Jennifer Lawrence wore Prada at the PGAs: stunning or too Vegas-y?

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence attended the PGAs Saturday night as a presenter. I’ve missed her so much since she’s skipped most of this awards season. Something interesting happened — Birdman took the top producing prize. The winner of that award has scored best picture at the Oscars for the past seven years. I won’t be disappointed if the streak continues. Birdman was pretty awesome and deserves all of its nominations.

Jennifer switched up her routine and wore a Prada dress. I like it? Even with the weird, embellished belly patch, this is a gorgeous, Grecian-inspired gown. The back view is better than the front. The general consensus is that JLaw deserves recognition whenever she steps away from Dior, but her red carpet taste isn’t fantastic. She picked a good one here. Her shoes are also Prada, and she wore Irene Neuwirth earrings with and a Shay ring.

Jennifer presented Jon Feltheimer with the PGA milestone recipient award. Her speech was a nice mixture of self-deprecating humor and semi-professionalism. Here’s part of the transcript:

“Hello, past, present, and hopefully future employers. I wish I’d have thought to ask one of you for a Xanax, whoo! I normally say no to this kind of thing on the account of my crippling anxiety and the unbreakable bond between woman and couch. But I when I heard it was for Feltheimer, I had to say yes because I just assumed that I was contractually obligated. And then when I found out that I wasn’t, I had already picked out this dress. Jon has been in this business longer than I’ve been alive. I love saying that. Anything like that. And he’s exceeded expecations with anything he’s made throughout his career. He’s known for looking towards the future and adapting studio models to successfully change with the times. He’s not only held his CEO title with Lionsgate for almost 15 years, come this March, but leadership positions at Sony and New World Entertainment. And his assistant also has amazing taste when it comes to star gifts. I was so afraid of signing on to these movies a few years ago because something that size can make or break a career. I put my trust in Lionsgate and they put their trust in me and now I think we have a strong and amazing relationship that I hope lasts until my career dies at 35. … Jon was charged to insure that Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games incredible trilogy of books was respectfully brought to life in four films and it was a … large f***ing failure!”

[From YouTube]

Yay, that was a good speech! She was clearly kidding about the Hunger Games‘ failure. It’s nice to see a presenter show proper respect for an award recipient but also manage to interject some humor into a speech. JLaw’s often labelled as goofy, but she gave a nice deadpan delivery here. Nicely done.

maybe rosamund pike was hoping her dress at the golden globes would work like this one does? because this dress is beautiful and the basic pattern of this dress has a similar feel to pike’s.

    • L says:

THIS. It reminded me so much of Pike’s dress. And even thought the fit is off in the bust here-still so much better than Pike’s dress.

  2. alreadyready says:

The fitting is meh. Expecially the bust part It would look much better on a taller girl.

  3. Someonestolemyname says:

    Stunning!

  4. Charlotte says:

I like her hair. Wish I could get mine to cooperate like that.

  5. Kiddo says:

It would have worked better without the silver patching, especially the front square on the abdomen, which looks like that metal mesh that you put down with bathroom tile.

  6. Lucy2 says:

I would like the dress a lot if it didn’t have the big squares of beading at the waistline.

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think it’s pretty, and she looks beautiful, but it doesn’t fit properly. I don’t get it when people wear these gowns costing an arm and a leg and don’t have them fitted to perfection.

    • qwerty says:

It’s not like she paid for it.

      • BaeOnBoard says:

Doesn’t matter. It’s a glamorous, high-end fashion piece that’s bringing as much exposure to the designer as to the actress, and should be made to look its absolute best.

  8. Gill B says:

She looks incredible – the dress goes for impact and hits it without being over the top. Lawrence has begun to make some really good calls on the dress front recently. I get the impression she (and her team) have finally worked out her look. And yes, I’m missing her as well during awards season: absence sure makes the heart grow fonder, I’d got tired of her carry-on by this time last year but this season has really lacked the energy and unpredictability she brings to the carpet.

