Ryan Gosling is too ‘artsy, serious’ to agree to be People’s Sexiest Man Alive

FFN_Gosling_Ryan_BJJVAH_111514_51586204

I tend to think the reaction to Chris Hemsworth being named the 2014 Sexiest Man Alive was a resounding “meh.” People weren’t angry about the choice, people acknowledge that he’s a good-looking guy with a fantastic Thor-body. But are there scores of women out there who are, like, all about Hemsworth and only Hemsworth? Not really. But, as I said, at least people weren’t angry. Everyone was truly ANGRY when Bradley Cooper was named the SMA back in 2011. People actually protested the choice of B-Coop, mainly (I suppose) because 2011 was seen as “Ryan Gosling’s year,” like he was the one in the news and it was the height of the Hey-Girl-dom. I guess the Gosloonies always thought that People Magazine snubbed him outright. But The Wrap’s sources now say that Gosling got the approach about SMA a few times and he turned them down every time:

People magazine’s annual “Sexiest Man Alive” issue has sparked backlash yet again, for passing over actor Ryan Gosling as cover star — but the “The Notebook” actor has repeatedly turned down the honor, an insider told TheWrap. So to use a catchphrase in the spirit of the web’s most popular Gosling memes: “Hey girl, calm the Internet down.”

“They tried a few times, especially during his huge year in 2011,” an individual close to the cover negotiations said. Multiple efforts were consistently squashed by the actor’s team.

“The consensus was he’s too serious for it, too artsy,” the individual added.

A spokesperson for Gosling has not yet returned TheWrap’s request for comment. People’s Editorial Director told TheWrap: “While I look forward to the day when Ryan Gosling is named Sexiest Man Alive, this was not his year. Our 2014 honoree Chris Hemsworth was our first and only choice. If you want to know why, just look at him. I mean, seriously.”

Outlets like BuzzFeed and rabid, Gosling-obsessed Tumblr users mourned his absent mug each year, even taking their protest to the front steps of Time Inc.’s New York headquarters. But it’s the “Drive” star who speeds away from the glory.

We understand the bid to be taken seriously, as Gosling’s silent and brooding acting style earns him art house cred. But there’s no ignoring he’s the Internet’s collective boyfriend: street fight referee, feminist icon and refuser of cereal all rolled into one. Yes, the superlative is superficial. Accepting usually entails an obligatory shirtless or flexing photo shoot, sidebars about ab routines and a giddy Q&A. But the exposure is priceless and the reign a whole 12 months.

Also, since it’s 1985 launch, “Sexiest Man” has some alumni most people would deem substantial actors: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper and Tom Cruise to name a few. Gosling devotees shouldn’t abandon hope just yet. A shift in his perspective might sway him to eventually grace the cover.

The recent birth of his daughter Esemeralda may inspire some adventure. It’s a raging cliche in the realm of celeb maternity that stars don’t fully appreciate their bodies until giving birth. Ryan didn’t do the pushing (shout out Eva Mendes!) but maybe some of that empowerment will rub off.

[From The Wrap]

I think this is the truth. I think People Magazine’s editors have approached Gosling’s people before – perhaps not this year, but in years past – and Gosling has shut it down. I also believe he’s shut it down because he believes he’s too artistic, that one shouldn’t have to hustle for one’s art. I also think Gosling doesn’t really give a crap about being the internet’s boyfriend, you know? He’s never played into it the same way some people (CUMBERCOUGH) have. Still… if you get turned down by Gosling, why in the world would you then settle on BRADLEY COOPER?!

I don’t blame him. People needs to stop with this nonsense, especially after Picking Levine and Goop.

  2. mimif says:

Let’s talk about Jason Bateman again, aka the antithesis to Hey Girl here.

    • mia girl says:

      So much this!
I’m still not wearing pants today because of how much Bateman charmed them off of me with yesterday’s Kimmel video.

    • Lori says:

oh yes lets. He was just lovely with his speech on Kimmel. And the longer hair is really working for him.

  3. Marianne says:

Rumor is that Chris Evans turned it down this year.

I dont really blame actors if they dont want it. Whether they think they’re too artistic or not. Some might just find it kind of embarrassing.

    • Cici says:

I don’t think they are necessarily against the title, they just don’t want to do the photoshoot and exclusive interview if there is nothing for them in it aka they don’t have a movie out to promote.

