I watched this last night. I love Colbert (had a crush on him since Strangers With Candy. His chemistry with Obama was awesome. And the Prez was hilarious!!!!

The show was filmed at George Washington university-it’s 5 blocks from the White House. Obama could have walked there.
Appealing to young people is a important part of every presidency. Getting the youth excited about the process is a good thing. Hence why you see senators and other congresspeople on the show as well.
I guess he got the message across to the kids.
As for the busyness of US presidents, just watch their hair turn white in office.
Yeah. Interacting with the people is part of the job. An important job. To me, this is like the modern version of FDR’s fireside chats or Bill Clinton on MTV. They’re trying to reach a young audience, and lots of young people watch Colbert.
If you want to defend Obama going on Colbert, fine. But please don’t link it to President Roosevelt’s fireside chats during the Great Depression. The comparison is ridiculous and historically offensive.

No it’s not. It’s culturally comparable. Leaders use the media and means of the time to get their message across. Trust me there were those who felt the same way about FDR.
I was all prepared to be negative about this because I’m not crazy about what may seem like a stunt by any president BUT it seemed to work to me. It made important points and did it in an amusing way without being disrespectful to the Office. Obviously there are those who don’t want the President’s message to be delivered in any capacity so they are going to complain no matter how it’s delivered. If you want people to listen you do have to get with the times.
Bush took every August of his presidency off…Every single August for 8 years….just saying…
And for that we can only give thanks! Imagine what shape the country would have been in at the end of his watch, if he had actively governed eight more months! I wish he would have have taken the whole eight years off, I think the country would have been in better shape.
Funny that those who think Obama is such a bad President are upset that he is taking time off.
I loved Obama on Colbert, and as the mom of those the age of his target audience, I think it was a brilliant strategy to get the word out. History will remember him as a great President, and his opposition party as obstructionists.
Its an hour out of his day to reach out to the people who put him in office. And it only happens once in a long while. Why would this be a big deal for you?

I agree with Brandii that it isn’t a big deal. The Presidency is something that follows the person around 24/7. They are never unreachable. They are never truly on “vacation”.
I don’t think it is good for the mental health of a person making such important decisions to be too focused on the nitty gritty every moment of every day. That leads to poor decision making and burn out.
Additionally, this was information wrapped in a cute Colbert-y package. The age range that watches Colbert is very important to the ACA, and the open enrollment period ends on Dec. 15th. I think this was a wise move wrapped up in fun.

Well, I’m French too (and American!) and don’t really love what either president is doing. Because we live in France we are assumed to sign off on every foolish thing Hollande does? Would you have liked it if French people did that to you during the Bush years?

Lol, presidents aren’t chained to the desk 24/7. They can take the occasional day off, though in this case, it wasn’t so much a day off as reaching out to a specific audience, one that is often receptive to Democratic ideas. Politicians do it all time. It’s been a very long time since we saw Obama do it, but it makes sense to try to spur young people into action given their low turnout rates and the upcoming 2016 elections.
I may not agree with the guy’s policies, but he’s always been pretty clever and charismatic with an audience. This is a smart PR appealing to a key demographic.

The torture report reveals findings that have happened since 9/11/01. In other words, torture that happened under GW Bush’s watch.
This is why Republicans have generally opposed the release of the report, because they thought the torture techniques resulted in the US attaining valuable information.
President Obama, the agency’s activities were “contrary to our values,” and pledged in a statement “to use my authority as president to make sure we never resort to those methods again.”
You know what else came out?
The GOP’s report that found no intelligence failure or cover-up in the deadly Benghazi embassy attacks. Speaking of having nothing to do, Obama’s name being officially cleared won’t stop Boehner and Graham from wanting to launch a NEW investigation.
But yeah, let’s blame Obama…because you know….

all done to simply fire up their ever-shrinking base of extremists who only want to block this president at EVERY turn. they even said that right after he was elected to his first term…that their PRIMARY action would be to block him as much as possible and make him a one term prez.

Politics are 90% PR game. Regardless of how I feel about his policies, it’s a very smart move to tap into a demographic that often underperforms at the polls but tends to lean more liberal. The primaries for the 2016 election are going to be underway in less than a year, so he’s basically setting the stage for a predecessor. A year removed from office, he’s in a lame duck position where policies are concerned, anyhow. Republicans just took Congress, so they’re just biding time at this point.
I liked it. As was noted, every President has used whatever medium that was current during his time in office for PR purposes. Sometimes their minions carry water for them via Sunday talk shows, sometimes they use newspapers or magazines articles to employ their voice and message, and sometimes they themselves “take it to the people” outside of the traditional means of national press conference. So, to me, President Obama being on a talk show is no more different than when Bush did it, Clinton on Arsenio, and others before him aka FDR. And it won’t be any more different than when the next several presidents do it. They are selling relatable. No more. No less.
