Angelina Jolie talks Christmas plans, Hillary Clinton & military interventions

Angelina Jolie has some new interviews out, and I have no idea if she did these weeks ago, before the pox on her house, or whether she has reporters coming to her home while she’s recovering from the chicken pox, or perhaps she’s giving phone interviews while she’s recovering. This NYDN piece suggests that the reporter was actually in the room with Jolie, so take that as Brangeloonie Proof of something. You can read the full NYDN piece here. Some highlights:

Filming By the Sea with Brad: “It brought us closer… The last time we worked together, it was a lighter movie. So sharing something in a deep artistic way, it’s something I think is necessary for artistic couples. I hadn’t realized how good it would be for us.”

She & Brad yell at each other a lot in the movie: “The scenes on ‘By the Sea’ were so tense that we let out (any stress) on camera. There’s really heavy fighting in it, so I think sometimes the crew felt like, ‘Mom and Dad are having a fight!’ — because Brad and I are the producers too. Success or failure, it’s all on us. But it was all oddly freeing. We both wanted to do something as artists … and push each other. So we got this opportunity to go out there and play. I had missed being that free as an actor, and to do that depth of work, and what a pleasure it was to do it with Brad, because I really saw him as an actor, not just the man I loved. In the end, it was an amazing thing, because there’s no actor who wants to help me more, or push me more as an actress, or give me more as a director or writer than my husband, and there’s no man I want to see succeed more than him. We were so there for each other.”

Her Christmas plans: “Our tradition is, well, being somewhat traditional,” Jolie reveals, even cozily referring to herself and Pitt as “Mom and Dad” when detailing their household holiday. “Dad is the main one to deal with the tree, Mom and the kids help decorate, and then we put all the kids to bed. And, as anybody who has a big family knows, [the gifts] take a really long time! You have to be very organized when you’re wrapping them and putting presents around the tree. And you have to make sure no one gets up and leaves before everyone else is done. It’s all a bit military! We’re constantly cleaning up the wrapping paper and getting coffee, like any other parent.”

Do the kids get crazy presents? “We make a point not to spoil them, but there’s usually that one item they’ve been wanting for a long time that we’ve held back until Christmas. They’ve each got that big thing.”

On soldiers and war: “Any time a soldier goes to war it should be supported, and they should be able to feel good about their service to their country, regardless of what the government’s choices are. But there are certain wars that I would be very hesitant about, wars that aren’t clear on the need for the soldiers on the ground and the tactics being used. It’s very difficult for soldiers today, because they’re not seeing the outcomes promised. We haven’t been able to focus on prevention of conflict, on political solutions. We owe them that, so we’re not putting them in harm’s way to solve problems that we are not solving politically.”

If Hillary Clinton becomes President, will Jolie serve as Secretary of State? “Who could say anything but ‘Yes’?” she replies with a grin.

[From the NY Daily News]

Calm your jets, Angelina didn’t just endorse Hillary Clinton! If anything, when Angelina talks about finding political solutions to problems rather than military solutions, she sounds surprisingly dove-ish (while Hillary is certainly more hawkish). I’ve always thought Angelina’s foreign policy is probably more neoconservative, in that she thinks Western countries should be more involved (militarily, politically, economically) in so-called third world countries. She’s the polar opposite of the recent rise in neo-isolationism (which we’re going to hear more about if Rand Paul runs, which I think he will).

As for their Christmas plans… I feel like she’s making an effort to sound more traditional than they really are. I’ll buy that that they do the tree and that the kids don’t have mountains of presents and all that, but I bet they’re not roasting chestnuts on an open fire, etc.

There’s also a new interview with Women’s Weekly, an Australian mag. The quotes are blah – go here to read. She says the same old stuff, nurturing their family, blah blah.

These interviews were done weeks ago. Most outlets hold interviews until the week or so before a movie is released.

She has talked many times about the way they do Christmas. Brad has spoken of it too. So maybe they are traditional. I don’t get why that would be unbelievable. Neither of them were RICH growing up. And please if anyone knows Jon Voight’s history they know that he was not a Rich celebrity. He had Rich friends, but he himself no. He didn’t work a lot because he was picky about roles. and therefore no working meant you didn’t have a lot of money for your family. Brad’s family was middle class and he has talked about how he was raised and how he has taken a lot of what he grew up doing and doing that with their children.

