Giada de Laurentiis stays so slender by never eating the food she cooks

wenn21418270

I watch a lot of Food Network and Cooking Channel programming. It’s not that I’m food-obsessed or cooking-obsessed, it’s just that watching people cook or talk about food is particularly relaxing to me, quite honestly. I have my favorite people, like Ina Garten and Tyler Florence. I’ve gotten used to Ree Drummond and the Farmhouse Rules woman (I like her because she looks like she eats her rich food). But I’ve sort of grown to dislike Giada de Laurentiis. I got increasingly tired of her ability to put cheese in every single dish that she makes. I got tired of her sometimes gross-looking faux-Italian food. And I got tired of miniscule portions, just because they seemed utterly unreasonable (especially when she was feeding groups of men!!). I’ve always wondered how Giada stays so tiny considering she seems to live on cheese, pasta and Nutella. And now Page Six has an interesting story about how little Giada actually eats.

Food Network chef Giada de Laurentiis refuses to eat her own food while filming her show and has a “dump bucket” on hand to spit it all out to stay pin thin, a show source reveals. The petite TV host, “Today” show contributor and cookbook author insists she stays a size 2 by eating everything in moderation.

She recently said how she stays so thin while cooking rich and tasty food “is the No. 1 question [from fans and interviewers], and the answer is, I eat a little bit of everything and not a lot of anything. Everything in moderation.” She said to health.com, “I know that’s really hard for people to understand, but I grew up in an Italian family where we didn’t overdo anything. We ate pasta, yes, but not a lot of it. Pasta doesn’t make you fat. How much pasta you eat makes you fat.”

But a source on her show tells us, “When Giada films her cooking show, she never eats. Never. When she is making drinks and food that she has to drink or eat, they have a dump bucket that is brought out the second they cut.” She spits it out, and then filming resumes, the source said.

“Sometimes when they are shooting her taking bites out of food like cake, they have an assistant take the bite (so you only see teeth and a mouth), and then they cut back to her taking an empty fork out of her mouth to resume filming.” The secret of why she is so skinny: “She does not eat at all while filming.” Other sources said it was commonplace to have a bucket on set for a food show.

Asked about the insider’s claim, Giada’s rep Stephen Huvane said: “That is absurd and completely false. She absolutely eats her own food while filming.” He added, “Giada tapes sometimes three episodes in one day, and they do multiple takes on a close-up of her eating. She doesn’t always eat and swallow every time, since they can do sometimes six to 10 takes with three episodes a day, and that would be like eating six to eight meals a day . . . The bottom line is, she most certainly does eat the food she prepares on the show, but does not always consume the whole dish, as that would be too much for most people to eat in one day.”

[From Page Six]

I think having a “dump bucket” or whatever is completely normal for any kind of film or TV show in which actors or chefs need to “eat” on camera. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if most chefs/cooks on The Food Network sometimes spit out their food or whatever. But it also wouldn’t surprise me if Giada rarely – if ever – really ate the food she cooks on set. But maybe that’s just me – the smell of all of that stupid cheese (that she puts in EVERY DISH) would make me nauseous (I’m not a cheese person, obviously).

I always thought she was small but I never realized just how tiny she is.

She could be Natalie Portman’s sister. They both have that same strained, tight smile.

Also, Kaiser do you just not like smelly cheese or are you a full-fledged cheese teetotaler?

  2. LadyMTL says:

A lot of the TV chefs don’t eat the food, or take one bite and then let the crew have the rest. It’s pretty standard practice, because otherwise they’d be living in the gym after every show, lol.

Heck, I ADORE cheese and even I would get sick of it eventually.

    • Asha says:

Of course chefs can’t eat all of the dishes they prepare. Still, pretending to eat a tiny bite and then spitting it out seem ridiculous to me. 3 small bites of food a day don’t turn you into Mama June.

  3. Hawkeye says:

If I had a cooking show, I would balloon because I would have zero willpower and I. Love. Cheese.

  4. I couldn’t believe she was in her late thirties/forties. She’s kind of annoying though–when I watched her show I hated the way she ate her food. It was just so annoying–she ate it down like a bird pecking at crumbs, off her spoon. And the faces she made at it was so annoying too.

    • QQ says:

Yeah No she gives you VERY annoying and fake perky extra flirty too much too loud … she is basically like the Julia Roberts of the cooking world

    • Kitten says:

Yeah she nibbles it. Bleh. Just get in there, you know? Stop trying to be so dainty.

