Suge Knight arrested for hit & run fatality, police are treating it as homicide

E-40's "The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil 4, 5 & 6" Triple Album Release Party at Tru Hollywood Nightclub on December 10, 2013
Death Row records founder Suge Knight was involved in a fatal hit and run yesterday. In the afternoon he got in an altercation on the set of Straight Outta Compton, a biopic of the group N.W.A. About twenty minutes after the fight, Knight drove to the parking lot of a fast food restaurant where he two men with his car, backing up over one man and running him over again as he fled the scene. At least one of the men was reportedly known to Knight, although Knight’s lawyer claims that his client was being attacked by other men and that he accidentally hit these other people with his car. Eyewitnesses claim the incident looked deliberate. The victims were rushed to hospital, with one victim, identified by TMZ as Terry Carter (not the actor, another guy), later dying from his injuries. TMZ reports that Carter arrived with Knight in his truck and was walking up to the passenger side door when he was hit. Knight later abandoned the vehicle and was wanted by police for questioning. Early this morning, Knight turned himself in to L.A. police.

I’ll quote The Week here to sum up the sad situation:

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says former rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight ran over two men in a parking lot on Thursday afternoon, killing one of them, after a confrontation on the set of the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton. They are investigating the hit-and-run as a homicide, and Knight’s lawyer, James Blatt, tells NBC News that his client is making arrangements to surrender after what he calls a “tragic accident.”

L.A. Sheriff’s Capt. John Corina told reporters Thursday night that after fighting with two crew members on the set, Knight followed them to Tam’s Burgers 20 minutes later, backed over them in the parking lot, then ran over them again before driving away. Knight co-founded Death Row Records with Dr. Dre in 1991, and has a history of battery and hitting people with cars, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Blatt told The Associated Press that Knight ran over his friends accidentally while fleeing attackers. “He was in the process of being physically assaulted by two men, and in an effort to escape he unfortunately hit two (other) individuals,” Blatt said. “We are confident that once the investigation is completed, he will be totally exonerated.”

[From The Week]

So police claim that Knight hit the two men he was arguing with while Knight’s lawyer claims that Knight accidentally hit two men when trying to escape two other people. Hopefully eyewitnesses and video surveillance will be able to clear up what happened.

Reports claim that Knight faces up to 30 years in prison due to his criminal history. He has a long and storied past involving assault, shootings, multiple parole violations and what some claim is a suspicious connection to the murders of Tupac and Biggie Smalls. Knight has also been in prison twice for violating parole. Last August, he was shot six times at a party and survived. In November he pled not guilty to second degree robbery after he was charged with the theft of a female paparazzo’s camera. He was facing up to 30 years for that charge alone and was out on bail and awaiting sentencing. If he’s convicted of this latest charge, he’s likely to go away for a long time.

Suge has been arrested for murder and his bail has been set at $2 million. TMZ has the latest updates.

  1. Maria says:

This man truly is a menace to society, he needs to be locked up, for life.

    • doofus says:

straight up (violent) criminal. I remember hearing a story from Dr. Dre about how Knight showed up at his house and essentially held him at gunpoint to give up the masters for The Chronic.

he’s a gangster, and that’s how he runs in the business world, too.

    • Red says:

I really think he is a psychopath. In the clinical sense of the word. He has zero shame, remorse, empathy. Nothing. If he wants something, he just takes it. I mean even within gang culture he is considered an extreme outlier – just dead on the inside.

On a related note, how fitting that this should happened during the filming of the NWA biopic, given the violence he directed at NWA members too. I almost feel like they should ditch the NWA storyline and secretly just turn it into a Suge Knight biopic

  2. Beep says:

Suge Knight killed someone? I, for one, am shocked. Shocked.

    • Loopy says:

Imagine running into him in the middle of the night, the horror.

    • BangersandMash says:

Now hold on, whoa there!! He was running away from two other people.

THATS why he killed and injured the other two…

      • Beep says:

Of course. I mean he would never intentionally run two people over. He was obviously scared and was running away. Suge Knight. Running away.

      • Jacqueline says:

If this homocide is a parole violation, I cannot believe that any bail has been set, either.

  3. PunkyMomma says:

And he has been given a two million bail, which is peanuts to him. Why isn’t this thug being held without bail?
    .

  4. The Original Mia says:

How can he claim it was an accident when there are witnesses who say he hunted them down 20 minutes after the fight ended? Throw the key away!

  5. Kiddo says:

He is one cold walking tank. He killed his friend.

  6. Cecada says:

How did he ‘accidentally’ repeatedly back up and run over them multiple times???

If it was an accident… Why flee the scene, abandon the truck, then call his lawyer?

  7. Sam says:

I hate to ask this, but…

Are you shocked? Is anyone shocked?

This guy has an extremely long history of violence, going back to when he was with Tupac. Then there are the rumors he set Tupac up. And he’s been in and out of prison since. Is it in any way shocking that he finally killed somebody?

I’m just a little dismayed that he can “make arrangements” to turn himself in. Seems like an awful lot of deference to a person suspected of homicide. If it were any other generic black man in LA, I can’t see the cops being so respectful.

