Benedict Cumberbatch & Sophie Hunter have only been together for 5 months?!

ben1

The Daily Mail and The Daily Beast ran hurried pieces on Benedict Cumberbatch’s fiancée Sophie Hunter yesterday. I’ll admit it, I didn’t know much about her other than she’s a sometimes actress/performer but she’s more into theatre directing. I also knew that she’s in her 30s and she has that aristocratic look that Benedict seems to like. I actually made a conscious effort, months ago, not to learn more about her because… you know, I’m not a stalker. But now that legit media outlets are trying to figure out the mystery of Sophie Hunter, I thought I would partake. Here’s what I learned from the post-engagement analysis.

*Benedict and Sophie’s engagement announcement cost £29 per line of text.

*Sophie is identified as Benedict’s girlfriend of “two years standing.” NOPE. That’s not true. Won’t anyone think of poor Katia?!

*Another friend tells The Mail that Sophie and Benedict have been dating for only five months and “I’ve never known him happier, and she is a wonderful woman — very intelligent. They have known each other a long time, but the romance is recent. It really only took off over the summer, maybe even late summer. It has moved fast, but when something works, it works. They are very good for each other and are very much in love. They have mutual friends and mutual interests in the theatre. It just works. They have clicked. It is lovely news.”

*Sophie once said: “I can definitely relate to that as a trap [of being experimental]…. I’m hoping that if we fail, we fail gloriously. It would be terrible if it was a polite piece of theatre.”

*Sophie is the oldest of three children. Her family is a blend of military, aristocrat and artist. Her grandfather was General Sir James Michael Gow (and aide de camp general to the Queen) and the family is in Debrett’s Peerage.

*Sophie’s family is based in Scotland but Sophie grew up in Hammersmith, West London. Per The Mail: “Her father Charles was an Insurance Executive who went on to become a professional card player and her mother Sophie worked as an administrator, but the couple sadly divorced.”

*She actually is an accomplished theatre director and playwright. She is 36 years old, two years younger than Benedict.

*Sophie studied French and Modern Languages at Oxford and she attended L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris for two years. She also attended the Saratoga International Theatre Institute in New York City.

*Sophie and Benedict first met in 2009, on the set of Burlesque Fairytales.

*While Benedict did go to Scotland to meet Sophie’s mom, The Mail says it wasn’t to ask for the mom’s blessing, maybe? A friend claims: “They just got engaged this week. He didn’t go up to Edinburgh to ask her mum first. He asked her, I think, on Monday, then they rang to put the advert in on Tuesday.” Fast work, Cumber.

*She was already one half of an “It Couple” in London when she dated artist Conrad Shawcross for years in the mid 2000s. They met at Oxford and lived together for a time.

*She’s eschewed fame and publicity many times – she’s never been a club girl and she doesn’t go to the opening of an envelope.

[From The Daily Beast & The Daily Mail & The Daily Mail]

All in all, I think she sounds like a nice person. The worst thing I could possibly say about her is that she seems a bit pretentious and fart-sniffy, you know? But that’s far from the worst quality to have. I like that Benedict is with someone his age, someone with the same kind of life experiences and someone whom he’s known for a while. Would I love it if this crashed and burned? Of course. But I doubt it will crash and burn. I think they’re probably pretty happy.

Oh, and The Daily Mail’s sources say that even thought Bendy is booked up solid through 2016, he and Sophie will probably find a quiet moment to marry in the next year. Either that or it will be a very long engagement. Who knows?

Had to use the pic with the thumb hat, eh Kaiser?

  2. Frantically Bored says:

    “Fart-sniffy”. A+

  3. Felice says:

My therapist once said that men tend to be more needy in general for companionship. Also I liked what someone said in the other who said he’s having a Hamlet midlife crisis. A lot can happen in a year I’m very interested in how this will play out.

  4. mazzie says:

Eh, time doesn’t mean much. If it works for them, all the better.

    • L says:

Exactly. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become much less concerned about how long people have been together before getting married. I’ve seen folks that knew each other for 3 months get married and be married for nearly a decade, and then people that were together for years barely squeak out one year of marriage before getting divorced.

If you know who you are and have experienced some life (and aren’t just getting married to get away from mom/dad)-it can work out whether it’s been 5 months or 5 years.

      • Andrea says:

Unfortunately with the exception of one, I have seen everyone else who married quickly get divorced quickly as well that I have known. Most people don’t know themselves or one another (or communicate very well)before getting married and this isn’t just the early 20 year olds, I’ve seen it in people well into their 30’s and 40’s as well. This is why the divorce rate is so high and everyone know a lot of people on second and third spouse by the time they are 40 or 50 these days.

      • allheavens says:

        @L

I agree with what you said.

My husband and I moved in together a month after we met, got married 3 months later and have been together for 31 years. Sometimes you just know it’s right.

Benedict and Sophie are not kids, they’ve been around the block a few times, they’ve know each other for a few years and maybe it was just the right timing.

      • funfactor says:

My mom and dad married after knowing each other for only 3 months. He was 19 years her senior (she was 18). They were just about to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary when Dad died. You just never know!

      • Grant says:

I’m with Andrea. Everyone I know who got married quickly ended up getting divorced just as quickly.

  5. Lindy79 says:

She is an art for arts sake kind of person. Not my cup of tea but not something to be either hated or treated like she’s a magical unicorn because she’s marrying him.

Its hilarious that the only pics of them together are some screencaps from that Fairytale thing or the bored shitless French Open ones.
I’m picturing wedding pics where they look in opposite directions and are never shot together.

    • MissMary says:

LOL I Noticed that, and that some sites had taken to ‘shopping them together to have an engagement pic.

  6. Karen says:

When i think of aristo marriages i see them going on to their 3rd and 4th marriages. So i doubt that’s the thing that makes it a good match. But they’re happy.

They’ll have to work (just like everyone) to make it work. But lots of money and fame doesn’t make it easier. But all the best of luck to them.

  7. Lilacflowers says:

Is everyone okay this morning? Have you all recovered?

    • Lindy79 says:

Mr Lindy has the chamomile tea *cough*wine*cough* on tap at our house 😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

Oh good. I’m glad someone is there to tend to your needs. Chamomile will feel nice on that cough. Later today, I’ll send Mark Strong over in the Jag to bring you some gelato.

      • Lindy79 says:

Oh wonderful, just what my throat needs!

(That reads a lot more Carry On Cumby wink-wink than I intended but it stays!)

      • icerose says:

@Lilacflower a girl after my own heart,
After sleeping fot 10 hours I had to rush out for ice-cream at he local shop and it is just not t he same as gelato Mind you a lot of it was my fear for our little Tommy as “We Still have Tom” posts spread across the internet to day.So just to let you know I nipped over in my private jet and took him into protective custody. I will drop him back to you when we have emptied my ice cream stock. I had Cillian stop in at Paul A Young’s , Gelateria 3bis and Scoop at Covent Gardens so we have a bit too get through. So expect later this evening if all goes according to plan.
I have to say he has taken the news very well but I do think it was careless of Benny to leave him in such a vulnerable position. The poor man was locked in the toilet with his guitar playing singing those old Hank Williams favourites
“I Can’t Escape From You” and “My Son Calls Another Man Daddy” but we won’t go into that now

      • sigh((s)) says:

Don’t even say the T-word! You will jinx it! My fingers are planted firmly in my ears. *lalalalalalal*
I don’t give a toss about Benny. He’s just gossip fodder. I need wine to go with my gelato, please!

      • Josa says:

@icerose. The amount of “we still have Tom” I read is disturbing. While hiding in the toilet, Tom should use his iphone to read all those comments on the last thread to accustom himself to them. Those are coming for him some day.

      • icerose says:

@sigh I have created a marriage free zone spell a which should keep him single for at least 2 years and Marvel should take care of the rest.

      • Tara says:

‘Those are coming for him some day’

Lol, Josa! I can totally picture Tom locked in a toilet stall nervously reading all this stuff about Ben knowing that it will be him some day. That would be kind of scary.

      • sigh((s)) says:

Icerose, I love you and your witchy ways.

    • PunkyMomma says:

@Lilacflowers – totally hungover from the engagement party. I’m out of sherry, too.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Oh dear, we seem to be out of sherry at the moment. Rather puzzling as I left a dozen bottles of it on the other thread last night. I’ll have to send Mark or Colin out for some more. In the meantime, would you care for a mimosa or a bloody mary? And Colin has just finished icing some lovely cinnamon buns and we have berries. Please help yourself.

      • PunkyMomma says:

A mimosa with some Advil on the side may aid my recovery. (Readjusts cool cloth on forehead.)

    • Sixer says:

NO, Lilac, NO. I am not recovered. You reminded me that The Bloke is actually married. You jolted me out of my usual childish, immature understanding of the nature of celebrity. That is, that hot men celebrities only exist as avatars for my entertainment. Sometimes they exist for me to lust after them. Sometimes for me to mock them. When I’m not thinking about them, they go POOF! and disappear into the ether of non-existence.

      I’ll never forgive you.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Sixer•

        *soothes*

Oh Sixer, there, there. All those things are still true dearie. And Lilacflowers would NEVER say those things. But we’ll find out who did.

        *continues soothing Sixer*

*offers a cuppa with a titch of liquor in it*

      • Sixer says:

        She did, she did!

I’m in a gin palace mood about it. Have we got one of those?

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Sixer, you just caused me to burst out laughing on the T where other Boston commuters are now moving away from me. Please forgive me. The Bloke is yours, all yours. And Mark, who is driving everywhere this morning, will deliver him to you shortly. Enjoy the threesome. Bill Nighy will check on you later too.

      • Lilacflowers says:

And Mark says there is some gin in the boot of the Jag. He’ll fix you something.

      • Sixer says:

        Hmph.

Only if you say THEY’RE ALL AVATARS. THEY DON’T EXIST WHEN YOU AREN’T THINKING ABOUT THEM.

      • Lilacflowers says:

They are all avatars. They don’t exist unless you are thinking of them. When you stop thinking of them, they go poof into a cloud of citrus-scented glitter.

      • Sixer says:

        Ok. I love you now.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I am so relieved. I feared a shanking was imminent.

      • Sixer says:

        I miss Eve.

If I shout JOSE MOURINHO IS A SEX GOD, do you think she’ll show up?

      • Lilacflowers says:

Perhaps if we all shout it together three times?

      • iceanna says:

anyone called the name of the all-knowing-always-wear-a-coat god Jose Mourinho??

    • Hello Kitty says:

I’ve got a junk food hangover from all the popcorn I ate while reading the comments.

      • Lindy79 says:

Richard E Grant once said popcorn was an instant recipe for a fart.
You might want to batten down the hatches

      • Nic says:

        “Instant recipe for a fart”

        Hahahahahahahahaha

      • sigh((s)) says:

I always wondered if my subconscious knew this, hence my aversion to popcorn.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@hello kitty, would you like some healthier options for that junk food hangover? Carrot sticks, almond butter, a pear? Or do you want to wallow? Chocolate dipped potato chips? A deep-fried Twinkie?

      • Lindy79 says:

Either that or you’re Richard E Grant…which would be AMAZING.

      • sigh((s)) says:

You got me. My cover has been blown. And I thought I was doing so well at covering my tracks…. Must hire cumberbatch’s PR….

      • Encumbered says:

I have long maintained the true test of a relationship is if you can fart freely in one another’s presence. Do you think said couple have consummated by mutual farting? Toot, toot….

On another note, I feel I must change my user name due to this betrayal….”Unencumbered” perhaps?

      • Hello Kitty says:

@Lilacflowers: I drank extra water today so I’m good to go now!

@ Encumbered: I have this image of Cumby crop-dusting SH when they’re home alone. Or do British people not fart at all?

    • 'P'enny says:

no, I’m still enjoy reading the denials and horrid comments.

And, I didn’t get an invite to the party, so it’s time to kidnap you know who again…

      • Nic says:

        What ‘denials and horrid comments’?

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, Mark went to collect you but you did not respond. He thought Charlie Hunnam’s motorbike in front of your house was an indication that you did not wish to be interrupted

    • Lilacflowers says:

@icerose, well, I am glad Thomas is safe. Be sure Johnny Lee Miller gets some ice cream too. He gets fractious when he is left out.

      • icerose says:

poor Johhny Lee is struggling to keep up with the finger banging and may leave Sherlock to take part on a TV show called Frankiestin women.
He is now on board and after a heart to heart with Thomas is out of the bathroom and discussing engagement presents.
Johhny Lee is thinking of a a Walnut Pump Pedal Organ, might help with his finger work. Tommy has just about decided on a hat stand.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@icerose, so glad Thomas has calmed down. Do not let him see those comments as Josa suggested. He’ll just freak out again. The suggested gifts sound perfect.

Could somebody please go to those other sites and remind them they still have Fassy? He’ll just roll his eyes at their hysteria

      • Lilacflowers says:

Icerose, Johnny Lee cannot leave Elementary for he is my favorite Sherlock.

      • icerose says:

Johnny says that he will not leave Elemenatary as long as we acknowledge that he not Benedict is the world’s highest authority on Sherlock’s sexual prowess.
I think this is quite reasonable because a married men are not as free to discuss matters of the bedroom and Johnny does now have dual nationality now . And to be honest after the whirlwind courtship with his secret girlfriend we cannot trust Benedict to give us the whole picture. He completely left out toe sucking and bondage.

I also took the precaution of confiscating his telephone and may I just say this man has multiple secret ladies in his address section so I took the precaution of deleting them all and replacing them with only those of us who can be trusted to share his charms.

    • Lilacflowers says:

@sigh((s)) we have a shiraz and a Zinfandel open, which would you prefer? Or Colin could go to the cellar for something else?

      • sigh((s)) says:

To the cellar for something sickeningly sweet. That would be lovely. Thank Colin for me. 😉

    • Lilacflowers says:

@Josa, no, no, no! Tommy cannot read those things! He’ll get scared and start crying and shaking and reciting the entire dialogue of MacBeth. There just isn’t enough ice cream, pudding, and Jameson’s in the world to calm him.

Besides, they don’t still have him. We do.

      • sigh((s)) says:

Why do I picture you maniacally rubbing your hands together and evil laughing?

      • Lilacflowers says:

Moi? Never! *Looks around over shoulders. Instructs Mark Strong to inspect the home for hidden cameras.*

  8. LP says:

I kind of couldn’t believe the comments the other day talking about her mediocre, no-talent career. She won the Samuel Beckett Award and seems to be a pretty solid director.

ETA: Just realized it totally looks like I AM Sophie Hunter, leaving anonymous positive comments about myself. Face palm.

    • pem says:

I can’t even open the other story anymore without it crashing my internets because of the length of the comment section, but from the comments I saw, all I can say is: Cumberbitches be crazy.

    • sigh((s)) says:

It’s alright, Sophie. We understand. 😉
Re: the SB award.. ‘She’ didn’t win it, she was part of a production that won it. (After a quick google search- you can do quick searches on people and not be a stalker)
I think some people just recognize that based on her CV, she does do some interesting stuff. I’m not saying she’s no-talent, I haven’t seen her work. Just that, considering she doesn’t have to work for $$, that maybe she would have a more involved career.
Most of my friends are theatre people. I know many, many people doing lots of avant garde theatre, but they all have real jobs, because doing an experimental theatre piece once every year or 2 does not pay the bills. In fact, it usually pays no bills. She said in an interview once that she was raised to be independent. With my working theatre knowledge, based on her resume, there is no way she is supporting herself through her art.
Not saying she’s a bad person or whatever. She’s very lucky she was born rich and can do whatever she wants and not have to worry about money. But I also side eye reports saying she’s so accomplished and so very talented when her CV doesn’t really reflect that.

      • LP says:

No, you’re right, my comment was pretty simplistic. I definitely agree that she’s hardly a bootstappy, paycheck-to-paycheck director and couldn’t work in that industry without family money behind her. I was mostly side-eyeing the comments that were all “what is she, nothing but a failed TV actress!”

      • Nic says:

Glad you said everything I’m way too lazy to, @sighs.

      • Lindy79 says:

*Sophie once said: “I can definitely relate to that as a trap [of being experimental]…. I’m hoping that if we fail, we fail gloriously. It would be terrible if it was a polite piece of theatre.”

Spoken like someone who is not relying on the income of said “theatre” to pay bills. She can’t help where she comes from, most would probably love to be able to what we love without having to worry about mortgages etc. hopefully everyone else involved in her projects/theatre has the same financial back up.

