The Walking Dead: sometimes choosing life means letting go (spoilers)

Warning: spoilers for the latest episode of The Walking Dead, which aired Sunday, follow
Just when you thought that The Walking Dead had killed off their last major character for the time being, they came in with a doozy on their mid-season return. I’m grateful that I was able to watch this show during the day, because it was incredibly hard to take. I had nightmares about it last night.

I’m not going to do a full recap of episode 509, What Happened and What’s Going On, I’m assuming you’ve seen it already. There’s an excellent recap on i09 if you’re interested.

The episode was a departure from what we’re used to seeing. It was full of bizarre scenes and dream sequences and kept teasing a burial, which I assumed was Beth. The burial was in fact of fan favorite character Tyreese (Chad Coleman), who was bitten by a walker and succumbed. Much of the second half of the show was taken up by Tyreese’s fever dreams. Tyreese hallucinated that there were other departed characters in the room, like The Governor telling him he had a debt to pay, that douche Martin warning him that he was weak, and Beth, Mika, Lizzie and Bob telling him that it was ok to let go and go to the other side. Just remembering the episode has put a pit in my stomach again.

This was a powerful episode and while Tyreese’s death makes some sense in the scheme of the plot (he was too sensitive, he was conflicted) it still feels so manipulative. I wish they would have killed off Eugene, Abraham or the sneaky preacher, but of course no one would have cared about any of those people.

There’s been criticism that Walking Dead is killing off too many black characters. Remember that poor first guy, T-Dog? T-Dog was a cardboard cutout of a character, and WD has worked to diversify following criticism of how they handled T-Dog’s death. Other black characters who have died include of course Bob, and at least one secondary death, Oscar (killed after Tyreese was introduced). So now that Noah has been introduced it seems a little suspicious that Tyreese was just killed off.

Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd addressed the criticism that the show is quick to kill black characters. She said that they don’t discriminate when it comes to who lives and dies.

“Look, this is something in this world that we should be cognizant about, so my feeling is: Sure, let’s get it out there, let’s talk about it,” Hurd told me. “We’ve killed a lot more white characters than African-American characters. And not only that, I think it’s important to point out that we did cast two African-American actors in roles that were not African-American. In the comic books, Bob was white. And the character of Noah was not an African-American. We just cast the best actor.”

Hurd wouldn’t comment on any new actors coming on board, but pointed out that, “Noah is still alive and so is Seth Gilliam, playing Father Gabriel. And obviously both Sasha and Michonne. And let’s not forget the character of Glenn has been on the show since the very beginning.”

[From E! Online]

It’s worth nothing that Tyreese was also killed off in the comics, and earlier than he was here, so that surely factored into the decision to let him go. However, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) is a character that never even existed in the comics and he’s still around. I was starting to warm to Tyreese to the point where I considered him on par with Daryl. I was as upset by Tyreese’s death as I would be by Daryl’s death.

Cinema Blend has an interesting take on the Tyreese/Daryl dynamic. They claim that Daryl’s existence could have necessitated Tyreese’s death, because they have the same place in the hierarchy with Rick.

On Talking Dead, Coleman seemed touched by all the fans upset over Tyreese’s death. He said that Andrew Lincoln called him after taping wrapped to congratulate him on his acting and let him know that he’d miss him. Talking Dead also had on WD director Greg Nicotera, who explained this arty episode as similar to a Terrence Malick film. I just found it sad and pointless and I’m questioning whether I want to keep watching the show.

You can see a bonus clip from Talking Dead here. Chad Coleman sings at about 2:30 and it’s glorious. I hope he gets another reoccurring role on a major TV series soon. He’s an incredible actor.

RIP Tyreese. Such a good episode.

  2. Sayrah says:

Very sad but it was a beautiful episode.

  3. Lindy79 says:

As much as I loved Tyreese in the beginning and I cheered when he rugby tackled that guy Martin who threatened Judith after fighting off a group of walkers, when I found out he hadn’t actually killed him…after holding a knife to a baby then I’m sorry but it was time to go Tyreese.

