thing about Margaery is that even though she keeps getting married, she’s not defined by a love interest. And Cressida is defined by her profession and her political beliefs. Since Anne Boleyn, I haven’t played a woman who’s defined by romantic love.”

Her 3:50:56 London marathon time: “When you’re in the public eye, it’s hard to negotiate your relationship with your body. But the way I look at it is: if I can run 26 miles in under four hours, then there’s nothing wrong with my body. Sometimes younger girls see things and maybe they’ve been Photoshopped or whatever, and they take it to heart. There’s all this angst, and it’s just not necessary.”

On her tumultous 20s: “I’ve got through the angst of my 20s. I know who I am, and that’s half the battle in life. I hear the calls a director makes, and I see audition tapes, and when you start out, it’s this narcissistic thing of”–she affects a pompous voice–“‘It’s all about me and my art.’ But then you step outside of it and it is show business: it is a business.”

Perspective on her career: “I’m just an actor! I was a daydreamer as a kid. I want to act because of whatever artistic bone is in my body. I want to explore what it is to be alive. I just want to make good sh-t.”

[From Flare]

I unabashedly dig this woman. Part of the draw is that she’s a runner, and that means she’s a bit plucky and insufferable by nature (we are). The important thing? Natalie recognizes how her body is perfect the way it is because it allows her to do what she wants to do with it. Her legs are just as “real” as anyone else’s legs, big or small, because they carry her 26.2 miles. Even the running magazines airbrush their models, so there’s no hope for losing the Photoshop monster in fashion mags.

Natalie’s ambivalent attitude towars marriage isn’t new, but it’s interesting. She’s been engaged to Anthony Byrne for three years. They’re “too busy” to get married, but that’s cool. Natalie’s 32 years old, and there’s no rush.

I find that I really like her a lot. Smart woman, good actress – I’m glad we’re seeing more of her now.

  3. Seapharris7 says:

Let me just say I like her a lot, but I always give side eye to long engagements. 3+ years withno definite date set seems long to me.

  4. Kiddo says:

I like the blue suit on the cover.

  5. BendyWindy says:

Why did I think she was an early 20-something? Girlfriend looks good.

  6. Maude says:

I really like her a lot. I was a huge fan of The Tudors, and she played my favorite interpretation of Anne Boelyn ever. I was pleasantly surprised when she joined the Game of Thrones cast and can’t wait to see her in Mockingjay. I hope she continues to have success. She has such a unique look. There is something so intriguing about her face. And she really is a wonderful actress.

  7. original kay says:

She is a wonderful actress. She gave Andrew Scott a run for his money as Moriarty.
Hard to say who was better, so I’ll just say both. lol!

  8. susie says:

I loved her in Tudors. and of course as Margery.

  9. Caitlin Bruce says:

Did I read that correctly? She’s 32? I thought she was more like 22. Jaw wide open. :O

  10. Luciana says:

Natalie Dormer’s so beautiful. I’m so happy she’s getting roles (big ones!) and magazine covers. Her assessment regarding “perfect body” is on point. You don’t have to look like Gisele Bundchen to have “the perfect body”. Hollywood and media standards are bull sh*t.

    • FLORC says:

She’s really lovely to look at. Her “smirk” helps her stand out from the pack of blonde actresses. Much like Renee once did.

  11. Ginger says:

I adored her role in the Tudors. She is so pretty and seems together. Can’t wait to see her in the Hunger Games. Sorry, I don’t watch Game of Thrones so I can’t comment on that.

No need to duck and hide about not watching GoT…she is sadly underused on that show anyway. I adore Natalie, not only is she beautiful but she’s smart, pragmatic, and relatable.
Glad she is picking up some big roles. Hopefully GoT will make better use of her this upcoming season than they have on previous ones.

  12. ds says:

She’s got such a great vibe; like you’d want a friend like her. More of Natalie please. Plus, I also have a bitchy resting face and hated getting the usual “what’s wrong” questions.

  13. lucy2 says:

I like her, and I’m glad her career has taken off. She sounds like a very smart woman too.

  14. Shahrizai says:

I love her! I’ve followed her since the Tudors and I have always enjoyed her work on Elementary, too. She’s a badass Moriarty.

  15. Cali says:

She’s over 30? Kudos to her – she looks to be in her very early 20s. I really like her look and her acting. I’m excited to see her in Mockingjay in a few weeks! AND whenever the heck Game of Thrones returns… haha

  16. Hello Kitty says:

26 miles under four hours?!?! I love her even more now!

  17. sigh((s)) says:

She’s fantastic. What a great down to earth attitude.

  18. QQ says:

    GAAHH I Love her

    Her Resting Bitchface

    Her Work!

  19. Gillian1 says:

Natalie is fabulous – great to see that between GoT and Mockingjay she is finally coming into her own.

  20. INeedANap says:

    HONK for Natalie Dormer!

She seems to have a really wise and realistic head on her shoulders. Her comments about how here’s nothing wrong with her body needs to be graffiti’d on every fashion-mag high-rise in New York. Preach!

  21. Dara says:

HONK HONK for Natalie! I aspire to be as cool as she is when I grow up. Full disclosure – I am, in calendar years, older – but am nowhere near as mature and self-possessed.

  22. Lucy says:

    HONK HONK! She’s absolutely fabulous.

  23. FLORC says:

    HONK!

And runners are Plucky? Insufferable yes. But only when talking about running or running related stuff with non-runners.

Sub 4 hours is a respectable time. She’s right to use that as a gauge of her health. Good for her!
She’s so damn likable! And she’s not preachy. Actors and models should take note.

  24. JustChristy says:

    Honk! Beep! Boooooonk!

She reminds me of Zoella (YouTube Zoella, I’m unaware of any other by that name.) Except Natalie has the natural smirk. My face is somewhere between testing bitch and resting someone just kicked my puppy. Number me asking those who were always asked what’s wrong and told to smile by people who liked to assume things.

  25. allons-y alonso says:

    Lover her!

  26. Mocha says:

    SHE’S HOW OLD?
Seriously, I thought she like 23 or 26 at the most, not 32?

  27. Carrie says:

    Hold the phone….32?!