I’m sure Christmas is a lot of fun with a big family. Especially when they kids are so close in age. Yes you have to be strategic in buying and opening gifts. There were 4 of us and while people in our neighborhood were not Traditional.. we were. And it is something we continue now as adults.

not sure what exactly people want her to say in her interviews. She is answering the questions asked. If people want different answers get the interviewers to ask something different.

Anyone who has kids, knows that Xmas is ALL about the kids! I am sure their family has a wonderful time over the holiday season. In addition, the two of them seem really grounded, regarding their choices in bringing up their kids. Angelina & her two daughters look wonderful in the top photo. She looks more beautiful & natural than ever & the kids are stunning

      • Deedee says:

        They look so happppyyy!

      • nikko says:

I totally agree. Angie looks great in this photo. The girls, remember when they adopted Zahara (she was considered Brad’s baby) and Shi so tall. The girls are so pretty. You see who the shopper is….Z!!

    • Greata says:

@Ann…Jolie does not have a publicist.

      • Kim1 says:

Imagine how many millions she saves by not having a manager, agent(acting) or publicist?

      • santana says:

that’s BS. That’s what she wants us to believe. The truth is that a megastar like her wouldn’t survive without a PR team and a manager. I do buy that she has no agent. She doesn’t need an agent at this point of her career. She even has people that controls her kids on the internet imagine if she doesn’t have tons of people who’d monitorate over her. Her name is a brand, trust me, she has a team to protect and further that brand.

      • Janet says:

She does not have a publisher nor an agent. She has a manager for her directing jobs but not for her acting jobs. U like a certain hair-twirler who shall remain nameless, she does not need a publicist to keep her relevant.

      • Kim1 says:

She fired her manager last year. She fired her publicist about 8 years ago.She has an agent for directing projects not for acting. You can believe whatever you want to believe.People in the industry look down on her for not having reps.So she has no reason to lie.Brad has agent and manager. There is no reason for her to lie about having one.
I guess you don’t believe she directed three fiims either.
        Bye Felicia

      • But…it’s because she DOESN’T have a publicist that she’s seen as manipulative and fame-hungry–at least that’s the impression I’ve got from some of her detractors. I won’t understand why some people doesn’t think that she doesn’t play the game. She does. She and Brad do. But they play it by their own rules and regulations.

Do we really NEED to see little tidbits of her kids when she’s doing an interview (it was a recent one; where Shiloh was all ‘wassup’!)? Not really. But I think Angelina’s decided that a little tidbit here and there in an interview is better than the paparazzi getting desperate. She’s never pretended to be above the Hollywood game. With her wedding, the few times she spoke about it before that, she said that she understood that she and Brad were public people, and that they were going to find a way to make it personal, but also a way to share with their fans because she knew we wanted to see. Ergo, the pictures.

Paparazzi. Angelina has already said that she and Brad use the paparazzi for what it’s worth, and that she sees her privacy as already gone, so she uses what she has. The example she used was back in 2007, when she did the Oscar Roundtable, and the paparazzi had followed her and her family all the way to Thailand (I think–it was a place that had a massive earthquake/natural disaster), when she was there for UNHCR work–and they took pics of her unloading.

Just like when she adopted Zahara and had a PEOPLE cover–there were tidbits about Zahara, and how the new mommy was doing, BUT there was also information, that PEOPLE put at the end of the article, about how Angelina adopted Zahara i.e. the agencies she used, normal procedures, etc. Yeah, PEOPLE got their exclusive–but Angelina highlighted an area for adoption of sick and dying children, and was most likely hoping to inspire more adoption. Which it did, because her (now) sister in law, adopted two boys from Ethiopia, because she met Angelina and her kids.

The only thing I’ve ever seen them complain about the paparazzi was back when Brad was promoting the Jesse James movie back in 2007, and he (and the interviewer) made comments about both of them being hunted, being the celebrities of their day; and that Brad said he wants the paps to stay back from his kids, and not scare them.

