Miles Teller sort of threw some shade on his soul sister, Shia LaBeouf

Back by unpopular demand! Yes, we’re still talking about Miles Teller, who is still doing interviews to promote Whiplash. It’s awfully nice of him, considering the more attention he brings to the film, the better JK Simmons’ chances at an Oscar nomination. HA! When I first started paying attention to Miles – just a few months ago, honestly – he reminded me physically of Shia LaBeouf. When I heard him speak, the Shia resemblance grew even stronger. But in previous interview, Miles first played up then threw shade on the comparison that he was somehow a young John Cusack-type (Miles wishes). Of course, Miles can barely open his mouth without offending people, whether he’s dismissing JK Simmons’ life long work as a character actor or telling people that he just did Divergent for the money. So it’s interesting to me that Miles is finally acknowledging that he does give a lot of people Shia LaBeouf vibes. But of course Miles has to throw some shade on that too:

Miles on Elvis: “We do certain things similarly.”

His comments about doing ‘Divergent’ for ‘business reasons’: “If people really want to do the research, for “Whiplash,” you make $7,000. For “Spectacular Now,” you make $7,000. For “Rabbit Hole,” you make $4,000. Studios don’t make dramas. So if an actor wants to satisfy themselves, they’re really not going to make any kind of money most of the time. That’s why there’s an allure of the studio films because you can drive a car if you do some. But I would never do a movie just for a paycheck. If Shailene [Woodley] was not in the movie, if Kate Winslet was not in that movie, if Neil Burger wasn’t directing it, I wouldn’t. Because I’ve been offered a lot of money to be in bad scripts.”

He used to want a career like Shia LaBeouf: “People tell me I’ve had a quick ascension into this business. But for me, when I was in college, I was looking at Shia LaBeouf. … I used to say that I needed to get a “Disturbia” and then I’ll be in the biz and I’ll kind of be “the other Shia” — the next guy. But I’m glad it went the way it’s went. I’ve been able to work on some studio films and some really good independent films.

Does he feel like he’s broken through? “Well, almost. At the end of the day, I just feel like I want to be a step ahead of … not the critics, the perception. I have a pretty wide taste. I’m doing a musical with Damien, his next film. It’s literally a song-and-dance, Gene Kelly kind of thing. And also, I want to shoot somebody. That’s the only thing I haven’t done, that kind of an action thing. Right off the bat, I’m trying to show I can do all this stuff.”

[From The Salt Lake Tribune]

This is not the kind of direct shade-throwing Miles did with John Cusack, where Miles blatantly said he didn’t want Cusack’s career. It feels more like Miles used to wish he had Shia’s career but nowadays, Miles is happy he took his own career path. But seriously, even with all of Shia’s craziness and everything, that kid’s still had a good career. He’s helmed a major franchise (Transformers), he’s done solid dramatic work (Lawless, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), he’s been the lead in several non-franchise films that have made good money (Eagle Eye, Disturbia) and he’s done weird artsy crap. Shia’s currently starring in Fury, which might be an Oscar contender. So… if we have Shia, why would we need Miles again? Oh, and do you realize that Shia is only one year older than Miles? Ha.

What’s with his upper lip? Did he have a flare-up?

  2. Jag says:

He makes the dumb face like Will Smith’s son. And since he can’t grow a mustache, he needs to shave off those few hairs.

As for him throwing shade, I really hope people stop hiring him. That way, we won’t have to read about him again.

  3. Abbott says:

Looks like someone dropped some Klonopin in KD Lang’s coffee here.

  4. Josefa says:

This kid isn’t even fun to hate on.

  5. NewWester says:

He reminds me of a snobby sales person in a high end store. You know the one that gives you the side eye because a customer is not “dressed to his standards”. Miles would be perfect for a Pretty Woman reboot

  6. paranormalgirl says:

    “Studios don’t make dramas.”

Oh really? No. They just don’t cast Miles Teller in them.

