2015 Oscar nominations: who got recognized & who got snubbed?

wenn21808742

Here we go. The culmination of months of hand-shaking, shilling, interviewing, baby-kissing and pretending to care about the fans. Millions of dollars were spent. Was it all a waste? Perhaps. This morning, the Academy Award nominations were announced. And some of my dreams came true. Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Emma Stone and Julianne Moore all got nominated. Jennifer Aniston did NOT. Amy Adams did NOT. Angelina Jolie did NOT. Ava DuVernay did NOT. You can see the complete list here. Here are all the big categories:

Supporting Actor:
Robert Duvall, The Judge
Ethan Hawke, Boyhood
Edward Norton, Birdman
Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher
JK Simmons, Whiplash

Supporting Actress:
Patricia Arquette, Boyhood
Laura Dern, Wild
Keira Knightley, The Imitation Game
Emma Stone, Birdman
Meryl Streep, Into the Woods

Best Actress:
Marion Cotillard, Two Days, One Night
Felicity Jones, TTOE
Julianne Moore, Still Alice
Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl
Reese Witherspoon, Wild

Best Actor:
Steve Carell, Foxcatcher
Bradley Cooper, American Sniper
Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game
Michael Keaton, Birdman
Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything

Best Director:
Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Birdman
Richard Linklater, Boyhood
Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher
Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel
Morten Tyldum, TIG

Best Picture:
American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash

So, big surprises? No Aniston and no Amy Adams and the inclusion of Marion Cotillard. That’s shocking, because NO MONEY went into Marion’s campaign and she only picked up a few critics’ awards. I know this makes me a horrible person, but I’m giddy with relief that Aniston didn’t get nominated. That makes me so, so happy. I’m also shocked to see Laura Dern included on the Supporting list! She hustled very hard for that but she was shut out of nearly every major award nomination before this.

What else… I’m surprised that Foxcatcher got some major noms, just because I thought the Oscar hype had gone way down in the past month. I’m happy that Selma was included on the Best Picture list, but I’m disappointed that the Academy missed their opportunity to nominate the first African-American woman director with Ava DuVernay. The Best Director list is all-dude. Sigh…

Unbroken got some technical nominations, but that won’t be enough to get Angelina Jolie at the Oscars though. Maybe she’ll sign on as a presenter?

    Really surprised that Ava Duvernay, David Oyelowo and Jessica Chastain got snubbed.
    So happy that Laura Dern and Marion Cotillard snuck in there at the last minute though, I thought they both gave really solid performances that were ignored up until today.

    • Artemis says:

      A black woman won an Oscar last year, the Academy is gonna sit back and not give a crap about POC for at least 5 years.

      • Dani2 says:

        *inserts kermit-the-frog-drinking-tea meme again* I cant disagree.

      • Dragonlady Sakura says:

        I’m chuckling to myself over your comment, because sadly it’s so true.

      • M.A.F. says:

        Pretty much. And 12 Years A Slave won Best Picture so they hit their quota for the rest of the decade.

      • AG-UK says:

        WTF ughghghghghghghg they could have taken BC off in my opinion and added David O or Timothy Spall. I am glad it will be on in the middle of the night here so can wake up to see the horror of it all. Reese sorry all the tea in China will make me sit for 2 hours and look at her. I am sure Laura Dern is good but she irks me. Guess I can see it on the plane in the spring.

      • jammypants says:

        The truth.

      • T.C. says:

        Not surprised at the lack of nom for Ava D. Being both a woman and a person of color is like a double challenge to the old white men of the Academy. Bradley Cooper instead of David O from Selma is pure tragedy. And WTF for every nomination that American Sniper got. That film was pure basic. When will they stop kissing Clint’s butt for every film whether good or bad? They simply threw Selma a bone with one nomination. Guess the film directed and starred by itself.

        I like the Best Actress list. Sets it up nicely for Julianna Moore to take home the prize?

      • Alarmjaguar says:

        Yep, reading those lists, I thought, that’s a pretty white group of people (not saying they aren’t good actors, but indicative of a real lack of diversity in Hollywood). And thanks for pointing out the issue of female directors, Kaiser. Here’s a depressing article about the fact that the number of female directors has actually fallen in recent years: http://variety.com/2015/film/news/number-of-female-directors-falls-over-17-year-period-study-finds-1201402686/

      • velourazure says:

        They also hit their quota for a female director winning best director with Kathryn Bigelow, so need for that to happen EVER again. Best Director can remain its usual sausage fest.

      • Amberica says:

        Possibly, but actually, this is the first time since 1999 that there hasn’t been a single POC acting nominee. It’s egregious that Oyelowo was left out, but I wouldn’t blame it on that. Probably it’s late release has more to do with this.

    • Senaber says:

      Yeah there are no “good” surprises or real underdogs to root for. Seems really, really boring. I won’t be watching this year, but I will totally catch up later here on CB! 🙂

      • Rachel says:

        I’m watching just because NPH is hosting. I want to see that. I think the acting awards are a given, and I’m not really interested in who wins the others. I am happy that my local theater is showing most of the best picture nominees (small town). It’s been a good year for movies, and I’m excited to see them.

      • bettyrose says:

        MTE, but I didn’t expect to watch the GG’s either and then found I couldn’t turn it off after watching the red carpet.

      • Janet says:

        I always watch the entrance to see who’s wearing what, and then I turn it off.

      • Tiffany :) says:

        I was pleasantly surprised Rosamund got nominated, so yay for that! 😛

      • Danskins says:

        Post-Oscar discussions/b*tch fests on CB are way way more interesting than the actual Oscars snooze fest! 😀

    • someonestolemyname says:

      Called it days ago….I Knew Jenn Anns was NOT going to get a Nomination.
      The PR Hype for her was Empty, not based on anything real and coming from her own camp mostly.

      Jennifer Anniston is NOT on Academy Award Acting Level….she could push and push all day, it was NEVER going to happen for her.

      • Jax says:

        You are so right, Aniston is NOT Academy level and never will be, and it looks like they were not about to let her brag, “Academy Award Nominee,” for the rest of her life. I wonder how many things were broken at her house last night? Because I doubt she just shrugged it off. I can hear her now: But I gained weight, just like Charlize Theron for Monster, I allowed them to make me look UGLY! This was supposed to be a lock! How could they do this to meeeeeeeeeee?

      • Domino says:

        Jennifer Lawrence has an Oscar. ANYONE is Academy Award level now.

      • jojo says:

        Halle Berry broke the mold on undeservings winning an oscar,. That was, without a doubt, the lamest award ever given out. and I’m sorry to say, it was probably so they could get their ‘minority’ quota…

        Nowadays, its about who campaigns the best, has the best popularity, can make the academy look diverse, etc. Performance is a minor consideration nowadays.

      • Janet says:

        If Justin stayed overnight last night, I hope he put on a football helmet this morning because I have a feeling a lot of flying objects went bouncing off the walls.

    • kenned says:

      CB has it wrong about Cotillard — she picked up the lion share of critics awards. Julianne actually did just average with the precursors. Julianne and Rosamund Pike were about neck and neck with all the critics groups. Marion picked up the most awards and she had the most critical acclaim. In fact, Cotillard and Pike were both in two of the best reviewed films with stand out performances. Moore was good in Still Alice but the film is really bad and this is more of a career prize than a performance prize.

      • Dani2 says:

        I was saying to a friend of mine how Marion’s being a nominee kind of makes Julianne’s win less of a sure thing, Marion pretty much did a clean sweep of the critic awards and she won big at the Sydney film festival too if I remember correctly. I think she’s just made the best actress race a lot more interesting. They’re both amazing though, so I’m hoping it’s either one of them that wins or Rosamund.

      • reba says:

        I LOVE Marion Cotillard. Her role as Edith Piaf was one of the most unforgettable things I’ve ever seen. She reminds me of Meryl Streep in terms of sheer chameleonesque acting ability. And no make-up, too. (Ahem, well, some things don’t need to be said)

    • CynicalCeleste says:

      This won’t be popular but I have to say it. I am not a fan of Amy Adams’ performances. To me, she always looks as if she is desperately trying to remember her lines before she speaks. I also don’t get the fervour for Jessica Chastain. She has a wooden, awkward delivery, every time. They both seem like lovely people however so I can understand the fandom on that basis.

      Aniston and Witherspoon are two peas in a pod. Why don’t they hang out more?

      As for Unbroken, did anyone here read the New Yorker? “An interminable, redundant, unnecessary epic devoted to suffering, suffering, suffering… You feel like yelling “Cut!” to the director, Angelina Jolie, who confuses long scenes of sadism with truth-telling.” That might explain the pass.

      Who do I love? Julianne Moore. The woman is ridiculously talented and most deserving of an Oscar. Go Jules!

    • Mary-Alice says:

      Marion absolutely deserves to be there! She won’t win, sadly, but her performance was insanely good.

  2. Jegede says:

    Damn! Bradley Cooper has some powerful friends.

    • Josephine says:

      I think he looks so good in the trailer. Maybe the trailer is deceptive, but it doesn’t seem that far out there that he got a nom, and Clint Eastwood is a good director (craziness aside…).

      • Mom2two says:

        He sure does. I actually rolled my eyes when I saw him nominated. No matter what, that Oscar is Keaton’s.

      • littlestar says:

        I know, I hate how attractive I find him in American Sniper.

      • V4Real says:

        Don’t be surprised if they give it to Bradley over Keaton. My thoughts are since he was nominated in 2013 and it went to of course DDL, they may just feel it’s his turn.

        I don’t think they even vote on Oscars anymore. They just gather in a big room with glasses of Scotch and say let’s give it to this one and that one. POC had their moment last year so they should still be satisfied so let’s just remove all those names.
        I can’t believe that Jake, David and Ava wasn’t nominated.

      • Amberica says:

        It’s a pretty even race between Eddie Redmayne and Keaton.

    • Em' says:

      Right ?
      Jake Gyllenhaal was sooooo good in Nightcrawler

      • Phie says:

        I’m actually majorly disappointed that Jake didn’t get a nomination. Even if he had no chance of winning, he should have been recognized for Nightcrawler because he was fantastic.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        Jake was fantastic. Sad that he’s not here.

      • MtnRunner says:

        Agree. Jake was amazing in Nightcrawler.

      • LB says:

        Wtf no Gyllenhaal?!!

      • Diana B says:

        Boohooo!!!! where is Jake, I demand Jake, damn it!

      • Kimmy says:

        Right?! I thought for sure that jake was in after scoring all the previous noms! This is 3 in a row for Bcoop…..crazy shake up!

      • I Choose Me says:

        Right? Disappointed that Jake and David O didn’t get nominated.

      • Julia says:

        I haven’t seen Selma, but Jake was great in Nightcrawler. I am gutted Cooper took that fifth place, his first two nominated roles were seriously underwhelming and to my mind he needs to put in a good few years of solid performances to make up for that. I think I am beginning to really dislike him.

      • Isabelle says:

        He was great in Nightcrawler & even Prisoners . He has gave really good recent performances but is is getting little recognition.

      • Rachel R says:

        So disappointed, his performance just blew me away! Favorite movie of the year, personally. He did a fantastic job.

    • Abbott says:

      Cooper quite literally only has to sniff to get a nomination.

    • Dani2 says:

      His third year in a row as well, I haven’t seen ‘American Sniper’ yet but i would rather have seen Jake Gyllenhaal in his spot. Jake was so good in Nightcrawler.

      • LAK says:

        He is the male Kate Winslet…..it took 5 tries before she got her Oscar. Seemingly consecutive years for the years she went away empty handed.

        He’ll probably be like Kate and hope not to be Randy Newman (18 consecutive years before he got it) or Al Pacino and Martin Scorcese (20yrs plus of intermittent noms before they were finally rewarded)

    • bns says:

      Seriously. I’m sick of him.

    • Gia says:

      I heard American Sniper is insanely good. Surprisingly, I’m not sick of BC. He always surprises me with how good he is.

      And Aniston…thank God she didn’t get nominated. I said it months ago, but her being nominated would seriously make me question the integrity of the oscars….more than I already do. Some of her movies are cute (Along Came Polly) but she’s not a great actress. She does NOT deserve to be in a category along with Meryl and Marion and Juliann…please.

      • Janet says:

        OMFG had she got a nom she had her fans would have been absolutely insufferable.

      • tifzlan says:

        I don’t intend on watching American Sniper but i have to agree on Cooper. He’s never on my radar but everytime i watch a movie of his, i’m surprised at how much i end up liking him.

      • frivolity says:

        American Sniper was full of jingoistic propaganda and a terribly written film. It did not know what it wanted to be and never was much of anything but PR for American’s endless wars.

      • bette says:

        I agree! Will definitely see this, best trailer I saw all year.

        Chris Kyle’s widow was interviewed and said how uncanny it was that BC developed some of the same mannerisms during the shoot that her late husband had.

        I will also go see Birdman (love Michael Keaton) and I heard that Imitation Game was wonderful, even Kiera Knightley who I usually find too modern in her mannerisms

      • tifzlan says:

        @frivolity I had a sense it was going to be just that. Add to the fact that Chris Kyle himself was a morally questionable person and you have me staying far, faaaar away from such a movie. It was also why i did not go see Zero Dark Thirty.

      • TheOnlyDee says:

        There was no way in Hades that Jennifer would have been nominated. Has anyone even seen Cake? My coworker said he thought it was fishy that the general public had no way of seeing the movie, and that he didn’t even know if it was a comedy or a drama. I think Bradley Cooper has some acting chops. He did study in the Actor’s Studio (he was in the audience for a lot of Inside the Actor’s Studio shows). I went to a screening of American Sniper, and I didn’t enjoy it. I felt it was a bit slow and not very cohesive. I’m not a big fan of Clint Eastwood as a director, though, so maybe I’m just biased against his films. I’m so happy we can now say Oscar nominee Steve Carrell! Yay for Michael Scott!