      • Nic says:

Lindy, I’m trying to warm to her. That quote did not help.
        😉

      • SlapYoMama says:

Was she born rich? Or up to her eyeballs in debt? That’s often the case here in the US when middle class kids go to Ivy League schools…

      • jammypants says:

Maybe she invests in stock for all we know. The guy who lives down my street doesn’t need to work bc he earns just sitting on the front porch.

      • icerose says:

@Sigh And here I thought she had produced and financed it .The last time I was doing experimental drama work we were living in in a not so nice area of Leeds on the dole having regular appointments with a little man who use to say “its all very well to want to ne involved in this arty farty stuff but the state cannot finance your careers so if you haven’t got wealthy parents get a job”So only one of us did soo I married him. Unfortunately he was not Benedict Cumbebatch and his parents objected to supporting two.

      • Cheryl says:

        Great story icerose!

      • sigh((s)) says:

        Lol, Icerose. Applauds. Love it.
I married mine, too, and sadly he is not independently wealthy. So guess who gets to frequently play stage manager/director/sound board operator/editor/general sounding board?
        *Points finger at self*

      • icerose says:

@Sigh how the purveyors of avant garde suffer without an independent income

      • Claire says:

        ITA

    • Cee says:

      +All the numbers out there.
Some comments were so petty and vicious…

      • Anne tommy says:

If I was distraught at the engagement I might call her the Batchbitch but I’m not so I won’t. I am going to start a Tommy for best man campaign / rumour…

  9. AG-UK says:

Good for them but hopefully it won’t be day to day of coverage (: Also she is exactly who I would imagine him with. I didn’t think it would be an A list actress or c model. Maybe he is having a midlife crisis.

Also why do they always have to say she’s (not just her) but they have to include intelligent.. yeah ok we get it from the line she went to Oxford I didn’t need any further confirmation.

    • Cee says:

Because, apparently, Benedict is incapable of dating an unintelligent woman. Thus the repetition of SH being intelligent, independent, artsy, so on and so forth.

    • Nic says:

Some of the dimmest wits I’ve known went to Oxford, so it’s not really proof of anything.

      • AG-UK says:

I agree. I work in finance and asst to 8 guys.. my guys are ok but there are the young ones that come in Cambridge/Oxford/ Eton.. yes book smart but lacking some common sense.
Me: You should check online to make sure the funds are there.
The Oxbridge grad: oh now where do I go how do I do that? doh
I have a 13 y/o who can work that out.

      • icerose says:

Why is it assumed he even needs an intelligent wife . He plays intelligent people but he is not some one I would call erudite or highly intelligent and he has said that himself. He has a reasonable vocabulary but actors work with words and they pick up a unusual words as part of their job.

    • Tara says:

She’s exactly the type of woman I thought he’d choose, too, AG-Uk. (Except I thought she’d be blonde).

It would have really surprised me if he ended up with a regular working girl with a 9-5 job. But, he knows what he likes, so hopefully it works out for them 🙂

      • icerose says:

an Oxford professor I knew use to say a degree means nothing today -if you need at least a masters to qualify as intelligent.

      • Claire says:

I agree with this statement. It’s the Masters where your ability to think is really tested. Bachelors is too scattered.

  10. Lara K says:

Meh. I’m not a fan of hers. Feels like he’s rushing this because he wants a family. I mean he was with the same woman for ten years without marrying…
Also, I really, really don’t like her stuffy attitude. I get he likes intelligent women, but just once I’d love to see him with someone both intelligent and fun. Someone who will mess his hair a little and loosen him up.
But if they are happy, good for them.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Lara K•

From all reports it was OP that didn’t want to marry — he did though.

      • Nic says:

To be fair, those ‘reports’ were just speculations on sites such as this. Neither he nor she have spoken in depth about the reasons for the split.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Nic•

Actually I meant from print or online articles from reputable sources. That’s where I glean most of my info from and some of the older articles about them speak about his desire to marry and start a family with OP. And a few even were bold enough to say that’s not where she was in her life.

      • Nic says:

That was still all guesswork on the part of the journos though, LS. Whether Olivia or he wanted kids and marriage never came directly from them except for that quote shortly before they broke up about ‘both wanting kids but not necessarily with each other’

  11. don't kill me i'm french says:

Is he doing a George Clooney?

    • PunkyMomma says:

If he is my only wish is to see ceramic otter centerpieces at their wedding reception.

    • Catherine says:

Do you mean rolling out gf for award season because I don’t get that vibe.

Btw the Lainey article about this is interesting
      http://www.laineygossip.com/Benedict-Cumberbatch-and-Sophie-Hunter-engaged/31750

      • am says:

i kind of agree. if this was some PR ploy (which doesn’t seem like him, but to be fair 1) none of us know him really and 2) ive not followed him super closely) would he really get engaged? i posted eleswhere that maybe, maybe he could be settling, but then again i didn’t really realize how long they had been friends before this. PR gf maybe, but am i a niave idiot to think PR engagement is too far? also, i doubt he would embarrass his parent by having them take out an ad and all only to know its PR/not that serious.

      • Caesar says:

@am I’m in the mood the play Devil’s Advocate today, but what if it were, say, the parents idea? Most actors would love to win an Oscar, if Benedict wins they get to vicariously win through him. As far as I know, neither of his parents have been nominated or been mentioned in concordance with an Oscar. His PR would be in on it, and encouraged it.

Like said, none of us know the real him, Sophie, his PR, or his parents. So, who know.

Either way, if his is a real engagement, and not some ploy, beat wishes to them, and I hope neither is settling or rushing.

      • Chammy says:

I had wondered if it was some kind of sham/plot/…
Cumberbatch’s fiance wouldn’t get as much hate from fanatic fans as his gf would.
Having a fiance looks good for the oscar campaign.

I think this might become one long engagement.

On the other hand: BC and SH seem to have a lot in common. Background and chosen field of profession are very similar. So maybe it is real. I wish them all the best.

      • Nic says:

Are their backgrounds that similar though? And as for profession, her acting didn’t take off and the directing doesn’t seem similar to any work he’s ever done.

      • Claire says:

While I wish this were a PR ploy, you can’t deny it’s more likely to be the even worse possibility: he’s rushing. 5 months? I think Martin/Lawrence announced they were DATING after being together approximately that long.

This is out of character for him, and I feel very sad he’s settling when we all know he doesn’t have to. I hope it wasn’t his mother pressuring him.

Also, PR/ElleUK fail on trying to get the story out they’ve been dating for a year. Whose idea was THAT? wowee.

  12. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I don’t understand the big deal about them only being together five months. They’re both grown. They knew each other from before i.e. they were friends. They’ve both been in long term relationships. When you get to a certain age, you know what you’re willing to put up with, and what you aren’t. And maybe they both want a family soon, and don’t want to wait. They’re both getting up there in age, in terms of baby making….so I don’t see the issue. I guess I’m not as invested in the failure or success in his relationships–I can barely tell them apart, even by name. Except for the ‘model’, Katia. I couldn’t believe the uproar over that one…..

    • LadySlippers says:

      •VG•

Or the DM is wrong. Lol

    • Erinn says:

It’s not like they met and then got married 5 months later, you know? I don’t have an issue with it. Not something that would be for me, but then again, we waited a long time to get married to get through school, find a house, etc.

  13. BendyWindy says:

    Maybe it’s a shotgun wedding. 😀

  14. LadySlippers says:

The Telegraph reported it differently stating that they’ve been together since the spring. So who knows?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/11209782/Benedict-Cumberbatch-is-he-engaged.html

They also did a nice write up on her.

  15. Lilacflowers says:

My parents met on the 4th of July and were married the following October. Together until death took him decades later. It happens. There are no set rules for relationships.

    • Tulip says:

Lilacflowers, that is so incredibly sweet:)

      • Lilacflowers says:

Thanks, Tulip, and they met at my aunt’s wedding, which my mom only attended as a replacement for her friend’s date.

      • Tulip says:

I..am…melting. That’s such an beautiful story and it definitely sound like it was always meant to be.

You have made my day and there aren’t enough happily crying smiley face in existence-I go to pieces over a great love story, so thanks for sharing yours:’)

    • Claire says:

I’m guessing this was in the mid 20th century when social rules were the norm and almost no one got divorced because it was socially unacceptable

  16. Marcy says:

@Lara K…just curious, why did he/Olivia break up? Pics I’ve seen seem to indicate a great match. ” Seem” I guess being the operative word.

  17. SuePerb says:

I think they look good together. Did anyone see him on Graham Norton the other night with his Madam Tussaud’s waxwork? Wow, it is so life like, the girl putting on Miranda Hart’s make-up said to her “Who is Benedict Cumberbatch staring at and why?” lol and his photobomb was hilarious.

On a totally different (and probably bizarre) note, I love captioning people. The guy who is below them in the seat looks like he is saying to his lady friend/wife “Do you think I would look good with this moustache? Ok, how about if it pointed down?”

    • Lindy79 says:

      She looks unsure…
“Obviously my moustache wouldn’t be flesh coloured, that would be just silly. Would it help if I got a marker and painted my finger?”

    • Jaderu says:

“Do you think I would look good with this moustache? Ok, how about if it pointed down?”
      hahahahahhahaha love it.

  18. Vesta says:

Wanda accepted the bird, and Wanda wants grandkids. ASAP.
    Hence the short courtship.

    • HBIC says:

Agreed. I think she’s pressuring him, too.

      • Lindy79 says:

He said he wants kids though, and the family thing. I think definitely there are parental influences at hand (The Times was their doing, a family tradition according to the DM) but I think it’s a little from column A and a little from Column B.

      • sigh((s)) says:

It’s the Hamlet mid-life crisis with possibly self-imposed and familial pressure to marry the ‘right sort of girl’ and make babies. Very aristo, as someone above said.
        That’s my 2cents.
        Whatever works for them, right?
I sure hope this cheers him up. He’s seemed very curmudgeonly lately. Because if you can’t get happy after an engagement announcement then you have major issues…

  19. OhDear says:

It seems not-entirely unusual. Obviously, I don’t know them. But going by the comments yesterday, my guess is that he wants a family and is thinking that he’s not getting any younger. He’s famous and rich, so many (if not most) of the people who approach him to date are doing so because of his status, not for him. He’s known her for a long time, presumably trusts and gets along well with her, so why not? They kind of seem like they’re in the “comfortable with each other and not needing to constantly be in physical contact” stage of a relationship (judging by the pictures).

I don’t mean to imply that he’s settling, btw. Even if he is…well, I’ve seen a lot of people do a lot worse for the sake of getting married by a certain age/to start a family.

    • Nic says:

Pretty sad that anyone would see being single as so nothing able that they’d marry someone who seems just convenient/suitable. Is rather remain single forever if I don’t meet someone who’s absolutely perfect for me.

      • Renee says:

Nic. ITA but people do settle for that very reason. Who knows what BC is doing. I’ve been wrong about him re: this whole situation so I can’t speculate anymore.

I wonder if they’ll show up here in the States together like a crazy-in-love couple?? Should be interesting….

      • OhDear says:

I agree, but it’s not our lives, ya know?

      • Lindy79 says:

I mentioned a friend here yesterday and it’s same as OhDear says. You can think what you like (which is what we’re doing on here in BC’s case, it’s not like he’ll ever read this) but it’s not our lives.
It’s not for me, but I get how some people do it.

      • Linn says:

Me too, but I don’t want children which makes things a lot easier.
Maybe I would see things differently if I was in my late thirties and always wanted to have a family of my own.

      • Mare says:

I’m 34 and you would be surprised how many people keep telling me I should marry literally anyone, no matter love and compatibility, just so I wouldn’t be alone. Seems a very common thing.

      • Ruth Dunbar says:

Ugh. I remember being 34 (I’m turning 41 next week) and having a “friend” tell me I should hurry up and get married before society cast me aside. What an absolutely horrible thing to say to a person.

        Still single, by the wayl

      • Me says:

Yeah, I’m une femme d’un certain age too. Definitely felt pressure to be matched with a friend who looks great on paper. I’d feel miserable day-to-day, which makes me feel worse because he’s a great guy. Just not “right” for me. But I’d have a stable, harmonious, financially solvent home and children. Sometimes, I still think about it :-/ But I’m a bish when I’m miserable. And he doesn’t deserve that.

      • Nic says:

        @ruth

Thumbs up! All power to you and I’m pleased you resisted those horrible pressures. I just can’t believe people say these things. I’d any believe people think it’s ok to tell others that they’re worthless if they’re single. I’m 35 and get the same. I hope I’m not alone forever because I want love the same as any human but if the alternative is someone convenient, I’d rather be. Group hug for you marvellous single ladies.

      • Claire says:

Beautiful ladies, three magical words: freeze your eggs.

      • Mimi Jones says:

You ladies do my heart good!
48 and single and after a weird 20 year LTR, I can honestly say I would much rather be a fairly happy single than miserably married

For BC, he honestly doesn’t strike me as the mature enough person to decide to marry someone after a short courtship and have it last – he seems far too immature. I may be totally wrong, but I think he has made a choice (most psychologists warn that six months into a relationship is infatuation- the googly eyes part) based on image and him facing 40 without kids and a partner.
Adore his acting, but as a person, he seems fairly needy – just based on interviews and interactions.
I actually think Sophie is not unattractive, she has lovely skin, so I wish them well.

    • Claire says:

I’m not sure why people assume just because people who have known someone famous before they were famous means they’re not going for him just for his status.

That’s a huge jump and fallacy to be making.

  20. blended says:

i’m glad some of you are buying what he’s selling. i on the other hand am not. and i was one of those fans who defended him all the time. those of us who have followed him closely these last few years can see the obvious changes, and the weirdness of this whole situation. he committed the cardinal sin of celebrity: he took himself too seriously. this is about carving out an image for himself, not anything else.

this is most definitely an award season stunt. he could have waited until spring to announce an engagement. he’s not that old yet; a few more months would not have killed him. the very calculated appearance at a pap hotspot with your rumoured girlfriend was the first indication that he was playing the PR game.
so in the end he became a run-of-the-mill celeb. he’s no different from any of them. it’s almost depressing in its predictability. they will have children with snooty names, they will probably have a boring marriage, he will cheat (prob with a costar), they will separate/divorce/work it out, etc. it’s all celebrity 101.
i still think he’s an amazing actor, but i wish i hadn’t put him on so high a pedestal to begin with.

    • Nic says:

I don’t know what’s going on but whatever it is is weird. Definitely agree that there was absolutely no need to announce it now. He’s gonna be plagued with questions during TIG promo and I fear his oscar campaign is going to make me want to sh£& in his cornflakes by the time February comes around.

    • Jsilly4 says:

      Wow. Just….wow.

    • Renee says:

I’m not buying anything either, Blended. I bet they’ll put on a show now. Next up: show up somewhere looking so crazy in love

      • blended says:

haha yes. and the other issue is how miserable and sullen he has been looking lately. not the look of a man so in love. more like the look of a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders. draw your own conclusions.

      • gg says:

Very curious to see if she will be with him on the red carpet in NY. That would be the moment for the “look, we’re so in love” reveal. I don’t know about it being just a PR move – surely he would not drag his poor parents into something that cynical? But yeah I agree with everyone who says this seems off. Let the baby bump watch begin! If they marry before Christmas I guess we will know. I would not be surprised if they marry in secret and don’t tell anyone until the deed is done.

      • SlapYoMama says:

I’m totally on baby bump watch… I want to start suggesting names. Something regal and aristocratic.

      • Moodgirl says:

        @blended

Maybe he looks sad because he has had to jump through the hoops and conditions she set by not wanting to be seen in public with him. We know that he had no problem showing his affection for his other girlfriend but SH would not allow this. The hiding, cloak and dagger crap was probably her idea and it wore on him because it just is not him. He got sick of it and it showed. If you
love someone and want to be with them the rest of that crap be damned. If I could find someone to love me the way I deserve I would turn backflips in the street. She sounds childish and controlling. He should take note on how she is so manipulative she is.

      • Claire says:

If it’s an award seasons stunt, the assumption would be they’re not intending to get married…not yet anyways.

I don’t know whose idea this whole secrecy thing was, probably unwise to assume. But it looks bad in light of how public it’s suddenly become.

