Ethan Hawke: People wanted Angelina Jolie to ‘burn out’ like Marilyn Monroe

wenn22045663

God help me, I still think Ethan Hawke is gross-hot. Like, I completely understand when people say that he’s gross, that he’s smug, that he’s arrogant, that his facial hair is weak, all of it. And I agree. But I still find him attractive. UGH I have issues, I know. These are photos of Ethan out and about in NYC this week – he’s still promoting Boyhood, plus some other projects I think. Honestly though, Ethan will talk about anything. You can sit down with him to talk about his latest project and he ends up talking about Marvel or… Angelina Jolie?

Tell Us how to get on that list! Ethan Hawke revealed to USA Today on Tuesday, Jan. 6, that he and his Taking Lives costar Angelina Jolie still keep in touch — via holiday cards!

“Every now and then, I get a Christmas card,” the Boyhood actor, 44, told the paper.

He then reflected on what it was like to work alongside Jolie over ten years ago, before she had even started her romance with now-husband Brad Pitt. In 2003 (when Taking Lives was filmed), Jolie had recently filed for divorce from Billy Bob Thornton and was raising her eldest son Maddox, then 2, on her own. A year later, the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider actress would meet the love of her life Pitt, with whom she would eventually share six children.

“I worked with her at a very interesting moment in her life,” Hawke, 44, recalled. “It’s pretty awesome what she’s doing. People wanted her to be Marilyn Monroe. They wanted her to burn out. She was about as punk rock as a movie star could be. I loved her for it.”

Hawke praised the Unbroken director for her work as a humanitarian. “She’s taken all that energy and turned that into being a substantive human being,” the Before Sunrise star noted. “The fact that Angelina has transcended the way the world objectified her and is making serious films, she deserves all the positive things that are happening.”

[From Us Weekly]

Aw. That’s really nice. I don’t have any shade for what he said. And I agree that Angelina was pretty punk rock… back in the day. I don’t think she’s punk at all these days. Then again, I don’t think she wants to be punk. So, did Ethan and Angelina have a thing back in the day? He always talks about her and he still has such nice things to say about her, consistently. Does that prove that they never bumped uglies?

Also, I would love to see Angelina’s Christmas card.

Yeah the way he talks about her they clearly never screwed and that wasn’t his decision.

    • Arock says:

I think this is the case, too. He’s still holding out for a Taking Lives 2 and try to cash in on all the goodness.
How does anyone find this guy attractive?! The smug rat face and history of nanny banging are so yuck. Ok, I’ll give a pass to the early 90s roles in a high school way- like he’s someone’s ne’re-do-well older brother who reads Beowulf and paints kind of way (but you didn’t know any better cause you were 14 and thought nirvana would change the world, man) but that’s it.

    • Esmom says:

Lol. Although they both look pretty handsy in that photo so who really knows?

      • Someonestolemyname says:

He’s attractive, he just looks like he needs a good scrub and shave.
It’s like he purposely tries to look messy.

    • StormsMama says:

      HAHAHAHAHA Luca I agree

    • zut alors! says:

Love this video of Angelina, Ethan and Olivier promoting Taking Lives on Charlie Rose. Ms. Jolie looks very fetching here.

  2. Charlotte says:

Not now. Pre-teen me can’t even love him for Before Sunrise any more either.

I still would Adrien Brody. He’s my gross hot. Ten showers and foetal position afterwards.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

You are so funny to me because I am right there in fetal position beside you. Maybe more like a dozen showers, then a full body Betadine pre-surgical scrub.

    • Godwina says:

Yeah, AB is def gross-hot and yes. YES.

  3. Kitten says:

I know he has a lot of haters around here but you have to admit, dude gives great interview.

    I think he’s right about Angelina’s evolution.
For what it’s worth, I think she still has that rebellious spirit in her, but maturity and the desire to make a difference in the world have tempered it a bit.
I think she learned a long time ago that in order to accomplish her goals, she has to reel it in a bit-and she does a really great job of that. She always comes across as really professional, yet warm and engaging in her interviews.