      • Ava says:

        Saw American Sinper , it is amazing and those dissing his nomination didn’t see the movie , watching you forget that it’s Cooper , night and day from his last nomination in American Hustle , don’t even seem like the same actor played both characters . He is that good , disappears into his role.

      • someonestolemyname says:

        Bradley Cooper is splendid in American Sniper according to critics, real critics, not schmoozed critics of Cake. lol

        I knew Jennifer Anniston had NO CHANCE, Called it days ago. No nomination for Jennifer….she’s not on Academy Award level yet…..if she’ll ever be.

        I think Michael Keaton or Eddie Redmayne will get Best Actor. I’m leaning towards Michael Keaton.

        Congrats to Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawk and old timer Duvall for Supporting actor.

      • T.C. says:

        No American Sniper was the Lifetime WEAK version of The HurtLocker. It was hyped up due to the fantastic trailer but seen as piss poor when the critics and us the general public finally saw it. Completely in deserved nominations. Ava D’s direction of Selma was well above Clint’s dull work in AS. Bradley Cooper although great in Broadway’s The Elephant man (my sister saw it) was not on the same level in AS as either David O in Selma or Ralph Finnes in Budapest- he made that movie so watchable and a completely different side of him than his dark roles.

      • Veronica says:

        Most of my coworkers who have seen it said Cooper is excellent in it but that the film itself is pretty basic. So I guess his nomination makes sense but not so much everything else.

      • Julia says:

        I think American Sniper has by far the lowest rotten tomato score of all the nominated films.. At 73% compared with 95% for Nightcrawler, which was snubbed, I think we can assume nominations in this case are political, not based on quality.

    • thecookingpan says:

      I seriously don’t get his appeal – I can only think it’s due to who the director is… Bradley always looks like he’s a half a beat away from going completely cray cray.

      Oh and over the moon with all the Budapest Hotel noms – is a great movie.

      • Godwina says:

        That, and you can feel his effortin’ through the screen. His “I can’t believe they hired me!” is all over his face in everything I’ve seen him in.

      • Mary-Alice says:

        With you! The Grand Budapest stole my heart, I so much wish for recognition for all the team behind it!

      • Nikki says:

        Thanks, Cookingpan; never could figure out what creeps me out about Bradley Cooper, but he does seem cray cray. Also, he just seems like a weasel. That is the worst thing to say about someone who might be very nice; I can’t BELIEVE people find him handsome!

    • DJ says:

      No, he is just a damn good actor! So happy he got a nom. American Sniper is an OUTSTANDING movie. Love that it got a nom also.

      .
      Should be a very interesting award show!

      • someonestolemyname says:

        +1 Yes, He is a really good actor. He knows what he’s doing when he takes on a role and it shows in his accolades from the industry.

    • original kay says:

      I rolled my eyes too, about Bradley. I must be missing something, cause every movie I’ve seen with him has been completely forgettable.

      so don’t ask me what movies I’ve seen, cause I forget.

    • someonestolemyname says:

      Bradley Cooper is talented and does excellent work and garners nominations.

      • Dee Kay says:

        Cooper is AMAZING in American Sniper. Just amazing. Incredible. I completely disagreed with the film’s politics (and I disagree with Cooper saying the movie “isn’t political,” as all war movies are political), but Cooper was absolutely undeniable in the part. I was shocked he didn’t get more hype/love from critics’ groups before the Oscar nom list.

        That said, Gyllenhall also deserved a nomination for Nightcrawler.

    • Godwina says:

      I know. I can’t still believe he’s a thing.

  3. neelyo says:

    Cotillard has received raves for TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT so it’s great that she made it in there even with no publicity or campaign.

    • Dani2 says:

      I’m happiest of all for her because I really felt like she would be overlooked this year even though she gave two amazing performances in 2014.

    • Andrea1 says:

      Exactly!
      I have been rooting for her and also stated on this site last week that Marion should be the one taking Aniston’s spot. So So glad for her

  4. CM says:

    I am also giddy that Aniston didn’t get one!! Buh-bye – Money can’t buy everything, love!

    • CM says:

      Also pleased for Marion Cotillard – who deserves it – and Laura Dern. Not seen Wild yet but Dern is underrated.

    • Susie Q says:

      But, but she had a fake scar and her hair was messy! She deserves an Oscar!

    • LadyMTL says:

      IDK if I’d say that I’m giddy but I definitely did let out a cackle. I suppose that makes me a horrible person too, lol.

    • Connie says:

      It makes me chuckle that Jen put in so much effort to campaign and Marion barely lifts her finger and gets a very well deserved nom.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

        Variety is saying it was obvious Jen was campaigning hard, but basically The Academy never looked her way….they thought she was better in the Good Girl.

    • sophie says:

      Giddy with relief that jolie got snubbed. Money can’t buy everything.

      • Ella says:

        It is only her second directorial effort, she is just getting started! It has made 100 million since Christmas, the audience has loved Unbroken.
        She’ll be just fine. She already has her Oscar in case you forgot!

      • Kim1 says:

        No worries Boo.Angie is prepping to direct her fourth feature.Unbroken is in the black.Her husband just signed to work with Christian Bale,Ryan Gosling and possibly Steve Carrell in a movie Brad is producing.Selma which Plan B co produced is up for Best Picture.
        All is good, Boo

      • Andrea1 says:

        @ella +1000000
        Jolie is still a young director with a bright future

        It makes me chuckle that Jen put in so much effort to campaign and Marion barely lifts her finger and gets a very well deserved nom.
        ____this_____

      • Brittney B says:

        @Ella — not just one Oscar, either! One for her acting talent, one for her big heart, and a few other nominations to boot. It’s only a matter of time before she gets nominated for directing, too… but I don’t think anyone was that shocked by the snub, especially after the Golden Globes nominations. She wasn’t on the Oscar campaign trail, really; the studio planned the timing, and she just pushed it to get people in theaters, then disappeared after the box office success was assured. She accomplished her goal (and then some).

        What DOES shock me? TIG’s director took the spot Ava deserved. (And Bradley took the spot David Oyelowo deserved.) So, so, so white-washed this year, it’s not even funny.

      • bns says:

        LMAO

        This whole thread is killing me. You guys are something else.

      • @Brittney B
        One of the things that confused me was that the media going on and on about how Angelina’s movie was snubbed….but the reviews were mixed, and it got only a few nominations at some of the minor awards ceremonies–none of the major ones (like GG’s)…so I don’t understand why they keep repeating that it was a snub. Obviously they didn’t feel like the movie was good enough to be nominated with all of the other films, so I don’t get how they can say it keeps getting snubbed. I guess that’s the power of media. Repeat it often enough, then it’ll become true.

        *Repeat after me: Jennifer Aniston was SNUBBED*

      • TC says:

        Hey VC,

        Truer words have never been spoken. Although I don’t think Aniston was snubbed. To be snubbed, you have to be a contender to begin with and Aniston just doesn’t have the acting chops to contend with the other five exceptional actresses who received Oscar nominations this morning. She’s not even in the same universe. Some awards can be bought. But thankfully, not all of them.

      • Brittney B says:

        @ Virgilia You crack me up. That does seem to be the media’s main influence… inundating us with the same thing until everyone takes it as fact.

        But I agree about Unbroken. It wasn’t a critical hit like the other movies in the Best Picture category, but because she’s Angelina and it was a Christmas release based on a harrowing true story, everyone just assumed it was supposed to be an Oscar contender. There are plenty of other epic movies based on real events (or books) that made money in 2014 but didn’t get any big awards.

        I can’t say for sure whether Angelina herself expected the nominations (or more awards acclaim), though. I can only guess that she cared a little but has much bigger priorities right now (and is voluntarily spending her millions on worthier causes than campaigns… but I digress).

      • Someonestolemyname says:

        Angelina has TWO Oscars and more years to put herself on the map as a Director. I’m not worried about her, Angelina usually gets what she sets her mind to, even if it takes a bit longer.

    • Ella says:

      Her whole campaign was just too desperate. I was so happy to see Marion’s name called. She hardly campaigned, it was her performance that got her the nomination. No cupcakes from her like Jen!!!

    • Kim1 says:

      I wonder if she had to pay her Oscar consultant or if she only pays if she gets a nomination.
      I just read her dead ex boyfriend’s widow is pissed with her for bringing him up.
      All for naught

      • evasmom says:

        I heard that her consultant would get $1 million for nom and 2 or 3 for win.

      • JosieJ says:

        I would be pissed too. Jennifer has been around a LONG time and she just now shares the story of the love of her life she lost? Even her fans have to realize how wrong and desperate that was for her, how low she sunk to pull out that story.

        She didn’t have to go there. She had a very impressive campaign. Pulling that story out made her look pathetic. I understand why his family would be upset. She used their tragedy to try to get an Oscar.

      • TheOnlyDee says:

        That’s hilarious, and also I just love that the job of Oscar consultant exists!

    • PrincessMe says:

      Bwahahahahahaha, I may be terrible for feeling this way, but when I heard NO ANISTON. I really yelled “Yes! Yes! Yes!” in my head and did a little wiggle.

      *sigh* I feel terrible.

      *one more happy dance*

    • Ganger says:

      Yup, I’m a beeyatch, because I grinned when I saw that her name wasn’t on the list!

    • Annie says:

      I am also giddy that Aniston didn’t get a nomination not because I like Angie, but really she does not deserve to get one.

      Too bad, Unbroken was nominated for BP, but then it was already expected. At least, the movie was a box office hit, so I suppose it wasn’t bad after all.

      I guess, Universal didn’t really campaign much for Unroken as they also have The theory of Everything, which was more a shoo-in.

    • Ctkat1 says:

      Me too!! It’s not that I object to Jennifer Aniston getting an Oscar nom ever, but I really, really objected to the idea that she might get one just based on her money & campaign- “Cake” couldn’t find a buyer, so Aniston paid to get it into theaters long enough to qualify, hired an Oscar strategist and then got everyone she knows to say Aniston = Oscar. I’m just so glad it didn’t work, AND that “her” spot was taken by someone who did no campaigning whatsoever and is just based on a truly great performance!!!

      • TheOnlyDee says:

        I agree. Everyone hustles, but people actually see those movies. Who has actually seen Cake? I can’t judge it, if I haven’t seen it.

      • epiphany says:

        Actually you can judge it based on one simple fact; not one of her co-stars has lifted finger to promote the film, many of them highly respected actors. That tells me either the movie is awful, or Aniston was such a pain to work with they refuse to help her.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

        Jenn Anniston never had a spot, is it wasn’t Marion C, it would have been someone else there. Amy Adams, if not Amy, then someone else.

        Jennifer Anniston’s work was simply not Oscar worthy.

    • Rosalee says:

      I noticed Jolie wasn’t nominated either. :p

    • StormsMama says:

      CM- yes it’s a relief

      But also a point I find so important that I haven’t heard much of is this:

      Anniston was given a chance to prove herself in front of all the members when she opened the golden globes (after awesome and exceptional TF and AP).
      She was tested by her own words- they gave her a chance to BE THE GO TO GIRL with wonder-otter Benedict. He’s been everywhere and he is held in high esteem for his abilities. And yet she couldn’t see it as a gift but rather as an affront.
      I had the pleasure of watching it twice (restarting it for Hubbie and I to watch together) and it was SO obvious she was NOT acting as she made her way to stage. Her jaw was clenched and she felt “cheapened”- ? I don’t know- she was pissed. And she couldn’t just wing it and make it fun.
      She couldn’t improvise and SHOW those voters her “go to girl” abilities. Bc she’s a one trick pony. A one trick pony named Rachel – and I love Rachel! That’s not a bad thing and she should be psyched she’s had so many film roles where she can be some variation of Rachel. But she is NO Meryl, Marion, Amy, or Angie.

      I really feel in that moment where she blamed Benedict for (her) messing up HER lines- she sealed her fate. She couldn’t hack the BIG big leagues. And she did it to herself!

      And to all the celebitches who say “no way- it was act” Tina and Amy both pointed out in the past that it was better not to ask for permission and give someone room to say no. SO WE KNOW THEY ARE CAPABLE OF THIS. And In fact it’s possible they thought she’d be gracious and funny and hilarious and awesome and seal the deal for her nomination. They maybe seen it as a gift! It WAS A GIFT!!! An example of this is when Amy sat on Bono’s lap (wasn’t it Bono?). They never asked ahead of time bc they knew he might say no.
      I think they knew she’d say no.
      And there is love for Bendy across the board right now so it could have worked in JAs favor if she were genuine — but she totally showed her true Me Me Meeeeeeeeeee colors.
      In that opening she was uptight, flustered, insulted, and —gasp! off brand!

  5. Gracie says:

    Here goes. Looks like hustling does pay off. And nothing for Mr Turner again?! What a sham! Interestingly nothing for Big Eyes either. No Tim Burton love?

    • MtnRunner says:

      I was expecting Turner to get something in a major category seeing it nominated in a couple of the crafts categories. I would love to see it get an award for Cinematography. Sad that Spall got snubbed.

    • Katenotkatie says:

      Honestly, Big Eyes was not a good film. Very uneven and rather slow. I don’t think Amy Adams or Christoph Waltz gave award-worthy performances, either.

      • Ctkat1 says:

        Agree with you- they’re both excellent actors, but neither did their best work- he was way too over-the-top and she was reserved to the point of almost not being an actual person with, you know, desires and wants.