  5. littlestar says:

I used to love watching her show (can’t seem to find it on TV anymore though, unfortunately). The thing that always stood out to me is that after she made a dish, she’d put a tiny bit in a little bowl and eat a few bites “for the camera”. I always thought, “So THAT is how she stays so thin, she just eats a few bites and that’s it”.

Side note: I was in Quebec City a couple of weeks ago on vacation and MY GAHD. THE CHEESE. It was soooo good! They do not mess around with their cheese in Quebec. Especially love the “Grey Owl” cheese Quebec is famous for.

    • Bridget says:

It’s never more than a teeny, tiny bite. And that includes while she’s cooking – what chef doesn’t taste their own food to make sure it’s turning out okay?

      • Brandii says:

Except that the best way to sample food is with a small bite, otherwise you overwhelm your senses and are unable to discern distinct flavorings (assuming that you are a professional). Regular folk who havent taken time to cultivate their palates may need larger bites I guess.

      • Bridget says:

I’m talking about the final product. Teeny tiny bites. As far as tasting as she cooks, it’s not like I’m saying you need to take out a ladle, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen her taste as she goes.

  6. Luciana says:

    She looks thin but healthy.

  7. mimif says:

Eh. I love to cook but by the end of it, I’m so over the sensory overload I don’t want to eat* any of it. I just like the “drinking wine with cooking” bit.

*however, someone else could make me a simple quesadilla, and I would think it was the best thing ever.

    • littlestar says:

I’m that way when it comes to baking. Like when I make cookies, I’ve eaten so much of the raw dough that by the time the cookies are done baking, I don’t even want to eat one LOL.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I find that, too, especially with something very fragrant. I think smelling it the whole time makes you less able to taste it. Sometimes after I make Thanksgiving dinner, I feel like it had no taste. Then the next day, I eat the leftovers, and it think, this is really good. If I say so myself.

    • Kitten says:

Totally. Everything looks better on someone else’s plate. I’m the type of assh*le who will pass on dessert only to eat half of my boyfriend’s crème brulee.

      • mimif says:

        *insèrt hand raisè herè*

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

My husband just sighs now. He’s used to it. His fault – he married an assh*le.

      • mimif says:

You are so not an a-hole, GoodNames. Unless you’ve got a sister wife you’re not telling us about…

      • FLORC says:

        Hahaha!
Same! I kind of lean more towards I have issues cleaning my plate. No matter how little I can’t finish.
My lovely husband is well aware whatever he orders must be approved by me also.

    • Bridget says:

You guys should really do it my way: don’t do the cooking and then eat all the food. It’s pretty great.

  8. ToodySezHey says:

If blind items can be believed, she is burning alot of calories with all the men she is cheating on her husband with, lol

    • Francesca says:

Yeah, she lost me at John Mayer.

    • Chris says:

Yeah, and the blinds certainly suggest that she gets her…ahem…protein in.

      • KayLastima says:

Yeah, she’s swallowing something all right, and it ain’t her own food.

When her tops kept getting lower and lower cut for her cooking segments and she started wearing those bandage wrap dresses everywhere I knew that she (and her producers) was selling a whopping side of something other than Italian food. I just can’t with this one anymore, her credibility has gone the way of the Dodo bird for me. Add to that the fact that I cringe for her husband when she makes him appear on her show. The poor guy has to pretend that she is not known as the BJ Queen.

    • Sea Dragon says:

^^ I doubt they could be confirmed but the blinds about her are .so. specific that I tend to believe them.

  9. Bridget says:

Cheese is awesome. It goes great with everything.

They tend to film Food Network shows in big blocks at once, so I can understand why it would get tedious to eat some of everything, especially Giada’s icky looking food. BUT I’ve watched a lot of Food Network over the years, and you can tell when people enjoy the food they’re eating, and frequently you’ll see the chef take more than one bite, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen Giada do. Have you heard the saying “don’t trust a skinny chef”? It’s because cooks need to taste their food as they go to make sure it’s properly seasoned and turning out okay. It’s why chef’s tend to carry some extra weight, especially as they get older. I’ve watched her show and I’m trying not to comment on her body, but it’s never seemed like she genuinely enjoys food.

    • FLORC says:

Not all cheese. Some is really smelly and gross. I love cheese, but some isn’t great.