    • Maria says:

      Agreed on all points.

    • Andrea1 says:

“I think she learned a long time ago that in order to accomplish her goals, she has to reel it in a bit-and she does a really great job of that. She always comes across as really professional, yet warm and engaging in her interviews”.
Exactly. Your comment is spot on.
The media totally burnt her for her honesty..

      • Artemis says:

I was reading some of her old interviews. She was generally regarded as some kind of kooky punker I suppose, for lack of a better description. Unique, rebellious and remarkable facial features. It was only late 1990s that she started to sound ‘crazy’ and becoming more famous did not help (when she married JLM with all the blood, nobody really ‘burned’ her and that was pretty out there too).

There was one interview where she is a straight up hot mess. She sounds like she has mental health issues, and yes, she’s honest, tough and sensitive at the same time and intelligent but that doesn’t mean she didn’t have legit mental problems. Of course when she didn’t hide it, the press is going to create some stereotype for her. In another interview she talks about a mental breakdown because she couldn’t reach BBT, she sounded co-dependent on him and she knew it (and loved it). In another they are OTT gross with Jolie not even needing a prompt to discuss super intimate details and even running her finger on BBT’s ZIPPER. Everything about the relationship was so OTT, like why? Don’t be surprised people are going to ask you about it.

It didn’t help that she kissed her brother. And not just once like people try to claim but twice on another press event (really awkard) and then they also posed for a magazine while kissing.

She was never a bad person but she didn’t have it all together and you can’t blame the media for zooming in on that when she loved her OTT PDA. She showed it to them, she knew the world was watching. It’s not like they went after her for no reason. Although I do think the claims of incest were just vile and they only went after BBT, nobody gives a crap that he was just as gross as she was. So yeah. Same for JLM, he also participated in her ‘craziness’ yet they don’t get the label ‘crazy’. It’s not fair. And then there’s the fact that they call a woman who might have mental health issues ‘crazy’ to start with, that’s not going to help.

        I agree with Kitten.

    • MtnRunner says:

      Yes to all this, Kitten.

    • Sullivan says:

Kitten: Your comment is so very spot-on.

    • Veronica says:

Aye, for somebody who grew up in the spotlight, she matured surprisingly well. The arrested development you’d expect isn’t anywhere obvious on her. I wonder if her humanitarian work or her kids are more responsible for that.

(I honestly believe she’s the more significant component of The Brange. Do we think he’d still be this interesting these days without her?)

      • I’m always a lot more interested in women, lol. Like it doesn’t even matter–I remember in middle school, I refused to read anything in the library that had a male main character…I always wanted to read about women. With gossip, it’s the same thing, which is why I think that *I* have a tendency to focus on the women…..

  4. InvaderTak says:

Still don’t get smugness or arrogance from him. Maybe I haven’t read enough.

    • anne says:

you know, neither do I. Even when I don’t agree with his opinions, I still feel that he expresses himself well. He’s got a philosophical bent, this guy – It may strike some people as pretentious, but I like him for it.

And I share his view of Angelina.

  5. lemon says:

    They totally did it.

  6. V4Real says:

This makes me like Ethan simply because what he said about AJ. Way too praise this not so minimally talented actress.

P.S. Love his hand placement on her body in that photo above.

    • Andrea1 says:

“This makes me like Ethan simply because what he said about AJ. Way too praise this not so minimally talented actress”………..THIS!

  7. Andrea1 says:

“It’s pretty awesome what she’s doing. People wanted her to be Marilyn Monroe. They wanted her to burn out. She was about as punk rock as a movie star could be. I loved her for it”.
Quote of the day…The man gives great interview you can’t deny that about him.

  8. Maya says:

No they never got together. He, Colin F and Olivier all wanted to get with her but she said no. Ethan had an affair with that Canadian woman instead.

    • bns says:

She definitely hooked up with Colin Farrell, though…

      • Maya says:

Nope she didn’t according to Colin himself. He said in an interview that he wanted to get with her but she firmly but nicely said no.

