Kendall Jenner on balancing career & family: ‘I feel like Hannah Montana’

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner was profiled in the New York Times about her rising modelling career. This isn’t the first time NYT has interviewed her. She made a cameo appearance in from a June 2013 profile where Kendall shyly muttered a few words and was described as “aggressively managed.” Things are different now. Kendall’s landing big-time contracts and walking runways at fashion weeks across the globe. Karl Lagerfeld just handed her an ad campaign, and many wonder if Chanel will be the next offer.

Kendall’s been talking a lot lately, which means she’s reluctantly crawling out of her shell. She talked about working hard for her career, and a lot of you called her out on it. Kendall also talked about her competitive Kardashian upbringing (which everyone seems to have won except for Rob the black sheep). All Kardashians are “workaholics, says Kendall. This NYT interview is even weirder. She talks about her “double life” in terms of Hannah Montana. Let’s do this:

On balancing modelling & KUWTK: “It’s definitely two different worlds. I feel like Hannah Montana. But it’s fun.”

Modelling is a lifelong dream: “I would literally sit at home and have my friends take pictures of me on my little Canon camera that my mom gave me for Christmas. Obviously, the show was me being in front of a camera. It’s just something that I’ve kind of always been around.”

She’s trying to rebrand: “We had to be very strategic and specific to really have people take me seriously and not mess around.”

On shaking the Kardashian reputation: “Some people are hesitant with me, and they just worry or wonder for a second. But then when the chance gets taken …”

[From NYT]

Well. At least Hannah Montana left the stage and returned to a “normal” life. Kendall leaves her modelling gigs to spend time with one of the least normal families in the world. I guess KUWTK is so familiar to Kendall that maybe she thinks they’re normal. The journo describes Kendall as having a “daffy sweetness.” The NYT also speaks with Oliver Rousteing, creative director at Balmain, who says, “Kendall’s really communicating to a lot of girls. You know, like those models in the 90s, Claudia, Naomi.” Ooooh boy.

My mind is boggled. I have no idea how this person is taken seriously. How is it impressive or desirable that her vapidity (my new word!) and vanity are propagated through social media and replicated in impressionable young girls?

These people are responsible for the looming zombie apocalypse of blindly materialistic, brainless masses shuffling through life looking for any reflective surface.

  2. Kara says:

She looks pretty in that second picture. I am going to be nice today.

  3. NewWester says:

Funny she mentioned Hannah Montana, look at how Miley Cyrus basically “killed” and walked away from that character with her twerking and crazy behaviour. Is Kendall preparing her fans for some kind of radical change?

  4. Izzy says:

I wonder if shr knows that Hannah Montana is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER?! I wonder if she knows what fictional means?

Is he really comparing her to actual supermodels. Or is he trying to compare her supposed influence/reach to the 90’s supermodels and not doing a very good job at it?

    • Adrien says:

My Mom told me she looks just like your 80s supermodel, even likened her to Janice Dickinson and Gia Carangi.

      • Talie says:

I agree with that — she’s got that old-school Cosmo look those 80s models did.

      • OriginalTessa says:

I think she looks like Gia and Janice, a little Phoebe Cates. She’s very late 70’s early 80’s in her aesthetic.

      • cr says:

I’m old enough to remember that era, and really, to me, she doesn’t haven’t that ‘it’ factor. She’s pretty but not in that interesting, stand-out sort of way.

      • nikial says:

I don’t think she compares to someone like Gia. Gia was gorgeous and Jenner is just average looking.
Jenner has the face for something like a prom store or cheap makeup. She doesn’t have the face of Chanel or Givenchy. I can guarantee you she would be rejected repeadtly if it wasn’t for Kanye West and his connections.

      • swack says:

In the first pic, she looks like Wendy from the Addams Family.

    • whatsmyname? says:

“Kendall’s really communicating to a lot of girls” Sounds like he is talking about influence and her being able to reach so many young girls.

  6. ketjo says:

Really, ……….K Klan really needs to get better PR people these are getting pretty hacky . but then they are shooting for a audience of little girls aged 12 to 17 who still believe in fairy tales…..and remember Hannah Montana and not Miley Cyrus …..

  7. Mia V. says:

Olivier just got a check from Kanye to say this bull****.

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Well good luck. I find her uninteresting, but I hope she can break away from her family and have her own life.

  9. Hissyfit says:

At least she’s actually working though. Her younger sister needs to find another hobby beside wearing trashy outfit and posing sexy on instagram.

    • word says:

I think the family is just waiting for Kylie to turn 18 and then she will take the “Kim route”…just you watch.

  10. Mzizkrizten says:

What the hell did Claudia and Naomi communicate to girls in the 90s besides “I’m so pretty and perfect and you’ll never measure up”?!