I found a clip (won’t post for me) of her on a morning talk show. She’s eating hotdogs. 1 hot dog she puts in her mouth, but the clip cuts and her mouth is empty. Could just be editing. The 2nd hot dog she puts in her mouth, but when she pulls it away only a very small nibble has been taken. The bun and toppings remain untouched. She goes for another bite, but it’s from the side and looks to be the size of another nibble.

I bet she portion controls like crazy and exercises off what she does eat. I have no issue with this normally. She just seems out of place as a chef/show.

A nutritionist once told me never trust a fat nutritionist or a skinny chef. And that Giada had minimal chef training because there was money to pay for it. And her family is a hollywood/camera family.

      • Bridget says:

I love me some stinky cheese! Yum.

If Giada wants to be skinny that’s her own business. But would I ever want to eat her food? Goodness no. Being a chef implies a deep love of food and creating good food and eating good food. They don’t have to be slovenly or fat, but she just doesn’t seem to particularly enjoy food, and the teeny tiny forced bites she takes of the finished product makes me think that she doesn’t also taste as she cooks, which means that she doesn’t make sure that the dish is turning out correctly as she goes. Again, that’s part of why chefs tend to carry a little extra weight. I feel like she has a cooking show because she just wanted an avenue to a job on camera.

      • FLORC says:

Well said Bridget. I very much agree.

  10. RN says:

This isn’t even a story. Every set has a “dump bucket” on site, for the reasons stated above. Why should she have to stuff herself all day long? America is such a bizarre place sometimes – we insist on our female celebrities being skinny, but then we deride them when they take the necessary measures to do so. SMH.

    • Jackson says:

      Yeah, I’m with you.

    • kristen says:

Exactly! It reminds me of the “cool girl” speech from Gone Girl. That men want a woman who eats hamburgers and drinks beer, but still somehow stays a size 2.

    • Bridget says:

I am not a Giada fan (just my personal opinion) but its her own business if she wants to be skinny. Would I ever eat her food? No. But her show isn’t really about food, its about her giving a big, toothy grin and flashing a little cleavage.

And I totally agree with RN, remember the flak Adrianna Lima got when she said how she actually gets ready for the VS fashion show? There’s an expectation that celebrity women be absurdly skinny, but no one wants to admit that for 99.9% of the population that requires extreme measures and so we have to pretend that they pound Big Macs and do yoga 3 times a week.

    • Catriona says:

      Hear, hear!

  11. Kiddo says:

*Desperately trying to avoid rumor jokes.*

  12. Bridget says:

On another note, I cannot watch her show just for the sheer amount of cleavage she’s constantly showing. I am definitely her target audience.

  13. scout says:

She does swallow the the food she eats while cooking although just one big bite, I watch her show too. But I have seen some skinny cooks on TV put food in their mouth and cut off to another scene, I am sure there is a spit bucket there!
She looks very athletic here, naturally petite woman.

  14. FLORC says:

This isn’t new information. It’s been around for some time.
    3rd hand information, but…
A friend that has a friend that interned for food Network said this is the norm on many shows. A bucket is used to drop food into so the host doesn’t put it in their mouth and possibly get something in their teeth or mess up their lipstick.
Ofcourse, not everyone does this. Many do eat their food on the show.

It’s interesting to watch and see if she actually puts food in her mouth during 1 continuous shot. If it happens it’s during a larger show like a Today show display and what she eats are crumbs.
Unless it’s wine. I’ve heard she can pound away wine.

    • Bridget says:

I’ve watched a lot of Food Network over the years, and it’s interesting how it works. There’s certainly a range when it comes to quality ( though Sandra Lee remains on a level of her own) and I can’t imagine that everyone’s food is delicious.

I’ve moved away from FN as they’ve added in all their competitions and put more of a focus on their homegrown stars (I can’t with their “Next Food Network Star” series and I really can’t with their more recent Iron Chef choices). Top Chef for the win!

      • FLORC says:

I’ve moved away too. It’s all entertainment. You can’t learn how to cook from those shows. So much is preprepared and they don’t cover what they’re tossing in enough.
But Giada has always bothered me. The hanging out cleavage did not help. And her “mmm” sounds over breathy voice. No joke. Friends of mine came over. I was cleaning and the tv was on in the backround. They thought it was a very adult in nature show. And aparently when they saw the tv it was all cleavage leaning over a dish, but all they saw was cleavage and moans.