How about believing him instead of gossip?

  9. scout says:

    Amen, brother! You said it!

They do look like they got on very well. Haha…

  10. lower-case deb says:

i scrolled down so quick that i read “burn out like Marilyn Manson”.

and the split second composite face of Ethan superimposed with that of Manson is not something i want to see ever again.

  11. Renee says:

That picture of him with his hand on/above her ass never gets old 🙂

  12. tmbg says:

That photo of her with him is from when she was having some of the best fashion moments of her life. She wore jeans back then! I wonder why she doesn’t wear them now because they looked amazing on her.

I’ve wished people would take a break from the spotlight, but I wouldn’t wish what happened to Marilyn on anyone.

    • Tiffany says:

She mentioned in an interview a loooong time ago that she did not want to get lazy in her wardrobe choices so she ditched all of her jeans. She was doing more PR for her charities and she wanted to dress appropriately and left to her own devices she will wear jeans all the time. And now her loungewear is La Sackdress by Dame Jolie.

      • whatever says:

Seriously. She should go back to jeans and motorcycle jackets for casual. Or jeans and fitted blazers. Those sack dresses and baggy pants and skirts she wears with ugly tank tops for casual wear = such a waste on such a beautiful woman. Why can’t she just do some classic casual wear and not wear unstylish grandma stuff.

    • Mintessence (the original Minty) says:

Here’s the thing though: the tabloid narrative is that Marilyn was fired from her last movie, got into a depressive state, and either accidentally overdosed on drugs or committed suicide. The part that’s rarely talked about was that she was REHIRED to finish “Something’s Got To Give” soon after she had been fired, with a contract renewal and salary increase to $1 million for 2 films. She also was in talks about other future film projects, including a possible $10 million/4 film deal in Italy. Her good friend, makeup artist “Whitey” Snyder, who saw her during her last days, said she was in great spirits and was pleased by her available career opportunites. Furthermore, Marilyn was buying funiture and in the middle of decorating her house.

The suicide theory is suspicious, because someone intending to commit suicide would not be doing these things, i.e. making serious plans for the future. Her history of suicide attempts in the past were more likely cries for help, since there was always someone there to revive her or take her to the hospital. So we’re left with an accidental overdose or murder. I can’t discount murder because there was a lot of strange details about her death: her housekeeper, Eunice Murray, was washing sheets when the police arrived. Years later, after an interview, Murray was caught by microphone saying to herself, “Why, at my age, do I still have to cover this thing?”

The time when rigor mortis set in was later altered to match witness statements. The toxicology report showed the level of Nembutal and chloral hydrate in her system was enough to kill 10 people but there was no trace of capsule, powder, or the typical discoloration caused by Nembutal in her stomach and intestines. If Marilyn had taken the pills over a period of time (which might account for the lack of residue), she would have died before ingesting the amount found in her bloodstream. Also, it was ruled that intravenous injection could not have been used. Things don’t add up.

There is this repeated idea that Marilyn was a perpetual victim. She was not. She had to have strong inner resources to get to the top of the Hollywood heap, considering that she came from poverty, with no stable family support, and no connections. She had her issues, her ups-and-downs. She would get rejected, which happened quite frequently at the start of her career. She then would get depressed, but would pick herself up again after a short time. That was her pattern. Her firing was only temporary and though studio executives were antagonistic with her, she was very popular with the moviegoing public. The public often “forgave” her. During her battles with her employers for creative control, the studio usually backed down because of that public support. Executives didn’t want to alienate their box office moneymaker. I think she would have continued to find work or create work for herself. Don’t forget she was one of the first actresses – if not the first – to form her own production company. She was still head of that company when she died.

      • Cupcake says:

If it wasn’t pills or injection what was it?

      • siri says:

I believe she was a rather strong woman (very different from her image),and became dangerous to some people. Her biggest mistake was to get involved with the Kennedy’s. There wasn’t even water on her bedside table to take any pills. But, @Mintessence, there WAS discoloration in her intestines, which led to the only other possibility, next to injection, and pills: an enema. And that, automatically, would mean murder.

