Anne Hathaway & Brian Cranston dodge weird Brangelina questions

There’s this rumor going around that Anne Hathaway is trying to be Angelina Jolie. I had never heard the rumor until today, but apparently the rumor was out there. It bothered Anne Hathaway so much she felt she had to respond with an explicit denial. Anne says she loves Angelina, but is only trying copy Angelina’s approach to fame. Showbiz Spy has more:

Anne Hathaway has denied she models herself on Angelina Jolie.

The Devil Wears Prada actress – who recently revealed a fake tan left her “looking like an orange zebra” – says although she admires the Tomb Raider star, she only tries to copy Jolie’s attitude to fame.

She explains, “I love Angelina, I think she is beautiful – but it is not my aim to be just like her. I admire what she does greatly. She uses her fame in a good way – and that is what I hope to do too: to make a difference.”

“Aside from getting a nice table at a nice restaurant and occasionally getting free clothes, fame can begin to seem very empty. And if you do not take certain steps to use it for something good it can really consume you and make you completely self-obsessed.”

From Showbiz Spy

Of course this is being billed as “Anne Hathaway Hates Angelina, Wants Her Dead”. Whatever. What probably happened is Anne got a weird question about Angelina for some reason, and was trying to be polite.

Brian Cranston
The same thing happened to Brian Cranston, the dad from “Malcolm in the Middle” and the meth dealer in AMC’s “Breaking Bad”. He sat down with Esquire for an interview, and the Esquire guy questioning him is kind of a tool. The way the question and answer is worded, it makes it sound like Cranston thinks Brad Pitt is an utterly untalented actor. Which Cranston really might think, but the wording is weird. Here’s an excerpt from the interview:

ESQ: Actors who say they have techniques for “going to their dark place” are bullshitting, right?
BC: Actors are inherently self-centered. We’re trained to focus on who I am. What do I want? Who is in my way? How do I get this? That’s how we’re trained. Unfortunately, that sometimes spills over into real life. But it’s all very subjective. You just try to portray someone beyond the surface, the different layers.

ESQ: So why can you do that and, say, Brad Pitt can’t?
BC: Talent has something to do with it. Opportunity. You will not have an acting career without luck. How can you prepare for that? I love acting because it’s empowering. It empowers me.

ESQ:Who are some actors you admire? Sorry, I hate that question.
BC: Then why are you asking?

ESQ: Because I’m trying to figure out how the guy who played the dad on a cartoony comedy ended up the guy on this show, and those role models might help shed some light.
BC: Well, look at Michael Chiklis: He was on Daddio, and he’s a very good actor, and he had an opportunity for The Shield. Most actors have the chops to do it, but are they going to get an opportunity? Denis Leary. Ted Danson on Damages. Look at what he does.

ESQ: I still don’t accept him as anyone but Sam Malone.
BC: Jason Alexander, a friend of mine, says they will be inexorably tied to those characters. It’s the other side of the double-edged knife. He’s doing everything he can to not associate with that role. I’m very fortunate Malcolm wasn’t as successful as Seinfeld.

From Esquire Magazine

The Esquire guy is a douche, right? The reason Jason Alexander is tied to his “Seinfeld” role is because he’s not a very talented actor and he got lucky once. Ted Danson, on the other hand, is enormously talented, and has had a varied and challenging career post-“Cheers”. I do think Brian Cranston will probably go more the Ted Danson route in his career. He just won an Emmy for his role on “Breaking Bad” and the show is a word-of-mouth hit. But he probably won’t be working with Brad anytime soon.

Cranston didn’t say Brad Pitt couldn’t, the interviewer did. I think Cranston answered the question just referring to himself and ignored the unecessary Brad Pitt reference.

Obviously you can have a journalism career without a lot of talent also.

  2. bite me says:

    wtf

  3. Sauronsarmy says:

WTF kind of questions are those? I agree he does sound like a tool, but this is Esquire, so I guess I shouldn’t expect any better?

  4. Codzilla says:

I think I need to read the interview again, because at first glance, it didn’t seem all that bad. Maybe I just need more caffeine.

  5. bite me says:

then again would these interviews be a gosip site if brangelina name wasn’t involve

  6. L says:

Jason Alexander “got lucky once” ? Actually he IS a talented actor and entertainer. He is also a diverse actor, having had multiple roles in movies, television, and on stage. He was great in Pretty Woman, he made me hate who his character was. He was riot on Seinfeld for eleven years. He has been in many Broadway shows and won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. These are a few among many of his accomplishments….Which one was it that “he got lucky once” with?