And I love Hell’s Kitchen! I cannot stand the last season of Master Chef. The winner made so many rookie mistakes and always was excused. Meanwhile there were more talented worth chefs that season that got sent home over really stupid judge decisions. I won’t rant. I joined twitter to rant so I won’t here.
        I’ve gone off topic.

      • original kay says:

I agree. I used to love cooking shows, when they actually cooked. I mean, I learned a lot about baking from “death by chocolate” (back in the early 90’s. That man could bake!
But they changed the camera angles to just plain weird (cracking an egg and zooming in, you know what I mean?) and I hate it. Nigella started it, I think, the strangle angles, rather then just being able to see them cook. It became entertainment, not teaching.

      • Tina Bashir says:

I miss Death by Chocolate by Marcel Desaulniers…He is an inspiration during my apprentice years as a pastry cook. Food Network have not been delivering quality programs. They have real chefs working behind the scenes developing recipes. They groom circus clowns to be on TV. The Food Network star is another joke. Bobby Flay I can understand as a judge, Giada?? how is she doing the taste test….Spit or Swallow???

  15. Gine says:

Ina forever! Her show is like Prozac. I just want her to feed me and pat me on the head and tell me store bought is fine.

  16. Soxfan says:

“…She doesn’t always eat and swallow every time…”
Sorry, that was the only thing I got from reading this. And, yes, I am going to hell.

    • Jaded says:

@Soxfan, no you’re not going to hell…you just spoke the “unspeakable” in this thread. I was trying to figure out a way of saying it but you did it perfectly. All I can add is she must have a great gag reflex.

  17. OTHER RENEE says:

I could never ever put a delicious bite of food in my mouth and spit it out. The world would go flat or Cumberbitches would completely disappear first.

  18. kri says:

I can’t stand her Tweety Bird chirpy-ness, and I know this is a stereotype, but I want my chefs to eat their own food and have a little meat on them. My Dad, (RIP) was an amazing cook. You could always tell it was the holidays because he started “Practice Meals & Experimental Cheesecakes” November 1st. Also, it is really gross to me to have an asst. bring you a bucket to spit food in and then take it away. Porta-vomitorium…ew.

  19. Reece says:

Tyler is my man! I used to try to think of food to pretend to destroy so I could try out for Food 911, just to get him in my house.
Probably shouldn’t have put that out there.

  20. Littlebowbee says:

I have a pal that had to work with her for an event. She mentioned that Giada was a grade A asshole to her own staff and the hotel’s staff. Not a nice person at all.

  21. Sam says:

Well, I suppose this is still better than all those, ya know, other rumors about her. So, yay?

I personally dislike watching her, only because her show seems to have a super-intense vibe of “look at how awesome my life is, everyone!” Even though the others have that too, it just seems to really ooze out of Giada more than most. And her teeth seem to hypnotize my cat.

    • Esmom says:

I know what you mean. And her teeth used to hypnotize my son. We haven’t watched in a couple years…I had no idea about the rumors. I gotta say, though, her marriage tended to strike me as an arrangement of some sort.

  22. Amelia says:

I’m sure she’s a really nice woman, but she bothers me when she pronounces Italian words. I know she speaks Italian and was born in Italy, but when she says words like “spaghetti” or “fettuccine”, her accent seems forced. She just sounds phony.

    • bella says:

      agreed.
her pronunciation of words like spaghetti is WRONG.
      she says spa-geee-tti.
drives me nuts, especially given that she is supposedly born in italy and comes from an italian family.
the geee part should be pronounced gay…
long “e” in italian is “ay”…
i’ve spent too much time on this, but it IRKS me…
i was a big giada fan when she 1st burst onto the FN scene.
      she was sweet and humble.
since, the cleavage in your face, the diva vibe…
      not a fan anymore.
but i’ve got to say her recipes – and i’ve made dozens of them – are delicious
i’m surprised to read others don’t think so.
ina garten and tyler florence are my longtime faves, though.
god…ina’s recipes, even the simple ones, are superb.
tyler’s, too, but mostly i like to stare at him 😉
and lidia, who isn’t on FN, is top notch.
her restaurant Felidia in NYC…nothing better.

