Kristen Stewart vs. Julianne Moore: who had the better look at the AFI Fest?

FFN_KM_StillAlice_111214_51583879

Here are some photos from the AFI Fest premiere of Still Alice, the film that will likely make Julianne Moore a Best Actress Oscar contender this year. Most Oscar-prognosticators have Julianne on the short list, so she’s actually a “sure thing” these days. But Kristen Stewart wants an Oscar nomination too – for Best Supporting. So that’s why Kristen came out to support the film.

I have to say… Kristen looks really great these days. I’ve always said she has some really great makeup people working for her, plus she just has a great face for strong makeup looks. I’m loving her current hair too! Kristen’s dress is Chanel, obviously. She’s a Chanel girl now, and she’s the current face of Chanel’s Paris-Dallas collection. While I don’t think this whole look is her best ever, she’s improving. Significantly improving. I’m actually hoping she does get some nominations because I want to see more of her on some major red carpets.

Standing next to Julianne Moore, Kristen actually looked like the more fashionable one. That’s because Julianne’s style is just… ugh!!! God, I LOVE Julianne, but her red carpet looks are never great. This ensemble is Louis Vuitton. I might have been able to get on board with the dress, but the head-to-toe look with those lace tights? NOOOO. I’m sorry if this sounds ageist, but a 53 year old woman has no business in this ensemble.

Meanwhile, Kristen participated in the AFI Fest round-table with some other actors – go here to read the Hollywood Reporter’s coverage. Kristen said she rejected George Clooney’s “one for them, one for me” mantra of choosing films, saying:

“I’m genuinely very much blown with the wind, I follow the gut. It’s not a tactical approach. I can greenlight a movie now that I’ve done five Twilight movies, but I just think it’s doing things for the right reason. There’s no way to quantify it. Even if something doesn’t completely equal success, if you don’t go, this script and director and cast and budget [spell success], I’m fully willing to hop on something if I’m interested in one person who’s involved in it, or one line that my character says that I’ve always been dying to say — it’s like, I will make a bad movie. Because it’s like, I’m like, whatever — I didn’t make it myself!”

[From THR]

This is not the first time Kristen has basically said that if you think she’s made a bad movie, it’s not her fault because she didn’t make the movie all by herself. Which is true… sort of. It seems sort of like Kristen is saying “Not my fault if a movie fails, it’s always someone else’s fault!”

Oh, and Kristen and Robert Pattinson are both going to attend the Hollywood Film Awards on Friday night. SO MUCH TWIHARD DRAMA. It should be fun.

Julianne all the way – she’s one hot mama!

    • mia girl says:

Yeah. I have to agree, I like Moore’s dress -although those tights. Egads. No Bueno.

Stewart’s hair and makeup are fierce, but her dress looks like something one of the 40something Bravo Housewives would wear.

      • Amanda says:

I don’t get why people always lose their *ish at Kristen’s makeup. It’s the same smokey eyes just in different colors for YEARS now.

    • Courtney says:

Julianne is everything. I hope I look half that good when I’m her age.

    • Tristan says:

It is shocking that Julianne Moore doesn’t have a bookcase full of Academy Awards. It is about time the Academy recognised her immense talent

  2. Heather says:

I love and adore Julianne and I love a lot of her red carpet looks. But I have to agree with you – this look is not good. The tights for one are strange. I am no fan of Kristen but she does look much better. Although I do not like the short hair!

    • Pixelated says:

If I could rock Kristen’s look, I totally would! As someone who is the same age as her, it’s really refreshing to see someone in Hollywood that looks unique and beautiful (same for my girl Julianne). She, to me, looks normal and like someone I would want to be friends with. Four for you, Glen Coco. You go, Glen Coco! 🙂

      • mango says:

Lol and you can listen to her go on for hours about how she’s “extremely famous” thanks to twilight, how she can “get any role with the snap of my fingers”, yet is “incredibly honest and real” unlike all other actresses with their soooo boring little tool belts. Her flat monotone voice and blank no what matter the character is feeling expressions put Streep to shame!

      • ORLY says:

Mango, that is the realest comment on this post. Thanks for that! 😎

  3. Abbott says:

I know we are all distracted by the Otter King Kampaign but the supporting actress race may be where it’s at. We’ve got Emma on Broadway (that timing was nice), Keira maybe-probably-totally pregnant, Felicity Jones, and KStew taking time off to pursue her passion for making paper mache warthogs (or whatever). These ladies are making moves and the fashion will be spectacular.

    Her Chanel dress is sick.

  4. Hawkeye says:

Spot on about Julianne Moore’s red carpet style. (Her hair though is the absolute best. I love the colour, I love the shine, I love that it never looks overdone or too messy.) And Kristen Stewart is inarticulate as always.

