Angelina Jolie is going to meet Pope Francis, will probably be sainted for real

wenn22007522

One of the funniest and most amazing stories over the holidays was that cool Pope Francis used his Christmas speech to take down all of the hypocrites, liars, cheaters and d-bags WITHIN THE CHURCH BUREAUCRACY. It was amazing! The speech was for the Curia, the church higher-ups, and some of them looked like they were going to cry. Anyway, as we keep saying, Pope Francis is probably the coolest Pope most people have ever seen. He actually works on issues of poverty. He doesn’t care for all of the fancy accoutrements of the job. He tells kids that their dogs go to heaven. He’s cool with gay people. And now he’s probably going to officially canonize Saint Angelina Jolie. FINALLY!

Hollywood meets the Holy See! Tinseltown royalty Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are taking a very special trip to Rome this month, not to eat pasta and tour the Colosseum, but to meet the Pope, an insider reveals exclusively in the new issue of Us Weekly.

The A-listers will fly to Italy in early January “for a VIP meet-and-greet at the Vatican with Pope Francis,” the source says of the stars, who consider themselves nonreligious.

Pitt, 51, grew up Baptist but later distanced himself from his faith, telling the Hollywood Reporter in 2012, “I don’t have a great relationship with religion. I oscillate between agnosticism and atheism.”

That said, a friend tells Us that both the actor and his wife “admire the Pope” and “like the Pope’s message.” (Pope Francis is thought to be more tolerant than his predecessors; speaking about homosexuality in 2013, he famously said, “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?”)

The jet-setting stars have been busy in recent days with individual projects — Pitt was at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Jan. 3, while Jolie was spotted in Las Vegas — but arrangements for their visit are under way. According to the first source, they sent their head of security to Rome to prep for their arrival.

[From Us Weekly]

Hollywood types are always trying to get the Vatican to screen their more religion-friendly films, so I kind of wonder if Brad and Angelina’s Vatican visit has another purpose. Perhaps a screening of Unbroken? Or Selma. Or both. Except that both Selma and Unbroken are more about Protestant figures (Louis Zamperini was raised Catholic, but became a born-again Evangelical, and Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist preacher). I could honestly see Cool Pope Francis being interested in seeing either film. Hm…

Meanwhile, Angelina and Brad were no-shows at last night’s National Board of Review Awards, even though Unbroken was named as one of the NBR’s top films of the year. I think they skipped because Angie and Brad are already in Italy? There are some photos of them in Rome today.

I hate you for not granting broadcast rights to any media company.

      • Kiddo says:

You should have caught up with them at the airport. You could have asked what they thought about Bill Murray and whatnot.

        #missedopportunities

      • mia girl says:

Cindy Crawford and her welcoming charm was one thing, but honestly, I would sh*t myself into silence if I saw Jolie and Pitt at the airport. That’s just too much celebrity power to be contained in a crappy LaGuardia terminal…

Although, the topic of the Clooney wedding would still apply and to honor my fellow CBers, I would muster up the courage to ask if they were sorry they missed the chance to dance with Mr. Everything at the wedding of the century.
        #missedopportunities

All that said, I bet that Crawford still has better shoe game.

      • Kiddo says:

But Angie is literally “creased to high heaven”, even if Mr Sixer thinks it’s buggery.

  2. savu says:

I was at the Vatican over the summer and oh. My. God. Most lavishly decorated place you’ve ever seen.

And the Italians especially LOVE Francis. For his own birthday, he bought a bunch of sleeping bags for the Roman homeless. He practices what he preaches man, and I’m not religious but I have a lot of respect for that.

As for Francis and the Jolie, all I can think is YES. I hope this is true because it will be awesome. And I hope they’re somehow able to bring the kids (or maybe just the older ones) along. Being there is an amazing experience and Catholic or not, Francis is a great role model.

    • DJ says:

Can someone explain to me WHY there are only 2 or 3 children “selected” to go places? They have 6 children, why not take all of them, all the time? I do not understand the picking and choosing and frankly, it isn’t right!

  3. SnarkGirl says:

This Pope is a PR whiz to be sure, but until he turns the pedophiles in the churches ranks over to their local police for arrest, he gets no respect from me. Pretty words mean nothing – he’s still protecting child molesters.