Is she manipulative? I don’t know. She definitely has an attitude problem, between the Brighton coffee girl’s story and the video we have of her at the LFF premiere. I wanted to see him be with someone who’s kind and fun.

ALSO, I’m surprised no one is talking about how SH had a tumblr called fleur–fleur where she was mocking BC fans at one point. It was taken down maybe a day or so before the engagement was announced? I’m hoping someone took screencaps.

      • An says:

Not her Tumblr, it’s either a fan or troll, and it’s still up:

        http://annickpass.tumblr.com/

    • Sandi says:

      *sighs*

-There’s much better timing for an Oscar campaign. Month before Oscar voting begins is ideal.

-Pap stunts usually involve getting a picture of the couple together. Those pics were useless, which is why no big publication ran them.

-You really have to think his PR sucks pretty badly to buy this.

First leak in April said his secret girlfriend is who didn’t want to be out and about, not him.

Second said he was upset there was a leak they couldn’t identify. Then a few more leaks, then someone told the Fail about the Edinburgh parent trip 2 weeks ago.

TL DR, someone else was probably going to spill it if he didn’t, as that’s kind of what’s been happening all along.

      • Nic says:

I’m not saying that this is part of an oscar campaign but as an aside, the campaigning lasts months. It’s a slow build up and months of being ‘seen’

Don’t pay any attention that ‘secret girlfriend’ nonsense in April. I’m nearly 100% that was just clickbait guesswork and nothing to do with her. He was pretty much away for the entirety of 2014 up until then.

I also don’t buy for a second that there was a naughty friend with a blabber mouth who was giving a little bit of boring baseless info to a paper every few weeks. And the ‘he’s annoyed about the leaks’ were part if that national enquirer style gossip site back in April.

As for Edinburgh, people on twitter were talking about it and the daily mail thought it would make a dull story.

      • Sandi says:

I agree the campaigning lasts months, but this isn’t part of it. For an announcement of this nature, you want it fresh in the voters’ minds. Most are not fans and won’t recall by ballot time. None of the US gossip shows even ran it.

Very soon after the initial April gossip, he was seen at the Hay Festival with Hunter. It was before the Open. And the Mirror sent someone to her mother’s house in Scotland, which means they knew it had legs. Then Star ran a tiny bit saying he was engaged. Too much coincidence for me.

Now, had his PR been behind the leaks, it would have had better coverage and a more even execution. This looks more like someone they knew offering info tips for a little cash. The Mail ran ‘the engagement was imminent’ last. Could have been another lucky guess or they were going to seriously run it once their source confirmed it, spreading it everywhere.

[Yes, I work in media LOL.]

      • Nic says:

He was seen with her at hay literally at the very end of may. And I don’t think the mirror sent anyone to her mothers house necessarily..papers usually just call or indeed make up the quote entirely. Who knows.
The mirror doesn’t care about a story having ‘legs’ either.

The Star didn’t run an engagement story either? It was the Mail fishing around for nonsense on their web page after a boring story was made out of him being in edinburgh and talked about on tumblr.

I’m not saying his pr are behind it but for the sake of argument, not all pr is ‘in your face’, it’s done subtely, leaks here, tips there. More coverage would be too much.

I know there’s a LOT of guesswork and leaps going on here, but the idea that he has an impish pal getting handfuls of cash for little vague tips being dragged out for months is a stretch too far for me. This stuff just isn’t interesting enough. Man may be dating? That wouldn’t need a long leading build up.

      • Lindy79 says:

The snide part of me thinks that the lady doth protest too much and the leaks were coming, not from her, but by someone close to her.

Somewhere online I saw a hilarious collage of pics of her at events over the years and she’s staring into the camera at each one, even if the person she is speaking to is looking and talking to her and unaware they’re being photographed.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Sandi•

        I’m with you.

        •Nic•

The Telegraph has reported that the two have been together since spring. Click bait it was but it sounds as if the details were true nonetheless. We were told then that this secret gf has a serious career and wants it respected and does not want any publicity from dating BC to impact her serious career. (Writing that does make her sound a tad pretentious)

        •Lindy

My guess as to where the leaks came from? Mummy Dearest in Edinburgh. I think she was just SO excited her baby had snagged Sherlock and knew they were talking marriage already last spring (BC’s circle doesn’t talk much). She loves Sophie and tried to respect her daughter’s wishes BUT excitement overcame reason.
She crowed way too much and probably had fantastic tips for the papers. Total speculation on my part.

      • Sandi says:

Star did as well. Not a huge story, just a banner saying they were engaged a couple of weeks ago in their print ed. I know the Mirror is crap but if they decided to pick up the phone or whatnot, something prompted it. It was months after the Open.

Basically, it’s not a huge conspiracy theory. Happens all the time. But with the odd timing, I wonder if his PR got wind of a bigger outlet planning to run an engagement story or ‘together’ photos.

I agree that this is all guesswork. People are also constructing a personality for her based on 10 year old interviews. Maybe she sucks, maybe not, I don’t know, but 20-something me is not 30-something me.

I apologize in advance in case anything sounds rude. Some of his fans elsewhere are so very irritating.

      • Nic says:

No, as I say.. That terrible ‘showbizspy’ article was right back in April. He was travelling/working Asia/Oz and then in LA beginning of the year cons etc..
She wasn’t on the scene then. I also wouldn’t call her career serious either.
The Telegraph are just guessing I would think and May is spring anyway.

Like I say, who knows if there’s someone feeding info to the press, but as for it being a buddy of his, every couple of months giving some boring tips to the media in exchange for cash. Like I say, that’s just too far fetched a grasp for me.

      • blended says:

I don’t buy for a second that he was with her in april during the sgf nonsense. If anything he may have been with kinvara. He was seen at events more with her. Then she dropped off mysteriously.

      • Lindy79 says:

LadyS, I was thinking that myself. Not that she had the papers on speeddial but that she was telling friends.

      • Nic says:

        @sandi

There was a crazy fan tweeting sightings and pics to tabloids. Simon boyle who wrote the initial mirror piece was sent a twitter link from crazy a week earlier. That’s where it came from.

This is the only site I can stand. Intelligent, thoughtful, accepting, not gushing but not unnecessarily nasty. I’ve given up on all other sites right now because the fakery and obsequiousness is unbearable.

      • sigh((s)) says:

        Hahaha…love it Lindy.

      • icerose says:

yes but the engagement is just the beginning and wedding preparations will him in in the buzz framework long after TIG has become a memory. And every time it comes up TIG and the possibility of a nomination will be mentioned will be mentioned.

      • blended says:

you’re forgetting that he is about to embark on a U.S. press tour, and the TIG premiere in ny. this is actually perfect timing.

    • am says:

you really think that he would drag his parents into this mess, her parents, his friend etc all for PR? That he would get married and even have children for PR? that seems quite extreme, no? I could see settling, rushing because he freaked about beingn single/ not a father by a certain age (and it may not even be a neg thing). sometimes when i read these theories i end up thinking “am i the naive dope who just doens’t get it” when i end up thinking that is a hell of a lot of effort for a movie and possible award. he has been hyped before and none of this…

      • blended says:

I’ll say it again: it’s about image building. Redmayne is doing the same thing, but it makes more sense with him because he’s been with his fiancee for a while. You may not think these things matter, but they do if you, as an actor, want to be a power player. If you want to leave a certain impression on your peers, and the public. Clooney is a good example. I don’t buy what he’s selling either. He wants to project a certain image.
I’m sure ben wants to have a family with her, in a ‘I guess you’ll do’ way. He can sell her to wanda easily. She ticks all the boxes.

      • MissMary says:

No one is having kids yet… I do think there’s actors not above a PR relationship. And I dont know if BC is one of them but I do know it’s happened a LOT in H’wood/acting history, and if this is one, it’s not even the most scandalous PR relationship. It’s just dull.

      • icerose says:

not saying the engagement is a PR student but the timing is suspect

  21. HBIC says:

Call me crazy b/c I don’t know him… but this relationship will not last.

She’s not the one. He’s tired of being single, and he’s ready to settle down, and she’s the right choice on paper. I’m sad that he’s making such a knee jerk decision… but I feel for him b/c he’s expressed wanting a family for a long time.

But I have a feeling this one won’t work out. And I have my fingers crossed that he will meet the right woman before he walks down the aisle with Sophie.

PS – And if this is truly a PR move… oh gosh. How sad.

    • Arch says:

I’m with you on this. He doesn’t give that glow of a man in love. I get more chemistry from Kimye than these two. I hope if they don’t find happiness togetherness they find it before they make irreversible mistakes that involve children.

      • Claire says:

Am I mad to think K and K actually do love each other? With each other’s fame, but I’m sure they’ve deluded themselves into thinking it as actual love and those two are just nuts about each other IRL.

    • HBIC says:

I think what really makes me sad is that I can’t believe that he didn’t hold out for true love. He seemed like he wanted it so much.

Oh well. If this is what he wants… then good luck to him.

    • Claire says:

Thanks for another lovely post HBIC. I’m with you entirely. I hope he wakes up in time. I made a post above about the many witnesses to her horrible attitude, and that she was baiting his fans on tumblr. Gross. He needs better.

      • blended says:

do we know if it’s really her tumblr though? it would be so very weird if it was really hers. she had a pic on there with the eggsbenedish watermark.

      • GeeMoney says:

        @claire
Thanks for the compliment. I try to be rational… and I just like him so much. I really do want him to be happy.

  22. krinata says:

A bit late in here. I considered myself part of the ‘cumber collective’ a while back, but nowadays not so much. I felt like in some way, BC decided to ‘sell out.’ I still haven’t read all the comments but I did also come up with a conspiracy theory: that SH is pregnant and BC wants the baby but not a wedding. BC’s parents also want the baby (and may also still be quite conservative) so they push for a wedding, hence their official announcement so BC can’t back out. BC is trapped in the situation and feels miserable so he looks like it.

But otherwise, if marriage is what both of them truly want, then best wishes and good luck. 🙂

    • gg says:

I don’t know about his parents being conservative – I think his mother was 5 months pregnant when she married his father, and they had been living together before she was formally divorced from her first husband. But yeah, I would bet money Sophie is pregnant.

  23. Kim1 says:

WOW The post on yesterday about this guy received over 700 comments! Is that a record? I watch entertainment shows like ET,Extra, etc none of them even mentioned his engagement. As a matter of fact I can’t recall ever seeing him featured on any of them.

    • Tara says:

That’ll change when he’s nominated for an Oscar. But, he still probably won’t be a US entertainment show fixture until he gets a huge role (like Dr. Strange). Then he’ll be covered a lot more.

Few people I know IRL know who he is yet. My dad calls him Bernard Cumberbatch. Ha.

      • Lizzy says:

My mom calls him “the ugly guy you like so much”…..

The other day on the phone she was going on how she saw him on TV and omg his face is so long, and with her mummy pity voice “he has such a long chin that boy and he is really not pretty poor sod”.

I am ashamed to say I was in stitches.

  24. Tulip says:

“I’m hoping that if we fail, we fail gloriously. It would be terrible if it was a polite piece of theatre.”

IF this is her talking about their relationship, she truly hasn’t been in a bad break up or she has and then suppressed the memory of it. Do not jinx yourself, Sophie.

If it was about her theatre productions, then, um, yay for her opinion.

    • Nic says:

That’s one hell of a pretentious quote, I gotta say.

    • Tara says:

She’s talking about theatre production. But, it is sort of an odd thing to say. If you’re not an experimental theatre director, that is. I can’t imagine many people would want to fail gloriously. Lol.

      • Nic says:

Oh yeah, I know it’s about theatre. Lindy posted it further up but yep, so pretentious. Don’t care if it fails but as long as it’s a spectacle then it’s a success. Turning up her nose at ‘polite theatre’ ugh.
Seems the kind of thing ‘experimental theatre’ directors say when they know something is rather sh&t

      • Lindy79 says:

It’s all very “it’s better to completely bomb for doing something avant-garde that people talk about, than to limp away quietly on a boring project” which is a bit “its all about the art” and pretentious and implies she doesnt really care if she makes any money or is successful. I get the idea and it certainly falls in line with some of her project choices.

As I said above, she has the luxury of family money so *she* can afford to take projects with that attitude. Hopefully she was kidding, or everyone she is involved with has the same money supporting them. For some it’s their income and they can’t float from project to project not being screwed if it crashes.

Wonder what she made of Star Trek….

      • Nic says:

Wonder if that was her ethos when she was flopping around with a dead octopus or flailing around on the floor at an event with a cushion up her dress. Lol

Yeah, it infuriates me. These people have never had that fear hanging over their heads that they might not be able to pay the rent or afford food. They can play at life and just pick up hobbies . Like you say, they don’t need to be successful at it because they can just flounce on to the next thing.

It’s also the insinuation that ‘polite’ theatre is unthinkable and worse than failure. Ergh. The snobbery of that is insufferable.

      • sigh((s)) says:

What’s slightly odd about her career to me is it seems sort of aimless. Most theatre artists, or artists in general, tend to have a niche or specialty. Even under the umbrella of experimental or avant-garde theatre you usually have a specific discipline or concentration that you’re passionate about, be that physical theatre, puppetry, classics, etc. She seems to be all over the map. Acting in an indie movie, directing a puppetry show, acting in a network episode of something random, directing a technology based show, doing weird octopus videos? (I have not seen the octopus, but it sounds…interesting).
Not saying that people don’t branch out, but usually there’s a concentration theme in your CV, especially when you don’t have to take things to pay the bills. If you have no money issues it affords you the ability to do the specialty you’re passionate about. I don’t see the passion in her CV.

      • gg says:

and don’t forget the car commercial she just did! Yes, very avant-garde.
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQdmxBm0Qg4

      • J- says:

that’s because everyone’s assuming she doesnt take anything to pay the bills. i think she does though, like a lot tbh. her online cv is missing a lot of entries but i don;t think it’s for directing, not sure how that works

i can only find old interviews, from when she was younger but it sounds like she only did the music album for money. the guy hired her from an audition. she was living a shared house with other people, i don’t think she’s super rich.

      • Nic says:

I don’t think anyone’s saying she’s super rich but she doesn’t have to worry about putting food on the table or paying her rent. And I don’t think that’s down to her own work.

      • MountainRunner says:

I’m curious why people think that her parents are upper class, ’cause her family sounded more middle class to me. Here in the US, anyone can go to an expensive uni if they can get the student loans. Do things work differently across the pond? I wonder if that posh image is funded more by student and credit card debt, than by Daddy Warbucks.

      • J says:

no thats what im saying, too, MoutainRunner. like she went a drama school in france but it was waaaay cheaper than the ones in the uk and on the low tution end in france too. dad ditched the family and a good job when she was younger.

plus i found an interview with the people who own the puppet theater and she was their longest art director (3 years) because they’re apparently hell to work for. and her clothes…other than the premiere it’s all off the rack stuff. idk I think she does whatever to stay afloat. i dont think she’d be doing car commericals if she had money tbqh.

      • Nic says:

There’s no way she’d be living her lifestyle in London if she wasn’t living off other money. Her work is not funding her existence.

      • Maggie says:

        @ Nic

“There’s no way she’d be living her lifestyle in London if she wasn’t living off other money. Her work is not funding her existence.”

How do you know what her lifestyle is like in London? For someone who disparages her and Benedict at every opportunity you sure appear to know a lot about them, their incomes, their lifestyle, their friends and their movements.

It must be exhausting wasting so much time on some people you don’t like.

      • lindy79 says:

I suppose when you look at the volume of the more avant garde stuff versus her doing it for the paycheck stuff, it’s not balanced. There is far more of the first. The schools in France may be cheaper…doesn’t mean they’re cheap by average standards. Plus from the bit I’ve read she runs in fairly high circles (not royalty but certainly VERY upper middle class at least.
As others said, she may have other incomes but they’re not in the art world or they would be evident.

      • Nic says:

Well for a start Maggie, I LIVE in London so I have a good idea how expensive it is just to live averagely day to day here and secondly for her foreign travel, theatre visits alone that would be very tough on her level of work. Who’s saying I know a lot about her? I know what’s made public. Her work, her fairly snooty attitudes and her weird behaviour of late and that’s what I’ve been talking about same as others on here. I’m not interested in her as unlike you, I don’t feel the need to now become a fan of hers too just because she’s engaged to him. So no I don’t know a lot about ‘them’. I’m a fan of *his*. And when did I say I know about her ‘friends or movements’?