      • TheOnlyDee says:

        I liked Big Eyes because it was a return to form for Burton. He needed to stop making terrible remakes with Depp to get his groove back.

    • Cici says:

      Mr Turner got 4 nominations.

  6. jen says:

    I guess Aniston was TOO obvious with her hustle? I still believe noms can be ‘bought’

    • Ganger says:

      Nah, there were other actors who were just as obvious as Jen. I just don’t think she has the respect in Hollywood that she’d like to think she has. She’s a decent comedic actress in ensemble films, but she Does Not have the chops to play more serious roles.

      • Brittney B says:

        I loved her in Good Girl, but I was relieved that she couldn’t buy this one. Honestly, Golden Globe nominations haven’t meant much in the past decade, because it’s so obvious that they can be bought. Oscars can too, but only to a certain degree… the Academy is made up of actual artists (including former winners/nominees), who have a vested interest in maintaining the awards’ integrity.

      • Josephine says:

        It seems like even her co-stars weren’t supporting her. There was total silence from everyone else on that film. I thought that was very,very odd. Were the others even invited to the endless openings? You never saw anyone but her.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      Jen Ann’s work is simply not respected by Academy members at this time.

      I got the feeling Jen is Always Acting, even when we see her giving interviews….she is not authentic.

  7. sideeyebarbie says:

    Maybe now the Oscars will be about the talent rather than the Unholy Triangle?

  8. Josephine says:

    Really happy to see American Sniper get some noms. The list seemed pretty predictable but I also love that Budapest Hotel got a few looks!

  9. Luca76 says:

    I’m so happy Cotillard got nominated she has been so critically acclaimed in this role. The cynic in me thought either Aniston’s publicity over substance campaigning or Weinstein backing of Amy Adams would win out. I’m ecstatic to be wrong.

    • Juana says:

      Yes, Cotillard is brilliant in Two Days, like she is in everything. I’m very pleasantly surprised at her nomination, given there was no campaign for her.

    • Mia4S says:

      Oscar nominations are bought all the time but sometimes it’s about the Academy trying to look good and “artistic”. They’re a defensive bunch.

      A lot of the campaigners seem to forget about the Academy’s rather large Europeon contingent (all those British winners over the years). They don’t give a crap about Rachel from Friends, so in comes Colltihard.

      Selma? Apparently the home DVD screeners were very slow in coming. A lot of members don’t go out of their way to see the films in theatre. Again, not about merit.

      • Karen says:

        +1 I think having Jen on the list would have brought the Academy down to People’s Choice Awards level. I hate to be so childish but screamed seeing Marion’s name instead of Jennifer. Between her whining about weight gain, no makeup, dead boyfriend, ugly engagement ring and all other nonsense she really sounded foolish. Marion is elegant, beautiful,, understated and brilliant. And does not use orange spray on her skin.

        My question is-all these bloggers had Jen as one of the five. Did they truly think she was amazing or just making predictions? Sasha Stone at Awards Daily, Variety, picked her as the nominee? Are all these people payed by her publicist and Oscar consultant. What a corrupt Oscar world it is.

      • evasmom says:

        Oh my goodness, Karen, you picked up on that too!!! I have been a fan of Awards Daily for years and I mentioned in another post how it seemed as if she was on the payroll. All of sudden, she was naming her left and right. The posters gave her crap for it too. It was like what? She even devoted a post to her. Weird.

      • TC says:

        “My question is-all these bloggers had Jen as one of the five. Did they truly think she was amazing or just making predictions? Sasha Stone at Awards Daily, Variety, picked her as the nominee? Are all these people payed by her publicist and Oscar consultant.”

        Karen — I think it was part of Lisa Taback’s (Aniston’s Oscar consultant) strategy. I believe some bloggers were paid to put Aniston on their Oscar Prediction lists to keep her name front and center so that she would always be in the conversation during awards season. As Virgilia said upthread, when it’s spoken often enough, it becomes reality. But I guess they didn’t imagine the conversations wouldn’t be favorable; and it looks like it became a complete turnoff in the end.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

        A Oscar Campaign can be bought but Votes can’t be bought, there has to be Talent to back it up and a large portion of the Academy voting members have to be on the same page about a performance.

        You can’t finesse your way to a Oscar , there has to be some talent there and Academy members have to recognize that talent.

  10. insomniac says:

    Can Jen get a refund from that Oscar specialist she hired?

    Oh well. Really happy for Michael Keaton, and I will be thrilled if JK Simmons wins. Other than that, meh.

    • Josephine says:

      I’ve read a few articles that say that J.K. is a lock, I hope so, too!

      • Just watching the TRAILER for Whiplash–JK should get it. I probably won’t ever watch Whiplash, because a person like that can make me cry in 2 seconds flat. I was *this close* to crying just from the trailer, and winced/looked away a LOT of times. I can sit through gory movies, war films—stuff like that, but I can’t take it when someone’s yelling at someone like that in a freaking movie…..

      • Rachel says:

        VC, as soon as I saw the trailer, all I could think was they made a movie about my high school band director. He was a monster. Truly. As a much more self-assured adult, I wonder why I would subject myself to that. Why I didn’t quit and file a complaint with the administration or the school board. Except I know they wouldn’t have done anything. We won ALL the awards. So they weren’t going to do anything about it. They’d just let him terrorize the students entrusted to him. Ironically, the biggest bullying problem when I was in high school was him. As an outspoken adult, I still have dreams where I refuse to take it anymore and tell him what a worthless excuse for a human being he is.

        So yeah, I won’t be watching it either.

      • insomniac says:

        I know what you mean, Virgilia. I saw the trailer for “Whiplash” and thought “Oh, I want to see that,” followed quickly by “Wait — no I don’t. That will bring on some seriously bad high school flashbacks, and Simmons seems a little *too* convincing in that role.” But I still hope he wins; I’ve always liked him a lot when I see him in something.

      • Mmhmm says:

        WHIPLASH is incredible. I loveddd that movie and has become one of my favorites.

      • AG-UK says:

        I hope he wins too, been watching him since his Law and Order days.. seeing the film this weekend as it’s only just opening here.

      • TheOnlyDee says:

        Whiplash is great! JK is so awesome and scary. I smile just thinking about him saying “not quite my tempo.” It is a really well done movie.

      • MtnRunner says:

        JK is everything! I think he’s a lock for the win, despite Norton’s equally brilliant performance in Birdman.

      • TC says:

        I agree! Whiplash is a great film. JK Simmons should nail the Oscar for his performance. He IS the movie!

    • Janet says:

      Poor Jen. Two million dollars down the drain.

    • Diana B says:

      JK was terrifying in Whiplash so he better be the winner. He was so good! I was actually really scared everytime he appeared on screen. The verbal lashing he gave was outstanding.

  11. Mellie says:

    No Amy Adams??? WTF??? How do you win the Golden Globe and not get an Oscar Nomination? I hate it for JA, but I understand, but Amy Adams?! I don’t get it. The nominated ladies are all very talented though….excellent actresses from top to bottom, but I still think AA should have been included.

    • anon says:

      I agree. It looks like Reese took her place. How did they not nominate Amy I don’t know.

      • CK says:

        Cotillard took her place. Reese, Moore, Jones, and Pike have been all but locked for months now. That 5th spot has featuring a rotating list of actresses (Cotillard, Aniston, Adams, Blunt).

        And to answer, Mellie’s question, she won in the comedy/musical category in a year when all the heavy hitters were in the drama category. It’s really not that rare/hard to see her not getting a nomination, especially with the way they tend to avoid comedies not made by Wes Anderson or Alleged child molester Woody Allen.

    • Mia4S says:

      How to you win the Globe and not get nominated? Easy. The overlap in Academy and Golden Globe voters is 0.000000%. The Globes are decided by 90 journalists. That’s it. The whole system is nuts.

    • M.A.F. says:

      The Golden Globes isn’t a “real” award. The only ones that matter are an Oscar and Emmys (and maybe a SAG award since that comes from their peers).

      • bettyrose says:

        But the Globes are voted on by journalists with global perspectives, while the Oscars are decided by an incestuous group of industry insiders who are swayed by Oscar campaigns. I agree that the Globes don’t matter much in the industry, but I dare say they are far more a response to quality than the Oscars.

      • md1979 says:

        Honestly, do either of them matter? You have a handful of journalists on one hand, and bunch of old white guys on the other… and both seem to nominate and judge based on ridiculous campaigns and popularity contests.

    • leah says:

      ’cause GG are worth approximatively zero as true precursors? Ask Nicole Kidman

  12. Cheryl says:

    Love the inclusion of Marion Cotillard and love “Lost Stars” for best original song, Adam Levine will be performing!!

    • starrywonder says:

      Me too. Marion was great and I loved Begin Again. I’m upset for Jake G though.

      I’m glad JA and AJ won’t be at the Oscars. Now no more articles about any showdowns

      • Janet says:

        Angie and Brad could still show up since Unbroken got three technical noms including best cinematography and Brad was involved in Selma.

      • bettyrose says:

        Plus, aren’t previous Oscar winners welcome to show up any time they want?

      • evasmom says:

        Yes, I shall say Brad would be there. He is a producer of Selma correct?

    • Lindy79 says:

      I do too, I love all of the original music from that film

  13. Abbott says:

    I may have overdid it with the votive candles and shaman priestess and accidentally sacrificed Gyllenhaal to stop Aniston.

    Also, can we talk about ‘Dick Poop?”

    *chest bumps Kaiser*

  14. truthSF says:

    Not worried about Jolie, she has plenty of time to hone her skills as a director before she gets a directorial nomination.

    But i’m soooooo sad about Ava’s shutout, how could they not nominate her for best director. I guess the academy only like to nominate a black woman if she’s playing a whore, maid, or slave, sigh.

    • Dani2 says:

      “I guess the academy only like to nominate a black woman if she’s playing a whore, maid, or slave, sigh.” insert kermit-the-frog-drinking-tea meme.

    • Unbroken was nominated for three technical awards–Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, and Cinemotography (Roger Deakins was fantastic!)….and I’m not surprised.

      And yes–how TF do you nominate the film for Best Picture, but not the Director? What kind of shit is that?

      • OriginalTessa says:

        There’re only 5 director spots, and up to 10 for Best Picture. I agree it’s a weird system. How can something be considered for Best Picture if the director isn’t considered the best director, or even nominated as one?

      • cr says:

        Not uncommon shit, sadly. Apparently some of these films direct themselves.

      • Lady D says:

        They did the same thing to Ben Affleck and his movie Argo.

      • @Lady D
        Lol, I didn’t mind with Argo. I thought the movie was a great, big MEH. I honestly couldn’t wait for it to be over, and was shocked that it had even been nominated as Best Picture (I saw it AFTER the Oscars)…..to me it won because Hollywood wanted to kiss its own ass that year. THAT movie was Oscar baity at its BEST.

        And I like Ben a whole lot more as a director. I just don’t think he can act unless he’s playing an obnoxious Boston boy.

      • Dee Kay says:

        @VirgiliaCoriolanus OMG I cannot agree more about Argo. SO mediocre. SO dumb (not the events of the story, but the script). Every scene seemed very Oscar-baity, like the whole movie was built to attract Hollywood voters b/c it’s a story about Hollywood saving people in/from Iran. UGH. I know some people love that film but I still think *they* were brainwashed by the Oscar campaign.

    • Andrea1 says:

      Not worried about Jolie, she has plenty of time to hone her skills as a director before she gets a directorial nomination.
      I agree! Plus her movie is making money to Me that’s what’s most important

    • Paige says:

      So much tea in this post. I’m sad to say 12 Years A Slave ruined Selma chances. The Oscars have a reputation. Sad, but true. Who keeps nominating Streep every single year? It’s too predictable at this point.

      • Termoli77 says:

        Seriously, all Streep has to do is show up in a movie and they nominate her. There were a lot of great performances that could have taken that spot (Chastain, Kim Dickens, Rene Russo) but they’re obsesses with Meryl.

  15. OriginalTessa says:

    Bradley Cooper edged out Jake Gyllenhaal. Thought that might happen. The Academy seems to really love Bradley Cooper. He’s becoming a major player.

    • Josephine says:

      And I think Jake’s movie was too dark for the mainstream voter. I”m fine with Bradley Cooper because I think the movie looks very good, but I would have liked to see Jake. He has a quiet but kinda interesting career.

      • OriginalTessa says:

        Oh, I’m fine with Bradley too. I think he’s a good actor and I’m looking forward to seeing American Sniper. From previews, it looks like a great film, and his performance looks top notch. But, so was Jake’s… so decisions get made by voters about who to give it to, and you may be right, it may have just been the film itself. One day I hope Jake can push into the mainstream. B Coop is living there right now.

      • Dee Kay says:

        @Josephine I have been scratching my head (proverbially) all morning over Gyllenhall being passed over, and I think you may be right about Nightcrawler being too dark for most Oscar voters.

        Bradley Cooper was just incredible in the role in American Sniper. But the movie was hard to swallow for anyone who questions the legitimacy of the war in Iraq.

  16. als says:

    And Jake Gyllenhaal was also left out, I feel like he is pretty underestimated, while Bradley Cooper is simply adored for everything…he’s a wannabe Meryl Streep. American Sniper, maybe a good movie, but it seems like it was forcefully brought in the game.

    • anon says:

      Oh, I completely forgot about Jake! (facepalm). I had a feeling someone is missing. Bradley Cooper, shoo! It should’ve been Jake in that place.
      Why does Jake get snubbed so much? Does he not play the game?

      • Artemis says:

        Jake is the game though. He’s born into a famous well-connected family e.g. his godfather was Paul Newman and his house always had filmmakers and writers coming in and out. Ethan Hawke and Steven Soderbergh lived above their garage.