    • Rachel says:

I knew Tyrese would die sooner rather than later. I just didn’t think it would happen immediately after Beth.

He was just too *good* to survive in the new world. The characters who desperately cling to their belief in the triumph of humanity always bite it on the show. Dale, Hershel, Bob, Tyrese. I don’t know if writers and producers are trying to make a statement about the devolution of humanity, but they certainly do so by the characters they kill off. And in the savagery of the characters who survive.

    • Pandy says:

Yeah, I kind of agree for that reason. But this episode gave me nightmares last night as well. And that ending, with the sound of the earth and the shovel. I didn’t see anyone finish off Tyrese – was this his perspective on being buried alive/undead?? Creepy, interesting episode.

    • Jen says:

YES!!! I could not believe that he didn’t kill him and he lied about it – bc you know Carol would have shredded him! I’m still ticked that Beth died, they had finally really developed her character then BOOM. πŸ˜”

  4. SypherMomma says:

Loved him on The Wire and just started warming to his WD character. Keep an eye out for him on Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, he’s one of Frank and Charlies bridge friends 😊 Great Actor

    • Celebitchy says:

Oh I like Always Sunny but I keep feeling like I have to watch it from the beginning. I will see if I can catch some of the episodes he’s on, thanks!

      • Evelyn says:

Watch the episode “The Gang Tries Desperately To Win An Award” there’s a moment in there where just his face makes me laugh so hard I cry!

    • FLORC says:

Always Sunny has let me down. That show was so clever, but sometime after the 1st 2 seasons it drifted off. I think they peaked and tried to recreate some greatest hits. Like Community did with the paintball episode.

  5. MAP says:

It was such a heart wrenching episode. For me, it was a choice between living that crappy existence they have and death, which the departed characters portrayed as not just “ok” but “better.” It seemed as if his pep talk to Noah was a goodbye, because he was talking about how he had wanted to die, but didn’t and then fulfilled his purpose — saving Judith. And to me, Judith has always represented hope in what seems to be a hopeless world. I cried like a baby when I saw Tyreese holding her after the prison.

And I second what a terrific actor Chad Coleman is. I thought he gave Tyreese nuance. Here is this big burly strong man, and at heart, Tyreese was sweet and thoughtful and sensitive. He will be missed from the show.

Also, I read somewhere that it was important for them to kill both Beth and Tyreese so closely in time because it has a huge ripple effect on the rest of the group. Let’s see how that plays out.

  6. FingerBinger says:

The show killing off the old characters and keeping these new characters doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

    • Laura-Melody says:

+1 I hope Tyrese is the last one for now. They have so many new-ish and basically useless characters that If they kill someone like Michonne, Carol or Glenn (who could use a more interesting storyline), instead of Rosita, Eugene, Gabriel, Abraham, Noah or Tara, I will probably stop watching.

    • Sue says:

I completely agree. I didn’t love Tyreese but I develop this loyalty to characters who have been there a long time. I still can’t believe they killed off Beth just when she was getting interesting. The show will start loosing momentum if they keep that up.

  7. Tiffany27 says:

    This episode was amazing.

  8. twink says:

I hated Tyreese with a passion and everyone I know did, was he a fan favorite? I was sick of his gentle giant schtick!

    • claire says:

I couldn’t stand him either and he certainly wasn’t on the path to becoming an equal to Daryl! Sheesh. That’s just not even remotely true.

He was too wishy-washy for me. I didn’t find his character particularly compelling at all.

    • FingerBinger says:

Maybe he was a fan favorite because of the comic books. I’ve never read the books ,but Tyrese was supposed to be a huge presence in them.