    • Anname says:

The SMA has to do the indepth interview, talking about his personal life too. That is a deal breaker for some I think.

      • Someonestolemyname1 says:

        +1

      • Sara says:

yes, the actors and actresses who want to protect their private lifes turn this down.
Gosling had a baby this year and as far as i know he doesnt talk about it.

obviously People wont throw their cover star under the bus, but i am sure they would have loved the exclusive interview with Ryan and Eva. “What makes him so sexy is that he is a great father” and the typical lines you read in such interviews.

    • Artemis says:

Most don’t need it. Gosling would be one of those who don’t need it. What value would that add to his career? Nothing. It would probably perpetuate these silly ‘hey girl’ notions about him. In recent years, the winners clearly needed the exposure that comes with the title. Popularity.

  4. JKL says:

I read this great Slate piece today about the SMA: http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2014/11/chris_hemsworth_is_the_sexiest_man_alive_is_the_sexiest_man_alive_2014_a.html
Bascially the original article, about Mel Gibson, was meant to be somewhat ironic; that the ragey, alcoholic a-hole in the piece could still be “sexy.” Just shows what a joke the whole thing has become.

    • cr says:

They seem to be butt-kissing Lainey, but this is great: “The one SMA category that Levine fails to satisfy is one that you shouldn’t have to actually say: that the Sexiest Man Alive should be nominally appealing to other human beings. As Jezebel’s Madeleine Davies put it, “Adam Levine is not the Sexiest Man Alive.” He is “the human equivalent of testing positive for chlamydia.” Levine was the magazine’s most hollow choice ever: not the Sexiest Man Alive, but perhaps the most Sexiest Man Alive-y man alive. “

  5. PunkyMomma says:

Look, who wants to follow in the footsteps of Adam Levine?

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

That is a valid point for sure. Levine may have permanently robbed the award of its sexiness and cachet.

  6. Ugh, I can see Bradley Cooper’s appeal (although he’s a little too serial killer/frat boy ‘hot’ to me)—but why settle for ADAM LEVINE. Who looks like a drowned rat, sings like a drowned rat, and doesn’t even have a personality to make up for any of it (Mr. Pull Out Method). I’ll never get over it. Never. Adam Levine being named Sexiest Man Alive by PEOPLE ranks up there with Goop winning the Oscar over Cate Blanchett.

    • Someonestolemyname1 says:

Levine was the worst pick, imo, he’s not even sexy and barely attractive.
I said WTF….,when I saw him on the cover.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

      Exactly. Ex-freaking-zactly.

    • Brandii says:

Duh, Isnt this obvious? Because the title has little to do with being sexy and everything to do with the audience you are attempting to appeal to and ofcourse your agents negotiation skills.

    • Josefa says:

I completely agree. I know people here aren’t very fond of BCoop, but I find him quite handsome (minus the serial killer eyes) and talented. But I will never understand the appeal of Adam Levine. He’s a major douchebag, sings like a castrated sheep and his body is the most bizarre and strange mix of too muscular and too skinny. He’s the opposite of sexy to me.

  7. Jegede says:

    I like some of his films but I’m not a Gosling fan girl so may I ask;

Why don’t his fans who come out with this every SMA year, actually use their time to go see his films at the box office so they can turn a profit?
(And no Crazy, Stupid,Love was an ensemble piece that does not count)

Why don’t they hector the studios to give his critically panned opus, Lost River, a release date?

IMO he’s symptomatic of internet obsession which does not translate to hard currency.

And the repetitive he’s too ‘cool’ ‘non-conformist’ ‘edgy’ ‘auteur’ for the SMA line is tiresome.
And its in poor taste too as it casts shade at whoever was named for the year as being non credible

Again I’m not a big fan so I see things differently
At least Matt Damon had the self awareness to just laugh off his win, tongue in cheek, rather than turn it into some social narrative.

    • Bridget says:

In a nutshell, he makes movies that the Hey Girl crowd would never actually want to see. Could you imagine them lining up for Blue Valentine?

Personally, I think Gosling got a bit too precious about being such a serious and method-y actor. But I will also acknowledge that he has done some great work, and hopefully he can get over himself just a little bit and do something really great again.

  8. Louise177 says:

I don’t think Ryan thinks he’s too artsy for it. Just thinks it’s a stupid gimmick.