        I mean, it’s actually really strange that he doesn’t get a nom when he’s born into the business and knows everybody so well. You see him shake hands at these events often with all types of people. His mom is very loved by his peers and I can imagine that Jake wanted to, he could definitely win an Oscar at this point in his career without much effort.

        The dude has talent, he is consistent and it is obvious that he cares about the craft and respects it so I assume he isn’t bothering with campaigning. He’s happy with his career as it is.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        Jake has been nominated before and he will be nominated again. Probably next year.

    • MtnRunner says:

      I was very disappointed to see Jakey G left off the list. Happy for Carell, but think Jake deserved it more.

      • TheOnlyDee says:

        I actually agree with you. I think Jake should have replaced Steve and not Bradley. I do love Steve Carell, and I’m happy for him, but Foxcatcher was a little bit messy. I remember when that went down here in PA, and they fudged with the timeline of that story A LOT.

  17. Esmom says:

    I’m not giddy that Aniston didn’t get nominated but I’m not surprised. I think, and she may have already said this, that she’s already won in the sense that she’s been recognized by many of TBTB of being capable of branching out from her usual roles and hopefully will get more in the future.

    • Pixi says:

      Unlike Meryl Streep who now literally will get nominated for anything

      • Hautie says:

        “Unlike Meryl Streep who now literally will get nominated for anything….”
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        I have began to wonder too how exactly does she keep getting nominated. Seriously. Ever since she won for “The Iron Lady”… I realize there is nothing legit about who takes Oscar home.
        Then the film gets no other nominations in the big categories. Just Meryl getting another acting nomination. I find it all interesting.
        There is little ole’ Foxcatcher, earned the acting nominations for the male leads… but did not make it to Best Picture. When there are many slots for the picture one.
        It always seems bizarre to me how it all comes out in the end.
    • Lucy2 says:
      That’s what I’ve been saying too. Even without an Oscar nom, she may have changed the direction of her career and the type of offers she gets- which is what everyone has been complaining about with her for years, that all she did was bad rom coms.
      • Janet says:
        And she may decide to stick with rom-coms after this. She’s a creature of habit and she likes to stay in her comfort zone. At least she won’t have to ugly up and gain weight. She may decide it isn’t worth it after all.
  18. anon says:
    Good nominations this year, all well deserved. Though, I would’ve preferred Fiennes over Cooper. But he didn’t campaign. Plus, that would make 3 Englishmen out of 5 actors for American based Oscars and that simply wouldn’t do.
    The bottom line, good job.
    EDIT: well, I was just reminded about Jake G. Brdley Cooper over Jake, what were they thinking?
    • vauvert says:
      Hear, hear. He was just splendid in Grand. The whole movie was. I don’t think it can win, with the competition it has, but what a gem.
  19. kri says:
    Happy for Michael Keaton.I’m thinking he will win. As for Cooper, well, damn!! Those thighs made an impression.
    • PunkyMomma says:
      Thrilled for Keaton and Redmayne as well! And I do think Brad’s wedgie definitely caught the Academy swing voters.
  20. Dixie says:
    Ok, Bradley Cooper instead of Jake? And three nominations in a row… Seriously, wtf? What kind of friends does he have in Hollywood?!
    Extremely happy for Marion and Rosamund, though!
    And I love Keira- she seems a nice, outgoing, smart person and I (usually) love her style but she’s no actress….
  21. 'P'enny says:
    Bradley Cooper really got nominated because of his performance in Guardians of the Galaxy. Seriously, his squirrel thing was brilliant! He out acted everyone except the tree.
    • OriginalTessa says:
      He’s a good actor. I’m sure his performance in Sniper is worthy of the nom. I haven’t seen it yet, but based on the previews, there’s no reason for me to think it was bought or undeserved.
      • Lilacflowers says:
        I haven’t seen it yet either so I can’t and won’t make judgments on whether it deserves to be there. I think Carrel deserves to be there. I also think Jake does too but the weak one I’m seeing is Cumberbatch. He doesn’t deserve to be there over Jake.
      • Dee Kay says:
        @Lilacflowers Good point abt Cumberbatch being the undeserving one in the category. Yeah I would have dropped Cumberbatch for Gyllenhall, most definitely.
    • Scarlet Vixen says:
      Hahaha, it was a raccoon. 🙂 I mentioned on a different thread that he was actually my favorite part of “Guardians.” I thought he was awesome. Did you know that the tree was actually voiced by Vin Diesel??
    • Lilacflowers says:
      @’p’enny, Guardians is nominated for visual effects, which would definitely include Rocket Raccoon, so two nods for Bradley Cooper.
  22. Rhiley says:
    I haven’t seen Big Eyes but am a little bummed Amy Adams wasn’t nominated. I think she is perhaps my favorite working actress. She deserves an Oscar just for being a class act.
  23. Toot says:
    Poor Aniston. All that money wasted. LOL
  24. scout says:
    Unbroken 🙁
    No Cake 🙂
    Emma Stone 🙂
    “Selma” with producers Oprah and Brad Pitt! YAY!!!
    Hope Brad and his wife dazzle us at Oscar red carpet, looking forward to it. May be their image will help erase my memory of the dreaded extensions and white gloves foreverandeverandever!!
  25. mazzie says:
    Most you guys called the Best Actor category – nice! I feel it’s Keaton’s to lose. And if he does, maybe to Redmayne? Thoughts?
    (Sarcastic side note of Lupita winning last year so the Academy doesn’t have to nominate people of colour this year.)
    • j says:
      keaton or maybe simmons but i haven’t seen whiplash yet
      i really didnt care for ttoe or eddie in it tbh. i like him, but it just didnt work for me, and i thought jones was the best part of the whole thing
      • Diana B says:
        JK is nominated in the supporting category. I think he will win and Keaton will win the leading. Fingers cross it won’t be lizzard face because I will throw a fit he wins.
    • Gracie says:
      Wasn’t that already talked about last year? One year they gave one to a person of colour and the next few years nothing. Rather expected in a sense.
    • boredsuburbanhousewife says:
      Redmayne.
      He won the Golden Globe and I think the SAG for best actor — is that considered predictive?
      Cooper — he seems like he’s in a similar position as McConaughey last year. A guy who toiled in the acting vineyards for years and years often playing a douchey guy, no one thought of him as a major player, and then suddenly boom, he comes into his own with a great performance in an amazing vehicle and now the usual Hollywood herd mentality kicks in and he’ll be everyone’s darling for a year or two. I think the same thing happened to Amy Adams with Enchanted when she’d been barely hanging on for many years. Not that its not deserved, but one can’t say they haven’t paid their dues. Better than peaking too early?
      • Dani2 says:
        The Screen Actors Guild awards is on the 25th, I definitely feel like it’s a head to head between Keaton and Redmayne though.
    • anon says:
      I didn’t really get the Birdman. I love Edward Norton though. This is who should get an Oscar. Norton is one of the most underrated actors of our time.
      Keaton? A good actor , but after his speech at GG he kind of lost a lot of his shine for me. He seems to lack the depth.
      I love Jake G. (who didn’t get in), David O. was good ( I thought for sure he’d get in, I don’t know how did they dare to be so non-PC and not nominate someone for an MLK role?), Fiennes ( didn’t campaign) and then Eddie and Ben, both deserved nominations in my view.
      Eddie and Ben both campaigned like there is no tomorrow and it is obvious now why. It paid off but it looks like it was a close call. They are British and for them to get in ahead of also deserving Americans was very hard, I am sure.
      • PunkyMomma says:
        Ed Norton stole every scene in Birdman.
      • TheOnlyDee says:
        If it weren’t for JK Simmons in Whiplash, the Oscar would be in the bag for Norton. He is an incredible actor and I would love to see him collect a statue one day.
      • Foxi loo says:
        Edward Norton is one of my favourite actors! Primal Fear practically tops the list for one of my favourite films. The man is utterly brilliant!
    • MtnRunner says:
      I think it’s Keaton’s to lose this year at the SAGS and Oscars. Redmayne would be his biggest competition, but don’t think he’ll get the votes to beat Keaton.
      Simmons and Norton were equally good in their roles, but the old fogies love the older actors, so I expect JK to get the statue as a way of honoring his body of work as well. Besides, he’s never pissed anyone off as far as I know. Not everyone likes working with Norton. Being a likable person goes a long way with their colleagues that will be voting for the acting categories.
    • Someonestolemyname says:
      Keaton
  26. Pixi says:
    Ah to be a fly in JAniston’s breakfast mojito!
  27. Lahdidahbaby says:
    My main thing was Keaton in Birdman, so I’m happy.
  28. Jess1632 says:
    Uggh Meryl for into the woods???? Why??? What a waste of space
    • Yeah, I don’t think Meryl should’ve been nominated (just based on my aunt who went to see the movie)–between this, THe Iron Lady (my sister watched it, and I saw parts of it, and it looked boring as hell), and The Hours….
      And I was all set to go see Into The Woods until I found out it was a musical. It may be ignorant, but I can’t STAND musicals. Ugh. I’m so weird about songs–I don’t listen to a lot of music–but I have to like ALL of the songs to be able to stand the whole movie.
      • AG-UK says:
        Yes I am with you. HATE musicals and maybe this particular type as it’s very old school I can’t recall who the music is by but it’s walk slowly dramatically throw open the window and start singing no no no cannot. They only one I can watch is Carousel.. (: cause I use to with my grandma but that’s it.
      • **sighs** says:
        Into the Woods is anything but old school. It’s Stephen Sondheim, which is nothing like, say Brigadoon or Oklahoma. It’s extremely difficult and layered musically. In the stage play, the first half is very sort of light and fairy-tailish, but the second half is very dark and full of adultery and death. They toned down the second half a lot in the movie, which really disappointed me. The music was really great though. I was impressed with Emily Blunt.
      • AG-UK says:
        @ sighs
        Ok but I don’t care if my mother was in it I couldn’t sit thru it. oooh Brigadoon my grandma use to watch that too.
      • Lady D says:
        I hate musicals too. Not real impressed with having to sit through 16 songs to watch a Disney, Pixar, etc. animated movie either.
      • **sighs** says:
        AG-fair enough. I prersonally cannot stomach Andrew Lloyd Weber in any way shape or form.
    • TX says:
      I love the Streep but I’m with you here!!
    • Mia4S says:
      Meryl was good in Into the Woods, but come on!
      Ironically the best performance in that movie (but too small a role for consideration) was the guy announcing the nominations, Chris Pine.
  29. MyLittlePony says:
    Surely Timothy Spall should have been nominated for Mr Turner – his was a stellar performance. Glad to see the film in other categories though. Am extremely happy for Patricia Arquette! She’s been my girl crush since True Romance.
  30. Talie says:
    Marion’s nomination proves that Critics groups do have power when they unite.
    Jennifer already won on some level — this is the most respect she’s had from awards groups in a long ass time. Now let’s see what she does with it.
    Disappointed for Jake and Rene Russo for Nightcrawler. And Ava DuVernay.
    • Dani2 says:
      Completely forgot about Rene Russo, but I really enjoyed her performance, I would have preferred to see her in the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category rather than Meryl (18 times nominated).
    • Kim1 says:
      Horrible Bosses 3
    • Ella says:
      She will do Meet the Millers 2, and be half naked.
      There are just so many actresses that are better than her & will get first choice of scripts. Jen gets the leftovers & the director from Beastly.
    • Pixelated says:
      @talie agreed. Nightcrawler was fantastic on so many levels. Jake Has been doing some great work recently.
    • Someonestolemyname says:
      But,,,,,JennAnn really had no respect…..it was all bought PR and Huvane hype from inside her own Pr machines and favors.
      The Academy wanted nothing to do with Cake or Jenn Ann.
      She is respected by SAG but I think that’s because of Friends and she’s been around a long time.
      The Globes can be finessed, bought and she didn’t even WIN that.
  31. pleaseicu says:
    Surprised that Jake Gyllenhaal got bumped for Bradley Cooper since, until now, it’s been Jake sliding into that final spot over Cooper. The Academy loves them some Cooper, don’t they?
    Happy for Steve Carell. I think he’s quite an underrated actor. Pleased to see him get some recognition.
    Surprised at no Amy Adams. I would’ve slotted her over Reese actually. No opinion on Aniston not getting in. Would’ve been good just to see the internet implode over it but eh.
    Really disappointed that Ava didn’t get a best director nod for Selma. Also disappointed that David Oyelowo didn’t sneak in for Selma. He’s such a great actor.
    • noway says:
      I don’t know if it was loving Bradley so much, as it seemed like American Sniper was getting dissed at all the other award shows. Now the trailers could just be really well done, but that movie looks to be really good!!! Bradley Cooper actually looks like he might be amazing in it and better than his other two Oscar nominated performances. I think the academy may have just been rectifying an omission on other award shows.
  32. A.Key says:
    Can’t believe J. Gyllenhaal didn’t get nominated, what a joke.
  33. Say What!? says:
    No Jolie? No Unbroken? But I thought it was the film to beat. At least that’s what I heard through most of 2014. Even a $30 million ad campaign and a year long hustle by the Jolie couldn’t make it happen. Spot should have gone to Selma director not Foxcatcher I think it’s because unlike 12 Years a white dude doesn’t come riding in at the end to save the day.
    Happy for Marion. She’s always amazing. Much better choice than Adams or Aniston.
    No Jakey. I’m sad about that. Happy that Dern got nominated. I never stood the appeal of Renee Russo.
    • ne says:
      It is only her second directorial effort! She will be fine. Many directors have to make many films before they really get it right.
      It has done amazing at the box office, which in the end is more important to the studios financing it. The audience has responded very positively.
    • The Original G says:
      I don’t get the shade on Angelina for this. Ridley Scott’s Exodus and Chris Nolan’s Interstellar, both with hot seasoned directors spent the same kind of money and got no noms. Who is tsking at them? Angelina earned her next film and I have a feeling that Unbroken will have long legs. Selecting an inspirational story was a good long term strategic move.
      • Janet says:
        Eastwood didn’t get a nom either, which is surprising under the circumstances. But Aniston’s devastated fans were counting on her to get a nom after all that fake buzz her PR team created.
      • lisa2 says:
        Because Jennifer didn’t get a nod so now it has to turn to Angelina not getting a nod for Unbroken. It was her 2nd movie. Only her first big Studio film. I think the BO success is great; and she has other Directing work in the future.
        so not a lost at all. Why this has to be another lets rag on Angie because Jennifer’s dream didn’t come true.
      • Onthefly says:
        @Tarsha; I think thats a rather petty and mean thing to say. No where do I see Say What! comparing the two actresses, so why do you feel compelled to do so? The level of competition between the two groups of fans is concerning to say the least. LOL does cake not receiving any nominations make Unbroken a better movie?
  34. The Original G says:
    Im not a fan of Jen’s acting, but I think she did accomplished something very valuable for herself. She changed the conversation about her acting. I’ll be interested to see how she follows up in her career.
    • coco says:
      Sure, those big roles are now coming her way, NOT!
    • k says:
      agree, orginal g.
      i hope this gives her a wider variety of roles to choose from.
    • The Original G says:
      Well, being a middle aged woman in HW, she’s going to have to make those opportunities for herself in probable indies films and I personal doubt she has the commitment to do so. But we’ll see.
    • MtnRunner says:
      Same here. I plan to see Cake when it comes to my theaters. I want Jen doing something more interesting and I hope this is a springboard to better projects.
    • Someonestolemyname says:
      Jenn and Huvane were the ones creating the conversation, the problem is not many inside the big Academy’s were buying it. She is respected by SAG as a tv actress, for her years in Friends.Imo
    • Becky1 says:
      I think a good move for JA at this point would be getting cast in a quality cable or Netflix show like “The Affair,” “House of Cards” etc. So many of the more interesting roles are on TV (particularly non-network TV).
      This is slightly off topic, but the best acting I’ve seen this year has been on TV. I thought Ruth Wilson (the female lead in “The Affair”) was fabulous as well as Frances McDormand and Richard Jenkins in “Olive Kitteridge” on HBO. I’m curious to see Julianne Moore in “Still Alice,” though…I’ve never seen her in anything where she wasn’t good.
  35. DenG says:
    Won’t Brad Pitt be motivated to attend Oscar awards for Selma’s best picture nom?
    • Hautie says:
      I didn’t hear his name called for Selma. But I heard Oprah’s!
      Will he even get an Oscar if his name was not part of the names listed this morning?
      • Lilacflowers says:
        I think they do get the hardware but they limit the number of producers who get to go up on stage and speak.
  36. j says:
    happy with all the grand budapest love
    im ok with a lot of these, i know ppl are mad at bc but i really loved his performance *shrugs* Sad no jake G or david O though
    not surprised about unbroken, it wasnt well received
    it’s funny with the best picture noms. all of them have RT scores of 90 or above, like usual, except TTOE (79) and American Sniper (74), neither of which i liked lol
    im guessing Keaton will win but i was left a bit cold by birdman as a whole, so i hope grand budapest rn, i still have one left to see
    • Anne tommy says:
      C’mon ladies, When we say BC we need to clarify if it’s cooper or cumberbatch, sometimes it’s obvious from context, other times not. Disappointed for jake and Ralph, both excellent, and will be rooting for Ed Norton though I don’t expect him to win. Ethan Hawke well deserved nom too. Cooper is fine in the right role. Am so bored with the endless Streep nominations, she’s good but for gods sake…
  37. Janet says:
    How come only 8 movies nominated instead of ten?
    DuVernay wuz robbed. 🙁
  38. Guesto says:
    Re Unbroken and the 3 technical nominations, would they not be enough to get the Jolie to turn up? Surely she should in order to support the people who helped tell the story she’s plainly passionate about and so passionately promoted?
    I think it would the respectful thing to do, to be honest.
    • I thought so too–I’d say that maybe the actors don’t need to come, but if I was the director and producers (especially since they all worked on the movie and had direct interaction with each other for months)…I’d go.
    • Josephine says:
      I think she’ll also be there b/c Pitt is a producer on Selma, so they both have something to support.
  39. Ally8 says:
    Oh noes, many more weeks of Bendy’s awkward but relentless campaigning ahead….
    • PunkyMomma says:
      (Rubs hands in glee . . .)
    • 'P'enny says:
      🙁
      Congrats to Benny, but no more! Please. I cant take any more PR stuff.
    • mazzie says:
      Gah. Hopefully he sits back and thinks for a bit then realizes he ain’t going to get it. Then he goes away.
      • anon says:
        May be he would , but it is not like it is his choice entirely is it? He signed up for the PR for the movie and he has to do whatever it is he is told to do.
        Some actors rebel , and that is all good and fine, it is their choice. But it always hurts their career. And it looks to me like the career/ work is the most important thing to BC so he’ll never jeopardize it like that.
    • OhDear says:
      * offers popcorn and Jager *
    • OriginalTessa says:
      I think the nomination was the major goal here, right? Right?
    • Gracie says:
      Maybe it’s time to work on that facial expression.
    • AG-UK says:
      He’s made his statement how proud he was and honored and his parents “who are actors” for him to tell them he was nominated his proudest moment.
    • MtnRunner says:
      Should we expect a wedding in the next month to give him yet another PR talking point? There’s not a lot more “surprises” he can spring on us that would serve his campaign at this point.
    • md1979 says:
      Agree. Can’t take the Bendy over-saturation. Went from being a big fan to not bothering to even click on the links to YET.ANOTHER.INTERVIEW. Am sick of the quirky hijinx and photobombing too.
  40. the other Kate says:
    2 nominations for “Ida”, polish movie – I am so happy! 🙂
    • Yes, I saw that on netflix–I didn’t know it was in contention for anything!
      • MtnRunner says:
        So glad you mentioned it’s on Netflix… adding it to my list, along with Immigrant, which I missed when it was out.
      • Lilacflowers says:
        We watched “Ida” and the nominated documentary “Virunga” on Netflix last night. Several of the other documentaries and foreign films are available too.
  41. InvaderTak says:
    So I’m torn now. I finally got around to seeing Foxcatcher, and I might be taking Steve Carrell over Michael Keaton. I’m kinda surprised at Emma Stone. I didn’t think she was all that remarkable.
    Grand Budapest Hotel for the surprise best picture upset!
    • PunkyMomma says:
      I didn’t think Emma Stone’s performance was Oscar worthy at all.
      • OriginalTessa says:
        This is an unpopular opinion, but I think she’s a really bad actress. Actually bad, not even passable. I’d rather watch Carey Mulligan or Ellen Page in almost all of the roles she’s played.
      • InvaderTak says:
        Omg I thought I was the only one! I just can’t understand it. She seems to always be the same character in everything. And I really hated Easy A. There, I said it.
    • boredsuburbanhousewife says:
      +1 for Grand Budapest. I just loved loved loved that movie, and it’s stayed with me in a funny kind of way. Who knew Ralph F could play such amazing subtle comedy?
      We still joke at my house about “remembering to wear your ‘L’Air du Panache’.”
      • k says:
        utterly thrilled 🙂
        i am not much of a movie goer, but i saw gbh twice.
        such a delightful waste of time, on many levels.
      • Diana B says:
        So happy. I was not expecting to like Grand Budapest Hotel so much . I like being pleaseantly surprised.
      • MtnRunner says:
        This is the one movie I plan to watch over and over again. Best movie across the board and a feast for the senses.
      • md1979 says:
        LOVED this film. Watched it two nights in a row, with different friends / family of differing age groups and genders. Everyone loved it.
        So many good lines, too.
  42. Lindy79 says:
    They can’t hold an Oscar ceremony without a nomination for Meryl Streep. I am now utterly convinced of it
    I await next year when she is nominated for best foreign language film.
  43. ell says:
    so glad felicity jones, marion cotillard and rosamund pike got a nom, and I do love keira although imo her performance wasn’t oscar worthy.
    can’t believe cooper got nominated, he’s so meh in everything. jake g, ralph fiennes or david oyelowo should have been nominated instead.
    lol about aniston.
  44. Mike says:
    I saw #CAKE and was very impressed with Jennifer’s performance. That being said, this is only the first (or second, if you include Good Girl) doing something different. It got enough recognition where she can continue getting juicy roles and actually get nominated for something more high profile
    • Josephine says:
      You forgot Derailed (which was truly awful). It will be interesting to see where this goes. The movie had no financial success, so I’m not sure she’ll get dramatic leading roles in anything with a budget, but if she were smart, she would stick to ensembles anyway. Too much pressure to try to open a big movie and her comedic work was always as part of a decent cast. Frankly, I think she should stick to comedy. She’s good at it, and there is nothing wrong with being a strong comedic actress.
      • Mike says:
        I think once you see Cake you’ll change your mind. I had seriously low expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed it. She was believable as a suffering, bitter woman from start to finish. It hasn’t made money because it won’t be released wide in theaters until a week from tomorrow.
      • Josephine says:
        Maybe, Mike. I had to say that I didn’t enjoy her in the trailer, but that’s not really my kind of movie anyway. I still don’t think this will propel into her into movies that rely on her name to open, but I’ve been wrong plenty of times before!
    • Janet says:
      I think she’ll go back to rom-coms behind this. She’s definitely a creature of habit. And she’ll probably figure venturing out of her safety zone didn’t pay off, so why bother?
      • Amy Tennant says:
        But she wants to be a superhero! Preferably Lorelei from the X-Men, I think, a mutant stripper with prehensile hair…
      • md1979 says:
        I don’t think she has a fan base that wants to see her in anything but rom-coms. I imagine the people who pay to see meet the millers, horrible bosses, etc aren’t the same group that are going to pay to see her in cake or good girl.
        The only thing I like about her getting to play a more ‘interesting’ role in cake is that she is a middle aged woman in hollywood, so good for her for scoring that.
    • DJ says:
      @Mike… I have not seen Cake, but will. I totally agree with you on the serious acting roles, from what I have read, that will come her way, due to her performance in Cake.
      • Amy Tennant says:
        Her Oscar campaign did benefit her, I think. Just having her name mentioned in contention will help.
      • Someonestolemyname says:
        The problem is ,it was her PR, Huvane buying all the mentions.
        The Academy clearly was not interested.
      • Amy Tennant says:
        Yep, that’s clear. But maybe casting directors were fooled.
  45. Duckie says:
    I’m so bummed Ava Duvernay wasn’t nominated!How can the director of a picture with excellent reviews not being nominated? Also disappointed for Jake and Jessica Chastain. On another note Marion Cotillard was a pleasant surprise.
  46. Sabrina says:
    I’m surprised that Bradley Cooper got a nomination; I would much rather preferred Jake to get one instead of him.
    I’m glad that Marion Cotillard got nominated but think it was unnecessary for Meryl Streep to get a nomination. I sure that the others such as Jessica Chastain for ‘ A Most Violent Year’ would have been a better choice and more deserving.
  47. MtnRunner says:
    The big category noms were pretty safe for the most part. With the exception for the nods that Foxcatcher (surprise!), Grand Budapest and Two Days, One Night received, everything else was pretty much mainstream fare.
    Glad to see Budapest get a lot of love, sad to see Spall and Jakey G get snubbed in favor of Cumby. That’s all I gotta say.
    • Luna says:
      Cumby was locked as were Eddie and Keaton.
      Don’t let your hate win over reality.
    • MtnRunner says:
      Forgot Oyelowo… he should have been on the list too.
      Luna, no hate, just felt his performance was overrated and the movie overhyped. I was hoping Ben might be the *surprise* snub.
      • md1979 says:
        Agree with MtnRunner. TIG was massively overhyped, thought Bendy was just OK, Keira was just OK… I’m frankly shocked TIG received a nomination for best screenplay, given the gross historical inaccuracies.
      • MtnRunner says:
        Same here, md1979. Not a bad film, I didn’t hate it. But I don’t understand how other screenwriters voted for it with all the historical inaccuracies, cheese-ball lines and sometimes laughable dialogue.
      • scarf girl says:
        I agree with what is said, but Bendy’s performance was the best thing about that film. I was more moved by Oweloyo, and wanted to see Jake on the list because I felt he was so good. It isn’t necessarily that the Bendy performance wasn’t nomination worthy, just a crowded field and I thought other performances were more noteworthy given the overall project. God I hope that makes sense to someone other than me.
        Pulling for Keaton, but wouldn’t mind a Carrell surprise win.
      • MtnRunner says:
        scarf girl, I hear ya. I did think that Ben over-acted a bit in the movie (just my take on it), but I mainly cringed at the OTT fabricated conflict and the sometimes cheesy dialogue. Like you said, it wasn’t a noteworthy performance as others were. I wish I had liked it more, because I’m fascinated with Turing and Enigma and it’s gotten me researching it more on my own.
  48. Ella says:
    No Aniston!!! Best news today. Her head was getting a little too big.
    Marion shows you do not have to campaign aggressively when you have the performance and talent that can speak on their own.
    How will Aniston top no makeup the next time she tries & fails to get Oscar nominated??
    • Lilacflowers says:
      She’ll shave her head.
    • Janet says:
      I bet a dollar to a donut hole “Cake” bombs behind this.
      • Luca76 says:
        Cake is officially DOA with no nomination. It will probably show up in a streaming format.
      • Janet says:
        Luca, can you believe this — it’s already streaming FREE prior to its release date. Not a good sign.
