Scarlett Johansson does a high-fashion mullet for W Mag: hot or tragic?

scar1

What are your thoughts on Scarlett Johansson’s high-fashion mullet? She comes dangerously close to pulling it off. This whole W Magazine shoot – by Mert & Marcus – is very 1980s punk rock, I guess. There are worse styling choices, and as I said, it kind of works on Scarlett. I get tired of magazine stylists just doing her up like Marilyn Monroe or just “indiscriminate blonde bombshell.” You can see ScarJo’s full editorial here, and here are some highlights from the interview:

On her daughter Rose: “When she came out of me, I was so surprised. I had a very strong picture in my mind of what my baby would look like. And, of course, she is completely different. Perfect, but not what I’d imagined. Now, of course, I can’t picture her any other way.”

When offered a private changing room during the shoot: “Everyone has seen my breasts! I can change my top right here.”

Her role as a seductive alien in Under the Skin: “She was a totally different species, so her nudity was kind of practical. I also had black hair. That was my idea—I didn’t think I should be a blonde sort of bombshell. Naked, but not too sexy.”

She always had a husky voice: “When I was young, I would talk and everyone thought I had a cold. But when I went out for films, they loved my voice. It was a different world.”

She always wanted to do voice work for a cartoon: “I actually visited Pixar, hoping that they would use me for a cartoon. They didn’t. I was ripe for the picking! What happened? Now they have to give me a cartoon! I just called them out.”

Playing Black Widow: “People were surprised that I wanted to play a comic book heroine. But I loved Iron Man, and I met with Marvel to see what was possible. I had done my research, and the Black Widow character resonated with me. She is dark and has faced death so many times that she has a deep perspective on the value of life. In the sequel, you learn more about the sadness in her past. I think of her that way. Black Widow is a superhero, but she’s also human. She’s small, but she’s strong. It’s hard not to admire her. She packs a big punch. We all try to fight the forces of evil. Like Black Widow, you have to keep trying. The challenge is always there.”

[From W Magazine]

It’s funny that she associates darker hair with taking down the sexiness. For some men, I guess that’s the case. But lots of dudes dig brunettes, you know? As for her famous voice and how she’s never done a cartoon… that IS weird. She did all of that voice work on Her, which earned her a lot of praise, but it’s weird that no animated film producer has ever wanted her to voice a character. Oh, and as for her baby not looking like she expected… I’m assuming Rose is a brunette then? The horror!

In pap pics Rose appears to have dark hair and dark eyes, (like her father) and none of Scarlett’s Nordic features

So I’m guessing that’s were her surprise, re-baby’s looks, is coming from.
It’s an odd thing to admit to though. (Disappointment??)

    • SpookySpooks says:

Or maybe she thought she would come out looking like a perfect baby youbsee in movies, and not like a wrinkly little thing.

    • Santolina says:

Tactless, too, because someday her daughter will read that and may wonder the same thing.

    • Michelle says:

My family is all olive-skinned and dark haired and when my cousin gave birth to a blonde with green eyes, we often made the remark about how the genes from our side of the family were clearly recessive in comparison to her husband’s, but I definitely think it comes off as a little strange that Scarlett would say anything about that in an interview.

    • Observer says:

Scarlett looks very ashkenazi jewish with darker hair. Even with a lighter brown hair.
I think it’s her (bleached) blond hair that throws people off.

  2. Sarah B says:

I *still* think she has a cold. She always looks like she has a bad sinus infection and has to breathe through her mouth.

    • Ethelreda says:

I was going to say the same. In the pic where she’s wearing the red top, she looks like she’s about to sneeze any second now!

Seems that they’re going for a Debbie Harry circa 1977 look, and not pulling it off. I’ve said it before, but I’ve never really understood why Scarlett is considered such a beauty. She looks fairly average in non-photoshopped pics, and her much hyped body is nothing special either.

      • Jegede says:

@Ethelreda – Agreed and if some other actresses/starlets spew the crap she often does there would be hell!!

      • **sighs** says:

I don’t get it either. And she looks terrible here.

      • Ethelreda says:

I suppose it was a ‘right time right place’ thing, like so many stars. She had the best career start imaginable – ”Girl with the Pearl Earring” and ”Lost in Translation” coming out within a year of one another. And there was a vacancy for the latest ‘non threatening blonde’ and voila ….. a star is born!

