Russell Brand may play Johnny Depp’s brother in new ‘Pirates’ film

After the mind-blowing success of the Pirates or the Caribbean trilogy, producers of course wanted to milk the franchise for even more money. Depp signed on for a fourth movie, with what was most likely the biggest paycheck of his career. And like all dying franchises, producers are bringing in even more talent in an attempt to widen the franchise appeal. Some brilliant would-be casting news from series: British comedian Russell Brand playing the long-lost brother of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp)… which would mean Russell would also be the “son” of Keith Richards. Yep, that makes perfect sense.

The problem is that Russell is an in-demand actor. Brand spoke to Access Hollywood (quotes via Cinema Blend) about how he has “eight” other projects in the works, and he might not have time to play Johnny Depp’s brother. Here’s more from Cinema Blend:

Russell Brand, whom you probably know best as the brain-dead rocker who gets to bang Veronica Mars in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, has been heavily rumored to be a part of the upcoming fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Someone finally thought to ask him what he thought of being in a Johnny Depp Pirates movie.

Talking to Access Hollywood, Brand says, “I’ve got eight other things to do [including] ‘Get Him To The Greek’ with Judd Apatow… So I don’t know if there’ll be time to be a pirate, I’ve got enough of that in me private life.” Honestly that sounds like a good move to me. Sure another Pirates movie will make a lot of money… but it’s Judd Apatow. The guy makes movie stars out of thin air. Land a spot in one of his movies and there’s a damned good chance that you could end up as the next Seth Rogen. Let’s face it, Russell Brand is never going to be the next Orlando Bloom.

He’s not however discounting the possibility that he could end up in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. He does confirm that it is at least a possibility and let’s face it, he’d make a pretty damn good pirate.

[From Cinema Blend]

Yes, Russell Brand will never be the next Orlando Bloom, and let me just say, thank God for that. One talent-less Orlando dirt-lip is enough. Russell would be interesting in a Pirates film, and I can totally see how he and Johnny Depp could be brothers. But what’s next? Amy Winehouse as the long-lost Sparrow sister? Now that would be brilliant casting.

Oh, I hope that doesn’t happen. I don’t like Brand at all…he’s not the least bit funny and certainly doesn’t deserve to work with someone of Depp’s caliber. If they want to give Sparrow a brother, surely they can find a talented actor for the role!

I heard this a long time ago. I don’t like Brand personally, but he does bring a lot to the movies he’s in. He was the only good thing about that last Adam Sandler movie.

Yes. I want this to happen – probably one of the few roles where his off-screen personality wouldn’t be jarring and intrusive.

And while they’re at it, let them hire some good writers for the fourth film, because the third sucked beyond all belief. Repeat after me: “LESS special effects, MORE good plot and character writing.”

Last pirates films sucked donkey…oh, by god they were downright awful. Couldn’t even sit thru’em

Brand’s 15 minutes are just about up. No talent slob … parading as an intellectual wannabe. Not funny!

Words can describe how much I dislike Russell Brand.

“Comedian” would not spring to mind.

I do NOT understand why people like Russel Brand so much. His humor is tasteless, and I can’t stand his appearance. He looks ratty and drunk all of the time.

As far as the movie, I think it’s going to be focused on mostly Jack. Orlando and Kiera will not be making an appearance. If I had to take a wild guess, the movie will be about Jack finding the Fountain of Youth, which is where the third movie left off.

I think this is great casting. I don’t love Brand, but I think his persona works here. Let’s hope the script for #4 is better. The last Pirates movie truly sucked.

I love him, i loved his Booky Wook and can’t wait for the next one.

I’m so happy those sanctimonious windbags who read The Daily Mail and all it’s sheeple, didn’t get their way and ruin his career following “Sachsgate”

He deserves all the success in the world.

I was not going to see another Pirates Of The Caribbean movie after wasting my money on the last one, but if Russell Brand is going to be in it, I could be persuaded.

I think Russell Brand was pretty funny in the “New York” special that was on the other night…

I haven’t been exposed to him much till now, so I don’t know about any past transgressions that seem to have turned people against him, but I liked him in that one performance.

Does anyone else think he looks like Helena Bonham Carter?

I mean…I can’t see a photo of this man without having to shake the image out of my head.

Never seen a POTC movie but the resemblance of Brand to Depp (at least in Sparrow costume) is highly amusing. They’d hardly have to spend much on hair and makeup would they?

He may have eight other projects on the go but how many (Apatow excepted) are of the caliber of a POTC, at least in terms of star power and exposure.

Jury’s out on his actual humour…..