        I haven’t seen a single trailer for this movie on the TV or any advertisements in the media. Were they relying on word of mouth or were they counting on an Oscar nom to do all the advertising for them?
    • Gracie says:
      But I have been under the impression that she was just campaigning to get her name out or stay in the spotlight, so to speak. It didn’t look like she was campaigning to actually be nominated or win.
      • Ella says:
        She sure was! Do not be so naive.
        Why would you hire a very well known OSCAR consultant, if you were not trying for an OSCAR nomination? Why would you be bringing up dead ex’s who are sending you Justin?
  49. PunkyMomma says:
    The Supporting Actor and Actresses categories are fantastic! I think Julianne Moore and Michael Keaton are locks. So glad The Grand Budaphest Hotel received some nods, too.
  50. Kitten says:
    Wow, peeps are still super-invested in these sham awards huh?
    Let me know when the fashion posts are in, because otherwise I don’t give a rat’s ass about the Oscars.
    • Onthefly says:
      +1 🙂
    • Veronica says:
      Lol, I find the Oscars more interesting from a political and fashion standpoint. It’s pretty obvious that campaigning is as much a part of the process as anything else. “Sham” is a pretty good way to put it, but then what else could a “historical” award show dedicated to patting people on the back for being a good liar for two hours possibly be?
  51. Franny Days says:
    I have NEVER found Bradley Cooper attractive in anything, but something about his character in American Sniper. Maybe it was the accent, maybe it was the buff, but whatever it was changed my view of him entirely.
  52. The Original Mia says:
    No Jake. Boo.
    No Jen. Hahahahahahaha.
    Really happy for Selma. Boo on the Academy for not nominating Ava or David.
    Other than that, I’m good. Rooting for Selma, Michael Keaton, JK Simmons, Julianne Moore, and Patricia Arquette/Laura Dern.
  53. I’m excited about the Ruffalo….I’ve always had a minor crush on him. Maybe I’m totally projecting, but he seems like he’s a giant, cuddly teddy bear, lol. And I am jealous of his hair!!!
  54. KatyD says:
    Booo–so many omissions, yet again. I’m really bummed about Gyllenhaal, Ava, Adams, and Chastain not being included. Gyllenhaal’s go-for-broke performance was amazing, Ava did the unthinkable in Hollywood–become a successful minority woman director–and we need many more like her, Adams and Chastain have both been great. In particular, Chastain was amazing in the little-seen Eleanor Rigby. I’m really bummed about her. 🙁 0h well, perhaps another year will be the one for her, I hope.
  55. Gia says:
    Poor Jake. Lol at Jennifer Aniston — if you need to campaign that hard to buy votes you are obviously not worthy. Amy Adams is overrated and am thrilled for Laura Dern. She is usually the one who gets snubbed.
    • chaine says:
      Jake just chewed up the scenery–I thought he was just too over the top. I suppose this is the last we’ll ever hear of “Cake.”
  56. mika says:
    these have got to be the whitest nominations in years…
  57. Maya says:
    This is the whitest Academy Awards in recent years. Not a single black person got nominated.
    I love Eastwood but Ava deserved that spot while David deserved over Bradley.
    Not sad Angelina didn’t get a nod because this is only her second movie. She will be back and I have a hunch she will be nominated for direction next year for By The Sea.
    Angelina will difinetely show up at the Oscars with Brad – especially since it got nominated for 3 categories. Their longterm friend Roger Deakins is nominated and he will finally win this year. Plus Selma is up for best movie and that’s Brad’s company.
    I am also very glad Marion got in instead of few others – that woman just proved that you can get nominated by the talent alone and without a desperate campaign.
    • MtnRunner says:
      Oyelowo should have been included on the actor list. He was amazing in Selma.
    • bette says:
      Eastwood didn’t get nominated. And unless you’ve seen American Sniper, I would wait to say who deserved it.
      Selma had a bit of a backlash because Selma unfairly trashes LBJ as King’s dirty-dealing antagonist as opposed to the partner to King he really was. He was all for the march, and the historical revision left a bad feeling with a lot of people. The director argued that it was all true in spite of the facts. She could have just said she took creative license with the film
      • noway says:
        Yes I think Selma’s historical inaccuracies may have doomed it. For the life of me I don’t know why they did that. Was the story not interesting enough as it truly happened.
        Hollywood finally may be getting it. When you show a piece of dramatic history, you can dramatize the story but you really shouldn’t alter its meaning or significance. Now it happened to a degree with Argo, but as that whole piece of history was classified and people didn’t realize it until much later. Selma just totally got LBJ’s legacy wrong. Now he wasn’t a perfect President by any shake of stick, but in this instance he deserves to be shown for what really happened and I found that disappointing.
      • Duckie says:
        Well that’s not exactly what Ava said in that interview.
        She didn’t want to make a “white saviour movie”, as the script before her intervention seemed to suggest. Moreover she didn’t “demonize” LBJ or rewrite history. Imo Ava just showed that LBJ was a flawed individual who also made choices for his own gain, description that can be applied to most politicians.
      • Josephine says:
        I’ve studied that time period pretty extensively, and I have to say that LBJ was complicated. He was pro Civil Rights, but only so far as it did not complicate his political position, and there was plenty of underlying racism in what he did and said. I think he did many good things and backed so many good programs, but he was no hero.
      • TheOnlyDee says:
        The Imitation Game and Foxcatcher took a lot liberties, too. Foxcatcher I understand, because it happened over a long period of time, but The Imitation Game just made things up even though Turing’s story was already interesting enough. I haven’t seen Selma yet, so I cannot judge the inaccuracies.
      • j says:
        imo there’s nothing wrong with inaccuracies in historical movies as long as it isn’t super harmful (ie like saying a person killed someone when they didn’t) or billed as 100% accurate. no audience expects to learn all the facts from a movie that isn’t an actual documentary
        historical dramas like Selma often edit or take creative license to cover side subjects or themes that wouldnt be possible otherwise, and to meet time constraints
      • MtnRunner says:
        The historical inaccuracies in TIG were greater than in Selma. Even if LBJ was painted in a more negative light, if it serves the overall story, I’m willing to overlook it. I’ve seen all but two of the Oscar buzzed movies and I’d put Selma in my top 3 for the year. Sad to see that David and Ava didn’t get recognized for their outstanding work.
      • md1979 says:
        I do have issues with gross historical inaccuracies in historical films and ‘biopic’ movies like TIG. There’s a great, very objective article at Slate about TIG:
        http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2014/12/03/the_imitation_game_fact_vs_fiction_how_true_the_new_movie_is_to_alan_turing.html
        It mentions that families of some of the characters took issue with how their relatives were portrayed in the movie and how TIG literally just completely LEFT OUT of history Turing’s predecessors and co-inventor. I just can’t imagine being the family of these persons and having to sit through these sham awards… it would piss me off more than Aniston being nominated!!
        “However, the central conceit of The Imitation Game—that Turing singlehandedly invented and physically built the machine that broke the Germans’ Enigma code—is simply untrue. The first version of the “Bombe”—the name given to the large, ticking machine that used rotors to test different letter combinations—was invented by Polish cryptanalysts before Turing even began working as a cryptologist for the British government. Turing’s great innovation was to design a new model of the Bombe that broke the Enigma code faster by looking for likely letter combinations and ruling out combinations that were unlikely to yield results. Turing didn’t develop the new, improved Bombe by dint of his own singular genius—the mathematician Gordon Welchman, who is not even mentioned in the film, collaborated with Turing on the design.”
      • MtnRunner says:
        md1979, thanks for this. I came out of the theater thinking I’d seen a decent drama, but had missed the real story. Have you seen the docudrama Codebreaker on Netflix? It’s really good and much more satisfying in terms of getting Turing’s true story of the breaking of Enigma.
        There was a good article on the Selma LBJ controversy here:
        http://moviepilot.com/posts/2015/01/12/much-ado-about-nothing-the-misplaced-controversy-surrounding-the-historical-accuracy-of-selma-2580567?lt_source=external,manual,manual
      • Veronica says:
        But why punish Selma if you’re not going to hold Foxcatcher and American Sniper to the same standard? That’s part of why I think people are reacting so strongly to the snub.
      • J says:
        @md1979, maybe i’m losing it, but theres nothing about real life families taking issue with tig in there. turing’s family liked it is all i heard
        feel free to disagree obviously, but i got why selma and tig changed what they did in a lot of instances.
        and yeah, Veronica, neither Selma (the most accurate this year tbh) or TIG are as riddled with inaccuracies as Foxcatcher, American Sniper or technically TTOE
        the biggest whoa is American Sniper, since Eastwood went by the book, which was discredited as being full of lies
        it’s hard to tell if selma is being punished for a special reason or someone is running a smear campaign thou. ‘factual inaccuracies’ is a tried and true oscar smear tactic
      • A says:
        Yeah, neither Selma or TIG are as off as Foxcatcher. For example, the brothers’ parents are dead in the movie but still alive in real life, they also never trained together, and the film completely left out DuPont’s mental illness. The surviving brother has been ripping it to shreds on social media.
        American Sniper is literally bullshit. It’s hard to even call it inaccurate since a lot of it was just made up by the guy.
  58. Luna says:
    I have to admit. I’m VERY happy that Aniston didn’t get nominated.
  59. anon says:
    The best actors/ actress category si very tight this year, isn’t it? No spot for Amy Adams (Reese stole it, how dare she !) and David O or Jake G. I thought they’d all be nominated. I also wanted Fiennes. But when I look at who they should replace, all I am seeing is Bradley Cooper and that is just one spot, not two or three for men. And then Amy should’ve been included isntead of Reese. That is just a travesty.
  60. Stephanie says:
    I’m SO happy Rosamund Pike got the nod! She was wonderful in Gone Girl.
  61. B. says:
    I am really surprised that Amy Adams didn’t get a nomination. I love her! But so happy for Julianne Moore. I hope she wins. Meryl, I love you, but she needs to quit being nominated for literally every role LOL I’m sad Jennifer Aniston didn’t get nominated but I think her turn in ‘Cake’ will be a good turning point for her career. But no Jakey G?
    A lot of these nominations are surprising me today!
  62. Maggie says:
    So happy for The Imitation Game. Eight nominations.
    Well done Morten, Graham, Benedict and Keira. Was thrilled that Desplat also got nominated for the score, which I loved.
    Well done Birdman and the GBH which received nine nominations each.
  63. Jennifer1221 says:
    Can I just say that I watched Boyhood with my sixteen year old son last night and we both LOVED it SO much! Well deserved nominations for that movie!
    • AG-UK says:
      I loved it too, will watch again with my 14 y/o but it made me really sad at the end I know that will be me at some point when mine is off to college.
  64. Nene says:
    Wow, Bradley Cooper aka Mr Biegyshortz got a nom. Am rather surprised…
    I think the nominations this year was quite predictable and boring.
    Am rooting for Julianne Moore for best actress. That’s all.
  65. L says:
    Emma Stone is officially an Academy Award nominated actress! I never saw the movie and I highly doubt she’ll win, but wow my jaw dropped when I saw that. And Steve Carrel! Exciting.
  66. Adrien says:
    Too many white people.
    I thought Cotillard was excellent in The Immigrant. Surprised to see her nominated in another film.
    No Gyllenhaal. Hmmm! Hmmmpp!!!
    Why do they hate Selma so much? Too many major noms for Boyhood and just one for Selma?
  67. Suzy from Ontario says:
    My husband and son went to see Nightcrawler and said Jake Gyllenhal was amazing and definitely should’ve gotten an Oscar nom for it.
    I saw the Imitation Game and it was incredible. Ben Batch was really good in it and I hope he wins the Oscar and that it wins Best Picture. But then again I haven’t seen many of the others nominated so my choice is defnitely biased. 🙂
  68. Liv says:
    Please do a story about Jennifer’s ex’s wife ( ‘one who got away’ and died from brain tumor) reaction
    • Jayna says:
      I read that.
      I thought Jen’s comments, when I first read them were so insensitive, and seemed used for effect for an inteview while running for Oscar nominee. It so turned me off to Jennifer, and I like her.
      And, no, he didn’t bring you Justin. He’s up there, if there is an up there, thinking of his wife and kids and mother, etc.
      I thought the widow’s response was so filled with class.
      • The Original Mia says:
        Daniel’s wife could have been much harsher than she was. Jen tried to use sympathy to get an Oscar nom. Shame on her. She was so focused on what she wanted she totally disregarded his loved ones. The people he truly loved and didn’t want to leave behind. I’m glad she didn’t get the nomination. I’m glad she wasted all that money.
  69. JosieJ says:
    I’m very surprised Steve Carell was nominated. Sad Jake was not nominated. I’ll probably get pounded for this but I am sick of all things Benedict Cumberbatch. I just don’t get it!
    I’m so happy for The Grand Budapest Hotel and so happily surprised for Marion Cotillard.
    • Josefa says:
      Bendy’s becoming overexposed. Between his own actions and that of his fanatics, I think his oscar campaign has been more exhausting than Anne Hathaway’s. Yeah, I said it. He’s more exhausting than Ann freaking E.
      • anon says:
        Whatever you feel about Cumberbatch as a person he is an outstanding actor. Have you seen him in TIG? If you look at available Turing’s photos and then Cumberbatch’s face in that movie it almost looks like he rearranged his facial bones to have the exact same facial expression as Turing. It is amazing. He completely disappears into his role in everything he does.
      • Josefa says:
        @anon
        I didn’t make any comments about his acting abilities, though. I didn’t watch TIG, but I’ve watched Sherlock and I’m aware he’s more than capable. I’m just saying he’s becoming really overexposed and reading about him is becoming exhausting.