I remember the comments from paps in a Rolling Stone article–they said that Angelina/Brad were the best, because they would call them, say we’re going to be here at such and such time, and then they would be left alone for the rest of the their trip/stay.

So I never get the comments about people saying that Angelina or Brad are such hypocrites, famehos, etc. I think they do their best to protect their family. They have to maintain a delicate balance. I remember when their twins/family weren’t seen/photographed for a good year or two (and by that I mean, they really seemed to go ‘dark’), and in that time, the tabloids were making up crap about how the twins had Down’s Syndrome. Based on a few pictures taken in an airport. There was no response from Brad or Angelina. But, when they were ready, they took their kids out, let the paps snap their pics, and life went on.

I just don’t see how that’s a bad thing. Or hypocritical–they haven’t complained about the paparazzi ruining their lives, or really said anything about them other than the few examples I’ve said. Especially when they live away from LA for a lot of the year. I try not to judge TOO MUCH when it comes to the paparazzi and celebs, because their reality is not my reality. But I find it a lot more hypocritical when celebs complain about the paparazzi, and then don’t do anything to change it. All that does is bring more pap attention and probably up the price in your photos.

I think Angelina is very smart and savvy in not having a publicist because she’s saving herself money AND she is in charge of her own schedule. I’ll never see how it’s a BAD THING that someone is in charge of their own image. Or that it’s way better to PAY someone to track down idiotic stories that the tabloids make up about you, and deny them via publicist (cough). Don’t get that logic.

        But to each their own.

      • Ben@PR says:

Really? Because she’s been hustling Unbroken for TWO YEARS. She hired an Oscar strategist TWO YEARS AGO!

      • Leah says:

Ben@PR, Angelina did not hire an Oscar strategist. You are confusing her for someone else.

    • Kim1 says:

ITA,Brad said the same thing years ago to Ann Curry on the Today Show.He also talked about on Oprah Show.It is a fact that reporters on RC and in interviews tend to ask her the same questions.
Well at least she is asked about family, politics, social issues and not about hair and skin care. She has mentioned she watches CNN and The Daily Show.I would curious to know if she has seen popular shows like Scandal,Homeland,Games of Thrones,Orange is The New Black. Also what kind of music does she listen to.
I’m so glad they don’t have to get marriage question anymore?

    • GoOnGirl! says:

Thank you Lisa! I so agree!

    • perplexed says:

Isn’t Brad Pitt sort of like her agent? He helps her pick scripts at times, doesn’t he? Do you really need an agent when you’re married to Brad Pitt? (not because of his name recognition, but because he seems to be shrewd when it comes to choosing movie scripts).

      • waq says:

Not at all. Brad and Angie have very different tastes in scripts even if sometimes the subject matter is the same (WWII). I wish she would let him advise on her script choices because he’s really good at choosing scripts whereas her scripts choices are lacking. It would really help her.

And to the person above who said Angelina hired a publicist two years ago for Unbroken. No, Universal, the movie studio who financed the movie, hired the publicist. Since Angelina is the director and the biggest “celebrity draw” attached to this movie, she is of course working with the publicist that Universal hired to sell this movie. She is deeply invested in this project because of how much Louise means to her and because it’s a new career path.

  2. Delueth says:

Selling the family to sell the movie. I cant think of anybody else that throws in so many family quotes, other than reality stars ofcourse.

    • Amcn says:

Ya know, I get the impression she was asked about her family and Christmas etc. She probably doesn’t just blather on about it while the interviewer tries to interject with questions about the movie.

    • Maya says:

Sorry to burst your bubbles but Angelina nor Brad don’t have to sell anything for publicity nor sell a movie.

The are the most famous family in the world – from Australia – Asia – Europe – North & South America – people knows them and likes them. The millions of fans around the world wants to hear about this family and Brad & Angelina tries to accommodate that while still keep things as private as possible.

Btw – Unbroken has already been sold, tickets are almost sold out.

      • Ann says:

Are you working for Jolie, because you sound like her publicist?