    • Renee says:

      Yes.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

Yes to this, his pr person Greg Burke used to be employed by Fox News in fact. Pretty words indeed.

    • Elly says:

they are protecting their image and institution at all costs. The child molesters get new jobs where no one sees them and they hope the public forgets about them. Francis´ nice persona and all the new PR stunts like this make people forget the “dark” things.
The british royals will do the same with the new crisis. Distraction and PR moves plus time will heal till the next scandal comes along.

    • Maria says:

i agree. i dont get the fuss. yeah ok he is at least publicly not as backwards as other popes but thats hardly a good thing. wow, he never burned a witch himself, great man.

nice that he bought sleeping bags for the homeless, the church is so freaking rich, they could share their wealth with the people.

      • Andrea1 says:

Exactly! I don’t get the fuss either
There is nothing special about him please.

      • Esmerelda says:

        +10000

      • Bridget says:

The leader of one of the conservative groups in the world does an almost complete 180 from his predecessor, eschews the lavish trappings available, chooses to preach tolerance, bring awareness to social justice and poverty, and use his pulpit for good and you wonder what the fuss is about?

    • FLORC says:

Because change really has to come quickly and be 100% visible.
That seedy underbelly part of the church is well woven into it. He can’t simply say they won’t be protected and that’s it. This will be a looong process. Just because you haven’t seen change doesn’t mean steps have been taken.
I think there’s been much progress here. There’s just too much that exists and is kept hidden to protect those crimes. It’s not a simple matter. I think it’s a bit much to say he’s protecting them. Actively I doubt that. Your comment simplifies the issue too greatly.

      • original kay says:

        no gray area for pedophilia.

not ever, not even once. No “behind the scenes” or “it’s over simplified”.

He is the titular head of a company (yes, religions are companies imo) and he assumed that position knowing the past of hiding pedophiles.

not ever can this be forgotten or glossed over. nothing he can do can ever be enough until this changes within the catholic church, real changes that are forever changes.

    • Sharon Lea says:

Yes, turn over the pedophiles to the police I absolutely agree. And the other issue is the nuns in the church need equality. Until he addresses women and having a voice in the church and curia, I don’t see true reform. Wish we would see him inviting the Nuns on the Bus to the Vatican.

    • db says:

      Big +1. Thank you!

Matching white cape outfits! That was my first thought on reading the headline.

So, thanks for the photos. Great minds think alike.

    great saint jolie

  7. mo says:

She really is the political animal, isn’t she? Do a good deed but make a better movie angie.

  8. aims says:

I really love the new pope and I’m not even Catholic. I think he’s the best thing that ever happened to the church. I cannot express how much I love him.

  9. clara says:

You have to be dead to be made a Saint, don’t you?
(Yes, I know it was meant as a joke.)

    • lamamu says:

      And Catholic?

    • Lucky Charm says:

Yes, AND you have to have at least two miracles attributed to you. Not everyone nominated is canonized as a Saint, and the process can take decades or even hundreds of years before you reach Sainthood.

      • Pandy says:

Yes, true. She’s not there to be canonized but I’m sure they will have a good talk about the charitable works both she and Brad are involved with. I was raised Catholic but gave it up for obvious reasons .,.. but I do have to say that I think Pope Francis is a breath of fresh air.

      • FLORC says:

Glad someone is saying it. That title irked me and came off a bit insulting. A living person cannot be canonized into sainthood. That we would assume that would happen and know so little on the matter was the insulting part.

  10. truthSF says:

Wow, she really has very long limbs.

  11. inthekitchen says:

I just want to know why the popes go from looking 60 to 80 in about 1 year? The last one aged BIG time in a short amount of time and now this one (the most awesomest pope ever) suddenly looks really old. I can’t imagine it’s a difficult job like the presidency (the last one, anyway, lived like a king!)…so what is it? It’s very strange.

    • FLORC says:

It’s an extremely stressful position. There’s so much the pope has to address. And think of it this way. The Vatican is unknowably wealthy and is thought to hold great secrets and thought mythic items if not simply 1 of a kind objects. There’s a lot to know in that city. And he’s a good pope so likely is trying to deal with as much as he can.
I’d wager his job when done correctly is far more stressful than the presidents.