  70. Adiellybelle says:
    Havent seen Nightcrawler but BCoop was really fantastic in American Sniper i have to say. Not Surprised about his acting nom but more surprised about the Best Picture nom. Im most dissapointed for Chastain. I cant wait to see that film! I think the Imitation game is overrated as a film. The nom for Keira as well. Happy for the Grand Budapest Hotel and Boyhood but that comes as no surprise.
  71. frivolity says:
    It speaks volumes that Selma was nearly universally snubbed and that one of the most important films of the year – Kill the Messenger – was completely ignored.
    • FingerBinger says:
      Does it really speak volumes? American Sniper was shut out of the Golden Globes and most award show too. Clint Eastwood didn’t get a best director nod either.
    • Lilacflowers says:
      I thought Kill the Messenger was very good
  72. reg says:
    I still don’t understand why Foxcatcher did not get best picture, its better then Whiplash
  73. Josefa says:
    Well this is interesting. A lot of things didn’t go as planned.
    – I’m upset Selma didn’t get more noms – especially David and ESPECIALLY Ava. I haven’t seen the film – but some racial diversity wouldn’t harm. And how often does a black female director have oscar buzz around her?
    – I’m actually glad for Bradley Cooper. I know he’s not popular here, but I do consider him one of the most talented actors of his generation. He’s incredibly versatile – which is something I particularly appreciate nowadays were all actors feel typecasted.
    – Good for Marion Cotillard and Laura Dern. Who saw that coming?
    – Even though it’s not shocking I’m really happy for Emma Stone. Love her!
    – I hope Wild Tales takes the foreign oscar. That film was so, so good.
    – I like Amy Adams but she wasn’t robbed. Big Eyes was a mediocre film and Amy has done much, much better than that.
  74. reg says:
    Here are my predictions
    Best Picture The Grand Budapest Hotel
    Best Actress Rosamund Pike Gone Girl
    Best Actor Eddie Redmayne The Theory of Everything
    Best Director Richard Linklater Boyhood
    Best Supporting Actress Patricia Arquette Boyhood
    Best Supporting Actor Mark Ruffalo Foxcatcher
    Best Foreign Film Leviathan
    Best Screenplay Birdman
    Best Documentary Citizen Four
  75. OTHER RENEE says:
    Disappointed about Spall being snubbed. He was amazing in “Mr. Turner”. Did a happy dance about Jennifer not being nominated. Happy about all the noms for Grand Budapest.
  76. Paloma says:
    Is Jen hitting the ice cream or the liquor this morning? She probably didn’t sleep last night eagerly awaiting the phone call ……..
  77. littlestar says:
    No Aniston, YAY, but Reece Witherspoon? UGH.
  78. ellesbelles says:
    Part of me hoped Ben would get snubbed, as an extended snub to Harvey. I think he’s a long shot. My money is on Keaton or Eddie Redmayne coming in like a dark horse again.
    I actually sat through the entire GG awards which I normally dont do. I think I need to stock up on booze if I’m going to sit through the Oscars :/
  79. rudy says:
    Cannot BELIEVE they didn’t nominate Ava DuVernay. What idiots.
    Ever since Brokeback Mountain lost Best Picture but got every other reward, I have soured on the Oscars.
  80. Coco says:
    I’m so disappointed by Jake Gyllenhaal snub… can’t believe they went for Cooper, his third nom, who do they think he is? Marlon Brando?
    • Lilacflowers says:
      Could be worse. Jonah Hill could be getting his third nomination. I still don’t understand how Jonah Hill has one nomination, never mind two.
  81. captain hero says:
    So Ikea knightly is now an academy award nominee. I can’t wait to win all the grammys next year. I deserve it, despite the fact that I’m the worst singer in the world. I deserve to win a Grammy like Keira knightly deserves to be nominated for an Oscar.
  82. Diana B says:
    I must be the only one not happy about Cotillard’s nomination. I just don’t see it, she has never done it for me. I would have much rather they nominated Amy Adams. Oh well.
    Incredibly surprised and happy about Emma Stone’s nomination. I love her to pieces and even though I haven’t seen Birdman (soon hopefully), I’m sure she did great.
  83. JosieJ says:
    I like Emma Stone but I don’t think she deserved an Oscar for that role. She was pretty forgettable in the movie. Now Edward Norton stole the movie but I don’t think he can beat JK Simmons, who I have been impressed with since Oz. I am so happy for him. A big F U to Miles Teller. Now do you know who he is? You big jerk!
    I love Meryl and think she is good in everything BUT that does not mean she deserves a nomination in everything. That spot should have gone to someone else.
    • MtnRunner says:
      Miles is a big jerk. Happy to see him get ignored this season and JK get all the love he’s getting from the critics and awards voters.
    • Josefa says:
      I agree on Meryl. She’s great in every role she does, obviously, but I feel like this year and the last there were women much more deserving of her nom.
    • Lilacflowers says:
      I’ve seen all the supporting actor roles and I think JK Simmons deserves it the most but having Duvall in that category scares me. I call that the “old coot life time achievement” award because Oscar voters tend to give that one to the oldest guy in the category. Jared Leto was an exception last year.
  84. Kimmy says:
    Dear Emma, Keira, Julianne, Marion, and Sienna,
    PLEASE bring the balls to the wall FASHION. You are all capable of it.
    Thanks.
  85. db says:
    At this point, I feel like Meryl gets nominated just for showing up for work. It’s been a while since Meryl really worked deep for a role, know what I mean? And Into the Woods ain’t it. I’d much rather someone else have taken that slot.
  86. Lucy2 says:
    Not too many surprises. Happy to see Steve Carell get recognized, disappointed for Jake G and Amy Adams.
    Disappointed the director of Selma didn’t get a nomination.
  87. MMW says:
    WOW! I must say I am EXTREMELY disappointed in the best actress category! Rosamonde Pike is a good actress; however, she was much more effective in An Education. She was OK in Gone Girl but NOTHING to write home about. The only reason everyone here is touting her performance is due in part to their minimal exposure to her acting in general. Amy Adams delivered a nom-worthy performance in Big Eyes. THE ACADEMY DID HER A DISSERVICE THIS YEAR, as the subtly of her performance was incredible. Marion Cortillard is always wonderful, but honestly I’ve been on the fence about even seeing her movie. Reese Witherspoon was decent in into the wild, but it was a stretch and perhaps a little too much of one. Felicity Jones was eh in TTOE. Eddie’s performance was incredible. I couldn’t stand the movie but his performance was great! The only performance I am excited about seeing is Still Alice. All in all this year was stacked so that Julianne Moore could finally take home her Oscar….
    • Josefa says:
      I seriously don’t get the hype over Amy Adams’ performance in Big Eyes. She was the best part of the movie, but the whole thing was just mediocre. Amy is very talented – but I have yet to be convinced she can carry a movie as the lead. She was great in Hustle, but I was far more interested in JLaw’s and BCoop’s characters. She’s much, much better in supporting roles imo.
      • anon says:
        > I seriously don’t get the hype over Amy Adams’ performance in Big Eyes –
        But was Reese better than Amy Adams?
      • Josefa says:
        @anon
        I haven’t seen Wild, but I think Reese is very, very good when handed the right script. So yeah, maybe so.
      • Veronica says:
        I actually thought Adams was the standout in American Hustle, though I’d be curious to see how that film would have gone down with the original casting. (Adams and Lawrence’s roles were flipped in order to give Adams the lead.) J. Law’s character was fun but not one that I think could really survive being a main character – that frenetic energy could get grating if on screen too long.
        I think Amy Adams is a good actress, but I do find some of her more dramatic portrayals overlap at times. “Big Eyes” was a disappointment because she was really good in it, but the film itself nosedives in quality about 2/3 of the way in. There was one scene in particular where I remember thinking to myself, “This has killed any chance of this film getting Oscar nominations.”
  88. Lea says:
    The #OscarsSoWhite tag on Twitter is cracking me up!
    • Alarmjaguar says:
      Awesome! Many a true word is spoken in jest…
    • word says:
      I just searched some of that hashtag. People are making some valid points. But we need to remember the majority of the actors nominated deserve to be nominated…let’s not take that away from them. We need to see more black/hispanic/asian etc. people on the big screen and small screen so they can show their talents as well. I’m not going to be mad at the actors that were nominated, it’s not their fault. This is a much bigger problem…the blame lies elsewhere.
      • Blythe says:
        Honestly, take any other actor out of the Best Actor category and replace them with David Oyelowo. Michael Keaton and Eddie Redmayne can stay. Bradley isn’t much to me.
  89. jojo says:
    who wants to bet that Aniston’s next role will be a topless ‘risque’ one? Thats usually what desperate actresses do when they want to win an oscar: “Look at me, i’m taking a risk..’
  90. reg says:
    I tried watching American Sniper its more of a lifetime movie, very slow, too many flashbacks, Im surprised Jake didn’t get nominated for Nightcrawler he was amazing, and Spall for Mr. Turner was better than Cumberbatch in Imitation Game. I am not surprised Aniston was not nominated for Cake, it was okay but not breathtaking. Foxcatcher was stunning and Steve Carell should win best actor but I think it will go to Eddie Redmayne. Do people in the academy actually watch these movies or just send in their ballots, because some of their choices just do not make sense…
    • Miss Melissa says:
      Hollywood loves everything Eastwood. I don’t always agree either. So much of his stuff is celebrated that I just think, “Meh?”
      • Ally8 says:
        After the talking-to-the-Obama-chair moment of crazy/senile at the RNC convention, I’m surprised.
  91. bree says:
    How will Aniston ever top her dreamy & empowering no makeup role?
    If she had worn makeup in Cake, I doubt she would have even got any noms at GG or Sag.
  92. Janet says:
    Unbelievable. “Cake” is already streaming FREE even before its release date.
    • Chelsea says:
      No, it’s not Janet. A screener for Cake was leaked online along with screeners for practically every other Oscar movie this year, from Birdman to Whiplash to Wild to Imitation Game. But nice attempt at anti-Aniston propaganda nonetheless.
      • Janet says:
        If it’s not streaming now, what do you want to bet it will be before the week is out? Because without an Oscar nom, that movie is headed straight to VOD.
  93. Jen43 says:
    I think Eddie Redmayne will take home the Oscar, but I am so pleased for Steve Carell. Actually, this was a pretty good year for the movies.
  94. manta says:
    If Carell, Moore and Stone win, we’ll have a Crazy,stupid, love reunion! (Yeah, I know, not likely).
    On another note, I wonder how anyone supporting Polanski is deemed a despicable human being but Wes Anderson, a guy who not only signed the petition to support him, but stood by it when asked, elicits such a love fest.
    http://movieline.com/2009/10/13/wes-anderson-plays-my-favorite-scene-stands-by-polanski/:
    “You recently signed the petition in support of Roman Polanski,” I asked. “Do you still support that decision?”
    “Yeah,” he replied, with confidence.
    Funny how some can go totally unscathed. Good for him, I guess.
  95. TC says:
    I’m mostly thrilled with the nominations. Would’ve loved to see Ava DuVernay receive a Best Director nomination and David Oyelowo receive a Best Actor nomination for Selma. That was such a great film. Also wished Jake got a nomination for Nightcrawler. Loved him in that. One thing’s for sure, AMPAS really loves Clint Eastwood.
    Happy to see Angelina Jolie get 3 nominations with Unbroken. They weren’t the big ones, but this is only her first major studio directing gig after In the Land of Blood and Honey, so she’s got lots of time to develop and evolve as a director. Her new career as a director will only get better. She clearly has the directorial “chops” and the movie critics have said as much.
    So all in all, Angelina has had a great year: $750M and one Oscar nomination for Maleficent (costume design); $116M (and counting) and three Oscar nominations for Unbroken (cinematography, sound editing and sound mixing). Brad has as well with Fury and Selma getting love from the critics as well as moviegoers. Not too shabby at all.
    • Camille (The Original) says:
      +10000.
    • moi says:
      IMO unbroken is not oscar worthy. the first half of the movie is quite great, but later ( just delited major spoiler) I just stoped seeing Loui as a human being, and I don;t even blame angelina, i think that coen brothers didn’t deliver on a script front. soo many great movies out there about camps ( yeah not japanese ones but still)
      • Lilacflowers says:
        Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence
        Bridge on the River Kwai
        Empire of the Sun
        Paradise Road
        To End All Wars
        The Railway Man
  96. Veronica says:
    I’m echoing Lainey’s feelings – that’s a very lily white nomination list. Selma at least should have picked up a few other nods.
    It’s a shame Gyllenhaal didn’t get one for Nightcrawler – I’ve heard it’s some of his best work. So much for the theory that faux-Democrat land would hold Eastwood back.
    I’ll be looking forward to seeing Cumberbatch getting cockblocked for the Oscar.
  97. Scarlet says:
    Jennifer Aniston didn’t deserve a nomination. Just as gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts didn’t deserve that award. Some actresses are either simply mediocre at best, or really good at playing ” themselves ” for this, no reward. Also, I’m sorry , but Jolie’s direction of unbroken was not good. Selma should awards and American Sniper was phenomenal. My opinions.
  98. tabasco says:
    I think all of us regular people who work (every day, that is, not just a few months a year) for an annual salary that is *less* than a single day’s pay for most of these people, should get ALL the nominations and awards for all the everything! Awards season annoys the hell out of me with all of its already over-privileged idiots self-congratulating each other – – the only thing that saves it for me is the fashion and the occasional host joke in bad taste. I’ll take the dresses and the inappropriate/awkward jokes/moments and leave the rest!
  99. LoisLane says:
    Pffft there is no white male on the best actress list so what are people yelling about?
  100. Cc says:
    Benny, Keira, ROSAMUND! go, go, go!
  101. Carol says:
    I’m happy neither Jolie or Aniston got an Oscar nod. Neither deserved a nomination. But I’m also sad because I really wanted to see them at the Academy Awards show. Now neither of them may show up. Drats!
  102. miller says:
    if steve carell wins, this will be the ultimate form of redemption for never receiving an emmy for his role of michael scott