      • vauvert says:

Oh my, yes, Felidia is an amazing restaurant and Lidia’s recipes are the best. The only bolognese recipe I ever make is hers, and I actually bought a ravioli maker to try and duplicate her Felidia dish of pear and pecorino ravioli with a white truffle sauce.
Never watch food shows, so no idea about Giada. She seems annoying but then a lot of TV personalities get on my nerves. My MIL tried to hook me on Rachel Ray and I could not stand her either, but obviously lots of people are fans.
The only celebrity chef whose cookbooks I ever tried other than Lidia’s are Martha and Nigella’s, and while I don’t care for either of their personalities, the recipes are great. When I want really yummy food, great videos and an easy going chef I use the blog of Chef John (discovered him on AllRecipes). No idea where he cooks in real life but his stuff has become my reference site for cooking.

      • bella says:

        so you’ve dined at felidia’s?!
i just love the food…it’s spectacular.
very expensive, but worth every penny and we only live once!
last time i ate there, i had a special – wild boar bolognese.
        OMG
my brother in law – who is THE fussiest eater and would never ever think of eating wild boar – ordered a 2nd bowl!
and, yes, martha has great recipes as does nigella (who i happen to adore.)
i will have to look up chef john’s blog.
want to note, while i am a FN regular, i have found some of the BEST recipes on epicurious.com.
        best stuffed mushrooms ever.

  23. KinChicago says:

Waiting for a post featuring commentary on Tyler Florence’s waistline. None? Gee. Wonder if that is sexist.

  24. bettyrose says:

I don’t know her show, and I totally want to hate on her after reading this thread but G–D this lady has will power of steel. She needs some props for that.

  25. Adrien says:

I wonder if Guy Feiri eats the food on his restaurant’s menu?

  26. NewWester says:

All I got from this article is that she has the same representative: Stephen Huvane as Goop, Jennifer Ansiton, Sandra Bullock. That man certainly gets around! I would actually like to see a lifestyle show hosted by Giada and Goop!!!

  27. Amelie says:

I personally watch Lidia Bastianich and she definitely looks like she eats what she cooks. She enjoys what she eats too! I don’t understand why some cooks don’t eat what they make…Re: weight issues, research is showing that a little over weight is better for you especially in the 60+ years. Also women need calcium through out their lives somehow thru milk, cheese, yogourt etc for bone strength, cardiovascular health etc. Re: cooking shows, when one of my nieces was young she just loved the Frugal Gourmet, I think she found it calming as Kaiser stated.

    • RN says:

Americans get plenty of calcium yet lack the necessary co-factors to metabolize it. That’s why osteoporosis still is a problem. Also, it’s not better to be overweight. That data can be interpreted in many ways, and it’s too long to get into here. What is true is that most overweight people are overfed and undernourished. Their excess weight comes not from eating nourishing, whole foods but from eating processed food that causes inflammation.

Excess weight will always put a strain on both the internal organs and on the muscles and bones of the body. Nobody is thriving in the US from having extra weight – people are just getting sicker and sicker. I’m a 20 year veteran of both the healthcare system and a practitioner of nutrition. Twenty years ago, we would have maybe one “big boy” wheelchair in the entire hospital. Now, all of the equipment has to be oversized to accommodate the increasing girth of patients.

      • bettyrose says:

Semantics. The studies recommend being at the upper edge of your healthy weight range, not overweight (I.e. above your healthy weight range). In any case, it’s just as hard on your body to be underweight (I.e. below your healthy range) but that advice will never be heeded as long as this image of the female ideal exists.

      • Bridget says:

Don’t forget the lack of weight bearing and impact exercise, both of which improve bone density.

      • Valois says:

RN, so you have a link to any sources discussing how/why that data could be misinterpreted?

      • Amelie says:

        Hi RN:
I work in healthcare too…and would argue that the average American diet comes from processed, high salt foods. I understand calcium can be found in veggies like spinach and collard greens and that other things like vitamin D need to be present in order for Calcium to be processed. The average American diet doesn’t include many veggies.
Re: studies, the longitudial study of Leisureworld residents is yielding very good information on old age based on 20+ years of data. Sixty Minutes has covered some of the findings. One of the findings is that it is better to be a little overweight at 60+ rather than underweight.
In any case, I was raised in an ethnic home (central european country of origin) and was taught that food makes you “strong like bull.” We ate big, homemade meals and lots of cheese and milk. I also played gobs of sports in gradeschool…my bone density tests were off the charts. My MD stated, “you’ll never have osteoporosis,” Am I as thin as a certain waiflike humanitarian lawyer who just married an aging male actor? Ah no, and I sure don’t want to be. Food is one of the great gifts we have been given and I intend to enjoy it! And that’s why I love Lidia(not Giada).