      • Bridget says:

Its a huge amount of pressure. He is the living embodiment of the Catholic Church and leader to hundreds of millions of people.

  12. Abbott says:

If this visit doesn’t end with Dame AngieJo stretching out her hands and floating into the heavens, the tape was doctored and we should cry havoc in the streets until it’s aired unedited.

Does anyone else here have the early signs of stigmata?

  13. Mar says:

I’m Jewish but I have loved this Pope from day one. He really is the most interesting man in the world.

    • Kori says:

Still think he should have been Barbara Walters’s Most Fascinating Person. She didn’t interview Amal either so it’s not like that was a sticking point. In this year Francis HAS taken on pedophilia (admittedly with a LOT more to do), women’s place in the Church, poverty and income inequality on a global scale, the Mafia, tolerance towards homosexuality and even gay marriage, war and sectarian ciolence, religious intolerance and persecution of ALL religions (not just Christianity), etc….Some things are cosmetic differences but as a lifelong Catholic who stopped going to church on the wake of the pedophilia scandal (though I didn’t stop identifying as Catholic), these things are going to take a long time to rectify. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither were the scandals and no one hates change more than the RCC. But they have changed in the past, seriously changed (Vatican 2) and I believe are headed that way again. In the meantime, the Pope is making all the right moves, big and small, in my book. Opinions may, and will, vary.

  14. mika says:

Another PR stunt for Unbroken. Gotta get those international numbers up.

    • Kylie says:

We don’t know that it has anything to do with Unbroken. The meeting with the Pope could be related to her UN work. In fact, it most likely is. Besides, Angie always does better in international audiences than domestic, so she wouldn’t need to do that. If she was to do anything, it would be to meet with the American President to boost domestic numbers. That is where she needs to do the PR. She has no need for it outside of America.

      • lower-case deb says:

i wonder if it has anything to do with Malta? she recently released a short docu of her and Gutierrez’s visit to Malta, esp. on the topic of ‘boat people’.

the documentary notes that in the past, Malta had a good cooperation with Italian navy. but with the termination of Italy’s Mare Nostrum initiative, Malta has lost a significant support re: refugees.

and Malta is a predominantly Catholic country? (according to Wikipedia at least).

maybe she’s there to talk about this matter?

    • Krystal says:

I doubt meeting the Pope will benefit her. I really want to know how it will?

      • Kori says:

One more powerful ally for some of her pet causes? The Pope has been speaking out on poverty, war and refugees. I imagine they have a lot in common and both have a significant microphone and platform.

      • Krystal says:

I understand the reason behind her visit if it’s for her charitable causes. I think it’s wonderful. However, I’m referring to the people that said she is going on this trip as a PR stunt for her movie.

    • Maya says:

Best to check Angelina’s boxoffice details before making a fool out of yourself.

Angelina’s movies earns most of the income from overseas markets.

As someone already mentioned – it’s domestic boxoffice that Angelina usually struggles. Unbroken has already earned $90m domestic and only opens to the big markets this week and end of January. This movie is a mega hit despite what some people say.

      • BlueeJay says:

For sure with her as an actress and when she is in action movies or Disney. However, not so much in drama roles. As well she is director not actress and this movie is about world war II, not such a big seller overseas. As well it played to a Christian base so will probably do well in South America but not so well in Muslim countries or China, or India, etc.

      • DJ says:

90 million on something SHE did not act in…. There you have it!!

      • Thelurker says:

And 241 mil domestic (Maleficent) for something she acted in . There you have it!!

    • hmmm says:

Agreed. Anything to further the Oscar cause and Jolie’s image as especially holy. Mr. Zamperini had a Christian epiphany, did he not? So here is Angelina, doing her St Peter two step.

  15. scout says:

I love this Pope too, coolest one so far. Great to hear Brange are meeting him. They don’t have to be religious for saying “Whassup?” to Papal and to have a chat about global issues, right? Shiloh shows up?

  16. Tippy says:

Pope Francis was once employed as a nightclub bouncer.

