Ann Curry will finally leave NBC for a new job, but NBC keeps trashing her

Ann Curry

Ann Curry will finally leave NBC two years after her messy breakup with “Today.” We all remember how Matt Lauer engineered her departure (as a condition of his contract renewal). Ann cried on her final day as anchor, and she couldn’t even look at Matt as he faked sympathy. The whole mess resulted in Matt Lauer’s damaged brand and waning popularity. Matt went on a press tour to say Ann’s departure wasn’t his fault.

NBC shuffled Ann into the “anchor at large” position. They gave her throwaway jobs like covering the Olympics. Ann did cover some humanitarian stories, but NBC didn’t give her much airtime. She still managed to score 5 Emmy nominations last year. Ann is now leaving NBC altogether. Page Six says she was deeply “unhappy” and wanted out of her $12 million per year contract. An NBC insider added that the network was equally bummed that they paid Ann “a lot of money to do nothing.” Ouch.

Ann issued a press release about her new job. She’s developing her own media start-up, which will be distributed over several news platforms. She’ll be seeded by NBCUniversal (probably part of her departure negotiations). Ann stayed classy: “I am sincerely grateful to NBC News for allowing me to offer viewers a vast and diverse body of work. It has been a privilege to work with so many good and talented people at the network. At the same time, I can’t wait to expand my reach and work with people I admire in other places.” She wants to move on, and that should have ended the discussion.

NBC can’t let this mess go. One of their veteran executives dialed up the Daily Beast and threw some bottles in Ann’s direction:

“Ann is very likable — she’s a good person,” a veteran NBC News executive told the Daily Beast, “but a lot of people at NBC didn’t like that she and her representatives waged a campaign solely targeted at Matt Lauer and that it just never stopped. Whether she personally orchestrated it, I don’t know, but there’s no question she was involved. And as far as anybody knows, it continues to this day. It was unfair when she started it, and it’s unfair today.”

“Nobody put a gun to her head to sign the contract,” the veteran executive said. “There were extensive conversations about what the company would say and would Ann would say, and then it all kind of fell apart, and she never did anything to set the record straight.”

The executive added: “Everybody understood the emotion, of course. Ann cared deeply about the kind of work she was doing … She is a good person and she wears her heart on her sleeve, and her emotions were on full display that terrible morning on the Today show … But she never tried to move off of that, and she played the blame game, and never considered her own actions.”

That Curry apparently continued to hold a grudge against Lauer — an impression that was painfully conspicuous during an awkward and chilly joint appearance during NBC’s Olympics coverage a few weeks after her goodbye — was especially galling to the suits, because she was taking so much of the company’s money. “Many people thought it was hypocritical,” said the executive.

Not surprisingly, a source close to Curry vigorously disputed those assertions, and added: “We’re not going to into a ‘he said, she said’ thing. All I can tell you is people can say anything they want to minimize what Ann’s done … but the facts speak for themselves. Ann’s coming off a year where she’s been nominated for five Emmys. She produced a report on climate change that was extremely well-received … she had an interview with the president of Iran. So Ann’s had an incredible year and she’s taking that momentum into this new venture that’s going to allow her to appear on all sorts of platforms in addition to NBC — other networks and other news outlets. This is going to be a great move for Ann.”

[From The Daily Beast]

I understand where some of this angst comes from. Ann was fantastic during her years at the “Today” news desk, but she wasn’t a good fit for the anchor position. She got too emotional with every story, and she did embarrassing things on-air like fangirl on Brad Pitt. The problem (for NBC) was that people liked Ann, and the network handled her ousting terribly. The NBC executive tried to tell the Beast that Lauer wasn’t the one who kicked Ann out, but that’s a silly statement. Matt’s feelings about Ann were all over his face for months. He may not have pulled the trigger, but he was a deciding factor in her departure. Now NBC is whining about Ann, who was guilty of being “a good person” and used that vibe to her advantage. I don’t understand … was she supposed to hug Matt Lauer and refuse a correspondent paycheck? NBC needs to put a lid on their people, now.

Good luck to Ann on her new gig! She sounds really happy about the move.

*puts Matt Lauer back on mortal enemy list*

    Thanks for the pencil, GNaT.

  2. Someonestolemyname says:

I think she is so beautiful.
Good luck to her. I love the sound of her Voice. It was so soothing in the morning.

    I detest Matt Lauer.

  3. Sea Dragon says:

Good for her! I hope she shines brighter than ever before.

SMDH Let My Ass Be Deeply Unhappy with 12 million dollars to do nothing… UGH and Honestly She was HORRIBLE HORRIBLE in the today show HORRIBLE like my sister used to tease me every morning for the hate watch (someone was trolling her with those clothes too!!) and she’d just leave Ann Curry messages on my vm repeating Good Morning over and over in a drug sedated voice or only Saying MMMMMM Ann Styles, she was TERRIBLE ( but so was also NBC putting her in those traumatized Family that their relative just died Interviews) she couldn’t read the prompters for s!t and wouln’t wear her glasses she also wasn’t meshing with the cast somehow and it showed like BADLY straight up bad banter and terrible jokes

Sure NBC handled it bad, sure Matt is Scum but for reals She was THEE Worst, none of those things are mutually exclusive

    • Kiddo says:

She was horrible, one of the worst. Matt Lauer is still a douche for a multitude of reasons, and the world moves on with no great impact from either.