    • NewWester says:

Money talks and frankly after reading stories about how shady this guy is I would not be surprised if has “talked” to certain people. He is one scary man

    • FingerBinger says:

@Sam It’s not about the cops being respectful. It’s more about the cops knowing about Suge’s history of violence and connection with gangs. It’s about getting a dangerous man to turn himself in without incident.

      • Sam says:

I find that hard to believe, given that part of the whole thing of policing is being able to bring in violent criminals and fugitives. What else is SWAT for, if nothing else? I can’t seem to recall any other violent criminals getting such respectful treatment.

      • Bridget says:

Sam: he’s probably been in contact with his lawyer, and his lawyer let the police know that he’ll turn himself in without incident. Because why would the police want to risk a violent confrontation with a crazy man who could very well put their lives or the lives of innocent people in danger, when there’s an option that would avoid that? I would imagine that their first concern is no one else getting hurt or killed.

    • Bridget says:

And the guy he killed was actually his friend who drove him there. Am I the only one who heard that and thought “well what do you expect if you have the bad judgement to be Suge Knight’s friend?”

    • Petee says:

I am sure this is not the first person he has killed. He just got caught.

    • Tiffany :) says:

“Is it in any way shocking that he finally killed somebody?”

Hmmm…I get the feeling this is just the first time he was caught.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

You really think this is his first kill…?

        This man is extremely dangerous.

Did anyone ever read about how badly he allegedly beat a woman in a car in a parking lot, within an inch of her young life?

      • Tiffany :) says:

Yeah, that was the point of my comment. I doubt this is his first.

    • LAK says:

Sam: some people are violent psychopaths with violent gang connections. Connections that are more afraid of them than their other psycho violent gang mates. Then there is Suge Knight. This man has terrorised since he the 80s. It’s not about treating him with kid gloves, it’s about minimising the collateral damage of his arrest.

  8. Hope says:

Lock that low life piece of sh!t up! For the love of all that is holy, this affluenza BS NEEDS to stop.

  9. Loopy says:

This guy is like the Teflon Don, how many crimes has he been involved in the last twenty years and he is still around, shot 6 times and discharged himself the next day WTF ?

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      Rhymes with he’s an alleged….itch….

      Rumour….in street.

      • mimif says:

I love how you can’t say it. I’ll spell it out for you. SNITCH
*double crosses herself & says one hundred and seventy two thousand million Hail Bloody Marys*

  10. Eazypeazy says:

This is one bad cockroach of a man.

  11. Tiffany says:

The first thought that came to my mind when reading this story is, ‘ Why are people not trying hard enough to kill him.’ Then I kicked myself for thinking like that.

This man makes dictators look like chumps.

    • Loopy says:

You don’t have to kick your self the guy is an evil scum. I wonder what type of woman he is married to, I can’t imagine, he could snap on you at the blink of an eye.

      • Tiffany says:

Yeah Loopy, are we really any better by wishing death onto someone.

QQ. I know what you mean. The man is scary and knowing what we know about him, you will not succeed in any interaction with him.

    • QQ says:

Yeah No Tiffany I’m All The way in Florida but have the Good Sense of being Deadly afraid of Suge Knight like.. Don’t actually say his name for reals lest he appears… He looks and acts like he kills puppies and bench presses Redwoods for fun

      • Tiffany :) says:

It scares me to know I live in the same city. He doesn’t strike me as the type to care if bystanders get in the way…especially when he runs over his own “friends”.

    • ChocoChipDstryr says:

      Maybe he’s Rasputin reincarnated?

  12. BangersandMash says:

    Damn, Suge??!!! smh

  13. AlmondJoy says:

The only that shocks me about this is the fact that this site is reporting on him. Had no idea he was on the radar lol

  14. Renee28 says:

If I had repeatedly cheated death and gotten away with crimes I would thank my lucky stars and go live a quiet life. But I guess that’s too logical for someone like him.

  15. Rachel says:

I’m never surprised when a new story pops up about him.

  16. M.A.F. says:

It still baffles my mind how he is still alive yet Biggie Smalls & Tupac aren’t .

  17. boredblond says:

The guy he killed was his ‘friend’ who drove him there, and this scumbag took off while others tried to help him…hopefully he’ll face actual justice, and not L.A. celebrity justice.

  18. scout says:

How many lives does this guy have? He got shot multiple times and he is still around to mow down people? Damn!!

  19. Eileen says:

Just remember when it comes to justice we are all equal-ju$t $ome are more equal than other$

  20. Mia4S says:

You know how the word “thug” is often unfairly targeted as a prejudicial slur against Black men? Yeah, not in this case. If this guy was white, purple, or aqua marine he’d still be an evil thug. I hope he gets life.

  21. Vampi says:

“Celebrity Justice” is a flipping joke. Suge, Lohan, Beiber, Brown…..
    Gahhhh! It makes me ill.
This charge needs to be one that sticks. This is pure insanity. Disgusted majorly here. SMDH

  22. Kim1 says:

I thought California had the three strikes law? Why wasn’t he already serving. 25 years in prison?

