Beyonce in Proenza Schouler at the Grammys: boring or beautiful?

wenn22162821

Beyonce Knowles’ Grammys red carpet dress was such a snooze. She wore this black Proenza Schouler which looked like a million other dresses, and it even looked like gowns Beyonce has worn before on other red carpets. I sort of give Beyonce some credit though: she’s won a bajillion Grammys (and she won three more last night, making her total Grammy haul 20), and it really felt like she was there as an already established icon, like she doesn’t have to try-hard and attention-grab and all of that (coughMadonna). When she won one of her Grammys last night, she did thank the most important people in the universe: “I’d like to say thank you to my Beyhive. Thank you guys for riding so hard.” They do ride hard.

Beyonce was saved for the next-to-last performance of the evening, singing “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.” It’s an old Civil Rights Movement song and Bey did it well. But I think she got schedule-blocked by producers who decided to put on f—king AC/DC on the opening. How much better would it have been if THIS had been the opening?

One last thing – Beyonce and Jay-Z’s faces as they thought Kanye West was going KANYE all over Beck’s win last night. It was everything.

Is it just me, or is Beyoncé looking whiter as time goes by?

    • Jaana says:

Its you. Its winter, light skinned black people get lighter in the winter.

      • Susie Q says:

So Beyonce is whiter, then it’s just not her.

      • wiffie says:

        @susieq hahaha +1 thank you

Don’t most people, regardless of color get lighter in the winter? (summer for the southern hemisphere, I guess) I mean human skin being human skin with melanin and all.

      • qwerty says:

What winter? She just came back from Thailand. They travel to tropical countries all the time, have you seen her instagram?

      • Someonestolemyname says:

        Exactly. Thank you Jaana.

The things people make up about Beyoncé are so silly.
Beyoncé has a similar complexion to her creole mother.
Some just love to pick at this woman.
Beyoncé does not need to apologise or explain her natural skin tone ,to anyone.

She’s a gorgeous, talented woman. Kudos to her on all the success she has had, even with all the hater aid thrown at her.

    • Anna says:

In certain pictures her skin appears lighter than it already is. When she was first walking the red carpet and they were releasing the pictures as quickly as possible she was a lot darker and closer to her natural colour

      • Gea says:

For some reason, i think she exosted her looks and the latest one is just a repeat of many. I didn’t care for her performance at all. Ledisi was the one who suppost to be on the on the stage performing that song, but things happen and Bey did her thing. I have watched Ledisi backstage interview and she was kind of in shock.

    • mytbean says:

I think she’s probably staying out of the sun or slathering the sunscreen on more and for events wearing the flash photo highlighting make-up that make everyone look lighter. But she’s always been on the fairer skinned side.

    • Leona says:

I get these comments about my complexion too, usually in very snide tones. I am light skinned and either I tan much faster than my white friends or its much more noticeable on my skin, because day spent running errands in the sun will send me a shade darker. Also, when I use regular exfoliating toners or facewashes, the type that target acne I get lighter. And I mean really lighter. Its horrible. All chemical exfoliating ingredients basically mess with my complexion, I need to use something with salicylic acid ( a VERY common acne targeting ingredient found in pretty much most acne face products) afew times a week or I break out but if I do I go lighter and then I have to put up with some relative muttering bs about how “light girls just want to be white” or some such.

And then ofcourse theres lighting. Lighting doesnt affect other complexions as much as it does mine. In flash camera photos, I basically look white, whereas my darker skin cousins just look a shade lighter, if even that.

      • Jag says:

I’m sorry that people are snide to you about your complexion. It’s none of their business.

I used a light diffusing powder and with a flash once looked like a glowing vampire. More glowey than Sparkles himself!

      • Stephanie says:

I’m definitely not meaning to be rude. She just looks so different!!! It probably is lighting and makeup, staying out of the sun.

      • Mrs. Darcy says:

I think it’s weird how much people dwell on this, esp. with photos from events as opposed to magazine photoshopping which is another ballgame. What ever color you are, flash photography lightens you dramatically. And the hd makeup too, no wonder some people wear so much fake tan to start with!

@Leona, that is so rude your relatives would talk to you like that! Have you tried maybe something not quite so harsh as salycylic? (I know all acid will strip, but maybe a tea tree or vitamin C spot treatment or something?) .

      • AntiSocialButterfly says:

Leona- if acne is bothersome/frequent/tends toward cystic, try saw palmetto. I had acne increase over last 15 years or so (closing in on 50), and saw palmetto has been nothing short of miraculous for me- cleared within 2 weeks, skin is mostly maintenance free short of retinol moisturizers. There’s plenty of info on line, yes, it is anecdotal as is mine, but I swear by it. It could obviate your need for topical treatments and make your skin happier. Just make sure the label states the extract is standardized so that you get consistent dosing- that’s very important.

    • Cali says:

So over the dumb skin color comments as people seem to NEVER get that black skin changes!

  2. Lahdidahbaby says:

I agree about the dress – boring and matronly, two things Bey is not. But her rendition of “Take My Hand Precious Lord” was so gorgeous and stirring – one of the highlights of the night for me.