    • Sofia says:

I was going to write that ^_^ That stuff is basically bought and encourages the celebrity road and because he is in it for the work and nothing else he just doesn’t care about it. He actually seems pretty fine about stuff people do online, I saw a reaction from him about the “hey girl” memes and it was hilarious. Just because he thinks for his head and doesn’t follow the “I wanna be a star” road then he is artsy and arrogant? Please…

  9. Lahdidahbaby says:

Hemsworth is hunky, if that’s all it takes to think someone is sexy. But there’s no intriguing tension or conflict behind his eyes, no wit, intellect, or worldly sophistication to give him intrigue – just no sexy complexity. I mean at ALL. Even though Ryan and, say, Cumby are less conventionally hunky-looking by far imo, both are more interesting men in a sexual way because they possess that je ne c’est quoi that makes my most base and beastly sexual curiosity rise.

    • Sara says:

i agree. Hemsworth is like the male equivalent to a female comic hero. exaggerated bodyshape but no substance.

    • Kitten says:

      YES. Perfectly stated.

For instance Hardy is sexy to me not because of how he looks, but how he acts. For me, he has that sexy complexity you’re talking about.
Also, I’m stealing “sexy complexity” to use in the future.

      • Marty says:

Honestly I see Hemsworth as pre-Jolie Brad Pitt. Sexy, yes, but also predictable. I still maintain the most interesting thing about Brad Pitt is his wife. I see Hemsworth the same way, except his wife is even more boring then he is.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

Ahahaha, it’s yours, kitten. Yeah to both of you, I don’t think People Mag really gets what makes a man truly desirable to a female over twelve. But maybe the tween female is their target audience or something.

    • Sofia says:

*he doesn’t make my kettle whistle* hehehe

    • Veronica says:

Eh. We don’t expect women to have “depth” to their beauty, so I’m fine with the occasional man fulfilling the “but please don’t talk” fantasy.

  10. Ciria says:

I can totally see this. He keeps his private life on lock down so he doesn’t seem like he’d be into the selling of his image that usually goes with People’s Sexiest Man Alive.

  11. Mia4S says:

I think it’s precious that some people actually take it seriously.

I’m not sure I agree with the list of “substantial actors” in that article. Let’s just say there’s a reason you won’t see Gosling, DiCaprio, Bale, Fassbender, etc. on that cover. Those are the “substantial” actors (whatever you think of them personally). Sexiest Man Alive is about pandering to the public and being a “STAR”.

  12. bns says:

    Gosling isn’t sexy, though.

  13. Rachel says:

I don’t understand the notion popular around here that Bradley Cooper is unappealing. I think most people find him to be very attractive and talented.

And Gosling is hot but a lot of his acting is just grunts and stares.

  14. Sara says:

i would have hoped that we were a bit more evolved as a society. the quote: “If you want to know why, just look at him. I mean, seriously.” is so sad actually. thats all it takes. genetic lottery and you are set for life and other people will treat you like a royal…

    • Sofia says:

Because you got lucky on the looks you need an award and are somehow better than others. That’s where we are still at:/

  15. Bee says:

I have never found Gosling attractive, even a little bit. He has the weirdest shape face and squinty eyes. No way is he the sexiest man alive, not that Hemsworth is either IMO.

    • Maum says:

I would have agreed with you until I randomly happened to watch a few of his movies in quick succession. I still don’t find physically good looking but on screen he has (IMO) great presence and there’s something quite magnetic about him.

      I was converted.

      • andypandy says:

I agree he is much better in motion on films than he is in stills and he does have good range he was a completely different character in say Lars and the Real girl than he was in Blue valentine Or Half Nelson and Believable as each

      • Sofia says:

Being sexy has very little to do about the looks alone: it’s more about attitude, voice, what they say, how they say it, how they look at you. It’s the same sort of confusion between sex and eroticism. My opinion though.

    • layla says:

      + Eleventy-Billion !

The Baby Goose is neither hot, nor sexy. Damn, he’s not even attractive. I’ve never understood the hype. Even his buff body in Crazy, Sexy, Love was just SO . MUCH . TRY .

      Ugh – he’s a complete turn OFF.

As for Hemsworth, he’s not my type and I don’t get particularly tingly for him.. but at least I can see how some would find him attractive and be hot for his beef-cake bod.

  16. amanda says:

I think Chris earns the #1 spot. I think he is super sexy! I personally think he is gorgeous looking and the fact that he is a family man just makes him that much more appealing.