Can we please stop with him? Please?
I will say, as much as I dislike this guy, I don’t think he threw shade at Shia. It sounds to me like he stopped comparing his career to Shia’s and seemed pleased that his is going the way it is.
However, for how douchey Shia can be, I’d rather see him than Miles Teller. Shia might have thrown shade at the Transformers franchise and Indiana Jones 4-but he was not wrong about those movies. I don’t think I’ve heard Shia throw shade at actors other than Alec Baldwin, who is in a class by himself anyway.

  8. Adrien says:

This guy looks like Breckin Meyer.

  9. Boxy Lady says:

I think he looks like James Belushi, not John Cusack.

    • Red Snapper says:

In that one pic above, he looks like Joseph Gordon Levitt. Dude looks like a lot of people!!

  10. Whitney says:

This kid seems like a grade-A douche.

I want to punch this guy in the face. He looks young, but he’s in his late 20s right? Old enough to know better than to keep spewing the stupid crap coming out of his mouth. Not hot, not nice, and clearly not talented enouhh to make me see one of his movies. Now go away miles. I’m going to look at John Cusacks Twitter feed and think about you could never, ever be him even if you tried.

I saw Whiplash and thought Miles was excellent. It was a complex character to be sure. I was simultaneously rooting for him and annoyed with him. As for the quotes from his interviews, the more one says, the more likely it is to get your words misunderstood and even more so when you’re new to the game. I think he’s been interviewed a lot and some of his words have been taken out of context, such as this latest quote. I see no shade thrown on Shia, instead it’s him describing the evolution of his own desires. Alas, some in the media need to create a juicy story where there is no story at all. I thought his performance in Whiplash is noteworthy , the movie was well done and I think he has a bright future. I almost never get irritated by what actors say because I put my foot into mouth daily, and I imagine it’s infinitely harder to be in the public eye.

I saw it yesterday. The movie was great but it’s JK S. who’s the standout. Miles is a good (but not great) actor. The hype from the movie has gone to his head.

I haven’t seen his work, so I can’t comment. But really, he pissed me off when he administered the cut direct to Lloyd Dobbler. you just don’t f*ck with the Cusack, kid. You just don’t.

  15. SAKS says:

I can’t stand this guy, who I didn’t even know before this site’s coverage. Shia is actually more likeable, and that’s saying something….

  16. TOK says:

It’s tough to get a hold on this douche and his deal from photos (“Him?”), because he’s not handsome at all, but so help me, he’s got something on screen. I’ve seen him in Rabbit Hole, The Spectacular Now, and Whiplash, and he’s good. Really good.

  17. me says:

The more this guy opens his mouth, the more he annoys me. If he wants a long and respectable career in Hollywood, he needs to learn when to shut up.

  18. Fatty Magoo says:

“Soul sister” Lmao but seriously this guy is on my last nerve. And we’re they asking him about Elvis Presley? I don’t know if that has anything to do with the movie since I haven’t seen it.

  19. caitie says:

I like MIles!! He tells it straight – So refreshing!

  20. moon says:

I think you’re over reading into his comments.

  21. Dara says:

Huh – he was in Divergent and Footloose? For the life of me I couldn’t identify which character he played in either of those, he didn’t even register. I’ve got my issues with Shia, but at least he’s memorable. He had about 2 lines in a movie ages ago (long before Transformers) and I immediately went, “Who’s that kid? He’s really interesting”. This guy – not so much.

Oh, btw – JK Simmons needs to win everything! The depth and emotion he brings to his Yellow M&M character is breathtaking.

  22. Katherine says:

I just saw the Spectacular Now last night, and I agree he is grating and kinda annoying, but he is also incredibly charming and complex as an actor. His acting felt real to me, like an extension of himself that was true. I can see him as a really good dramatist and think he’d be perfect as an extraordinarily BAD guy cuz hes good at portraying that vibe and he’s good at bringing the intensity and realness. I love Shia and I am also becoming a fan of Miles!