      • Mintessence (the original Minty) says:

@Cupcake: There is the enema theory, as siri mentioned. Donald Spoto, who wrote a serious MM biography, believes in this, though he thinks it was accidental overdose of drugs instead of murder. If you take Sylvia Browne seriously (and she’s been accurate about some things) – her claim is that Marilyn was murdered by hypodermic needle filled with Nembutal. Someone named “Dr. L” stuck the needle directly into her heart while she was groggy from taking too many pills. But then, why didn’t the coroner find that injection site?

@siri: Yes, I didn’t mention the empty glass found in her bedroom, that never had water. There was some renovation work on her house, so the water in her bathroom had been turned off. She couldn’t have swallowed all those pills without water. I double-checked the autopsy report and there was mention of purplish discoloration in her colon. Is that what you meant? Sylvia Browne wrote that Marilyn had a red book/diary in which she wrote her most confidential thoughts. Robert Kennedy and a few others knew of the diary and she had told RFK she was planning to reveal the contents to authorities. However, he had nothing to do with her death. What likely happened, according to Sylvia, was that RFK mentioned it to the wrong people, who decided to have Marilyn silenced.

  13. doofus says:

I thought they had pretty good chemistry in that movie, and based on that pic…

…I’d say they probably did “do it”. no biggie, they were both single at the time, right?

OT: I watched part of “Alexander” last night…DAMN, she was smokin’ in that movie, but her accent (where’s VC?…) was ATROCIOUS.

    • Lol, doofus. It WAS atrocious (no clue what she was trying to go for), but I LOVED her in that movie. I think I was in 9th when I started watching her movies (beyond Tomb Raider)–after about 20 minutes, I started skipping to all of her parts. I’m sorry, the movie itself was awful, and VERY disjointed.

About Ethan and Angelina–NOPE. He wasn’t single–he was still with Uma…technically. While they were filming in Canada, he got caught banging some Canadian chick/model…….if you go back and look at the last few times Ethan Hawke was talked about, you’ll see the comments about it. But he might’ve tried, who knows? We all know Colin Farrell did. I think he talked about her WAY too much while they were doing press for the movie, for her to have said yes. If it was me, I’d have kept my mouth shut.

And Lol–I just watched “Taking Lives” a few nights ago–it’s on Netflix. I love that movie!

      • doofus says:

“disjointed” is a good word for it. bf wanted to watch the battle/fighting scenes so we had it on for a bit. the narration, the jumping back and forth in time…I didn’t like it.

didn’t realize Hawke was still (as you said) “technically” with Thurman. maybe they were one of those couples that was definitely over, but didn’t make any announcements or moves to split until they were ready. because I STILL think they got busy…

      • I tend not to believe it, because he’s always talking about her. Johnny Lee Miller and Angelina were banging for YEARS after their divorce. And I’d believe that they were discussing getting back together (until Brad, lol). Johnny has said jack shit about Angelina to the press. I think the last thing I ever heard him say about her, was when “Elementary” first came out–I think he went on The View, and they asked him about being married to Angelina, and he made a joke about being known as Angelina’s ex husband. Other than that it’s been crickets. Ethan Hawke won’t shut up about her….I bet you he tried though, lol.

So, in conclusion doofus–when I finally stop yammering on and on about Liam Neeson, know that I am hitting that Irish Thunder, lol.

    • mia girl says:

@doofus “OT: I watched part of “Alexander” last night…DAMN, she was smokin’ in that movie, but her accent (where’s VC?…) was ATROCIOUS. ”

So did I! My teen daughter asked me to stop as we were flipping channels so she could see a “younger” Jolie (who yes, SO SO beautiful).

And when she spoke (the big conflict seen with Colin), my daughter about fell off the couch. She could not fathom how the director let Jolie perform with that accent.