      • DJ says:

Well then, what the hell had she been doing for the past 3+ months? Selling Unbroken! Your comment makes absolutely NO sense.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@DJ, who wrote: “Well then, what the hell had she been doing for the past 3+ months? Selling Unbroken! Your comment makes absolutely NO sense.”

And neither does yours. Maya is right … Mr. and Mrs. Pitt don’t have to ‘sell’ themselves or their films, but they do honor their contracts/obligations to the Studio by helping to ‘promote’ the film. “Unbroken” and others films soon to be released have had scheduled release dates for months. Premieres and promotion tours are expected. It’s what the Studio expects. It’s what the media expects. It’s what the public expects. Without any intentional ‘snark’ at all I can honestly say that the only actor ‘selling’ anything right now is Jennifer Aniston.

      • Artemis says:

        @Emma

LOL, you know all those sentences can be summarised in: she’s selling Unbroken. Or promoting it. It’s ALL the same no matter how you frame/explain/elaborate it!
Using quotation marks is not appropriate, no matter who tells her do it, she’s doing her job by selling Unbroken. She even goes out of her way to do it because stars like her don’t have to do junkets (Pitt doesn’t do Comic con, Jolie does). She even did a livechat once. She’s one of the hardest sellers there is!

And she’s always used her personal life to do it, in combination with the usual selling points e.g. talking about the film and acting journey/process. For all the times people say that you can bar certain questions, it only happened ONCE and that was during the promotion of ‘A Mighty Heart’ and she blamed somebody in her team for that (please, as if she wasn’t aware and in control, it just backfired).

She’s known for being open and honest about any question and her personal life is something she happily discusses when promoting movies. Honestly, as stans you can’t pretend Jolie doesn’t indulge you with tidbits of her personal life. One major example is when Pitt took pictures of Jolie and they were published around the time Changeling came out. Unless you think that’s all coincidence?

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

The hell you say … 🙂

… name me one actor–regardless of their stature–who doesn’t do promotion tours for their films. Some only do Domestic promotion tours, some only do International promotion tours, and some are asked to do both. The actor isn’t in charge of that part of it, unless it’s the content of their own interviews. Actors and Directors are out right now promoting these soon-to-be-released films: “Big Eyes,” “American Sniper (Director Clint Eastwood is out promoting with Bradley Cooper),” “Into the Woods,” “Blackhat,” “The Wedding Ringer,” “Still Alice,” “The Gambler,” “Unbroken,” “The Interview,” “Selma,” “A Most Violent Year,” and “Two Days, One Night.” So why is Angelina Jolie the only Industry member being accused of ‘using things’ to sell her film? Everybody involved in promotion tours right now is being asked personal questions, and answering them. Do you think Emily Blunt isn’t being asked about her baby and what plans are in store for Christmas? Is ‘she’ using her personal life to sell her film too?

        http://www.eonline.com/news/608379/watching-frozen-may-have-caused-emily-blunt-to-give-birth

These films would be ‘promoted’ to the general public anytime of the year, because that’s one way to bring interest to the films. Films are SOLD at Film Festivals and such. When actors, directors, and producers attend these events they are indeed attempting to SELL their film for distribution.

  3. jinni says:

I don’t think she’s making up the conservative thing. I think she really has become more traditional. Maybe she’s playing it up a little more to appeal the old boy Oscar academy members, but even before she started campaigning she seem to spout out more traditional gender role type of things. Not on a Ma Duggar level just more frequently than she ever did before. I started noticing this after she had the twins. She’s always said who her mother was called Marshmallow because she was so soft and sweet, so maybe like a lot women she’s turning into her mother and getting less edgy as she ages. Just saying.

    • bettyrose says:

She loves kids – they both do – that has always been clear. The kids already live pretty unconventional lives, and honestly the logistics of giving all six of them the holiday of their dreams sounds exhausting. I didn’t get “bland” or “too traditional” at all from that interview.

  4. Kiddo says:

    Budduck Fudduck ornaments.

  5. Maya says:

She always gives the best interviews – always articulate, polite, warm and intelligent.

Why do people find it so hard to believe this couple can be a normal couple with the normal stuff during Christmas? She clearly explained that they only do the traditional part with dad getting the tree, mum and children decorating it. And they both wrap the presents the night before.