      • trilby227 says:

I thought she was horrible, too. I couldn’t stand to watch her interview people. She made herself part of the story. “Oh, look at me ! Look how sympathetic I am”! It’s like being interviewed by a Big Eyes painting.

      • QQ says:

“being interviewed by a Big Eyes painting” O.M.G YES

      • Kitten says:

        lol @ Big Eyes Painting.

I’m so happy you’re here, QQ, so I don’t have to be the only one to say how much I f*cking hate Ann Curry. The bad jokes and the awkward banter, the incessant stuttering..it was like a train-wreck that you just couldn’t turn away from.

It’s great that she’s a nice lady–really swell and all–but she SUCKED at her job. She was awful, and I could never understand why she got an on-screen gig as an interviewer and host to begin with–she has no natural talent in that arena.

Also, her personality was just grating as hell and to me, completely unprofessional with the OTT sympathy.

I’m glad that she’s moving on though. Good for her.

      • QQ says:

LET’S FORM A CLUB OMG Kitten It was neverendingly Mortifying Like …I’d watch and be like “GIRL WTF IS WITH YOU??” “GET ON WITH IT ALREADY” “WTF ARE YOU CRYING??” ” NO ANN THEY DIDN’T LAUGH CAUSE IT WASN”T FUNNY, MOVE ON, DON’T REPEAT THE PUNCHLINE FFS”

      • @Kitten
I’ve only ever watched her interview Brad or Angelina–but she creeped me out BIG TIME whenever I saw it. Like she seemed to think they walked on water–made stuff bigger/more important than it was. Like I saw the one interview that Angelina did when she was like 6 months pregnant with Shiloh–she did an interview in Ethiopia (or Namibia, not sure), and it was basically a big expose for the work that was being done there (with tidbits about her pregnancy and UN work)….Ann made some over the top comment about being pregnant. Something super new-agey and oh so spiritual about it–basically when I saw it, I thought that she was trying to prove her Super Brangeloonie Status to Angelina by saying it, and Angelina (I think, at least) surprised her by saying NOPE. I just feel a little uncomfortable.

Her voice is very soothing though, lol.

      • Bridget says:

She was terrible, but her hiring and firing is indicative of what’s wrong with the Today Show in the first place. Bad personnel choices, compounded by ham-handed behind the scenes goings-on. Until someone cleans house that show is going to continue languishing.

      • Kitten says:

” NO ANN THEY DIDN’T LAUGH CAUSE IT WASN”T FUNNY, MOVE ON, DON’T REPEAT THE PUNCHLINE FFS”

Oh my god…my sides hurt from laughing so hard. Exactly, QQ, exactly..

        @VC-that interview was classic Curry.

@Bridget-The Today show is dead, I agree. It’s been trash for a while but it’s somehow gotten steadily worse, which is amazing because they were already at ground zero.

    • Judyk says:

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for being brave enough to stand up for the ousting of Ann Curry…she deserved to be let go for all the reasons each and every single one of you stated. Matt Lauer did not have a single thing to do with it, although he probably didn’t like her, either.

  5. Audrey says:

Matt’s the victim! We should feel bad for him and start watching him on tv. Poor guy. Lol nice try, nobody buys it

  6. MG says:

In my fantasy mind, I’ve thought that if I were involved in some huge newsworthy story (like having an affair with the president or something) and every news outlet was clamoring to interview me…I would demand Ann Curry. I’ve always liked her.

  7. Bridget says:

That Daily Beast bit shows exactly why The Today Show is in freefall. Only NBC would fire someone and then expect them to apologize for the inconvenience it caused.

And clearly, the only reason why people would not like Lauer is because because of an engineered PR move.

  8. Amber says:

What kind of men justify bullying this woman? The poor woman SOBBED on air in front of millions couldn’t even look up. WTF. How cornered and verbally abused she must have felt. Disgusting. People need to leave her alone.

    • Coco says:

This. ThisThisThisThisTHIS!!!! Love Ann Curry and it’s pretty obvious she was treated horribly. It seems like no one wanted to help guide her in to being better and instead just plotted her demise and threw her under the bus. It’s amazing how far some good advice/guidance/pointers can go in helping one new at their position flourish. Haven’t watched The Today Show since and I grew up on Jane Pauly amd Bryant Gumble!

  9. Veronica says:

Yeah, how dare a woman be angry that a group of high powered men publicly embarassed all of them by catowing to Lauer’s desires in the messiest way possible. 9_9

Seriously, what did they think was going to happen? You maneuver her out of a position on the basis of ratings, and then the ratings continue to go down…well, you all look like jackasses. As for giving her “money for nothing” – again, whose fault is that? I don’t blame her for negotiating hard. She’d be a fool otherwise. The entire handling of this situation was so amateurish and pathetic. Regardless of how you felt about her, it’s hard to feel sorry for anyone involved.