      • doofus says:

and it wasn’t just that it was bad and…unidentifiable?…it would come and go. some of her lines would start with the accent at full tilt and by the end of the line she’d sound like herself (non-accent).

it’s such a hard thing to do. I remember my mother laughing at how bad Michael Caine’s accent was in some movie. and I always consider him to be one of the best actors/character actors in the biz…if HE has a hard time with it, who wouldn’t?

(well…ONE guy who can do it is Idris Elba. When I first saw The Wire, I had NO idea that he was a Brit!)

      • mia girl says:

Yes! It got to the point where AJ’s accent veered into comical, like she was going for an exaggeration of how Vlad the Impaler might speak. It’s a shame, because the performance itself was fine.

Funny, I also thought that Idris was American when I watched the Wire. Dominic West mastered the accent too. Overall, I think most English actors can handle the American accent quite well. Think about Hugh Laurie in House or the fact that most people still think Robert Pattinson is American based on the accent he’s used in films.

Although, remarking on AJ’s accent my daughter said that for her, the only accent attempt worse was Emma Watson’s American accent in Perks of a Wallflower. So maybe not all Brits…

To sustain an accent in a performance must be tough. I supposed Meryl is one of the few who really nails it most of the time.

    • DJ says:

Of course she banged him! In 2004, I think Jolie would have banged anything with two legs and a d**k.

      • She was very open about having casual sex with multiple partners, that she would not introduce to her son, at the time. She said they met in motel rooms. Colin Farrell said on national tv that he wanted to date her, and she said that she didn’t think of him that way. When they were filming Taking Lives, there were no credible rumors about her and Ethan Hawke, especially since Hawke was banging some Canadian model–which was the public end of him and Uma.

  14. Adiellybelly says:

Yes. He’s super dirty sexy to me. Their sex scene in taking lives. Yum

  15. whatever says:

I love Ethan Hawke. Not even a little embarassed to say it. Yeah, he’s a bit pompous at times, but so what? He is actually smart, actually cares about what he is doing, and actually does interesting work. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it flops, but he’s a risk taker. He’s also married to an interesting woman who is also educated and runs a not-for-profit organization. I think he is also a person of substance, and I’m into it.

Also, yeah, I was in my early twenties when Reality Bites and Before Sunrise came out and I loved him then and still can’t help loving him now. And all the Sunrise movies and Boyhood are amazing and he was a big part of that. It’ll take a lot to dislodge that love. Even though yeah he’s a little rough looking now. So what. So am I 20 years later.

    • jammypants says:

I feel the same about him and Edward Norton. Both a bit egotistical, but honest.

      • YES, about Edward Norton as well. I am a little ashamed of myself for checking him out even in American History X…..he was freaking hot in that movie, and one of the few that (I’ve seen) he was meant to be ‘sexy’ in, I think…..he’s a great actor. Too bad he had an ego the size of a planet.

      • mayamae says:

God, I love Edward Norton! He’s kind of nerdy but cute and tall. Loved him in The Painted Veil.

      • jammypants says:

Norton is a cutie patootie when he’s not being an ass.

  16. Jayna says:

I miss punk rock Angie. I never thought she would lose it all and not keep just a little bit of that side to her. You evolve and don’t stay stuck, I get that, but just a little bit here and there on her off days would be nice instead of Angie in her sack dresses.

  17. perplexed says:

I never gave much thought to how I thought Angelina Jolie would turn out. I thought she was a decent actress, but I didn’t put thought into how I thought she should evolve. Maybe the media wanted something from her, but sometimes actors talk in a way that makes it seem as though regular people are thinking about what they do as celebrities every waking minute.

    • Renee says:

I want to click the like button for your comment.

    • Esmom says:

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. His whole “People wanted…” immediately made me think “what people?” Hollywood people? Media people?

  18. lisa2 says:

he’s right a lot of people wanted and still want her to crash and burn.

Great that she is not giving them what they want.

  19. lucy2 says:

I think that’s kind of a common thing with people who become famous early and are a bit wild or different – they get built up and then everyone waits for the crash. And a lot of them do crash, it’s definitely more rare to come through it ok and start a new phase of life.

