Julianne Moore in custom Givenchy at the Globes: much better than usual?

Julianne Moore was a big winner last night for Best Actress in a Drama. I’m hoping that she’s a sure thing for the Oscar too. Julianne actually went for a decent red carpet look with this custom Givenchy. As we all know, Julianne’s taste level is not where it should be, and I’ve had a hate-on for her red carpet style for years. But I’m okay with this. Do I think the feathers are overkill? Sure. But I’m okay with it.

Dakota Johnson wore another sparkly Chanel, and here’s what’s bugging me lately: why are all of the red-carpet Chanel looks we seen recently so poorly tailored? This doesn’t fit Dakota’s bust. Why does Karl Lagerfeld hate boobs? Also: BANGS TRAUMA.

I’m putting Viola Davis and Allison Janney together because they were sitting together and they both freaked out when Prince came out. It was glorious. Viola is wearing a beautiful Lola Falana gown and Allison is kind of meh in Ella Zahlan.

Pick of the Post: Viola Davis, duh. She’s gorgeous and that color just pops off her skin.

Also, that Vine is giving me life this morning.

  2. Dani2 says:

Viola looks so crazy good here. Julianne looks much better than usual.

    The others are okay.

    • taxi says:

For Julianne, this so much better than her usual strangely-off attire than I forgive the feathers. Viola looks great too – many of her red carpets were often spoiled by her wet underarm circles, so maybe strapless is the way for her to go from now on.

  3. yael says:

i actually love allison’s dress. she looks smashing.

eta: i love their reactions to prince walking out. cutecutecute.

    • manta says:

Agree about Allison Janney. I think she looked really good and the high slit on the dress (not visible in the picture here) prevented the look to be meh.

  4. Dante says:

I want to know what muppet died for the bottom of that dress but still, given her usual, this is a slow crawl in the right direction. From the waist up it’s all good.

    • Rachel says:

For me, it’s just too much. It could have been a decent dress if it had the sequins OR the feathers. But the sequins into feathers is just overkill.

  5. hindulovegod says:

Julianne Moore was my favorite of the night. I acknowledge that it is due, at least in part, to the happy surprise of her looking good. She set her bar for success low.

  6. nina says:

i agree with the too tight bust on dakota’s dress, but the bottom part is gorgeous imo!

  7. Mrs. Darcy says:

I don’t mind the feathers, they are a bit muppet-y but stop the dress looking like a shiny statue. I like the ombre effect too, a big improvement for her in general. I don’t love her hair, I think they were going for mermaid-y but it looks slightly ratty. I really love Julianne but I think Rosamund deserves to win this year (Julianne should have won for Boogie Nights, safe, etc.), sadly the film isn’t Oscar bait-y enough it would seem and the momentum is not in her favor so I don’t think she will. Love Viola and Allisons’ Prince reaction!

  8. Lama Bean says:

OMG viola. Her last two wigs have been on point and not overwhelming. Her last two dresses have been amaze balls. She looks gorgeous.

    • PunkyMomma says:

      Totally agree about Viola.

    • whatever says:

Viola does look gorgeous – great face, hair and colour. And the top of the dress is great. But from a fashion perspective I’m so bored of all those long, a-line ball gown type skirts, especially when they have a train. So bo-ring. Imagine if it had been a long fitted column, or tea length allowing a little of those killer gams to show? Or even something fashion forward? My god, the style last night for the most part was so mini-van majority girl next door safe. Snooze.

    • Diana B says:

      Viola for the win!

    • Janet says:

Viola totally killed it. Whoever snarked that she is not classically beautiful can KMBA. I think “classically beautiful” is boring anyway. She looked drop-dead gorgeous.

  9. Marianne says:

I really liked Julianne’s dress. So fun. In my top 10, but not my top 5.

    The rest, meh.

  10. Lahdidahbaby says:

Omggg poor Julianne! I love her but thar ill-fitting, ill-chosen dress made her look like an 80-year-old docent at the opening of the Museum of Mediocrity. Beside her, even Dakota looked good from the waist down.

    • PunkyMomma says:

I hated this dress. Completely. Julianne looks like a disco ball.

