Maggie Gyllenhaal in rose-colored Miu Miu: frumpy or an improvement?

Maggie Gyllenhaal

Maggie Gyllenhaal took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Mini-Series for her role in The Honorable Woman. She walked the red carpet with her brother, Jake, and they were each other’s dates. I could swear Jake uttered the words “sugar pie, honey bunch” when humoring Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet, but maybe I imagined it. Did you hear it?

Maggie’s dress is Miu Miu. I’m not wild about the boob darting or the mini peplum, but this is one of the better dresses we’ve seen from Maggie. That’s not saying much, I know. Her posture lets me know she’s not very comfy glamming it up. The dusky rose color looks fantastic with her complexion, but her hair is … still bad. She could have gone a little spikey and had some fun for the event. Maggie did give a great speech last night:

“I’ve noticed a lot of people talking about the wealth of roles for powerful women in television lately. And when I look around the room at these women who are in here and I think about the performances that I’ve watched this year, what I see actually are women are sometimes powerful and sometimes not; sometimes sexy, sometimes not; sometimes honourable and sometimes not. And what I think is new is the wealth of roles for actual women in television and in film. That’s what I think is revolutionary, and evolutionary, and it’s what’s turning me on.”

I agree with her when it comes to television. Film roles for women still have a long way to go, but these past few years have brought us much more interesting and complex female characters on tv. Congrats to Maggie!

Maggie Gyllenhaal

Taylor Schilling wore a red Ralph Lauren gown that looked like a Valentine’s decoration. This dress looked really cute from the back (but only from the waist up). From the front, the cross halter looked too tight, and her hair was pulled back severely. Maybe I’d have liked the dress more if the halter was drapier. Oh, and super eyebrow powers activate!

Uzo Aduba slayed in a very glam Randi Rahm dress and Brian Atwood shoes. I can’t find anything wrong with anything she wore. This is perfection.

Laura Prepon went a little too dark in this Christian Siriano dress. If her hair was red, the dress may have worked, but her black hair and black dress are blending into an inky mess. Laura wore Simon G. jewelry, and I want her to bring back the red.

Laura Prepon

Amanda Peet … words fail me. I don’t know what look she was going for, but this was some serious Three’s Company lampshade fug.

Maggie’s dress looked better on the Teevee. She was adorable and so was Jake.

    • Kitten says:

Why is Jake always frowning these days? Seriously, at every premiere or carpet, he has that cranky look on his face.

Has he always been this way? Because I’m remembering him as a funny, smiley, light-hearted guy…

      • Kiddo says:

He was smiling during her speech. Maybe the bright lights bother his eyes? Don’t know McKittle.

      • AG-UK says:

That could be it as he wears contacts too.

Aaah my 2nd husband is still very handsome. I hate they didn’t show it here so I could tape it.. ughghghghghghg I don’t mind her dress, I loved her in that show she was brilliant actually they all were.

      • someonestolemyname says:

        Taylor Schilling looks amazing!
Maggie looks nice, but it’s a bit bridesmaidsy 1990’s. She’s lovely though.

        Laura needs a better stylist.

    • Anony says:

She IS adorable but man I hate her dress choice. Can’t take eyes off of weird boob darting.

  2. Marianne says:

Maggie looked nice. And its certainly better than a lot of stuff she’s worn. But it was also a little boring.

Taylor could have looked amazeballs if it was a different material.

I did really like Laura’s look even if it was a tad Mortica Addams-esque.

Uzo looks nice, but I don’t know the dress wasn’t spectacular to me.

  3. tifzlan says:

Yup, Uzo KILLED IT. I love Maggie Gyllenhaal, pixie cut and everything.

    • ichsi says:

My favourites were Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone and, yep, Uzo Aduba. Her look was absolutely flawless, SO beautiful! She doesn’t have one of those standard-issued petite Hollywood actress bodies yet she looked better than almost all of them.

      • tifzlan says:

I’d say my top 3 were Diane Kruger, Emma Stone and Uzo Aduba! She’s very athletic. I go to Boston University – her alma mater – and if i’m not mistaken, she was a star track runner or track athlete of some sort.

    “Three’s Company Lampshade Fug”

    That made my afternoon 🙂

  5. GingerCrunch says:

I’ve been a short-hair gal most of my life and my thought is maybe it’s time for Maggie to grow it out? It just makes me wince for some reason. Not loving the dress. She’s a doll, though!

    This Uzo person…STUNNING!!!