  103. siri says:
    It’s quite a complicated process before the nominations are out:
    http://popwatch.ew.com/2008/01/09/academy-awards/
    But still, it’s in the end a matter of ‘politics’ within de academy, colleagues voting for their peers- or not. I don’t get why Streep was nominated this time- looks like it is a given by now, whatever she does. I would like Edward Norton to finally get a golden boy, but it’s probably not gonna happen. But I also believe he is one of the few who can live without it. I think not all voters have seen all films, although they are expected to, otherwise, I wouldn’t know how one can overlook Gyllenhaal’s strong performance. Not surprised about Jolie, and Aniston not nominated- perhaps they could have a mojito together to forget their disappointment 😉
  104. Sammi says:
    No Amy Adams!! That makes me really ticked off. She certainly deserves it. The kind of work she has been doing is extraordinary and she should be recognized for it.
  105. bree says:
    From IMDB: hahahhah
    Gold Derby editor Tom O’Neil says that Jennifer Aniston set up a press junket at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills for tomorrow to discuss her Oscar nomination (and I asssume the film as well). Tom says normally junkets are for movies not single stars but she had it set up for just herself. He talks about it on Gold Derby’s stream (start at 10:45)
    http://youtu.be/pvUodEeG3zc?t=10m45s
  106. Misprounced Name Dropper says:
    So Winter Sleep wins Best Picture at Canne but can’t even get a nomination at the Academy Awards? These asshats have no idea. I’ll also make my annual complaint about non-English films being ineligible to win the Best Picture award. Seriously what kind of racist bullshit is that? If Marion Cotillard can be nominated in the Best Actress category why can’t non-English speaking films compete in the Best Film category? Get your shit together Academy!
  107. Kate says:
    Well thank GAWD all of Cumberbatch’s idiocy is being (semi) rewarded with an Oscar nomination (eyeroll). I wonder if he’ll still go off the deep end if he doesn’t win (which I feel pretty sure he won’t).
    At least he has THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE now! (eyeroll #2)
    Sorry for the parentheses everywhere.
  108. I says:
    I’m so glad Marion got recognized. Love Dardenne brothers films.
    I think they snubbed Foxcatcher in purpose because of the wins at Cannes. They do these things all the time so I’m not surprised, but Bradley Cooper three times in a row? You gotta be kidding me.
  109. Dana says:
    My ex-husband is a voting member at the Academy and this is how it works within the film-making community:
    You’ll either win because you have enough friends in the Academy OR you do something so mind-numbingly original that it re-writes film-making textbooks forever OR you get awarded an Oscar because you have a hefty body of work behind you and you’ve earned it. The last category is especially true for Brits it would seem. That said, the process is EXTREMELY political.
    I remember in 2005 when we first got the ballot, I was pushing to vote for “Syriana”, but the way it was explained to me is was that Paul Haggis had joined “the club” and therefore “Crash” would win. And it did.
    The award lost it’s credibility a long time ago when it was determined that Mr. Spielbergand a few others ran the club and made club rules. That’s why you have the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway and Reese Witherspoon winning who have zero theatrical training, zero range and zero acting chops and basically play slight variations of themselves over and over again and keep getting nominated or win and why respected thespians who should have won an award literally decades ago like Judi Dench, Helen Mirren or Ralph Fiennes don’t. Your proximity to the club and certain club members increases your chances of winning substantially.
    Also the club can be very picky – if you come across as too needy, too aggressive or too obnoxious in your campaign (i.e Sharon Stone for “Casino”) you’re not gonna win. This also happened to Michael Fassbender when he kept winning awards and getting nominated for “Shame” yet the Academy completely ignored him for that film and why he refused to go through hell again to campaign for his nomination in “12 years a Slave”.
    So this is who I think may win this year, taking the above into consideration:
    Best Picture: “Boyhood””, this is an example of landmark, re-write the textbooks film-making, the Academy eats this stuff up.
    Best Actress: Juliane Moore, she very well-respected within the community and has never won before. Reese and Marillon have won before already and their films are hardly unique. Felicity and Rosamund are still too green.
    Best Actor: Michael Keaton, the Hollywood community loves films about itself especially about talented but washed up actors who make a comeback. Eddie and Ben are too green, a few more noms in the next few years and they’ll eventually get it. Bradley has the same problem as Leo, perceived as too cocky and entitled. Steve Carell may be the dark horse who no one saw coming.
    Best Director: Richard Linklater for Boyhood – same reason as best film
    Best Supporting Actress: Patricia Arquette for Boyhood, ditto
    Best Supporting Actor: Duvall may get it since he’s considered acting royalty for his acting chops going back to “The Godfather”. Ethan won’t get it since he’s not considered serious enough. It could go to either Mark Ruffalo or Ed Norton.
    Best Documentary: CITIZENFOUR, anything that ruffles the feathers of the State Department and a sexy cause that Liberal Hollywood loves, (i.e state surveillance and an underdog whistleblower like Ed Snowden) will get it.
    Snubs: Ralph Fiennes for “Grand Budapest Hotel”, Ellar Coltrane for “Boyhood”, Bill Murray for “St. Vincent”
      This is really interesting stuff, here. Thanks for sharing!
    • Me says:
      I agree with everything you say except supporting actor – JK Simmons all the way without a doubt!
      • Dana says:
        I wasn’t listing who I think should or deserves to win – rather who most likely will win given the unofficial rules of the club and the politics therein.
    • Kimberly says:
      Dana …………..thanks for sharing 😀
      I hope you’ll share more info next year. 😀
      I like this quote from you comment below.
      “You’ll either win because you have enough friends in the Academy OR you do something so mind-numbingly original that it re-writes film-making textbooks forever OR you get awarded an Oscar because you have a hefty body of work behind you and you’ve earned it. The last category is especially true for Brits it would seem. That said, the process is EXTREMELY political.”
      Yes it’s all politics that in this award show. The same goes for the Golden Globes.
      I thought Michael Fassbender was all sour grapes because he was snubbed but when I think about your comment & after reading a few of his interviews I can’t blame him for not wanting to …….his performance spoke for itself and it’s a shame one has to campaign “in a certain manner” to win an award, even if their acting was superb.
      About the part with Spielberg………..I always had a feeling that he had big part to play in the Academy. He’s a good director but there’s something about this man that rubs me in the wrong way as well.
      As for the list of winners you posted…….I definitely believe you. And I won’t be surprised if you are 100% correct………..and I’m definitely betting that Fiennes will be snubbed big time
      • Dana says:
        The thing that happened to Fassy was that he was getting nominated left, right and centre for just about every awards imaginable for “Shame” so there was a momentum building up and many just assumed he would be nominated for an Oscar. And he and his peeps did campaign hard for it. When the Oscar nomination failed to show up, he just threw in the towel and said “No more”.
        So the following year when he got nominated for “12 YAS”, he didn’t even bother to campaign, he made that very clear to everyone and I can’t say I blame him in the least. Hollywood is a very capricious town. I think Hollywood also forgets that the really talented actors, who are dedicated to their craft and not the cult of celebrity are really artists at heart – not business people, marketers or politicians.
        Spielberg along with Jeff Katzenberg, Michael Ovitz, Michael Eisner run the club. Whatever they say, goes, no questions asked. (not a coincidence, his first wife Amy Irving, practically never worked again or why Crispin Glover is still persona non grata in Lalaland…) It’s also not a coincidence that practically every film he makes automatically gets nominated, even if it’s not that great. He nearly blew a gasket when “Amistad” and ‘War Horse” didn’t win anything. He feels all his films deserve Best Picture. He left being a visionary director years and years ago. Now he just churns out formulaic films.
      • Misprounced Name Dropper says:
        @Dana: Why is Crispin Glover out of favour?
      • Ganger says:
        Dana, I love this quote: “I think Hollywood also forgets that the really talented actors, who are dedicated to their craft and not the cult of celebrity are really artists at heart – not business people, marketers or politicians.” That is so true, and so sad, when you think about. At some point, so many actors DO become business people/marketers or politicians, and that’s when the mystery starts to fade, and poof! suddenly they’re celebrities instead. The smart ones — and I would include Julia Roberts here, even though I can’t stand her — take a step back and move out of H’wood before their celeb status eats them alive. That’s why Jennifer Aniston would be wise to start backing away now so her *work* in Cake is remembered, rather than her campaign to win awards for said work.
      • Dana says:
        Crispin Glover sued Spielberg and Bob Zemekis for use of his image in “Back to the Future II” without actually using Glover himself. They got a stand-in to play George McFly. This actually goes against union rules. If your image is used, you get paid. When the judge ruled in favour of Glover and that rules had been brozen, Spielberg had him black-listed in HW. He couldn’t believe someone could actually go against him and win!
      • Kimberly says:
        Dana…… I agree “capricious town” is definitely a good description of Hollywood in a nutshell and I definitely liked what you said in this quote” :
        “I think Hollywood also forgets that the really talented actors, who are dedicated to their craft and not the cult of celebrity are really artists at heart – not business people, marketers or politicians.”…………Both Granger and I agree with you on this point.
        I remember Ethan Hawke shared similar sentiments on this subject and he’s also very correct.
        I see Joaquin Phoenix has been turned off with awards season for some years now and …………
        Sir Anthony Hopkins was annoyed with the whole campaigning process.
        I remember this quote from him posted on Daily Mail:
        ‘You know, kissing the backside of the authorities that can make or break it; I can’t stand all that. I find it nauseating to watch. Having to be nice to people and to be charming and flirting with them… Oh, come on!’
        In response to your reply regarding Fassbender, I also had high expectations of him getting an Oscar nomination after all the other successes he had before…………when he “threw in the towel” I agree, I think he had every right to.
        LOL at one point in time I thought him being snubbed by The Academy was due to:
        1) the touchy subject of sex addiction presented in Shame and therefore the Academy thought it would be too controversial to nominate him for this kind of role
        2) Or maybe it was some kind of test to see if he would fight harder the following year by kissing their behinds ……….for eg. Anne Hathaway and Natalie Portman just pop into my head when it comes to desperation to win.
        But I’m more inclined or willing to believe your statements because everything you stated so far is really interesting.
        Oh yeah I Amy Irving and don’t get me started on Glover LOL …………..basically I guess you don’t mess with Spielberg and any other established producers, directors businessmen ETC. who are a part of “the club” ……….or else.
    • InvaderTak says:
      Does that mean that BC probably killed his chances this year (and perhaps in the future?) with this dumb@ss campaing? Shouldn’t HW know how to play this game by now?
      • Dana says:
        HW likes moneymakers and people who have consistent box office appeal which translates into more ca$h. Period. They could care less about internet fandoms. All they care about is the bottom line. If BC proves to be a consistent moneymaker for the studios, all is forgiven. He may very well lose *this* Oscar campaign BUT if he’s good, he behaves well, schmoozes the right people, gets parts in films which make lots of money (aka Marvel’s Dr. Doom), he’ll eventually get parts in other serious films, work with higher-calibre directors and he’ll get more nominations in the future and most likely win.
        15 years ago, something similar happened to Russell Crowe. He got nominated for “The Insider”, didn’t win but won the next year for “Gladiator”. He was the Golden Boy. And then it really all went to his head and he started acting up. Throwing phones, attacks on producers, fights in bars, heavy drinking. He got nominated again for “A Beautiful Mind” but didn’t win. In fact many of his other films were getting nominated except him. The Hollywood community got sick of his overblown ego and antics and his standing started to go down very quickly after that. So, there’s a cautionary tale there…
    • Lilacflowers says:
      @Dana, I agree that Duvall is more of a factor in this race than people realize. I think Simmons or Norton definitely deserve the win here but AMPAS tends to treat this category as a lifetime achievement award (Plummer, Arkin, Morgan Freeman, Jim Broadbent, Michael Caine, James Coburn, Martin Landau, Tommy Lee Jones, Gene Hackman, Jack Palance) and, at age 84, they may be wanted to send Duvall off with another statue, just for sticking around.
  110. zut alors! says:
    I think it’s time for Jennifer Aniston to bust out the Marchesa and start cozying up to Harvey Weinstein. I don’t think there will be a Horrible Bosses 3. Oh well, I’m sure she’s looking forward to We’re The Millers 2!
  111. Godwina says:
    “I know this makes me a horrible person, but I’m giddy with relief that Aniston didn’t get nominated. That makes me so, so happy.”
    Makes two of us. Let them judge!
  112. BlueeJay says:
    Not sure if it was mentioned – too many posts to go through. But Scott Rudkin is the producer of Grand Budapest Hotel. Appear the Academy loves him. Go figure.
  113. Ancora says:
    Okay, this is a bit off topic, but it’s been bothering me: Can someone tell me why Sienna F’ing Miller is in everything? She’s not a bad actress, but she’s also not amazing… She’s in Foxcatcher, American Sniper, Black Mass, Highrise & Lost City of Z. I mean, who is she banging? Oh, wait…. That was “just a phase.” But, um, yeah. Anybody know why she seems to be getting so much work right now?
    • Ganger says:
      Sienna Miller mystifies me, too. I think it has a lot to do with being blonde, petite, and pretty.