I wouldn’t mind if she was a great actress, but for someone whose main selling point is her looks, I really don’t see her as anything special at all. That said, I think her look is designed to appeal much more to men, who seem to love her, even if so many women just don’t see the point.

      • lucy2 says:

These are not great photos of her. At times I think she is very beautiful, but I think it might translate better on film than in still photos.

      • Ethelreda says:

I agree that at times she can look beautiful. However, I would say that many women, if they could wear a Dolce and Gabbana gown and avail of the services of the world’s best make-up artists, hair stylists and photographers, would look just as beautiful.

I’ve rarely seen a non-photoshopped photo of her where I’ve thought she looks gorgeous. Most of the time, I’m bewildered as to how she got to be such a sex symbol.

      • Kosmos says:

You are right–her much-hyped body is just average, but photos can disguise or make one’s body look fantastic when it is not. I’m clearly not a Scarlett fan, and I also feel she is much overrated.

  3. Dawn says:

I love black and white photos. There is just something very cool about it. I kind of like her and I think she phonographs beautifully. I know a lot of people like to get down on her but I just can’t. Is it wrong that I love that she named her daughter Rose?

    • Someonestolemyname says:

I think she’s absolutely Stunning. Gorgeous woman.
      She’s Beautiful.

So many of the blonde actresses seem to catch hater aide from some, unless it’s JLAW. Lol

ScarJo seems cool. I like her, so does the movie going public evidently, she had a huge movie last year.

      • smcollins says:

I completely agree. I think she’s absolutely gorgeous, from head to toe. I guess I get why some people think she skates by on her looks, but honestly, if she was just another pretty face with no discernible talent she would have faded away a long time ago. Is she the greatest actress? No, but she’s certainly not a bad, or even just average, one either.

      • SpookySpooks says:

I think she’s a horrible actress. She seems half asleep in all her movies.

      • Anne tommy says:

Agree, someonestolemyname, sexy as hell: and a good actress too IMO

    • sunsetsnow says:

Ditto for all of the beautiful comments. She is sexy and interesting. I love the career she has carved out for herself.

  4. scout says:

That’s beyond ‘run of the mill’ Mullet, that’s a Mullet waterfall.

She looks great (apart from hair), beautiful new mommy.

  5. Delta Juliet says:

Well, as a brunette, I AM OFFENDED!!!!!!!

(Not really, but it seems like the thing to do these days. I’m a sexy brunette and I rock it 😉 )

    • Sof says:

Lol, I guess she’s never heard of Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox, Adriana Lima, etc?

    • Santolina says:

She’s made it clear in her typical mindless way, that she assumes everyone agrees blondes are sexier than brunettes. Such a dumb twit. Adding to the list Sophia Loren, Liz Taylor, Audrey Hepburn…

      • Nessa says:

        She really is painfully dumb.

And I cannot look at her without thinking, “mouth breather!”. She always has her damn mouth open. That must be sexier, like the blonde thing.

      • Santolina says:

Truly, Nessa. Her ditsy-looking expressions and poses perfectly express the utter idiocy within. To continue the list… Salma Hayek, Ava Gardner, Dita Von Teese, Eva Longoria, Sofia Vergara…

    • Adriana says:

Alessandra Ambrosio, Mila Kunis, Catherine zeta Jones, Nina Dobrev

  6. Abbicci says:

It looks like she’s channeling Debbie Harry and a blonde Joan Jett. I like this look on her.

  7. funcakes says:

Blondie wore her hair the same way in her day. The look still works.

  8. Lucy says:

She HAS voiced an animated character!! She was Princess Mindy in the first Sponge Bob movie.

  9. taxi says:

I don’t get blonde vs. brunette here, just that we imagine how our babies will look. They usually arrive with different features & faces than we imagined-plumper cheeks, less defined noses & chins, etc.

  10. Emily says:

Not sure how this is a mullet? It just looks like fringe bangs. Also, Under the Skin was one of the best movies I saw in 2014. She was great in it. Unsettling but not straight out scary.

    • Jackson says:

That’s all I came here to say, re Under the Skin. It was an intriguing and unsettling movie and well worth watching. Very thought-provoking.