  17. Kim1 says:

I saw the pics of AJ,Shiloh and Zahara in Rome.I don’t belive anything in Us Weekly concerning the JoliePitts.
Lastly ENOUGH of the Saint Angie BS

    • Maya says:

Exactly – I am sick of this Saint Angie stuff as well.

It’s only people who dislike her use it to mock her humanitarian work.

People who like her don’t use it at all.

  18. HoustonGrl says:

I love Pope Francis. As for Angie being sainted? I know you were probably kidding. But in all seriousness Catholics don’t bestow sainthood on a living person – it occurs after beatification (and of course, death).

  19. NeoCleo says:

I wish that man would live forever.

  20. bettyrose says:

Twice divorced with three children born out of wedlock but she’s being judged by her good actions rather than arbitrary moral standards? It’s about time we lived in this kind of world!

    • Katherine says:

Well, technically her first 2 marriages didn’t count in the eyes of the Church. Same with her marriage to Brad. So she is free to marry Brad in the Church. Now if Brad’s first marriage was an official religious one in his own religion then that could prove an obstacle.

Oh dear. So many sticky points with religions.

  21. Maya says:

Good news – maybe the Pope is interested in the forgiveness theme of Unbroken and wants to talk more about it.

PS: dear Pope do say a special prayer that Unbroken gets nominated and wins multiple Oscars;)

  22. Ginger says:

My Mother is a Catholic although she has not set foot in a church since my brother and I were christened as babies. I have never been brought up in that faith. However, she adores Pope Francis so much that she is actually practicing again! Whenever he does something awesome she sends me a text about it. I love how he has inspired so many people with his modern take on the world and religion. However, I was a little disappointed as a Buddhist that he did not meet with His Holiness the Dalai Lama when all of the Nobel laureates had gathered. He sent a video greeting instead. Now, I’m not sure if his motivation was to keep China on his good side or not. There has been some speculation about that. The Pope claims he could not meet with any of the laureates and that was the only reason. I’m keeping an open mind on the subject and hope to see a meeting between the two of them in the future. How exciting that the Jolie-Pitts get to meet him!

  23. BlueeJay says:

Aw…..the Jolie is finding Jesus. You got to hand it to these two for making sure they are noticed. Wonder who gave the story to US?

    • Maya says:

      Duplicate

    • Maya says:

I am a hindu and I have been to Vatican City and met the pope (long distance). Nothing about me finding Jesus.

Hindus go to churches, Christians go to mosques and Muslims go to churches.

Millions around the world respect other religions and wants to learn more about the religions and beliefs.

Angelina and Brad already mentioned several times they respect every religion and teaches their children about all of them.

PS: and please – whether you like it or not – this couple is the most famous couple on the world. They don’t need publicity for anything.

    • kendra says:

Like the Jenhens tell us anything about Jennifer is none of our business. Angie finding Jesus is none of your business.

  24. db says:

So has anyone seen Unbroken? Was it good, did it move you? I’m thinking of going this weekend

    • DJ says:

DB, I saw it, and unless you are into horrific torture scene after scene, my recommendation is wait to see it. Wait until it is on Netflix or, On Demand. 90% of the movie was some sort of torture scene. Very disappointing!

    • Thelurker says:

Go see it and judge it yourself .. and don’t take seriously what critics are saying and others who tells you not to see it!!

  25. FlowerintheAttic says:

The title of this article, while meant as tongue and cheek, is making me really, really uncomfortable. It feels and reads as extremely disrespectful.

    • Miss M says:

You said it better than I could and my post about it “disappeared”. I find It very disrespectful too. I can’t believe nobody before you called the writer on it. Not too long ago people were complaining about disrespecting one’s faith on the Selena thread…

      • FlowerintheAttic says:

agreed Miss M. I’m not in the least surprised your post “disappeared’ from this site. I know people around here pride themselves on being ‘progressive’, but that headline was trashy and ignorant.

  26. I’m disgusted and it makes me lose a lot of respect for humanity to think that, not only was this said but the fact that it was a thought shows We have veered so far off the path from right and wrong.

  27. Misprounced Name Dropper says:

Jolie to be sainted? Now you’re just trolling.