  5. Tifygodess24 says:

I’m impressed that Kristen looks like she actually showered and washed her hair for the event! The tattoo is ugly but she looks good.

    • suziekew says:

And in another pic of Kristen it shows that she has yet another ugly tattoo on the back of the arm. It’s the same monochromatic type with the interesting initials of R I or R L, difficult to say for sure. She is a very pretty girl, and I don’t understand the need to permanently mark her skin with multiple tattoos.

Don’t you just love how she can greenlight any movie because of the 5 Twilight movies? She sounds more and more full of herself every time she opens her mouth.

      • Tracy says:

Actually she can get projects greenlight, it is a fact. It is know in the industry, so why should she not be honest about it. Kristen and Jennifer Lawrence seem to be the only two young actresses who can get projects greenlighted. I am proud of them, both of them. It may not last forever, but at the moment Kristen can get movies made. As a woman. I am proud of her and Jennifer. Would anyone put a man down for acknowledging being able to get movies funded.

    • deehunny says:

This is the best she’s ever looked IMO. The very best. The Author is right about her having the face for strong makeup. She should go in this direction more. I think of all her red carpets with Rob and her looks were tragic

  6. Julianne Moore looks good but I wish she went bold with her makeup. Kristen Stewart actually looks really good. As far as the i terview with K-Stew goes she makes me dislike her so much. K-Stew is the type of actress that has little talent and tries to fluff herself up to seem way more talented than she actually is. She was a talented child actress but now that she’s an adult she has not worked on her craft at all. Her arrogance is only a façade to hide her lack of talent.

  7. PunkyMomma says:

It’s a great look for Stewart. The hair is terrific. But I would take issue with her comment about being able to greenlight a movie at this point in her career – maybe a few years down the road, but not now.

Julianne is a beautiful woman – that ensemble makes her look like she’s trying too hard. And she looks so uncomfortable in it.

    • Jenna says:

But she has already. The director/producer of Camp X-Ray openly said she got that movie greenlit. Once they cast her, they got their funding.

      • double says:

that was a very small budget, I think 2 mil. So Kristen didn’t lie but if you think she can get a 60mil budget greenlit I think you’re wrong.

      • ORLY says:

Kristen can get small budget, independent films made. That’s it. She is no box office maven, there is no way se can get a potential blockbuster green lit.

  8. Sullivan says:

They’re both beautiful women, but Kristen’s styling is stellar. She looks fabulous.

    • Kitten says:

      +1. They’re both smokin’.
I just love K-Stew with short hair. It’s so perfect on her.

    • FLORC says:

Kristen actually looks great! Post scandal she appears to have matured a with better management and styling. She’s playing the game she swore she never would and it’s working for her. Now if she can keep the hypocritical ramblings and flipping off paps to a minimum she’d got a good future in that industry.

  9. ali says:

K-Stew looks great. Happy everything is going well for her.

J-Mo can do no wrong so I will not comment!

  10. Gillian says:

Between Aniston and Stewart I don’t know who are most desperate

    • whatsmyname? says:

Aniston easily. Atleast Stewart have SOME genuine buzz (at least I think so? haha)

    • Div says:

Stewart is being backed by Sony Picture Classics, which has a good track record. She’s out there, but not that much either so I don’t get the desperate remarks. Aniston’s film had to make their own distribution company for it to even get out.

    • Courtney says:

Aniston for sure. But KStew is thirsty.

    • Jenna says:

How is going to her movie’s premiere “desperate”? On top of that, how is she any more desperate than the dozens of others, from Julianne Moore right next to her, to Felicity Jones, to Keira Knightley, who is EVERYWHERE for The Imitation Game, to Reese Witherspoon, who is everywhere, period. Eddie Redmayne, Steve Carell, Cumberbatch, these people have been showing up all over the place. When they’ve got studios backing them, they’re pretty much all the same and go to various events.

      • Sandra says:

Because her and Aniston will not be nominated

      • suziekew says:

To me it’s the comments that hurt her the most. She talks out of both sides of her mouth….she can greenlight a movie but at the same time she thinks everyone else in the business is not genuine or honest with themselves. She needs to keep her mouth shut and just show up looking clean and styled.

    • sarah says:

      @Gillian
I made a similar comment below, lol.
They are so similar..looks & Oscar thirst.

  11. FingerBinger says:

Kristen looks great. I guess the hair is supposed to be punk rock. It looks good ,it suits her.