  20. Josefa says:

I like Ethan for all those same reasons. He can be bitchy and gross – but I appreciate that. He speaks his mind, even if it makes people angry. And really – I don’t think he’s ever said anything uncalled for or anything. He just doesn’t sugarcoat his opinions with dumb word games and euphemisms.

  21. Toni says:

Ethan has that look Angie seemed to be always attracted too: rugged, rough cut ,weather beaten, biker boy type. Billy Boy Thornton,Johnny Lee Miller, Unbroken costar, Jack O’Connell, Johnny Depp, and even Jenny Shimitsu all have that same type of look. Brad is doing his best to be that but somehow it doesn’t come off as genuine on him. But yeah Ethan is still carrying a torch for her!

  22. Penelope says:

Love Ethan. He’s a breath of fresh, honest air in the phony world of Hollyweird. And ITA with what he said about AJ.

  23. Anna says:

Weird. I don’t care for Ethan Hawke as an actor so I don’t watch (many) of his movies. I’d never even HEARD of Taking Lives until it came up as a suggestion on Netflix and I watched it yesterday. lol

    • whatever says:

How was it? I’m tempted but am unsure if it’s worth the time and money. However, now that I’m imagining Ethan and Angie doing it as a result of the sexy embrace in that bottom photo, maybe it’s worth it for the fantasy potential alone?

      • You mean to watch on Netflix? If you have Netflix, then you don’t have to pay for it.

I really liked the movie, and plus it has Olivier back when he was hot, hot, hot!

      • Anna says:

I’m on the fence—I don’t think I would have watched it had it not been free on Netflix but it wasn’t horrible or anything. I’d watch it again. Like if I went over to someone’s house and they had it on TV, I’d hang out. lol

      • @Anna
I know what you mean. It wasn’t a groundbreaking, total arthouse movie–it was a nice thriller. I liked it a lot better on netflix, because I am the Queen of Subtitles–before I had watched it on my computer and got frustrated because I could barely hear what they were saying….but that’s why I like Angelina’s movies. I don’t think she always does the best films ever, but I think that she always makes her role stand out. There are only a few of her movies that I hated, and wouldn’t ever watch again–or that were boring. That’s the worst thing for me. I get bored in films/tv VERY easily, so it’s hard for me not to start skipping…

On that note, I watched Zodiac, and while I liked it, I felt like the movie was pointless. I guess the point was how the Zodiac Killer tied everyone in knots for YEARS…but I don’t feel like I learned anything from it.

  24. MJ says:

He looks like he wants to eat her up in that photo of the two of them. She looks pretty friendly there, too.

  25. Misprounced Name Dropper says:

Watched Boyhood a couple of days ago and thought it was very good. As an aside, I reckon Ethan Hawke and Kevin Dillon are very similar looking. I’d like to see them play brothers in a film.

  26. Kim1 says:

Angie and Brad just arrived at AFI event.Unbroken is at $100.2M Worldwide at Boxoffice.com
    All is Good

  27. Dawn says:

Well there for a moment it looked like she might but I think Maddox sort of settled her down and she found another calling and she went for the mother role instead. Good for her I say.

  28. Newgirl says:

It looks like he really wanted her. Lol he is gross hot though.

  29. Nibbi says:

I dig that he wanted her like that (his appreciation for her in that photo is undeniable) and that i really don’t think she went there. The way he still talks about her sort of tells me she didn’t. Just cuz she’s friendly with him back in the photo means nothin’ peeps, i think she’s just always been totally comfortable in her man-melting power 🙂 🙂

  30. Ceeteefeebs says:

What could be more punk than seeing what’s wrong with the world and caring enough to try to change it? I guess I never subscribed to the notion that the nihilists cornered the market re: the punk scene. Let’s not confuse the “punk” uniform, substance abuse, and nihilism for the heart and soul of punk. I think that Joe Strummer is somewhere in the universe smiling down on Ms. Jolie in all her evolved punkness.

  31. Reg says:

As I remember it uma Thurman filed for divorce after that movie, so it wasn’t just the nanny involved
    Case closed…..