    • Evie says:

+1000% BTW, love her or hate her, Ann Curry did NOT just score 5 Emmy nods this past year by doing “something for nothing” and taking “poor” NBC’s money! TV news and broadcasting is a cutthroat business & women usually get the short end of the stick. Sexism and gender bias are alive and well in TV news & broadcasting.

That said, the ones to really feel sorry for are the 99% of the reporters, producers, writers, videographers & production assistants et al – who work long hours, have irregular work schedules and don’t make six figure salaries. In general, every time a famous anchor signs a multi-year/multi-million contract, the networks end up cutting/axing the jobs of multiple rank and file workers.

  10. Jayna says:

I never liked her as the morning anchor when she took over, but when they shifted her out, they should have treated her with a lot more respect at NBC and showed they still valued her, not making it like a demotion, disappearing for the most part.

She was only brought out at the Olympics because of the uproar about it, and they rushed her there. That’s why she was so stiff. NBC never planned to use her. They just sent her out there as a prop because of all the negativity surrounding how they were treating her. Sure, she slipped things out to the press. Why shouldn’t she? They were destroying her career.

    • Lucy2 says:

Agreed- she wasn’t great as an anchor, but then they should have worked to her strengths and changed her role on the show.

  11. scout says:

Ann Curry is the sweetest person and yes she got emotional when she was doing few stories and yes, gushed over Brad Pitt, just shows that she is a genuine person, not like some fakers I see on NBC. I am sure this works out better for her to do some really good work she loves.
Matt Lauer is just vile, full of himself.

  12. PunkyMomma says:

Some serious issues with NBC. Lauer is so skeevy – why is he still there? Why is Dr. Nancy Snyderman still there (?) – she violates her Hippocratic Oath, tries a generic apology in a CYA move and yet she’s still on the air. NBC cans Ann Curry, (who, I acknowledge, can be an outstanding journalist when not emoting) and tries to resuscitate The Today Show, blaming Ann for poor viewership. Hello? NBC? Hello?

  13. Jennifer says:

I never cared for Matt Lauer, and it worsened after his mistreatment of Ann and the entire situation. I find it interesting that this ‘NBC suit’ think Ann handled everything so poorly and even pointed out her iciness to Matt during the Olympics. Yet, Matt’s body language toward Ann had been very negative for a long time. These days I will nearly break a leg to jump over the bed in order to change the station when my local news station changes to the Today Show.

    • pix says:

NBC’s Today show is a sinking ship. Save Willie Guist, Savannah, and Tamra. Let the others drown – they are a mean spirited crew and their venom just seethes from their pasted smiles. (i’m looking at you, Matt and Natalie.)

  14. The Original Mia says:

And…Today show execs continue to prove they are the living embodiment of pond scum. I wish her nothing but the best away from those pit vipers.

  15. Kori says:

I’m just reading the book Top of the Morning which details all this.

  16. MyCatLoves TV says:

NBC’s management have the PR skills of Idi Amin. STFU and give it a rest. Damn.

  17. Ginger says:

My own pre-teen child told me he hated what they were doing to Ann Curry. I was dumbfounded that he even knew who she was but he pays attention to the news. That says volumes about what the immature a-holes at this station did to her. Even kids know they suck. As for the whiny daily beast interview, all I can say is that Karma’s only a bitch if you are. They got what they deserved then try to blame it on Ann? Please.

  18. Thaisajs says:

Ann is a class act. I hope she took NBC for every dollar she could. I’m sure her new venture will be a great success.

  19. Judyk says:

Gimme a break…you have absolutely no proof Matt Lauer was behind this. Ann Curry is a beautiful woman, but she was lousy on TODAY. While there is no proof Matt was behind this, there is proof that Ann Curry has publicly dissed him.

  20. OTHER RENEE says:

I will never look at Matt Lauer’s stupid smug mug again on TV. I barf a little in my mouth just seeing his picture on line.

  21. Anonymous says:

I like her. She seems genuine.

  22. Reece says:

NBC is the worst network! She was not good as an anchor but that does not clean their hands.

  23. nicegirl says:

    Congratulations Ann! Movin’ on Up!

  24. irishserra says:

I find it amusing that Ann Curry is being blamed for how the general public reacted by Matt Lauer’s skeevy behavior. They obviously believe we are all too blind or stupid to see him for what he is.

I think Ann Curry needs a lot of polish to become a fantastic anchor, but on the whole, I really like her. I didn’t watch her interviews often, so I didn’t see the OTT antics, which I’m thankful for, but I do admire her warmth and her ability to stay graceful during this whole debacle.

  25. Bread and Circuses says:

I hope she thrives! Best of luck to her.

  26. Jog it says:

She’s someone everyone would be happy to hang out with in real life but she’s too sentimental to be anything but a news reader (as it is right now), and I’m sorry – this isn’t about her being a woman on TV – but she dressed inappropriately. Kooky dress sense. If a guy did crazy pinstripes on daytime TV, I’d be saying the same thing. I like Katie Couric’s manner on TV. But I’m open to Ann changing her style. But hey, maybe it’ll work well for her on her start-up.