  6. Grace says:

Maggie needs to fork up a few dollars and buy a bra. There is no reason why her boobs need to hit her bro’s hips. Take a look at Jessica Chastain, Maggie!! Otherwise she looks ok. Kind of Meh

    • tealily says:

Yeah, the saggy boobs are my only problem with the look. The dress is fine and the color is lovely on her… maybe just need some straps or something.

  7. QQ says:

Maggie and Amanda Peet are soul sisters at dressing bad and Ill fitting so This dress on Maggie was legit like a 1000 Yard Improvement (whereas in anyone else it would have been Extra Meh?!)

Taylor Schilling never does a Thing for me.. Laura Prepon.. Im on My knees Begging you to change that hair color that looks like a bad box job

    Uzo KILLEDDDDDDD It for me

    • tifzlan says:

Schilling never does a thing for me too and honestly? She is easily the weakest link on OITNB, no question.

      • QQ says:

Jenji Kohan said she is basically a Trojan horse premise to tell the less bland more out the mainstream girls’ stories

      • tifzlan says:

Ahhh, okay that makes sense. I always tune out whenever she’s on screen with her stupid Larry-Alex dilemma that no one cares about.

  8. Godwina says:

OK, here’s my general thing re the Globes gowns this time around. Normally, at these awards shows, there are several gowns worn so wonderfully that I die of envy and admiration and drool a little too much. I get off on them, as do so many of us. But this time? I scrolled through the red carpet photos last night (100+) and seriously everything was hideous, meh, or ill-fitting in some way. There isn’t a single “wow” for me this time. I’m not sure what’s going on…

  9. Dani says:

Amanda Peete looks like a walking drug addict

  10. Janet says:

I never heard of Uzo before but my God, she looked gorgeous!

  11. jasmine says:

jake was such a sweetheart!!! he was taking tons of pics with fans while maggie was getting interviewed, then he was just humbly standing there supporting his sister and watching lovingly while she gave her speech!! omg how cute is he!!!

I still don’t know how to quit you, jake!

    • Amber says:

I swear every time they cut to the Gyllenhaals they were only talking to each other. Like other people would instantly be across the room the second they went to commercial. But Jake and Maggie were having their own party. Also Jake gets bonus points for being the only nominee who looked at all ok with Eddie’s win or he faked it the best. The others fell on a range of clearly gutted to pissed.

  12. Carrie says:

    She’s nothing if not consistent.

  13. Amy Tennant says:

I actually love Laura’s look, and I’m not someone who usually has strong opinions about anything fashion-related. Actually, I suspect I have no style and am therefore wrong, but I think she looks gorgeous. I think all the OITNB actresses killed it.

  14. minime says:

I think Maggie looks nice. She doesn’t seem to be the kind of person to wear fluffy or over-statement clothes. She is also such a complete actress! I’m sure she’s one of the few that will still be working in big projects 10, 20, and more years from now.

Uzo Aduba looks gorgeous in this dress. Perfect choice. Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon should have asked her for help when they chose their dresses.

  15. lunchcoma says:

Yeah, Maggie’s gown leaves a lot to be desired. Loved her speech, though. I think she’s one of the people who can see clearly what the specific problems are with the writing for women in media, rather than just seeing that there’s been a general problem with there not being enough good roles. It’s not just enough to have strong women. Men’s roles are all over the map. Roles for women (and for people of color) won’t be equal until there’s similar diversity available. I’d say roles for women took a step forward this year.

  16. Addison DeWitt says:

I found Laura Prepon’s look to be very lovely. I didn’t think I would like her with such dark hair but she is owning it well. And this gown is amazing on her.

    • PattyCakes says:

Agree! This is the best I’ve seen her look in a long time. Somehow her brows don’t look too villain-y here, which is awesome and IMO a large contrast from her OITNB look. The hair is quite dark but I love that skin pallor + dark hair combo.

  17. minx says:

I hate MG’s hair, so frumpy. The dress wasn’t bad, compared to her usual getups, but the color looked 80s to me.

  18. Diana B says:

Uzo was perfection. Maggie has such a strange face. When she was giving her speach I just kept thinking “what an odd face” Jake looked as handsome as ever

  19. phlyfiremama says:

I usually love Maggie’s style but this dress makes her boobs look like they are sagging down to her waist. Given that she isn’t amply endowed, that takes some effort!!

  20. Greek Chic says:

Is it just me or Maggie looks like 80 years old? Her skin is not bad but her face reminds me of an old lady. Don’t like her dress either.