    • BeBeA says:

I didn’t care for the dress either, and the performance was just ok! I think I just like the Ledisi version best!

    • Sugar says:

She was oversinging, just like Christina Aguilara does.

      • fee says:

Omg, Christina is the #1 over singer, lol. They said Beyonce performance was going to be the best ever etc…too hyped up IMO, maybe that is why I WS not impressed, loved the song but without the constant wow factor of expectations it would of have been OK but I expected something else. Dress did not flatter her .

    • Diana B says:

Bey has one set of pipes on her. You can say whatever about her but as a vocalist she is outstanding.

    • Eddy says:

It was awful and sounded worse when a real singer came on right after her John Legend .

Can’t stand that wobbly voice repeating the last symbol singing … And did she get her outfits from solagne wedding.

she marrying herself at the Grammy’s .

And can she out to rest this f–King long blond wigs..she looked like a sheep dog.

    • qwerty says:

She actually is pretty boring. She’s been wearing pretty much this dress for the past 2 years. And the hair… yawn. Remember when she used to have actual hairstyles, instead of just putting on the same weave for every single event?

  3. Someonestolemyname says:

Beyoncé has her mother’s colouring. Her mother is from a creole family.

I’ve always felt Beyoncé looks like a mixture of her family heritage melting pot ,anyway, like many Americans.
She looks more of a mixture to me than Halle Berry, who I didn’t really know was until she said it, adnauseum

Her dress is too heavy , not really liking it.

    • Cupcake says:

I agree! The dress looks heavy and the hair looks heavy. It’s not a good look. I hope she felt good in it though.

  4. Holly says:

The dress does look heavy and kind of makes her look stumpy.

    • mary simon says:

I agree – the dress makes her look heavy and misshapen. I don’t like this trend of having the entire chest exposed – I have yet to see a jacket or a dress that flatters the woman wearing the total exposure look. It just looks wrong – doesn’t give the figure a long sleek line – kind of jarring with the ‘my boobs are in your face’ thing. A cheap fashion statement of the Kim Kardashian variety.

    • maeliz says:

I thought she looked heavy, then I noticed she was standing strange. She has her butt sticking out and her hand on her big thigh. Posing twisted

  5. NewWester says:

Is it the dress or is Beyonce standing at an odd angle?

  6. QQ says:

Super Boring.. The Wig’s shade was also Off

the Producers KNEW that If they put on Beysus first No one would stay on… So they put all those acts and stupid duos NO ONE asked for First..and Joke’s on them cause at 9 everyone moved on to The Walking Dead.. Dead ass I vaguely followed on Twitter cause I wasnt gonna Miss that (a Mistake) or Better Call Sail (magnificent!)

    • Ickythump says:

Umm no actually believe it or not but some people, myself included, had no interest in beyonce’s performance. I’m glad that they opened with AC/DC. Also loved Hozier and Annie Lennox.

      • tifzlan says:

AC/DC was fabulous. 70 years old and still as electric as ever, no crazy props or costumes needed. Annie Lennox was amazing. LOVED that performance!

      • Pandy says:

Yes, I’m someone else who would turn off Beyoncé from my TV. Annie Lennox stole the show last night.

      • CK says:

But QQ is right and they were promoing her performance for weeks, and everytime the show cut to commercial. Whether you like her or not, Beyonce is a huge draw for the demographic that they are going for. It was even her idea to perform. She approached Common/John Legend about introducing them with that song, and the producers put it in. That is some serious pull.

  7. lisa2 says:

Still don’t like that she stole the performance from Ledisi.. that should have been her moment. She was in the movie Selma singing the song. Why in the world did Beyonce request to sing that particular song that she was not nominated for and the other person who was could have been present to sing it. I get star power, but not like this.. just wrong. WRONG.

    • Anna says:

She didn’t request to sing it. They asked her too.. Common talked about it days before the Grammys

      • lisa2 says:

Not sure where you heard that.. but she did request it.. Common made the comment “you can’t say no to Beyonce”

now if that means something different then you can call it whatever you want.

    • Nickt says:

She didn’t steal anything. Ledisi never had a slot to perform in the first place. I’m a HUGE Ledisi fan, however, i wish people would stop spreading misinformation with the intention of dragging down Bey.

      • lisa2 says:

        I don’t dislike Beyonce ..

but she should have declined to let the other woman perform her song. She could have done Drunk in Love which she was nominated for. If you can’t see how that was not right; even is you were asked.. well so be it.

      • Cynthia says:

I love Ledisi’s music as well and I agree that dragging Bey doesn’t make sense. Still couldn’t Bey perform another song to introduce “Glory”.

    • Leona says:

Lol. Thats not how it works. She was invited to sing it. I didnt hear anybody making this claim when Jennifer Hudson was on Macklemores Same Love with the original singer and killed it spectacularly. Besides I bet if Beyonce had refused to guest on the song, the accusation would now be, “she didnt want to share a stage or she didnt want to open for another artist or she was insulted to not be asked to be an opening act or she only wants to perform her own songs”. The lengths some people go to…..