      • Mr. Stinky-FishFace says:

A lot of it was because of the comics. He WAS my favorite in them. I was estatic when they cast Chad as him and truthfully though they softened him a lot I loved the portrayal of him. He did die much earlier in the comics though, and i do think Daryl being on the show has a lot to do with why he died now. (He was Rick’s BFF) I think people forget (or really don’t know) that there is a comic that covers a lot of what is going on and they have said repeated they are going to get back to the storyline of the comics (the Easter Eggs in this episode! HOLY BATMAN!!!!!!!!!)

Either way, I just wanted it to be known that just like Comic Andrea, Comic Tyreese was a great character they tweaked. (Okay with Andrea they just made her totally 100000000000% different!)

    • Hannah says:

I really liked him and I was almost mad that they killed him off lol I seriously considered not watching anymore…If Michone, Glenn, Daryl or Maggie die, that’s it for me. Not even Rick haha but he seems immune anyway.

  9. Sally J. Freedman says:

I was actually surprised that his death affected me so much. I sad there and sobbed when it ended. I didn’t realized how much I had cared for his character. He was such a (I know a cliche) gentle giant. He never let the world around him change him. Ugh, just thinking of him with Judith strapped to his chest gets me choked up 😒

  10. Rachel says:

On a completely unrelated note… when did Andrew Lincoln morph into John Brown? As soon as I saw him Sunday night, I got some crazy John Brown heebie jeebies.

  11. Karen says:

The whole episode was bad. The “art” direction wasn’t great – more like an art student showing off his new skills and SYMBOLISM. The horror moments were good. But i tuned out all the monologs and whining by characters who don’t normally whine (michonne, e tu?) It just seemed like all the characters got new motivations all of a sudden. Tyrese cleared the front room, saw something was alive in the house and then stood with his back to the door to look at pictures???? Makes no sense! I liked early Tyrese better but he was coming out of his mopey shell finally. Ughhhh.

    • Nur says:

Thank you. I thought it was a bad episode too. Poor writing, show off artsy fartsy directing and terrible pace (once again). I didnt shed a single tear or was remotely moved, and I dont understand all the praise.

    • Hannah says:

I thought it was awful too, felt like a waste of an episode, it’s like they think killing off a character is going to shock us and keep us interested and watching…no. Only good part was that slow motion scene where they killed some walkers, that was cool.

  12. Maria says:

too try hard for my liking. we get it, the kids, beth, bob and martin are your travel buddies to death. come on, guys if you are 16 you’ll feel like a genius if you come up with that but i reckon the people writing and producing are hopefully older.

someone referred to Walking Dead as the best bad show on tv. i agree with that. i like watching it but its full of flaws.

i liked the way they showed Tyreese death though, from a wide angle. the twist that it wasnt beths funeral was also good.

  13. QQ says:

Meh! Black Guy Algorithm at it’s finest …There are currently 2 brothers too many and one has a broken leg and one is a useless whiner and they are like Highlanders… There can Only Be One!!…..Also Tyreese compared to the comic vs this perma-afraid-let us-not-kill-anything- useless babysitter HAD to go cause someone that can’t even mind a grown teenager with a broken leg/a toddler or a murdering child has basically no place in Zombie World

I’m sorta hate watching at this point cause is like they don’t know they can ADVANCE a story and a Location AND (not OR .. see Glenn Character last season and everyone Laughing at Maggie’s reaction at Beth’s death AKA …Uh You didn’t so much as MENTION the whole season you HAD a sister and we’re supposed to buy you’re devastated??) keep developing a character and Im tired of it, Kudos on the turned down Volume of Carl and the fact that they seem to be paying him for the line so that we aren’t completely annoyed by the mouthy kid so there is that

Also Nah They don’t have the STONES to kill major characters or wound Carl in the Eye (comic Cannon) like GoT does right and left .. there is just spoon feeding us the stuff… But the Zombie Kills are still The stuff of Legend!