Just because I’m not obsessed with him enough to be doing nothing but praising him and chastise anyone who dares to criticise him as you seem to come on here to do regularly, that doesn’t mean I’m ‘disparaging him at every opportunity’

Seriously , just because I’m not leaping up and down every time he takes a dump with how incredible and faultless he is, that means I don’t like him?
Do you think he’d be thankful for obsessed fans like you who seem to religiously worship him? No, he’d be terrified.

      • Maggie says:

        @ Nic
You are making an awful lot of assumptions about me from the few times I have posted. Yes I do jump in to defend him against some of the particularly nasty or fabricated statements but I am certainly not an obsessed fan. I admire his work and think he is a decent person but I do not go onto any person’s board or posts to put them down or criticise their motivations when I really don’t know them from Adam.

Yesterday’s posts and todays, generally, are pretty horrible to read and I feel the need to comment when the negative stuff gets too much.

I cannot say I am a fan of Sophie as I know very little about her but these negative posts are just so tiring and plain mean, on the whole.

But of course if you rail against the nasty stuff of course you must be an obsessed fan. Right!

      • Me says:

7 words for you: It’s a “RAH” thing, you wouldn’t understand.

      • Nic says:

        Maggie,

You’ve been on here quite a few times to ‘stand up’ for him when someone wasn’t bestowing golden praise.
You really have some growing up to do if you think this board has the ‘nastiness’ you speak of and the posts which are ‘horrible to read’. There’s criticisms and questions on here, people are by and large intelligent and critical and don’t treat him like an perfect prince never to be questioned. I take it you’d like it if the far far too overfamiliar squeals of delight and excitement were overflowing here? As far as I’m concerned, that’s far creepier than anything you’ll read here.

People are quite rightly puzzled about him, his weird behaviour and choices etc.
As for her, we discuss what we know about her and if you want that to be some brown nosing spectacle, the you’ve come to the wrong place.
But to call it ‘plain mean’ is infantile and crying that makes you seem like an obsessed fan, yes.

  25. browniecakes says:

Funny you should mention Jeremy. Some people think Jeremy married Soni to boost his Oscar chances for Kill the Messenger. And now talk is Cumby got engaged as part of his Oscar campaign. What is the correlation? The oldsters in Hollywood who vote for the Oscars probably don’t know or care about these guys and their personal lives.

    • Josa says:

Call girl is also baby’s mama, so point for being responsible father, Jeremy. Nowadays, trying to win an Oscar is like campaigning in politics, faked marriage faked family happy ever after. It’s just weird.

  26. Chris says:

Good Lord, can’t help but I have to give a comment. 😛 Has everyone ever read the horoscope of Ben??? Mean not the cancer-one, mean the radix , the birthhoroscope? There is it in black and white. He got the mooen in aries. Therefore there’s a disposition to act without due concideration. Ben is not the man who thinks twice. He feels and next he act without thinking. So we know him the last years in interviews especially. I’m pretty sure he’s so in love and in need of a family he don’t think about if this think could go wrong. He want it and he takes it! He was desperatly looking for a girl to have a familiy with. And Sophie??? Does we have to say “poor Sophie”? I remember an interview with Bens mother Wanda, when she said, think to Caitlin Moran: Find him a bird I want to have grandchildren! Oh dear it was so akward!!! I thought I wouldn’t want to be this doughter-in-law. Think Ben is absolutely the dominant one and Sophie is influencable (it’s also in her horoscope) So we can be anxious to see what will happens next. :DD
BUT! If Sophie is the right one and they are really in love with each other and it will last. So I wish them a wonderful life together and say: You lucky things!!

    • 'P'enny says:

Seriously, astrology again? come on! would you like to read my palm or look at the cards?

      “poppycock”

    • Cate says:

Not about astrology at all, but Mrs Cumberbatch IS quite intimidating. She once gave me the once over at a signing and it was quite the terrifying experience. Not a lady you’d want to cross or get on the wrong side off I think…

  27. Joanie says:

Boy, the thirst for that Oscar is real.

  28. Renee says:

Just went on Tumblr to find BC’s fans saying they’ll hunt anyone down who dares to speak ill of SH. Guess I’m not allowed to say that she sounds pretentious.

    • Nic says:

      Stay off tumblr. Always.

      #sagewisdom

    • 'P'enny says:

how the wind changes, they have bitching about non-stop for months and now its all we defend her, blalaladldlaaaa

      • sigh((s)) says:

Am I the only one that thinks it’s way more creepy to suddenly be all ‘omg! His fiancé is perfect and wonderful and beautiful and starting the baby countdown?’

If I was marrying someone, and everyone who ever had a crush on him started telling me how amazing and perfect I was and talking about our babies I would start running and never stop.

        Or maybe that’s just me.

      • Nic says:

        @sighs

Nope you’re not the only one. It’s uber creepy. And did I read that Cumberbatchweb are arranging a donation to charity because of the engagement or was that just a terrible nightmare?

      • sigh((s)) says:

? Donation for what? I don’t know. This is literally the only site I go to about him. If they link it here I’ll take a gander but I don’t do tumblr/blogs/twitter. They scare me. 🙂

      • Nic says:

Yep. They scare me too. I heard that Cumberbatchweb has organised a donation thing to ‘celebrate the engagement’ like his birthday instead of people sending cards/presents. But too scared to check it out for myself. The fawning would strike me dumb, I think. Nuts. Completely nuts.

      • Cate says:

I just find it’s strange that it’s ‘so not done’ to speak ‘ill’ of Sophie because ‘we don’t know anything about her’, but on the other hand it’s perfectly reasonable to be over the moon because she’s BC’s fiancé now. WHY? Still don’t know her after all, she could be a real pain in the behind…Anyway, with that reasoning one can only be neutral about it. So instead of congratulating the oh so happy couple, I’ll just be Switzerland. Or maybe just ‘meh’.

Better save the over the top congratulations for an actual wedding or babies, dear Tumblr fans… 😉

      • geeklib says:

I actually thought the diehards on tumblr vomiting rainbows about the whole thing was far more creepy than if they’d expressed their disappointment.

    • MissMary says:

They’re nannies, big time, on TUmblr. They were “omg so happy” for him and Kinvara and “Omg guyz it’s true love!” with Anna James, and as soon as those were done/proven nonexistent, they were on to the next mystery date he’d been spotted with to coo over her. IT’s like some of them think he will see their posts and show up with flowers and a confession he’s really in love with them for taking such good care of his online rep.

      • Renee says:

They’re nannies who threaten anyone who dares to say one negative thing about Sophie. Actually threatening other posters. And yes, they’re organizing a donation.

      • Dara says:

@MissMary – I finally ventured onto Tumblr at about 10pm last night and was truly slack-jawed at the about-face. In the space of a day it went from denying Sophie was even secret-girlfriend material to “OMG we knew all along it was true love”.
The OMG’ers fell into 4 categories:
        1) Her delicate, noble beauty is perfect for our Cumberbatch!!!
        2) Squeee, there will be Cumberbabies!!!
        3) Look how mature we are by being oh so happy for them!!! See, we’re not crazy!!
        4) All of the above, and a pox on the haters!!!

There were a few exceptions, but you had to wade through a lot of nonsense to get to them. I wonder if those that are truly pissed or devastated have gone into seclusion or are leaving their hysterics untagged. And, for the record, I think all the OMG’ers doth protest too much. Girls, I would have believed you more if you had just gone ‘meh, big whoop’ and moved on.

      • MissMary says:

Oh good gods. IDK which is more cringey, the nanny-ing or the donation. I Don’t mean donating is a bad idea–it’s an awesome idea. BUt do it for YOUR desire to donate, not to impress a celeb!

      • Lizzy says:

I saw one who said she was so happy she “shed some tears” and was all freaking out in her car to work and “couldn’t stop smiling all day” she was THAT happy!

I slowly walked back out of the room and never looked back. How can your personal happiness hinge on some strangers life. Most of those nannies are married themselves, are they all just bored housewives? Is that his tumblr fanbase?

      • lindy79 says:

The donation thing….wow. I’m assuming to a charity? Or are they doing a whip around to pay for the flowers?
        Jesus..ok then..wow

Wouldn’t these people be better served finding charities they themselves are passionate about and donating/volunteering/fundraising there?
(They may well do but….wow )

      • Dara says:

@Lizzy, you hit it exactly, why all the hoo-ha about a stranger? Now, I admit I couldn’t stop smiling all day – but that’s because I knew the ensuing sh#tstorm was going to be “more epic than six Viking funerals put together” – thanks to whoever came up with that description, it’s perfect. And it lived up to my expectations.

Having said that, when and if my current celeb crush (it’s not the Otter) gets engaged/married/impregnates-a-random-hook-up/proves to be a right bastard then I shall be distraught – for about a day (ok, maybe a week) but I will not be proclaiming any of those feelings to the world at large… they aren’t real, they were summoned out of my own imagination and that’s where they’ll stay until I come to terms with them. That person is free to live their life as they wish without keeping it secret – it won’t stop me from seeing movies, watching plays or television they are in, so no worries on that account.

      • sigh((s)) says:

I don’t think anyone here is forking their eyeballs over this. It’s been fun, really. Like gossiping about the upstairs neighbors with their strange living arrangements.
Viking funerals must be a hoot!

      • gg says:

Thank god for Tumblr Saviour – I blacklisted “Sophie Hunter” and “Hunterbatch” (yes, they have an actual “ship” name, like Johnlock). Hopefully things will calm down in a week or so. I just want to look at the pretty pictures again…..

      • MissMary says:

@Dara: *shudder* I had to blacklist BC and a host of other terms because I was so sick of the “OMG she’s so perf! OMG she’s beautiful! Look I photoshopped cumberbabies!” (WHY people are so obsessed with other people reproducing is beyond me–I think it’s gross and presumptuous to push your agenda on someone, no matter what they’ve said or not said about reproducing, and I say that as someone who has a kid and was not shy about discussing my pregnancy lol).

If their relationship goes to pot, I’m willing to bet on the same “Omg she’s so wonderful *wibble*” people cursing her a blue streak because “how dare she break Benny’s heart” and then linking him to every woman he stands next to because “Omg he’s heartbroken” and their darling SH will be forgotten.

      • Dara says:

@MissMary – I finally hit my limit after the third or fourth iteration of “imagine Benny’s face when he sees Sophie walk down the aisle” or “imagine Benny’s face when he holds his newborn otter” with photos inserted of the Batch gazing adoringly off-camera at something/someone. The photo of him holding a baby even resurfaced as proof he yearns for a family. He managed to hold a friend’s kid for 5 seconds without dropping or maiming the little nugget. Shrug – so what. It does not mean he’ll make a PERFECT father.

If it is true love, good for them. Live your life and who cares what anyone else thinks. Many happy returns. If it’s for other reasons, then it’s a lot of trouble for no good reason imo. At this point, I’m not going to even begin guessing which of those two options it might be.

    • Claire says:

honey, join us on eggsbenedish. there ARE some teenage types who are overly paranoid and make really weird assumptions, but there are some good folks there and we call it like we see it 🙂

  29. Icarus says:

Five months. I don’t see this ending well. I’m basing this off of people I know who’ve done similar things, and ended up stuck in miserable relationships they can’t get out of, bad and dramatic break ups, messy divorces. Yes, it works well for some, but I find this weird for a guy who’s prided on his intelligence to get engaged so quickly. Just because you know someone for years doesn’t mean you really know someone. Dating and be friends are entirely different.

I do hope they find happiness, if not with each other then with people who make them happy. If they’re not happy, I hope for both their sakes, they realize it before anything permanent damage happens. Best wishes either way.

    • MissMary says:

I tend to sway this way, Icarus. I don’t wish either of ’em ill but this whole thing is just weird. Maybe they’re truly in love and it’s awesome and amazing but eh. Then again, it’s not my relationship so who knows–maybe “meh” is how they roll and they enjoy cloak and dagger. I dated my h.s. sweetheart for 13 years, we got engaged, and I find out two weeks before the wedding they were not who I thought they were. This is someone I’d known over half my life. My current SO, I knew for several years and we ‘re still not married, just shacking up, lol, and raising our child, but I’m still gunshy after the whole “Oh, I’ve known someone so long, surely I know them!” debacle. So yes, you can know someone for years and not “KNOW” them or find out they’re not who you wanted/thought they were.

      • lindy79 says:

Exactly. Not that i expect anyone to know but i presume they’re living together?

      • MissMary says:

Who knows… rumors run rampant and someone claimed to have seen mail with her name on it addressed to his address (and oy that was a brouhaha) but who knows for sure.

    • Claire says:

Two words I pray for, Oh Lord: LONG ENGAGEMENT

  30. lola says:

I am quite surprised how many positive comments this farce of an relationship got. If she is not pregnant (hope she isn’t or isn’t even lying about it) this is totally ridiculous. If he was happy (happy like someone who is really in love) I wouldn’t even twitch but he seems miserable and exhausted. I like how for example Kiera or Eddie R. look happy, but this no, no, no, no.
I will say what I think: it will not last long either engagement or the marriage (if they actually get to the altar to save their faces – mostly Ben, Sophie is probably over the moon to be the golden hen (like her family))

    • Lindy79 says:

Funny you should bring Keira up, she’s a fine example of how to have a good yet private relationship while being famous but also not acting like a hoity toity precious snowflake.

      • Nic says:

Yeah. The red carpet stuff, keira and hub travelled together and he just quietly got out and waited for her at the edge. No fuss. No pretension. No games.

      • Tara says:

Let’s see how they behave now that the news is out 🙂

Maybe she’ll be at the NYC premiere and will hang out in the back with the rest of the husbands/wives/significant others. I’m curious to see which way this goes.

      • MissMary says:

@Tara: I’d be shocked if she “hung out”. Stood there and did that pained smile she does in all the pics I’ve ever seen of her but I doubt she’d “hang out.”

Keira and her DH are a great example of “private but not hidden”. Same with Daniel Radcliffe and his gf. They exist, they don’t play cloak and dagger games, but they do not discuss private things with the media other than bare minimum, and even then, barely.

      • Tara says:

I’m unsure at this point. Everything I ‘know’ about her suggests that there’s no way she’ll hang out on the red carpet. If she goes to the premiere, she’ll duck into the theatre separately like LFF.

But, at some point she will kind of have to go to public events with him and be seen with him, yes? I can’t imagine that her being so camera shy, or whatever it is, will be helpful to the relationship. Might still be too soon for her to feel comfortable with all that, though.

By Bafta time, I definitely think she’ll do red carpets with him.

      • GeeMoney says:

Question of the day : What ACTRESS doesn’t want to walk a red carpet?!? That’s part of her damn job. MAKES NO SENSE.

      • Nic says:

C’mon, though. She’s no actress, is she.

    • Renee says:

Farce is a good word for it. Besides the behavior at LFF, look at how he left her at the car at the pap hotspot restaurant. I mean, wtf was that?? They couldn’t even walk into a restaurant together?

    • lola says:

I mean I get the quest for privacy but taking it to this extreme is plain weird. In love and getting married and acting like that? I thought more of him. I really did. The person you marry and love that holds the couple together should be above what others think. I am disappointed. It is not that I think I could have a chance with him, but seeing him in interviews and reading them planted an idea that men like that (but in normal life not in the showbiz) really exist. And now he turned the page and did this, with this one. If she rubs so many people wrongly it actually means that there is something blah about her (and after seeing her family’s response i think he got himself in a bit of trouble) .

I think he is a good bloke, who acts before he thinks and I hope this will not bite him in the bottom for the rest of his life.

      • Claire says:

i hope he wakes the heck up before he walks down that aisle. I think he’s a good guy too. her family’s motives? dubious.

    • Claire says:

i’m not sure if he IS miserable and exhausted, though he does look that way. What i am sure of is it’s dubious if he can maintain a serious relationship considering his schedule for the next two years. I hope he waits…a long time.

  31. Veronica says:

    Unpopular hypothesis:
I think the version of BC we’d been seeing on the chat shows and conventions (the affable, self-deprecating, intellectual goofball) was a carefully polished and amplified facet of his personality. I think that it was a ploy deemed necessary to downplay the fact that he is “posh”. He did go to the fancy school, his parents are in peerage, he is privileged, and all of that stuff had to be downplayed to make him more palatable to a larger audience. Now that he’s doing more serious projects and his name is being tossed into Oscar contention, I think we’ll be seeing more of the “serious British actor” persona and that this engagement announcement was just the tip of the iceberg. What we see going forward will be more like who he truly is, and she is a sensible choice (similar educations, social standing, same group of friends, and same profession) for a proper English gentleman who wants “Sir” in front of his name at some point.