    • Lisa says:

Lidia is pretty awesome. Her food can be too rich, though. But I’d rather watch her than Giada, because she’s actually nice to her family.

  28. Carrie says:

I was given two of her cookbooks as a gift, and they’re great. I agree that she’s annoying on camera, but the books offer yummy recipes. My six year-old son thinks she’s pretty and now will eat just about anything if I tell him it’s from her cookbook. I use it shamelessly and for that, I cannot dislike her 😉

  29. anne_000 says:

I tried one of her recipes and it was really bland. I read the reviews for her recipes and other people also complained about how bland her food is.

I read the caption of an RO article yesterday that Khloe K sprays Windex on her food in order to stay skinny. I’ve read various ways skinny people spike their food (ex: over-salt it) to make their food terrible to eat. So I’m wondering if GL purposely under-seasons her food just so it will be easier not to eat.

  30. may23 says:

Fantastic body! However, she has a huge head. Not that she can do anything about it but because she keeps so super slim her head looks lollypop-ish.

  31. Bobby says:

Yeah dump buckets are tots normal- DUH. Do you know how many takes they do for TV and Film??
I’m also size 2 (sometimes zero- vanity sizing!) and Italian and eat a bit of everything. I don’t understand why that’s hard to believe. It’s petty much what everyone else does around the globe?

  32. Mrs. K says:

I don’t know this person. Never heard of her. Reading your comments + few blind items – TV show, chef & s*x reminded me of one character from TV.
TV show Californication – nymphomaniac TV chef ” Chloe Metz”!

  33. Christy says:

Aww – Poor Giada. I agree, over the years, her teeth have gotten a little too white, her smile a little too huge and her cleavage a little too prominent but she generally seems like a pretty down to earth person. I have 4 of her cookbooks (!) and while I don’t love everything, the vast majority of her recipes are really good and can be put together quickly after work, etc.

    • Mean Hannah says:

I’ve only watched her show a handful of times, and only accidentally, but even from my limited viewing, I noticed that her teeth got whiter, her smile bigger, and her cleavage more prominently displayed. I dismissed her for doing a show on making bruschetta and have never made any of her recipes. Also, all of the straight men I know who watch FN and/or have watched her shows think she is hot. With that said, this story would be a non-issue if she wasn’t so skinny. Dump bucket is pretty standard and I bet even Ina uses it, too.

    • Christy says:

I used to watch her show quite a bit . . . I think I tapered off after I had to explain to my then-3 year old that it was OK that her teeth weren’t as white as Giada’s because nobody’s natural teeth are that white!

  34. Jaded says:

She’s a shameless famewhore, her recipes are pretty dull, she takes every opportunity to flash her cleavage and s*x it up during a supposedly wholesome show, has a pretty well-known reputation as a serial philanderer with a sad wimp of a husband, and is generally a bit of a nasty piece of work according to people who have worked on her show. I take a pass on her cookbooks as the Grocery Bags say.

  35. paranormalgirl says:

That woman has a full set of shark teeth. She frightens me.

I remember watching last year’s Food Network Thanksgiving Live show. She was so obnoxious – talking over Ina Garten and pretty much everyone. Do not diss my Ina. We have a place not too far from Ina and jeffrey’s and have some friends in common. Some day I am going to get myself invited to one of her soirees!

  36. Carrie says:

The older I get the less I like cheese. Pregnancy has only added to that. Husband and stepson will eat cheese on anything and I’m just sitting here like no thanks.

  37. HoustonGrl says:

Never take cooking advice from a skinny woman! Just kidding. In all seriousness, as someone who obsesses over cooking shows and cooks religiously, I gave a few of her recipes a shot. They’re ok, nothing extraordinary. Much of it is only good because it’s packed with cheese or oil, not because it has rich flavors or interesting spices. Erm yea, and there’s no way she eats what she cooks. She’s a pencil.

  38. Catriona says:

This comment is a little OT since it isn’t about Giada but about Ina Garten. I see Ina getting so much love and I used to love her too, I loved Barefoot Contessa and especially loved her after her 30 Rock cameo.