  11. I Choose Me says:

I kinda dig the hair but I gotta smh at yet another open mouth cover pose.

  12. jlee says:

The hair is very Cherie Cherry Bomb. It looks cool on her, grimy sexy.

  13. JenniferJustice says:

Why do they think those fried bangs are sexy? I don’t care for that look at all. And like many others here, I’ve never understood the draw. She is not beautiful nor is she a great actress. She was Woody Allen’s muse in the 90’s. If it weren’t for his perving on her, she wouldn’t have the fame. She has yet to play a role where she is just ugly. The closest I’ve seen is her role as “The Bolyn Sisters” but only becasue she had just enough makeup to appear naturally attractive. Aside from that, it’s always sexy roles and she’s always just her same self. I don’t see her “become” a character. I think it’s funny they call out her “Nordic” features – are they talking about her shaved down nose (at least two nose jobs) or her blonde hair, which is bleached? She has no natural Nordic features to speak of – aside from being petite.

I’m guessing she thought her baby would come out looking like a mini-me but she looked more like her father.

    • Ethelreda says:

Scandinavians are among the tallest people in Europe, so being ‘petite’ is certainly not a ‘Nordic feature’. I agree that she really doesn’t look Scandinavian at all, especially when you bear in mind that her hair is bleached – mind you the same is true for many ‘Nordic blondes’!

  14. wonderwoman21 says:

I’m a total ScarJo hater. She always seems so full of herself in interviews and has little to no acting skills. As far as her looks go I don’t find her to be gorgeous; her nose is bulbous despite her obvious plastic surgery on it and there’s something ‘off’ about her jaw area. Her pictures rely on heavy photo shopping and Marilyn Monroe-inspired styling. She’s all hype but can’t deliver.

    • Michelle says:

Yup, have to agree with you about ScarJo seeming full of herself. When I first read some interviews with her a few years ago she came off as intelligent and I was happy to see a popular starlet with a brain, but it quickly started to seem like she is desperate to come off as some articulate genius and I find her very full of herself and annoying now.

    • apointlessexercise says:

Agreed. I will never forget Dylan or sodastream. Ugh. and she ruined Black Widow for me! (Esp in Cap 2, scarbage was just horrible in that.)

  15. Beth says:

I don’t think she is equating brunette hair as less sexy; I think it was her recognizing that a large part her own appeal is based on her blonde hair/blonde bombshell persona and the character needed to be far removed from that type of sexiness. I mean c’mon, lots of brunettes are just as sexy (if not more so than she is).

    • Joy says:

I agree: I don’t think she’s saying that dark hair is unsexy; she’s just removing herself from one type that didn’t fit her perceptions of her character. The use of bombshell clarifies her stance to mean one type of sexy.

  16. Jess says:

I understand what she’s saying about her daughter, I spent 9 months daydreaming about what my daughter would look like, I just knew she’d have blonde hair since her dad and I were blonde as kids, but as I was pushing the nurse told me she saw a head full of jet black hair and I couldn’t believe it. It wasn’t a disappointment in any way though, it was a wonderful surprise and such a beautiful experience to see what our genes produced. By far the best experience of my life, but not what I expected! 😉 Of course that dark hair fell out over her first year and she’s now a dark blonde, lol.

I don’t follow Scarlett much but I’ve always liked her voice, it’s very unique. Some of these pictures are awful though, especially the one with her mouth open and a visible tongue, don’t get why people think that’s an attractive look.

  17. The other paige says:

    Mouth breather.

  18. Maus Haus says:

    Courtney Love vibes

  19. Ice Queen says:

I really like her hair. (Don’t yell at me)..

  20. serena says:

    Love the photoshoot!

  21. crazydaisy says:

Dark hair is way sexier. It’s a fact. Smarter, too.

  22. Katie says:

I hate it. She has some seriously bad angles and I think this photo shoot got most of them. She can either be drop dead gorgeous or trashy.

  23. ella says:

Aren’t “high-fashion” and “mullet” mutually exclusive terms?

  24. PrunellaV says:

I lived through the Seventies. That is not a mullet. That is what happened after months of using a blow dryer and curling iron attempting to look like Farrah Fawcett. I was there. Get off my lawn!