    • Lindy79 says:

I don’t think that will be unpopular at all Veronica.

(he may want to rethink Dr. Strange if he wants to be considered a serious thespian though. McKellan, Stewart, Hopkins can get away with comic book movies as they’ve put decades into their acting, at least 2-3 more than Cumbers and Fassbender, McAvoy aren’t “posh” and don’t want to be)

      • Veronica says:

I really doubt that he does Dr. Strange. I think that we will be lucky if there’s more Sherlock after the next season airs. He’s en route to being the next Olivier. I like him, so if he has a huge career with blockbusters or award winners or theatre it is all good with me.

      • Tara says:

My goodness, I just want the Dr. Strange casting announced! Lol.

I was convinced that he really really wanted the role (great pay and franchise and merchandise and he gets to be a superhero!) but now I’m thinking the same as you. He wants to be more ‘serious’ in his career. If he is Dr. Strange, I would bet it will be revealed when he’s in LA in a week or so, so he can be there when Marvel announces it.

      • Sandi says:

I don’t care about their backgrounds either. But Damian Lewis used to hide the fact he went to Eton for auditions, Veronica is right, it’s a thing.

Cumberbatch is actually a bit goofy, though, and hiding it won’t be easy. I did find some people’s confused reactions to him being silly on set when Freeman was more serious in the Sherlock outakes amusing.

Too soon to call for me; I’d have to see more going forward. Particularly wondering if Hunter was the one keen on ‘hiding’ it, as that would mean he’s been in a sort of vortex of frustration and added pressure for the last 5 months.

    • joe spider says:

Sorry but most audiences are only interested in whether a guy can act, not what his background is.

It p**s me off how the background of actors like Cumbie, Hiddles and Redmayne get dragged up at every interview in the UK press. They can all act.

      • veronica says:

I agree, they are all good actors. No disagreement there. But if the “posh” thing doesn’t matter, Jack Whitehall wouldn’t have tried to change his accent to sound more working class when he started, and articles like this wouldn’t be all over the place.

        http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2014/sep/16/david-morrissey-working-class-actors-priced-out

Morrissey is not the only actor who has said similar things.

      • joe spider says:

        @ Veronica

But is it the fault of the “posh” actors. What are they supposed to do – not act?

“and all of that stuff had to be downplayed to make him more palatable to a larger audience.”

Is the bit I was responding to. Most people I know don’t judge actors by where they went to school but certain papers in this country are flogging it to death. Take those three and a few more out and you will find that at least 90% of actors probably aren’t from posh background.

Acting isn’t the only profession where it helps to have money behind you (and I’m not denying it does) it’s the same if you want to be a doctor/barrister etc. these days with tuition fees as they are.

      • Veronica says:

I do not think it is their fault. I’m saying it is something that gets a lot of negative attention. Do I care that they are posh? No. Do other people? Apparently very many do, if so many actors (Cumby, Lewis, Whitehall, Dancy, et al) report it, whether it plays in their favor or not.

      • joe spider says:

Ok, but I think it is more the papers keep bringing it up rather than the average filmgoer/tv viewer.

But as we know, the papers always like to stir it.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@veronica, my understanding is that a good deal of the stuff the Guardian and people like Julie Waters and Judi Dench have been talking about, has to do with the government cutting funding for arts education so working class actors cannot get into the good acting schools, like RADA, because they cannot afford it. But somehow, it gets turned around to the posh actors get all the good placements, without anything to show that they actually supported what the government did.

    • Cee says:

      @Veronica.
Unpopular? No, I think you’ve hit the nail right in the head. I’ve said this before someplace else – we only get to see a small part of his personality, and the one he wants the public to see. Like anybody else willing to get married now a days, I wish them the best but, that’s it.

    • Me says:

Nope, Veronica. I don’t find your hypothesis to be unpopular. Just it’s probable veracity. I think BC will be the next Colin Firth, career wise. Although, CF seems more likable because he doesn’t hide his posh-ish-ness. Did you see his little interview at the GQ awards where BC made a tipsy acceptance speech? Ol’ Colin was a little toasty too, but such a gentleman. So freakin’ cute. Livia Firth seems like a real trophy though. Maybe it’s the Italian style. I don’t know. Lots of “upper class” British girls seem kind of horsey/frumpy. Sorry.

    • Claire says:

I’m sure he wants the ‘sir’, but I think he really is a goofball in real life. the evidence is all there from before he was famous. the serious stuff is more unlike him.

  32. allheavens says:

This probably won’t make the cut, but GOD some of you people need to revisit your comments and cringe because they are SOOOOOOOOO ridiculous.

    • Nic says:

Of course though, coming on here just to tell people they’re sooooooooo ridiculous isn’t a reason to cringe at all. Who are you to tell anyone what they should think or say about anything?

    • angela says:

allheavens, but it’s fun though. Yesterday’s thread was more epic than ten Viking funerals put together. It was the first time I was on a Cumby thread, and I’m not going to miss any from now on. The comments on Pajiba are both hilarious and sane, all self-awareness and wit and sniffles. Here, they’re hilarious in a stalkers-are-so-funny way. Some people hope they’re going to divorce or break the engagement. Nutters of the world, unite!

      • Nic says:

As sure as night follows day, there always appears the trolls to crow ‘omgs you all crazy stalkers’

Have you actually read any if the comments or are you bypassing that bit just for the sake of your hilar commentary. Why are people stalkers and why are people nutters? Nevermind though, as hanging around here reading said comments puts you on a much higher pedestal.

      • angela says:

And Pavlovian bingo! I’m gonna get off my pedestal now and go on 5-mile jog. If this post doesn’t have at least 350 comments it’s going to be anti-climactic.

      • Nic says:

Oh dear. The knobbery quota is overwhelming. If there’s anything worse than weird Internet comments it’s those who think they’ve mastered the art of snide at the weird Internet comments. It’s not as easy as it looks, folks. As illustrated here.

        Enjoy that jog.

      • sigh((s)) says:

Come on, this is way more fun than all these silly people who think she’s the greatest things since sliced bread and are creepily counting down to baby ‘batches.
The “step-ford I’m soooooo happy for people I don’t know crowd” scares me more than the ” I side eye this relationship of people I don’t know” crowd.

      • angela says:

Thanks, I’ll get going. If you’re talking about me, I agree, I’m a toddler when it comes to good snide, shade, and celeb snarky wit. There’s a few posters here that are really brilliant, me not so much. But I ain’t a ding dong either. See ya.

      • Sandi says:

Both extreme sides of the coin are weird.

    • Lilacflowers says:

@AllHeavens, would you care for a cup of tea or a glass of wine?

      • allheavens says:

        @Lilacflowers

I think I’ll have a cup of tea and I’ll sip very slowly while reading the responses but first I’ll have to search through the city to see if I can find two f$%ks to give.

        FOMCLMAO!

    • shenasty says:

I cracked open a bottle of wine to read through the comments. Some of y’all truly need Jesus.

      • Ally8 says:

Reveling in other people’s (however irrational) displeasure ain’t so Jesus-like either. And the bottle of wine thing is a little gluttonous. Judgement!

  33. Janet says:

My parents married less than six months after they met at a New Years Eve party, and they were very happy together for 35 years until my dad passed away.

  34. Kazlock 1307 says:

Thank God not everyone’s buying the ‘They’re so in love’ crap!
At best I see it as a shotgun engagement/wedding.Possibly a PR stunt, but I doubt it.
My guess is that they’ve settled for each other. No great romance just comparability.
If it’s anything other than love, then I hope they call it a day before children are involved.

    • MissMary says:

Word. I don’t see this as lasting but I’ve been called a bitch for saying that… but *shrug* It’s my opinion. Hope they find whatever they need for as long as they need it, be it a few months or decades.

      • lola says:

🙂 Don’t be mad but I’ll call you bitch if your theory about them going apart after oscars doesn’t work.
I have a theory that she is very hungry for his fame, social status and he doesn’t see it (or doesn’t care anymore) and her side did this very planned with leaks to the mags from the beginning. I mean look at the comment her family made. The only way they’d broke up is if it comes from him (not her), and maybe the engagement is going to last so long that he finally meets the right one (Sophie is not imho).

    • Renee says:

Hi Kazlock! *waves*. I’m with you, not a grand romance. Not sure what’s going on. It’s sad that he does seem to be settling.

    • Josa says:

Maybe the end game is children? Benedict wants some, doesn’t he? It’s better this way then go with the Hugh Grant route. Nothing wrong with settling, a lot of people do that.

      • MissMary says:

He’s said recently that kids are great but not necessarily rightnowthissecond so…who knows.

  35. sigh((s)) says:

I’m ever so slightly bothered at all of the “you guys are all horrible commenters and how dare you say things like that about people you do t know in real life”.
Have you people never been to the Clooney posts? The Kimye posts? The Anniston posts? It’s vitriol covered in acid there. And no one is chastising them for judging people based on hearsay.
About the worst thing I’ve read on here about this couple:
    1) she’s pretentious
    2) they look related
    3) they won’t make it to the altar/will divorce (every other couple on this site who announces their engagement I guarantee you has a few ‘I give it a year/2/3’ comments)
    4) he’s doing this for PR (because no one has ever speculated on that before with anyone)

Nobody here has said she’s an awful person who spreads disease and murders babies. It’s been a little snarky at times, but nothing like what I’ve read in other posts.
Get off your high horses. I’m sure we’ve all said some things on the interwebs that weren’t glowing with kittens and rainbows in a cloud of political correctness.

    • Nic says:

I love you sighs. Again I woulda posted that if I wasn’t a lazy arse.

      • sigh((s)) says:

Love you, too. I love all you guys. I really like this site. It’s a nice community, even when we get snarky with each other.

    • MissMary says:

This. I’ve seen some heavy snark but I’ve yet to see “omg I hope she dies a painful death” or anything horrible. Same snark you see on *any* celeb post here.

      • icerose says:

I hope she cheats on him with Johnny Lee Miller or Fassy so we can have 700 comment post about how awful she is up until he goes off with some twenty something bubble who gives him lots of babies and yawns whenever he gets pretentious and talks about Turing, Sherlock and Richard 111 and then runs off with a rock star. He then becomes the true artist living like a hermit on a Grrek island where he marries a non English speaking women who loves him for his voice and not what he says

      • MissMary says:

My SO’s pet theory: Soon after Oscars, he’ll turn up solo somewhere, or be spotted chatting up a “mystery *hair color here* ” and the announcement will be made that he and SH parted ways, wanted different things, too hard to maintain a relationship at this time, wish one another the best, still wonderful friends… And he goes on with his bad self and she goes and does her octopus dance.

      • Renee says:

MissMary. I like your SO’s theory but somehow I doubt it. I think he truly wants to be married and he will settle and marry her. He isn’t the cool guy I thought he was. In fact, I was very wrong about him. And as another poster said, he’s kind of a penis lol 😉

      • Tara says:

Call me crazy, but I think they will get married, and within the next 18 months. He seems like he really really wants to be married and has found a decent woman, so he’s ready!

I simply cannot see him going through all this just for a PR/Oscar stunt. (If it does turn out to be that, I will be sorely disappointed in him. As would his parents, I’d imagine. Faking an engagement for pr purposes? Wanda couldn’t possibly approve). The timing is a bit interesting, but perhaps he just wanted it out there before he starts the US TIG promos b/c she will be accompanying him. No more speculation about sgf and all that.

      • Nic says:

        @tara

Why would he give a shit about people speculating on a ‘sgf’? If he wants to date and have someone ‘accompanying him’ then just do it and don’t be an arse about it. Taking out a poncey newspaper space to announce an engagement just before a ton of promo and press comes his way is crazy. Why not wait at least until the film’s done with or next year after the oscar crap is over? This is bringing in the most frenzy possible and as I said before, those who said she didn’t travel in the car with him at the lff because he didn’t want to detract from the film, well this kind of blows that out of the water.

      • Cate says:

@Icerose – funniest comment of the day for me! LOL, I could just see this scenario play out in my mind’s eye. IF only this could happen, best story ever.

      • Tara says:

Nic- Maybe he doesn’t give a shit, idk. Maybe he wanted to announce it so she’d feel more ready to go out in public together. A fiancée is a lot different than a gf, it means a serious relationship. I can believe it’s her who has been wanting the separate thing. Perhaps she’ll ease into being seen with him now.

Maybe he didn’t want to announce it at all, but Tim and Wanda made him do it. Could be press got a hold of something and the Times announcement was how he/they wanted to reveal it. His family is traditional that way.

Whatever the reason, it’s announced. They are engaged and she’ll be his wife. (Please don’t say ‘we don’t know that yet’ I believe he is serious in his intent to marry her)

      • Nic says:

Why would he need to be engaged to go public in order to feel validated? A serious relationship is a serious relationship and it really doesn’t have much to do with anyone else. I don’t know where people have picked up this idea that she’s this shy and retiring precious snowflake from. I don’t get that from her at all.
I’m shy in RL and there’s no way on earth I’d have arrived at the LFF on my own in front of all those crowds if I was.

It’s all conjecture really and I don’t know if you’re talking generally or it was aimed at me, but I wasn’t about to say ‘we don’t know what yet’. I’m not really giving it any thought and who knows. Whatever he does he does but it’s be nice to see less weirdness whatever he chooses to do.

      • Me says:

Icerose, are you sure you’re writing about BC and not Colin Firth’s plot line in Love Actually? Haha.

      • Tara says:

Nic- not him, her. If she is the one that didn’t want to be seen together. Who knows, might make her feel more comfortable going places together with him as his fiancé. Should it matter? No, but like you said-the whole thing was weird.

I don’t think she’s a shy retiring flower, either, but you don’t have to be to be a little uncomfortable with a lot of media attention. LFF was the first real big event of his she attended, we’ll see what happens at the next one. She will have to get used to all the attention. And if she doesn’t and they continue to do things separately, well then I don’t even know how that’s going to work out for them.

      • Old Enough says:

I don’t know what Lilac Flowers is drinking but I want some.

      • Claire says:

I agree Nic, and plus if they both came out on the red carpet regularly and in the public eye it would have been a true test of their relationship, and THEN they could decide on getting engaged after that. That would have been wiser.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I am a rainbow made of multi colored kittens

  36. MissMary says:

I have a hard time believe a woman who has 1.) rolled on the floor with a fake pregnant stomach 2.) did that octopus video 3.) engaged in experimental theatre 4.) is SOphie Hunter has “eschewed publicity”. I think she likes to think she does to craft her public persona as “I only care about art” but I doubt she’d turn her nose up (heh) at publicity if it were offered to her.

    • Cate says:

The worst thing was the ‘singing’ she dabbled in. There’s even a live performance out there on YT. Things like that baffle me, as I always battled severe stage fright and found it scary to perform, but for all means kind of know that I at least can sing my way out of a paper bag. She was just up there ‘singing’ on stage, while audience members scrambled for paper napkins to stuff their ears with.* I always wonder if people like that have real friends, who’d kindly tell them they might not be cut out to sing live. But I guess all the American Idols auditions and the like prove my theory wrong. I wish I had that kind of confidence…not even kidding.

(*I might have made this bit up)

    • Sandi says:

No, MissMary, but I can see her staying away from his level of exposure when there was a chance she was going to end up alone. You know, quietly disappear versus humiliation/speculation on why they split up.

I don’t hold #2 against her because she got paid for it.

      • Moodgirl says:

        @sandi:

Don’t we all take that chance when we date someone – we realize it may notwork out? IMHO she used that ” I don’t want to show up in public with you until you make it worth my while” to manipulate him. She most likely knew what he wanted so she worked her angle. This may explain his unhappy and frustrated demeanor.

      • Tara says:

But, Moodgirl, do you think he’d really want to be with a woman who was like that? I don’t. I can’t see him wanting to be married so much that he stays with a manipulative woman.

And I agree, Sandi- I think she wanted to stay out of the spotlight, for the most part, until she knew it was very serious. I can understand that b/c I’d be the same way.

  37. Intro Outro says:

700+ comments yesterday and 200 comments today… Ehhh…. *looks at 34 empty popcorn buckets and turns a delicate shade of green*

  38. Josa says:

The world is still turning today? Good. I had thought yesterday was the end of it.