    • Tiffany says:

I think those are for convictions and not arrests. Things just have a way of working themselves out when it comes to this….thing.

  23. lem says:

I don’t see this guy getting the “hollywood justice system.” He’s not pulling the stunts of Lindsey Lohan and Chris Brown. That said, in this situation, I would not be surprised at all if: 1) the witnesses changed their stories/ended up dead, and/or 2) the video surveillance (if there is any) goes missing. This is not a guy who leaves loose ends.

    • manta says:

I can totally see another thing happening: the guy has been shot 6 times, start the countdown for his lawyer producing a medical record stating that his health is incompatible with incarceration, or at least requires a cushy/VIP quarter or an medical ward.

I’m sure we’ll see a piece of paper explaining to us how his lungs/kidneys/liver (pick whatever major organ you like) could be compromised if he’s put in a cell.

    • Jackson says:

I agree with you, lem. I would be absolutely stunned if things don’t turn out just as you’ve described.

  24. I Choose Me says:

He needs to be locked away for a long long time. This cold as ice mofo has been getting away with too much for too long.

    • Tiffany says:

If that happens, where would that put him. He would have to be solitary because the general population will be the ones that are not safe.

  25. Dani Lakes DDS says:

Ooh I have a Sure Knight story!

I graduated from college May 10, 2008. I went to LMU, a small, liberal arts University in LA. Our school was also 8% black, we all knew each other quite well. There was a group of guys from class of 2007 who threw parties, and they threw a graduation party for us at a club on graduation night. As the party is starting to wind down, and a few people are leaving, who wanders on? SUGE KNIGHT! LIke I said, our school was pretty tight-knight, and NOBODY knew him or why he was there. Let me just say, he’s even more massive in person. Very intimidating. He’s just wandering thru the club, arms all hulked-out, staring people down. Mind you, this is a club full of recent college grads, and some college students. Pretty young group, he looked like a grandpa. People start leaving at this point, he just turned the entire vibe of the party.

My friends and I are outside waiting for our ride (a friends dad chartered a limo bc he knew we’d be drinking). My bff left her camera, and she and I ran back inside to get it. We came back outside, and were separated from our group, and wound up in a crowd behind who? Suge Knight. He starts picking on this guy for NO REASON. The guy apparently had enough, and reaches up, and KNOCKS SUGE OUT. It was all over the news, Suge in his yellow button down, unconscious on the pavement So crazy. And couldn’t have happened to a better guy.

  26. Charlotte_ says:

Does these idiots never grow up? Hes rich and can live a good life, hes not 20 years old anymore. What the f is wrong with him? dont you get wiser with age? What an idiot! He needs to be in jail!

  27. kri says:

What a sick f*ck. For years, he has been getting away with horrible stuff, and it takes him killing his own friend to get his comeuppance? Please put him away and never let him out.

  28. smcollins says:

Wow. I’ll admit that I’ve heard of Suge Knight but, until now, was not familiar with his past and his reputation. Holy crap! Yeah, this guy is a total psycho and needs to be locked up. Like, for the rest of his life.

  29. Dr.Funkenstein says:

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

  30. anne_000 says:

I don’t know details about his prior criminal history, court trials, convictions, and sentencing, but… is this just another case of the rich and famous or even just the famous, getting easier treatment than us ‘regular folk?’ (Think Lohan and a long list of celebs getting easier treatment)

This guy has been in and out of the justice system, getting more and more dangerous. Has he ever served a long-term prison sentence?

I live in LA. I just don’t need the justice system here having to tiers with the top tier babying the ‘elite’ just because and then end up with injuries and death of us regular folk.

Lohan’s Santa Monica conviction was because she drove her car under a truck then trying to get her assistant to take the blame. She could have killed someone. Then you have all these celebs driving drunk time after time, but they get a few hours in jail? (Think Paris Hilton et al)

    • lem says:

I think it has much more to do with him being rich and being able to intimidate people because he is dangerous. I honestly don’t think that him being famous has anything to do with it. He’s really not the type of famous that even the LA justice system would let slide.

  31. Sasha says:

Good luck getting people to testify

    • lem says:

Exactly. People will refuse to testify because this guy is legitimately dangerous, even if he is behind bars.

  32. Hautie says:

I am curious why Surge was there to begin with… he was no part of N.W.A.

He might have helped Dre, get out of business with Jerry Heller and Eazy E… but I was under the impression that this was a story about how N.W.A formed and their early life. Their success. Way before any of the crazy sh*t Dre had to deal with, over trusting Surge.

Yet, here is Surge once again in a place he had no business at… and someone ends up dead. And he is just some “allege” innocent bystander. *cough*bullsh*t*cough*

I will look to the positive side of this story… that Dre and Ice are still breathing. And their sons too.

Because if Surge was there on set… he was there trying to screw someone out of some money.

  33. LAK says:

I feel sorry for the prison to which he will be sent. Yikes!!!!

  34. nope says:

He definitely killed 2Pac, may have had something to do with Notorious BIG’s murder. F*** him.