  12. Diana B says:

Will she get an Oscar nom, though? I was hearing so many great things about her projects so I went to see Camp X Ray expecting her to be great. Well, surprise surprise she was her mumbling twitching self. Peyman Moaadi saved that movie and he was so good in it, but her? not so much. So I’m wondering whether all this buzz she’s getting from Clouds of Sils Maria and Still Alice is just that: empty buzz.

    Juliane is lovely as always.

  13. Josephine says:

Kristen’s dress is unflattering and ugly on the top, but her make-up is beautiful and her hair is great. But Julianne is just never going to be beat by a youngin’, even when she’s wearing those hideous tights!

  14. Hazel says:

I really love Kristen’s short hair but I didn’t like her dress. Julianne could wear a paper bag and she’d outshine most of the red carpet.

If Kristen is going to campaign, she needs to realise that the people in the Academy are not going to respond well to someone boasting about how it easy it is for them to green light films and get jobs. A lot of the Academy is made up by crew members who struggle to get a constant flow of jobs. She’s fighting Emma Stone for that last spot and when most of the Academy go for the ones who charm them the most, arrogance is not gonna win.

    • stormy says:

Someone needs to tell her that her teenage twilight fans are not voting.

    • Gillian says:

Even Variety said that the awards focus for the film is centered on Moore

    • Fiona says:

I don’t think she means it like that. She’s not boasting, she’s being honest about her opportunities. She’s in a position to get indie’s made, to help get funding for projects that ordinarily would not and in the context of the interview, which is how and why she picks certain projects, I don’t think it’s “arrogant”. She has an outside chance, she’s circling right around the top 5 according to most sites.

      • Hazel says:

I know but she needs to play it differently. For example, last year I think Leo could have won it but he didn’t have a narrative. He was paid $20M for the role, it was easily financed and no one had to struggle. But Matthew, he lost weight, the financing nearly fell through, it took years to get off the ground; it was presented as something really tough even though he was probably able to green light any film he wanted. That really resonated with the Academy.

I mean this year you have Laura Dern campaigning her ass off and I bet she’s talking a lot about the struggles she encountered as a older woman in this industry, Jessica Chastain is “the victim” to mean old Paramount, and you have Emma Stone on Broadway doing a role she loves that she thought she had lost the chance to. Kristen should mention how the industry unjustly reacted to her scandal, how it was sexist, unfair etc.

      • Anname says:

It is sad that winning an Oscar is more dependent on the campaign than on the performance. Spend $20 million, tell your sob story, and the Oscar is all yours.

      • Abbott says:

@Hazel I *thought* Emma Stone was pretty much a sure deal along with Patricia Arquette? At least the lists I’ve read.

Knightley, Felicity Jones, Streep, Dern, and maybe Sienna Miller? I don’t think Stewart stands much of a chance for an Oscar nom, maybe a GG.

      • Hazel says:

@Abbot Not really. The only sure ones are Arquette, Keira and Meryl. Sienna has no chance and Felicity is in lead.

      • Abbott says:

@Hazel I thought there were rumors Felicity would throw her name into the supporting category because the lead is pretty stacked. I mean, with Jennifer Aniston now in the mix it could be anyone’s race 😉

      • Hazel says:

@Abbott no way Jennifer gets anything above a GG nom. The production company had to create their own distribution company because no one wanted the film.

Lead Actress, like always, is empty with 7 contenders at most and Felicity has been everywhere promoting her film. She’s getting in easily.

      • Jenna says:

@Hazel Are you actually suggesting she should open up a two and a half year old scandal WHILE campaigning for awards? No way. Her narrative is one that’s been done before — actor who has been written off as a joke surprises with good performance (in fact, in her case it’s three performances this year). It’s worked for McConaughey, it’s worked for Bullock — not saying it’ll work for her or that she is at their level, but that’s her strongest possible narrative. Not drudging up a horrible tabloid scandal years after the fact.

  15. DavidBowie says:

    I love Kristen’s shoes.

  16. bns says:

    That tattoo was a mistake.

  17. whatsmyname? says:

Julianne should keep the dress and burn everything else.

Kristens hairstyle doesn’t look good to me, she keeps pushing it all to one side like she used to do when she had long hair but it just looks weird with this length.

  18. Penelope says:

Kristen looks great but I’d like to see a more flattering hairstyle on her. Julianne is one of my favorite actresses but her outfit here is a big NO. She never seems to nail it lately.

  19. karen says:

…they’re basically wearing the same look. ..which is a shame cos one’s 25 and the other’s 45 or so. The ratty hair’s the same on both. But short sleeves, faded veneers and thick tights lead me to say that Ms Moore must be the better actress.