    • FLORC says:

The formula is real, but it’s not quite as you put it. I posted a small portion of it below.
Tyreese wasn’t a glorified baby sitter. He needed some part of the old world. Some reason to survive. He wouldn’t kill just to put down a threat that wasn’t an immediate threat. He would to protect.

The characters will not be the same. This goes for most adaptations of lit to tv. Still not sure why everyone thinks they would/should be the same.

I do appreciate how they spotlight characters. How they grow to adapt in this world. All different types. Like how Beth was ready to let go the moment she realized the world she was in. Then grew into a strong person. When she told Dawn “I get it now” she was basically sacrificing herself. She knew it, but it had to be done.

The show is well written. I only hate watched the 2nd season and the prison regarding Lori. Outside of that it’s a tv show based on the graphic novels. This needs to be understood.

    • Mr. Stinky-FishFace says:

Meh they haven’t gotten to the Carl Cannon yet πŸ˜‰ It could still happen! Though Rick having two hands still bothers me….

    • Neonscream says:

GoT is a bit weak on the wounding too, Tyrion should have no nose, not just a wee scar across it.

  14. Kori says:

I hate that they give such little development to characters until right before they die. I love Rick, Daryl, et al but I’d like to see the background characters used more. Beth was showing possibilities and wham! Tyrese gets an episode to himself–wham. Bob. I hate it. I think they’ve gone into shock mode where the deaths are just used to yank the audience’s chain. I’m questioning watching it as well because why get invested in these people? I’m just guessing who is going to get it next.

  15. Zigggy says:

I thought the episode was super boring, and the hallucinations annoyed me. I was hoping for something more exciting for the first episode back since the hiatus, but I guess I’m getting used to being disappointed with this show.

  16. maria_spain says:

One black dude for another : Morgan is on his way in.

Seriously this Tyresse was horrible compare with the comic one, this one deserve to die .

    • FLORC says:

The characters can’t be the same and still have it be aired on TV. The graphic novels are … graphic!
You can’t watch the show and think the characters will be the same. It had to be toned down.

  17. Isabelle says:

Liked Tyrese & they’re offing people with ‘heart…and yes a lot of black characters. Come on writers you need at least a few sympathetic characters. Carol is truly the only one i care about now because she is complicated & thinks. Seems those are the people twd loves killing off.

  18. Ash says:

Scott Gimple taking over as showrunner has breathed new life into a show about the dead, He wrote the amazing episodes “Clear” (where Rick and Morgan re-unite) and the one where Rick and Shane get into an argument as a zombie shambles across a field. I LOVED this episode. I always thought that was what happens as you are dying: that your mind frantically tries to gain closure and peace in those last minutes and moments.

This episode showed that you can’t survive in this world if you are on either side of the extreme. Shane was a hothead. Tyreese’s problem was that he was still trying to live in the world that used to be, not the world that exists now. He still saw the walkers as people. His emotions clouded his need to act on instinct.

The group dynamic is changing and it will be interesting to see it explode. I am almost positive the destruction of the sanctuary was brought on by Negan and his crew. Glenn is a bad place, Daryl is probably going to shell back up, Michonne seems vulnerable, Maggie is probably having a nervous breakdown, etc.

In my opinion, this episode was Emmy worthy. The reason why people had such a strong reaction is because it touched on our most basic fear: dying. What happens in the last moments of your life. If you noticed, clocks were EVERYWHERE in this episode, a reminder his time was up. He did what he had to do.

    • FLORC says:

Negan hasn’t been introduced in the show yet.
Are you thinking about “The Hunters” and Terminus when speaking of sanctuary?
You’re talking about some things that haven’t and might not even happen in the show. It’s changing a lot from the comics without abandoning them totally.

The group dynamic is changing, but I don’t think it will go as you think. The director of this episode and the last 2 (including this seasons finally) stated things will only get worse for the group. This season will get dark. Darker than it has been in just 1 episode.

Also, the creators, writers, directors, and general staff shut down those theories people create. The clocks everywhere. Just clocks. Another episode had flames or fire when fire is just a light and cooking source. They think it’s cute, but not the meaning fans read into them.