    • CC says:

I must think too much like a guy because a “husband”, “family man” or even a “father” TOTALLY ruins the fantasy for me. Hard to be turned on about a guy’s marriage and/or kids with another woman.

I know, I know, I’m the minority, just saying: not everyone finds it appealing, and that’s why.

  17. Hannah says:

He probably was offered it in 2011. I can believe that.

  18. FingerBinge other ways to er says:

I don’t think being People’s sexiest man would hurt his career. Denzel Washington was named sexiest man alive and it never hurt his career or stopped people from talking him seriously as an actor.

    • whatsmyname? says:

Yeah there is no reason for it to hurt anyones career. Being on the cover of People unless it’s for a bad reason isn’t something negative.

    • andypandy says:

Back then it was still credible long ago before it descended in Adam Levine territory …LOL

    • Sofia says:

But see… why did Denzel do that? Didn’t hurt his career but did it help? What’s the point?

  19. Penelope says:

    “Also, since it’s 1985 launch…”

GRAMMAR FAIL, The Wrap. Get your house in order!

And when it comes to TSMA, I still say…CHARLIE GOT ROBBED!!

  20. Olive says:

Gosling just doesn’t appeal to me anymore. Ever sine he got with Eva he’s become pi$$ed off at the world or something. He never looks happy.

  21. Angie says:

Adam Levine is their worst choice ever. I still don’t understand, how they didn’t pick Justin Timberlake over him. I don’t like Justin and don’t find him sexy, but it’s still a better choice than Adam (almost everybody is). He is more famous and popular, and he seems to have a big ego so probably ok with being the sexiest man alive XD . I found it weird that Robert Downey Jr and Will smith were never People’s SMA, they are at the top of the A list and comfortable enough with the idea of being a movie star. Bradley is not the worst choice ever, he is bland but he has a good career, I think they gave him the title too early because he had a better 2012-2013 with two Oscar nominations.

They lose a lot of better choice for the title because they want an exclusive interview and photoshoot, and a lot of actors/singers think it’s a joke. That’s why Leonardo Dicaprio was never on the cover like Gosling. Leo being the sexiest man alive seemed obvious several ago, as he is Jack Dawson and Romeo (now he is just gross, imo). George, Brad, Matt, Johnny and Leonardo Dicaprio, they are all A list and popular with women. But he is a “serious actor” and Martin Scorsese’s muse so of course he doesn’t care, plus he hates the spotlight. Same with Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender, Christian Bale…. The other Chris (Evans) make more sense than Hemsworth with the success of captain america 2 but he is uncomfortable with being a heartthrob and movie star. It’s strange to me that Johnny Depp agreed two times to people magazine, he doesn’t seem that type….

They should just give the title to a celebrity even if they refuse to give an interview, like they did with JFK jr. So they could have Ryan, Leo or Prince Harry on their cover.
Ha, I love how I’m speculating about the people magazine’s SMA, whatever it’s not really serious….XD

  22. Pandora says:

Lenny Kravitz should have been People ‘s SMA 2014, imo. He is 50 and still got it, better looking and hotter than all these bland bitches (Bradley, Adam, Channing…).The timing is good too, he had a new album this fall and he was in a big and popular franchise (hunger games). It’s crazy that Lenny and Will Smith were never on their SMA cover. But it’s People magazine, so it’s mostly white ( and boring and bland). And they have been accused of racism at several occasions. How many non white celebrities were named their sexiest or most beautiful people over the years/decades?

Also there was a rumor that Jennifer Lawrence was their choice for “most beautiful people” in 2013 but she refused it. So Gwyneth Paltrow was their second choice, HA. Jennifer’s friend talked about it but the rumor wasn’t well know like when Gosling refused it and Bradley was their other option. It’s even more funny now with the Chris Martin connection between the two. You know, Goop hate to be the second choice, if anything she is the one who refuse to honor the peasants of her presence.

  23. ellesbelles says:

My appreciation for RG ends at his films. I think he makes smart project choices, tempering serious films with money making films. Perhaps this makes me look dumb, but I loved the notebook. I loved his chemistry with RMcA, and the story line was sweet, if predictable and manufactured. As a person though, meh, he doesnt make me tick. He’s nice looking in a basic non threatening way. I hope he continues to have a successful film career

  24. Bridget says:

What’s People supposed to say? We really like Hemsworth, and as soon as the first 3 people declined we knew he was our man!

  25. Lotta says:

I’m married an all, but I still WANT Ryan Gosling.