    • Penelope says:

Moore is actually 8 years along from 45, but either way, this outfit is not a good or age-appropriate look. 🙂

      • noway says:

I disagree to some extent, the dress is fine but the tights throw in the why did she do this land? The tights really ruin the outfit, and the shoes are just ugly. But look at her in just the dress and you see it isn’t that bad. I can’t stand the way Kristen stands and poses she just looks so uncomfortable.

  20. Fiona says:

I don’t think that’s what she’s saying. I just think that she’s saying when you make a film, you’re all in it together. You carry it together, actors, directors, crew, etc. and win or lose, you carry that together.

    • Anname says:

Why is it that after every Kristen interview, her fans have to say “That’s not what she meant….”?
Is it just because she is a terribly inarticulate interviewee, or is it just because in reality she is completely arrogant and believes it is always someone else’s fault?

      • mia girl says:

A mix of both I’d say.

      • chess says:

I think her never ending awkwardness combined with the years of cocky arrogant comments on everything from acting to being on Twitter, I think she a very insecure girl who uses arrogance to cover it up. Something that usually ends once you’re out of your teens right?

      • Div says:

Honestly, I don’t see anything wrong with her comments. RPattz said a similar thing recently when promoting his latest indie. I think some of the detractors are super critical of her, and some of her Stans are way too over defensive. It’s inarticulate, but at the end of the day an actor/actress is not going to take a financial hit if a movie fails and it won’t hurt their career unless it’s a string of mainstream flops. The director/producers are more affected by one bad film then an actor. There are also a lot of people involved, so yeah it is not all on her. I do get why she mentioned the green lighting thing because it was about indies, but that was not a good thing to say even if it’s mostly true on a smaller scale because the academy longs to hear about the struggle.

      • suziekew says:

Both! But I say she favors the “it’s someone else’s fault” more.

      • Tracy says:

I think she was plenty clear. She does her part as an actress. Everyone else does their part, the other actors, writers, directors, producers and editors. If a move succeeds or fails, it is because of all their work.

  21. scout says:

Moore all the way except ugly tights.

  22. Amy Tennant says:

I used to wear those textured tights in the early ’90s and didn’t have a friend to stop me. Julianne! Stahp!

  23. Frodo lives says:

They both look great! I wonder how often men are put against each in the whole ‘who wore it best’ shtick.

  24. Sisi says:

Is Kristen really campaigning or is she being supportive of Jullianne?

  25. Cindy says:

Kristen Stewart’s acting is so so bad. Is someone in Hollywood playing a joke on us? She does get good reviews and this baffles me. What am I missing? Please, someone explain! I wonder sometimes if her co-stars hear these rave reviews and than, secretly, when they have to work with her, think THEY are going insane too because she is so awful. This is, hand to god, a true story- when I saw twilight (the first one), I thought, “why would someone so young get botox?” Than I wondered if she was on medication or had a medical condition because her face does not move. Sorry so long, but I need answers!

    • sarah says:

Both her parents work in the industry. Kstew has said it herself that she never auditioned for a single role. They were just given to her because of her connections. She is such a bad actress that it’s super distracting in a scene.

      • delia says:

Her parents have no industry pull. Like at all. Writers and stage managers for the George Lopez late night show aren’t going to do you any good.. You need parents who are agents or producers or higher up the studio ladder to have proper pull. Or like gywenyth, have Spielberg be your godfather.

  26. Div says:

I actually love both dresses, but Julianne’s tights are awful.

  27. MissTrial says:

“NOOOO. I’m sorry if this sounds ageist, but a 53 year old woman has no business in this ensemble”

It’s just bad, NO woman has ” business in this ensemble.”

  28. sarah says:

    delete

  29. sarah says:

Kristen cannot act & her arrogance is laughable at this point. Anniston & Kstew Oscar campaign is not gonna happen.

  30. St says:

Well as always – Kristen makes indie movie, then acts like it will get all nominations simply because it’s indie movie (and people like Kristen or Lohan think that every indie gets nominations). So Kristen “campaigns”,shows up on screenings alongside other possible contenders. Then movie comes up and bombs even at limited release. Then first nominations come out and Kristen is nowhere to be found.

Almost every freaking year it’s the same thing. God Kristen – just stop. It’s not gonna happen.

    • Tracy says:

Except for the millions Sony Picture is spending on her campaign. They offered to campaign her for Best Supporting Actress, so why shouldn’t she accept. I am pretty sure Sony Picture would not waste the money, if they were thrilled with her performance and possible chances.

  31. lucy2 says:

I love Julianne, but I never like her fashion choices. But it’s OK – her talent, beauty, and general awesomeness more than make up for it.
I actually like Kristen’s look here, the choppy hair cut suits her and the dress isn’t bad.