On Talking Dead they explained where Tyreese was. He wanted to save his humanity. He would kill and live in that world. He could do what needed to be done. Saving Judith. He just didn’t want to love that quality and was giving up on living. This was going on for some time.
Highly recomment Story Sync and Talking Dead so people can better understad the episodes.

      • Ash says:

Yeah, I think they dropped the hint that Negan is coming. Especially when Glenn picked up the baseball bat. If you know the comics, you know whats about to go down…..

I was talking about the safe place Noah’s family was in. That “sanctuary.” The truth is, in this world, there is never one.

I think I implied that things are getting darker. Things are going to explode. It feels like you talking down to me. Chad Coleman even said the clocks were a reminder that time was running out. And I said he did what he had to do. He took care of Judith, made his peace and wanted out. I do watch Talking Dead and Story Sync, thanks. Just because someone has a different take, nobody’s view is superior to anyone else’s….

    • Laura-Melody says:

I didn’t read the graphic novels, but I’ve heard Negan is the cruelest and the most brutal character so it would seem fitting that his group might kill the entire community, including children like that. I’m curious but at the same time not sure if I want to know, why they cut those people in half and put their torsos in the trunk only to leave them there. The victims seemed to have the letter W carved into their foreheads and the walls were covered in signs about the wolves who were coming. Did Negan have anything to do with the group called “The Wolves”? Or were there another group like that in the comics?

      • Ash says:

Negan makes the Governor look pretty tame in comparison…

      • Mr. Stinky-FishFace says:

I think it might be the Whisperers…I mean they had Negan clues galore but I think that the Whisperers did the W’s so they could recognize each other… I don’t want to say too much though cause yeah Spoilers.

      • Goodnight says:

It can’t be the Whisperers, they don’t kill zombies. In fact, they want to avenge the zombies.

I’m pretty sure that it’s just an early hint of the Saviors/Negan. It’s a very Negan thing to do, chop them up for fun but leave them ‘alive’ to possibly bite the unwary. Pointless violence for the sake of entertainment is kind of his thing. Also, Glenn with the bat? I thought that an obvious nod to the comics, like the ‘slaughterhouse’ scene. Negan is definitely coming. I’d initially thought they’d leave it for next season but they might bring him for the season finale.

  19. FLORC says:

This black guy issue on TWD is without fail. They’re in the South and they only seem to find white people by majority.
There’s also a formula. 1 BM (black man) per group. If there are 2 BM per group 1 will leave within 3 episodes time.
Tyreese and Bob were able to stay because they were the only BM in in their group. When they merged 1 had to go.
Then Noah joined and everyone knew both he and Tyreese couldn’t stay.
This rule does not apply to the women.

They were really spotlighting Tyreese too. He was a dead man walking.
Just as Beth. She became a main player ad strong. she was spotlighted. So she was leavnig too.

  20. Ana Maria says:

I can’t say whether it was a good or bad episode, but I could not stop watching; it had some powerful images(to me); that shot of the train tracks, covered with leaves was haunting…I thought it represented the trip to the other side…and I dreamt about the episode too! although it was a pleasant dream…

  21. Val says:

I thought it was a good episode. Chad is a much better actor than what TWD showcased, they could have done a lot more with that character. They are moving into a new area of the comics and probably wrote themselves into a corner with Ty. He was just a shadow of a man at this point.

And just an FYI for CB, it’s Greg Nicotero, not Nicotera.

  22. Louise says:

Have never seen the show – its not big in the UK. BUT isn’t he Cutty from the Wire?!

  23. Dee Kay says:

I *loved* Tyrese but I am okay with his fate. I will miss seeing him, but I actually think Tyrese was pained and hurt by this apocalyptic world more than others — I think for him, more than others, death was a release from the torment of having to see all the ways that the beautiful earth, and humanity itself (and Tyrese had a lot of faith in people), had turned into hell. On the other side, there’s peace and love (that’s what his visions told him, I think), and so that’s where Tyrese went.