  39. Isabelle says:

My parents were engaged after 2 weeks, married 2 months later. Happily married very much in love 30+ Years later. Know people that dated for years & to only divorce shortly afterwards. My dad said he knew, & if men ‘know’ this is the person they want to marry, they can be decisive early in the relationship.

  40. A. Key says:

This is still entertaining, OMG <3

  41. Me says:

    Two things:

    1) I’m not sure about everyone, but I want to be clear that I don’t think people are necessarily “posh bashing” Sophie for coming from a moneyed family. I think the feels just aren’t well articulated. Like, how many of us would pass up the chance to never worry about a bill and just live our passion “because,” even if we sucked at it? I certainly wouldn’t.

What rubs me the wrong way is, from what little we know, she seems to try to politely down play her background by saying, “Oh, my dad was just an insurance guy and my mom was a secretary.” That’s not really the entire truth. He wasn’t selling insurance door to door and mama’s family really does have money. I mean, playing cards for a living is something only people with money can do.

There’s no need to brag. It would just be nice for her to own it a little bit and acknowledge how ridiculously lucky she is. Maybe do a little volunteer work (like BC used to – at least, he still does charity). Make a point to do something practical and positive for the world even though you don’t have to. I thumb my nose at that “sharing a house” thing. Young trustafarians love living La Vie Boheme. They think it gives them cred. They don’t need to do it.

Her comments in articles thus far appear to reveal a woman living in an incredibly insular world – far removed from the maddening crowd. With no desire to ever join or endeavor to try to understand it. Yes, Sophie’s resume is good. But her paper accomplishments don’t really seem to have translated to real life and they aren’t that diverse. She’s “posh” well-rounded. Does she do needle point too?

    Amal wins 5evah.

    2) Sophie ain’t pregnant. BC isn’t “settling.” The thing that is “off” about all of this is that BC has finally revealed himself. Turns out he really is just a common ol’ posh wanker. I completely believe that they could fall for each other that quickly. But his choice in her shows that he appreciates “breeding” more than the down to earth, funny, conscious and well-rounded woman he used to describe. That’s disappointing. Plus, his knob headed way of handling the public aspect of it reeked. Remember at LFF, his smug smile when he said he was sooooooo good at keeping secrets? Not…. Karon almost lost her poker face.

I’m sure he did not take her advice on how to deal. He really thought this was the best way to get peace and privacy? All it’s gotten is more attention than they probably ever wanted. 50% of it negative. I can’t deny his talents or his attractiveness. But I’ve lost a lot of respect for him.

It’s too bad because I could probably still crush on him if he weren’t such a penis, but he’ll still get my $12 at the end of this month.

    • Nic says:

“It’s too bad because I could probably still crush on him if he weren’t such a penis”

I’ve been loling at this for a good twenty minutes now.

      • Lizzy says:

That comment is pure gold! From now on I will resort to call guys who offend me a penis! God, I am still giggle snorting over the penis comment!

      • Me says:

Glad there’s some laughter here. I mean, actual penises = good (imho). Human beings masquerading as penises? Not so much.

I will be thoroughly disgusted if she shows up to the altar wearing some horns get up, like that Fornieles chick. Watch their first dance be to Sigur Ros or some other “dying cat” sounding song. (Sorry, Sigur Ros fans.).

      • Tara says:

Ah Sigur Ros has some beautiful music. But they have some weird as heck music also. Lol.

I think this wedding is going to be completely traditional, with Wanda at the helm making sure of it. 🙂

    • J says:

the whole thing me confused. like how would we know what she did for charity?

      • Me says:

“We” don’t know if/every thing she’s done for charity. From what little we do know, she is not involved in charity or volunteering. If you google the average nobody who is regularly involved with volunteering and charity, stuff tends to come up for that aspect of his/her life.

Not to be involved in that stuff doesn’t mean a person is worthless or a Nazi. It’s just one more thing she doesn’t have in common with BC.

    • HBIC says:

I disagree. I think he is settling. Who knows if Sophie is pregnant or not.

I can agree with you on him being poshy, though. That’s pretty clear. Perhaps he spent waaay too much time with Lady K earlier this year and her royal crap really rubbed off on him.

And besides… he was with Olivia waaaay too long for him to go the poshy route b/c he’s always been that way. I’m not buying that theory. If he wanted to date in that crowd, he’d have done it a long time ago.

But I also think that he got tired of looking. I honestly think he wanted to find the right girl… but he just threw his hands up in the air.

Don’t forget… Cumby did NOT have a SO before his fame exploded like a lot of other celebrities did (he was with Olivia for like, less than a year after Sherlock premiered). He’s currently attracting all of the wrong type of people, b/c everyone knows that celebrities mostly attract gold diggers and crazies. They very rarely find the right people. Matt Damon got lucky. Cumby hasn’t been too lucky, seems like. He picked out someone who he knew and trusted so he wouldn’t have to deal with wasting time with a woman who was going to leech off of him for his fame or for his money (although… who truly knows what Sophie’s end game really is…).

Also… I think his funny, down-to-earth personality and demeanor TRULY is him, but he’s in the WRONG relationship. And that can change a person. I think she has more of a negative influence on him than we all realize. And it’s changed him… for the worst.

I hope he finds his Valentine and kicks Sylvia to the curb one day, though (Parade’s End reference, lol). I think he’s suffering without her.

      • sigh((s)) says:

Eh. I think he’s showing his true colors. I think he has a rather large public school boy chip on his shoulder, and now has enough fame to get in good with the right set.
        That is my cynical view.

      • blended says:

i think the down to earth persona WAS him, but not what he is now. fame changed him. it made him more insular, which is ironic considering he travels more and meets more types of people than ever before. he gravitated towards the snotty crowd because he got a tasted of the rarified air. this is natural, i guess, for someone in his position, but boy is it ever disappointing.
i’m gonna bet that stories are gonna come out of him snubbing fans, and generally being petulant. just my hunch.

      • Me says:

I hate to say this because I wouldn’t want anyone to settle but I kind of wish you were right. Just because that would mean that his entire public persona was not a complete and total show.

That’s the disappointing thing. Of course, we’d never really “know him.” But he seemed less fake than the others. And his schtick was the down-to-earth, romantic guy who valued all sorts of people. But his choice in Sophie shows he has all the same vapid aristo/upper-middle class values he claimed he didn’t care for.

Not that there’s anything “wrong” with Sophie. It’s just that she doesn’t fit what he described. Kudos to all the kids who didn’t believe in Santa Claus and realized that BC would not actually choose the girl he was describing. In the end, Sophie is a fine choice for an upper class guy who wants an appropriate trophy to breed with. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

He just swore up and down that was not him. I liked and believed how he kept saying he cared more about a smart, down-to-earth girl with a great sense of humor. Wherever she would have been from.

      • Moodgirl says:

        @HBIC:

I am in your camp. I think his “personal goals” that he mentioned earlier in the year included a wife and kids. He sounded almost desperate or on a mission, like me when I was in college.

Sophie was in the right place at the right time but it may go bad fast. Obviously we don’t know him but I have a hard time believing that he loves her for her. If I dated a man and he made the demands that I think she made about not being seen in public with me AND I had to put up with the circus that ensued I would dump him so fast I would be arrested for speeding.

With that, I still think he is a pompous ***HOLE.

      • GeeMoney says:

        @Moodgirl
I hear what you are saying. I think deep down inside he’s not an a-hole, but that something is going on with him to behave this way. He’s done a 180 in the last several months. He was never like that before… and then this? Something has to be bothering him.

Maybe he is working too much. Maybe it’s Sophie. Maybe it’s his age and desire to have kids. Maybe it’s pressure from his parents to have kids. I think all of this stuff is running together, and he’s cracking under the pressure.

What he needs to do is take a break from the madness, calm down and rethink everything. Or meet someone who truly loves him, so that they can get him back on the horse and help him get some perspective.

        @Me
I do think who he described as his ideal mate was true. I just think he’s making a fear based decision and plunging into a relationship b/c he wants the fairy tale so bad. I wish he’d just wake up and realize that the right person will eventually appear when the time is right. No need to rush into a relationship b/c you are being impatient.

      • Claire says:

Yeah all of what you said. I really really hope they don’t make it down the altar and finds a kick ass awesome lady. Don’t care what she does as long as she’s a fun smart gal.

having said that, what the hell happened at the end of PE? Did he kick her out and leave Sylvia? Or not? Cause that was unclear!

      • Claire says:

Love your comment GeeMoney. From your lips to God’s ears. Here’s to him finding his Valentine and kicking Sylvia’s ass to the curb

      • An says:

-GeeMoney: Yes, I thought he was cracking for awhile too. He looks like it. I don’t how else to put it.

      • Grace says:

        @ Claire

Tietjens did leave his wife and live with Valentine in the last part of Parade’s End (the book) but BBC only dramatised three parts of the book instead of the full four. I imagine they wanted the series to end on a high note at right after the end of the Great War. The final part had an air of bleakness. Even though Valentine got her man but life was hard since they had no money. The ending of the book was rather ambiguous too, but you can see that she was being driven close to hysteria. So I guess there is no fairytale everywhere.

BTW, I don’t know if anyone is up for a discussion, I’ve seen a few interviews following Parade’s End and always thought that Benedict wasn’t that into Valentine’s character (he always seemed more eager to talk about Rebacca Hall’s…) Perhaps he and Rebacca got on better, I don’t know. But I had the distinctive feeling after watching the interviews that bluestockings were not exactly his set.

      • Me says:

GeeMoney, I hope you are right and BC does “wake up.” But I guess I’m a pessimist?

At one point, I was more optimistic that BC meant all of what he was saying because he was describing someone like OP. (And I’m not one of those that can’t let that relationship rest in peace. IJS.) OP was someone who was more middle class, down to earth, funny, smart. But it wasn’t like she was some sort of plebe who wouldn’t be able to relate to some of BC’s upbringing at all. She grew up in Putney, went to a pretty good independent school and one of her parents is a judge. If coming from a similar background carries that much weight, someone from that kind of background seems better suited. She can easily rub elbows, but also let her hair down.

Sophie comes from the kind of background that has an ancestral home or something, y’know? She also seems like a door mat in some ways.

But, if all the cloak and dagger was her idea, I think it was a bad idea for BC to go along as long as he has. Like, at first, it could be a good way to nurture your relationship. It could be refreshing to hear a girl say she wants none of the lime light. But, then, it’s kind of like “If you’re gonna be with me, then you’re get over yourself, honey.”

Let’s say they really “just knew” because they are mature and old friends… What do they know about functioning as a couple out in the real world, if she hasn’t learned how to face a camera yet? Or better yet, how will he really know her deal until he sees her in action? In real life? Not this bubble they’ve created for themselves.

This popped up on my Facebook feed tonight. • MountainRunner says:

      *Me*

You helped to shed light on one of my questions, which was why her family was considered to be moneyed. I asked it above, since they sounded middle class.

I wasn’t surprised he went with someone like Sophie, but I see where he built an image that had people thinking he was more down-to-earth than he really is and that has been disappointing to many. Some of his interviews of the past few months have shown some of the cracks in his persona and he’s not getting as much love from the fans as a result.

      • Sandi says:

Except Sophie’s the same ‘set’ as him. Upper middle class.

I don’t know what her dad proves though. He ditched the fam and his good job when she was 13. That likely dented their finances, since her parents divorced. Sounds like a midlife crisis.

      • Nic says:

Man, it’s such a shame that human beings are still dividing themselves up into sets and classes. We’re all the same, we all poop, we all can be dicks or be diamonds. Being rich doesn’t make you any less or more of either.

      • Me says:

I don’t think the majority of that “set” consciously decides they are better than others. Maybe it’s subconscious? Because they’re quite polite to your face. Would even be “friendly” with you when not surrounded by their peers (no pun intended). But, woe unto you, when the rest of the club shows up and you don’t have the right pedigree. It’s kind of “Breakfast Club.” LOL.

The interesting thing about BC’s “class” is that he straddled for so long. And I think that affected him. Had Tim done something else besides acting and married one of his set, BC (theoretically) would have been just like a Tertius or Jesse, etc. But Tim followed his heart – became an actor and married Wanda, a truly middle class girl.

They were never starving, but def didn’t have the money of his classmates. His parents were kinda famous. So, that gave him some clout – but only as much as “stage people” will get in those kind of circles. His name also got a bit of respect because everyone remembered that Tim was, at least once, one of them.

This put BC square in the middle. Too posh for the normals. And not posh enough for the “set.” Personally, I think he always looked good. But he was definitely more goofy-cute back in the day. Those horsey girls never looked at him twice. Once he found Olivia, I think that didn’t matter anymore. But once fame came a knocking and he grew into his paws, so to speak, his opportunities with the “girls who wouldn’t talk to him in high school” opened up. I mean, he’s freaking hot now, regardless of his success.

Trust me, it’s a thing. Guys often make comments to me about how I look like the girl that never gave them the time of day. (Major compliment, I guess. I sure don’t see it). Maybe, those masculine desires to conquer were awakened. Sophie is the female “Tim, nice but dim” he never had a chance with before.

      • sigh((s)) says:

Me-THIS. This is the long version of what I’ve been saying for months. Too posh for the plebs, not posh enough for the elite set. Works hard, puts in his dues, has a normal girlfriend that he seems happy with. Then gets some fame, realizes that he can hob knob and truly be part of the set. He takes it and runs with it.

And I called him ending up with this kind of chick. I actually think he’s been wife shopping for a couple years now. I was hoping against hope that he would prove me wrong.

      • blended says:

i definitely think he scoped out some of the posh ladies in his circle as potential wives (kinvara, charlotte asprey, maybe viki). i think sophie was the only one willing to play the game. it’s kind of a shame because i think there would have been so much potential if he looked outside of his ‘set.’ someone with a zest for life, social awareness, adventurous spirit just like him (or should i say the old him). i honestly don’t think sophie is a ‘dance like nobody’s watching’ kind of girl.

      • Me says:

Yep, sigh((s)). I’m working on brevity. LOL.

Blended, you win the night. But apparently, she does sing like no one’s listening? Oh, wait – they weren’t. Ha!

      • Tara says:

Did Tim go to Harrow or a school like that? Was he officially one of the ‘posh’ kids? And then kind of gave it up to act?

I’ve always thought his dad looked like a real nice guy 🙂

      • Me says:

Glad I helped, MountainRunner. I wish I could be more candid, using anecdotes, but I like anonymity. 😉

Yes, Tara 🙂 Tim is an old Harrovian. But back in his early acting days, I think you’d really not talk about it. He came up with Michael Caine and Anthony Hopkins, etc. Good blokes. Tim’s aura is sweet, right? Wanda looks like a firecracker <3 Hope she's not a dragon-mother-in-law.

In one of those flower show clips, I was kind of pleasantly surprised when BC seemed to firmly, but respectfully shut her down about her "romantic" terrace landscaping ideas.

      • Nic says:

“But apparently, she does sing like no one’s listening? Oh, wait – they weren’t. Ha!”

I’m sorry, but I pretty much just fell off my chair…

        😀

    • Lilacflowers says:

“if he weren’t such a penis.” I cannot un-see that!

  42. Moodgirl says:

    @missmary

Sorry, I may not wish a painful death but a slight case of food poisoning would be great! Just joking. NOT.

  43. Someonestolemyname says:

I don’t follow Cumberbatch, I had NO idea he was soooooooo Popular! Wow!

  44. Elle says:

You know what would be great? If Hiddleston also announced an engagement this week. Celebitchy might implode.

I have no idea if this is real or Oscar bait or what, but good for them. They seem like a good match in terms of age and profession, and it makes him seem much more secure and grounded than some 20-year-old “model” (other single actors should take note). I’ll be interested to see if they actually make it down the aisle or if this is one of those perms-engagements that a lot of Hollywood stars seem to have these days.

    • joe spider says:

If Hiddles announced an engagement this week half the fan girls would shout copycat!

      • icerose says:

And those that don’t would know he has finally morphed into Loki and is sitting in Shreveport disguised as Hank Williams with a beautifully young actress on his arm smiling enigmatically.

      • joe spider says:

Loki pretending to be Odin disguised as Hank Williams?

        My head hurts. 🙂

      • Josa says:

They will call him copycat anyway when he announces his engagement, whenever that will be.