      • pleaseicu says:

She was not invited to sing. Not sure where that misinformation came from.

John Legend spoke about it last night to E!. He said Beyonce approached him and Common and asked to sing and they felt since she was Beyonce they couldn’t say no to her.

    • CK says:

You can’t steal something from someone that never owned it. There is no scenario in which Ledisi would have been performing that song on the Grammys, there I said it. Not to mention that the song has been around for decades and Ledisi doesn’t own it. The fact that Beyonce got an entire song to introduce people, is a sign of her pull.

  8. Dani2 says:

It’s okay, it’s pretty boring though, especially considering that her look last year was so interesting/fresh.

    • Ava says:

When did Byonce get these huge bolt on’s , she was famously a A cup now she sporting these C cups that look hard as rocks .

  9. Hmmm says:

She always has a weird smile, almost like she is a very troubled person who has to put on a happy smile face. Weird woman. Also her singing gospel is the phoniest thing ever. The black dress is hideous.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

I don’t find her weird at all.
She seems quite stable and like a nice person. Imo
I think her taste is fashion is bad though. I can think of only three things she has worn that I’ve liked.

I wonder if Grammy producers asked her to sing the song? TV?

  10. aquarius64 says:

The dress looks matronly on her. And she look wider in the hips in it, IMO.

  11. Anna says:

I’m glad Beyonce won some awards last night and brought her total to 20, but when she’s only winning them (and being nominated) in the R&B category and going against mostly black artists it kind of doesn’t mean as much. It would be nicer if they would nominate and award her for categories where she went against white artists too.. But this has happened for years with other artists as well so I’m not really surprised

    • Bridget says:

Her Grammy haul is also inflated by special collaborations that made her eligible for additional awards, like the “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration” for Crazy In Love and her collaborations with Vandross and Stevie. She’s got a lot of Grammys and has had some years where she’s won a bunch, but she didn’t have a year that put her on par with someone like Lauryn Hill until Sasha Fierce.

  12. embertine says:

I actually think she looks kind of lovely here with the mermaid hair, and I am Team Bey™, but I must admit the robot hands thing she does when she’s posing on the red carpet cracks me up. I would be exactly the same. “Oh my god, so many cameras, suck in stomach, oh crap what do I do with my HANDS”

  13. Lucy2 says:

I kind of like the dress but it is rather heavy looking. I think her hair is too long there though.

  14. Talie says:

I love that Jay-Z is completely horrified by Kanye in that moment. LOL

  15. dagdag says:

Jay-Z’s expression of disbelief and his phony laughter to ease off is priceless.

  16. scout says:

Looks like vacation has some good to Beyonce, looks good but that black dress is boring.

  17. Maria says:

I had hope, it’s gone, sigh.

  18. Dawn says:

She looked fine, not great and certainly not awful, just fine. I bet she and Gwennie had a great laugh about RantYe West and his need to get closer to Bey and Jay. Oh how I would love to be a fly on the wall and listen as Bey and Gwennie cut both Kardashian and West to shreds as they have their morning coffee.

  19. tabasco says:

Beyonce looked like she was going to be faux-upset with Kanye whilst actually loving it- – Jay Z looked like he was going to kick Kanye’s arse.

  20. SoCal says:

Is it me or does she wear the same type of dress over and over? I’m tired of her wearing the lace and sheer look. I think this dress would’ve been better in a different color, turquoise or hot pink, perhaps?

  21. Ankhel says:

Clicked on this post, thinking : Is she going to wear something tight and chest-revealing with a big skirt this time? Or is it something with see-through lace so that we can be totally surprised by her butt? Again? Looked at picture, sighed.

  22. Amy says:

Glad Beyoncé was there to sing that song, imagine if poor Ledisi had been invited? Then that might have been an actual moment of support for African American talent instead of spotlight hogging predictability.

    • CK says:

Why stop at Ledisi? Why not one of the other legends that performed it before her? Tina turner, Gladys Knight, Aretha, etc. Thing is, there is no scenario in which Ledisi would have been invited and given the time and resources to do a performance of that song. The only reason it was even featured is because Beyonce wanted to sing it, which is her right. Ledisi doesn’t own the song.

  23. The Original G says:

This dress is from the Mike Huckabee 1962 Spring Collection.

  24. Naddie says:

Not her best dress, it does make her look heavy, but she looks beautiful anyway. I just love looking at her when she’s smiling and laughing on the video next to Jay Z, she has an amazing smile.

  25. Cinderella says:

She’s looking like her mom here.

  26. Nic says:

Dress was boring, hair was awful, not impressed by her preformance.

  27. taxi says:

    Granny dress.

  28. Frosty says:

Mahalia Jackson, now she could sing!

  29. Jebsma says:

I can take or leave beyonces outfit but ACDC are legends and can open, close or saunter in part way through any show and own it.

  30. Barbara says:

I admit to not being a bey fan, and it is because all her songs sound the same to me.

  31. Karen says:

Why does she always insist on posing with her arm bent like that and low on her hip? She looks like she’s imitating a mannequin pose and it looks totally fake. NO ONE stands like like! It is such an unnatural pose!