A quick check-in on where the other characters are, emotionally and psychologically:

-Glenn is getting harder (as he told Rick, he wouldn’t stop today to try to save a stranger, as he had done in the past).
-Michonne, a stone-cold warrior, is longing for some rest and stability, not for herself but for the group, to keep the humanity of the group intact.
-Daryl will do anything that Rick asks or requires, he will go where his pack goes.
-Maggie, as someone said above, is probably broken after losing Beth.
-Sasha is strong but will be grieving Tyrese for a while.
-Abraham, also strong, is weak right now b/c his mission of getting Abraham to DC to make the cure happen is dead.
-Rosita also seems pretty tough but her loyalty is to Abraham, she will go where he goes, do what he does.
-There are a lot of weaklings now (the priest and Eugene and Noah — I guess Noah’s leg could heal and he could be of more use).
-Carol has shown for a long time now that she is probably the most flexible person in the group. She can go it alone or with others. She can do all the hard things and there is a part of her that (I think) likes doing those things — being proactive in her life rather than the passive victim she was for so many years.
-Rick…it all depends on him. What he chooses to do next. I always feel like when Rick is In Charge, he is unhinged. Sometimes that means good things for the group (survival at any cost) but sometimes that means bad decisions. I think for now, Carol will feel compelled to stay and help Rick and Daryl do whatever they do.

I think the group is weak right now. Their strong ones are not at their best, and Rick and Michonne seem to be setting up for advocating opposite trajectories, but Rick will win. I’m excited but scared by what might be coming up. Surely, a new threat will present itself very, very soon. If Morgan really is shadowing them and if he does join up with them, he could be as strong as Rick and even take over the group, which I think would actually be really great for everyone. They could really use Morgan right now, just given how destroyed (emotionally) many of them are.

    • Sue says:

Love this summary. πŸ™‚ I really want Rick and Michonne to get together, but no one seems to have any interest in love right now on the show. I suppose it’s just too unstable. We still haven’t seen Maggie and Daryl and how they are after Beth’s death.

  24. db says:

Comicbook Tyreese dies too, but he was a much more compelling character. Well, he actually had a character lol. That’s my beef with the show. I get that nuances get lost translating to tv, blah blah. And it’s to the show’s credit that they created interesting new characters like Daryl and Merl. Bob’s sendoff of awesome. However, It’s grating though to bring over a popular character from the books and then pretty much do nothing with him on the show, and then give him this half-assed remembrance about the radio on his way out. It was just bad, imo. I find TWD frustrating and wildly uneven. There have been some great episodes and characters, and when the writers are able to translate that comicbook-ness to tv, the show just soars. It’s when it gets bogged down in tv-ishness that it goes badly wrong.

  25. Goodnight says:

I much preferred TV Tyreese to comic Tyreese, he was an amazing character. Even though I predicted from the start the grave was not Beth’s and the hierarchy of the show meant the only candidates for death had to be Sasha or Tyreese, I was still stunned when he was bitten and when the fever set in I was devastated.

Sasha and Tyreese both had storylines where they were at a crossroads and had to decide to fight or not fight. The newbies are too new to kill, it would have no impact. They couldn’t kill Glenn because everyone knows about his comic death and it would have a much lesser impact than it should. Maggie will clearly have a storyline in the wake of Beth’s death, so she wasn’t going to die. The older, but still expendable characters (Daryl and Carol) are too big in the fanbase to kill at a random moment and Rick, Judith, Carl and Michonne are not expendable at this point.

I have to admit it occurred to me that just as they bring one black actor in another leaves and their quota remains fulfilled, but I don’t think they meant it that way. At least, I hope not. I’d like to believe they just choose the best actors for the job, and thus far I think the cast is pretty exceptional.