Brad is from a very family oriented background while Angelina was not from a background like that. She clearly loves Brad and her children and seems to do a lot of traditional things because she didn’t have that in her childhood.

And also – if you have read the other interview – then you will know that Angelina didn’t repeat anything. She actually gives a hint about family life but never fully tells anything.

I would rather hear about Angelina, Brad and their children instead of beauty products, celeb friends and passive aggressive comments about fellow colleagues like someone else we know.

This woman knows when to talk and when to step back and be silent.

PS: this interview was done in November according to another site.

PPS: now I will wish everyone a merry Christmas and cheering for Unbroken. The tickets are already sold out my place (UK) and many people are excited to watch it. So go Angelina and Louis Z – show the world that haters cannot bring a good human down.

  6. Kcarp says:

Well what if she said she likes to get hammered in Cabo over Christmas. We don’t get the kids anything , we tell them be lucky we picked you out of the orphanage?

Seriously what was she going to say?

  7. So says:

she sounds like a 50s housewife robot.

    • Maya says:

A 50s housewife robot doesnt become one of the most powerful women in the world, the robot doesnt campaign to get wartime rapes as war crime and then have it accepted at the war tribunal, a robot doesn’t act, write, direct and produce movies about human strenght and equality.

    • lisa2 says:

      really???

I don’t have kids; but the majority of my friends that do are doing and saying the same things that she is. So there are MILLIONS of 50’s housewife robots out there. ON here too. I’ve read some of the comments from the women here talking about Christmas with their children and families.

so lets give a clap to all the Robots out there. Making Christmas fun for their kids/family.

      • vauvert says:

Another robot housewife here. Oh wait, not a housewife (neither is AJ….), and what am I supposed to do for Christmas, get high and be incoherent and talk makeup with single girlfriends instead of decorating the tree, wrapping gifts and baking?

      • lisa2 says:

I know.. I’m not a “Housewife”.. but today I’m baking.. making cookies and candies to deliver tomorrow with my Christmas gifts. I love doing it.. every year. I guess that is robotic.. OH well.

HAP-PY HO-LI-DAY-S TO ALL (I tried to be robotic there)

    • Amcn says:

You’re a mean one, Mr. grinch

    • manatee says:

Right now I’m feeling more like a zombie not a robot.
But clearly Angie is saying all the nice, neat and correct things almost everyone wants to hear. No more putting one’s foot in one’s mouth.

    • What’s wrong with wanting a nice Christmas for your family, even if you are the one to prepare everything? Some people take pride in being able to provide home cooked food for their family; I do. I’ve been baking all day yesterday, and had about four hours of sleep today (as in I slept from 8 am to 12am), and am about to do some more baking, and cleaning before my mom gets back. I cooked my own birthday dinner, and invited my family and family friends–because I LIKE cooking for people. Nothing wrong with that. Just like there’s nothing wrong with NOT being able to/wanting to cook or bake.

And being that this interview came out TODAY i.e. two days before Christmas, it’s not difficult to think WHY someone would ask her what she’s doing for Christmas. It’s a natural question that’s asked of everyone. And being that this isn’t a four minute spot on tv, she probably had a lot more time to formulate a (longer) answer.

  8. lower-case deb says:

speaking of interviews, a transcript of their NY press conference is out, i think partially.

it’s funny how deep down all the actors are just momma’s (and poppa’s) little boys still.

Garrett Hedlund’s mom sounds a hoot:
she was like, “If you don’t warn me the next time you die on-screen before I walk into the theater, and then I cry and embarrass myself in front of other people, I will slap you across the face.”

I think it’s normal .I can’t get over the fact that her Vedio on youtube it reach 11 million views
    Ppl are fascinated with her

    • Andrea1 says:

      Exactly Martin!
People who love and hate her are So fascinated with her and there is no denying that 🙂
I just can’t get over the fact that the video garnered 11million views! 11million!
Some movie trailers don’t even get that much view!
      The power of Jolie 😉

    • zut alors! says:

Hopefully those You Tube views will translate to $$$ at the box office for Unbroken.
Come on Angie fans…..let’s show our support for Angelina.