But y’all hear about how she turned down a dying cancer patients request to meet her because she said she was too busy? That makes Giada look like an angel in comparison, if it is true.

    • FLORC says:

BC lost me there too. He watched her show while getting chemo and in his bed recovering. Her food looked so good to him. And the woman refused because she had a few stops to make before a vacation. She was near him and was given much notice, but declined anyways.. Grrr.
What gets me is when they can’t make it in person they find other ways of reaching them. Sending another or calling. Christian Bale couldn’t make the trip so he called the little boy and made his week!

    • M.A.F. says:

I always felt you needed to be in tuxedo to eat her food. There is just an air about her I don’t like.

  39. Veronica says:

I get that the food bucket is probably necessary, but it actually hints at why I could never sit through those shows. There was always something vaguely sickening at the thought of making all that good only to waste it. Not when so many don’t have enough.

  40. Kayt says:

I’m a professional pastry chef, and I have to taste test everything I make. I consume probably 1,000 calories a day in just taste testing. I’m also 5’8″ and 125 pounds. I work out daily to keep the “test tasting” in check. It is also fairly common for me to “spit out food”. So, yes, the bucket concept is definitely not news to me. I support it.

  41. eliza says:

How many starving children could be fed by what she spits out every year?

  42. original kay says:

I didn’t know they used “dump buckets”.

what a horribly wasteful society 🙁

  43. embee says:

If she actually ate big spoonfuls, not just spit out bird pecks, she might be overweight. Then people would tell her she looks stupid taking big bites and to take pecks and spit. I’m sure she eats plenty but doesn’t want to wolf down her days food on just sampling

  44. Lisa says:

I always joke about how much food we eat as Italians, but really, we have self control. My immediate family has always been thin. My dad isn’t, but he eats differently than the rest of us. I’d never suggest Giada doesn’t eat, but she needs to tone down the teeth and over-enunciating.

  45. Lisa says:

Anyone remember when she flipped at Todd’s friend for eating a whole potato? They’d been out biking all day, and she gave them these little steaks and potato halves. The guy reached for another and she squeaks indignantly, “TWO POTATOES?!?”

  46. word says:

I used to watch her show when I had the Food Network. I used to get distracted by her big head. Seriously it’s really out of proportion to her tiny body. I know it’s not her fault but once you notice the disproportion it’s hard to concentrate on anything else. A lot of wine tasters spit the wine out too. I guess it’s part of the job? I don’t know but I have seen other chefs swallow their food on shows.

  47. Tarsha says:

I have never even heard of her before until I saw her name on here tonight. I cannot help but read her name as Giardia every time I see this headline.

  48. qtpi says:

Must be a thing with some people in their every day lives. I have a a cousin that was a professional athlete years ago and he married a young lady that we witnessed only ate strawberries for breakfast. And her kids tell their grandparents that she chews food and spits it out into a napkin (in front of them!)

  49. Jayna says:

She’s slender, but healthy looking. Her arms are filled out and no bony shoulders. She’s very short with a big head, so always had a bit of a an odd look to her, but cute.

I imagine they all if doing multiple takes don’t eat every bite shooting all day doing a cooking show. I don’t see the story or scandal. If I think about it, that’s about what I see on every cooking show, taking a bite of something. It’s not like they are sitting down to a meal.

Since when did it become evil to stay slender? My mother never overate. She ate desserts, all kinds of foods, but never had big portions on her plate, and was a slender woman, not skinny, and was never one to sit for long, always moving and doing stuff around the house. She was a little bigger during childbearing years. My mother was a big cook and baker but had self-control. My father had no self-control with food. Most of my life I’ve been slender, and when I haven’t been several times, it’s because I was eating A LOT and drinking lots of soda, junk food, and I packed on the pounds and it distributed in my hips and thighs and I was miserable, truthfully.

  50. tabasco says:

Giada is one of the people that makes me turn the channel immediately. IMO, she is a complete bullsh*t artist. In addition to the above-mentioned stupid-ass way she manages to speak completely normal accent-free English *except* when saying any remotely Italian word, she likes to say how she never wanted to be in front of the camera and never wanted to derive success from her grandfather’s name/legacy. Except DeLaurentiis is not her father’s name. She uses her grandfather’s name. Have also heard from many that she is a first class mean girl.