  7. I Choose Me says:

ESQ: Because I’m trying to figure out how the guy who played the dad on a cartoony comedy ended up the guy on this show, and those role models might help shed some light.

That right there is the part where I began to agree 100% that the interviewer is a prick. Maybe he didn’t mean to be, maybe it’s how he worded it but that’s how he comes across.

  8. teri says:

Anne is a sweet girl just leave her alone. I love Angelina and Anne and both are great actresses.

  9. Ned says:

Kaiser- according to the text he didn’t even mention Brad or even respond to discussing Brad’s (lack of) talent.

It was only the interviewer. Read it again.

and “Jason Alexander… not a very talented actor”?!

    He was brilliant.

  10. geronimo says:

Agree with L here on Jason Alexander – really talented actor and not just as the piece of genius that was George! Haven’t seen Breaking Bad (which sounds really good) but loved this guy in Malcolm in the Middle so glad he’s doing well.

Fairly dull-witted line of interviewing from Esquire and really don’t get why so many interviewers lately seem to use Pitt and Angelina Jolie as some sort of benchmark when it comes to acting?? Very odd.

  11. Kaiser says:

The Jason Alexander thing is obviously just my opinion. I think the guy’s a talentless hack, but obviously he has a loyal fan base, so my bad.

As far as the Brad Pitt thing – I’ve re-read it a couple of times, and I still think Cranston’s response is up to interpretation. He’s either keeping the conversation just on his work, or he’s implicitly agreeing with the Esquire guy that Brad’s not a good actor.

  12. sissoucat says:

I’m kind of “meh” on this story too.

Still nice to see that these actors are not selling themselves out for a little tabloid press.

I don’t think Brian Cranston will have any trouble with Brad Pitt, and Jason Alexander is a terrific and versatile actor. “Seinfeld” the show wouldn’t have had any success, if it had been based on Seinfeld’s acting abilities !

  13. Ophelia says:

God, I’m glad I’m not the only one who can’t stand Jason Alexander! I also didn’t get Seinfeld either. I have no idea what people were laughing about. But I seriously am the only person I’ve ever met that didn’t like Seinfeld, so I’m prepared to stand alone, lol.

  14. Codzilla says:

Geronimo: Definitely check out “Breaking Bad” if you get a chance. It’s outstanding.

  15. geronimo says:

Thanks, codzilla, I’ve just had a google and a read about it and it sounds really really good. Apparently it’s available in the UK but on some cable channel I don’t have. Hope one of ‘my’ channels picks it up.

  16. Ned says:

While Anne is clearly not thinking very highly of Angelina, which is evident by her talking about Angelina’s BEAUTY and not really commenting about how she feels about Angelina’s TALENT or ACTING ABILITY.

Brian- on the other hand, is simply staying professional and wanted to direct the attention to his line of work and his view.
He didn’t want to talk about other actors, so much and gave a couple of names only after the interviewer didn’t let go.

I personally think Brad has done some lame work in the past couple of years and his performances were much better in the past, and I would absolutely support Brain had he conveyed such oppinion, but he didn’t.

He came to talk about his work, not Brangelina.

  17. Jane says:

Kaiser- Do you think Brad Pitt is more talented than Jason Alexander?

  18. Trillion says:

That Cranston guy is so amazing in Breaking Bad. I’m glad he’s getting some accolades for it. It’s a harrowing, difficult character to play and he really pulls it off. The fact that this sweet yet nihilistic expert speed cooker is such a flip from the hen-pecked dad on Malcom just adds to how impressive his acting is.

  19. malivich says:

:} ah what people see and what they hear are often not the same as the reality.
Women always compliment each other on appearance, it is but an acknowledgement of time and effort well spent. Anything other then a compliment is concidered catty.
Anne in her comment was doing nought but acknowledging Angelina’s charitable works. Something that in the movie industry is nearly always over looked as not having a marketable advantage like a good tell all scandal.

  20. RAN says:

Brad Pitt is no where NEAR as talented an actor as Jason Alexander – or many other actors actually. The difference is, he was pretty once – whereas people like Jason A and, say, Michael Edwards were not.