  10. Nessa says:

It really sounds like her and Brad have a wonderful relationship. Both so replspectful of one another and of the marriage… A dual effort to keep it going. I mean… You never know what goes on in private, but everything she says about their relationship is always on point. It truly does sound like they have a wonderful family and it’s not just for appearances.

  11. doofus says:

sounds like a very nice Christmas, and very similar to what my fam did.

BNBiS (Before-Not-Believing in Santa), I always wondered why my folks looked like holy hell on Christmas morning…because they were up ALL NIGHT wrapping gifts for three kids who would be up at the crack of dawn.

    • Kiddo says:

I’ve just received word from the rotund red-hatted one that you are now officially on the ‘naughty list’. Be sure to leave fresh baked cookies with milk to redeem yourself. You will receive coal instead of Kohl’s in your stocking otherwise.

    • doofus says:

crap! MUST. REDEEM. MYSELF. (tho…it IS fun being naughty…)

cookies and milk and bourbon for all!

  12. Hannah says:

Love her usually, but I really disagree with her comment about soldiers. There are some wars that are questionable at best like she said and nobody is forcing them to join the military. There is no excuse to be so ignorant about world issues, especially in this day and age so people who support the government’s obviously greedy and evil motives don’t get my support. Blind support of soldiers seems really stupid to me…”oh I support the soldiers but not the war” doesn’t anyone see how dumb that sounds??

    • Kiddo says:

I’m of two minds on that. One, many people who are financially disadvantaged join the military due to lack of options. Two, there definitely is too much worship/fetishizing of soldiers. If you disagree with worship of symbolic idols, it has become blasphemous to say otherwise, and that shouldn’t be the case.

    • Lucky Charm says:

I think some people DO feel forced to join the military, actually. The signing bonus, and other bonuses depending on the field they go in to, plus housing and medical benefits, really help out their families. When you have nothing and no money, joining the military for a few years in exchange for keeping your family housed and fed seems like the only choice they can make.

    • journey says:

Hannah, not to sound all disagreeable about your high flown ideals, but sorry, but soldiers can’t pick and choose which wars they fight in. if they enlist in peace time, or for a war they believe in, and then suddenly they find themselves in a war they don’t believe in, do you expect them to go awol and be charged with desertion? when you’re military you don’t just stomp your feet and leave when the urge takes you.

  13. perplexed says:

Is it possible to support the soldier as a person without supporting the war? I wonder if that’s what she was trying to say, but I’m not sure. I couldn’t really tell what she meant.

    • Gena says:

Imagine a world without soldiers! I’m sure countries gonna survive itself!

    • Chris2 says:

I thought that was exactly what she meant…..support and respect the armed forces, even though you might be bitterly opposed to the conflict.
I thought this might be her explaining how the two attitudes can coexist, but also her comments can read as a clear criticism of those in power viewing the troops as cannon fodder in avoidable wars.

Anyhoo…..Christmas: I know it’s intrusive, but I would so love to know what the children really really wanted for Christmas!
For myself, unable to find Château Miraval rosé for Thursday, I have a Provençale rosé made by the J-Ps’ wine-making guru! Magnifique!

    • Eleanor says:

What it sounded like she was saying about the military is that there needs to be more political involvement in wars, naively thinking this is what will win wars. What she couldn’t possibly understand due to the fact that she has never served in the mitary at a high level officer’s position, is that is exactly the reason we are stagnate in wars. Too much political involvement. We have the most professional, well trained, and well equipped military in the world. There are layers to this onion that is not for this gossip website to delve into. It worries me when anyone gives a non-military Hollywood type a platform to espouse their ignorance about military related issues. She really is not the be all end all to the world’s issues. No one can be. Our issues are far too complex and diverse.

  14. BlueeJay says:

‘We make a point not to spoil them” I would love to know her definition of spoiling. I don’t think that you can live in a family with worth over 200 million and not be spoiled. Just saying. Five star hotels, travel around the world, multiple shopping trips (caught by the paps), if that is not spoiling what is?

  15. Grant says:
