Sean Penn doesn’t miss his 65 guns: ‘Guns are not something to be missed’

I keep forgetting that Sean Penn now does an annual Haiti fundraiser during Golden Globes weekend. He’s been doing it for years now, although I guess we missed these photos because… BAFTA LA event, Golden Globes, The Art of Elysium, etc. So, here are some photos of Charlize Theron and Sean last Saturday. They ended up raising $6 million for Sean’s J/P Haitian Relief Organization, so that’s nice. There was an auction with stuff like “Rachel Zoe’s styling help” and a private Coldplay concert (that went for $400,000).

At last year’s fundraiser, Sean revealed that the love of a good woman (Charlize) had convinced him to give up his 65 GUNS. Sean gave the guns to Jeff Koons, who had them melted down into some kind of giant sculpture, which was then auctioned off. At this year’s event, Sean talked about how he’s really not missing his 65 guns.

It sounds like Sean Penn has given up guns for good. It was at his annual pre-Golden Globes gala for J/P HRO that he revealed that girlfriend Charlize Theron convinced him to have his collection of nearly 65 firearms turned into a sculpture by artist Jeff Koons and then auctioned off for the Haiti relief organization. Penn told me at this year’s benefit on Saturday night that he’s not missing the weapons.

“I think guns are not something to be missed,” he said. “Especially, on a serious note, when we talk about it this week [and] this tragic thing that happened in Paris. I’d like to see more guns go to sculpture. I’d like to see it happen. I don’t know that we’ve come to a time where we can be a gunless society, but we’re certainly not working the way we’re flying with them.”

[From E! News]

What’s weird is that I believe him. I actually believe that Charlize Theron’s love has made Sean Penn calm down. He’s not into guns anymore. He’s not punching paparazzi anymore. He’s babyproofing his house. He’s planning on a future with Charlize’s son Jackson. Call me crazy, but I think Sean really loves her.

… Of course, I also think some of Sean’s old angst and anger has been transferred over to Charlize. Look at her! She’s at a charity event for her lover and she looks like she’s about to claw someone’s eyes out.

“I prefer my fists and a bat instead!”

Guns or no guns, Penn is abusive scum. Run Charlize, you in trouble girl.

  2. Bernice says:

I hope this relationship stays on track. He is a hot-head and she had an abusive father. It makes me nervous……

  3. als says:

Charlize always looks like she is about to claw someone’s eyes out…and maybe this is how Penn likes them, I think Robin Wright has a similar attitude.

    • magda says:

I always get that vibe from Robin Wright too.

    • Esmom says:

Ha, I’d never made that connection but you are right. Interesting.

    • santana says:

I guess that both Robin and Sean have very strong personalities and both went on after the divorce searching for the younger versions of the other one. Ben Foster is an intense talented guy and Charlize physically resembles Robin and have a strong personality too. I’m so glad that Robin and Ben got back together, I somehow couldn’t understand when she called it off, and had the feeling that wasn’t really over.

  4. Dani2 says:

Good for him. I completely agree.

  5. *About to gross myself and all of you out*

I guess his D must be magnificently HUGE, because THAT FACE. OMFG. He looks like he got into a fight with Satan and won….and then came back to see us.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Lol. Can you imagine a woman that, shall we say, unconventional looking having his level of success?

    • Beep says:

      Lmao

he looks better than he has in a long time to me.I think he must be using something to tame his wrinkles because they don’t look as deep as before.

  6. Kiddo says:

Anyone have a link to the sculpture? That’s a really interesting concept and I like that it was auctioned off for charity.

    • Esmom says:

It is a really interesting concept, I love the symbolism. And it’s not often that someone with so many guns makes such a turnaround so I have to given him kudos for that.

So 65 guns gone, only 2.99 million to go. Sigh. And I didn’t mean to imply that someone was “coming to get them.” Just to be clear.

    • Birdix says:

I’m interested too–I wonder if he’s made it yet, and I wonder where Anderson Cooper will put it–too big for a NY apartment?

      • Esmom says:

I have a feeling AC has more than one residence. And that his apt in NY is likely way larger than my house. At least his mom’s is/was.

  7. Ginger says:

Charlize suffers from resting bitch face. Doesn’t she look this way most of the time? Or maybe she hates red carpets or something.

  8. Duckie says:

I can’t get over the fact that his abusive past is well known, still it rarely gets brought up and he still gets accolades. And I’m not talking about CB, but mainstream media in general.

    • I think if the internet/blogs had been huge back then, then a lot more stuff would’ve been covered/known. Like my dad’s 37, and it’s only been in the past 10-12 years that he regularly used a personal computer. I think that’s partly why the Brad/Jennifer/Angelina triangle still goes on with the media–look at CB’s archives….goes all the way back to 2006. That’s right around the time a lot of the gossip blogs started.

Specifically with Penn–a lot of it is word of mouth stuff that we remember. Like I remember when I first googled the stuff that he did to Madonna–I only found a link to a book that had been written by her former assistant/publicist (SOMEONE associated with Madonna), and that was about it. And Sean Penn isn’t a huge deal anymore–if he was, they’d be bringing it up in every article they ever wrote about him.

I remember saving up for my first PC and was pumped that it had a — wait for it! — color monitor! An Intel 8088, b*tches!

    • homegrrrl says:

I loathe the abusive “do gooder” in particular who recruits a new woman to make the previous one appear lazy. Hey look at me EVERYONE, I’m the good guy.

The new recruit’s esteem is built upon being “the right one” who brought out “the right man”
How was Robyn Wright’s career when she was with SP? Oh that’s right. ..HE was her career. Hmmmm. The new woman walks on eggshells and throws her own personality down the toilet. Hence the “Charlize/Robyn” face.

  9. D says:

“He’s not into guns anymore. He’s not punching paparazzi anymore”

Let’s hope he’s not into punching his wives (or beating them with baseball bats, or sexually assaulting them) anymore either.

  10. scout says:

Good for Charlize, she has had a hard former years. Her mom shot her dad dead in South Africa when Charlize was a teenager. Mom was acquitted of murder charges claiming self defense, which was true. Charlize had a drunk and very abusive father. Her mom lives here now in US, I think married too.
Sean Penn is lucky to have her around. I am happy to hear that all guns are gone and he is continuing his charity work still. Hope they have a good life, both deserve it.

  11. teatimeiscoming says:

sounds like she’s repeating part of her history, here. for everyone’s sake involved, let’s hope im wrong. (I mean, maybe that’s why Sean’s glad the guns are gone?)

    • Chrissy says:

I hope she thinks good and hard about how this relationship
is affecting her son. Especially given, not only Sean’s
      history, but also his son’s
racist views. Sadly Jackson has no say in any of this. Team Jackson.

  12. Tara says:

Enough with assuming she’s angry just because that’s how her face looks when she’s not smiling. She has resting bitchface. She can’t help it. She naturally has an intimidating look. The most beautiful one in the business at that.

  13. Jayna says:

She’s just posing on the red carpet. It’s better than that Jennifer Lopez squinty eyes/mouth-half-parted look she gives red carpet after red carpet.

I think Charlize has been a good influence on Sean. I give Sean credit about Haiti. He walks the walk on Haiti, not just throwing a few dollars at it and going down there for a photo-op. He is hands on down there. He was living down there many months on end at a time, going back and forth repeatedly, working amongst the people trying to help rebuild Haiti, and still trying to help, still involved. I have a feeling that involvement has also changed him. It’s hard to go around angry all the time when you are down there dealing with people just trying to survive through another night whether homeless, medical needs, hunger, you name it. He helped implement programs and efforts that have made a huge difference down there and still are making a huge difference. When you read what he has accomplished and how hands on he was and still all he is doing, your opinion changes about him.

And he’s a complicated guy, but I think Charlize likes that. And I think Sean always needs a strong woman. It seems to be the type he picks.
I don’t think he went around hitting his ex-wife nor Charlene because of an incident with Madonna. But I do I think his volatile verbal anger is what needed to change and is what destroyed his marriage to Robin.

    • Jayna says:

      “Charlene.” I meant Charlize.

    • siri says:

We could also just acknowledge, that people actually DO change, and become wiser. I never really thought he’s a bad guy at heart, but he made huge mistakes. However, the charity work he does for a long time, and without talking to the press about it all the time, is impressive, and deserves applause.

  14. MrsBPitt says:

Kaiser…You really need to put one of those black bars across Penn’s face….I’m trying to eat here!!!!

  15. Zigggy says:

This may be controversial, but I like my gun collection… I find comfort in the fact that if someone broke into my home to harm me I at least have a slight chance of getting into my safe and defending my family. I wish that I could legally carry a gun, so that if someone tried to kidnap/rape/harm me while I’m out walking I would at least have a chance. (not to mention if I were a hostage or witness to terrorist violence, maybe I could make a difference and save some lives…)

    • ORLY says:

How common are home invasions in the US? I see people referring to defending their homes as a reason for gun ownership but I rarely see anything in the news about home invasions. Is it very common and just not reported much?
I’m not arguing against you owning guns, just curious.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m 58 and have never known personally or known of anyone who was a victim of a home invasion, though I’m sure it happens.

      • ORLY says:

That’s what I thought, GNAT. I keep wondering whose home is getting broken into that so many people need guns to protect theirs.

      • Esmom says:

I don’t think home invasions are all that common although recently there were a small rash of them in my town. The perpetrators were caught after stealing some laptops and miscellaneous stuff. They had no weapons nor did the homeowners deploy any weapons. No lives lost thankfully and everyone got their stuff back.

One neighbor, who was one of the victims, posted about it on FB. She said she felt icky and violated and terrified (she was in the house when it happened, the guys ran out after they heard her footsteps upstairs) but that it never occurred to her that she wished she had a gun.

But people can be fearful/paranoid and goodness knows the gun lobby sure knows how to prey on that.

      • My cousin told me about one in Texas–it was a (married) woman and her baby. Two men broke into her house in the middle of the day, so she ran upstairs with the baby, locked her bedroom door, and called her husband and 911. They had a shotgun in the room. She had the shotgun out, and the two men were BREAKING DOWN the door to the room she was in—so when they broke down the door, she shot and killed one of them, and the other one ran. And the family of the man that she shot and killed is suing HER. Which is a freaking joke.

But I’ve never known anyone personally who had their house broken into while they were still there.

    • siri says:

I personally would not feel more safe with guns near me, or knowing that my neighbours have them. There are also too many incidents where kids find them, play with them, and kill a family member/themselfs by accident. To have guns “just in case” I truly don’t understand. Nobody in my circle of friends/family/neighbours has any. But again, that’s just MY understanding.

  16. leokessler says:

sounds like a sweet collection. wish I could afford that many. Right now I’m at about ten. Plus my daughters have two each, and wifey has one.