  28. Dee Kay says:

I admire this Pope’s progress in many areas. But he doesn’t have my support, as he explicitly came out against my life choice: childfreedom:

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/06/06/pope-francis-is-wrong-about-my-child-free-life.html

    http://time.com/2814527/pope-francis-dogs-cats-pets/

Don’t get me wrong, I have waited a long time for a pope who was not homophobic and who actually gave a sh*t about social justice issues. But I disagree with everything he’s said on the issue of couples choosing not to have children.

  29. G says:

    http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=18120

I really like this Pope. Although, he hasn’t fully embraced same sex life choices (yet!) he has progressed the church leaps and bounds by acknowledging corruption within the Vatican and even acknowledged the existence of a ‘Gay Lobby’. If nothing else that’s progress.

As for Jolie, she is a remarkable human being but Mother Teresa is still on the waiting list so…there’s that.

  30. mandygirl says:

I’m Catholic. She can’t be canonized because she’s not Catholic, nor is she dead. Plus, she hasn’t completed any miracles that I’m aware of. Mother Theresa hasn’t even been sainted yet. She’s probably there to meet the Pope and he’ll probably bless her.

    • Katherine says:

Once again. Jolie is Catholic and was raised Catholic by a religious mother. I remember reading some letters written by Angelina and her brother when they were kids about their mother teaching them to love the Blessed Mother. Some letter of support for her mom’s childhood parish anniversary program – sweet and, for me, familiar.

    • Lola says:

Can you imagine, Jolie gets “sainted” before Mother Theresa … ja! If that happens I will officially work out the first Anonymous / Roman Catholic section in order to hack more that Sony’s emails ….

  31. Brittany says:

Funny how Brad and Angelina seem to be catering to the ‘right’ so much when their movies come out having to do with war, religion, etc. When they hustle, they hustle hard.

    • Katherine says:

I don’t think supporting and be appreciative of WW2 vets is a right wing thing. Seriously what a stupid comment.

  32. Lindz says:

He should give her a little talk about adultery, having sex with married men and other stuff.

  33. YLP says:

Angelina Jolie is not a Catholic, regardless of how she was raised. She and Brad both are atheists. You have to accept to Christ to be a Christian. Her brother James is a devout Christian however, and attends saddleback church.

  34. Lola says:

Doesn’t she have to be dead to be “sainted”?

I think he rocks! (but no one will be what Pope John Paul II was) And I would give an arm and a leg to have full access to the Vatican’s library … yup, I am a geek and a nerd and I love it!

  35. Carrie says:

Glad to see I’m not the only one that got irritated by the title.

    • BlueeJay says:

Probably no the best day to bring that up – seeing as what happened this morning.
      #JeSuisCharlie

      • spaniard says:

True, but as far as I’m concerned Catholics stopped killing people for their beliefs after Middle Age. There are other religions that still act like we are in the S.XIV not Catholicism.
Oh and the title is disrespectful, I’d like to see a joke like this about Islam, but you have to be very brave to do that.
        #JeSuisCharlie

  36. Layla says:

The “sainted” thing is either a joke or a display of gross ignorance. As for Franny, I’m a lapsed Catholic but this guy is the PR the church doesn’t want. The CC, especially in the US, is dedicated to catering to the right wing tea-partyers; that’s where the money is, obvy. This guy is actually – wait for it – living the way jesus was purported to have lived *faints in fainting chair*.

Believe me, as someone who does PR for a living, you don’t create a campaign to appeal to the market that can’t afford to finance you. #frannyislegityo

  37. JFC says:

Everyone needs to chill. The title is a joke. If it was anyone else besides this atheist, you would all be laughing.

    • Miss M says:

You need to take a chill and respect others ‘ opinions and beliefs. The title was a very bad joke.

  38. Kylie says:

I kiss my brother. And my parents. And my gran and pop. Are you saying you’ve never greeted your brother or rellies with a kiss on the cheek or lips?

    • wow says:

do you make out with them?

    • Kylie says:

Nope, but neither did Angelina, if you know what making out really means.

    • Kylie says:

Hilda I guess you are not Greek or Italian. We greet relatives, no matter the sex, with a kiss on the lips. Nonnas, grandpas, brothers, cousins etc. A lot of cultures greet their relatives with a kiss on the lips (no tongue). You’re not xenophobic are you? Or maybe just ignorant of other cultures?