    • Wren33 says:

Exactly. Which is why, personally, I don’t understand why people get so offended by the idea of her as a successful model. I mean, I grew up in the 80s and supermodels were just models, in that I don’t remember them being famous for anything other than being pretty and getting interest in their brand. If Kendall can take pictures and get publicity, what is the problem? It is not like she is being pushed as the next Senator or something. I am not denigrating the skills it takes to be a successful model, but I don’t really get why the age of supermodels was supposed to be this great thing for fashion or society.

  11. Talie says:

Cara Delevingne has more personality, but she also used her social media status to bump herself up the food chain. Like Kendall, she modeled unsuccessfully for a couple years before she started blowing up on Instagram. Marc Jacobs also rejected her initially — describing her as a gremlin.

    • nikial says:

Yes Cara did have help from her family, but I do think she has some modelling talent, and she does have a personality, although I don’t like how she hangs around Jenner and Kim and Kanye. Jenner has no talent, no personality, no good looks. Her only claim to fame is being the sister of a sex tape wh00re and prostitute. Her younger sister looks like a plastic surgery addict already and she is like what 16, 17? Terrible.

      • Lex says:

Calm down Nikial; who are you really mad at? Those bad feelings will eat away at you from the inside. Be happy!

  12. Dawn says:

I find her uninteresting and she basically has only one look. They can change her hair all they want and they can change her makeup too but there is always just that one look. For being only 19 and doing what she says she always wanted to do she still has dead eyes. Nothing is there, no joy, no pain, just dead. I think everything she says is basically very scripted and rehersed by PMK. She works hard, living between two worlds in modeling and in reality television, people don’t trust her at first until she proves them wrong and on and on. What happened to distancing herself from the kind of people her family is? I say in a few years she and Kylie will be hanging out with Kim in Dubai making some real money from those rich old hypocrit men who live there.

    • BengalCat2000 says:

Agreed. She’s pretty but bland. A chameleon, she isn’t. I’m biased b/c I dislike her family so much, but I don’t see intelligence or worldliness, or self-awareness behind those eyes. But maybe she’ll grow into it.

  13. swack says:

Until she lasts 5 – 10 years in this job, she does not have a career. If she ever gets bored with it she will be out in a hearbeat.

  14. Gina says:

I think she is the least offensive of the family. I am still surprised Estee Lauder chose her, simply because she is one of them, and keeps company with Chris Brown, et al. I think she has to choose being taken seriously over being brought up on a reality show. Reality is a big question mark to this family.

    • nikial says:

She tried to walk out of a restaurant without paying the bill and when the waitress confronted her, Jenner threw money at her face. How is that not offensive? She is a plain jane and without Kanye West’s connections nobody would hire her. He probably blackmailed or abused someone at Estee Lauder to give her this gig. There are so many more beautiful , nicer girls then her and yet they choose this average looking, no-talent, rude, spoiled moron as their face? No thanks. I will no longer be supporting them just like how I no longer support Vogue. I am glad Vogue is in the dumps and Anna Wintour is the laughing stock of the fashion world. Kim is nothing but a glorified porn star and is paid the same way a prostitute is paid.

  15. D says:

What does “daffy sweetness.” mean? (english is not my first language 🙂 )

    • swack says:

I took that as being goofy (not a bad thing – I tell my grandkiddos that they are goofy all the time) but has a sweet personality. That’s how I read it.

  16. some bitch says:

And just like Miley Cyrus, Jenner got her start thanks to nepotism.

  17. Susie Q says:

When did Kendull get married and have a family that she has to balance with her modelling?
    What a stupid family.

  18. FingerBinger says:

So the Kardashians are the Munsters and Kendall is Marilyn?

  19. Miss m says:

Kendall is not that interesting and if she wanted to stay away from people comparing her to kardashian she. Old easily say: I am Jenner, some of my siblings are kardashian… So yes, she does like to use the association when favors her.

  20. CAD says:

I actually interpreted the Hannah Montana reference to mean that she works like a ‘normal’ person at her modelling job, then goes to her crazy jet-setting life surrounded by glamour and money. From what I know (not that much, admittedly), modelling is hard work. Which is not to say that her ‘normal’ job looks anything like that of most people though!

  21. Joh says:

She does not have a very open, expressive face,
Her name and buzz will continue to get her work.

  22. Bridget says:

Modeling has been about who you know for the last couple of decades, it’s part of why there are so few truly memorable girls out there any more. If you meet the physical requirements, having someone get you in the door is one of the biggest issues because it’s not like the job is really that difficult.

  23. rudy says:

Kendell has no expression in her face, whether she is striding down the runway, posing for instagram or papped. Her fame is Andy Warhol’s 15 minutes.

Cara D. has a ton of life in her face. Every photo is a different expression. She has her own unique sense of fashion and has already involved herself in film. She is obviously young and into the hangout scene, but she has more personality in her little finger than Kendall will ever have.

  24. samab says:

i appreciate the fact that she ‘s actually doing something not too pretentious. She is selling her image in a very tasteful way compared to her sisters, not pretending to be more than what she is,a very pretty girl.