    • Lydia says:

Her casual style that she picks herself is bizarre. All her official looks are picked by a team, for sure. She may give hints of what she prefers and is comfortable in but by and large these choices would be made for her.

      • Gill B says:

I agree that her casual style used to be bizarre – but everything I’ve seen her in over the last few months has been pretty impressive. That’s why I think she and her team have ramped up a gear. They’ve probably hired someone really good to dress her, and the results are coming in.

  9. Maria says:

There’s something about the fit that seems off to me.

It’s rather meh to me to be honest.

  10. minime says:

The speech was good and funny. I think she’s very professional in everything she does without going very far away from her personality. That annoys a lot of ppl but probably also make some others like her more.
I like the dress but I think it would fit her better in another color.

  11. hilda says:

am i the only one that doesn’t like the dress ?

    • qwerty says:

No, it’s awful and her breasts look saggy in it (I’ve seen many more pics on another site)

  12. lower-case deb says:

i don’t get the Teletubbies-inspired embellishment on the front, but the overall cut is interesting.

  13. bella says:

not feeling the mesh parts either.
i love the straps and the look from the back!
she is a bit goofy, but endearing and funny.
still don’t see her with chris martin.
he and alexa chung were perfectly paired IMO.

  14. scout says:

Too many slits everywhere but she is cute, I just like to look at her chubby baby face.

  15. Talie says:

I was shocked at how good that speech was! She clearly really prepared… she hit all the right notes, too. Wow.

  16. Kaley says:

    Bleh.

  17. Catk says:

    *ensure* not we are farmers.

Like the speech, like everything but the belly mesh.

  18. Janet says:

The silver patches throw the whole dress off.

  19. INeedANap says:

“…when my career dies at 35.”

Sad and likely true — not because I think she lacks talent, but because that’s Hollywood. Sigh.

  20. Newgirl says:

I like the back of the dress

  21. maeliz says:

It isn’t a good looking fit. The silver patches, especially in the front ruin it.

  22. Juana says:

Excellent speech, well-prepared and well-delivered to a room full of top producers wondering who to cast in their next film. She is very professional at this sort of thing. When people write J-Law off as being goofy and a bit vacant, it’s a sign that they haven’t been paying attention. She’s very good at playing up her persona while simultaneously delivering the goods, whether in interviews, chat-shows or this type of event.

  23. Cindy says:

Beautiful. This gown is gorgeous and jennifer looks perfect in it. I love the silver patches, the fit of the dress and how it flows, sort of billowy. My favorite of all of Jennifer’s gowns.

  24. Minu umrani says:

she made the presentation speech all about herself and being jlaw seriously ! this is getting old . she looks pretty .

    • **sighs** says:

I thought I was the only one. When she actually talked about the producer it was very blah and general. The speech was all about showcasing herself. Bleh.

      • James L says:

That video isn’t the full speech. There’s an obvious cut in the middle, presumably to leave out all the detailed stuff she said about the Lionsgate CEO’s CV that isn’t of general interest. So it isn’t very fair to accuse her of making the speech all about herself.

    • Lolle says:

Hollywood reporter wrote that everyone said “She’s so great”. The Academy loves her and she is surely charismatic

  25. Lucy says:

Lovely!! I miss her a lot too, but I’m sure it’s a relief for her.

  26. kri says:

This is weird…it’s like JLaw wore JLo or something. I think it just needed to be a bit more fitted, but I like it.

  27. GlimmerBunny says:

SO BEAUTIFUL. I really wish she’d worn this to the oscars, it’s probably my second favorite dress she’s ever worn (after the first red Oscar dress). Her speech was funny too.

    • Jayna says:

It’s a wow for me. I don’t get all the meh or hate for it. I love it on her. It just works on her when it might be a big fail on someone else. Her makeup and hair color and hair style are great. Her eyes are so striking and great skin.

  28. poppy says:

another dress cut too long for the torso. it is a great dress but not fit to her properly. the back is great.

  29. nicolenm says:

Wow she looks great. She should take a break from Dior more often.