      • joe spider says:

Which is daft considering the majority of people end up engaged and married.

Has anyone called Ben a copycat yet because Eddie got there first?

      • Josa says:

@Joe Spider. “Has anyone called Ben a copycat yet because Eddie got there first?” I was wondering about that. Incidentally, the percentage of actors announcing their engagement in the year when they are seeking an Oscar are abnormally high.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Hiddles married me two weeks ago. Ssshh!

      • sigh((s)) says:

Well, at least we know he picked a good one. Congrats to you both!

      • Dara says:

Don’t get greedy! You already have one secret husband, you don’t need two. Or, if for whatever reason, you tire of either – then send one of ’em my way (don’t much care which one shows up at my door, both have their appeal). It will be a sacrifice to be sure, but I’m feeling generous today.

  45. Pinky says:

I know that there are people where short engagements worked… but guys keep in mind that Ben was hardly at home.

Theres a difference if somebody is dating for five months and seeing each other every single day of that, or if the hubby is away for most of the time. He was all over the place this summer. And shooting RIII ever since then.
How is that enough time to get to know someone enough to get married?
Call me unromantic but thats not exactly smart.

    • HBIC says:

      THIS.

Part of me thinks this relationship is part (or little to none) romance, part business. Yipes.

    • lindy79 says:

      Fair point.
She may have been with him and doing the “dont look at meeeee” thing. Who knows..

      • MissMary says:

His “plus ones” are so scrutinized, she’d have been spotted with him before April if they were a “thing”. And even after April, it was mystery blondes and definitely not SH brunettes…so hmmm. Maybe she owns a lot of wigs. And body shaping suits.

      • lindy79 says:

Yeah i know. I was just trying to be devils advocate for once lol

      • Pinky says:

Weren’t there at least 3 or 4 stories circulating where he told people that he was single? Just recently?
And let’s not even talk about all the mystery women.. Sophie must be a very very… tolerant woman.

      • blended says:

this is why i’m baffled that people are buying this. they have NOT been together for 5 months. he has been seen with other people in that span of time, plus travelling solo all over for various projects, cons, press. there is just no way they had time to cultivate a proper relationship.

      • Claire says:

I agree with all you lovely ladies above. So what to make of it then? PR for the Oscars? Arrangement? Pressure from Wanda? Or something else? Because I’d like to know, would even prefer, it’s something other than my favourite actor going down the aisle under the most misguided circumstances.

      • Pinky says:

        I am guessing..

Either she’s pregnant.. And pressurised him into making it proper by proposing..

Or I don’t know.. I really dislike the thought of him doing this for a campaign but the timing is simply so weird..

Also think back at the Elle interview – that was just 2 months ago (they did that in August).. And he was all “one day I want to look back.. And see that moment where I realized my life is not all about myself.” And “I think you have to enjoy the new found currency.” … And two months later he’s engaged?
I definitely smell something being foul there..

      • missLouLou says:

Not just all the solo travelling before the engagement, but who gets engaged and then travels OS for 2 weeks or more? Is she with him? Will we finally see some red carpet PDA? Or, like she has said before, will she eschew the whole showing up on a red carpet with someone ‘much more famous than you’ because ‘isn’t that what odious people do’?

      • Dakota M. says:

        Fair point.
She may have been with him and doing the “dont look at meeeee” thing. Who knows..

@lindy79 If she’d been there doing the “don’t look at meeee” thing then we wouldn’t have been able to miss her…

  46. sigh((s)) says:

I have a really stupid question. What the heck is 5evah? Is this supposed to be forever +1?
    I’m so old.

  47. Lizzy says:

I read this on tumblr and I was agreeing to it rather fast:
“he will marry a common rich girl (a trustafarian at that), raise public school rich kids, and be a snob to the commoners.”

This just proves again that those romantic tales of poor girl meets rich guy and they are happily ever after are complete poop! Show me who your friends are and all that. A woman he described “down to earth, educated, smart, career etc etc”, she would rip him and his public school boy attitude a new one. Two people, each from one end of a spectrum will have a hard time connecting because of the different backgrounds and experiences.

Therefore, my conclusion. The trustafarian makes perfect sense. She shares the same values, has the same attitude and will think it no wrong to pay money for education, therefore buying others out and maintaining a society that excludes the ones without the necessary cash. Match made in heaven no?

    • Andrea says:

Honestly, I grew up wealthier than most of my peers( private school, only child etc) and I have always dated poor men, mostly because I found at least in the US rich or poor, a lot of people do not have the commonsense about saving for a rainy day and spend spend even when they shouldn’t(they have the nouveau riche approach to life, whereas, I am more old money, save for that rainy day type). I like to date someone who is a saver like myself(I have found poor men who don’t feel the world owes them everything are the best fit for me) and I don’t see what is wrong with dating someone with whom you agree with on basic things such as how to spend one’s money. I am shocked at how many people never discuss such matters prior to marriage.

    • Pinky says:

but there’s also a middle ground. Doesn’t have to be two ends of the spectrum.

I actually “expected” him to find a nice woman who’s NOT in the business. Or if she is then at least successfully… and maybe backstage.

  48. scout says:

Oxford? In her 30s? Speaks French? Together only for few months? Ah…. Amal #2!! No, I can’t take it anymore!!! Wedding ceremony (by boatloads) on Thames? OH NO!!!
At least he is young enough unlike the “other” one. Good luck to them.

    • Nic says:

Don’t give oxford too much credit, as I said earlier in the thread, I’ve known several oxford grads and they’re kind of awful and really not v intelligent. Also, I’m guessing she went to a school where your chances of going to Oxbridge are greatly increased.

      • sigh((s)) says:

I know a few oxford and Cambridge people and they are fabulously intelligent but not in an overbearing way. They are also very sweet and not at all pretentious. I also don’t believe they came from an entitled background, which probably makes all the difference.

      • Nic says:

Yeah, for sure. There shouldn’t be any sweeping judgements, I know some really cool Oxbridge grads too but I think people sometimes assume that super intelligence comes with attending there and it reeally doesn’t 😉

      • Claire says:

What you say is true Nic. there are plenty of very bright people at those schools, but someone of average or mildly above average intelligence can go there if they have the right connections and/or they work hard. also, it’s not like Sophie studied law or PPE at Oxford; she studied two foreign languages, which even idiots can learn without a degree lol.

    • Me says:

      Don’t insult my Amal! LOL.

Amal speaks English, French AND Arabic. She graduated from Oxford AND NYU – one of the best law schools in America. She clerked for a (then future) SCOTUS Justice (not an easy job to get). She is a barrister at a very prestigious law firm. She’s had very high profile clients. Her work (human rights and international law) is actually really serious and meaningful (in an urgent, practical way. Not saying art isn’t meaningful). It’s also not the kind of work where someone can skate by on connections and subjective reviews. Law doesn’t eff around. She appears to come from money but didn’t have to rely on family connections for her opportunities.

Let’s not forget. Floral jeans aside, her style sense has been on sickening point. Her hair is fabulous. (No sad, teased out “lobs” for Amal. Sorry, Sophie.) She’s seems confident and smiles! And it doesn’t look like it’s because she wants to be a movie star. She genuinely just looks happy to be in love and screw the haters. She’ll face them head on without hiding. Clooney also treated her way different than all the others from day 1. He hid it at first, but not for very long. And then there was no doubt that she was different.

Good luck to Sophie. But we have seen Amal Alamuddin Clooney. And she is no Alamuddin-Clooney.

  49. Deb says:

I think they make a really cute couple. My friend says she thinks they will make lovely “cucumbers”! lol (Cumberbabies)
Sophie reminds me of a younger, aristocratic, British version of Kristy McNichol.

    • Nic says:

      Sophie’s not an aristocrat.

They don’t seem cute together to me, but each to their own.

    • MissMary says:

Kristy McNichol had a bad turn of things and now does hair in so. Cal, last I heard. So I hope SH doesn’t have the same issues KM had…

      • Deb says:

MissMary: Yeah, hopefully not. I just meant she reminded me of her physically. I kept looking at Sophie and thinking she reminded me of someone and then I realized it was Kristy McNichol.

  50. Margret says:

When he hits the American talk shows to promote TIG which should be next week, we’re going to hear “so, Benedict, we hear congratulations are in order” . What will he say, what will be his demeanor, attitude, will he say yes thank you and move on to another subject or lay it out for the masses? Should be telling.

    • Nic says:

That’s one of the things I find so odd. I’ve said it on here, but why open himself up to all the questions about it knowing he’s got a gauntlet of talk shows and interviews to do?

      • MissMary says:

People have speculated everything from “it makes him look like leading man, stable material” ro “there’s some nasty gossip out there and he’s looking to head it off by setting up a nice and ‘normal’ image… It’s also been speculated he wanted to diminish his “crazy fan base” image by coming across as nice, settled, and “golly gee”.

Personally, I think it’s bad PR timing, no matter if the engagement itself is PR or not.

    • Renee says:

Maybe they’ll be told no personal questions? Or he’ll have some carefully concocted romantic story, you know, for the fans.

    • gg says:

He’s going to be on Kelly and Michael, or Michael and Kelly, or whatever “Regis and Kathie Lee” is called these days. You know *they* are gonna bring it up.

      • Encumbered says:

That show is a piece of shit. Just have to say.

      • sigh((s)) says:

        Kelly gets on my.last.nerve.

      • MissMary says:

Ugh that show is awful. All fluff. Not even good fluff. Just… fluff fluff. Softball questions, absolute fawning, and a lot of “Oh ha ha ha I got your name wrong/movie wrong/info wrong, aren’t we silly!”

    • Tara says:

Margaret- I’ve wondered about that too. I hope he gets really happy and seems wonderfully excited about it. Bouncing in his seat happy. To avoid it altogether would certainly be odd, at this point, b/c it’s been publically announced.

gg- do you know what day? That one I’ll watch.

    • Moodgirl says:

My posts are not posting. I just saw a commercial for the Hollywood Film Awards. The show is scheduled to air November 14th on CBS. BC is featured in the commercial but that doesn’t meam anything. I WILL BE GLUED TO THE SCREEN.

    • Moodgirl says:

My posts are not posting. I just saw a commercial for the Hollywood Film Awards. The show is scheduled to air November 14th on CBS. BC is featured in the commercial but that doesn’t meam anything. I WILL BE GLUED TO THE SCREEN, TRUST ME.

  51. jammypants says:

So…The Imitation Game! coming soon to our silver screens. I’ll prepare tissues in case it’s a tearjerker.

  52. Kazlock 1307 says:

What I find strange is the shortness of their dating. The way they carried out their dating, seen at FO quite openly.ThThen months of ‘are they, aren’t they?’ crap!!

And why announce the engagement before TIG release? Why not waitba few weeks?

    • Claire says:

Do you agree with me this is just a really bad idea on his part and one he’ll likely regret? Yes it’s part jealousy yes it’s part I wish he’d wait a few more years and make a wiser decision, but I don’t think I’m mostly projecting here to say this is something he’ll likely come to regret.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

        Claire
Totally.Don’t see this as anything other than a convenient marriage for both of them.
If that’s what they want, then I hope it makes them happy.
Still think she’s a pretentious prig.Only now I’m beginning to think he may be too!

    • Renee says:

Actually I find everything about them to be strange, the quick dating (if that’s what you want to call what they did), the sudden engagement. It all seems forced and manufactured. Maybe he just decided to settle for her because she fit the boxes. His behavior is so different from his past behavior that I’ll just side-eye everything he says. They just have a ick factor about them, IMO. But I don’t really like things that feel inauthentic and disingenuous. Which is what this feels like to me.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

        Renee
I wish I’d put it that way!
Well said. And IMO you’ve hit the nail on the head.

      • MissMary says:

Renee: WORD. More power to ’em if this works and this is what they want but it gives me an oogie feeling that has nothing to do with being a crazed fan and everything to do with being an adult human who has seen a variety of relationships up close and from afar… this one falls into the “weird” camp.

      • Renee says:

Kazlock, maybe I’d feel differently if their behavior had been a bit less odd, for lack of a better word. I suppose she could be pregnant, which would explain the rush but who knows? Total speculation. His behavior is the strange thing–leaving your gf in a car, going to parties w/out her, all the nonsense. Just lots of wtfery for me. Too much silliness for me. I mean, I hope he’s happy. I think hes a great actor but he seems to have changed and not for the better.

    • MissLouLou says:

This is what I like most about this site. You can post what you really think and yes, people will disagree, but they wont (in most cases), jump all over you and threaten you if you show how much this whole secret dating/fast engagement thing icks you out. I was always on the opinion that BC wouldn’t be stupid enough to announce something as major as an engagement so close to a film opening (especially one that could garner an Oscar nod). Obviously I was wrong. At the most I expected a Gf reveal, not a fiancee. Is he really that thirsty for an Oscar? And the whole ‘they’ve been together 5 mths but it only got serious late summer’ thing just makes me squint. Really? You know all the little foibles of each other after so little time? You know how much BC works and how often he’ll be away from home in the next couple of years? You know how into Hamlet he’s going to get (the man saw a psychiatrist to shake off a movie character for gods sake). The whole relationship to me just seems off. If she is dictating terms to him, then she’s a manipulative shrew. If he’s just thrown his hands up and said ‘stuff it, she’ll do’ then I feel truly sorry for him.

Google his name – all you see now are articles on his engagement. Nothing at all about his upcoming movies. Just hundreds of articles on his engagement. Surely from a PR view that cant be a good thing for TIG?

*sigh* I just don’t know. If it lasts, then good on them. But I hold doubts as to the strength of a relationship of less than 6 months. As my brother said, if he had married one of his GFs after the first 5 mths, he would have lived to regret it. I just hope That doesn’t happen to Bc.

      • Me says:

Eh, we’ll see. I would have picked someone else for him. But, since it’s his life, he gets to do the picking.

That said, I agree that the quick courtship/marriages that seem to last always appear to be when people know it’s so right, so quickly that they are spending crazy amounts of time together. Like attached at the hip, “we have so much catching up to do.” It can be passionate or as natural as never being able to imagine when things were different. But, even though we don’t know about all of their moments, I did not get the impression from his calendar this summer that they did have all that kind of time together. Even if the rumors that she moved in with him already are true. They became friends during Burlesque Fairytales, but how good of friends? There are “old buddy” friends and friends-friends.

On the other hand, my god parents met when my god father got into a car accident where his first wife was killed and he almost died. My god mother was the nurse who brought him back to health. Three months after that initial meeting, she took him and his two orphaned kids on. They’ve been happily married for almost 40 years.

I love Rumi. He said, “The minute I heard my first love story, I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere.
They’re in each other all along.”

  53. lindy79 says:

I’m going to throw this out there based on the assumption he’s marrying so they can have children.
what if she or he can’t? Its the kind of thing you don’t know until you start trying.
I realise there are options but just all the “oooh bet they have gorgeous cumberbabies!” stuff I’ve seen elsewhere just got me thinking.

    • Pinky says:

Well she could already be preggers..

But I definitely see your point. Now I imagine some sort of Henry the VIII scenario…

  54. Miss Melissa says:

True story – make of it what you will:

My dad married his friend and colleague of many years after two serious relationships, one for more than a decade, and one for a few years.

He married the friend because he thought it was a wise choice. She was “nice”, he was tired of looking. She looked good on paper – independent, successful, worked in his industry and thus understood him. She wanted to have children and he wanted to rebuild a family life and have more kids. He was in his late 40s.

She married him because it was time, he looked good on paper, and she was in her late 30s.

They got engaged after a few months of dating and rushed into a wedding. It was stressful, so they delayed the wedding by a few months because it moved so fast. Nevertheless, they had my youngest sister 9 months after the wedding. She loves my sister, but found the realities of pregnancy and child-rearing to be tough. She decided she didn’t want another.

They have been married for more than 20 years.

    They are miserable.

He thought she’d grow to love him. She grew to resent him because of all of those tough things that make marriage – well, marriage. The stuff you need to actual love and commitment to endure. Recessions, business challenges, health problems, parenting issues… real life happens. She was committed to being a married person, but not to him. But she’ll never get out.

He feels she resents him because he was not “as advertised.” He feels unloved. She is fine being someone’s wife and following her career and being his roommate. He wants passion and love and he wants that with her. She doesn’t feel the need to feel anything deeply. They are still in the same industry, but she constantly one-ups him and dismisses his business, as he is self-employed, but she works for a big corporation.