      • mimif says:

I love disco balls. Which might be why I kind of love both Julianne & Dakota’s looks, which also means I need to immediately go to my balloon.

    • Janet says:

Feathers belong in pillows, not on dresses. The top two-thirds of the dress looked good. The feathers on the bottom ruined it.

  11. MinnFinn says:

Julianne’s hair – looks like they forgot to style the bottom half of her hair. Not loving the purse with that dress. And I’m torn about her dress. Is it a hand-me-down from a 7 ft tall Vegas show girl or did an ostrich roll in glitter?

I love Dakota’s dress. The bottom looks like Christmas tinsel but somehow it’s playful but not cheesy or tacky. Not a dress most could pull off.

  12. kri says:

Liked all four of these looks, but the most beautiful thing in the multiverse was Prince! Everyone was dying-it was awesome. He makes so happy! JM’s dress was good, Dakota’s was stunning (she on the other hand was not) and Viola looked delicious.

  13. Grace says:

I loved Viola’s dress but I can’t handle her wigs. They just make everything look so awful. She looks gorgeous when she is wigless. I loved Dakota’s and Julianne’s dresses but they both needed new hairdo’s as well.

  14. AntiSocialButterfly says:

Julianne- gah. Yes, better than usual. Beautiful lady, but this does her no justice. Extreme side part & messy ends. Silver washes out her super fair skin. Poorly fitted…and feathers.

Dakota- another poor fit. The skirt looks like old tin Christmas tree tinsel from the 1970s.

Allison- not the best hairstyle for the dress, make up iffy, but the dress is the most flattering out of the bunch.

Viola- Gorgeous lady, beautiful styling, beautiful color with her skin tone, perfect make up,but not a particularly flattering fit.

  15. boredblond says:

Hoping Julianne will get her over due Oscar and will be wearing something elegantly classy..well, I can hope…

  16. Jo says:

Dakota Johnson looks dead behind the eyes!

  17. Snazzy says:

Considering Karl’s latest looks – I think it’s not just boobs he hates …

  18. QQ says:

    LOVED Viola!! WHOOO!!

This is better than Julianne’s Usual by Miles so I’ll take it!!

The Dakota dress looked so… Like someone took shredding scissors to a Length of Sequins fabric and then decided to Toga It Up.. and Like that Someone was Dakota Herself and then she didn’t sleep all night and now it shows

  19. scout says:

    Viola looks great.

  20. manta says:

And since she was in the audience, how did Cindy C. react when Prince appeared on stage?

It must have brought back terrific memories to her!

  21. Otaku fairy says:

I like Dakota Johnson’s dress- it makes me think of something a pop star would wear to the grammys.

  22. minime says:

Wow Viola looks really good! Love red on her.

Dakota Johnson is also a surprise. I might me be in the minority but I think this is the best she has ever looked. Surprisingly this colour looks quite good on her.

  23. mia25 says:

I really love how Dakota Johnson looks here. To me, the dress and the way she is wearing it is lovely.

  24. lunchcoma says:

Huge improvement for her. I like the feathers!

  25. GiGi says:

Also – way to promote your movie (such as it is) Dakota & Jamie, by showing your absolute 0% chemistry last night.

  26. jenni12 says:

Completely agree- what is up with all the poor tailoring?? Julianne Moore looks like an Ice Capades skater.

  27. Greek Chic says:

    Love julianne’s dress. Really pretty.
Dakota dress is also gorgeous…it would look amazing on someone with a more eathereal beauty like Vanessa Paradis. But still she looks the best that I have ever seen.
Viola looks always pretty in bright colors, love her look.

  28. Camille (The Original) says:

I think Julianne looked gorgeous and she was my favourite look of the night. And I’m so happy she won! I hope she wins all of the best actress awards this season.

  29. I Choose Me says:

Two of my favourite actresses of all time together. Add their reaction to Prince and my day is complete.

  30. WTF says:

OMG!! I just want to be Viola Davis. She is STUNNING.
I hate Allison Janey’s dress, but can we just take a minute to discuss what deal she’s made with the devil? How the hell has she not aged since the West Wing? and her body is SICK. 6 feet of absolute bad-assery