On paper, they look great together. In reality, they are all wrong. They are not bad people. They just are wrong for each other. And they didn’t go into it for the right reasons.

They were friends for over a decade. But that means nothing. Because you don’t get to know people as they truly are until you try to live with them. It’s not a fairy tale, it’s hard work. And that is where the love comes in. Because that it what you have to hold on to get through the tough times, the mediocre times, the real life moments and the dailiness of living with a partner. You don’t ever know them enough.

Being friends is not being intimate. It’s different. And friendships aren’t always deep or meaningful. The love and commitment have to be there from the start if you have a chance of succeeding and getting to the good stuff. And you just don’t know who you are dealing with after a few months of dating, or being friends for years. You don’t know until you are there. And sometimes, it is just dumb luck that you found the person who is willing to dig with you for the long haul.

People hide who they really are from the closest of friends.

This… all this… If I could insert a gif I would insert one of me standing up and clapping.

Sadly I fear thats exactly what he’s trying to do too.

    • lindy79 says:

Well for every example like yours there is one where it worked out so who knows?
I don’t think longevity = a greater chance of success nor does it mean getting married quickly = success.
      Time will tell.

    • Me says:

      + Trillions

Miss Melissa, I have always thought that, when the really tough/boring sh!t comes around, you better be able to look over at your partner and remember why it’s worth it and what it really can be like.

Maybe BC and Sophie will be fine. We certainly don’t know the intimate details of their situation. But I just wanted to agree with your sentiments. Choosing someone who looks like a good practical choice is so tempting because you already know you’re friends and that you might have a family. But is it worth it, if marriage is that much harder when you’re not in love? Are your kids going to have a happy childhood if you’re miserable. True. Lots of love matches don’t work because there’s passion and no compatibility. But there’s got to be a balance.

    • Maria says:

Interestingly, Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory seem to have started off as platonic co-workers and then privately started seeing each other after they did a play together.
      Similar dynamic?

  55. Megan says:

Am I the only one who thinks it is weird that only one friend sent out a congrats? Just one?

Also, it throws the Elle comment about him making plans into perspective.

    • Pinky says:

No. It IS more than weird.

Actually Adam ackland retweeted something about it – and deleted it within 5 min. Same for Amanda abbington.

The other usual suspects (Pegg for example) are strangely quiet.

Which doesn’t really help to make this seem more normal.

      • sigh((s)) says:

I didn’t see AA’s. I technically have a twitter account ( that I don’t twitter from) and she’s one of the few people I follow, though I only check it about once a month.
        What did hers say?
Maybe they didn’t want all the crazies asking them about it, but a lot of his friends tweet about him generally, and they don’t seem to mind or if people are getting weird they tell them when they’re going too far.
I did find it strange that no one tweeted a congrats or anything. Maybe they were told not to, hence the deletions? Though didn’t that piano guy tweet?
Sorry, I really don’t know $hit about tweeting.

      • Me says:

Listen, y’all: Sing like no one’s listening, dance like no one’s watching, love like you’re being audited by the IRS and live like Big Brother is watching. Because Loose lips sink ships. LOL.

      • gg says:

Boy would I *love* to know what Amanda really thinks of Ms. Stick up her Arse. Gatiss is probably shitting himself thinking what it might mean for the future of Sherlock (as am I). The BBC is not a lucrative gig so I am assuming he will want to move on to greener pastures.

      • Pinky says:

Amanda was sent a link to an article with the question if it was true. She only replied with “aaaaah” but yeah. It’s deleted now

      • Me says:

GG, I imagine his friends are probably fine with her. Even the ones from more middle class beginnings, like Loo, are used to socializing with the artsy part of Sophie’s set. They bond on art, if not upbringing. You know, artists always go to the gala to mingle with the donors….

      • MissMary says:

For folks who will regularly tweet sex jokes about him, and make snarky friend comments about him, not commenting on his engagement is odd. Esp because every single one of them have never had a problem shutting down crazy fans, whether it’s ignoring/blocking, or outright calling them out. So yeah, it smacks of odd.

    • Kazlock 1307 says:

Not sure about the Elle remarks

But it does cast a light on the rumours that some of his friends aren’t keen on SH.

Adam posted a screenshot of the announcement I think. But removed it.

      Odd

      • MissMary says:

Yep, he tweeted a link to one of the online papers, then it was gone a few minutes later. Rhodes’ is the only tweet that stayed up.

    • MissMary says:

Given how close he is supposed to be with his friends, it does strike some of us as odd. Yeah there’s the “oh. being private” thing but as soon as you run an announcement in an international publication, you’re done being private about the nature of your relationship.

    • Renee says:

Just one more strange thing to go with the Odd Couple. I have to admit to being totally shocked at the engagement announcement yesterday. No matter what happens with them, I think I’ll always find them to be a couple of weirdos. LOL. All that stupid hiding they did…how precious and dumb.

      • MissMary says:

Gods bless their hearts but they’re not “that famous” by a long shot to “need” to hide their comings and goings.

      • Renee says:

I live in the States. No one I know even cares about him. Contrary to what BC/SH think, he’s not that famous. They could come here and walk around like normal people and prob no one would care. They aren’t George and Amal. Their engagement wasn’t even on the entertainment news here, that I’m aware of.

      • MissMary says:

@Renee: Word. I’m a long time fan of his (even with this weirdness–I love his work but his public persona is…wonky…ish…of late) and even I acknowledge he’s not ” famous-famous” here in the States. Unless fans know he’s at a specific spot, or paps are called, most folks wouldn’t recognize him on the street or, if they did, it’s more of a “oh, hey, you’re Sherlock. Okay.”

Though I gotta say, I may be wrong about this being bad PR timing. He’s due in the states for a run of events starting tomorrow (the 7th) and now his name is all over google and spreading like a virus due t his announcement/

      • Renee says:

MissMary. Maybe the engagement announcement was done on purpose at this time then. I wonder if Precious Snowflake made the trip with him and they’ll flaunt their love around the good ‘ole US of A. 😉

      • MissMary says:

Oh, she’ll do the “dash out before him, act coy and snotty, then smile at the cameras” thing like usual, I’m sure.

      • blended says:

@missmary, that’s what i said upthread. the timing is perfect for the U.S. press tour and ny premier. it was all planned this way.

      • Renee says:

I can hardly wait for the coy and snotty thing again. I wonder if they can manage to act like a couple in love at some point, seeing as how they’re both actors. Can’t be too hard to pull off. Maybe something better than those old and tired FO pics where they both look like they’re waiting to have root canal.

      • An says:

It’s not important here in the States. *shrugs*

I can see it hurting TIG’s potential BO but not by a lot, that’s about it at this point.

      • Nic says:

No way is this going to affect TIG box office adversely. It’s an injection of publicity.

    • MissLouLou says:

I found it odd too. I mean, Adam Ackland, who referred to him as ‘my Benedict’ cant even tweet a public congrats? And as for Amanda and Martin, they seem like a really down-to-earth couple. I honestly cant see them getting on well with SH at all. Same with Lou. Wonder if SH is a jealous type, because the amount of affection BC shows for everyone who is not SH is astounding. Yes, yes, I know we haven’t seen any recent pics of them together, but his solo pics have him looking tired, weary and unhappy. A man in love? Compare his pics to that of JR, if you will. One, a man in love with his beautiful wife. The other…

  56. Encumbered says:

On a different, less confusing note, looks like BC might have arrived stateside:

    http://www.lafilm.edu/blog/youre-invited-behind-closed-doors-benedict-cumberbatch

I’m wondering if we should arrange a rescue posse? At the very least a good red, white and blue intervention? Or brand him as another traitor named “Benedict” and throw him into military prison with Chelsea Manning?

    • Moodgirl says:

      Who lives in California?

    • Me says:

Um, I think that’s called kidnapping, Encumbered. Haha! Anyway, America is not short on beautiful, fun “interventions.” Finding one with more classic poise and education in Hollywood for our emergency purposes seems unlikely though. Drats, foiled again!

Really, though? This relationship may not last forever, but I don’t see it being a flash in the pan. If there were a divorce, I could see one of those Hollywood, “let’s get it in before 10 years elapse” things. But otherwise… All of this is so weird.

Guess life is like a box of chocolates.

    • claire says:

Let the interventions begin! Where do we start, her tumblr where she baited his fans, or her not treating servers well? I hope someone wakes him up. I agree he’s been shopping for a while: there’s a reason she took the bait after a few months. FFS

    • lindy79 says:

Be interesting to see if he meets fans outside (if they figure out where it is)..because you know someone will say Congrats to him.
He’ll probably just say thanks and move on.

  57. Moodgirl says:

My postings aren’t posting. I just saw a commercial for the Hollywood Film Awards scheduled to air November 14th on CBS. BC is featured in the commercial standing beside a woman wearing glasses. I don’t know if his image is from last year. IMHO he looks crazy. LOL!!!!!!!!!

    • An says:

If she wearing glasses or him? He better be, you can tell he can’t see print without ’em and it was driving me nuts last year.

  58. Me says:

Like a poster in the other thread mentioned, do you think it was lost on the Cumberbatches that they published the announcement on Guy Fawkes Day? Like, what a weird day. Of course, maybe it meant nothing to them, but BC’s creepy behavior lately also doesn’t totally dismiss some kind of message. What would he be saying? “Haha, fandom, I rebel against you! From you, I usurp power over my life once again!” Or, “Trick or Treat?” Or, “Oh, yeah. Watch this sh!t blow up, Cumberbabes. Gloriously.”

Also, I’m calling it. “Glorious” and “Brilliant” are the British equivalents of the American “Awesome” and “Nice.”

    • am says:

ha! i didn’t think of that. so what are you saying, they spec picked this day as a middle finger to the fandom? what else would it be? that seems like a lot of effort imo, then again, they have worked a lot of magic to remain essentially invisible to fan camera phones and press. i always assume that the facts are always way more benign that fatasy. my thought is they have affection and love for each other, will prob marry, hopefull it works out, but there was an element of settling. it happens

  59. ukbound says:

Considering how he has acted in the last few months, i.e., miserable and tired. I have suspicions that she is a nag. He is used to his mom nagging and controlling him, I bet she has just taken over the reins. I also think she is pregnant. I bet they tried to get pregnant. I think she is probably catty and snarky, that is how he has acted lately. He made that comment about Downton Abbey being “shit”. He has just been mouthing off and felt really free to be ugly. I suspect that is because he is around her all the time. Other people rub off on us quickly.

I do think she is pretty and looks like a good match in many ways. I hope he is happy. Perhaps he will be when all this hoopla dies down. Having all the “florals” chasing him in public has to get really old. This will reduce the number of florals, for sure. I wouldn’t want to be him, all the crap he puts up with, being recognized.

I bet $100 she is pregnant right now and they will get married quickly. No matter how long you get to know someone, you ever truly know them. Also, they change over time. So it doesn’t matter. Just get a good prenup. I also suspect they will fight about money. I see her wanting to spend it a lot and live the high life. He is a saver. We’ll never know though.

I truly hope he is happily married for a long time. It is tacky to wish otherwise.

  61. MyLittlePony says:

Now that Olivia and Cumby obviously are not coming back together (kind of always hoped they would), and my dream match i.e. Cumby and Laura Carmichael is not going to happen I am wondering how Sophie is going to handle all this. Mrs McConnaughey and Mrs Firth are I think good examples on “how to be a wife of a man lusted over by thousands of women, and making the marriage work” and also come accross really likeable and cute, too. It is interesting to see how Sophie is going to turn out…

  62. Moni says:

She kinda looks like a younger Sophie Marceau, no? Except less-French looking. A bit cooler, less warm and inviting.

  63. Nic says:

Have to laugh at the convenient ‘a friend says’ when they give the ‘he’s happier than he’s ever been’. Sweet lord, if that’s the case, then forget TIG, give the man an oscar for that performance. I’ve never seen someone look so hacked off and knackered in the last two months.

As an aside, I couldn’t resist looking at the mentions to adam ackland. Oh.my.god.

    *cringe* The desperation is horrific.

  64. Pinky says:

What do we make out of the fact that none of his friends have commented on it, with the exception of james Rhodes and the deleted tweets of Amanda Abbington and Adam Ackland…(wether instructed or not)

And then her family runs to the daily mail to comment on it?

    • nic says:

Apparently her family have been photographed in Hello too.

      • Pinky says:

        Yes they were…

What about that privacy you always talked about cumby?
        That’s some serious famewh… There..

      • Lindy79 says:

In the past or since the announcement?
I saw the DM bit but just thought it was harmless enough, if a little odd considering his sides silence, still her daughter is engaged so she’s excited.

It pretty much confirms that it’s Mummy Hunter that may have been the one leaking bits of information so expect more.

      • Nic says:

Yep. Today or yesterday I think. The whole thing just blows my mind. Mummy and Bro beaming.

      • MissMary says:

Yeah, that’s do nothing to help my opinion this is either PR or her pushing for it.

      • Pinky says:

My money is on her pushing it.

This is so outside any sort of comfort zone that he was ever in.. That boy is gonna get himself burned.
If this happens just after the engagement? Think of how this will continue..

  65. 'P'enny says:

    Christmas wedding then???

I got my invite in the post, it will be at the The Shining Hotel and the twins girls with plaits are coming.

I bet if it is a shot gun wedding, it will be this Christmas and it that would be a really good time because most of actor mates, family etc will be back and around. I can see the holly and ivy, and some poison berries in the pudding from the cumberfans, and loads of mistletoe for x-rated dancing.

Anyway, Cillian Murphy is taking me to the evening party, TH is pee’d off because Benedict didn’t propose to him and so isn’t going. He’s been forced to settle with his secret girlfriend who reputedly spends ages looking at bridal magazines, boutique ring designers and luxury holidays in the Pacific and he can’t cope with her nagging to make it a double wedding. I fear he may run off with Luke Evans in his fedora and never come back from Skull Island.

    • sigh((s)) says:

Lilac said Tommy married her. Was she telling a little fib? Maybe he’s just figuring out a way to announce it now that cumby’s taken the traditional Posh Times route from him.

    • Lilacflowers says:

‘p’enny, Luke Evans has been spotted on a date with a model recently.

sigh((s)) we’re not going to announce it. We’re keeping it very, very quiet. I will not be walking any red carpets and standing next to him with nothing to say, like an ornament. I’ll be in the bar and we’ll meet at the seats so I may hold his hand in consolation if he loses him and climb him like a tree if he wins.

  66. Nic says:

Also, IF it’s true about him asking her Monday and then rushing to call the papers for an announcement they next day. Yet another weird thing?

  67. claire says:

Just putting it out there: her fam sure didn’t wait to blab with the tabloids Ben hates so much and studiously avoids…

  68. OhHey says:

I could weep with joy reading these comments. I am so not buying Ben’s fantastic choice (or people trying to convince me they’re perfect for each other, gag me with a spoon, she’s not getting a pedestal from me). Something is definitely NQR with this rushy engagement, please let her not already be pregnant…and I am not in love with his choice anyway (not that he cares). I don’t think he’s so cynical as to do this as a stunt for awards season, if anything SHE’s driving the bus saying ‘I’m not going with you unless I have some status. Don’t want to get picked apart as your girlfriend, I’m only going as your fiancee’. Would not surprise me at all. I don’t like her, she looks like a miserable cow in most photos, and her quotes sound beyond pretentious. I picture Ben having to dance around her trying to make her happy. She doesn’t reek of domestic bliss either, can’t see her covered in baby vomit or walking that dog he so desperately wants while he’s off filming somewhere. For the once happy, goofy, relaxed and funny guy he once was, I can’t see her as being his soulmate. Like others I pray for a long engagement, long enough to see the error of his ways and end it before there are any children involved. He at least deserves someone happy, and happy to be with him. All this hiding I fear is her manipulation and conditions, that’s not how you act when you have found ‘the one you love’. Her family talking to the tabloids is just bizarre, apparently they didn’t get nondisclosure agreements ahead of time.

I feel like when he said “I know where I’m going to be for the next two years so it’s nice that I can plan around my schedule for once” makes me think he’s slotting this in while he’s working in England for a while, and it was convenient, and she was Miss Right Now. I wish him happiness but I don’t think he’s going to find it with her.

I agree about Wanda, I get the impression that she’s a fierce woman, who gets what she wants.
